Oscar Nominations

avatarAs most of you know by now, I’m a big movie buff. That doesn’t mean I see every movie, however. Frequently and for some very odd reason the ones I haven’t seen are the ones that get the Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Some of them seem so pretentious – and don’t get me started about No Country for Old Men, the Emperor’s New Clothes of movies. Everybody said it was magnificent because nobody could be the first to admit that they didn’t get it. Well, I didn’t get it. Because it was STUPID.

Anyway, the nominations this year were expanded to ten movies. district-9-trailerOf those ten, I’ve seen four, own another one (my mom wanted to see it, so I let her borrow it), and want to see an additional two. This is very rare for me. Last year I’d seen NONE of the nominated movies. I still haven’t seen any of them, in fact, though I own Frost/Nixon (which didn’t win).

So this year’s nominees are:
Avatar – awesome looking and sounding. Plot…well, it looks awesome.
The Blind Side – want to go
inglourious-basterds-1District 9 – fascinating character study, and unfortunately probably what would really happen if an alien ship ran out of gas over a major city
An Education – eww, don’t want to see it despite Colin Firth (added later: oops. Colin Firth is in A Single Man, not this one. An Education still gets an ewww vote, though.)
The Hurt Locker – Mom, I need my movie back so I can see it
Inglourious Basterds – violent, clever, and equal parts funny and horrifying
Precious – too depressing for me to go see
A Serious Man – It hasn’t been long enough for me to forgive the Coen brothers for that other movie
Up
– sad and funny and uplifting and just amazing
Up in the Air – I’ll get there, George Clooney! Just give me time to finish my revisions!

I have no idea which movie will win. Of the ones I’ve seen, my Oscar vote goes to Inglourious Basterds. Or Up. upProbably.

How many of the nominated movies have you seen? Which movie gets your vote? Is there a movie that should have been nominated that wasn’t? Oh, and in honor of The Goddess Blogs anniversary next week, I’m giving away an advanced reader copy of my May 11th book, A Lady’s Guide to Improper Behavior, to a lucky poster!
Congratulations to LauraR! My nephew drew her name for the ARC!

The only movie I saw was “The Blind Side”.
I have no interest in seeing the others.

  2. Megsanne on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:05 am #

I totally agree about Avatar. Looked great, unoriginal plot. I have The Hurt Locker and District 9 on my MUST SEE lists. Friends say Precious was fantastic, so I might make the effort to see it, but I have no interest in A Serious Man. Interested to see what happens with the ten nominations.

    Happy movie watching!!

  3. Kimberly on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:29 am #

I must say that Avatar is my top vote. I have seen it 3 times now and i absolutely loved it. Very good and unexpectedly sad. Up was also a movie i was not expecting to be sad but very cute. Up would have to go in as my second vote. I agree about District 9, good movie but we probably would do that to them, :( Those are the only three movies i have seen and unfortunately none of the others have really seemed to catch my attention. I must say i do hope that Avatar wins. :)

  4. evlqn on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:41 am #

Want to see Blind Side and Avatar maybe District 9 and Up. Have not seen any of the nominated movies. No interest in Inglorious Basterds or any of the others. It has been so long since I have had a free weekend that I don’t even remember what it is like.

  5. Suzanne Enoch on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:48 am #

Kimberly, I agree that for pure spectacle, Avatar blows everything else this year away. And there were a few times during the flying sequences that I was actually breathless and grinning.

It’s going to be an interesting race – that’s for certain.

  6. B on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:10 am #

I’ve only seen Avatar. It was a good, cute, movie. Great visual effects. I’ll disagree with Kimberly, though, on the sad part. Everyone who knows me was surprised because I didn’t cry in Avatar. Yes, there were parts that were supposedly sad. But it just didn’t get to me. In fact, I spent most of the movie trying to catch the white thingies that kept coming off the screen.

I have faith in the Oscars, though. I believe best plot shall win, despite the media interest (though, since I haven’t really seen the movies, I don’t know the best plot — but they must). This faith just overwhelmed me in 2006, when, after all the media frenzy, Crash won over Brokeback Mountain. From then on, I believe in the Oscars.

    I know, I’m weird.

  7. Archer on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:18 am #

The only movies I’ve seen this year are Harry Potter and New Moon :)

  8. Bronte on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:22 am #

I have seen: Avatar, District 9, inglorious basterds and the hurt locker. I will see the blind side, UP and Up in the air at some point. For pure spectacle Avatar was beautiful however the acting was a bit dodgy in places and the script was really padestrian and in your face preachy. I really liked the Hurt locker and District 9. District 9 was unsettling, challenging and allegorical without being in your face. I would love it if District 9 won. I don’t think it will though so I will settle for the Hurt locker

Probably my favourite movies this year have been The Young Victoria, District 9 and for laughs, The Hangover.

  9. Jane on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:42 am #

I really liked “Inglorious Basterds.” I though “The Hangover” and “Star Trek” were snubbed for Best Picture. They were huge hits and good movies.

  10. Angela on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:14 am #

I haven’t seen any of the movies and I don’t want to.
I think the Oscars are rigged, just like all the other award shows.
    So, I really don’t care.
Sorry, Just got up and haven’t had anything to eat yet.

  11. Fran on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:19 am #

I have seen Avatar and Inglourious Basterds. Liked Avatar but Basterds were too much for me :(
I would like to see Up but didn’t have time so far

  12. moon_princess111 on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:53 am #

I haven’t seen any of the movies which have been chosen, although I WILL see BLIND SIDE and UP IN THE AIR (huge George CLooney fan here), PRECIOUS is one I’ll watch some cold night when I’m home alone and can cry all I want without witnesses, INGLORIUOS BASTARDS is one I’d love to see in a theater, sorry but I have no desire to see AVATAR….it just doesn’t intrest me. The others I’ve never even heard of, but did I see Colin FIrth’s name mentioned with one of them? I’ll probably see it at some point since I’ve seen EVERY movie he’s ever been in, but hey who could pass up Mr Darcy?

  13. Carol L. on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:56 am #

I have seen Inglourious Basterds, Up In The Air , An Education and Precious.
Inglourious Basterds gets my vote. A movie that should have been nominated but wasn’t is 500 Days of Summer.

I have seen two of the nominated movies. I loved Avatar and found District 9 to be both strange and quite interesting. As a sci-fi nut I am actually quite picky about what I watch but I did enjoy it. The almost documentry style was easy to focus on and the action scenes kept my attention.

  15. Kirsten on 04 Feb 2010 at 4:32 am #

I have only seen Up in the air and I must confess it was because of George being in it. I love George “Gorgeous” Clooney! He gets my vote for sure.
The others just didn’t speak to me. As for Avatar, well I saw the trailer and the blue people (are they people?) put me off.

  16. Laurie G on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:07 am #

I loved Blind Side so touching! Sandra Bullock was excellent!! I haven’t seen any of the others. Although I probably will eventually see Up and Avatar.

  17. LoriHandeland on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:25 am #

Suzie! I’m glad to hear you say that about No Country. IV and I went with another couple to see it in the theater and when it was done the other guy announced: Are you kidding me? I agreed. Every time I see that on cable I groan and shut it off.

I’m usually the one who’s only seen 1 of the nominated movies, although with 10 instead of 5 this year that might be why I’ve seen more. I’ve seen Avatar, District 9, Ingluorius Basterds and Up. I liked Basterds a lot. I thought the villain was CREEPY.

  18. cail on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:51 am #

i loved avatar. on failblog, someone did an ‘avatar plot fail’ where someone edited letters and words in the pocahantas movie plot description and turned it into a avatar plot description. Avatar is just awesome though.

The DH and I just watched up, and both of us were in tears after the first ten minutes. it’s not fair to do that to a person!!!

And I’m with you Suzanne, No Country sucked majorly. i hated it and told everyone that.

  19. Karen Rose on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:54 am #

Suzie – I do love your POV! I shake my head at the Emperor’s New Clothes movies for the same reason. I’m smart. I have reasonably good taste. And I don’t get a lot of those movies either. Because they’re STUPID. So here, here to Suzie for callin’ it straight!

I’ve seen UP. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen in years. Beautiful visually, Pixar tells a story that made me weep and smile and laugh and — SQUIRREL! Million thumbs up from me on UP.

I want to see Avatar in the theater just for the spectacle and I want to see Blind Side, but will wait for the DVD.

I don’t go to many movies in the theater as they’re not captioned – especially ones that are mainly dialog. In the theater I spend all my time leaning over to my daughter and saying, “What did they say?” and probably making the people behind me want to smack me. So I wait for the DVD, saving the people behind me from the irritation.

  20. Freedom Writer on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:23 am #

I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies. As a matter of fact I think Mamma Mia is the last movie I saw in the theater. Even when movies are out that I want to see I either don’t have the time or the money to go see them. My granddaughter has UP on DVD, but I haven’t watch it.

I know I’m pitiful especially since we have a multiplex just down the road and my daughters can get discounted tickets to most movies through their jobs.

  21. Freshechelle on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:34 am #

Saw Up in the Air, had to, I’m a frequent flyer, I can relate. It was very good but HEA.

Want to see District 9, An Education, Up & IB. Want to see Tom Ford & Colin Firth’s A Single Man, no interest in the Cohen Bros A Serious Man.

I’m surprised at the success of Abatawar (sic) – the coming attractions made it look well, not so good, light on plot, heavy on CGI. Never saw Titantic either so guess I’m not the James Cameron blockbuster demographic.

Suzanne, now please visual my outstretched grubby mit in the style of Stephen Colbert as I say “ARC please” despite my dis of a sci fi flick.

  22. Sabrina Jeffries on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:53 am #

Okay, this is just sad, but I’ve only seen one, and oddly it’s one you haven’t seen–An Education. I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I thought it was an excellent movie (but Colin Firth wasn’t in it, so I don’t know where you got that from–are you confusing it with another movie?).

I want to see several of the others, but haven’t gotten to them. Mostly I saw romantic comedies this year, and they never seem to get nominated for Oscars (Love Happens, The Proposal, The Ugly Truth). Same with kid’s movies (A Christmas Carol) and women’s films (Julie and Julia, My Life in Ruins), with Up being a notable exception.

You know that Hollywood is run by men when a movie with all flash and no substance (or so I’ve heard) like Avatar always lands on the Oscar list, but really good romantic comedies do not. Not that I saw any stellar romantic comedies this year–I didn’t–but they almost never make it onto the Oscar lists.

  23. SuzyQ on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:54 am #

The only movie I’ve seen is UP, and not even all the way through. I got it for my kids through NetFlix and have caught most of it. My movies I saw were not in the 10 nominated – Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, The Chipmunks (yeah, well I have kids so I see more of their movies than mine).

  24. Sabrina Jeffries on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:55 am #

I usually end up having seen at least one, largely because my brother the videographer, who only watches “films,” drags me to one. He and his wife and my other brother dragged me to No Country for Old Men. I liked it … until the end. I hate it when the Coen Brothers decide to go with the dark/bleak/inexplicable/meaning-filled ending. I keep saying I’m going to watch it again, so I can decide if I hated it or not. But somehow I never have the time. *G* And I love the Coen Brothers movies generally.

  25. Freshechelle on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:56 am #

Sabrina, re: you last remark about rom-coms: a review of Leap Year described it as a romantic comedy that was neither. Ha! Sad state of affairs in Hollywood for that genre.

  26. nancyg on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:00 am #

So far, I’ve seen Inglorious Basterds & Up. Up was cute, had a good message, & the kids loved it…even the teenagers!
Basterds? preface – LOVE Tarantino. Not a huge fan of the movie – it was too all over the place for me…and kinda shmaltzy. Mr. G didn’t like it either.

Hurt Locker is next on my Netflix queue… and everyone that’s seen District 9 says the Blu-Ray will blow you away, so that’s probably next week.

Teens saw Blind Side without me, so I’ll be headed to the movies solo… I’ve been wanting to see it for MONTHS!

Heard A Single Man was fantastic – Colin Firth? Have to go to the artsy fartsy theater to see that one.

Still thinking about Avatar, and Precious – probably too depressing.

Up in the Air – been off the George Clooney bandwagon for awhile now, but I did love Micheal Clayton & Syriana. Can anyone who’s seen it give a review – thumbs up or down without plot spoilers? I’m still on the fence…

  27. ladydawgfan on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:00 am #

I only wanted to see one of them (The Blind Side), but haven’t seen it yet. Some of them I haven’t even heard of (The Hurt Locker??)! However, I was glad to see that Meryl Streep was nominated for Julie and Julia, a wonderful movie that I own and love. Hope she wins!!

  28. Stacy Stewart on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:09 am #

I’ve seen Inglorious Bastards which I rather enjoyed. I did think that Pitt’s acting was a little copied from Clooney’s in O Brother Where Art Thou, but maybe I’m the only one who saw that connection.

I’ve seen up which took me on a roller coaster ride of emotion and of course the kids loved it.

I’ve seen District 9, which was surprisingly also a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Now, I want to see The Blindside, Avatar and Up in the Air.

I’m surprised that Where the Wild Things Are did not get nominated. I have to admit I did not love the film and it was truly a complex story for a child’s book. However, when Max started to sail away from the land of the wild things, my seven year son started to cry. He had huge tears rolling down his eyes. My five year old who was sitting on the other side of me, said, “Mommy I feel like crying.” When we were walking through the parking lot my son grabbed me around the waist and hugged me and then clung to me the rest of the day.
My husband said, “I don’t get it, but our kids did.”

  29. Lisa H on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:10 am #

As the mom of a four-year-old, the only Oscar nom I saw was UP and I thought it was wonderful. I also loved Jim Carrey’s “A Christmas Carol”. I thought he was incredible and really enjoyed the special effects. I really want to see Avatar and tomorrow night my teenage daughter and I are going to see “Dear John”.

My favorite movie of the year would have to be “New Moon” although serious movie critics would probably laugh at my choice. I love the romance between Edward and Bella.

  30. kay on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:31 am #

I saw Avatar, Up and District 9. Avatar had wonderful special effects, however, I found some really cheesy parts in it and I wish that James Cameron could write a good screenplay. They were the kind of cheesy parts that I become embarrassed about. I thought the same thing about Titanic, horrible acting, horrible screenplay, great special effects. District 9 made me sick to my stomach with all of the camera motions. I loved Up, but animation doesn’t win Oscars. I suspect that either Avatar or Hurt Locker is going to win, although Up in the Air might be a surprise win.

  31. PJ on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:36 am #

The only one I’ve seen is “The Blind Side”. Sandra Bullock deserves all of the awards and nominations she’s been receiving for this role. She was amazing! We went to see this movie as a family, ranging in age from 11 to 58 (male and female) and we *all* fell in love with it. That’s pretty amazing! :)

  32. Rachel Gibson on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:05 am #

The only one I’ve seen is Inglorious Bastards. Loved it. Will rent some of the others. Probably not the Clooney movie, though. Sorry guys, but I don’t get every one’s love of Clooney.

  33. Madeline Hunter on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:24 am #

I haven’t seen any of them yet. sniff. I have no life, LOL. I mean, really, how ridiculous is this? None of them. I’m telling DH to take me on a date and get me out of this winter hibernation. One problem is that everyone raved about Avatar in 3 D so of course I want to see it that way and the only 3D theater is on the other side of the city.

  34. Pesky on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:25 am #

I saw The Blind Side and Avatar. I’d recommend both of them.

I find Oscar nominations along the same line as “classic” literature. I’ll see them when forced to, some I may enjoy, the bulk of them are self serving pieces of shlock written to fulfil an agenda. The the main characters lead miserable, horrible lives up till the last 10 minutes of the movie, where they escape from their miserable, horrible lives through either life affirming moment or death…it’s going to be a “classic”. Everyone dies in the end? Oscar! Hollywood self-aggrandizing? Oscar! Main character triumphs over all their insurmountable woes and walks off into an uncertain future? Oscar!

I’m always suprised when a mainstream movie makes the cut, it renews my faith in humanity.

Bitter, party of one signing off….

  35. jcp on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:35 am #

    I saw The Blind Side.

  36. Louisa Cornell on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:36 am #

Haven’t seen any of them actually which tells you how much time I am spending on revisions! But, I’m a huge movie buff. My niece and nephews love to come to my house because I have an entire room of videos and DVD’s – floor to ceiling shelves, all in alphabetical order. My nephew dog-sat for me when I went to Nationals last year. He said he spent the entire time in front of the tv!

Have District 9 and Inglorious Bastards on DVD, but haven’t watched them yet. Probably will this weekend.

My Mom and the grandkids have seen UP, Avatar and The Blind Side. They loved UP and The Blind Side. They were split on Avatar. I’ve heard all about the amazing special effects, but few people rave about the story or the acting. That tells me something.

I don’t understand why the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises are always overlooked in the Oscars.

And Suzanne I agree with you completely on No Country For Old Men and several of these other “why you just have to see it” movies. I don’t like to spend my money and my time on something that at the end I think “What the heck?” or worse “What a colossal waste of two hours.”

Not crazy about sad, depressing movies either. For that I watch the news!

  37. LauraR on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:41 am #

Haven’t seen any of them. I’m too busy reading! And years ago I rented ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ on a critic’s review and the fact that it won the Oscar yet I could not watch more than 20 minutes of it. The people in it were cruel and the situation felt hopeless. That is not the entertainment experience I desire.
    Startrek was robbed.

  38. SheridanLA on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:45 am #

I have seen a couple of them this year.. I enjoyed Up in the Air and Up.. Avatar was such a gorgeous visual treat I enjoyed it, but I am with the consensus – plot was meh.. I had some guy on FB actually try to get me in a debate about its political meaning and how it is describing the situation with the Native Americans.. yeah, I got that – ever watched Pocahontas or Fern Gully or a host of other movies with the exact plot and message?

I want to see Blind Side, but will probably wait until the DVD comes out.

  39. Suzanne Enoch on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:46 am #

Bronte and Jane, from what I’ve heard quite a few people think “The Hangover” should have been nommed for Best Picture. I haven’t seen it, but I plan to.

  40. Suzanne Enoch on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:53 am #

Stacy, what a wonderful recommendation to take your kids to see “Where the Wild Things Are”! I missed it, but now I’ll make certain my nephew gets to see it.

  41. Suzanne Enoch on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:54 am #

Okay, I don’t know if you guys are trying to butter me up, but I’ll jump on the “Star Trek was robbed!!” bandwagon. *g*

  42. RachieG on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:03 am #

Ok, so it it just me but I HATED District 9!! And for best picture?? Ugh, it just didn’t do it for me. I am hoping “Up” will take it!

  43. ladydawgfan on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:03 am #

Star Trek was ROBBED!!!! ROBBED, I tell ya!!! It’s a TRAVESTY!!!! What is the MATTER with those blasted Oscar buttheads?? Are they BLIND???? SHEEESH!!! *G* (Enough buttering up yet, Suzanne?) ;)

  44. Louisa Cornell on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:12 am #

I have to agree with all of the Star Trek fans. Then again, I have always said that for the Oscars it is not enough to be entertaining, enlightening, adventurous and fun.

Frankly if I want to see “art” I will go to the Louvre. If I want to seek moral enlightenment I’ll read Marcus Aurelius or the Bible. When I go to the movies I want to enter another world, have an adventure, live a romance or just have fun. Do that and you win my Oscar!

  45. Linda Henderson on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:27 am #

I have not seen any of them yet. I use a walker to get around so I usually don’t go to the movies, I wait until they come out on DVD. My grandkids received UP for Christmas but they haven’t brought it over for me to see yet. They love it. My daughter has seen a few of the nominated films and hasn’t been all that impressed with them. I do watch the award shows though, I like to see what everyone is wearing.

  46. SheridanLA on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:41 am #

The Hangover was much funnier then I thought it was going to be.. not sure it is worth a best picture nod, but worth checking out.

  47. Lyoness2009 on 04 Feb 2010 at 10:52 am #

“Blind Side” or “Up” should win…although my fav is “Up!”

  48. Janae on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:01 am #

I have to admit that I haven’t seen a single one of the Best pictures noms. I’ve seen a bunch of other movies this year, though. I’ll probably still try to catch Avatar in 3D at the Imax, but I’m not a huge James Cameron fan and think Titanic is the most over-rated movie in film history. From what I’ve heard from friends, maybe Avatar is going to take its place. Just because a movie’s an epic doesn’t mean it’s good. I hope the Academy remembers that this year; or they at least remember Cameron’s horrid acceptance speech for Titanic.

I can say already that Up won’t win the Best Picture nom, but it will win Best Animated Picture. That’s why they created the Best Animated Feature Oscar. It might lose votes since it was nominated in both Best Picture categories.

Though, we’re not talking about any of the other Oscar noms, I have to say that Roberty Downey Jr was robbed. He should have been nominated for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

  49. Freshechelle on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:03 am #

Pesky, Amen to your rant about the Oscars which matches my rant about the Grammys. Lots of sales doesn’t equal talent or quality. If Grammys went to the “best” in their categories, it’d be a night of winners the general public never heard of.

  50. Julia London on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:14 am #

I have seen Up one million sixty two times. And I love it every time. Me and the CPE look for balloons coming out of chimneys now because he really believes houses can fly. Ah, to be 3 again!

I haven’t seen the other best picture movies. I have seen Crazy Heart (while Jeff Bridges was amazing, and Maggie G. pretty good, the affair between those two was too hard to believe. Why would any young, beautiful woman hook up with an old, broken down alcoholic — immediately? Jack London and I couldn’t get past that. If the Maggie G. part had been played by someone a little older, like maybe Ashley Judd, then maybe, but…no).

I am going to see A Single Man on Monday with a friend because I luuuuuurv Colin Firth.

I read Precious, and I don’t want to see it, altho I feel like I am missing out on something.

Have no interest in Avatar. Would like to see District 9. And Up in the Air. Hurt Locker, maybe. Blind Side, definitely.

  51. Kathy on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:19 am #

I’ve seen Avatar, The Blind Side, Inglorious Basterds, Up, Up in the Air, and District 9.

Of those, it would be nice to see the Blind Side win. but we all know it will got to Avatar. a visually stunning film that is really low on fleshing out it’s characters. Making the “natives” living the “tree= life” and the money guys ALL about the money.
some nuances would have been nice mr James Cameron!

  52. Kathy on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:21 am #

and add me to the “Star Trek was robbed ” camp!!!!
I’ve watched it at least 7 times now and it gets better each time.

  53. Gwynlyn MacKenzie on 04 Feb 2010 at 11:34 am #

I’ve seen UP because I bought the DVD. Very cute. Dying to see Blind Side, but will, again, wait for the DVD. As for the rest, not really interested—I need more “on my butt” time like I need another five pounds. And I agree; Star Trek was robbed!

  54. Amy on 04 Feb 2010 at 12:04 pm #

I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies, but I am sure I will eventually. Every year I subject myself to the Oscars, and I don’t know why, it always puts me in a bad mood. The people that deserve to win never do, the fact that it took Kate Winslet something like 5 nominations before she actually won is ridiculous. I think the Acadamy holds a grudge against some directors and actors, and they are snubbed because of this i.e. Leonardo Decaprio, not a huge fan, but I feel he has been black listed by the Acadamy. I haven’t seen Avatar, but do other movies stand a chance against it? I think they need to have a best picture comedy category and a best picture drama category because comedy never wins against the drama. I could rant forever about the Oscars and how unfair I think they are, but once again I will tune in. Movies I would have liked to see nominated were The Hangover and The Young Victoira.

The only one I’ve seen was Avatar. Liked it a lot but don’t think it should win for anything other than amazing special effects. The story was very similar to Battle for Terra and I’m sure other movies as well.

SuzeE, you must watch Frost/Nixon. It was excellent. I was reluctant to watch it but it was very very good and fascinating.

  56. colinfirthfan on 04 Feb 2010 at 12:12 pm #

I’ve seen UP as well. Forgot about it!! It was cute. I was expecting worse. *grin*

  57. GSM on 04 Feb 2010 at 12:48 pm #

I’ve seen only two of these–Avatar and The Blind Side. Avatar was fun and visually stunning. Period. The love story is predictable, though sweet, and the anti-business/anti-military message is unsultingly simplistic. I don’t think this movie is a creative as Cameron’s original Terminator films. Who knew blue people would be so popular in a movie? The Blind Side is is a fun, mostly autobiographical rags-to-riches story. Bullock is charming. The movie is absolutely unobjectionable for the whole family, so I can’t possibly see how it could win the Best Picture Oscar! I agree with Kathy’s post an hour ago–Star Trek should have made this 10-picture list.

  58. Kayte Vayne on 04 Feb 2010 at 12:59 pm #

I LOVED District 9!! If you haven’t seen it, you really need to! It’s gory, but it’s an amazingly done movie with a surprisingly poignant lovestory woven into it. I thought Inglorious Bastards was ok, the villain was amazing but I just can’t stand Brad Pitt as an actor. Up was fantastic!! It makes me laugh every time I see it, “Snipe….” The Hurt Locker just arrived via Netflix so we’ll see how that is, and I also couldn’t bring myself to see Precious. Wayyyyy too depressing.

As for Avatar, I thought the animation was amazazing but did anyone else notice how the plot was basically Disney’s Pocahantas with the names changed?? I mean they even had a Mother Willow tree!! I think I’m also just sick to death of the “greedy, evil Americans” theme that seems to be in every sci fi or fantasy flick now. The other thing that really bugged me about this movie was: unobtainium. Really?!?! A rocklike element that is soo hard to OBTAIN and the best name you can come up with is Unobtainium?? Bleh.

  59. jackie on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:04 pm #

Not seen a single one, but I do want to go see Avatar. I do not usually like critically acclaimed movies. I am just a simple girl – I go to the movies to be entertained and have found the majority of highly acclaimed movies are just not that entertaining. Or maybe I am just simple minded.

  60. LindaB on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:21 pm #

Unfortunately we haven’t seen any (current budget restraints), but I hope we will evenually get to see Blind Side, Up in the Air and Inglourious Basterds. I’d also like to see Jeff Bridges’ performance in Crazy Heart–he’s a favorite of mine. Even when there aren’t any budget restraints, though, I never feel compelled to see movies because of Oscar nominations or the “must see” buzz; my decisions are based solely on what interests me. Strangely enough, while I’m curious about Avatar, my son is actively disinterested, which surprised me.

  61. Maureen on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:29 pm #

I was going to go with my son and husband to see Avatar but was sick and missed it. My son really enjoyed it and I haven’t seen the others. I always meant to watch some of the nominated movies but never get around to it.

  62. Claudia Dain on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:51 pm #

What?! I loved No Country For Old Men. Loved it! I’ll explain it to you someday, Suzie. ;)

Avatar: saw it, liked it for what it was–a visual treat. It should get something for special effects, but not for best movie.

Up: saw it three times and loved it more each time. The most romantic movie I saw all year.

In Bas: saw it, found it disturbing and interesting in equal measure. Quenton T movies have such a specific look and tone–his voice is so strong! And I like that.

No interest in seeing the others! Isn’t that sad? Just no interest. =Maybe= The Blind Side, but only if I were convinced it wouldn’t make me sad. I don’t want my entertainment choices to make me sad! Life’s sad enough all on its own.

  63. Claudia Dain on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:54 pm #

Oh, my gosh, Rachel, I’m going to kiss you. I don’t like George Clooney one tiny bit.

  64. Chelsea B. on 04 Feb 2010 at 1:59 pm #

I haven’t seen any of these movies, but I would bet almost anything that Avatar wins! And its the movie out of all the ones above I want to see the most!

  65. PJane1031 on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:00 pm #

Whew!!! At least I’m not the only one to see none of the movies nomiated!! I made it to the theater a total of ONCE last year to see “The Ugly Truth” (and while cute, probably not worth the price of admission, nor likely to have any sort of Oscar nomiations come it’s way) Some of the scenes for “A Serious Man” were actually filmed where I work, so for that reason, it probably has my vote for now. I do want to see a few of them, but without watching, I can’t say which one(s) I’d be pulling for to win.

  66. Angela on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:10 pm #

Star Trek was robbed!!!! I own it and love it. Thrill ride of action and special effects and the original Spock is in it. Sci fi doesn’t do well at Oscar time because they are actually enjoyable movies. Nuf said.

  67. Suzanne Enoch on 04 Feb 2010 at 2:55 pm #

Claudia, oh, Claudia, come to the dark side. I know what No Country was TRYING to do, but I thought they did it very badly.

I seem to like about every other Coen Bros movie, and hate the ones in between. Loved “Raising Arizona”, hated “Barton Fink”, loved “Fargo” and “O Brother”, not so much everything else right around those two.

But then I can’t stand Woody Allen movies, either.

  68. Amy on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:35 pm #

I’m with you on the Woody Allen movies!

  69. nancyg on 04 Feb 2010 at 3:45 pm #

I just picked up Star Trek from my library (I *finally* got to the top of the wait list!), so Mr. G, the girls & I will definitely sit down to watch it in the next couple of days. Not a huge fan, but from what everyone said today about it, I’ll give it a shot.

  70. Margaret on 04 Feb 2010 at 4:16 pm #

Sad to report that, not only have I not seen any of them, I’ve only heard of 2 or 3. Me who used to make sure I saw every nominated movies before the Academy Awards were broadcast.

Not only that, I don’t know 95% of the young actors these days. I only learn about them when they go into rehab.

Suzanne, your comment on “No Country for Old Men” reminds me of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. A non movie if ever there was one. It would take 15 minutes or more for a pod to leave the space ship. Jaw breakingly boring. I don’t thing anyone ever figured out what that stupid monolith meant. I have never forgiven Kubrick for the mess he made of Stephen King’s “The Shining”. Ugh

  71. Margaret on 04 Feb 2010 at 4:18 pm #

Oh thank you, Suzanne! I’ve always thought I was alone in the dark movie wasteland on loathing Woody Allen movies. I remember when he tried stand-up comedy on Ed Sullivan’s show. Funny he wasn’t.

  72. Claudia Dain on 04 Feb 2010 at 4:36 pm #

Suzie, I thought Fargo was one of the best movies of the decade.

  73. Michelle B on 04 Feb 2010 at 4:47 pm #

I’ve seen Avatar and really liked it. Nice night out with the whole family over Christmas. We all loved UP, very sweet story. The Blind Side was the best, it had everything for me. Inglorious Bastards was OK, amusing. My Oscar vote, if I had one, goes to The Blind Side!

I’ve never liked Woody Allen movies either. I fell asleep in Annie Hall, on a date, still a boring movie.

  74. Tal on 04 Feb 2010 at 5:46 pm #

I only saw one of the nominated movies also.. The Hurt Locker.. Boring..I have no idea why Jeremy Renner was nominated.. his partner the sargent at least showed some emotion.. Blind Side.. I want my 8 dollars back for the Proposal..before I pay to see Bullock again. So far the only movie I have enjoyed lately was the Hangover… very funny, (to me anyway, Im warped though)lol I have to say I also liked Australia, although I am not a kidman fan.. but I enjoyed it.. that little boy stole me heart..

  75. Tal on 04 Feb 2010 at 5:48 pm #

If any one saw the HBO series Generation Kill.. any given episode was better than the Hurt Locker.. Best Director seriously?

  76. Karen Rose on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:03 pm #

Suzie, have you ever seen the Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy? Very weird and I didn’t like it the first time I saw it, but Mr. R loves it, so I watched it again. Grew on me the second time.

Some of their movies I liked, some not. Didn’t care for Fargo, which a lot of folks loved.

  78. chelleyreads on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:12 pm #

i haven’t seen any movies in the theater for almost six now. i think $9+ is too expensive so i usually just wait for the dvd to come out so the whole family can see the movie too. i also don’t keep up with what’s in the movies or what’s up for nominations but i hope disney and pixar’s up is nominated and wins because i did see that movie and i thought it was the cutest thing (the part where his wife died had me almost crying).

  79. Lisa H on 04 Feb 2010 at 7:27 pm #

    Not a Clooney fan either.

  80. Karen W. on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:33 pm #

I usually haven’t seen any of the Oscar nominated movies or maybe 1 of them, but this year I’ve actually seen five of the ten: “Avatar,” “District 9,” “The Blind Side,” “Up,” and “Up In The Air.” I really liked them all, but I thought “District 9″ was stunning (although it doesn’t have a chance in hell!), and I LOVE “Avatar.” I’ve seen it twice and want to go again. Again, I don’t think it has a chance for best picture, though.

I’m not interested in the others because they all seem too depressing and/or violent for me. (Although “District 9″ wasn’t for the faint of heart either.)

  81. Karen W. on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:35 pm #

I’ve only gotten to see District 9, which I have mixed feelings over. I’m just unsure if I really liked it. I didn’t hate it, but I thought that it should have ended differently.

I haven’t gotten to see any other nominated movies. Ing Bastards is probably the only one I’ve thought about seeing, just worried about the really violent scenes.

There are tons I still want to see that weren’t nominated like Star Trek and Harry Potter, two of my favorites. I’ve been putting Harry Potter off because I’ve read the book. Ha-ha, broke my heart just as much as the Azkaban (#3) book did. My son saw Avatar and really liked it, though he thought he wouldn’t. I’d like to see that one too. It’s sad to say, I don’t really remember what the other movies nominated are about! I usually wait till they are on DVD but it’s fun to go to the theater as a treat with the kids!

  85. Emmanuelle on 05 Feb 2010 at 3:33 am #

I don’t go to the theatre very often. I did go and see avatar, well because I have a husband and a son who LOVE sci-fi. I wasn’t expecting to like it so much. It was the sweetest love story I’ve seen in a movie in a long time. I know some say it’s been seen 1000 times before but I> don’t care. Pocahontas worked for me and this one did too. What I can’t undertand is why this movie isn’t catheogorised Romance. Because IT IS A ROMANCE (that’s what I keep repeating DH and DS ;-) .

  86. Shu on 07 Feb 2010 at 1:55 am #

I know I’m a bit late to this discussion, but here goes: I’ve seen Up, Avatar, Inglourious Basterds, The Blind Side, and District 9. I’m actually surprised that I watched half of this year’s noms since I usually only see a grand total of one.

Even though I know it won’t win, I can’t help but root for Up. I cry easily, but that movie made me cry within the first two minutes – that’s gotta be a new record. Avatar was visually great, but I wasn’t that moved by the plot – too typical. Inglourious Basterds wasn’t as gory as I had thought, pretty entertaining, but I didn’t think it was worthy of a nod for Best Picture. The Blind Side was touching, but I was surprised that I wasn’t wowed by it. District 9 was a lot more gory than I had expected and the ending was too sudden for me!

In any case, the Oscar would probably go to one of the ones that I haven’t seen. Like some of the commentators, I don’t get all the hype about Oscar movies. I think whichever movie gives you the most miserable characters always wins. And I’m all about movies leaving me HAPPY at the end, but romantic comedies never get any recognition.

  87. Mary Ambra on 07 Feb 2010 at 3:42 am #

The Avatar is my first choice I’ve seen it three times. I absolutly live the spritiual message and our taking care of our Mother (earth). The cinematography, treesand floating mountians where awesome I watched Up with my grandchildren which was a lovely movie about connecting with different generations. District 9 was very violent but it sent a very strong message racism, aparthide hatred fear, Inglorious Bastards was a bit violent for me also. I did not get to see Blind Side, Precious or
    Up in the air

  88. Sue Harrison on 08 Feb 2010 at 2:50 pm #

Howcome all these incredible women have missed CRAZY HEART with Jeff Bridges, one of the great movies this year. Everything about it *works,* especially the romance and the music. Jeff Bridges is at the top of his game in CRAZY HEART, deserving his first Oscar to sit next to his Golden Globe. He has given us great performances for almost 40 years now (OK, so he WAS a teenager when he started in movies). Try to see it on big screen with good sound before Oscar time.

I’m in the STAR TREK Was Robbed camp with the rest of you — huge action adventure matched by huge heart-felt human drama. Doesn’t get better’n that.

  89. Susan Navidad on 08 Feb 2010 at 6:37 pm #

I saw Avatar, in 3D at the IMAX. A-stounding! Excellent cinematography. Excellent story line, and all-too-present reminder to care for Mother Earth. District 9 also gets my vote–I would call it the “sleeper” as people just haven’t seemed to realize its message. I’m not holding my breath for the sequel, but the characters have drawn me in and I would love to see them continue in a sequel…

  91. Leisha on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:02 pm #

I have only seen Avatar (which my whole family LOVED), Inglorious Basterds, which my husband and I liked (him more than I), and Up, which was cute. The others are on my list to see though!

  92. Judy Grimes on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:14 pm #

  93. qotu on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:21 pm #

I’ve only seen District 9 and Up. LOVE, LOVE, LOVED Up. Thought District 9 was OK but I really hate artsy fartsy camera work. Cloverfield could have been interesting but it gave me a headache with all the jumpy camera work and I thought it was pretentious.

  94. Latisha on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:21 pm #

I read the book Push by Sapphire which the movie Precious is based on. The book was disturbing and poignant. It touched on heavy and real subject matter, from child abuse to obesity. It’s been at least ten years since I read the book, but I still wasn’t over what I read, not enough to go see the movie. The visual would have had me crying for days, if not weeks. District 9 is actually based on apartheid in South Africa, how the natives were treated. My kids and I loved the movie Up. I was surprised how much I really liked Avatar, because the story has done so many times. I think it was probably the romantic element that got me. Inglorious Basterds took the fantasy from the brains of the people who survived Hitler and made a funny, but kick ass film.

  95. Denise Sandoval on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:37 pm #

Wow, If I have to vote I will vote for UP that movie made me cry, mad, and laugh. It is a fantastic movie. If you have not seen it and you are married you have to watch it. Is just a fantastic history.

I have seen Avatar..Star Trek…District 9…The Blind Side..and I can do bad all by myself

to me they all get a rating of +10

  97. Jackie on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:47 pm #

Much as I love movies, I hardly ever watch them anymore. Maybe because I do not have a movie buddy and I get tired of going by myself. Plus the expense. So if I could go to $5 matinees, during the week (I am retired so I can do things like that) but they do not have them Mon – Fri. Whine! LOL

I have not seen any of the current nominees and I think I did not see any from last year either. It seems like, if it gets nominated, it is not a movie I would like. I have gotten to the point that I just wait for them to be on TV. I can not even get the Netflix DVD out of the envelope – must be because i am reading!

  98. Annette on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:55 pm #

I have seen Up & Avatar & I want to see the Blind Side, but have not seen the others and you mentioned a couple I never even heard of. I do not watch much TV and rarely go to the movies. I am too busy reading those glorious books y’all write!

  99. Lorraine Larose on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:59 pm #

The ten nominated movies should win an Oscar, but if I had to pick only one, it would be Blind Side. I wish there was a book written about all the movies before they’re in the theater. Sometimes the book is a lot better.

  100. Suzanne Enoch on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:29 am #

Leisha, it surprises me how many women liked IB — usually Tarantino is just too violent for me, but the story was so clever and inventive that I could overlook the icky parts.

I’m glad so many of us have seen “Up”. Of course it’s been out the longest, but what an excellent movie.

Isn’t it funny, Lorraine, how it’s just as hard to choose between the 10 movies as it usually is to pick one of 5? And I thought expanding the number of nominees would make it easier. *g*

  101. E.R. on 09 Feb 2010 at 4:31 am #

I’ve seen AVATAR, and it may not have an original plot, but it sure was nice to watch!
I want to see THE BLIND SIDE, but I can wait for the DVD.
I got DISTRICT 9, and I’ll eventually watch it. Eventually.
I dunno if AN EDUCATION or THE HURT LOCKER are my type of movie. So no, I don’t think I’ll watch them.
I also got I. BASTERDS, and maybe someday I’ll watch it. Someday.
As for PRECIOUS, only on a sad day and if I want to cry will I watch that.
And A SERIOUS MAN is not my type of movie. Therefore, I’m not going to watch it.
Like with THE BLIND SIDE, I’ll watch UP IN THE AIR on DVD.
UP is a great animated movie. Watched it and enjoyed it.

So out of the ten, I only saw two movies. As to who will win, I think AVATAR, THE BLIND SIDE, or UP IN THE AIR. It could be PRECIOUS, but I’m really not sure who’ll win this award.

  102. Dovile on 09 Feb 2010 at 6:09 am #

Avatar is my choice. I haven’t watched District 9, but I’d really like to, and the rest of the movies are simply not my cup of tea :) I’ll wait for Up to be on TV, and the other movies are not that interesting to me, so I probably won’t watch them anyway.

  103. Leanne G on 09 Feb 2010 at 7:16 am #

I only watched one of the movies and it was Avatar, I have now watched it like 5 times and I love it!

  104. Martha Andrews on 09 Feb 2010 at 9:09 am #

Inglourious Basterds- I thought the acting was good but caught a couple things that were out of period and I felt that as a plot—it brought you up through what they were doing but it was tied up in too neat a bow and went to far out of the true history and then just tied up too many knots too fast!

I really loved SOLOIST as it showed the growth of the reporter AND the problems from “inside” the head of someone with Schizophrenia but showed the improvement that could be made with caring and love.

For once I LOVED the music that was in it too! I didn’t have to plug my ears from the cacophony usually in modern movies–I really believe that AVATAR will get it but I agree about STAR TREK TOO!!

One think I’d like to mention–in USA–I see something happening to our language that has me lost and comfused–in many books (and newspaper articles) BRING and TAKE are interchanged and that is so confusing. Bring has IN in it and means to “bring” in to where you are—TAKE is (take OUT food?) to go out to where you are not now. In a newspaper account they had this so wrong that I didn’t know where anything happened!

  105. Amanda Hume on 09 Feb 2010 at 9:45 am #

I have seen Up, Avatar, and District 9. I thoroughly enjoyed up. It was adorable. District 9 actually depressed me because I could totally imagine that if something similar happened that the people of this planet would react in much the same way. Many people are intolerant of what they do not understand. Avatar was lovely to watch. I loved the colors and though the plot was a little too light and the same as many other movies I have seen over the years, the characters and the actors that played them were interesting enough to keep me watching.

  106. claudia on 09 Feb 2010 at 1:03 pm #

I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies. I don’t go to the movies at all and since we don’t watch TV either I don’t even see the ads for them. It’s much more fun to just curl up with a good book.

  109. Shan on 09 Feb 2010 at 11:57 pm #

The only one I’ve seen is Avatar. I thought that it was simply amazing. The plot, the acting, and the special effects were superb. SW looked great in this movie. I was watching The Time Traveler’s Wife tonight, which is the most romantic, heartfelt, and heartwarming movies I have seen in a while, and saw a preview of The Blind Side. I started crying just from seeing the preview, so I definitely have to see the entire movie. Of the rest I want to see Inglorious Bastards (Quentin Tarantino is a GENIUS) and maybe one day I will build up the nerve to watch Precious (Way to go Monique).

  110. Rochelle Papurt on 10 Feb 2010 at 12:58 am #

If I were a producer, I would never release any movie until after Halloween, then maybe, just maybe, it will be focused upon. So many movies get lost in the shuffle because they come out to early in the year, most of this year’s movies aren’t in wide release YET, February 10th. Makes you shake your head in wonderment.
The first movie I have seen in the last 3 years is AVATAR, thank goodness not in the 3-D theater, 2-D was plenty. It was fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Then the next week I saw “it’s complicated”. What happened to that great movie in the Oscars! It was funny, LOL funny and poignant all at the same time, and makes you think about it after you have left the theater. This Blog business is great. I feel like I have under a rock the last 3 years and I am like the turtle coming out of its shell. Keep the passion coming. Avid reader.

  111. Luv on 10 Feb 2010 at 5:44 am #

  113. Erin on 10 Feb 2010 at 8:06 am #

I saw “Inglorious Basterds” and “Up”. “Blind Side” is next on my list, I honestly have no desire to see “Avatar” despite the buzz. I also want to see “An Education”, as I love Carey Mulligan, I think she’s absolutely adorable. Last year I saw all of the nominated movies and with the Slumdog win, of which I was not a fan as they did a horrible adaptation, I wasn’t too excited to see some of the nominations this year; but I am in love with “Basterds” while gross and bloody it also tells a story-albeight fake- of a girl who gets revenge in the most awesome way. “Up” made me cry the whole way through, it was amazing and cute and not something I would have expected at all from a Disney/Pixar movie, though with the more recent films it seems the trend is to be sad, and pull at the heartstrings. I think I’ll be okay with any win from the list except for “Avatar” I didn’t like the previews, the plot- the little that there is- I’d heard it before, and really talking could have done a lot.

  114. dorothywc on 10 Feb 2010 at 9:20 am #

I cried during UP as well. It was so sad! I thought Avatar was so great and I loved District 9. It was so original. I have not seen the others, I love Colin Firth so I will see a Single man. Not sure who should win. I agree that Star Trek should have been nominated!!!

The best movie I saw in years !!!

  116. Kimmers on 10 Feb 2010 at 6:23 pm #

I most generally dislike the movies that are up for best picture. I have yet to see Blindside, but I think that one will be deserving of the Oscar but will most certainly not win. I saw Inglourious Basterds with my hubby and we both enjoyed it, but I would not put it in the Best Picture category. It was OK, but not that great. Up was an awesome movie. I would love to see it win, but sadly I don’t think it will. I have no desire to see Avatar – it will probably win. It has been my experience that the movies The Academy nominates for Best Picture are difficult to follow (can you say Babel???) or just plain hard to watch. At my house if a movie gets a good review from the critics we think twice about seeing it. If the critics give it a thumbs down – it’s a sure bet my family will love it!

How many of the nominated movies have you seen?
Avatar – LOVED IT. Saw it four times, going from regular to 3-D IMAX (the best way to see it in true 3-D, OMGosh). I liked the plot. I like the action, romance, drama, and of course the moral. Few stories have morals like take care of mother nature or she may spank you.

    District 9 – “Emperor’s new clothes”

Up – Like a GOOD Disney film, I cried, laughed hardily, hummed the music, and realized that I have had some of these characters in my life.

Have not seen: The Blind Side/ inglorious Basterds / An Education / The Hurt Locker / Precious / Up in the Air
    A Serious Man

    Avatar gets my vote.

I would have to say that I think the Hurt Locker was the best and most riviting movie I have seen this year. It probably won’t win the BIG one as it was not really publicized alot or pushed by the press, a real look at what the men & wemon on our front lines in such a dangerous job go through in the war, it is action from beginning to end and will have you on the edge of your seats. I would have to say Hollywood will probably give the BIG one to Avitar as it was very publicized & pushed by the press and many people went to see it. The Romantic in me votes for Young Victoria!

I hear you about No Country for Old Men. That movie was just WAYYY out there. I usually dont like any Oscar movies they are usually the ones that critics LOVE and that I just…dont get. lol I have seen three of the ones that are nominated. District 9 I am sorry I just thought was REALLY Wierd. Up I loved and my 3 yr old watches it over & over & I always sit through some of it with her. It just catches my heart and imagination. Thats how I want to be when I get old. lol And AVATAR….Oh Wow is all I can say I was expecting to hate it & wound up loving every last minutes of the 2 hr 45 minute long movie. Had a GREAT story line for us green fans. I left the theater with a smile on my face. Even though it wasnt real I really enjoyed the story and the scenery was worth the time alone. The things they can do with computers these days is amazing! I missed out on Blind Side EVERY time I went to try to see it the thing was sold out so I wait with Baited breath for it to come out on DVD.

I absolutely HATED Inglorious Basterds….. Hated it. I should have known better because I don’t usually like Quinten T’s movies. Oh, well at least was only a rental and not a full priced movie ticket. Loved the Blind Side, what a heart warming movie! LOVED AVATAR!

I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie in a theater. I never agree with these so called experts, so they never sway muy opinion anyway.

I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT I DIDN’T SEE NONE OF THE MOVIES THAT ARE NOMINATED. I WANTED TO SEE

PRECIOUS, BUT THE MOVIE WAS AT LIMITED THEATERS. I AGREE WITH ALL THE NOMINEES, AND OF COURSE I’M

PULLING FOR MONIQUE AND GABBY TO WIN, BUT MERYL, HELEN AND SANDRA WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE

TO WIN THE OSCARS. I JUST LOVE MERYL STREEP. SHE’S SUCH A GREAT ACTRESS, AND HELEN MIRREN IS JUST

    AWESOME. HAPPY V-DAY!!!!

I’m voting for Avatar. Yes, the story line was simplistic and preachy but who didn’t leave the theater just dreaming about being one of those beautiful blue creatures ? Any movie that ignites my imagination and gives me something to dream about is a winner in my book.
