Time To Make The Donuts
Mar 18th 2010
Karen RoseKaren Rose & My Life As A Plebe & On Writing!
“Time to make the doughnuts” means “Time to get to work,” right? Of course it does, if you remember the Dunkin’ Donuts commercial! If you don’t, here’s my favorite Fred the Baker commercial:
“Where’s the beef?!?” means “All flash, no substance,” which you totally get if you remember Clara from the Wendy’s ads in the ’80s.
I love commercials. Mr. R speeds through them or channel surfs during the ads, but I find them fascinating bits of cultural flavor, especially the ones that create expressions or iconic images that live long after the commercial is no more.
“Even Mikey likes it!”
“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”
“Pardon me – can you pass the Grey Poupon?”
Do you remember the Pepsi ad from the ’70’s with that adorable little boy being licked by even more adorable puppies? I can still hear that boy’s laughter ringing in my ears and it still makes me smile. If you’re too young to remember or just want a smile, here’s the link: watch?v=bQYEDLef9iQ
Local ads can be even more fun – the worse the better! Mr. R and I still quote an ad that ran in the Cincinnati market back in the late 80’s – the Buy-Right Kid who sold bargain basement furniture. He had a (bad) band. And a wife who would only feed him frozen cookies for dinner. Did I go to Buy-Right? No way. But 20 years later, I remember the ads almost word for word. I’m not sure if that says something good about the ad-makers or something bad about me, LOL.
Do you like commercials? Watch the Superbowl just for the ads? What commercials have stuck in your head over the years? Do you have a favorite local ad? And the million dollar question – do commercials influence your decision to buy a product?

I don’t think anything could get me to watch sports.
I tend to remember funny commercial. I have a lot I like, but I won’t fill up the blog with all of them
Levis has some of the hottest and funniest commercials. This ones my fave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skWFyop_pxU&feature=related
This one is kinda naughty but omg is it funny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YshubsAZwDU
I have no idea what the product does, but I love reversa commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gW5UrMlFew
The biggest factor when I buy a product is its warranty and customer service. If I have a problem with a product and/or the customer service is unhelpful I tend to not buy anything from that company again. I’m very brand loyal with companies that have good support.

Anyone else hate how dunkin donuts now has the calories listed on the donuts?

Karen, I’m like you. I like the commercials. one of my friends actually sent a new funny one out yesterday. Tell me what you think!

My father used to turn the tv OFF during commercials growing up. It used to drive me nuts!

I adore commercial, I do whizz past a lot, but then go looking for some on youtube that have caught my eye. I don’t get the US feed for the superbowl, so I have to wait until the next day to see the new ads.
I can’t think of any local ads that have caught my eye lately, but there is one for tropicana oj that they made during a sun festival in Nuniivik, Northwest Territoties. the song caught me first…

Hi Karen!
I like funny commercials. I’m with you–dh watches the Superbowl for the football, leaves on the commercials. I’m usually busy, but come in to watch the commercials!
I still wake him up sometimes by saying, “Time to make the donuts!”
Staples had a great run of commercials a while ago. My fave was the ‘back to school’ one. The dad is pushing the cart through the aisles, dancing along lightheartedly behind it. Behind him, the kids are dragging their feet, heads down while “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ plays. Too funny!

I will always have a fond memory of those sappy coke commercials…I’d love to teach the world to sing…But I think my favorite one wasn’t even shown in the U.S. and that is a Carlton Daught commercial sung to the tune of O Fortuna from Carmina Burana. Every time I watch it I smile and think “Guys”. Here’s the YouTube:

Like you, Karen, I sometimes WANT to watch the commercials. Hubby mutes them all, but I watch the funny ones.
One of my earliest memories of returning to the U.S. for furlough after our first four year term in Thailand is of watching Saturday morning cartoons and the commercials. Two commercials in particular stuck in my head: the one with the jingle, “Feelin’ groovy. Just had my Cheerios” and the jingle for Burger King: “It takes two hands to handle a Whopper, a two-fisted burger at Burger King.” (Notice that they’re both about food?) To me, that represented America as much as anything else, since we got American shows in Thailand, but not American commercials.
Hubby and I like to watch that show about the World’s Funniest Commercials.

Hello Ladies: I’m here again, but I don’t know for how long… my two grandma’s are very old and worst every day, one of them is at hospital now (she is 96 years old), she is very ill and the other one needs help to do everything… so I’m very busy helping my mother to take care of them…. I really miss you goddess…
Anyway, talking about commercials…. I don’t like the most of them… I usually change the channel during the commercials… but I suposse that there are commercial that do influence in my decision.
Curiously I remember the commercials that I see when I was a little girl and I’m still remember the songs… they bring to me a very good memories of my childhood.
Actually there is a commercial that it’s my favourite… It’s about a parfum of a very famous spanish designers and the “star” is a very famous spanish actor… I introduce you Miguel Angel Silvestre…. you can see the commercial and I think you’ll undestand because I like this commercial… Please look at his eyes…. and his mouth…. and his body… (Sighs)

I do watch the commericals, especially during the Superbowl. Unless I’ve lost control of the remote, and then I read a book during the commercials because I can’t stand the flipping from channel to channel to avoid the commercials.
Commercials don’t influence me to buy a product since half the time I can’t remember what product the commercial was hyping.
I always liked the McDonalds commercials with the catchy songs–
“You deserve a break today, so get up, get on your way . . .”
Or the classic
“Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese . . .”
Gillian on 18 Mar 2010 at 6:38 am #
I love Coke (but hate how their prices are skyrocketing!) and really enjoy the whole extended Christmas commercial they run here at our local movie theater. A young man wanders through a crowd of friends and family passing out Cokes. And remember the polar bear Coke commercials? LOVE them!
We purposefully DON”T go to Hardee’s because of their heavily-sexed commercials. I figure they’re marketing to 20 yr old guys, and they don’t want my business anyway.
And who isn’t loving the Old Spice commercial right now? We find it especially funny because I love Old Spice and buy it for my husband. I told him he needs a horse.
Michelle B on 18 Mar 2010 at 6:47 am #
Commercials are OK, I’m just as apt to watch them as not. I still sing the Frito Bandito song from my youth. Like Sabrina, I remember watching Saturday morning cartoons with my sister and loving the commercials for toys and games. The closer we’d get to Christmas it was, “I want that!”
Local commercials are a scream. The ones in Montana were so home grown. My favorite was in Dayton, Ohio. This young guy named Jeff was a car salesman and the commercial would have people talking and mention something about car problems and Jeff would pop out and say, “Did I hear someone mention a new car?” Then roll into his shpeel. There were several versions that even had him popping out of a bathtub full of water.
I’m more likely to try a new food from a commercial if I see it in a grocery store, otherwise no, commercials don’t usually make me try products.
Trini on 18 Mar 2010 at 6:48 am #
Ooooppppssss how could I forgot it!!! There’s another commercial that I like very very much… It’s about typical things and products of my region (Galicia). I really love it because it shows very well our way of being and our culture… Now I’m sorry that you don’t understand spanish or galego because the script is very very good and funny too…

Morning everyone! Cail, I have to agree with that ad even tho I worked on the always brand for years. What is this happy period dreck?
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 6:55 am #
Archer, funny! I think the euro ads are a little more overtly sexual, no?
Kathy, I can’t get to your link from where I am (on my iPhone). I’ll check it out when I get home!

Deb, love the Staples ad!!! Kids don’t love it so much. Makes it even better.
Lisa H on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:22 am #
The Staples ad is hands down my favorite.
I too love the Coke ads, especially at Christmastime and the old “I’d like to teach the world to sing…”
I also liked the diet Coke ad where the sexy construction worker takes off his shirt, “Time for a Diet Coke break”
And I don’t remember what product was being advertised, but I always loved that “WAZZZUP” ad from a few years back.
I definitely was swayed by Burger King’s ad of “Have It Your Way” because I hate onions on my cheeseburgers.
I think I am swayed by ads sometimes, although it may be a bit subconscious.
Karen Hawkins on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:24 am #
My lovely goddesses, if you post a link, it will take a while for it to show. But it will. We promise!
These are terrific ads! I am laughing my rump off — and it needs some laughing off, so that’s good.
Here’s my favorite commercial. It’s a local NC furniture company, I think. The commercial is called: The Red House, Where Black People and White People Buy Furniture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnOyMSEWNTs
They’re trying to be so inclusive … it’s pretty funny!
Jessica James on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:40 am #
Oh boy do I remember one from the 70’s in Louisville, KY…Mad Max and his furniture, his line was..”I want to give it away, but my wife won’t let me!” He stood there in a Napoleon outfit, hat included, and stared into the camera sprouting his line. I still remember laughing with my Mom over that guy. Thanks for the memories….
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:47 am #
Kay, I love those sappy old Coke ads. Mean Joe Green and the little kid is classic.
Sabrina,I remember those Cheerios ads. I remember one where they threw a frisbee and wore blue ljeans. Sounds weird now but I was 12 before I owned jeans. I soooo wanted to be like those Cheerio kids!
Julia London on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:48 am #
My favorite of the recent batch of commercials is the one with Betty White playing football and smack-talking. I thought that was hilarious. But I can’t remember what it was advertising.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:52 am #
Karen H and Jessica – I love local ads. Well sometimes, lol. Wehave one here in tampa with these three guys selling floor tile. They scream at the camera and shake like wet dogs. Hate those guys. But the Napoleon guy sounds great!
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 7:56 am #
Julia, anything w Betty White is great. That ad is for Snickers.
LisaH, love love love the diet coke guy ad!!! His name wasLucky. Wonder what he looks like now.

Karen,
The Euro ads are definitely more sexual, but still tasteful. Australian ads seem to be pretty racy.
This is a great one that I saw when I was in London. I am sooo tempted to do the same thing when I have kids

For current ones, I like the e*trade baby. The Betty White ad was great. I like it when companies have the guts to take a risk – that catches my attention more then anything.
I remember when they introduced “Jack” from Jack in the Box. He walks into the boardroom, leaves a box, leaves and blows up the board of directors. Tag line: “Jack is Back”
Brilliant.
I rarely watch TV, so I don’t catch ads very often. I had dreams of going into advertising when I was a young pup, but life went other directions (not to mention the wrong information about being a creative director ran me off.. harumph) So I really am fascinated with it. Sadly companies step on their own feet now and turn out really boring, very safe, crap.
Rachel Gibson on 18 Mar 2010 at 8:46 am #
I usually don’t like tv ads, but the Progressive ad with the “European shoulder bag” cracks me up.
Madeline Hunter on 18 Mar 2010 at 9:05 am #
I like really creative commercials. I enjoy watching those shows that come on sometimes showing commercials from other countries that are award winners. On the other hand, I’m not sure they influence me to buy. I guess if they create name recognition they might eventually, and that is what they are intended to do.
But there have been some that were really popular only no one remembered the company just the ad! And I find that I tend to remember long term the ones that do hook to the company really clearly. Like the Dr. Pepper ones (I’m a pepper, she’s a pepper, he’s a pepper, don’t you want to be a pepper too?).
One thing about some ads that amuses me is when they use some cultural icon that only the older members of the audience will recognize. In the 80s there was one with a reference to the old show The Rifleman. I wondered what the younger people made out of that. The show ended decades before they were born! The actor was unknown to them, for all intents and purposes, and I’m sure they did not “get it.”
Madeline Hunter on 18 Mar 2010 at 9:09 am #
It has been so long since I have seen any hokey local ads, but we have a local guy advertising now. He runs a car dealership, and he has his whole spiel and personna. It is almost a parody of local ads, though. Like some slick ad guy convinced him that local ads need to be hokey, so let’s hoke it up to get attention. I do notice him, though. Can’t tell you which dealership it is, though.
Claudia Dain on 18 Mar 2010 at 9:43 am #
I skip through the ads, Big D loves to watch them. I like the funny/clever ones, like the Progressive “European shoulder bag” Rachel mentioned.
Janae on 18 Mar 2010 at 9:53 am #
Here’s a bunch of Montana ads that aired in Bozeman, Montana, in the early 90s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPk-9WNFrLI The quality of local commercials in Montana haven’t really changed since then either.
Whatever happened to jingles? It’s like they disappeared – Rice a Roni – A San Franscico Treat? Or the Shower to Shower ads; Zest; etc. There were some great jingles in the 80s that I can still remember 30 years later.
In general I don’t watch much tv because I’m reading. It’s nice to have a quiet house once the kids are in bed. But I wish they’d bring back the hot guy Diet Coke ad from the 90s.

that mom tantrum ad reminded me of the time my slightly( 20mos) older brother and I went grocery shopping with our mom as young adults. We must have both thought of ot the same time becaseu once our mom hit the cereal aisle we started throwing sugar cereal at the cart and mock whining ” mon, buy this kind!”

From my childhood, the 70s in NY when they installed police and fire call boxes on street corners:
The policeman showed us how to use it by pressing the “Fire” button.
The disembodied voice said “Fiah duhpahtment. Whair’s the fiah?” in perfect Brooklynese.
My memory of this has lasted longer than the call boxes.
Kay on 18 Mar 2010 at 10:46 am #
Well, I don’t want to date myself, but what about when cigarettes used to be advertised? Remember the Marlborough man? And the woman in the pearls advertising refrigerators? And, I’m surprised no one has brought up those butter commercials with Fabio. I thought those were rather amusing.

We have a local car dealership which began a series of adds a few years ago featuring the “Trunk Monkey.” Truly hilarious.

My fav ad from the past, the one that set some kind of “make it memorable” standard for all future ads, were the Alka Seltzer ones, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.” “You ate it, Ralph.” LOL I still laugh thinking about it.

Lori, when I was a kid we had contests to see who could sing the big mac song the fastest. I ecall mcd’s giving out prizes. Would have been 1974. I was in the fifth grade. Can’t recall my teacher that year but I remember the mcd’s jingle.

Sheridan, the Jack in box is creepy. But the burger king is the Creepiest!!! whose idea was that anyway? I guess now it’s become something of a cult following.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 12:21 pm #
Ronlyn, how cute! How could u be mad? Smart boy.
Janae, true. Where are the jingles? Mr. R and I can sing all the major jingles from our childhood and often do, if for no other reason than to annoy the kids. Lol.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 12:25 pm #
MAdeline, I hated dr. Pepper but loved the jingle. There was a dance that went with it as I recall.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 12:27 pm #

Suzanne Enoch on 18 Mar 2010 at 12:45 pm #
I was trying to think of old commercials that I still remember: “I can’t believe I ate the WHOLE thing.” I think that was from a Pepto Bismol ad when I was a kid. And surprisingly, the Salem cigarettes ad, back when companies could advertise cigarettes on TV. “You can take Salem out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of Sa…lem.” Thankfully I was never tempted to smoke. *g*
Julie Ortolon on 18 Mar 2010 at 1:38 pm #
I’m a commercial junkie! I even watch the “Hello I’m a Mac…” commercials online. LOL Loved going to the Coke museum in Atlanta ans watching thirty straight minutes of old commercials. “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony…” My new favs are the Progressive commercials with Flo.
evlqn on 18 Mar 2010 at 1:41 pm #
I loved the Tasters Choice commercials with Anthony Head in them, hated the product but loved the commercials. The old coke commercials were great. Does anyone remember the commercial where a little boy wants his friend to come out to play but the friend has a temperature. He asks if it hurts to have a temperature.
Local commercials I hate are Mr Appliance and the Keifer Kia Princess ads.
There are some products I wouldn’t use if they were free, Brother for instance. They don’t stand behind their products.
I love the Gecko commercials and some of the caveman ones. The Staples ad with the dad is hysterical! Every year we are in there getting supplies for the plaguelings and I know I want to burst into song myself.

Julie, ahem. I like the “I’m a PC” ads. But I’m glad you like the Mac ones!
And the Windows 7 ads – the one with the little girl making the announcment with glitter fonts and music and unicorns – so freaking adorable. Luckily Windows 7 has lived up to everything I’d hoped for! I’d hate for that little girl to grow up with bad karma, LOL. After Vista, Microsoft owed me.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 1:58 pm #
Evqln – LOVE the Anthony Head Taster’s Choice commercials. Very cool concept. I think TC is a lot more popular in the UK than here. I seem to recall drinking it in a lot of hotels in the UK, anyway.
Remember the dude that switched the coffee at the “famous New Orleans” restaurant for Folgers?
And the holiday Folgers when the brother comes home from college, just in time for the holidays? Always makes me teary.
And the Hallmark commercials… Freddie and Sam. Say no more.
And the AT&T commercials from the 80’s. “He just called to say … I love you.” Bawwwwl.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 1:59 pm #
Suzie, I can’t remember many of the cigarette commercials. I’m older than you, so I should remember them.

I love commercials. The staples ad was a favorite of my dads.
My favorite christmas one is with the hershey kisses playing a tune and the last one goes phew at the end.
Another christmas one is the m&m guys with santa… They do exist. LOL
Karen do you remember the Kwik brothers from Cinti?
The coke commerical… I like to teach the world to sing…
I also like the Target ads, they are always very visually appealing and snappy.
Sabrina Jeffries on 18 Mar 2010 at 2:44 pm #
Yeah, Karen, Vista got Mac tons of business. *G*
I love those Mac commercials, and I like the Progressive woman, and I love the baby e-trade ads. I also like the French Canadian guy free credit report.com ads. He’s so cute!

“Yeah…that’s got to go.”

Years ago there was an ad for something, no longer remember what, a guy was driving down the street with the top down, listening to the radio traffic report. Just as the voice announced “Pot holes on Pico”, the car dropped from sight. To this day when we hit a rough patch of road we say “Pot holes on Pico.” The g-sons don’t get it but all of us who lived in LA do.
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 8:20 pm #
Evqlyn, Pot holes on Pico – funny! Those are the local color ads I think are the best. They create a sense of community.
Pesky, I haven’t seen the clown commercial. Not sure I want to …
DebH – Mr. R and I still do that BAWK, BAWK, too! Mr. R is so adorable when he says that, like we’re 17 again
Claudia – there is another version of that reenactment ad. The character is a middle-aged guy, not bad looking but you know, average. In his mind he looks like a romance novel cover model, with his hair blowing and everything. So funny!!
Karen Rose on 18 Mar 2010 at 8:21 pm #
Mr. R and I just made the dog nutso by singing the MeowMeowMeowMeow song LOUDLY. Cats ignored us. I love that man.

I watched those shows that show the worst/sexiest/funniest/etc. commercials ever. They make me laugh.
One of my faves:
DISNEY Magic Happens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA93vBjD4EU
Karen Rose on 19 Mar 2010 at 12:18 am #
ER – how sweet! I hadn’t seen that Disney commercial before. Makes you wonder what happened after the fade out
Usually Disney is hawking its name or the parks or Moichindizing. Don’t get me wrong. I am a card-carrying Disney-phile. I have a season pass. But this is sweet – selling the Disney feeling.
The magic. Ah.
E.R. on 19 Mar 2010 at 4:07 pm #
K.R., I don’t care about the brand, but the message is so SWEET! That’s why I adore that commercial.
I got another commercial in mind, but it seems that I can’t find it around and/or my memory is faulty so that it may not be a commercial at all. But is is a SONY commercial featuring its camcorder and a song by the MANHATTANS. It’s SO sweet and I really adore that, along with the DISNEY one.
