Pickles and Ice Cream Anyone?

imagesNo, I’ve never eaten that and I don’t want to.  However, I was putting pickles on my ham sandwich the other day and my son said “ew!” and it got me thinking about weird food combos.  Sometimes I look at them and think “gack” and other times I’ve gotta try them.

For instance, IV always puts ketchup on his hash browns and home fries at breakfast.  I find this disgusting.  Ketchup is for french fries and french fries only and NOT at breakfast.

In one of my favorite series–Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels–Stephanie eats all sorts of strange sandwiches.  I find myself intrigued by her tuna fish, potato chip and pickle combination.images-1

Oldest son used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches.  I had no desire to ever try that.

Youngest son does not eat anything in combo.  For years, if any foods on his plate touched, he wouldn’t eat them at all.

My  mom puts hot dogs in the macaroni and cheese.  I was never a fan.  Of course when I put spinach in it my kids weren’t wild about it either.

But I do like to dip swiss cheese in mustard.   I always loved raw beef and onions (though I stopped eating it when I read what a bad idea it was healthwise).  I sometimes use salsa as salad dressing.

images-2What are some of your favorite weird food combos?

The one everyone always teases me about is Ketchup in my chicken noodle soup.

  2. Freedom Writer on 20 Mar 2010 at 4:57 am #

DH puts ketchup on his scrambled eggs. Eww! I have a daughter who dips everything in ranch dressing. I like potato chips on my bologna sandwiches and cheese and tomato sandwiches.

  3. Margaret on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:52 am #

LOL Lori. I think your oldest son must be a relative of mine. I love mayo sandwiches. When I was in Kindergarten, my mother would pack a good lunch every day plus a mayonnaise sandwich. Every day, the good lunch came home again. Minus the mayo sandwich.

I also like peanut butter and mayo sandwiches.

I am with you on the ketchup/eggs. Eww

Vinegar on French fries? No thanks.

I don’t eat tuna anymore as I’ve lost my taste for it. But I do like putting Fritos and dill pickles in various sandwiches. Gives them a nice crunch.

What a fun topic for the first day of spring. Happy, happy spring my goddesses!

  4. Dianna on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:06 am #

My daughter didn’t like any salad dressings at all but she would eat barbecue sauce on her salads, that would turn a few heads in a restaurant.

My father would have me make him a peanut butter/onion/balogna sandwich. My mother would eat the mayonnaise sandwich, at the time I couldn’t handle mayonnaise, miracle whip, or anything else for that matter.

  5. Sabrina Jeffries on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:13 am #

I’m the queen of weird food combos. I inherited my dad’s love of peanut butter and ketchup toasted on bread. I love tuna, anchovies, and cream cheese as a spread (Hubby calls it cat food). I WOULD put potato chips on my sandwiches if it weren’t so fattening. Like Margaret, I love the crunch of chips on a sandwich.

I like salty-sweet combos, like salted nuts on ice cream or those chocolate-covered pretzels. The Thais mix salt and sugar to eat on green mangos, and I LOVE that. They also put banana slices on chicken curry, and I like that, too.

And Lori, I TOO like salsa as salad dressing. I also like guacamole. Since I hate mayonnaise (and ranch dressing often has mayo in it), whenever I order one of those Santa Fe type salads that come with ranch dressing and salsa and sometimes guacamole, I ask for no ranch and just use the latter for my dressing. Yum!

  6. Pesky on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:16 am #

Sadly I’m not really adventurous. The extent of oddness is, tuna salad mixed with warm broccoli (yum), cauliflauer with green goddess dressing on it, or olives instead of pickles on sandwiches.

I do love the lesser appreciated veggies though, brussel sprouts, rutabega, etc.

  7. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:22 am #

Wow, never heard that one before, Mrs. Brady!

Free–IV does that too! Makes me wince.

Hadn’t thought of Fritos in sandwiches, Margaret. I like dill pickles on a lot of them too.

  8. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:24 am #

I like those salads that have BBQ chicken on them, Dianna. I don’t use any salad dressing on those. But just BBQ on lettuce would be . . . interesting.

I’m with you on the salty-sweet, Sabrina. Love chocolate covered pretzels and peanuts on a hot fudge sunday. Mmmm. I think they call that a Tin Roof Sunday. Love ‘em.

Ah, Green Goddess. Pesky that’s a blast from the past. Haven’t had that in years.

  9. Deb on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:41 am #

I like a peanut butter sandwich with mayo and lettuce, but it has to have the lettuce, otherwise, yuck.

My husband and I like BLTs, but our daughter just likes the B in that sandwich.

This is a Midwestern one, I think—peanut butter sandwich with butter spread on top of the pb.

We also like the hot sandwich of bread, turkey or beef, mashed potatoes, and gravy poured over the top.

My mom likes cucumber sandwiches with mayo, salt, and a bit of sugar. It’s okay.

The weirdest I’ve heard of was my Gram’s fave—a piece of rye bread, a scoop of cottage cheese on top, and then she poured some cold coffee over the top. Ewwww.

NO ketchup on scrambled eggs, but my husband likes it on his fried eggs. Ewww, again.

  10. Debbie on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:01 am #

My dh and children like the ketchup on eggs, which I just can’t stand, so I’m chalking that up to genetics. We like the odd and unappreciated foods over here, like brussel sprouts, cabbage, saurkraut.
However, the family winner for odd has to be my little sister. When she was little she loved a specific sandwich (hang in here with me): Raisin Bread, salami, applesauce and sugar. Ew!
And of course, although she’s now in her 40s, I still tease her about it.

  11. dbrown3400 on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:02 am #

Happy Spring everyone! Hopefully we’re done with the heavy rains and floods and such, although we’re scheduled for more rain on Monday.

This is more of a quirk than unusual but growing up it was always mustard, pickles and onions on fried hamburgers and onions, tomatoes and mayonnaise on charcoal grilled burgers. Another more complicated combo was bologna, peanut butter, cheese, pickles and Fritos on squishy white Wonder bread.

  12. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:06 am #

My mom always puts butter on the peanut butter sandwiches, Deb. Ick. She also makes cucumber sandwiches as an appetizer, which I like, but my boys won’t touch.

I’d tease your sister about that too, Debbie. Salami and applesauce? Eeek.

As a welcome to spring, D, we have an inch of snow on the ground. I am not amused.

  13. Kathy on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:32 am #

I used to use butter with my PB&J but now I just put the PB on both peices of bread and smuckers seedless strawberry inside.
I can’t stand the sight let alone the smell of ketchup on eggs.
my brother used to eat toast with peanut butter and molasses. another smell that makes me gag. or maybe it was just him.lol
I like mayo- hellman’s only- as a french fry dip.
my question is what makes people even try these combinations?
I know I tried the mayo and fries thing when a friend came back from France and told me they eat it that way often over there.
It’s a little like the complicated orders I hear at Starbucks; how in teh world do you get to that point that you want a half-caf-no-whip-extrafoam soy whatchamacallit?

  14. Freshechelle on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:36 am #

Sorry to seem judgmental but y’all are making me queasy. I’m a plain and simple foodie. Never even had seafood. Yes, not even tuna (that’s the usual follow up question when I make that declaration).

  15. KellyProellocks on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:40 am #

I know that this will probably sound odd but I love roast chicken and banana sandwiches. The chicken needs to be cool though. I also love a good potato chip and gravy roll, but it’s hard to find someone that does a decent gravy though. I’m kinda fussy with gravy. I used to go crazy for a yoghurt and cucumber sauce on kebabs (chicken only). My father as a child used to eat salt and pepper sandwiches and my mother puts sugar I think it is on oranges! I love salty, sweet and sour foods but can’t come to the party on bitter. Ick! I love vinegar on hot chips and also love salt and vinegar chips (crisps).

  16. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:45 am #

Good questions, Kathy. I wonder how people make these combos up too. Perhaps they have only so much in their cupboards and put it together and think, “hey, that’s not bad”?

When I was still waitressing, we used to have french fry buffet. The cooks would make a batch of fries and we’d have little bowls of things to dip them in. Which is how I got hooked on tartar sauce or 1000 island for my fries. Ranch is good too. Mayo, vinegar. We tried it all.

Sorry, Fresh! I can’t eat much seafood myself because I’m allergic. But it always looks good to me.

It IS hard to find good gravy, Kelly. My MIL makes the best. So whenever we have a holiday at my house, as soon as she walks in the door I hand her the whisk and put her to work.

  17. Hollie on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:48 am #

Hi everyone…i’ve been a lurker here for a while and i just had to comment today…one of my favorite combos(before i went vegan) was bologna with sliced bananas! sounds gross but was oh so good! especially with spicy mustard! YUM!
and i also loved ketchup on eggs! no one else in the house does but i did!

  18. Pesky on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:55 am #

Oh wait! There is one thing I like that is kinda odd! Toasted Italian Bread or French Baguette with brie melted on it and really good balsamic vinager sprinkled on it. I’m not sure why but this is just right for salty, sweet, creamy craving.

  19. Rachel Gibson on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:56 am #

I do put catsup on hash browns, but I am very picky about food. I can’t have corn in anything but on the cob. It just looks to weird for me. I don’t like the food on my plate to touch.

  20. Terri Risner on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:02 am #

I dip fries in mayo or tarter sauce or ranch dressing. I put salsa on eggs and hashbrowns. My entire family dips roast beef or meatloaf in ranch dressing. When my youngest went through his hot dog stage, he would specify his dipping sauce as white or red (ranch or ketchup). He has now expanded to BBQ sauce. He puts both BBQ and mayo on most sandwiches. When I make garbage eggs (scrambled eggs with whatever I can find), I love black olives, onions, and pepperoni in them.

  21. SheridanLA on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:11 am #

Peanut butter on hamburgers and turkey sammiches. Got that from my dad and grandpa. It is not much different then a peanut sauce and goes well with meat. I also love ketchup and mayo on French fries (or rot/weiss, “red and white” as my German friend who introduced me to it says)

I am open to trying many different combinations. I tried a cheese and pickle sandwich when I was in Wales last year, the pickles were more pickled onions… really tasty and tangy. I also started liking the ketchup with eggs when my Brit friend made me English fry-up breakfasts.

The different flavors always intrigue me and mixing the dishes together makes even more interesting flavors :D

  22. Kathy on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:17 am #

when I was nanny for my girlies, they had a lot of soccer nights during the summer . I fed the girlies early then made the parents something to go that they could eat at the field. he likes onions but hated mushrooms, she likes mushrooms but hated onions. I’d usually make a pasta salad for them ,split it up so he got caesar dressing and she got ranch (garlic was not kind to her)toss their favs in and then label the containers.
Every so often, I’m told they miss that luxury that is me!
    lol

  23. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:19 am #

Hi, Hollie!! Welcome. We’re so glad you came out of lurk. Bologna and bananas huh?

Pesky–that sounds REALLY good to me. Mmmm.

You and my youngest must have been separated at birth, Rachel.

Salsa on eggs is the best, Terri. I love that.

  24. cail on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:20 am #

wow. some of these are gross!

i have had pickles and ice cream. a bunch of guys in the hs plays with me bought me one once. it was actually pretty good. the sweet and salty go well together.

i wouldn’t eat ketchup until about 3 years ago. DH made his famous meatloaf. It has ketchup on it. Now I’m hooked. I also remember when I first started eating sour cream. I absolutely adore sour cream. I will eat it on literally everything.

  25. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:23 am #

Sheridan–peanut butter seems to be a common denominator in a lot of things. I used to eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches but haven’t done that in a while.

I’d miss the luxury that was you, too, Kathy!!

Cail–you’re the first person I ever “met” who actually ate pickles and ice cream. I put ketchup on my meatloaf too. IV puts sour cream on it.

  26. Nicole Jordan on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:52 am #

    Too funny, Lori!

I like a few weird combos… at least dh thinks it’s weird. But I like salt and vinegar more than sugar. So pickles and saltines work for me. I think one of the Regency bucks used that combo as a diet… Beau Brummel? Or was it Byron?

I like peanut butter with bananas. I also like mustard and saurkraut, which dh hates. Although he’s learned to like honey mustard dressing, go figure.

BTW, we just found some great spritzer salad dressings… lo cal and tastes great. The honey mustard is made by Ben’s I think, the others are made by Kraft, I believe. If you’re trying to cut calories by eating salads, spritzers are a good way to do it.

  27. Karen on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:26 am #

Catsup on eggs, french fries, hot dogs. DH does mustard on his eggs, talk eeewwww.
Mayo on sandwiches. DH won’t eat mayo unless it’s in macaroni salad. Same with our daughters and g/daughter. Definitely hot dogs and macaroni/cheese, yummers.

  28. Deb on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:30 am #

    I forgot a couple:
Peanut butter sandwich with sliced banans and drizzled with honey.

Canadian bacon pizza with pineapple, sometimes green olives. :) Or go all the way with sauer kraut on it!

  29. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:30 am #

I’ve looked at those spritzers, Nicole. Some of them looked pretty good. Pickles and saltines doesn’t sound bad.

    Is anyone else getting hungry?

I have never heard of mustard on eggs, Karen. I do like a fried egg sandwich with mayo, cheese and pickles. Haven’t have one of those since college.

  30. Deb on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:30 am #

    I forgot a couple:

    oops, sorry, it printed twice.

  32. nancyg on 20 Mar 2010 at 11:35 am #

When I was younger, my mom made a tuna “casserole” – canned macaroni & cheese with tuna fish. Used to love it, but my kids are NOT tuna fans!

I too eat ketchup with my scrambled eggs & home fries at breakfast – got that one from my dad. DD #3 eats peanut butter & banana sandwiches. I make my kids leftover meatloaf sandwiches with ketchup for lunch. That grosses their friends out – MEATLOAF sandwiches?? lol

My kids won’t eat anything with raisins in it. Mr. G gave them that one – his reasoning is – if it didn’t make it as a grape or wine, he doesn’t want anything to do with it. No tomatoes or eggplant here either.

I love peanut butter pretzels. Actually, I love peanut butter with anything – especially with cream cheese on bagels. Been trying to eat “better” and have gradually switched the family from peanut to almond butter.

Mr. G, being from NY, laughs at me every time I order biscuits & gravy at breakfast – it’s a Southern thing ;)

  33. Judy F on 20 Mar 2010 at 11:36 am #

Spaghetti with Chilli is a favorite. I do like tuna cooked with my mac and cheese.

My grandma used to eat onion sandwiches. ewwee

A co worker puts hot sauce on everything. Her favorite snack is doritos with a dip in the hot sauce.

They have these great 100 cal snacks that are pretzels and chocolate love them.

I love french fries with Frischs tarter sauce on them.

  34. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 11:56 am #

I love Hawaiian pizza, Deb, but never tried it with olives or sauerkraut!

My dad always ate cold meatloaf sandwiches, NancyG. I have to agree with Mr. G on the raisins too.

I’ve heard of onion sandwiches, Judy, but never saw one.

  35. Rebecca on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:15 pm #

I eat turkey sandwiches with cottage cheese and mustard on them. It sounds like a strange combination, but I’ve been eating them since I was a kid, and have always adored them. :-)

I second the Stephanie Plum chips/tuna/pickle combo. That’s a great one.

  36. Mason on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:42 pm #

Try dill pickles and eggs or the sweet midget pickles and eggs. Strange but good.

  37. Madeline Hunter on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:52 pm #

I have been known to put potato chips on sandiches. I think they go well with tuna fish salad sandiches, and genoa salami sandiches. Just a few, for crunch. Not very daring, I guess. I like sour cream and bananas, which is not very daring either.

Someone mentioned chili spaghetti. This is big in Cincinnatti, I think. It was one dish that sounded sort of “ew” to me, but that tasted very good. It just didn’t taste like normal spaghetti. It is its own thing.

Here in Pittsburgh, there is a famous sandwich that the locals die for. They put the french fries and cole slaw on the sandwich itself, along with the meats and cheeses. DH took me for one when we first moved here and it was sort of gross and very messy. I really get in trouble when I say that around here because it is such a tradition here.

  38. Madeline Hunter on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:53 pm #

Hey, cold meatloaf sandwiches are the best reason to make meatloaf.

  39. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 1:24 pm #

Rebecca–a lot of people seem to put cottage cheese on a lot of things. IV puts salt and pepper on his cottage cheese, something I never got.

Sweet pickles and eggs sounds intriguing, Mason.

Madeline–I’ve heard of that sandwich with the fries and cole slaw. What’s it called? Never been to Pittsburgh but I just might try one if I ever get there.

  40. Kathy on 20 Mar 2010 at 1:53 pm #

the only thing I use cottage cheese for is the center of lasagna.

  41. cail on 20 Mar 2010 at 1:59 pm #

Madeline, that’s one of the best reasons, but the better reason is to have enough meatloaf leftovers for meatloaf pizza. Yum!

And sour cream is a must have for meatloaf for me too. Your IV is very smart!

  42. Janae on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:25 pm #

I love sour cream on my hashbrowns.

One of my sisters used to put ketchup on her white rice. Actually, she put ketchup on everything. Then, the ketchup changed to ranch.

My ds likes to dip his food. It changes depending on what he’s eating, but he likes soy, teriyaki, and sweet and sour sauces, along with ranch.

No weird food combos for my dd because she’s not a big food fan. She definitely eats to live and that’s about it.

  43. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:47 pm #

It’s been so long since I MADE lasagne, Kathy, I forgot about that.

Meatloaf pizza, Cail? Really? I’m intrigued.

Sour cream on hashbrowns makes sense to me. But ketchup on rice? Hmm.

  44. Ann in IL on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:48 pm #

One of my co-workers tells us about her favorite. Peanut butter, hot dog and orange marmalade. She says the heat from the hot dog melts the PB. YUK. She has actually volunteered to bring the fixins and make them for us for lunch. She has had no takers so far.

My weird sandwich is roast beef, american cheese, Miracle Whip, Frenchs mustard and sweet pickles on raisin bread.

  45. Ann in IL on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:49 pm #

My nephew eats leftover spaghetti in a sandwich

  46. Kathy on 20 Mar 2010 at 3:41 pm #

me too Lori. I used to make a mess of mini lasagnas for the freezer, but got out of the habit and now just buy it when I crave it

  47. Madeline Hunter on 20 Mar 2010 at 3:57 pm #

lori, the sandwich is the standard fare at a place called Primanti’s. To really do it right, you have go to one in the city. The outlets in the burbs and at the ball park are considered not up to par with the old ones in town. I saw the same sandwich once on the Food network at someplace in a different city. They stole it, though. They had not been in business long enough to be able to claim they invented it. The thing is massive and I still thought it was sort of gross mostly because the mix of french fries and cole slaw in every bite just ruined both for me.

  48. Madeline Hunter on 20 Mar 2010 at 3:58 pm #

Ann in Ill, the only thing I find weird about that sandwich is the raisin bread.

  49. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 4:06 pm #

I’ve never had any kind of sandwich on raisin bread, Ann.

I bet that sandwich is messy, Madeline. One you need to eat with a knife and fork. But I suppose that’s frowned on. Gotta get messy to do it right.

  50. Paula on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:03 pm #

I love french fries with mayo, Mmmmm
When I was litle I used to eat jam and cheese sandwiches!! can’t stand them now. My youngest loves mayo with suasages!! In fact if I’d let him he’d eat mayo with most things but it has to be french mayo so when we go on holiday to france we have to bring back tons of the stuff. Must admit I now find it hard to eat hellmans mayo.

  51. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:53 pm #

Jam and cheese. That’s a new one, Paula.

  52. Robin/RBL on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:17 pm #

How about fried bologna and a fried egg on 2 pieces of white bread, and add mustard. For breakfast. LOL

I also like ketchup on fried potatos (but not eggs!).

Once when I had to stop eating butter or margarine for almost a year, I ate ketchup on my baked potato and that was fine too for me.

My dh eats chocolate oreo’s and potato chips. He also likes spaghetti sandwiches.

I guess my weirdest thing (that most people make fun of me for) is that I don’t drink milk anymore and had stopped eating cereal (which I loved) and then after 5 years, I saw John Tesh who used to be on Entertainment Tonight and he was eating water on his cereal. I tried it and liked it so thats what I’ve done for over 10 years now. You have to start with sweet cereal like Froot Loops or Capt Crunch. Once you get used to the taste, you can then move on to Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies….

    Viva La Fruity Pebbles!

  53. Karen Hawkins on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:20 pm #

I’ve been reading these posts all day and shuddering … but then every once in a while, I’d read something, start to shudder, and then think, “Hm. Why not?”

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to put ketchup on my eggs and make a spaghetti sandwich.

  54. SuzyQ on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:03 pm #

I really don’t have any weird combos but DH likes cut up hot dogs on pizza. The first time he told me to make it that way I thought he was kidding. Now he has the kids liking it too.

  55. LoriHandeland on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:24 pm #

Never had a spaghetti sandwich, Robin, but my mom always fried the spaghetti leftovers to warm them up before the days of microwaves and that was the BEST spaghetti ever.

    Gotcha, KarenH!

I can see where hot dogs on pizza would appeal, SuzyQ , especially to kids. And DHs.

  56. E.R. on 21 Mar 2010 at 12:53 am #

    This is a fun topic!

I don’t consider ketchup and eggs a weird combo, but maybe it is because I like ketchup and eggs combo. Though I don’t mind the norm of just eggs and a piece of toast.

A weird combo would be mayo and eggs sandwich. Mayo, eggs, and cheese sandwich. Yum. Makes me want to whip one up and eat it.

(Alas, my mom will disapprove of me for eating it. Sad but true.)

  57. LoriHandeland on 21 Mar 2010 at 6:53 am #

I was craving the mayo, eggs and cheese combo all day, ER.

  58. Cindi on 21 Mar 2010 at 10:04 am #

My grandmother made me yummy butter and sugar sandwiches on plain old white bread (very squishy!);my aunt made some fun kind of drink that was like a fizzie made with baking soda (?) which I also loved – but I don’t remember how to make them now! My sister loved mayo & onion sandwiches (ugh!) – big, thick slices of white onions. I think I hate onions.

  59. LoriHandeland on 21 Mar 2010 at 10:06 am #

Mmm, Cindi. You made me remember sugar and cinnamon toast with butter. I used to love that!

  60. Tina on 21 Mar 2010 at 11:38 am #

I do not understand ketchup on eggs either.

The one odd thing I do is logical to me. I put maple syrup on eggs (and most omlettes?) and hashbrowns.
My mom used to make pancakes and eggs with the eggs sometimes between the pancakes, so the eggs would get syrup on them. It became automatic to put syrup on eggs even when I started to eat omlettes. Most restaurants put hashbrowns with omlettes. The syrup runs into the hashbrowns softening them up.

Now my mom was kinda odd. She put jelly on the bread of her homemade hamburgers. Chokecherry jelly was the best. We could not figure out where she got the idea. Her brothers, parents and grandparents never did. In 2006, mom and dad, her older brother and s-i-l went to Sweden to visit relatives we have never met. Once of the groups of relatives also put jelly on their hamburger.

  61. LoriHandeland on 21 Mar 2010 at 11:43 am #

Wow, that’s weird about the Swedish relatives with the jelly. Insert Twilight Zone theme here.
