The Little Things

Next week in the US, everyone will meet together to eat huge amounts of food and watch football.  This is called Thanksgiving.images

Many will go around their table and ask their friends and/or relatives what they are thankful for.  What follows is usually the mention of big ticket items like jobs, family, health–all great things to be thankful for.

But today, I want us to be thankful for the little things.  For instance, my list of the little things in life that I am thankful for are:

1. Peanut M & Ms (or M&Ms with peanut butter, either way)

2. The sound of a loon drifting off the water

3. Flannel pajama bottoms

4. When little boy sweat smells like sunshine (haven’t smelled this in a while, but I remember it well)

5. Really good coffee (like Jamaican Blue Mountain)

Tell me, Goddesses, what little things are you thankful for?images-2

This is so sweet, Lori! I’m glad you did this blog today.

I’m thankful for so many of the big things, like you say, but the little things are what help bring joy to individual moments, I think.

I’m thankful for a hot cup of coffee on a brisk morning, delivered with a smile by my sweet DH.
    Chocolate, in any form.
The sound of the cranes calling to their family – sounds like jungle birds in the early morning (ackackackack, like that).
The soft hooting of the owl when I’m up writing all night – makes me feel like I’m not alone.
Friendship (although this is a pretty big thing)
Pot roast. (I love pot roast. It’s like the best home meal ever.)

Lots more, but that’s put a smile on my face for now. Hugs, Lori!

(PS – I don’t think I’ve ever smelled sunshine sweat. I’ve smelled, oh-you’ve-been-playing-outside sweat, which has it’s own bouquet.)

Lori, Castle is my absolutely favorite DILF. Seriously. I got this STUPID crush on him. I mean, really! I’m almost at the point of writing ♥ Rick Castle ♥ in my notebook. Ehhh… Seriously. The show’s perfect, HE is perfect. I’m more of a character person, than an actor person, but Nathan Fillion is so perfect I’m tempted to writing “Please, marry me.” on Twitter to him every single day.

Can you say Pathetic? (Capital P)

    ♥♥♥♥ Rick Castle & B ♥♥♥♥

  29. Amy Scott on 19 Nov 2009 at 8:43 am #

Can someone fill me in on Castle? What is it about and when and what station does it air on? I feel so left out, have I been living under a rock?

  30. LoriHandeland on 19 Nov 2009 at 8:47 am #

Hope that leg’s healing up quickly, Terri. Lots of TV and reading should help.

Lucky, lucky Lisa H!! Have fun at the movie!

Amy S–you can go here and find out all sorts of stuff
    http://castletv.net/

But basically Castle is about a mystery writer who teams up with a NY city cop to solve crimes. The thing that makes it different for me are the secondary characters, who are GRRREAT, and the banter between the two leads. Reminds me of Moonlighting.

My little old man, Jack the Cat, who likes to spoon, cuddle and tolerates my being gone a lot in return for canned food and head scratches.

My wonderful and amazing friends that make me laugh, humor my rather childlike glee at silly things and that can appreciate a lovely martini, wine and dinner.

My body that, when I get around to asking it, puts up with my pushing it to new goals. (of course, it gets me back by keeping a stranglehold on its excess padding.. but we will deal with that stubborn streak at some point hehe)

My passport that lets me explore this amazing world.

I am really thankful for the feeling of excitement when tackling a new project or coming up with a new idea.

and twinkle lights. They always make me smile and make everything look prettier at night all year long.

Oh, I love finding money in pockets, Alicia. It’s a mini present.

Aw, Jackie, that’s so sweet that your DH goes and gets you yard. I don’t think I could convince IV to do that. But maybe . . .

I have more stuff I’m thankful for:

    - I’m thankful I haven’t collapsed yet. I’m going by with virtually no sleep (a couple of hours every two or three days).

    - I’m thankful for my absolutely crazy and awesome professor and my super dedicated and inspiring who make it possible for me to attend classes when I just want to tell the world to eff off.

    - I’m thankful for the sweet classmates that say “I missed you yesterday.” or “You give the class life.”

    - I’m thankful there’s only two weeks left (tops, maybe less) and I’ll be on vacation till mid FEBRUARY!

    - I’ll BE very thankful if I managed to sleep some this afternoon, with no horrible dreams, because I’m exhausted.

    - Which brings me to: I’m thankful for some of the good dreams I have, for being about perfect and making me feel complete, even if not in this world. My dreams are very vivid, and real — I *feel* them. So, nightmares are horrible, but good dreams are GREAT

  42. TrishD on 19 Nov 2009 at 10:33 am #

    I am thankful for:

My daughter’s laughter, there’s no better sound in the world.
Comfy clothes, fuzzy slippers and warm blankets.
My chair where I cuddle up in my comfy clothes, warm blankets and read a good book.
    DVR and NCIS.
    George Clooney… sigh….
Antidepressants, I couldn’t function without them.
Caffeine Free Diet Coke and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, I couldn’t function without these either!
The internet, which has let me hook up with old friends and make new ones.
My pets, 3 cats and a black lab, who all think they should be able to sleep on the bed with us.

Lori, I just talk *a lot*. I never shut up. While some of my classmates appreciate it, especially during a boring class, the professors aren’t very fond of it. Except that I’m one of the best students, so, they just say: “I know you can talk and learn at the same time, but your classmates aren’t as skilled.”

Then I just start passing notes instead :)

  47. readerdiane on 19 Nov 2009 at 11:27 am #

My sister challenged me to find something to be thankful/grateful for every day leading up to Thanksgiving & post it on Facebook. When you do it every day it makes you think about your life.

    I love THANKSGIVING.

    I’m so thankful for……

    1. My DH–can’t imagine living without him.

    2. My kids. I don’t always like them (they’re teens) but I always love them. Last night, my oldest told me, “I love you, Mom,” when I dropped him off at one of his multiple after-school activities.

    3. My friends. We may not see each often as often as I’d like–life is sooo busy–but we stay in touch through email.

    4. Our 4 season porch. This time of year, when the days are short and not very sunny, I can be surrounded by the sky.

    5. Dark chocolate.

    6. My laptop and everything tht goes with it, including TGB.

    7. Books, especially those by the GODDESSES.

    8. Hawaii. I love knowing it’s there, even if I may not get there again for a while.

Oh yes Alicia and I have several pieces in my collection of dragons and such where the figures look like Gelflings. One is a princess with her pet dragon on a gold leash. I also have some Gelfling wizards. They are made by Steve Tunturi in Waldport, Oregon.

  63. evlqn on 19 Nov 2009 at 1:29 pm #

I just discovered Steve passed away a few years ago, that would explain why there are no new creations out.

  65. Paula on 19 Nov 2009 at 1:53 pm #

I (at this moment) am thankful for the peace and quiet that now reigns in my house!! Yup my boys are in bed going to sleep so therefore are no longer arguing or fighting!!

Other things that I am thankful for:

The love my boys give me and like Fiona says I don’t always like them but will always love them and I tell them this when they are being little monsters.

the cold crisp autumn mornings – not that we’ve got them at the moment wet and windy now.

    TGB having made friends here

The internet as without I wouldn’t have met all of you and thus wouldn’t have found so many wonderful books to read.

    Oh I like this topic.

1 Clean sheets is a top one, especially if they are still a little warm from the dryer.
2 Sunshine in general but especially in the months between November and April. In Seattle it can be a rarity.
3 Puppy kisses, doesn’t matter the breed, I love em
4 When I am cooking or cutting up veggies and my DH comes up behind me and slides his arms around my waist. Favorite thing ever. Maybe should be on the big list
5 Sleeping in on a rainy day, then crawling out of bed and onto the couch with a fire in the fireplace and a good book.
6 Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for my new family, I always start November with only 2-3 people coming and end up with 12-18. Love it!
7 Watching cheese melt. the scents, the knowledge of how tasty it will be
8 Slicing tomatoes with my new tomato knife. It runs right through them like butter.
9 Castle is definitely my favorite thing to watch each week. I agree they remind me of Maddy and David!
10 Toilet paper. sounds simple but I don’t ever want to have to live without it.
