Karen RoseKaren Rose & On Writing! & When Goddesses Fall To Earth
I just got a new Droid phone. It’s a very cool phone and I’ve been playing with it for days. One of the apps I downloaded was ringtones. My ringtone used to be the Law & Order theme, then the Mission Impossible theme, for years.
But a new phone should have a new ringtone! So many choices! I downloaded lots of fun tones. Right now the main tone is Travis Tritt’s A Great Day To Be Alive because it always makes me smile. Dedicated tone for Mr. R is Martina McBride’s My Baby Loves Me (just the way that I am). And notification for messages is “Grrr Argh.” (You’ll know this if you’re a Joss Whedon fan.)
My most recent heroine, Detective Olivia Sutherland in SILENT SCREAM, has the Loony Tunes theme play on her phone and when her boss calls, it rings “Bad To The Bone.” I’ve given special ringtones to quite a few characters – it’s another way to individu
alize them, and it’s fun.
I think it would be fun to assign ringtones to historical characters, too,
both fictional and real. For example, George Washington’s phone would play We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister. Take that, English monarchy!
What’s y
our ring tone? If you don’t have one, but could pick one, what would it be? What tone do you think your fave book character might pick, either historical or contemp? What about real historical figures?
And just to make it interesting, I’m giving away an arc of SILENT SCREAM to one lucky poster!

Love your choice! I have Mission Impossible theme for the last half year. I only change it during Christmas holidays when I went with Last Christmas by Wham
Laine on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:11 am #
When I retired I made my general ringtone Footloose and since my husband was still working I made calls from him play Working Class Man. While I was still working I assigned Ride of the Valkeries to my bosses. It was one secret little way of saying what I wouldn’t dare face to face.
Yolanda on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:19 am #
Hi Karen! As I mentioned to you on Twitter yesterday, my ringtone is ‘Attack’ by 30 Seconds to Mars. I love the way the music repeats when my phone rings. And of course, I love the song, so that helps. lol. My husband’s ringtone is ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ by Guns ‘n’ Roses. That’s another awesome one, because the start of that song is still one of my most fave. Slash sure knows how to play that guitar!
Archer on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:56 am #
My ringtone is Phantom of the Opera Techno Remix. I get weird looks when she’s screaming
My BF is Justine Timberlakes – My Love
My BFF is Sharam Party All the Time
No clue what my favorite book character would pick except maybe something classical for Edward Cullen.
Julia Quinn has soundtracks for her books on her website and so does StephenieMeyer.
Archer on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:59 am #
My coworkers ringtone is an annoying guy with a deep voice saying ring ring… its awful but funny.
Judy F on 03 Feb 2010 at 4:44 am #
Lordy I am boring. LOL I just have a basic phone with a dull ring tone. Though at Christmas I have it play Have your self a merry little Christmas. Wild yup that’s me. LOL
My nephew has Welcome to the Jungle as his. He is a huge Cincinnati Bengals fan.
I can’t seem to think at this hour what song I would like to have it play.
ArkansasCyndi on 03 Feb 2010 at 4:51 am #
My current ringtone is the fight song for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, expect when it’s my husband, then it sings Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band…
or my mom, when it rings a rap song. My mo loves it. It goes like this..
Your momma’s calling back
For no real reason but just to chat
She’ll waste your minutes talking ’bout the cat
Or ’bout how Dad has gotten fat
So why pick up
Don’t pick up the phone
it’s your momma, it’s your momma.
When my niece calls, Pretty Woman plays.
There are some truly hysterical ringtones out there. I’ve been meaning to download some new ones.
B on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:14 am #
Considering my favorite book characters are yours, and I’m embarrassed I might suggest something really stupid, I’m asking you instead: What ARE Kristen’s and Abe’s ring tones?
I wish I had a cool phone
*Countdown to SILENT SCREAM* Except that I don’t know how many days are there. But… it’s a symbolic countdown nevertheless.
Sabrina Jeffries on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:15 am #
Like JudyF, I have the standard phone ringtone. One of these days I’ll probably choose another, but it’s just never been high on my priority list. I don’t know what I’d choose, though. I’ll have to think about that. Maybe “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks. It’s my current favorite song. *G*
Angela on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:16 am #
I have one ringtone and it’s the theme from Star Wars.
I should try and get the Mission Impossible theme. It’s one of my favorite theme songs ever.
LoriHandeland on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:50 am #
I’ve been using all the ringtones that came with the phone, which are sounds not songs. I do have it set up so that I have different tones for different people so I can tell who’s calling when I hear the sound.
I would love to get songs though, just haven’t figure out how yet. I keep asking youngest son to do it for me and he keeps agreeing and then not doing it.
If I could pick a ringtone, I’d pick CRAZY by Patsy Cline. Love that song.
My character Liz from the Phoenix Chronicles should have RUNNIN’ WITH THE DEVIL by Van Halen.
Historical figures . . . well since I just finished a book about him I should do Shakespeare. How about MAGIC MAN by Heart?
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:02 am #
Good morning, all!
So did y’all notice G.Wash wearing a blue tooth thingie in his ear? Thought that was hysterical, which of course could have been the remnants of the champagne I drank last night.
First up, I have to thank you British readers – my recent release DON’T TELL is #2 on the paperback bookscan! Still get the shivers saying it. HAVE YOU SEEN HER is #6 on the hardcover bookscan!
So thank you to the British and I hope I didn’t offend with that Twisted Sister English Monarchy
When Mr. R was a US history teacher, he’d show Twisted Sister’s music video to his students to illustrate the mood in the room while writing the Declaration of Independence. The kids truly got that these guys were bad-ass rebels and not sissies wearing girlie tights.
So now, onto today’s blog!
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:07 am #
Fran – I downloaded “I’m Mr. White Christmas” so I’m already ready for next year! I’m Mr. White Christmas, I’m Mr. Snow (dancing in my chair to the beat).
Snicker, Laine. Love the Valkyries for your bosses. I downloaded The Wicked Witch theme from Wizard of Oz and would have gladly used it on a few bosses back in the day. Trouble is, now I don’t have mean bosses. (Unless I’m talking about myself and I can be a real witch sometimes, LOL.)
Julia London on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:08 am #
Karen, I just got a new iPhone a few days ago and have been doing the same thing. I still haven’t picked out a ring tone. There are so many choices, and it feels like the ringtone has to say something about ME, so right now, my phone has a regular phone ring to it.
I need something from the Accidental Tourist, because that’s the way I feel half the time, LOL
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:17 am #
Hey Yolanda! I did go back and listen to the 30 seconds from Mars guys – they’re good! That intro to Sweet Child o Mine would be a terrific ringtone. Will put it on my list.
Archer – another snicker from me thinking about the screams. I love that Party all the Time for a pal’s ringtone. Unfortunately none of my pal’s are partyers.
One of my BFFs is a martial artist who is a world champion. Whenever I think of her, one of the James Bond themes comes to mind because she used it for her musical kata in competition and she practiced to it. I’d have to download that one for her.
But no Party All the Time-ers, sadly.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:25 am #
JudyF, I figured Bengals fans would do Welcome to the Jungle. Maybe we can think up a ringtone for you today! Will noodle this…
ArkCyndi – I LOVE your mama’s rap!!! I’m going to try to find that. I think my mom would think it’s a hoot.
B, a LOT of seconds till SILENT SCREAM. But they pass too quickly. Kristen’s ringtone in I’M WATCHING YOU is Pachelbel’s Cannon. There’s a scene where the bad guys get her and Abe finds her gone (gulp). He listens, and hears her cell phone playing the Canon softly. Her phone’s there but she no longer is…
Abe’s just did the normal jingle, although I imagine Aidan’s would be Aerosmith’s Love is Hard on the Knees.
I wish you had a cool phone, too.
Kathy on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:28 am #
when I actually use my cell, my ringtone is the Addams family theme.
when i have messages, it plays Tijuana taxi. that just makes me chuckle.
it’s my answering machine that I play with at home. I have really funny outgoing messages. For Christmas, I have “thank you for calling the northpole. Santa is away in sunny Mexico right now sipping tiquila at the swim up bar…”
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:37 am #
Sabrina, ha! You’d get some looks from that ringtone, I bet. I was trying to think of a ringtone for Charlotte Harris last night. Something elegant, but naughty.
Oh, I know! She’s Got Legs, by ZZ TOP. Perfect for Charlotte!
Angela, I was able to download Mission Impossible straight from AT&T’s site when I had them. You should be able to find it pretty easily.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:42 am #
Lori, I thought your characters would have interesting ringtones! VanHalen seems like it would fit very well.
I like Crazy, too. Makes me smile.
Julia, so you got the iPhone! I almost did. Alllmost. I was like a click away from getting it a million times. But we don’t get good AT&T 3 G here, so I didn’t. Part of me still wishes I did as my Verizon phone doesn’t sound as clear in normal conversations. I’m glad you like yours!
I totally get feeling like an Accidental Tourist…
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:43 am #
Kathy – I would love the Addams family (snap, snap) or Munsters themes! I haven’t found an Addams family one that starts in the right place yet, but am still looking.
What I really want for my main ring is the Bones theme, but I’m wary of some of the download sites. Anybody know if Dada is safe?
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:47 am #
Now I’m off to the eye doctor who will tell me that I’m old when I complain that my eyes don’t focus well anymore.
Pesky on 03 Feb 2010 at 7:49 am #
You’d think with my music obsession I would have different ring tones for everyone. Turns out if I don’t use a regular ring I don’t pick it up as being a ringtone and tend to ignore it. I was gettting yelled at all the time about “Why don’t you answer your phone!” The basic ringtone catches my attention and I answer the phone.
I do love the books where the characters individualize the ringtones, it amuses me.
Ringtones for fictional characters?
1. Cassanova: Georgia Sattelites “Keep Your Hands To Yourself”
2. Pollyanna: Amos Lee “Bottom of the Barrel”
3. Odysseus’s wife for Odysseus: Mel Torme “Comin Home Baby”
4. Bella’s for Edward: Elvis “Little Less Conversation”
5. Roarke’s for Eve Dallas: Jessie James “Blue Jeans”
Rachel Gibson on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:29 am #
For years my ringtone was The Beatles, Paper Back Writer. Then I changed it to Toby Keith’s Talk About me. Then I changed it to the theme from True Blood, Bad Things. Now I just have a phone ringing tone.
Charlotte M on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:36 am #
I have only the basic ringtones, too. But if I could choose I’d pick Firehouse’s “Love of a Lifetime” for my honey or Rascal Flatts’ “Broken Road”. When my mom calls I hear “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In”, cause, of course, my mom’s a saint…My daughter put “Beethoven’s Fifth” for when I call…lol.
Oh, and even if I don’t win the ARC of Silent Scream, I will definitely being buying it when it comes out!
Deb Marlowe on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:45 am #
I have GNR’s Sweet Child of Mine as my ring tone too, Yolanda!
The dh has Mission Impossible too.
Historical figures: How about Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain–we could dedicate it to Prinny. Or maybe to Beau Brummel.
Harriet Wilson could be…Pussycat Dolls, Don’t Cha. Hee hee.
ladydawgfan on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:47 am #
My ring tone is the Hail State – Mississippi State’s fight song. When my dad calls, people hear Fanfare For The Common Man. When my Mom calls, people hear Brooke White’s version of Let It Be. When my brother calls, people hear The Curly Shuffle (long story). My eldest sister is a physician, so when she calls, people hear “Calling Dr Howard, Dr Fine, Dr Howard!” over and over. If I get a text message, my phone yells “Whooptie Doo, I’ve got a text message!” which can be embarrassing, depending on the situation. And missed calls are noted with “What We’ve Got Here is a Failure To Communicate!”
ladydawgfan on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:50 am #
BTW, for all of my ringtones, I go to phonezoo.com. I can make my own ringtones from my music files and send them to my phone and it is free.
LisaK on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:52 am #
My ringtone used to be the Axel F. theme for years but when I got my new mobile a year and a half or so ago, I decided to go with a song that was fashionable then and so now I have Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” because I’ve been too lazy to change it and I like it too much (and I’m used to it! Imagine standing in a supermarket, a phone is ringing and everyone around you’s getting annoyed with that stupid person who can’t just answer her phone and later you realizer it was you but you didn’t recognize your new ring tone! Embarrassing!).
Just had an idea: Is there a romance novel with a hero who’s English but his romance takes place in America? I’d have the absolutely bestestest ring tone for him: “Englishman in New York” by Sting!
Aly on 03 Feb 2010 at 8:54 am #
I love ringtones! I change mine all the time! Right now my default is RESPECT by Aretha Franklin! But during the college football season it is a Let’s Go Huskers cheer
The one for my family is We Are Family by Sister Sledge, the one for my husband switches between If You Only Knew by Shinedown (his choice) and She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy by Kenny Chesney (My choice since he works for Tractor Supply Co.)
I am really not that much of a music person so I will have to really think about this for my favorite characters or famous people! It will keep me sane during my parent/teacher conference this afternoon
Pesky on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:02 am #
LOL ladydogfan, the inappropriate things phones say. I had lost the holder for my Blackberry just before Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and realized 1/2 way through mass that I hadn’t put it on hold. I had this fear throughout the whole mass that I would tap it wrong and hear “SAY A COMMAND!” shout out through the church.
Freshechelle on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:11 am #
Big Mouth Strikes Again by the Smiths for attached to someone who calls too often to say too little and whose calls often come in twos. Silence is Golden by Garbage was my second choice. I don’t like talking on the phone.
Sugar Daddy by Tom Jones for my store managers because they make the money that pays my salary
Fairytale of New York by Kirsty MacColl and the Pogues for my friends back home in the NY area.
Take This Job and Shove It – a friend had that on her phone for our mutual boss. Then a colleague urged the boss to phone her while she was standing next to him. uh oh
I’ll need to get warmed up to think of ones for fave characters & historical figure but I sure do want that ARC!
Fun topic, KR! When is your release date?
Kathy on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:27 am #
Karen, the ring starts right at the place where they would sing..”they’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky they’re all together ooky- the addamds family!”
I alternate it with the monkees theme song. what can I say, I was brnn in the 60s and tv was/is my life
Kim on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:31 am #
You guys are killing me with the new phones! LOL. I want a touch screen phone! Did you see the hero comes in pink? Be still my beating heart.
I don’t have any cool ringtones because I’m too cheap to pay for them.
Does anyone watch The Good Wife? Alicia has her mother in law set to the theme of Twilight Zone. lol
SuzyQ on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:34 am #
My ringtone is September by Earth Wind and Fire. At Halloween, it always gets changed to the theme song of the first Halloween movie. And I always make my own ringtones.
jackie on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:38 am #
I am in a Tudor phase so . . . I think Henry VIII would have “We are the Champions” Mary Tudor would have “Killer Queen” and Elizabeth I would have “Queen of the World”.
Michelle B on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:39 am #
I used to have “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”, drove my co-workers nuts. So I changed it to one that you can personalize, it sang,”Hey Michelle, your phone is ringing, come on and answer it, and see who it is-ssss”. They laughed and soon everytime it would ring they would all sing along, sort of like a Norm from Cheers thing.
When we found out we were moving to Alabama, ofcourse it had to be, “Sweet Home Alabama”, my theme song.
Audrianna’s, from Madeline’s Ravishing in Red, has to be “Lady In Red”.
Amy on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:42 am #
I always forget to change my ringtone. I have Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams right now, and have had that one for probably 6 months or more. Now that I have been reminded, I must change it. Two of my favourites are Man! I Feel Like A Woman, by Shania Twain and Goodbye Earl, by The Dixie Chicks. Also, Last dance With Mary Jane, Tom Petty.
Lori on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:45 am #
My ringtone for my oldest is “I’m Awesome” by the Dollyrots. So perfect for him, LOL!
Youngest’s is Highway to Hell. Self-explanatory, LOL. Plus, he’s a huge AC/DC fan and used to sing that plus You Shook Me (All Night Long) in the shower. Thankfully, he had no idea what he was singing about!
Hubby’s is a song is Eruption from Van Halen. He’s a rock guitarist, and, well… yeah. It’s Eddie. At Eddie’s best.
Everyone else gets my default ringtone, Back in Black.
(and I have to boo Aly for the Huskers song. I’m a Buffalo *g*)
Tina on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:46 am #
I like my cell to be plain and simple. I just use one that came with it.
I had a co-worker that used a ringtone that sounded like it came from a very old phone.
My current co-worker’s ringtone used to call his name.

I had the theme from Mario Brothers for a while… then I had “I’m Shipping up to Boston” by the Dropkick Murphys… then had “The Internet for for pr0n” from Avenue Q…. oh, and the Flower Duet by Delibes
Sadly, I love having the fun tones, I can never hear them in crowds. I can hear the old phone ring, but apparently, so can most other people, so it is their ring tone as well.
ladydawgfan on 03 Feb 2010 at 10:04 am #
BTW, I just went to Phonezoo and changed my nephew’s ringtone to “Pants on the ground, Pants on the ground, lookin’ like a fool with your pant on the ground!!” Gotta love it!!

Huge congrats on the UK bestseller lists, Karen! You’re a superstar!
I’m like Judy, too…. pretty bland. I just have to have a ringtone that’s different from my dh since our phones are identical.
Pesky and Michelle, those stories are too funny.
And Kim, yes, I did notice that Alicia uses Twilight Zone for her m-i-l. Too funny!

My eyes are still dilated, so having trouble seeing the screen. Blame typos on my eye doctor.
As an aside, he is now forty and having trouble focusing. HA! Satisfaction. Now he’s a little slower to say “Well you ARE forty, you know.”
Pesky, LOL. Love the Bella/Edward one!
Thanks, Charlotte M! Hope you like SILENT SCREAM, whenever you get it! Ha, my daughter wouldn’t do Beethoven’s 5th, she’d be more likely to use the Wicked Witch from Oz theme.

Deb M – your husband has good taste in ringtones
I like You’re So Vain for Brummel and a LOT of other people.
LadyDawg – Love the failure to communicate. I’d try to find a clip from the SNL spoof on that where they stick people in the language lab for punishment. “What we have here is a failure to communicate bilingually.” I used that in DIE FOR ME when Vito was trying to talk to a Russian.
Thanks for the phonezoo tip!
LisaK – that’s happened to me in the supermarket. It is embarrassing!

Kim, haven’t seen Good Wife, but it’s on my list for after I finish 24. Twilight Zone would be good for lots of people’s MIL, I think. But not us, right, should we become MIL’s in the future. We’d be Sugar n Spice or somthing

Michelle B – now I’ve got Sweet Home Alabama in my head. Lady in Red perfect for Audrianna!
Amy – that’s a good Shania song for a phone. Makes me think of the video.
Lori – Highway to Hell would be a great one for a person I know! Will download today.
Sheridan – I almost downloaded Internet is for “pron” from Ave Q but was afraid it might ring around kids. But Mr. R and I laughed when I played it for him. Inappropriate as HECK and completely hilarious.

What a fun topic, Karen. I’m going to steal some of the suggestions for various friends/family members.
My DH’s ring tone is merengue music, my oldest son’s is THE ENTERTAINER, and my youngst son’s is Fur Elise. I have a friend who live in Dallas, and hers is YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS. I have a friend who has a cat’s meow as his M-I-L’s ring tone. LOL

I have different ringtones for different sections. I have a family ringtone – Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” rings for that. That way I know it is a family member calling. For my friends, I have Weather Girls – “It’s Raining Men” and for when work calls, I have “The James Bond Theme”.
I also have different ring tones for when I don’t have the person on my phone, when I get a text message or a voicemail. Makes it easy to see what type of phone call I am getting and who to avoid if I don’t want to talk to them.
Louisa Cornell on 03 Feb 2010 at 12:17 pm #
Congrats on the UK Bestseller list, Karen ! My Mom’s friends are sure to tell her all about it. You know how much their little Transatlantic KaRo conclave loves your books!
My nephew as the Mamarap answer for his Mom. For his Dad he has the Money, money song (The Apprentice Theme) which is a joke because my brother is always broke! For my Mom (his Nana) he has Happy Days are Here Again. He loves his Nana! And for me he has Who Let the Dogs Out, of course!
My ring for my CP is the Witch’s theme from the Wizard of Oz, but don’t tell her. She is one touch cookie!
For my MIL it is Elton John’s The Bitch is Back. (The ONLY advantage to being a widow is you don’t have to see his mother!)
For the bakery’s direct line my ring is Food, Glorious Food from Oliver. But if the main Wal-Mart number calls me it is Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem. I swear that place will be the death of me!
For my nephew it’s the Alabama Fight Song. He’s a freshman there.
For my niece it’s Sweet Little Sixteen.

I’m feeling like the only Luddite in the room because I haven’t bothered to download any ringtones. I’m like some of you here — I’m a bit overwhelmed with the choices. My daughter, meanwhile, always has an amusing ringtone for me when I call her… I think right now it’s The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Hahahahahaha . . ha . . . haa . . . h . . . a.
I don’t get no respect.
Btw, Julia, I saw that one of your emails yesterday said “Sent from Julia’s iPhone” so I knew you’d ‘crossed over’. The second the iPhone moves from AT & T, I’m getting one, too. For now, I’ll just cast lingering, envious glances your way.

I have a different ring tone for each person in my phone and all remind me of them in some way. I used to have “Lets get it on” but my friend noticed that everytime I played it my male cat (Justice) would look over at my female cat (Mama) and walk over to her, grab her in the back of the neck and jump on. As soon as the ring tone stops he goes on about his way as if nothing happened. It was a novelty for me so I showed all my friends and all of them want me to get it on video and send it to Americans Funniest Videos. I thought it was really strange but funny. My female cat didn’t share my joy! ( I now leave her claws a little longer than his so she will get her point across that no means no!)
Louisa Cornell on 03 Feb 2010 at 12:26 pm #
For Mozart the ringtone would have to be the Overture from The Marriage of Figaro.
For Robin Hood – The William Tell Overture
Ghandi – Let it Be by the Beatles
Edgar Allen Poe – Michael Jackson’s Thriller
Our Founding Fathers – How about Revolution by the Beatles
William Wilberforce – Amazing Grace, of course!

I have “Giggy giggy goo means I Love You” by Phineas and the Ferbtones for my hunny,
Bon Jovi’s “Let it Rock” for the boy,
Stewie from the family guy’s “mom mom ma ma” for my D.
My mom is Fir Elise and the schools says “trouble again” in some annoying voice.

general ringtone – Black-Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling” – puts me in a good mood
Mr. G – “Ain’t No Other Man” by Xtina Aguilera
DD #1 – Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now…) by C+C Music Factory
DD #2 – Brown-Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
BF – You’re My Best Friend by Queen (mine on her phone is the ESPN Sports Center theme, lol)
house phone – “Home” by Michael Buble
other close friends have other songs…
I can’t think of any fictional characters, but I’ll give it a whirl. Someone would have to give me a character, then I’d find the ringtone.
Hannibal Lecter – “Crazy” by Seal
Stephanie Plum – “Private Eyes” by Hall & Oates
Roarke – “If I Had A Million Dollars” by Bare Naked Ladies
Amanda on 03 Feb 2010 at 1:41 pm #
the only ring tone that I do not get tierd of is the one where it sounds like an old school phone ringing
Susan in AZ on 03 Feb 2010 at 1:49 pm #
How come nobody but me likes the Johnny Gunn theme? Man, that sounds good on a ring tone.
GSM on 03 Feb 2010 at 1:51 pm #
Wow–You folks have some great ringtones in use. Mine is just a regular, generic selection. I should download something special Choices, choices…
Mary C on 03 Feb 2010 at 1:53 pm #
Finding Neverland
Claudia Dain on 03 Feb 2010 at 2:41 pm #
Whatever came with the phone. I’m just not a gadgety girl.
Gwynlyn MacKenzie on 03 Feb 2010 at 2:42 pm #
My ringtone is the first 8 bars or so of Vivaldi’s Spring. Doesn’t matter where we are, I can always recognize my phone. When I call my older daughter, her phone rings “We Belong” by Pat Benatar (which I love.) I haven’t bothered with individualized ringtones though. Don’t use the cell enough to warrant the expense.
TrishD on 03 Feb 2010 at 2:45 pm #
Ok… I’m so boring. My ringtone is one of the standard, it came with the phone ringtones.
KarenR, If I can be so bold as to offer a ringtone suggestion for Abe?? For some reason I can hear the chorus of Lonestar’s “My Front Porch Looking In” when I think about his phone ringing in later books.
Kathy on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:16 pm #
Karen H, my ringtones were downloaded just before my phone went off the list for being so old. it’s a very tiny Nokia that is at least 10yrs. no iphone for me.
Judith on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:38 pm #
My choice of ringtone is pretty boring. But I did select a loud and lively one from the selection on the phone.
My daughters is Crazy Ducky, frantic & demented, she never picks the phone up quick enough for my taste!
Jane on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:45 pm #
I don’t have a ringtone, but I would choose the Black Eyed Peas “I’ve Got A Feeling.” I need something upbeat. One of my favorite characters is Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and his ringtone would be Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger.”
Sabrina Jeffries on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:51 pm #
“She’s Got Legs” for Charlotte. Snicker, snicker. She could probably use “Bitch,” too. Actually, that’s my current heroine’s theme song. *G*
And congrats on the bestseller list placements in England, Karen! That’s great!!!
Judy F on 03 Feb 2010 at 3:59 pm #
I remember at the bookstore once someones phone was ringing and the ringtone was Beyonce bootylicious (sp)
I about died laughing when it was a guy’s phone.
Michelle B on 03 Feb 2010 at 4:58 pm #
I’m with Aly, born and raised Husker fan, even though we don’t live there anymore. My DS has the Husker fight song for his ring tone.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:14 pm #
Donna S – well, if you don’t have a ringtone yet, here are lots of good choices!!
Thanks, Fiona! I used to have Fur Elise – such a nice soothing tone.
ColinFirthFan – I don’t think I’ve heard the Iron Maiden one. Must go have a listen.
Quilt Lady – I love that Bob Seger song! Makes you dance even if you’re sitting in a chair.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:18 pm #
Suzy Q – Audacity. Must try it!
Jamie – I love it’s Raining Men! I haven’t heard that song in forever. Must see if it’s available on my download app.
Louisa, thank your mama and all her friends for me!!!! I love how you can personalize tones for all the people who call you. Who Let The Dogs Out is perfect for the DogLady who saves dogs. Makes me smile. Altho I would have thought you would have at least one song in there about funeral homes…
Karen H – no way! You have to have a ringtone. At least one for Hot Cop.
Madeline Hunter on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:21 pm #
I’d pick Against the Wind by Bob Seegar. Although if I wanted a ring tone that would sound nice but get my attention, it would be The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:35 pm #
SlickChick – your cat responded to a ringtone? How odd…
Louisa – Let It Be, perfect for Ghandi. Poe and Thriller, very good too!
Anne – thanks for the mxyer tip!
Suzanne – I knew someone would have Star Wars for your ringtone. James Bond theme is perfect for your heroine!
NancyG – love Roarke and Bare Naked Ladies.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:54 pm #
Amanda, you’re the second person to talk about old school rings. Must investigate this.
Susan in AZ – what is the Johnny Gunn theme? I’m going to have to look it up. Hubby didn’t even know what it was.
Mary C – do you mean the soundtrack from the Johnny Depp biopic?
Gwynlyn — love Pat Benetar! Great choice.
Claudia, I will have to find you a ringtone, girl.
Joni on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:56 pm #
My ringtone is my oldest daughter’s current favorite son The Climb.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:57 pm #
TrishD – a perfect choice for Abe. Especially since one of the little girls has red hair, which his and Kristen’s daughter Kara does.
Judith, Crazy Ducky – think I will be avoiding that one. Got enough demented stuff in my life, LOL.
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:03 pm #
Jane – you made me think of What a Feeling by Irene Cara. Love that song, so up.
Sabrina, thank you! No, no Bitch for Charlotte. Okay, maybe in a good way.
Madeline, I’ve learned something new! Didn’t put you with Bob Seger. Like it.
Louisa Cornell on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:52 pm #
Karen, I have been looking for one about funeral homes, actually! No luck yet! I am still in touch with a couple of the guys I worked with in the business and I would LOVE to have a funky funeral home tune to announce their calls !!
Lisa G on 03 Feb 2010 at 10:05 pm #
Gosh! I have several ringtones, all change with my mood.
1: Heaven by Los Lonely Boys
2: All Summer Long by Kid Rock
3: Boondock by LittleBigTown
4: Sober By Pink
5: Keeps Getting Better by Christina Aguilera
I’m getting a new phone soon so I will be downloading brand new ones soon.
Leslie on 03 Feb 2010 at 10:13 pm #
I only have a special ring tone for incoming calls. It’s the theme song from I Dream of Jeannie. It was one of my favorite shows as a kid and the ring tone is very distinct.
Linda Henderson on 03 Feb 2010 at 10:35 pm #
Well my ringtone would be Living On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. One of my favorite characters Eve Dallas in the In Death series by J.D. Robb would have Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson and Thomas Edison would have The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia ( can’t remember who sang that one)
Karen Rose on 03 Feb 2010 at 10:41 pm #
Louisa – If I find a funeral parlor tone, I will be sure to tell you straightaway. Honest.
Lisa G – have fun with your new phone!
Leslie – I chuckled at I Dream of Jeannie – I loved that show. Always wanted a Jeannie outfit. I had a Velvet doll whose hair came out of her head like Jeannie and I dressed her in a Jeannie outfit, but that’s as close as I got.
Linda – perfect for THom Edison! I love Eve Dallas, too. I think in Eve’s world she’d have one of Mavis’s songs playing on her phone, but in our world, you made a good choice, LOL.

I only have one ring tone and it is Cowgirls Don’t Cry by Brooks and Dunn (with Reba), I’m a George Strait fan so I don’t know why I have Brooks and Dunn.
Stacy Stewart on 04 Feb 2010 at 8:34 am #
My ringtone for when my husband calls is Lucky by Jason Maraz with Colbie C.
My default ringtone is Flightless Bird, American Bird, because it’s a pretty song and everyone compliments me on it.
I haven’t read LKH since the 9th book, but I bet that all Anita Blake’s bed mates ring tone for her would be Crazy Bitch by Buck Cherry. If you haven’t heard that song look it up for at least one listen.
Jennifer Tribue on 04 Feb 2010 at 9:20 am #
Congrats on the Android phone. I had one for about two months, then went back to my BlackBerry, which is odd for me because I’m a technology junkie. I don’t really have a ring tone of music on my phone, but I DO have the Stewie Griffin “Mom….Mommy…..Mommy…….Mom……Ma…….Mom…..MOM!” sound bite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNkp4QF3we8 I get a lot of laughs out of that one.
Regarding historical figures and ring tones, how about:
Beau Brimmel – “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred
Duke of Wellington – “We Are The Champions” by Queen
Cassanova – “Love to Love You Baby” by Donna Summer
Queen Elizabeth I, when dealing with the Spanish Armada and Philip’s shenanigans – “Momma Said Knock You Out!” by L.L. Cool J.
I could go on…..
Angela on 05 Feb 2010 at 6:23 am #
The Night the Lights went out in Georgia was sung by Vicki Lawrence.
She was on the Carol Burnett Show and played Mama.
Marie on 07 Feb 2010 at 8:30 pm #
I have “Dead and Gone” by Justin Timberlake. If I could think of any historical person I would say Queen Victoria with “Girls just want to have fun.” Have fun with your new phone, and I can’t wait for Silent Scream!
Brenda Morris on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:11 pm #
My main tone is who can it be now (men at work), I have my husband as Sweet home alabama thats where he’s from and my oldest boy is The Freaks come out at night.
qotu on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:17 pm #
How about St. Peter having “I am a Rock”?
Kris on 08 Feb 2010 at 7:27 pm #
My ring-tone is the Pirates of the Caribbean “yo ho yo ho, a pirates life for me” I grew up going to Disneyland, and my favorite ride was the POC, so it brings back happy memories.
In the end, my ringtone is a way for me to get back at my beloved children when they drive me nuts. Argue with me 15yo son? I will call your sister or your dad and have them call me while I sneakily follow you around Walmart with my, very embarrassing to a 15yo boy, ringtone volume up to the loudest it can go, and then…………I won’t even answer it right away, I will let it play all the way out to the end.
ARGH MATEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Star P:) on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:03 pm #
I have several ring tones, depending on caller and my mood. During college football, I have “Texas Fight” and “Eyes of Texas” for this Univ. of Texas-Austin alum. My husband gets Jesse James “Wanted”…my general ringtone is “SuperGirl” by Saving Jane. I’m the mom of three and a teacher, so I feel like supergirl all the time.
My sister is Pink’s “So What?” because she likes to chat and I don’t, so frequently I have to ask her to cut to the chase.
Those are the main tones. Others come and go as needed.
Salli Goodrow on 08 Feb 2010 at 8:46 pm #
Can’t wait for June!!! My ringtone is Carry On My Wayward Son. Love the music they play in Supernatural. Any of those great classics make great ringtones.
Terry Miller on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:40 pm #
My ringtone is not a tone. I have my phone actually ring, like an old-fashioned phone. It always makes me smile because it reminds me of when I was a kid. And, the looks on peoples faces is priceless. My daughters say it is annoying, just another perk!
Annette on 08 Feb 2010 at 10:57 pm #
I do not do the cell phone thing… I do have a Tracfone, but no ringtones for it (not even sure I can do that) I hardly ever use the thing. I know that on my daughter’s phone MY ringtone is “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffet..lol
Lorraine Larose on 08 Feb 2010 at 11:02 pm #
I change my ringtones like I change underwear. I try them all.
Kory Gott on 08 Feb 2010 at 11:05 pm #
Wow. I could be the last person on the planet without a cell phone. Therefore, no ringtone! But if I had one, it’d be “Funhouse” by P!nk.
(It just makes me wanna moooove, ya know?) Ah, to pick a the ringtone of a favorite character would be to choose ONE character above all others. An impossible task for the librarian in me!
Susan Spidle on 09 Feb 2010 at 5:05 am #
My favourite ringtone if I could get it would be Shania Twain’s Honey I’m Home.
Leanne G on 09 Feb 2010 at 7:21 am #
At the moment my cellphone has the sound of a ringing phone but I have been thinking of putting a “piercing scream” as the ring tone, so that when it rings it’s scares everyone lmao I think it would be hilarious to see everyone jump when my phone rings!
Jaenelle on 09 Feb 2010 at 7:36 am #
Awesome Choice!
marelou on 09 Feb 2010 at 7:54 am #
Mine is the theme from “Mission: Impossible” because it’s always an impossible mission for me to dig out my phone from my purse, unlock it and answer the call before the caller hangs up. ;(
barb wild on 09 Feb 2010 at 8:28 am #
My favorite ring tone on my phone would be a selection by Carrie Underwood…I love to hear from her , she inspires me and when i hear Jesus take the wheel it inspires me. My ringtone before was bring in the clowns and people thought it was creepy so i changed it!
sarah wild on 09 Feb 2010 at 8:30 am #
My ringtone that is great for me right now is Black or White by Adam lambert. (or michael jackson) Reminds me how precious all people are regardless of their race and culture. Inspires me because i hope to be a missionary counselor one day for children

Haven’t read Karen Rose’s work before but I’ll definitely check out Silent Scream after reading this blog. This woman’s thinking works for me. Loved seeing George and Twisted Sister together!
Candy on 09 Feb 2010 at 11:05 am #
How clever to include the character’s ring-tones. A rind-tone can tell volumes about the character’s persona. I think it’s the little details and nuances that can make a writer’s characters so vivid and believable. I haven’t read Silent Scream yet, but I’ll be even more watchful of those details now !
cheryl m kaplan on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:47 pm #
When I call my son’s cell, The Lady in Red rings. I use a red pocketbook, and always wear at least one thing red. Only my nail polish isn’t red. So, the song is quite fitting.

Julie Andrews should have My Favorite Things.
I have SOS from Mamma Mia for my husbands calls and change my default calls from Enya to Shania to Billy Joel to…….etc, etc!

Sheila B on 09 Feb 2010 at 10:08 pm #
My pick would be Miranda Lamberts Gunpowder and Lead jsut because I love the song or the Eagles New Kid in Town because I always was. And I love the Eagles! And for characters in a book unless they a series books I dont usually remember the characters more than a couple of weeks because I read 4 or 5 books a month.I read so much that I practically inhale books!

Karen – ha! Wish I could claim full credit for pairing Dee Snyder and Geo Wash. Hubby was a history teacher and would show that video to his class to demonstrate the rebel nature of the Continental Congress and the Revolutionary Forces. Hubby is very imaginative…
Salli – Thanks! june will be here before we know it tho…

Mine: Ride of the Valkyrie
Dracula: Meatloaf – the chorus to: Bat out of Hell
Sweet and simple selection
BUT the Wolfman’s has to be long to allow for the change.
Wolfman: Meatloaf – introduction to: You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night):
On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
Will he offer me his mouth? Yes! Will he offer me his teeth? Yes!
Will he offer me his jaws? Yes! Will he offer me his hunger? Yes!
Again, will he offer me his hunger? Yes! And will he starve without me? Yes!
And does he love me? Yes!
Yes! On a hot summer night would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
Yes! I bet you say that to all the boys

My parents home & cell is set up for with Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne, couldn’t help myself, I giggled as I downloaded because it fits them to a T. My girlfriends are all set up with Girls Just Want to Have FUN. My boss is set up with “Rock the Casbah”. My one nephew who shares my love for the old Godzilla movies of course is set up with “Godzilla” that “oh, no… there goes Tokyo go go godzilla” just makes me giggle. The other Nephew is set up with the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme. My girlfriends hubby gets “Don’t fear the Reaper” as he used to be in the funeral business. If any one from work calls me, then it is “Welcome to the jungle”. I can’t help it, I giggle like a fool when I come across the right song for someone and cannot help myself and load it. You should have seen the salon owner where I was getting my manicures, for some reason, the parental unit must call me when I am getting a mani! I don’t know why but they do it at least 50% of the time. So there I am getting pampered and “ALL ABOARD, HAHAHAHAHAAHA” screams out of my phone at full volume, thank GOD he was not cutting someones hair! He almost had a stroke! All the girls laughed & laughed!

I am a Gator (UF grad), so my basic ringtone is Crocodile Rock.
When my bf calls, I hear It’s Magic.
When my gfs call, I hear Girls just Wanna Have Fun.
Being Irish / Scots mix, my family’s ringtone is Scotland the Brave.
I think Acheron would love some AC/DC.

MY RING TONE IS FLOOTLOOPS. MY FAVE CHARACTER RING TONE WOULD BE THE THEME SONG FROM THE
MOVIE, “GONE WITH THE WIND”. I HAVE MANY FAVE CHARACTERS, DUE TO, I’M A ROMANTIC FREAK. IF I HAD
TO PICK ONE FOR ME TO HAVE PERSONAL, IT WILL BE, POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME BY DEF LEPPARD, FOR THE
ROCK AND ROLL SIDE OF ME. FOR THE POP SIDE, IT WILL BE, TRUE COLORS BY CYNDI LAUPER, AND FOR THE
ROMANTIC PART OF ME, IT WOULD BE, TAKE A BOW BY MADONNA.
