A New Moon is a-risin’!
Nov 21st 2009
Karen HawkinsKaren Hawkins
Hot Cop and I took his daughter and three of her friends to see New Moon last night and we were treated to four tweens dressed in Team Edward and Team Jacob memorabilia who were in complete and utter ecstasy. I can say without hesitation that those chicas have big time Movie Crushes.
Their excited chatter made me remember my own enthusiasm when Star Wars came out and how I fell totally in love with Hans Solo. I didn’t have a Team Solo t-shirt, but only because they didn’t make them.
In recent years, I’ve developed a huge Movie Crush on Strider from Lord of the Rings … oh and have I mention Cap’n Jack from Pirates of the Caribbean?
Have you ever had a Movie Crush? Who was it? Did you buy a poster, t-shirt, or coffee mug in honor of them?

I never had a huge movie crush as these Twilight fans seem to have. I see my 17 year old sister, and it’s wow. Really! It’s kinda funny. I was never like that with movies. I’ve had many tv crushes and book crushes, but movies, there are few.
I remember my very first movie crush, though. I was about five or six, and, good Lord, I thought Captain Von Trapp was about the most charming man ever. I sighed when he came on in The Sound of Music. And, having watched the movie hundreds of times (literally), I think part of me will always have a crush on him.
Most recently, I’ve gotta think. Captain Jack Sparrow is pretty awesome, Karen, I’ll have to agree with you there!!!
Oh, I got a crush. Two, actually. Both Mr. AND Mrs. Smith. I mean. I was never much of a Brad Pitt kind of girl, but in that movie, him and Angelina Jolie, guns and explosions. It’s HOT, man. Just pure and simply hot. They’re both crushes. Ehhhh :p
LisaK on 21 Nov 2009 at 4:21 am #
I’ve never had a movie crush whatsoever. I think it’s because I’m a very matter-of-fact person and that whole “Oh my gosh I’m soooo in love with that actor”-thing isn’t in me. I’m only shaking my head at all those hysteric girlies who fancy themselves in love with, say, Robert Pattinson. Poor guy must be feeling pretty awkward about this, I reckon (maybe I’m wrong and he enjoys it, though. Don’t know.)…
MizMacgyver on 21 Nov 2009 at 6:18 am #
There has been only one movie/actor that I have been tempted to have a poster of and I am no where near a teen, that would be Captain Jack Sparrow. I asked my son if I could put it in his room so people wouldn’t think was nuts. My son told me I could look at it when I cleaned his room, uhhhhh no, you clean your room, I will only brave that area to look at Captain Jack.
Bronte on 21 Nov 2009 at 6:46 am #
I think my most massive movie crush was Keanu Reeves when he starred in speed – I watched all his backlist pronto. I was also a huge fan of the x-files. I still have a mug that was bought back in 1995 and its held up pretty well despite almost constant use.
Lisa H on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:10 am #
Well, my first movie crush was Kevin Costner in Robin Hood…very hot.
Captain Jack took my breath away and still does, and Edward Cullen makes me squishy in alllllll the right places!
So, to answer your question, Oh yes!
Alicia on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:19 am #
I was all about some Keanu Reeves back in tha day too! (I still love him) My crush on him started with ‘Point Break’ and just escalated from there! (A Walk in the Clouds?!?! *dreamy sigh*)
Now my movie crushes vary. For I while I loved Matthew McCaunahey(sp?), Orlando Bloom, Vin Deisel (Riddick–need I say more?), etc.
I am all about some Ryan Reynolds right now. In ‘Wolverine’, omigosh…he was so HOTT!! I watched ‘The Proposal’ just a couple of weeks ago and loved him in that too!
Though I do have movie crushes, the majority of my favorite men are in BANDS! I love HOT Rock-and-Rollers!!!
Freshechelle on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:56 am #
I always get a little crush on any good lead actor, especially the kind who isn’t obviously attractive right away, while watching the film. Like Ryan Gosling in some Anthony Hopkins movie. When he first came on the screen, “What’s the big deal?”, by the middle of the movie, I was a little in love.
But an obsessive fan with posters & t shirts for an actor? Nah. For music yes!. It was Roger Taylor from Duran Duran. At 15, I was in a mob scene in Times Square to see them at some record store signing that became a news event and the appearance got canceled. I never did that again. I wasn’t the screaming type and it was at the early in their success here so we didn’t expect a large crowd. We had easily gotten backstage a year earlier to meet them when they were still an opening act.
TrishD on 21 Nov 2009 at 8:04 am #
Tristian, Legends of the Fall. I’m not quite sure it was a crush, I think it may have been full on love!!
TrishD on 21 Nov 2009 at 8:08 am #
Ok… I loved him but spelled his name wrong… Tristan.
I wasn’t in love with Brad Pitt the actor… nope. It was defiantly Tristan the character.
Freshechelle on 21 Nov 2009 at 8:15 am #
Yeah, Tristan was hot. really, really hot…
Cail on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:01 am #
Well, I spent a glorious few hours drooling over Jacob myself last night. One of my bffs and I went to see New Moon and totally swooned our way through the movie. It was heaven. I’d say those boys are my new crushes. Sigh.
elsiehogarth on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:08 am #
Karen, I am totally there with a crush on Harrison Ford/Han Solo. I can’t even remember how many time I saw Star Wars just to see him. My crush now is Jason Stratham. Lock Stock and Smoking Barrels was the first movie I saw him in 11 years ago and that was it for me. I’ve seen all his movies, have them all on DVD and he’s what they call a man’s man. To me, he is the face of an Action Hero that says “don’t mess around with me” but also has a heart but needs to take care of business first.
Michelle B on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:15 am #
Can’t say I have any movie crushes. When I was 12-13 years old it was Donny Osmond and his brothers. I had posters that came with albums on my wall and thansk to Tiger Beat Magazine had more. So you can imagine my delight when Donny came on DWTS. One week he did “One Bad Apple” in his favorite color, purple!
Alicia on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:16 am #
Oh yeah, Elsiehogarth!! Jason Statham is gorgeous! The garage scene in the first “Transporter” movie! (you know, with the motor oil and the bicycle pedals!) I like to have DIED from all that VERY MALE HOTTNESS!!!!
LoriHandeland on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:39 am #
I like what Trish said –not in love with the actor but the character. I feel better about my Edward crush that way.
Sadly, I do have a Team Edward shirt, which I got as a joke because of one of my books. But I do love Edward.
Of course the way Jacob looks these days . . . That may change.
elsiehogarth on 21 Nov 2009 at 9:53 am #
Oh Alicia, I have to say that every time I see a Black Audi, on the road, it makes me sigh and think of Jason/Frank Martin. I even have taped a commercial he did for Audi racing through the streets like he does in the Transporter movies. Ahhhh!!!!!
Madeline Hunter on 21 Nov 2009 at 10:09 am #
When I was young, all my crushes were rock stars, not movie actors. Maybe because I couldn’t afford to go to many movies. So I had posters, etc, of rockers. When I matured I had a few crushes but they were not movie specific. Just actors I appreciated, no matter what the movie. Like Sam Elliott. No posters or coffee mugs for him, tho.
I remember the experience of the rocker crushes, tho. I think one reason romance novels appealed to me was because they echoed that type of crush, and how all-absorbing it was when I was a tween.
Nicole Jordan on 21 Nov 2009 at 10:10 am #
I confess I did have a crush… On Christopher Reeve when the first Superman movie came out. (Okay, so I’m showing my age.) I don’t remember any since then, but my memory may be going as I mature, so I can’t be certain *G*.
Actually I remember a lot more TV crushes than movie crushes — and it’s still that way for me. Mat Bomer in White Collar is my current TV crush. Gorgeous eyes.
Come to think of it, I did share your crush on Han Solo, Karen!
Pesky on 21 Nov 2009 at 10:19 am #
Actually buy memorabilia? OK, the only one would be Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. It was a mug with him and his friend looking down into the map room and it said “Snakes, very dangerous…you go first.” I loved that mug.
Crushes: I adapt them, everyone needs someone to dream on. Got my Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Daniel Day Lewis as Hawkeye, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack, Cary Grant as well…Cary Grant… However, they are crushes, I know there is a fine line between crush and OMG!!! That woman is batpoo crazy… Kinda like…one cat ok (unless you dress it up in embarassing sweaters and send out family portraits of just the cat) 29 cats…face it you’ve strolled over the line into cat lady territory (which is fine as long as you are aware that you are there and don’t start knitting sweaters out of your cat’s hair and sending out family portraits of you in the middle of the cats).
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 10:32 am #
B, I’ve never watched Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but I can see I need to. Pronto!
LisaK, I’ve always thought I was very matter-of-fact, but I think that’s a myth I tell myself because I’m very good at dealing with basic realities. In my reading and movie lives, ah … no. Hans Solo was meant to be mine.
MIzMcG, BWHAHAHAHA! I bought a life sized Edward cutout for my stepdaughter’s party and she LOVES it. The dogs … not so much.
I would love a cutout of Cap’n Jack, though. Mmmm. Something to smile at while I drink my morning coffee!
Bronte, I have a friend who was a HUGE XFiles fan (she even wrote some great fan fic, too — one was considered for a script, but then the show was cancelled) and she had such a Movie Crush on Mulder. He was cutie — so self deprecating and funny!
Pesky on 21 Nov 2009 at 10:42 am #
BTW, I get the women’s version of Swimsuit Illustrated every year…People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive Issue…and well…I dance around the house with it singing “How Lovey To Be A Woman…” Don’t judge, I haven’t knitted a sweater out of my cat’s hair yet.
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 11:03 am #
LisaH, that’s the only movie where I’ve fallen for a Kevin Costner character, but I have to say that’s my favorite Robin Hood evah. The Brian Adams song that went with that movie is phenom, too. “Everything I do.”
Alicia, even though I’m a Hugh Jackman fan (I know that surprises you), I love the Wolverine character and had a huge Movie Crush on him. He was so complex and tormented and the way he loved Jane Grey … wow. Whoever wrote that comic really understood character conflict. After Wolverine, I adore the Gambit character … he’s a charmer, and yet had his own demons. He’s yummy!
Fresh, you have to respect an actor who isn’t that attractive and yet can portray a character as attractive. That’s a True Movie Crush! Also, that’s so cool about Duran Duran! And what a perfect fan moment. I’ve had a huge Music Crush on Jakob Dillon. Those eyes … sigh.
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 11:11 am #
TrishD, ohhhh yessss, Tristan. Even the name is romantic. Excellent Movie Crush!
Cail, they say Jacob bulked up for that movie. I saw some pics and I’d say “Ah, yes he did!” It was fun watching the girls walk out of the movie and seeing/hearing everyone’s excitement. It was interesting that only about 50% of the audience consisted of tweens. The rest were very much adults and seemed to have enjoyed the movie just as much. That’s cool!
Elsie, I LOVE Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. That along with Snatch are on my list of Fave Movies Ever and I’m SO excited that Guy Ritchie (Madonna’s ex) who directed both of those movies, also directed the soon-to-be released Sherlock Holmes featuring Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law! I definitely had a Movie Crush on the character Turkish in Snatch. He was SO funny in that movie! And as Bacon in LSaTSB, too. SUCH excellent, well-developed characters!
Suzanne Enoch on 21 Nov 2009 at 11:27 am #
Oh, you had me at Han Solo. Sigh.
I get movie crushes all the time. And yes, I collect the memorabilia. While I just don’t see the appeal of Robert Pattinson and his uni-brow, I collect figures from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men, and Serenity/Firefly. And the Muppets, which is more about a huge admiration for Jim Henson.
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 11:46 am #
Michelle B, I had a ton of Music Crushes, too … who didn’t love Donnie O singing Puppy Love? **sigh** Donnie Osmond seems pretty normal for having been a teen age heart throb — one of the successes! So may of them turned out Very Bad.
Lori, I can TOTALLY see you crushing on Edward. He’s so painfully in LOVE. He faced doom, banishment, and loss all in the name of love. Heck, he’s giving me shivers right now. Hon, you’re spot on — Edward is a worthy Movie Crush.
Elsie and Alicia, I can see I need to see the Transporter movies! Sounds like I’ve missed out.
Madeline, I have some actors I follow, too. Hugh Jackman (of course) but Sam Elliot’s fascinating, too. He’s in one of my fave movies, The Big Labowski, as the narrator and oh my, that voice. He’s a worthy Actor Crush!
Nicole, ooooh yesssssssss! Neal Caffrey is charming and devious and conflicted — DELICIOUS! Oh my. Whew. Better fan myself before I write anything more because I’ll melt the keyboard.
Oh, I thought of another Movie Crush (although it’s really a TV Crush) and that’s Remington Steele. I was SO in love with him!
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 11:56 am #
Pesky, yeah, there are some lines in the sand when it comes to fan-dom. And I don’t judge you for dancing around the house with your Sexiest Man issue. I’ve been known to waltz with one or two myself.
Knitting a sweater out of cat hair sounds very sneezy. I always see stories on those cat people and think “Ok, lady, here’s the cut-off. It’s when YOUR quality of life decreases. That’s when you have too many cats.” But of course, most of the ones we read about in the papers are really ‘cat hoarders’ and not regular ole ‘cat ladies.’
Btw, a reader once contacted me privately and told me she’d gone to her county courthouse and looked up a famous author’s personal address from tax records and wanted to know if I thought it would be ‘wrong’ to contact the author there since the reader was just certain this author never read the fan mail sent to her p.o.box. That scared the bejeebers out of me. I told this fan that in NO WAY should she send a letter to that author’s private home and that even looking up the address in that way was very stalkerish behavior. Sheesh!
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 12:00 pm #
Suzanne, you have an enviable collection! I’d like to have some of those, but I don’t have anywhere to display them.
And I TOTALLY forgot Indian Jones! I SOOOO wanted to be a heroine in one of those movies. *I* wouldn’t have screamed non-stop. Did anyone else hate the second I.J. because the heroine was an annoying wuss?
And Suzanne, what’s Serenity/Firefly? I’ve missed something!
Lisa G on 21 Nov 2009 at 12:55 pm #
I am totally into twilight. I have the bag and other things from the movie. I had Star Wars t-shirts when I was younger and Indiana Jones too. I am groupie at heart!!!
Karen Rose on 21 Nov 2009 at 1:17 pm #
Karen H, as a young tween I was a Mark Hamill fangirl.
Then I grew up and realized Harrison Ford was the best. My personal big crush as a girl was Shaun Cassidy. Ahhhh.
dbrown3400 on 21 Nov 2009 at 1:39 pm #
I don’t remember many crushes from movies growing up, but one from adulthood that strikes me is Kevin Costner as Crash Davis in Bull Durham. I enjoyed The Bodyguard and Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, but I’ve seen “Bull Durham” about thirty times. And yes, I had a poster. My faves were mostly from television.
Suzanne Enoch on 21 Nov 2009 at 2:43 pm #
“Firefly” is the TV series about space cowboys created by Joss Whedon. “Serenity” is the movie based on the series. If you haven’t seen one or the other, I just figured out what I’m giving you for Christmas.

When i was younger I remember falling in love with Patrick Dempsey in the movie Can’t Buy Me Love. It’s strange because I am not a big fan of his now, but he was so cute in that movie.
I also fell in love with Colin Farrell in the movie SWAT. He was so smokin’ hot in that movie! I also, can’t forget Johnny… and Captain Jack!
Sabrina Jeffries on 21 Nov 2009 at 5:45 pm #
I had a movie crush on Bill Pullman in While You Lay Sleeping. He fueled my fantasies for quite a while. Another one was Richard Chamberlain in The Slipper and the Rose. I loved that movie and him.
But mostly, like Madeline, my crushes were on pop stars–Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, James Taylor.
And I did have a short crush on a cover model, believe it or not (no, I’m not saying who he was). *G*
Claudia Dain on 21 Nov 2009 at 6:30 pm #
Nope, not a crush sort of girl…not unless I have a chance of nabbing them!
I was really crazy about Donovan—anyone remember him? But all I did was buy one of his albums. One. That’s the kind of fan I am.
Louisa Cornell on 21 Nov 2009 at 6:31 pm #
I was a HUGE Han Solo fan and had the t-shirt and nightshirt to prove it! And I remember having a poster of Chris Reeves as Superman on the wall of my dorm room in undergrad school.
My niece is a super in love fan of Johnny Depp! I scored MAJOR points when I got custody of the life-sized cardboard cutout of Captain Jack that was on display in the electronics dept at the Wal-Mart where I work. I won’t tell you the bribes I had to pay to get that sucker! I sent it home with my Mom and got a phone call a few hours later from a squealing niece who STILL thinks I am the best aunt of all time. My brother is horrified to have to see it in her room every day!
Of course I didn’t tell her I kept the one of him and Orlando Bloom together! It stands in my writing studio as we speak. My nephews and niece are now on a quest to find a life-sized cutout of Gerard Butler as Leonidas for me for Christmas. Love those kids.
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:07 pm #
Lisa G, that’s so cool that you enjoy your Movie Crushes! We all should. I have Christmas ornaments of my favorite Movie Crushes. That way I have a place for them without dusting. But you know, it would be COOL to have coffee mugs to express my Movie Crushes. Hmmm. I may have just added something to my Christmas list!
Ka-Rose, I wasn’t on Team Skywalker, but I have to admit he was cute.
I wonder what he’s doing now? Have you seen him in anything lately?
dbrown, I haven’t seen Bull Durham! I always wanted to, but haven’t. I should netflix it because so many people have mentioned how fabu it is.
Suzanne, squeeeee! A present! I haven’t seen either one but if you like it, I just know I will, too!
Karen Hawkins on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:20 pm #
Amy, Jim Street was a WONDERFUL character and I can see why you fell for him. SWAT is a great movie, but I wish they’d named it something else. It’s such a cheesy name for a pretty darn good movie. Not a great movie, but a good one.
Sabrina, Jack Callaghan won my heart from the very first second when we see his work book stepping out of his pick up truck. Right there, you know that HERE was the REAL prince. Gee, While You Were Sleeping is such a great movie!
As for the cover model … hmmmm. That’s a challenge. That’s a real challenge!
Louisa, I need to see this writing studio of yours! I bought a life-sized cutout of Edward for my stepdaughter’s movie party and I have to say … he looked pretty good!
I can see how a life-sized cutout could inspiring. Of course, Edward scared my dogs, though. One of them growled every time he walked by it.

Sorry I’m late to the party, life interrupted me this morning. But we have two new desks put together with our own little hands, and only one screw-up. My mad crush was James Shigeta from the time I saw him in Flower Drum Song. And I loved Robert Shaw too, beautifully rugged and twinkling eyes.
Janae on 21 Nov 2009 at 7:57 pm #
I’m really late – electricians over most of the day, but my entry has lights, finally. One of these days soon I’m getting an outlet in the middle of the floor to plug in my estate sale lamps behind my sofa . . .
Movie crushes – Harrison Ford as both Han Solo and Indiana Jones; Viggo as Aragorn.
Pesky on 21 Nov 2009 at 8:24 pm #
Karen that is just Kathy Bates level of creepiness. You gave her really, really, really good advice about not mailing it to the house.
Susan M on 21 Nov 2009 at 8:42 pm #
Confession…I was one of those girls at the midnight showing (and Friday night) in my Team Edward shirt and I’m 32!!! Can’t help it…I have a major crush on Edward. Now I don’t like Robert Pattinson on his own…only as Edward.
I’ve also had other movie crushes: Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You & A Knights Tale, Patrick Swayze in The Outsiders & Dirty Dancing, Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera, are just a few.

Did a Book-To-Movie party at the library, then walked over to the theater to see the movie. Was a lot of fun. Have done several pre-movie parties and the teens are great. Many come in costume and we usually have a trivia contest and sometimes act out scenes. It is a small town, so inside the theater the party continues with comments, screams, and wolf calls. All in fun and not really enough to disrupt the moving. I enjoyed the movie more going with the teens than I would have by myself at a bigger theater.
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

Gerard Butler in… well, really any role
he’s soooo gorgeous. And I agree with TrishD about loving a character rather than an actor — that’s me with Edward Cullen. definitely not Rob Pattinson. umm… I loooove Peter Facinelli in the Twilight movies, he makes a helluva hottie vampire. and I’m all about Johnny too <33
Melissa on 23 Nov 2009 at 4:29 pm #
I developed first on Orlando Bloom (but only as a blond elf) then as the series progress it was VIGGO all the way. Then there is Hugh Jackman no matter what he is in I could take him home..

I never had a movie crush on the level of Twihards until, well, Twilight. I’m a cougar, I know, but Rob’s got that special something that gets my juices flowing.
However, as a youngster, it wasn’t a movie crush, but a soap crush. Specifically A Martinez, aka Cruz Castillo, of Santa Barbara. I was totally the smitten kitten with pictures all around my room.

Mmm, when i was younger Leonardo Dicaprio was my utmost favorite! I had always thought Nicholas Cage was pretty cute, Tom Cruise before he became a weirdo, Captain Jack is delicious, Strider is mysterious-sexy, Daniel Tosh from Tosh.0 on Comedy Central is wicked, and of course there’s James Bond… Sigh.
