Celebs Behaving Well

pierce_brosnan

We hear a lot about celebrities who behave badly, mostly because they show up in the tabloids making fools of themselves. But we rarely hear about the ones who live stellar lives. So I thought I’d mention a few who’ve caught my attention.

Pierce Brosnan: I’ve had a crush on the guy from the day I saw him on Remington Steele, but I really fell in love with him when I read about him and his two wives. His first wife died of cancer at the age of 43, and when she fell ill, he put his career on hold to be with her. By then, he’d already adopted her two children by a previous husband. He got the Bond role a few years after her death and could have had any young thing he wanted. Instead, he married a journalist only ten years his junior, and together they support a number of charities and are active in other causes. Everything I read about him shows him to be a good, stand-up guy. Kudos to Brosnan!

streepMeryl Streep: Okay, I’m not going through the cast of Mamma Mia purposely, but she’s another impressive one. Not only is she a brilliant actress, but she has been married to the same man for 40+ years, has four kids who seem to adore her, seems genuinely nice in interviews, and supports several charities. Before her husband, she was engaged to a man who got bone cancer, and she too took a leave from acting to be there for him until his death. Go, Meryl!

alyssa-milanoAlyssa Milano: On the marriage front, she’s had some rockier times than the above two (she’s on her second marriage), but I admire her for two things–her perseverance despite her dyslexia, and her charitable work, which is considerable. Also, you never hear about her in the tabloids doing stupid things like running over ex-husbands she hates or driving drunk.

WeirdAlYankovicWeird Al Yankovich: First, I admire him for making a success out of doing novelty songs. He’s hard-working and highly respected in the music industry. He’s happily married and a general nice guy, according to just about everybody who works with him or knows him. His fans love him for that. And he too supports charities.

There’s lots more, but we never hear about them. So tell me, who are some of the celebrities who’ve impressed you by behaving well? Who do you admire and why? If you hear something good about a celebrity, does it make you more inclined to support the work they do or is that even a factor for you?

I have heard that Tom Hanks has been married forever. The little bit that I have heard is good.

Johnny Depp came to my mind immediately when I read today’s blog. Not only did he move away from the hectic America but he also settled down somewhere in southern France at what must be a quiet and peaceful place. He’s married to a French singer with a tooth gap and you sometimes wonder what he – as one of the most beautiful men ever – sees in that woman, but the two seem genuinely happy when you see them together. They have two cute little kids and – if you hear about their private life which is not often the case – you only hear good and admirable things about them. I like that. :)

I almost put Johnny Depp on there, LisaK! I admire him because he always took projects he believed in. And when he did agree to the Disney pirate movies, he did it HIS way, which freaked the Disney guys out. Yet he proved (of course) that talent always trumps the suits any day and that you can only have success in creative endeavors if you follow your muse.

Tina, I should look up Tom Hanks! I’ve always thought he seemed like a really nice guy.

Another one I meant to add was Mark Harmon. He’s been married once, to Pam Dawber, for twenty-four years. His kids seem well-adjusted, he’s a compelling actor on NCIS, AND he once saved two teenage boys from a burning car that crashed outside his home. You don’t get more heroic than that!

  4. Freedom Writer on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:39 am #

How about a couple of old timers like Paul Newmann and Robert Redford. Also from Mamma Mia there is Colin Firth. On the female side, I like Sandra Bullock. All of these actors have managed to stay out of the bad spotlight.

  5. Gillian on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:54 am #

I really like Sting. I know he has a charitable foundation set up with his wife to benefit the rain forests. He usually seems to be involved in other things like that as well. But I’m almost afraid to mention him, for fear someone’s going to tell me something terrible he did. I’m usually pretty clueless about celebrities and their lives.

  6. Pesky on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:57 am #

Yeah for every Lindsay Lohan you miss the ones that do good. Young Hollywood seems to have quite a few.:

    1. Kristen Stewart: In the midst of all of the Twilight hooplah, took time to do the juvenile diabetes walk.
    2. Ashley Greene: Supports a charity that takes in gently used promwear to redistribute to girls who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go to prom.
    3. Kellen Lutz: Very visible right from the beginning for donations for Haiti.

Have they made every right decision? Nah, but they seem to have their hearts in the right place.

And then of course there is our generation:

    1. Leonardo DeCaprio: Environmental Activist.
    2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Put aside the adoption of kids from other countries and their other quirks and there is a solid foundation of giving every time they are needed. Their work after Katrina still continues.
    3. Sandra Bullock: Yep, she seems to have it together. Another person who gives whenever the need is there. She has a solid marriage and is well liked in the industry.
    4. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick: Solid marriage, kids…what more can you ask for?
    5. Michael J. Fox: All around good guy.

  7. Pesky on 06 Feb 2010 at 7:05 am #

Does it make me more inclined to support the work they do?

Actually yes. When I hear a star is awful in person and unkind to others I tend to avoid their work. People should not be rewarded to behaving badly. Does it always work out that I can do this? No, sadly…horrid people work with nice people all the time. However, the horrid actors have their “pet” projects, and I don’t go to see them. :D

—Alert, off-topic alert—I can receive but not send emails. I’m going to try and get that fixed today.

  9. LoriHandeland on 06 Feb 2010 at 7:41 am #

I always thought Paul Newman was great. Married forever, not impressed by the spotlight, spoke his mind and great salad dressing.

Celebrities aren’t a factor to me in supporting causes.

  10. Judy F on 06 Feb 2010 at 7:48 am #

My number one is George Clooney. He is always willing to organize things for people in need. He doesn’t just talk the talk he walks it. His efforts in Africa are well know.

I agree on Sandra Bullock and Mark Harmon. I saw recentley someone interviewing Sandra about her donation to the Haiti relief. The reporter was trying to make a big deal out of the amount she was giving. Sandra just said, that she was able to do it and any amount every gave is a big deal.

Princess Diane’s sons, you can tell she still infulences them in their charity work.

  11. TrishD on 06 Feb 2010 at 8:08 am #

Gillian, Sting was my first thought too. I been a huge fan of his since I “discovered” The Police on MTV. He and Trudie have been marrid forever and I’ve never heard anything bad about him.

I think my favs are Dana and Christopher Reeve. Their love story is just amazing and even after being gone all these years their legacy still lives on.

  12. Michelle B on 06 Feb 2010 at 8:46 am #

Although not a movie star, and it is Super Bowl weekend…Peyton Manning. The guy works hard at his craft, supports charities, has a good sense of humor, is close to his family, and is loved. I’ve always been impressed that he came back for his senior year in college when he could have easily jumped to the pros. He didn’t win the Heisman trophy for his efforts and my beloved Huskers beat them in their bowl game that year, but he is a stand up guy.

  13. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 9:21 am #

Definitely Paul Newman. I always thought his relationship with Joanne Woodward was amazing–I can’t believe they were married for 50 years!

Freedom, I don’t know much about Redford’s personal life, oddly enough. And Colin Firth’s either. I assume they’re both married. I saw Firth on the Daily Show the other day, and he was so engaging, it just made me like him all over again.

As for Sandra Bullock, I’m a huge fan and she seems genuinely nice.

    Sting, too, seems great.

Pesky, this is how out of touch I am–I don’t know who the three people you listed as good ones of the young generation are. How pathetic am I? But I agree with you on the others (although Angelina Jolie creeps me out a little). Brad Pitt HAS done a great deal for New Orleans, and for that I will always love him. And yes, Michael J. Fox is a real inspiration.

  14. Rachel Gibson on 06 Feb 2010 at 9:21 am #

Sandra Bullock. She seems nice and sensible and I don’t know her politics. I appreciate that in a celeb.

  15. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 9:28 am #

Pesky, I know what you mean about being unable to vote with your dollars where movies are concerned, since they contain more than one person. BUT I have been known to refuse to see a movie because someone I hate was behind it. Although come to think of it, that’s an author, usually *G*.

But Lori, are causes a factor for you in supporting celebrities?

Judy F, yes, Clooney seems to be a genuinely fine man. So does Tom Selleck, come to think of it, though why I always put those two men together in my mind I don’t know. And I didn’t know that the princes were that active in charities–that’s great!

TrishD, I know, Christopher Reeve and his wife were truly inspiring.

Michelle, I’m so torn about Peyton Manning. On the one hand, he’s New Orleans born and bred. On the other, he’s playing for the Colts!!! And I so, so, SO want the Saints to win this weekend. Go, Saints!!! Who dat say they gonna beat dem Saints?

  16. Kathy on 06 Feb 2010 at 10:18 am #

Sandra Bullock has always been a fav.
Nicole Kidman is a good girl too.
    Julia Roberts
    Jennifer Garner
    Brendan Fraser
Ben Stiller has been scandal free, although I don’t always like his movies.
    Bruce Willis

I had to go away and think about who I like vs who I hear about all the time

  17. Karen Rose on 06 Feb 2010 at 10:46 am #

I follow Alyssa Milano on twitter and have been impressed with her charity work and common sense attitude. She’s got a new sitcom airing soon – “Romantically Challenged.” Because I like her, yeah, I’ll definitely give her new show a try! I loved her in Charmed and have been hoping to see her again in TV land.

Nia Vardalos (Greek Wedding) is another celeb who seems genuinely nice. She has adopted a child domestically and is a spokesperson for adoption. I like that, too.

One who’s behind the camera is Hart Hanson, the creator/producer of Bones. I liked him before, because he seems very down to earth, fun, and approachable. Recently one of the Bones former cast members (Eric Millegan/Zack Addy) has revealed he was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder when the show first started filming. Hanson was there for Eric in a way that made a huge difference, even though they’d just met. Hanson seems like a very, very genuine man.

  18. Louisa Cornell on 06 Feb 2010 at 11:21 am #

I always admired Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward – their marriage and their charity work.

And I am so glad you mentioned Pierce Brosnan. His marriages and his charity work are inspirational to be sure.

Sandra Bullock seems very down to earth and gives to charity because it is the right thing to do, not because it is good for her image.

Tom Hanks and his wife seem to have avoided the scandal spotlight and seem to be a very down to earth couple.

Prince Harry and Prince William spend quite a bit of time working with their mother’s charities from all accounts. I have friends in England who have remarked on some of the places these two boys have shown up unannounced and done the actual work of the charities – cleaning up trash, feeding people in soup kitchens, visiting aids patients. Not all of it has been photo opped either.

  19. Louisa Cornell on 06 Feb 2010 at 11:22 am #

AND … WHO DAT GONNA WIN DAT SUPERBOWL ???? GO SAINTS !!!!!!

  20. Janae on 06 Feb 2010 at 11:50 am #

Pierce Brosnan is a definite favorite of mine. So is Gary Sinise. My dh worked with him and had nothing, but nice things to say about him. Sinise founded Operation Iraqi children, where people donate school supplies, clothing, shoes, etc, and US troops actually deliver the items, building a positive link between the Iraqi people and the troops. They’ve, also, started doing that in Afghanistan as well. He supports a number of other charities, including the USO. He and his band, The Lieutenant Dan Band, have played for the troops all over the world.

  21. Lisa H on 06 Feb 2010 at 12:58 pm #

Woo Hoo to see Johnny Depp mentioned. Aside from his incredible ability as an actor, I find him humble and he seems to be a wonderful father. Last year he donned Capt. Jack garb and entertained children in the hospital in London that saved his daughter’s life. He also made a contribution of 2 million dollars to said hospital.

  22. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 1:09 pm #

Kathy, Ben Stiller’s movies are hit or miss for me, but Hubby loves him. I don’t know anything about his personal life, though. What do you know?

Karen, I didn’t know that about Nia Vardalos. I have to say that while I loved My Greek Wedding, I wasn’t as keen on Love in Ruins. And you’re right–there are lots of great people behind the scenes as well. BTW, I loved Alyssa Milano on Charmed. She recently had a guest role on Castle, and I was so delighted to see her.

Louisa, that’s really great to hear about the princes. They have every reason not to care, and the fact that they do is nice.

Janae, I love Gary Sinise as an actor, but had no idea he did all that other stuff. That’s great! And I love the name of his band!

Yes, Lisa H, Johnny Depp really does seem to be a great father.

  23. alisha on 06 Feb 2010 at 1:13 pm #

Michael J Fox- For everything. He has a wonderful marriage( 22 years I believe), Great actor, and most of all not running away and hiding when he found out he had Parkinsons disease. He is a great advocate for finding a cure for this horrible disease. I recommend reading his book Looking Up.
Drew Barrymore because she has pulled herself up and tried to fix herself and her life after such a drama filled childhood.
Sandra Bullock is also great for her charity work and staying out of the tabloids.

  24. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 1:19 pm #

Alisha, I like Michael’s wife a lot, too–Tracy Pollan. I always liked her as an actress, but I gather that she really put her career on hold for her children (they have four).

And you’re definitely right about Drew–she really did fix herself, which is very impressive.

  25. Michelle B on 06 Feb 2010 at 1:25 pm #

The Colts aren’t my #1 NFL team, but I’ve said from August that this is going to be Peyton’s year as a quarterback. MVP, check. Super Bowl bound, check. Sorry Saints’ fans, I’m pulling for the Colts. Peyton and Company will get the job done.

  26. Tanya on 06 Feb 2010 at 1:51 pm #

I have to mention Dustin Hoffman. when I was a kid I worked for a ranch that did birthday parties for kids. people would hire us to bring ponies out to the parties for the kids to ride. Dustin Hoffman hired us and we didn’t know it was him we just knew the people who had hired us were extremely wealthy. we got there early and got the ponies ready then we just hung out waiting until it was time. while we were waiting his wife came out and offered us drinks then when we came in they were so nice and fun we still didn’t realize it was Dustin Hoffman he just looked really familiar to us. when we finished they asked us to stay for cake and ice cream and hot dogs. we couldn’t stay cause we had another appointment when we left they tipped us generously and when we looked at the check that was when we realized why he looked so familiar. His brother hired us a few months later they were also very nice. I have always thought highly of him since.
plus I love his work so much

  27. KellyP on 06 Feb 2010 at 2:14 pm #

Well I am going to have to say Bryce Courtnay and my other favorite authors. You just don’t hear a peep about them in the tabloids or on the news. You all work so hard for very little pay (from what I understand) and bring such joy to those who love to read. I am sure that you all have your various charities that you support and have such strong relationships with the important people in your lives. You all deserve a gold star.

  28. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 3:13 pm #

Well, Michelle, you know I”m pulling for the Saints. But it’s going to be very weird watching Archie cheering for the Colts, I tell you!

Tanya, what a story! That’s a really lovely tale.

KellyP, thanks so much. You’re so sweet! Authors make varying amounts of money (some of us ARE paid very well, but of course nowhere near as well as actors or musicians), but many more are paid much less than they’d make in some good day job somewhere (which is why many of them HAVE day jobs *G*). It’s funny that you should say this, though, because it occurred to me after I wrote this that you almost never hear anything bad about authors in the tabloids. I mean, I guess there must be SOME bad boys and girls out there, but we either don’t rate the press (which is probably most of it) or we mostly live pretty boring lives. I mean, do you ever hear about J.K. Rowling shaving her head in a fit of pique? Nope. She’s too busy establishing charities. *G*

  29. Karen Hawkins on 06 Feb 2010 at 4:40 pm #

    Hugh Jackman.

Ok, you all KNEW that was coming. I love him for many personal reasons beyond his astounding good looks. You never hear about him drinking or partying or being foolish. He married an older woman and to this day, seems very devoted to her. He is frequently seen toting his children around town with him. I love that in a man — steadfast AND child-oriented. Ok, the buns of steel don’t hurt, either.

He also does a ton of community work. His facebook ad calling for donations for Haiti was up within two days of the disaster. That’s awesome.

I also love Johnny Depp and Pierce Brosnan, too. Both of them seem determined to have healthy, normal relationships and both have taken some chances on various parts they’ve played, especially Johnny.

Btw, I once saw an article where his agent talked about what he was like to work with — apparently he’s a super nice and polite guy, but hates planning. For an agent, that’s not a good thing!

  30. Nicole Jordan on 06 Feb 2010 at 5:00 pm #

I love this blog, Sabrina! Makes me tear up. And I love all the nominees everyone has made, too. It’s true, the good guys and gals don’t get the headlines or kudos they deserve. I second all these!

As for the Super Bowl, I have to root outwardly for Indi– since we have friends coming over to watch who are from there and we promised to support them because they know everyone else is going to be rooting for the underdogs. BUT… I’m secretly rooting for the Saints. What a miraculous recovery after the devastating effects of Katrina. Plus my mom’s from Louisiana, with family in NO, so I have some roots there.

  31. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 5:17 pm #

Well, Karen, OF COURSE we must include Hugh! :-)

Nicole, I forgive you for not rooting for the Saints publicly, as long as you do it secretly. *EG*

  32. Karen Hawkins on 06 Feb 2010 at 5:19 pm #

Sabrina, I’m for the Colts. Wanna make a little wager?

    Or are you afraid? (teehee!)

  33. nancyg on 06 Feb 2010 at 8:35 pm #

Well, if K-Hawk is going with Hugh, I’m going with Colin Firth, continuing Sabrina’s Mamma Mia thread. He’s been married 10+ years to the same woman, always very well-natured in interviews. Plus – he’s also an author – a short story in a book edited by Nick Hornby, proceeds of which went to a charity for autistic children. He grew up in Nigeria for a few years & supports several charities involved in tribal rights & free-trade. OK, I’m finished gushing now.

  34. Karen Hawkins on 06 Feb 2010 at 10:13 pm #

nancyg, I never knew that about Colin Firth! I’m going to read up on him … he’s quite yummy AND now I find out he’s a good guy, too — wowza. Thanks for the head’s up! :)

  35. Sabrina Jeffries on 06 Feb 2010 at 10:30 pm #

Karen, I was thinking the same thing–that I didn’t know that about Colin, especially the part about the charity for autistic children. Wow, that’s cool!

And yes, I’m up for a wager–sure! I am NOT afraid!

  36. evlqn on 07 Feb 2010 at 12:07 am #

Harry Connick Jr. is still working to help Katrina victims, especially the musicians down there.
Paul Newman is at the top of my list of truly good guys. The princes are very active in various charities. A couple of months ago Prince William spent the night sleeping on the street to highlight the homeless plight in Great Britain.

  37. Kathleen O on 07 Feb 2010 at 11:36 am #

Paul Newman would be on the top of my list too.. He and his wife Joanne were married for over 50 years and all the great works he did and I believe she still does… And what about Jay Leno..he has done some very good charity work. Auctions off his cars and motor bikes for good causes and has been married to his wife Mavis for over 30 yrs..
Of course George and the two princes are side by side with Paul in my book..

  38. jackie on 08 Feb 2010 at 12:45 pm #

Sandra Bullock – she is always one of the first celebrities to make a donation when there is a disaster and she makes no fuss about doing it. Ron Howard – we all watched him grow up but I do not remember seeing him on the cover of a supermarket tabloid. Paul Newman . . . he was all that is good about the film industry . . . he was true eye candy, he entertained us, and his charitable works were incredible.

  39. Debbie on 08 Feb 2010 at 4:09 pm #

Pierce Brosnan, yum. Have become a fan of this site but yummy men definately keep me coming back. As for rewriting books the original is probly best but I like how some authors put a symbol on the book that makes it stand out to let you know you may have bought that book before.

  40. Bron on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:06 pm #

Emma Watson – it is wonderful to hear about a young incredibly successful (and rich) young lady who has not gone of the rails. I’ve never seen any reports of her misbehaving and even with all her money she has gone to a very good university and is doing well. With so many young women with too much money (think Paris, Lindsay) completely out of control, Emma is a breath of fresh air.

  41. qotu on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:06 pm #

Joel Madden. Even though he is pretty young and in a rock group too (Good Charlotte) You don’t read of him acting like a horse’s patoot. He also seems to have been a tremendously good influence on Nicole Richie. They seem like a really happy family.

  42. Joy on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:11 pm #

I would have to say Ellen Degeneres is one actress and talk show host that admire. She constantly seems
to be doing things to help out people and special causes.

  43. Gramjak on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:27 pm #

Brad Pitt has been very involved in New Orleans revitalization, gave Million to build hospital in his hometown of Springfield, MO, and has been a big influence in celebs donating to Haiti relief. Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, and Hugh Jackman all have my vote as good people who happen to be stars.

  44. Kristen Eby on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:29 pm #

I love Johnny Depp, always have…..BUT, when he recently defended Roman Polanski…I am soooooo disappointed and feel a bit betrayed to be honest. It seems to taint his work a little bit now.

  45. Stacia on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:44 pm #

My favorite actor right now is Alexander Skarsgard he is very gorgeous and does not want to use his looks to get roles he rather play roles with depth. He is also involved in good causes and seems to be upstanding. I like George Clooney he is involved with good causes. There are many people who don’t get recognized for the things they do actors do because they are in the public eye. I am glad to here that they are concerned about causes and that they do help because they do make a difference.

  46. Margaret Imecs on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:02 pm #

Meryl she’s my role model!!! I love her :)

  47. Katie on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:27 pm #

Gary Snise is our new Bob Hope with all the things he does for the troops

  48. Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:44 pm #

eviqn, I agree–Harry Connick Jr. is a great guy.

Kathleeen, yes, Jay Leno! He seems like a fine man, too.

Jackie, you’re so right about Ron Howard. I wonder if that’s partly because he came from an acting family. His father was an actor and his brother, too. It probably keeps you down to earth.

Debbie, glad you’ve become a fan of the site!

Joy, I almost included Ellen in the list–she really is one of my favorite celebs, especially since she’s originally from New Orleans.

Bron, I’m not sure who Emma Watson is. The name sounds familiar, though.

qoto, same thing for Joel Madden. I am SO out of touch sometimes.

Gramjak, I didn’t know about Brad Pitt helping his hometown. That’s so great!

  49. Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:46 pm #

Kristen, I hadn’t hear about Johnny and the Roman Polanski thing. Weird.

Stacia, is Skarsgard the guy who was in An Education? Because if so, I really like him.

Margaret, isn’t Meryl great? She seems so down-to-earth.

Katie, I do like Gary Sinise.

  50. Denise on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:51 pm #

I will have to say Antonio Banderas, he has been married for a while and he supports St. Jude I love that about him.

  51. Brenda Rupp on 08 Feb 2010 at 9:15 pm #

I don’t know what her politics are but I love Sarah Jessica Parker, also Johnny Depp. They keep their private lives private and I like that. As far as someone who supports a charity, I would have to say Brad Pitt, what he has done for Katrina has been amazing, showing up and building houses himself.

  52. Shawa on 08 Feb 2010 at 9:36 pm #

I have to add Jodi Foster. You NEVER hear about her private life except what SHE discloses. She’s never named the father of her children (I think she has two) or the name of her partner. Also, it’s not a secret but because she never talks about her personal life you’d never know that she’s a lesbian. She, too, taakes on projects she believes in and works tirelessly with the SAG to ensure proper working conditions for child actors. Jodi is a class act, no matter how you look at it. I admire her most for leaving acting to get her college degree – Harvard, I seem to recall.

Although she’s been gone some time, Audrey Hepburn still casts a long shadow for her tireless work on children’s causes. Mary Tyler Moore, who works tirelessly for the Juevenile Diabetes Research Fund, once said of Audrey that if ever there was a true Queen of Hollywood it was her. I was fortunate enough to have been acquainted with her as a young teenager – she supported a charity I was heavily involved in – and I never heard her curse, swear, yell or say mean things. I was deeply saddened when she died and I never miss an opportunity to see her in “My Fair Lady” when it’s on.

  53. Tracy on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:00 pm #

My faves are Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward, Sandra Bullock & Pierce Brosnan.
But I did hear a good story about Matthew McConaughey. A friend of mine took his disabled children classroom on a field trip to a state park here in Georgia. He said Matthew came over and started talking to the kids. My friend didn’t know who he was and had to ask one of the other assistants. Matthew spent quite a bit of time talking to all the kids and signed autographs for all of them.

  54. Terry Miller on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:25 pm #

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson come to my mind. I am so impressed with all he has done to bring recognition to the soldiers of WWII. And, I really like Sandra Bullock. She seems very genuine and grounded. I am impressed with celebs that don’t seem to buy into the celebrity lifestyle like Sandra Bullock, Thomas Gibson and Demi Moore. And, yes I think these things do influence how I support their work.

  55. GladysMP on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:26 pm #

Alas it is the bad things that celebrities do that mostly get publicity, so it is indeed refreshing when one hears of a celebrity performing a good act. And, yes, I am impressed negatively or positively by what I read about celebrities. There are certain ones that I would not even consider going to a movie to see or turning on the TV to view. One thing that truly turns me off is a man who can’t keep his pants zipped, like Bill Clinton or Tiger Woods. It irritates me when someone states that “the woman is at fault.” Most think of a situation like Monica who did indeed go along with Bill Clinton’s disreputable actions and they forget about the girl he raped in Arkansas or the wife he pawed when she came to the Oval Office seeking help for her dying husband who did, indeed, die that same day. Those two, and who knows how many more, were not willing victims. The fact that Bill Clinton didn’t even respect the Oval Office itself would keep me from ever admiring that man.

  56. VANISHING WOLF on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:33 pm #

I first heard his memorable name many years ago in Los Angeles and am glad to hear good things about him.

  57. VANISHING WOLF on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:35 pm #

I’ve heard his memorable name for many years both in Los Angels and in San Luis Obispo, CA. In light of that longevity I’m especially glad to learn good things about him as a person.

  58. Annette on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:48 pm #

Thanks for the reminder of the celebs who “lay low”. It is easy to think Hollywood is a wild wild place because that is what we read about. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a publication that focused on the stars/celebs that do good deeds and stay out of trouble? Kind of a “non-enquirer” lol. Some of my favs are: Michael J Fox, MAry Tyler Moore, Danny Thomas, Marlo Thomas, Sandra Bullock…many many more..

  59. Lorraine Larose on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:49 pm #

My favorites! John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Very real people.

  60. Ranurgis on 08 Feb 2010 at 11:00 pm #

As mentioned above, Paul Newman and his family are also great examples. Nia Vardalos grew up in the same city I did. She lived just down the street from author Elizabeth Thornton.

It’s wonderful to hear about the “good” things celebrities do or how they act well. I certainly wish there were more examples of these to read about.

I also like Denzel Washington. I’ve never seen his name in the “rags.” But then, I never really read much about the celebs anyway. Does anybody know what he does off stage?

On the other hand. I wish them privacy. Living in a fishbowl can’t be any fun at all.

  61. Julie S. on 09 Feb 2010 at 1:34 am #

Of course,Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are tops, but another name to add to the list is John Schneider. Not only is he a hunk who’s been married a long time and stayed out of the rag magazines, he has worked along side of Marie Osmond for the Children’s Miracle Network for many years.

  62. debra field on 09 Feb 2010 at 3:23 am #

I have always admired Julia Roberts, and Sandra Bullock. They have class, and don’t mind helping out others.

  63. Susan Spidle on 09 Feb 2010 at 5:10 am #

My favourite celebrity is Shania Twain and I thought she deserved better than Mutt Lang anyway.

  64. amy on 09 Feb 2010 at 6:37 am #

I agree with the choices of the rest of these posters. I’ve also heard Keanu Reeves is a very good person…very honest and genuine…and Ryan Gosling is supposed to be a good person too, never heard bad press about him

  65. Kristen Howe on 09 Feb 2010 at 6:49 am #

I love Alyssa Milano too. Loved her since Who’s the Boss, did a report on her for school. I didn’t know she has dyslexia. She’s a sweet person. I did follow her on Twitter for awhile, until I got hit with Twitter jail. I hope to return to her someday. I would also have to go with Matt Damon, who’s a stand out guy, and agree with some of the others.

  66. Cheryl English on 09 Feb 2010 at 8:22 am #

I have a longing respect for Oprah Winfrey. She has a fantastic show with numerous topics. She is always donating her time and money for great causes when needed. She also has paved the road to success for numerous other talent like Rachael Ray, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, etc. She also promotes authors books to try and help them get their books out there. She has my heart for talent and compassion for others. Great Lady!

  67. Nancy Lee Badger on 09 Feb 2010 at 9:26 am #

My husband and I both adore Toby Keith and Kelly Pickler. Both show their gratitude for achieving their fame as country singers by visiting the soldiers stationed overseas. These fans in Iraq and elsewhere deserve to hear the sounds of home, and these two go above and beyond to show how much they care. As the parents of a military man who has been to Iraq, we vote for them.

  68. Kim Drake on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:08 am #

I gotta agree with Nicole on this one – Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were the first people I thought of. Married forever, devoted to each other, and all that time and effort and money for the Hole in the Wall Gang charity? What more could you ask for? My second thought was George Clooney. His charitable work is amazing and as far as his personal life is concerned, he makes no apologies for being happily single and loving it. Gotta love a guy that’s honest!

  69. Sabrina Jeffries on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:47 am #

Denise, I do love Antonio Banderas, although I don’t know much about his personal life (other than that he’s married to Melanie Griffith).

Brenda, you’re right about Sarah Jessica Parker. She’s another one who doesn’t end up in the tabloids. She also seems very grounded, her and her husband Matthew Broderick.

Shawa, definitely Jodi Foster. I have always admired her professionalism. Audrey and Mary Tyler are two really classy women as well. It’s beginning to look like there are far more of these than any of us guess.

Tracy, what a sweet story about McConaughey!

Terry, I don’t see how it’s possible NOT to let a celeb’s personal life affect how you enjoy their work. When you know that someone is a total wretch as a human being, you don’t really want to watch them on the screen. I don’t expect them to be saints, mind you, but I want to know that they treat people decently.

  70. Sabrina Jeffries on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:55 am #

Annette, maybe we should start a magazine! But alas, as Gladys says, it’s the ones who behave badly who get the most publicity, and probably the magazines that feature it that get the most sales.

Lorraine, I don’t know much about Travolta and Preston, I confess.

Ranurgis, I LOVE Denzel Washington! He just seems like a real stand-up guy, but as you say, I never hear much about his personal life.

Julia S., I didn’t know that about John Schneider. It’s good to hear of all these celebrities supporting charities.

Debra, there do seem to be a lot of classy ladies out there. I wish the crazy female celebs would take a page from their book.

Susan, I know nothing about Shania Twain’s personal life, but I’ll take your word for it!

Amy, I love Keanu Reeves, so that’s good to hear.

Kristen, oh yes, Matt Damon. I saw a Biography on him, and he came across as very professional and very genuine.

  71. Sabrina Jeffries on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:57 am #

Cheryl, I completely forgot about Oprah! Of course she should be included.

Nancy, I didn’t know that about Toby Keith and Kelly Pickler. How cool!

Kim, I think Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the front runners, judging from all the comments!

  72. Suzie Sims on 09 Feb 2010 at 11:41 am #

    Hi Sabrina,
I just want to say I love everything you have written and I’m a true fan. I pre-order everything ahead of timie just to be sure I get the book asap! I just want you to know that you help me be able to relax once in awhile and I so appreciate you and your talents.

My favorite celebrities are Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, John Travolta and Oprah. I feel these celebrities have not sold their souls for money and prestige and have represented celebrities in great style. I appreciate all of the charitable work all of these celebrities have participated in.

  73. Melissa Sargent on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:03 pm #

    Hi Sabrina,

There are several that come to mind, generally though I try (very hard!) not to pass judgement on people I don’t know personally. Rumors are nasty things!
I vote for Jim Carrey, even though I have never met him. He is a talented actor and has had a successful job at portraying a range of charactors. We know he’s a comedic genius, but the first time I saw him in a serious drama, I was very impressed!
He had a rocky start in life, but has carved out a good one. He has a beautiful family and from what I’ve read, family is most important to him. As it should be!

  74. Anne Travis on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:12 pm #

Alyssa Milano has been one of my favorite celebrities every since she was a young girl on tv. Her character on Charmed stands out above the rest along with her acting ability. She is definitely a pro not just with her public self but her private self as well. Alyssa doesn’t get the bad press because she doesn’t flaunt herself.

  75. April Larabee on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:27 pm #

I agree with JudyF about George Clooney, and I also agree with Melissa Sargent about Jim Carrey. It appears one of the reasons Jenny fell in love with him was his connection to her autistic son.

  76. PhyllisC on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:30 pm #

All of the celebrities that came to mind have been mentioned – Paul Newman, Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks (I saw a great show about him the other day on tv) he really seems to be an all around nice guy.

  77. Meredith Peters on 09 Feb 2010 at 1:45 pm #

I’m really glad to hear that all the rumours about Brangelina are HOOEY!

  78. Sharon F. on 09 Feb 2010 at 3:16 pm #

I have read several of the posts here, and must say I agree with most. However, noone has mentioned Michael Bolton. I think he’s an excellent singer and an all-around nice guy. Also, I love Rachael Ray, she’s just so darn cute and down-to-earth! Michael J. Fox has long been a fave of mine (since “Family Ties”), I really admire his outlook on life, just make him all the more sexy to me! I hope everyone has a very nice, and hopefully romantic Valentine’s Day!!

  79. Sharon F. on 09 Feb 2010 at 3:21 pm #

Oops!!! A P.S. to my previous post… to all the Goddesses here on this blog, THANK YOU from the bottom of this romantic, mushy, heart, for providing me and millions of others with such wonderful, exciting reads all these years! I honestly don’t know what I’d do without my books, so again, many heartfelt thanks to all of you for all you do! Hugs and kisses and wishes that ya’ll (I’m southern-LOL) have a special Valentine’s Day!!!

  80. Pam Denham on 09 Feb 2010 at 9:29 pm #

The celebrity that comes to mind is Donny Osmond. He was my childhood crush and has just become better looking with age. Despite growing up in front of the camera at such a tender age, he has always had his feet on the ground. He married at a young age and is still married to the same one. Donny is always a gentleman, wonderful father, and faithful in his beliefs. He is one of the few that never had a problem with drugs or alcohol and is there for his friends without judgement.

  81. Stacey on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:21 pm #

As I read through the entries the couple who came to my mind that I have respected for their work and family are Jada and Will Smith…. They are both very talented and support many family oriented charities.
I must say that all the celebs spoken about don’t get enough recognition for the good things they do—Sad that our society focuses on the bad not the good….

  82. Beth Warren on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:57 pm #

I like Sandra Bullock, Alyssa Milano (love her in Charmed!). George Clooney does a lot of charity work, so does Angeline Jolie. I think Paul Newman was amazing. So is Elton John, all his pediatric AIDS work. The thing is, if they do it behind the scenes, we often don’t know about it (at least in terms of charity, not class/behaving well). It’s disappointing to see young celebs behaving so badly, like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

I don’t think celeb’s behavior or charity work influences me in terms of donations but it may influence my opinion of their appeal and my likelihood to keep watching their work.

  83. Miranda Wood on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:58 pm #

I really don’t follow any cleb stuff. But I know a few people in my life that deserve my admiration.

  84. Beth Warren on 09 Feb 2010 at 11:03 pm #

Oh, for the person who asked, Emma Watson plays “Hermione” in the Harry Potter movies. She goes to Brown, and is reportedly very low key. I think she’s awesome, it’s great she’s pursuing a degree. I think Drew Barrymore is awesome too. What about Natalie Portman, she seems very well-behaved too. Oh, and Taylor Swift – she may get mentioned in gossip magazines but seems very down to earth and sweet.

  85. Paula on 09 Feb 2010 at 11:47 pm #

One of my favorite celebs is Mark Harmon. He and Pam Dauber have been married forever. You never hear anything bad about him. I subscribe to “pretty is as pretty does” and he sure does! I agree about Pierce Brosnan and Maryl Streep. Others are Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Ozzie Smith and Ruby Dee, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Ashley Judd, Jeff Bridges, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Jerry Stiller and Ann Meara, Michael J Fox and Tracey, Will Smith and his wife Jada. I really admire couples who can be in the limelight and still be decent, still-married-to-the-same-person folks.

  86. joleen l on 10 Feb 2010 at 1:21 am #

Sophia Loren had/has a excellent marriage…. & philosophy on marriage. Keep each partner sexually satisfied & there is not need to stray. I loved the few interviews I saw on her (when Grumpier old men was released) & she struck me as an very forth-right lady.

    P.S. I LOVE GODDESS SUZY Q!!!!!!!!!

  87. betejaid on 10 Feb 2010 at 3:16 am #

WOW Andy Whitfield is gorgeous! Nearly as hunky as Johnny Depp. He just seems like an all round good egg!

  88. Gigi on 10 Feb 2010 at 5:34 am #

Liam Neeson is a wonderful actor who adored his wife.
Johnny Depp is just great as an actor and a person.
Amy Adams sees to have it all together.
I agree with you the Meryl Streep just about seems perfect.

  89. Sabrina Jeffries on 10 Feb 2010 at 7:49 am #

Suzie, thanks so much for the kind words! I’m so glad you enjoy the books. And what great choices for celebrities! We should make a list.

Melissa and April, anyone who gets involved in a relationship that involves an autistic child is a good person, in my book. I may not agree with Jenny McCarthy’s stance on vaccines (I have an autistic son, too), but I know that raising one is a struggle, and good for him to take that on.

Anne, that’s where I fell in love with Alyssa–on Charmed. Love that series!

Phyllis, Tom Hanks always comes across as so professional in interviews, etc.

    Meredith, what rumors? *G*

Sharon F., we’re happy to provide you with books! If we didn’t write, we’d probably all wither away, so it’s a great symbiotic relationship!

  90. Sabrina Jeffries on 10 Feb 2010 at 8:00 am #

Pam, I can’t believe I forgot Donny! He’s one of my favorite celebs–he’s so grounded and has such a great sense of humor. And he works really hard.

Stacey, I totally agree on Will Smith and Jada Pinkett. I’ve been a fan of both of them for ages, and they really seem to have a solid marriage where their kids come first.

Beth, I didn’t even think about Elton John! And I love his music, too! Thanks for mentioning him. Oh, and thanks for the heads up about Emma Watson. Can you tell that I never saw any of the Harry Potter movies? Oh, and yes, I’ve been following Taylor Swift a little–I think she’s so adorable, and I loved the song, “Love Story.” Gee, I wonder why. *G*

Miranda, we’ve written some blogs here about heroes in our lives, so feel free to share! *G*

Paula, you mentioned some great ones. I love Mark Harmon–I’ve been watching him for YEARS!

joleen, we love SuzyQ, too! And yes, Sophia Loren seems to be a kick.

    betejaid, isn’t he, though? :-)

  91. Sabrina Jeffries on 10 Feb 2010 at 8:01 am #

Gigi, I’m a huge fan of Liam Neeson! Glad to hear that he’s a nice guy.

  92. Michelle on 10 Feb 2010 at 8:01 am #

I have been a fan of Marie Osmond, I guess because we’re the same age and she seems to have gone through her own problems and come out a winner.

  93. Annette T. on 10 Feb 2010 at 12:22 pm #

I have been a fan of Sandra Bullock, Alyssa Milano , and Adrian Paul for years. I can always get into the characters they play because they make them so believable! This is because one never hears about their private lives! How refreshing!

  94. Biki on 10 Feb 2010 at 12:22 pm #

I’ve always preferred stars that keep a low profile rather than flaunting their lives out to the rest of the world. I like it that there are some who will try to put their own spin on roles they take it and not just go with what will make them the most money.

  95. Diane McMahon on 10 Feb 2010 at 1:19 pm #

I thought that Brad Pitt was a great example of giving back when he was in New Orleans to continue to keep America aware of the fact that the rebuilding is not completed and that more needs to be done. Unfortunately, we as American’s rush into the problem areas after the tragic event and then forget about them once a new problem arises.

  96. Jane K on 10 Feb 2010 at 3:41 pm #

George Clooney, aside from being handsome, he seems like a genuinely nice guy. From what I’ve read, he’s nice to everyone and a lot of fun too.

  97. Theresa Shafer on 11 Feb 2010 at 5:54 am #

The news is rarely about the good and great.
I was (Paul has passed on) and am (still buy and believe his family will carry on supporting good causes) impressed with the Newman line of foods, his charity work and support,

I know i turn away from the BAD celebrities, not see shows or support their sport.

Sports WERE support to teach you how to be a good sport and NOT to be a bad sport. Think about why we call someone either of these phrases. It is a game not life or death. A game is to teach how to be sportsman-like.

A great role model is football raising shining star (forgive spelling) T-Bow.

  98. Sarah on 11 Feb 2010 at 7:43 am #

I love Pierce Brosnan and Alyssa Milano too! I agree about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, they seem to have a great marriage! Another great marriage is Tim McGraw and Faith Hill!!

Some women I like are Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Ellen Degeneres, and Oprah!

I think the things that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have done are great and they do a lot of good, but I can’t ever forget what they both did to Jennifer Aniston. Am I the only one that still thinks of this?

  99. Erica on 11 Feb 2010 at 10:40 am #

I completely agree about Pierce! I have been in love with him since Remington Steele too and it has not lessened over the years. He seems like the total package!

I think Jon Bon Jovi is another one that does a lot of good and is an all around good person.

  100. Sabrina Jeffries on 11 Feb 2010 at 12:40 pm #

Michelle, Marie is definitely a winner. Used to love the Donnie and Marie show!

Annette, I LOVE Adrian Paul! I was a huge fan of the Highlander series. And you’re right–he keeps a low profile.

    Biki, I totally agree.

Dianne, yes, Brad’s work in New Orleans has been stellar. But I do agree with Sarah–it still bothers me how they treated Jennifer Aniston.

Jane K, lots of votes for Clooney!

Theresa, I’m with you on the sports thing. It’s a GAME. Don’t behave like spoiled children, guys!

Erica, I don’t know much about Bon Jovi, but he seems like a good guy.

  101. Tammy Kennedy on 11 Feb 2010 at 10:05 pm #

Thank you for posting pictures of some awesome looking men, it made me smile and think there is some life left in this old body of mine to think they were good looking

  102. Cathi O on 13 Feb 2010 at 9:28 am #

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Reeve are both fantastic, considering the odds that have faced.

Derek Jeter manages to keep his image clean and not succumb to the antics of his friend, AROD.

  103. Ann on 13 Feb 2010 at 1:36 pm #

I’m just hapy to see a response site with reasonable thoughts. I especially like a section on the good celebrities accomplish instead of the “tabloid” gossip approach. Among the “older” generation of stars I think Paul Newman and Robert Redford accomplished a great deal with the business enteprises they created that then continue to provide money for charitites even beyond their own donations or deaths!

  104. Raven375 on 13 Feb 2010 at 3:24 pm #

I love Alyssa Milano as well I miss seeing her in a series. Sanda Bullock is a great actress, she is also a nice person trying to support her hubby in getting custody of his children. I really love Jennifer Aniston and really miss the show Friends and would love to see a remake of this show.

  105. Sabrina Jeffries on 13 Feb 2010 at 7:31 pm #

Tammy, yep, those are some good-looking guys, aren’t they?

Cathi O, good to know about Derek Jeter! I don’t keep up with the sports guys as much.

Ann, yes, I think the wonderful thing about Newman and Redford is their charity work, as well as their good lives.

Raven, I want them to bring back Friends! I loved that show.
