Really, you like that?
Sep 8th 2009
KimOn Writing!
That’s a question my husband asks me on a regular basis. Be it about shows on tv or food. I’ve got weird taste. What can I say? I make no excuses. LOL
My traveling persona loves sushi, oysters and quality cuts of steaks. Roughing it is a suite with an uncomfortable sofa. I don’t care what it cost (please don’t tell Verizon this!) I will not live without my high speed dsl. Working on my mom’s dial up is enough to make me want to down some draino.
My realistic, everyday self loves cheap Totinos pizzas, reality tv and Star magazine. Our car is twenty years old and our house isn’t in the best neighborhood. Yup, I’m a contradiction of terms.
To make me feel a little bit better about myself why don’t you share with us all!
What can’t you live without no matter what it costs?
What’s the cheapest, grossest (to others, of course!) food that you love?

Sorry, I’m so late getting this up. I forgot to click to publish!

I’m with you, Kim. In my house we have a saying–There IS no camping. At least not with Mom. Roughing it for me is no room service.
What can’t you live without no matter what it costs?
coffee. Do NOT get in my way in the morning or pay the price.
What’s the cheapest, grossest (to others, of course!) food that you love?
spaghetti. Just keep it comin’.

I like raw hot dogs.
There, I said it.
I’m looking at a tightening budget and must contemplate a) getting rid of the DVR and or b) cutting back the cable. However, I will never totally part with my cable. Nope. Ain’t gonna do it.
Pesky on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:22 am #
Every once in a while I crave Chef Boyarde Spaghetti and Meatballs and Ravioli. It’s gross, but I really want it when I want it.
I cannot live without my DSL. I’m with you.
toni mcgee causey on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:24 am #
DSL. I need to unplug more often in order to get work done, but man, the withdrawals!
We’ll just sit on the sofa together, eating Tostitos, watching us some Project Runway or SYTYCD or even HGTV’s whatever-they-call the new “star” show.
Snack-wise, gimme some Goldfish and I’m good. Or chocolate ice cream. Just not at the same time.
kay on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:24 am #
Cheapest, yes…grossest, maybe…radish sandwiches…love them, butter, radishes and hillbilly bread. Yum!
ladydawgfan on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:25 am #
I can’t live without pickled herring! Yummm!!! Especially on hardtak, Limpa, or Swedish Rye bread!! I also love (and gross family members out with my passion for) sushi, calimari, frogs legs, and crawfish (“You’re not actually eating that are you???”).
Another habit that I picked up while living in Mississippi is strawberry jam on my bacon, egg, and cheese bisquits. It’s a sweet vs salty thing, and the combo is delicious. However, my sister always looks at me like I sprouted a set of antlers when I eat this in front of her!!
terrio on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:26 am #
I love Chef Boyardee Raviolis. Nothing wrong with those.
I’ll join the reality TV couch. Though I’ll bring my hot dogs. And I’m Team Antonio.
Kim on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:28 am #
LOL! You guys are cracking me up. So far, I think all your food stuff is right up my alley. Nothing gross here!
I will never EVER give up my DVR. Seriously, I don’t know how people survive without one.

Raising young children has re-introduced me to a lot of cheap and bland foods. Tuna Helper, for instance. My eldest loves it, and she hates everything – so guess what. We eat a lot of Tuna Helper.
Oh, and here’s something I buy a few times a year and always wonder why the heck I did so afterwards: those cheap little chocolate pudding “pies” they sell at the grocery store for 40 cents. I don’t know what it is, but I just crave them every so often.
I could live without cable easy – but not my broadband internet.
Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:36 am #
Maid service. The ONLY time I did without maid service was when hubby was without a job and we were living on savings. If we have ANY money at all, I hire a maid service to clean my house, even if it’s only every two weeks. I hate, loathe, and despise cleaning. Fortunately, hubby doesn’t mind doing it, so he takes up the slack, but it’s worth every penny to have maid service to me.
Meanwhile, one of my favorite meals of all time (which I have rarely since the surgery) is Tostitos and velveeta cheese dip. That’s about as cheap as you get!
Kim on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:39 am #
Tessa-I refuse to eat Tuna Helper anymore. I like it but its just so bad for me. Those cheesy noodles though… And I love those pudding pies!
Sabrina-I’m so jealous! I want a maid. Once in a while I let my mom come clean my house but I hate to ask her.

I can’t live without great shoes that are well made. I’m addicted. I just ordered 4 more pairs last week, and 2 of them are duplicates of a shoe I already have. I could live in a refrigerator box and I’d still have expensive shoes.
Gross food – any sort of chicken nugget or hot dog. I don’t care about all the gross stories of how they are made. They taste like a heart attack and I crave them.
Misty Wright on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:42 am #
I can’t live without books. I have to have them. Doesn’t matter that I have tons of them littering the house, I always come out of the bookstore with at least one.
Good thing my Hubby knows my addiction and doesn’t mind.
Gross thing…those little burritos(that remind me of hot pockets). Sometimes they can be cold or lava hot. LOL. Nothing wrong with what everyone said here. I like those things too!
MarcAntonia on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:45 am #
As far as things I can’t live without: I’m pretty picky about my cell phone. Its really hard for me to go without it, even for a few hours. And I want to have one that is good to me, won’t randomly crash, and even more, is a smartphone so I can keep everything running (oh, and keep myself semi organized.)
For gross food, I love eating canned tuna, by itself. My roommates gag when I eat it, but its only $0.50. Also, I love hamburger (or tuna) helper with no meat. Its cheap, and I can eat at least 2 meals off it. lol
Claudia Dain on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:49 am #
A good haircut. Seriously. When we were starving, living on $200 a month for food, I was paying $100 every two months for a great haircut.
okie on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:58 am #
I CAN”T live without my laptop! no way, no how.
As a southerner living out west, I have come to love sushi. My family back home ewws and shudders at the thought of eating raw fish. LOL
Erica Ridley on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:03 pm #
Can’t live without: Internet access on my blackberry, even if I have to pay international roaming. I can’t unplug without breaking out in hives!
I eat: pretty much anything, provided it’s vegetarian. Which, besides the normal stuff everyone eats, also includes any number of fake meats (notdogs, vegiburgers, fakon strips), any kind of tofu (but my fave is drowned in pad thai), and any random vegetables from anywhere in the world, even if I have no idea what they’re called. Yum!
SuzyQ on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:09 pm #
I can’t live without my camera. I am always taking pictures.
As for food, well I know I’m gonna make a lot of your cringe, but I actually like Spam.
Lisa H on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:09 pm #
What can’t you live without no matter what it costs? My roots being done. My natural hair is dark brown and silver, and I like it to be beigey blonde. It’s worth it to me to have it done.
What’s the cheapest, grossest (to others, of course!) food that you love? McDonalds and Coke. I know McD’s is very unhealthy, but for $$1.00 I can get a double cheeseburger and life is good. I need my 2-3 Cokes a day, and even if they double in price, I will not give up this indulgence.
Kim on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:10 pm #
Claudia-you do not pay that much for a hair cut!! I cringe to spend $20.
Erica-you like tofu? I tried it once in a hot n sour soup. I didn’t love it.
JudyPatooty on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:14 pm #
I gladly pay the big bucks for high-speed Internet service. I cannot imagine not having it!
My favorite cheap eats? Kraft macaroni & cheese dinner. I know how to make a great from-scratch mac & cheese, but there’s nothing like the blue box (and even the store-brand version of the blue box, which is even cheaper!)
Freshechelle on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:22 pm #
Kim, I totally get Claudia spending that for a cut. I’ve done the same with no regrets (I’ve paid more but get it done less often). When your hair is your feature you like best, you’ve got take good care of it.
Indulge yourself Kim, come to the dark side of pampering yourself. We’ll just start with a little blow out….
Pesky on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:28 pm #
*Thumbs up on the haircut* I cut back on my mani’s and pedi’s when the bills get high. However, a good haircut makes you feel so much better.
Suzanne Enoch on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:29 pm #
Ritz crackers with peanut butter and pickles on top (dill or bread & butter). Yum.
Deb Marlowe on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:43 pm #
Cheap food I can’t live without: Skippy Peanut butter. Yum. Tastes like home. I don’t eat it very often anymore, but seriously, when I’m having a bad day, it’s an easy little indulgence. Now I eat it on celery and tell myself it’s a *little* healthy.
I’m with the hair crowd. Must color my hair. I’m too young to look like my Grandma–although she looked great once she was totally grey, so I’ll consider that down the road.
Janga on 08 Sep 2009 at 12:46 pm #
I’d hate to give up DSL and TiVo, but I’d surrender both rather than give up my books.
The cheapest food I love–banana sandwiches. What can I say? It’s a Southern thing. They’re a nostalgic delight. Alan Jackson likes them too.
Kim, I hear some people don’t like nutella. LOL!
TrishD on 08 Sep 2009 at 1:09 pm #
I’m joining the can’t live without my books camp! They make me happy and I would give up my cell phone, DVR, cable to keep my books. I’m sure I could sell them all and get a few months worth of mortgage payments but just not worth it. What good is a house without books??
The cheapest food I love? Instant rice with cream of mushroom soup. Yummy!
Tanya on 08 Sep 2009 at 1:16 pm #
Something I can’t live without: Books – seriously, I have a problem.
Gross food: (There are so many nasty things I like to eat I’m surprised I don’t weigh 1000lbs)! My favorite is probably McDonald’s…. or hot dogs…. anything with LOTS of salt. Yum…. Now I’m hungry. Thanks a lot Kim! Haha
Becky on 08 Sep 2009 at 1:31 pm #
What I cannot [and refuse] to live without: Well, books, obviously. Just last night I ran out to Borders cuz I got a cupon. “Don’t those come around all the time?” asked someone. I just looked at them and said something to the effect of, “Yeah….what’s your point?” Movies are another big one. The $5 bin at Walmart is my best friend….or worst nightmare, depending on the way you want to see things. Also, I sort of resent store brand things. Not all of them, but some. Certain things should not be left to the store brand! Use the name brand you can trust!
Gross food: Well, I do love my fast food, there’s no doubt about that. I also love something that we make at our house and, for lack of a more creative name, it’s called Barf Dip. It’s a block of cream cheese and a can of chilli. Looks disgusting, tastes amazing. You’d think by now we’d have named it something better, but my big brother thought it up, and since he’s the only boy, he’s a bit idolized. Oh well. =)

I could eat my weight in Jeno’s Pizza Rolls. I have an addiction to reality tv and autopsy shows.
Archer on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:04 pm #
I like British food. Most people cringe when I say that.
So far nothing anybody wrote sounds gross
I don’t think I could live w/o my ipaq. Its my connection to the world and I read ebooks on it EVERYWHERE.
Kim on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:07 pm #
Janga-LMAO! Naughty girl.
Rachel-please tell me you don’t eat pizza rolls while you’re watching autopsy shows.
Karen Hawkins Jackman on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:12 pm #
Ahhhhh! I am among my people. I can feel it!
I can’t live without my smartphone. I need my phone all of the time and I need internet all of the time. Need. Not just want.
As for cheapness, sometimes I crave good, old-fashioned KFC original recipe. Also in the cheap category, I refuse to buy a new car. I drove my used 96 Jeep until it died with 196,000 miles on it
I miss my Jeep.
TinaLouiseF on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:12 pm #
I rarely make myself good meals.
Today, since my arm is causing me pain and I didn’t go to work, I’m making mac & cheese to eat my pills with.
When I was in college, I made mac & cheese extra runny and added bits of bread.
Margaret on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:16 pm #
Got to have my broadband high-priced Internet. I can watch tv there.
My favorite cheap, gross food a Jif peanut butter and Kraft mayonnaise sandwich with a slice of pickle on the side.
Margaret on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:17 pm #
Wait a minit here! Karen Hawkins Jackman? Something you want to share, KH?
Lisa H on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:30 pm #
I can’t live without my books! How could I have forgotten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judy F on 08 Sep 2009 at 2:33 pm #
I saw that too Margaret. Spill girlie.
I can’t live without Advil cold and sinus. Its the only thing that works for me.
Cheap grose food. Chili cheese hotdog.
Paula on 08 Sep 2009 at 3:02 pm #
Archer, why do most people cringe when you say you like british food??
I am British and I love most food.
I too will have to join the ‘can’t live without books’ camp. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I also would have trouble without my computer for too long!!
the weirdest food I have ever eaten is a chees and strawberry jam sandwich when I was little it totally freaked my Dad out! I also have eaten sprats which was Dads speciality tea on a saturday. Sprats are a small fish now I think Yuk as children none of us was keen on them.
Tanya on 08 Sep 2009 at 3:06 pm #
I had the BEST Indian food of my life in England! Yummy… I wish we had more Indian places around here to eat.
Judy F on 08 Sep 2009 at 3:11 pm #
Books of course, Ac in the summer.
I am willing to shell out $$ for my highlights.
Julia London on 08 Sep 2009 at 3:18 pm #
I can’t live without chocolate or, like Judy F, AC in the summer. I also shell out for professional hair care.
The grossest, cheapest thing I eat is probably fish sticks. I can’t help it, I still love them as much as I did as a kid.
Karen Hawkins Jackman on 08 Sep 2009 at 3:41 pm #
OMargaret, I am just reminding certain people (Claudia) that Hugh Jackman is mine, all mine…. Bwhahaha! Er, sorry. Got carried away.

Have your tried those Totinos Mexician pizza’s they are awesome. I can’t find them around here anymore. I also like hot dogs, and balogna, but hubby want touch neither one of these.
Karen Rose on 08 Sep 2009 at 4:16 pm #
I think my hairdresser. I love my hair. Can’t say that about anything else on me, so I pamper my hair!
I like British food, too, Paula. All kinds. Except kidney pie. That was a little … well, nasty. Sorry
Hubby tried haggis. Said he’d rather eat his own foot next time.
I’ve had blood sausage in Ireland. Not bad, if you can get past the name.
Won’t eat sushi, curry. I am rather picky. But I am the woman who ate a live fish once to not embarrass my host, so I’m done with food I don’t like.
Michelle B on 08 Sep 2009 at 4:18 pm #
Can’t live without my Channel #5 cologne or Clinique eye cream. I’m in the expensive hair camp as well. Any stylist can color it, but I need someone who can really cut well to handle my hair. I’m moving in a month and I am not looking forward to finding a new stylist. (or dentist, mechanic, dog groomer, dry cleaner, ect)
I love creamcheese and jelly sandwiches. My Mom turned me onto them when I was little.
Kim on 08 Sep 2009 at 4:44 pm #
You guys are killing me with the haircare. I just this year started getting more than one haircut a year. And I completely slurged on a perm for RWA. That was $50 and my husband had to force me to do it.
For all you hot dog eaters. Are they at least Hebrew Nation? Those are THE best hot dogs. I refuse to eat any other.
LauraR on 08 Sep 2009 at 5:04 pm #
oh yeah, can’t live without AC in the summer. No matter what it costs! Gave up the satellite tv. Will not give up dsl, even though I’m in front of a computer all day long.
Cheap food I love? Stouffer’s mac & cheese…yum! mayonnaise and tomato sandwiches
Gross food? sweetbreads
Rachel Gibson on 08 Sep 2009 at 5:53 pm #
Kim,
I don’t eat pizza rolls because I am an addict, but if I did, I’d eat them while watching autopsy shows. No problem–oThe only time it bothered me was the one time I was eating lasagna. I had to turn the channel.

I’m the pickiest eater on Earth. Like, ever! Everyone says I’m super spoiled. I’ll spend a stupid amount of money in a fancy restaurant I like (usually my parent’s money — I have an allowance
). I can’t live, obviously, without computer with internet (and NOT dial-up. I had no idea people still used that), cable, DVR, a car…
I’m trying to remember something cheap and gross I like, but I can remember anything specific right now. However, I’m often hearing things like: “For someone who’s so picky, this sure is cheap/gross”.
Freshechelle on 08 Sep 2009 at 6:26 pm #
Speaking of TV and food not mixing: Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (sp?), the dude responsible for the first WTC bombing in 93? His cloudy, bulging cataract eye always came on TV during breakfast.
Kerri on 08 Sep 2009 at 7:44 pm #
Add me as another on the expensive haircut bandwagon! A good cut lasts longer than a bad one, and it makes you feel good about yourself, too!
For my food, I think I’d have to say fried bologna sandwiches – you fry the bologna in a nice gob of butter, then rub the pieces of bread in the crispy butter pan before adding the bologna. Add some super salty potato chips and it’s perfect! Don’t tell my arteries, though!
Patricia Barraclough on 08 Sep 2009 at 8:18 pm #
The food – you really don’t want to know. I was in the Peace Corps and ate some different stuff that most in this country wouldn’t even consider. Some of it I really liked. (pig intestines cooked with pig blood, vinegar and hot peppers. Sounds gross and would only eat it if I was sure of the person who cooked it. Very rich and not something you would want every day.)
Oh, just reread the question – cheap and gross. We grind up bologna and dill pickles, add mustard and mayonnaise for a sandwich spread. It is great and cheap. We were a family with six children and on weekends when the cousins came over there were often 15 kids plus the adults. This was always a favorite.
What could I not live without? BOOKS. My husband is very tolerant. I have over twenty over-full bookcases and boxes of books waiting for me and I still buy more. Plus I work at a library. I’m a complete addict.
Archer on 08 Sep 2009 at 10:18 pm #
Paula,
I think it gets its bad rep from movies. They always talk about it being bad or scare people off with things like liver pie. They never talk about the other pies, or pastries, or pasties, or stew, or bangers and mash, or fish n chips (best I’ve had is in London)…
Archer on 08 Sep 2009 at 10:44 pm #
ooh and don’t forget the sesame seed bread yumm
nancyg on 08 Sep 2009 at 11:59 pm #
ok – I’m late getting to the party….it was a long weekend.
working on a 5th grade student council poster while she’s sleeping (who knew I actually ran out of posterboard while I was at the high school open house? bad mommy, bad, bad!)
Things I can’t live without, by nancyg
Tivo – don’t know where it was all my life
iPhone – yeah, I know, there’s an app for that!
KitchenAid mixer
the Coach store – yes, they send me annual Christmas cards
hair stylist – she’s been cutting my hair for 18 yrs, putting “natural” color in for 10, don’t know what I’d do if she ever retires…
red wine
I thought I couldn’t live without my maids every 2 wks, but after DD #1 went to college (cutbacks); yes I can!
bad for you food?
chips & queso (melted cheese dip)
fried pickles & okra
BBQ potato chips
Kraft macaroni & cheese
port wine cheese & crackers
ALL hot dogs – chili cheese dogs w/red onions; mustard & sauerkraut at a game; bagel or pretzel dogs
warm diet coke – grosses everyone out when I pop a tab straight from the 12-pack
pizza – any way, shape, or form – rolls, pies, frozen, Red Baron french bread – you name it!

Well lets’s see… I coulld never stopped buying romance novels let’s be honest… Also I can’t imagine leaving without internet, grrr no WAY !!
As for food, well bread and cheese are two of my favorite thing. I could live on them.
And living without chocolate… impossible
J Perry Stone on 09 Sep 2009 at 10:21 am #
I can cut my own hair, I like Walmart make-up, I don’t like people touching my toes so there goes pedicures.
Actually, I might be the cheapest person on earth.
I can’t, however, go without Parmesan cheese. I know it smells like cat throw-up, but I really need it. I also can’t live without Havarti, some kind of Pinot (although my trader joes taste-bud twin hooks me up with cheap ones), and I’m with Erica. My freezer is full of veggie meat.
Morningstar Farms anything. And they scare me because they’re so expensive.
Paula on 09 Sep 2009 at 3:55 pm #
