It’s My Book Day!
Oct 27th 2009
Suzanne EnochOn Writing! & Suzanne Enoch
Well, today’s the day. I’m sending my darling child off to kindergarten for the first time, hoping the other children like her and that no one calls her stupid or boring or poorly written. Ahem.

Yes, The Care and Taming of a Rogue hits the stores today. You’d think after 24 previous books and two anthologies that I’d be used to this. I’ve had more “babies” than octomom. But I still get nervous. I still check my rankings on Amazon every hour. I still want everyone to go out and get my little darling during the first week of release so I can finally have that #1 New York Times bestseller. Not that I love the sweetie any less when she doesn’t get the highest grade in the class. We all just want our kids to be their best.
Anyway, as I finished up the Notorious Gentlemen series, I started considering what I wanted to do next. I’d just done the trio of army buddies, and before that, the quadrilolology of siblings. And then I saw this quote from Denis Diderot (1713-1784): “All the long-range expeditions have reared a new generation of nomadic savages…men who visit so many countries that they end by belonging to none…Amphibians who live on the surface of the waters.”
That got me started thinking about what happens to these rough-and-tumble explorers, men who risk their lives in foreign, hostile lands, AFTER they return to London and polite Society. It seemed to me that the only thing more frightening than a charging rhino would be an angry Society mama.
Then I came up with the Adventurers’ Club, a place for those wild men to find refuge in the middle of Mayfair. My first adventurer is Captain Sir Bennett Wolfe, just returned from a three-year expedition up the Congo River in Africa. During his absence he’s had his journals stolen and published under someone else’s name, lost his reputation, and been declared dead. Not a good way to begin a Season.
Did you read adventure books when you were a kid? And are you going to keep an eye out for The Care and Taming of a Rogue?

Hi girls, I’m back from my grandparents’ (and I’m arrogantly assuming that you noticed my absence, haha) and now I’m ill. Bah. Can barely crawl out of my bed atm. Hate that. Sorry for grumpling, but I wanted to share my pain with all of you. *g*
Strangely, I wasn’t that big a reader when I was a child. But I was very much into TV (it’s actually the other way round nowadays) and all kinds of series. My absolute fav (until today – I so wish they’d bring series like that old ones again instead of the trash you can see nowadays!) was a series based on Jules Verne’s “Around the world in 80 days” but with animals – Mr Fogg was a lion, for example. I loved this one so very much and, come to think about it, it was the beginning of my love for adventure stories. I like the suspense and not to know what comes next.
Suzie, I’m happy to report that from where I’m sitting, I can directly see TCATOFR. It’s still in its Amazon-box since it only just arrived, but I’m very much looking forward to starting it!

Suzanne, congratulations on your book. I hope it’s a huge success.
*hug* (I’m honest to the core, I hope this doesn’t bother you)
I’m sorry and kind of ashamed at my guts to post it here that I can’t read that kind of book to save my life. I’m 21. I like contemporary. Anything that happens before 1999 has me twitching my nose. Preferably containing suspense. Blood and guts thrillers are ideal, but I like romantic suspense almost just as much.
I *promise* it isn’t personal. And I promise to recommend your book to ALL my friends that like this kind of book, how does that sound?
Since I was a kid, I liked mystery books. I remember having this book when I was six or seven, which was called “The mystery of the lost yellow sock.” I used to read R.L. Stine’s books for children and then young teenagers. Then I escalated to Mary Higgins Clark and am still as… ehhh… close minded about what I read.
I’ll read a contemporary romantic comedy (comedy being the key word), but that’s as broad as I go.
Happy Book Release Day!

Oh oh oh!!!! I’m SO excited. You have no idea. I’m hoping I can convince my lazy self to bolt over to target today to pick up yours and a few other releases that i’ve been neglecting to pick up from the last week or so.
I LOVE adventure stories. I read them as a child, and I read them now. I also love adventure movies. (And to be perfectly honest, I like going ON adventures.)
I cannot wait to get your new baby in my hot little hands.

I don’t remember reading adventure books as a kid. Mostly Little House. But I love them now! My particular favorite is jungle books!
Bookstore is on my list for today, Suzie. Congrats on the new book.

Congrats, Suz!! I have a B&N gift card sitting in front of me right now, so there’s no excuse not to go out and pick up a copy after getting the kids on the bus and doing barn chores! I can’t wait! The story sounds wonderful!
I read all kinds of books as a child. I loved mystery and adventure and read lots of horse books too. One that I remember well was Hold the Rein Free. Good kid book!
Good luck to your little one!

Suzanne, at least this baby didn’t give you stretch marks and wake you up multiple times a night.
Can’t wait to pick it up as soon as I send my boss out of town later today.
Have a fun watching your meteoric rise up the NYTBL and the Amazon ranking.
I didn’t read adventure. Had a grammar school teacher who read Gulliver’s Travels to us. Each week we’d behave better to make sure we got the next installment.

Wow, Suzie, what a great premise for a series! I love it! I’m an Indiana Jones fan for sure, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading about adventurers. The book sounds great!
Pesky on 27 Oct 2009 at 7:26 am #
First: Of course I will buy your book.n Can’t wait to read it.
Second: I cut my teeth on The Count of Monte Christo and Edgar Rice Borroughs. I loved adventure books.
Julia London on 27 Oct 2009 at 7:35 am #
Well I am insanely jealous or your Adventure club series, and I LOVE that kind of book, so I am going to get out today and buy your book. I can’t wait! What a perfect escape from the CPE, who has been demanding a blaster for the last four days.
LauraR on 27 Oct 2009 at 8:27 am #
Downloaded the book last night. The only bad part of reading on the IPOD is the cover image – no setback!
I remember reading Edgar Rice Burroughs as well. Julia is living her adventure with the CPE.

The premise of this series is such a fantastic hook, I’m clicking over to Amazon the second I get finished typing this comment! Wow, can’t wait to read. What a unique and grabby idea!! Best of luck with release day!

I will be happy to add your book to my to be read stack. I even promise to not put it too far down but don’t tell any other Goddesses that I may be pushing their book to the side to read yours, let’s keep that our secret!
I can remember reading anything and everything I could get my hands on as a kid. Once I read every “kid” book in the house I moved onto my parents books. I read all of their Erma Bombeck books, they’re considered adventures right??
Suzanne Enoch on 27 Oct 2009 at 9:30 am #
Thanks, goddesses!
Fresh, no stretch marks, but all my babies wake me up during the night.*g* I always keep a writing pad in my nightstand, just in case.
I loved the Edgar Rice Burroughs books as a kid. Read all the Tarzan books and the John Carter of Mars books (btw, they’re making a movie of those – starring Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in the Wolverine movie).
Zane Grey, Louis L’amour – yep, read those, too.
Claudia Dain on 27 Oct 2009 at 9:34 am #
Oh, my gosh! This sounds FANTASTIC!!! What a spectacular idea for a series, Suzie. I am so eager to get my hands on this! Yay, YOU!
Adventure books…does Homer Price count?
I loved Homer Price and the donut machine!
Melanie on 27 Oct 2009 at 9:35 am #
Congrats on the new book, I will be looking for it for certain!!

I was reading on my ipod last night and suddenly saw the message from Fictionwise saying my download was complete. That meant your book was now in my hot little hands. I recently finished the Notorious Gentlemen series, which I enjoyed tremendously, so TCATOFR is a book I’ve really been waiting for.
And I also read all the Tarzan and John Carter books I could find when I was growing up. Great stuff!
Kathleen O on 27 Oct 2009 at 9:56 am #
I know your book will do well Susan…But i can see the need to watch over them like a good mother hen. The new series sounds great…
Madeline Hunter on 27 Oct 2009 at 10:35 am #
Congratulations on the new book release! What a great idea for a series, too.
evlqn on 27 Oct 2009 at 10:44 am #
Happy dance for you Suzanne! Another book for my TBR pile, which is getting higher and HIGHER! I hate being responsible and concentrating on doing homework! It sucks!
Edgar Rice Burroughs for me also with a splash of Jules Verne and a dollop of Zane Gray. If it was printed I tried to read it.
Karen on 27 Oct 2009 at 10:46 am #
Suzie – Just as soon as the cable man gets here (not Larry), I will be off to the bookstore to buy you book and others on my list.
Adventure books can be interesting and looking forward to yours, of course.
Karen Hawkins on 27 Oct 2009 at 10:48 am #
I adore adventure books. When I was a kid, I’d read all of the mystery/adventure books I could find. I only recently discovered the Amelia Peabody series — those are fabulous, btw. So yes, the new series sounds perfect!
YAY on release day, Suzanne! I just finished Julia London’s awesome book, A Courtesan’s Scandal (hot and sexy, btw — great read)m and I something adventure-set would be a perfect foil.
Can’t wait to get the Care and Taming of a Rogue! In fact, on my way out the door right now!
JudyPatooty on 27 Oct 2009 at 11:14 am #
I never was much for adventure stories unless you consider the Nancy Drew series to be “adventure.”
Congratulations on the new book, Suzanne! I just downloaded it to my Kindle and I look forward to reading it very soon!
Suzanne Enoch on 27 Oct 2009 at 11:31 am #
I still read everything I can get my hands on. My nephew and I took turns reading “Stone Fox” for his school reading, and I cried at the end. He looked at me and said, “Aunt Suz, it’s just a story.” I said, “I know, but it’s a good one. And it’s sad!” Sigh. *g*
JudyPatooty, I think Nancy Drew is an adventure. She’s always in danger and has to escape it, anyway.
kay on 27 Oct 2009 at 11:42 am #
Just ordered your book yesterday, should be delivered by tomorrow…can’t wait. While I was at it, I ordered A Courtesan’s Scandal by Julia London. My hands are rubbing together greedily.
Amy Scott on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:17 pm #
There is nothing I enjoy more after my kids go to bed than pouring myself a glass of wine and opening a new book… that’s what I will be doing this evening. I loved the NG series, and can’t wait for 8pm to roll around so I can start the new one!
Best of luck with the release!
Lisa G on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:27 pm #
Congradulations on your new book! I will be looking for it. I used to read Tom Sawyer, Box Car Kids, Nancy Drew and so many others. I used to get lost in books, finding adventures inside them. I even thought I was Tarzan when I was eight and tried to swing on vines! LOL! Good Luck with you book!
Angela on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:52 pm #
Congratulations on your new book! Heading to Borders tonight to pick up another book so I will also pick up yours. No such thing as too many books. I look forward to your next series especially if any of the heroes resemble Gerard Butler.
I didn’t read too many action books when I was younger unless you count Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.
They were the only ones that my family would let me read.
I did read books about animals, mainly horses.
Nicole Jordan on 27 Oct 2009 at 4:39 pm #
I read the Scarlet Pimpernel a bunch of times, does that count, Suzanne? And The Black Stallion and Tarzan and Kipling’s wolf stories and the wolf/sled dog writer with stories set in Alaska whose name totally escapes me now. Loved all those. And I’m sure I’ll love your book, too. Plan to hit B&N tomorrow!
Suzanne Enoch on 27 Oct 2009 at 4:46 pm #
Oh, The Black Stallion. I forgot about that one, Nicole. And Call of the Wild. Loved those, too.
jen on 28 Oct 2009 at 3:52 am #
I have to admit that I bought your book the minute it was avaliable (and have finished it already). I quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I sat down to read it, took a sip of juice, and then read the dedication. I blame you entirely for the fact that I shot orange juice out of my nose, pulp included. My mother says that wasn’t exactly what she had envisioned when she recomended vitamin C for my head cold.
Andrea on 28 Oct 2009 at 6:39 am #
Congratulations, Suzanne!! I’ll be celebrating by heading to my local B&N and picking up my own copy!
Angela on 28 Oct 2009 at 8:31 am #
Bought the book last night. Read the dedication. Agree totally with it.
Will read the book this weekend.
Congrats again!!
Suzanne Enoch on 28 Oct 2009 at 9:58 am #
LOL, Jen. You just made me spit out my diet dr. pepper. *g*

I lived on adventure books when I was a kid. Read a lot of boy’s books because those for girls were too tame. In high school, I was one of the guys. We would sit around planning expeditions to find Big Foot or Champ (Lake Champlain’s version of the Loch Ness monster). I seriously researched that stuff. Got my chance in a little way. Went overseas and traveled and explored. Climbed active volcanoes, melted my sneakers on one, canoed out to native villages to see their temples and the way they laid to rest their dead above ground, sat and listened to a young girl scream while she was possessed by demons, watched people walk barefoot over hot coals, and attended a teeth filing ceremony, to name a few. I had a lot more things on my list to do before I had to come home. My DH and I explore whenever we can. Not great earth shaking exploration, but a little adventure.
Your Adventurer’s Club series is just my cup of tea. Will be looking for them as they come out.

Hey Suzanne! I just finished reading TCATOAR and I absolutely loved it. I think I devoured it in like five hours. I’m curious as to who will be featured in the next book of the series. Jack? Nicholas? Olivia? I just googled it, but couldn’t find a summary anywhere, much to my dismay. I only managed to ferret out the title, A LADY’S GUIDE TO PROPER BEHAVIOR. Care to share a tiny little summary? ;p
