The Soundtrack of My Life
Aug 29th 2009
Sabrina JeffriesMy Life As A Plebe & Sabrina Jeffries
Okay, so I guess you’ve figured out in this two-parter post that I like music a bit. I own over 400 CDs, not counting stuff on Itunes. But I’ve discovered that not everyone has a stereo in every room, or plays music while doing just about anything.
I’m so music-focused that lately I’ve been putting together soundtracks for writing. They’re mostly taken from soundtrack and instrumental Celtic music (entitled “Happy,” “Dramatic,” “Pensive,” “Dance,” and “Love Scene”). Then there are groups of book-specific songs, which I listen to while “warming up” to write (i.e., playing a few games of freecell). For Wed Him Before You Bed Him, it was Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” Sugababes’ “Too Lost in You,” and other assorted songs. For Stoneville’s book, it was Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life,” Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing,” The Pointer Sisters’ “Fire,” among others.
So here’s a short quiz to find out how music-obsessed you are.
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
- Surfing the net
- Bathing
- Making love (if that’s too personal a question, skip it–I’m just nosy)
- Writing (if you’re a writer)
- Relaxing
- Cooking
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?

E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
Everyone who answers will be entered in a drawing to win an autographed copy of the recent reissue of my book, The Forbidden Lord!

I’m not much of a music person. Everyone thinks I’m weird because of that. Maybe I was wired wrong, but, music, to me, it’s mostly just noise. I go through phases, some of which I listen to music more often than others (often usually equals once a week, not often once every three weeks). In my daily life, the only activity I regularly listen to music while performing is driving, and only because there isn’t much else I can do while driving that won’t endanger my (and someone else’s) life. But I’ll answer anyway.
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
1. Surfing the net — Rarely. But it happens sometimes.
2. Bathing — Doesn’t happen often, but I’m not against it. It’s like driving. There isn’t much else I can do.
3. Making love — Don’t care! It’s not like I’ll be paying attention to the music.
4. Writing — No way, can’t focus. The noise gets in the way.
5. Relaxing — Naaah. I’ll have a book instead.
6. Cooking — Maybe, if there isn’t anyone else around for me to talk to.

B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
Like, 20? Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. I told you, I’m not a music person. Not even a little bit.
C) Do you use iTunes or something like it?
Yup, I do. Though, I have an iPod that holds about 10,000 songs and I have less than 200 songs in it.
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Some songs remind me of certain people, but it’s not like it’s our song.
E) How many music players (iPod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
Well, does the computer count? If so, there are four. Computer, laptop, iPod and a stereo I forgot I owned till the other day.
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
Two. But I’m seriously considering a third.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
1. Crazy, by Meredith Brooks
2. B*tch, by Meredith brooks
3. Just My Imagination, by The Cranberries (the *only* band I really, truly, completely like, hence the 3rd concert I’m considering — they’ll be playing together again)
4. Breathe, by Anna Nalick
5. It’s Amazing, Jem

A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
Writing: Music sometimes inspires a story idea, but rarely listen to it while I’m writing. Singing along with the music disturbs my writing flow.
Relaxing, only if I am too tired to read.
B) I own tons of CD’s, but I have the 1400 songs I like to listen to downloaded on my computer.
C) I use Media Player to listen to the music on my computer. I almost never download from the internet.
D) No special songs
E) In my family there are at least 20 music playing devices.
F) Cheap Trick, Hall & Oates, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Beach Boys, Olivia Newton John, Randy Travis, and John Denver. I may have missed one or two, but that makes 8-10 live concerts.
G) There is only one song on the soundtrack to my life. “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Ha.”

G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
Working for a living–Huey Lewis
Take this Job and shove it
Only the good die young Billy Joel

Fun post today, Sabrina!
A) All of the above! I’m a music person. Something is always playing, ESPECIALLY when I’m writing.
B) In truth, I don’t own too many. I have a lot of copies and mixes of cds.
C) I use itunes…..and have 10 whole days worth of songs, and it’s growing daily.
D) Well, my sister and I have It’s Rainin Men, and my best friend and I have about 50 songs for ourselves.
E) Two. Ipod and a cd player.
F) 2, but I’ve been to probably 10 musicals.
G) Single Ladies by Beyonce, Have You Ever Been In Love by Celine Dion, Livin On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, So She Dances by Josh Groban, You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift….unless you wanted the classical version of my soundtrack, which I will spare you from. =)

I should probably answer my own quiz, huh?
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
Everything!
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
I really should count them. I suspect that together, Hubby and I have about 1000. I know I have about 4000 songs on my Itunes, and that represents only part of my library, plus things I’ve downloaded. In any case–lots of music!
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
Itunes
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Oddly enough, no. There’s too many. We do have certain albums we both like, though.
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
If you count the computers that have Itunes, 9
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
9 or so. I tend to agree that most bands don’t sound as good live.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
Carole King’s “Bitter with the Sweet,” Tracy Chapman’s “All that You Have Is Your Soul,” Carly Simon’s “Life is Eternal,” Warren Zevon’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” Tori Amos’s “Icicle,” and Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance.”

A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
–All of the Above!!
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
–Too many!! Rough estimate — a couple of hundred.
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
–ITunes. Love it!
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
–The song my (late) husband and I danced to at our wedding was Etta James’ At Last.
–There is also a song by Buckcherry that he would sing to me. Open My Eyes. It’s beautiful.
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
–4
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
–Only one and that was when I was in high school.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
–Open My Eyes, Buckcherry
–Memories, Within Temptation
–Rock DJ, Robbie Williams
–(You’re The) Devil In Disguise, Elvis Presley
–Paralyzer, Finger Eleven
It’s a wierd collection of songs, I admit, but this was harder than I thought! Good thing these are only five of the songs that would be in my soundtrack.
The actual soundtrack would have to be much longer!
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 8:13 am #
Archer, I agree–that cover model does look at lot like Patrick Dempsey (who’s the guy in my head for my second hero in the new series, Stoneville’s brother Jarret).
B, I like that song, “B*tch”, too. In fact, I just downloaded it, thanks to you!
Freedom Writer, I can’t write to vocal music, only instrumental. But it serves as a sort of soundtrack for the scene and gets me in the mood. Sounds to me like you’re a music lover!
JudyF, I like “Only the Good Die Young,” too. I’m a big Billy Joel fan.
Becky, classical is fine by me. I have tons of it! My fave of all time in classical is Beethoven’s Ninth. I think that piece of music is pure perfection.
LaurieG, are you like my husband, who won’t use Itunes or any mp3 player because he can hear the difference?
crp, clearly you are NOT a music person, but I know you’re not alone. I have lots of friends who really aren’t into music.
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 8:15 am #
Meg, my soundtrack would have to be longer, too. Notice I snuck an extra song in there? One of my friends is a big lover of Robbie Williams. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of his music, though.

A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
I do all of that, however, it’s rarely me who puts the music on. DH is hooked on music, often I like the quiet. I get distracted by music easily.
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
I have a lot. Probably close to 100 showtunes albums, then countless various types on my computer. A lot is celtic, and classic rock.
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
Itunes. Woo!
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Somehow, “Here comes the sun” turned into our song.
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
DH and I have an ipod each. I give my old ipods to my dad, so i don’t have extras around.
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
too many to count.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
oh man. I have no freaking idea. i rarely listen to the meaning of songs. usually just the sound of the music.
Julia London on 29 Aug 2009 at 8:44 am #
You forgot working out or driving. Those are the two times I must have music. I don’t listen to it when working and i don’t cook, so…
I can’t listen to music and work. I get too distracted by the lyrics. I have to focus on what I am writing.
I probably have around 150 cds, but in the last ten years, most of my music has been downloads. I make my own cds (they never work very long
) or load it up on some mp3 device. We have five iPods of varying sizes and capabilities.
I’ve been to many concerts. I go at least twice a year to hear the symphony.
Can’t make a soundtrack for my life — it would have to change on a weekly basis, LOL
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 8:50 am #
Julia, I did forget working out (walking is, oddly enough, the one time I DON’T listen to music, because that’s when I think through what I’m going to write, but I used to walk to music). I didn’t include driving on purpose because I figured pretty much everyone listens to music while driving. I suppose that might be an incorrect assumption, though.
I do have a lot of downloads, but hubby believes in CDs, so we have a mix.
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 8:52 am #
Cail, I listen to both music and lyrics, but some songs I like for one, some for the other, and rarely, some for both.

A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
All of the above – I sometimes think I have ADD because its impossible for me to do one task (like cooking etc) without having something else creating noise ie the tv or music, or even combining the two – music on tv!
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
Lots – too many to count but I guess about 200?
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
Itunes all the way
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Lightening crashes by live (My sister and I)
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
three – seems excessive now I think about it
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
too many to count.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
1. Not ready to make nice – dixie chicks
2. Fix you – cold play
3. These days – powderfinger
4. Hey ya – Outcast
5. Suck my kiss – red hot chilli pepers

LOL
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
No idea. Tons.
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
iTunes
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Everything I Do (I Do It For You) by Bryan Adams, from the movie Robin Hood, was sung at our wedding.
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
4
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
Oh sheesh, coffee work faster…Hm. I’ll take a wild stab at it and guess 10?

Redneck Woman – Gretchen Wilson (my whole life, right there, in one song – LOL)
Inside the Electric Circus – WASP
Blood Runs Cold – Def Leppard
Skin Crawl – Man-Raze
Home Sweet Home – Motley Crue
Don’t know how autobiographical those are, but…There ya go.
Madeline Hunter on 29 Aug 2009 at 9:30 am #
The oddest thing happened when I got married. DH sort of took over the music. It was not planned, it just happened. So he has bought hundreds of CDs. Hundreds. I have bought almost none, since I can find things to listen to in those hundreds.
I think this happened because he is one of those people who always has music playing, and I am the sort of person to spend the day in silence. I don’t dislike music, I just don’t pop a CD in automatically. I don’t listen to music while I write, for example. I do listen in the car. Or when I cook. But I find it distracting if I have something else to do with my brain. Or that other thing absorbs me and I don’t hear the music.
I have a lot of memories attached to music though. Any soundtrack would probably involve those songs, rather than songs that sort of tell the story of the actual things that happened in my life.
Pesky on 29 Aug 2009 at 9:44 am #
I’m pretty sure I’m obsessed:
a. All of the above.
b. Over 500
c. Itunes rock!
d. Current man friend “Feels Like Home” by Bonnie Raitt
e. Personally, Ipod, Computer w/ speakers, CD Player.
f. Hmmmmm…20+?
g. Soundtrack:
Aint Nothing Wrong with That – Robert Randolph and The Family Band (Personal Philosophy)
Life In A Northern Town – The Dream Academy (Life in a Small Town)
If I Ever Leave This World Alive – Flogging Molly (The Friendships I’ve Made)
Check Yes Juliet – We The Kings (The Feeling of Young Love)
Moondance – Van Morrison (The Feeling of Adult Love)
There are many more…life should have a soundtrack…

I’ve never listened to music when I write. Have always needed complete silence. But I may have to start as it’s gotten so loud at my house sometimes, I can’t concentrate. I’m hoping that some nice ballad-y music without lyrics will help.
Otherwise I listen to music in the car and sometimes I’ll put on the easy listening station on the TV if I can’t sleep. That’s about it for me.
SheridanLA on 29 Aug 2009 at 10:27 am #
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
All of the above. I have some sort of music playing 90% of the time. I don’t watch TV, I listen to music.
B) I have not really counted.. but quite a few hundred (all in the computer now)
C) iTunes
D) Nothing in particular, but there are certain songs that make me think of specific people.
E) ipod, ipod shuffle, iphone, stereo in the living room that my computer is rigged to to play music
F) 30? I used to go to them all the time, but not as much anymore – maybe one or two a year now.. though I am going to the Hollywood Bowl more and more now that I have a Bowl buddy again.
G) I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – Aerosmith
The Story – Brandi Carlile
Earthquakes and Sharks – Brandston
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper
Don’t Fence Me In – David Byrne (tribute to Cole Porter)
Becky on 29 Aug 2009 at 10:45 am #
Sabrina, I LOVE Beethoven’s 9th. I’m also a big fan of Moonlight Sonata, and lately I’ve been on a Vivaldi kick. But I found a whole series of cds at a friend’s house that were Classical Relaxation arrangements and I’m compeltely addicted.
ericaleigh on 29 Aug 2009 at 11:10 am #
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
.
Most everything depending on my mood. I haven’t really tried to write and listen to music at the same time. I can multi-task but when I listen to music there’s not as much thinking going on because I’m usually singing along. I might be able to do some nice orchestral music, but I usually like quite when I write (easier to hear all the voices and thoughts that way
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
I own over 200 CD’s and have 12,000 + songs on iTunes. I spent a good portion of last year uploading all my CDs to iTunes. I’ve more recently gone back and tried to get all the album art work right. I’ve been on “m” for a while now.
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
Yes. I like iTunes but it has some issues that frustrate the crap out of me.
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
No, but when I get a hubby or boyfriend its a must.
ericaleigh on 29 Aug 2009 at 11:21 am #
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
3 stereos in the house, but most of them don’t function fully. My mom still uses cassette tapes and luckily those functions still work on the stereos. 3 iPod/MP3 players. And a couple of portable CD players. Yikes, we need to consolidate and get some stuff that works. (We have the same issue with DVD palyers right now, about 3 in the house and not one works!)
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
3 – John Denver, Lilith Fair and Foo Fighters. I hate going to concerts, too many people, bad acoustics and too hot! I always leave feeling over stimulated and claustrophobic.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
This is the current list and it definitely changes with what’s going on in my life.
Watch Me Shine by Joanna Pacitti
It Happens by Sugarland
If Today Was Your Last Day by Nickelback
Gotta Be Somebody by Nickelback
You Found Me by The Fray
Break Me Out by The Rescues
ericaleigh on 29 Aug 2009 at 11:27 am #
Since we’re talking about music, there’s this great string quartet that does covers of popular music. Group is called Vitamin String Quartet. If you like string music this is an interesting way to listen to it. Some of their more recent stuff is the covers of Paramore and Twilight, Linkin Park, Radio Head, Foo Fighters, Metallica. They have 14 pages of records on their website http://www.vitaminstringquartet.com. Its pretty fun to listen and try to figure out which song.

A. ALL of them actually. I love music too and I added #7
Surfing the net
Bathing
Making love – definitely
Writing – letters, emails, work and I like to write stories for my friends and family
Relaxing
Cooking
At the Beach, family cookouts, playing with the kids or having a nice dinner with the family
working out
B. How many do you own? not many, I usually put everything on my MP3
C. Do you use Itunes? I’ve never used Itunes and it depends, I usually borrow friends and families CD and burn them or download from like Amazon.
D. Do you have a “song” that’s just yours? No, not really. I hear songs that remind me of someone and whenever I hear the song I like of them and most of the time it’s a comfort like they are right there with me. Music will remind me of a smell or favorite time of my life, sometimes great sadness too but the music transports me back.
E. How many music players? 8
F. How many live concerts have you been to in your life? too many to remember
G. soundtrack for your life:
Mi Mancherai by Josh Groban; Mad Season by Matchbox 20 (life is mad!); Amazing Grace; Scooby Doo Theme song (I’m a kid at heart) & Dare to Live Andrea Bocelli
Karen Rose on 29 Aug 2009 at 12:08 pm #
Sabrina, I don’t listen to a lot of music lately. In the past, I’d listen in the car and a few of my books have had soundtracks – Aerosmith and Josh Groban and Barry Manilow, mainly.
A) None of those – those are all silent activities. And I don’t cook – I’ve been banned from the kitchen for cursing at the pots and pans. I do drive and exercise to music, though.
B) Own 6 albums, but I don’t know where they are.
C) I use Rhapsody for my playlist.
D) Truly, by Lionel Ritchie.
E) 1 MP3 player (NOT an iPod!)
F) Live concerts – 6: Dan Fogelberg (RIP), Garth Brooks, Confederate Railroad, John M Montgomery and the guy who sung “The Big D and I don’t mean Dallas.” The last one was Colin Raye back in 2001.
G) Soundtrack? I have absolutely no idea.
Jennifer on 29 Aug 2009 at 12:10 pm #
A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music? All of the above — I like having background noise. I don’t get to listen to *my* music much anymore, though, because it’s not always “kid friendly”. So the TV winds up being on.
B) How many albums/CDs do you own? If you count what we own through Itunes? Hm… Take the 10K plus songs that we have, and think that 10 songs are on an album… Approx. 1000 albums.
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it? Yes, and we also rip our cds to digital so that we don’t risk ruining the cds.
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours? The song “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You” by “Heart” is probably the closest. We don’t LIKE the song, but we do have fond memories of it.
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car? 8, I think, not including the antique radios and the 8 track players. If you count those we’ve got at least 15.
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life? 80? Something like that. I used to go to 2 a weekend. But it’s been a long time, because of the kids.
Jennifer on 29 Aug 2009 at 12:19 pm #
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
I can’t pick songs, sorry. It would have to be albums or bands. I just would NOT be able to narrow it down to single songs.
Anything by Stray Cats or Brian Setzer in general; he’s been a huge influence on me musically
The album “Purest Feeling” by Nine Inch Nails; it’s always helped me to sleep and the songs were great
Anything by Weird Al, hopefully I could include everything by him; he’s so nice and an awesome artist
Anything by Michael Crawford; in fact, if I could only pick ONE it would be from his discography
Andrew Lloyd Webber; I’d kidnap him to write the soundtrack, with Michael Crawford to sing it. If I had that combo, I’d live a happy life.
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 1:05 pm #
Bronte, actually that’s WHY I listen to music while I write. I’m ADD and oddly enough having noise around me forces me into hyper-focus, which is when I do my best writing!
KarenC, I would go nuts driving if I didn’t have music. I just figured everybody was like that, but maybe not. *G*
Madeline, do you find as you get older that songs and artists you thought you’d “grown out of” you like again? It’s that nostalgia thing for me. I’m buying up CDs that I’d gotten rid of years ago, which is weird.
Pesky, I LOVE that son “Life in a Northern Town.” It’s one of the songs in my Faves of All playlist.
Lori, you’re clearly not a music person. Which is funny, because I don’t think Claudia is one either, and y’all are such good friends!
But wow, there’s a lot of you on here who are. 30 concerts, Sheridan? That’s a lot! I wish I’d gone to more when I was younger.
Sheridan, are you a fan of Talking Heads, too? I saw the David Byrne song and wondered. Hubby and I are big fans of Talking Heads.

Becky, I like Moonlight Sonata, too. I have all the numbered symphonies, actually, as well as a whole bunch of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Handel, Chopin, and Haydn. I used to listen to classical while I worked, but I find it’s too distracting. New Age or soundtracks work better for me.
Kelly Ann, Jennifer and ericaleigh, clearly you’re music people!
ericaleigh, thanks for the link! We have the same problem with things that don’t work. We tend to collect them (along with old remotes and old manuals). Hubby is on a massive cleaning binge right now and trying to get rid of stuff, thank God.
KarenR, I would have loved to hear Dan Fogelberg in concert. I like his hits.
Jennifer, I like Weird Al myself. And Heart is on my Itunes. Love them.

Great topic
A – yes to everything. I think it kind of irritates my dh that I’ve music on all the time. I just grew up listening to music all the time. It really gets me going in the morning. In hs back when I had my own room, I’d read, listen to music, and sing along. It helped me remember what I was reading. Then, in college I couldn’t do that because of my roommate.
B – no clue, but I hate to dust them.
C – Itunes
D – True by Spandau Ballet; it was after dancing to it that we decided that we like like each other back in college.
E – 2 Ipods, 2 MP3s; 3 stereos; 2 computers
F – Hmm, I haven’t counted; we saw Depeche Mode at the Hollywood Bowl on the 17th, though. I hear the Sunday concert was better.
G – We’re not Gonna Take It – Twisted Sister (I’m not taking bad behavior. It’s my anthem post-naked tantrum {my dd} at the grocery store.)
I Melt With You – Modern English
We Close Our Eyes – Oingo Boingo
Straight from the Heart – Bryan Adams
You Might Think – The Cars

B) 100’s I purged a lot after downloading onto computer
C) iTunes all the way
D) Van Morrison’s “Moondance” – our wedding song
E) hmm.. not counting the kids’ players – my iPod, iPhone, computer, kitchen, 4 TVs (XM radio), bathroom, sitting room, outdoor docking station, work out room, portable cup holder player for golf cart, oh and have a cooler with speakers for the pool/beach.
F) over 200? too many to count
G) just 5??
With a Little Help From My Friends – Joe Cocker
The Eyes of Texas (UT school song)
Roll With the Changes – REO Speedwagon
Life’s Been Good – Joe Walsh

What’s really cool to me is how so many of us have different songs as “soundtrack of your life” choices. It just shows what a diverse group of women we are!
Emmanuelle, I love “I Will Always Love You.” I broke down and bought the soundtrack album to The Bodyguard a few years ago, and I listen to several songs often. One of them was even in my “soundtrack” for Stoneville (after you read the book, you can guess which one *G*).
cheryl c., you’re the closest to having a list where I KNEW all the songs (I just don’t know the Josh Groban one)! Oh, and I like them all, too.
nancyg, I wish I sounded like Whitney Houston ANYWHERE.
I can’t believe how many concerts you’ve been to!
ladydawgfan, what is Shareaza?
GSM on 29 Aug 2009 at 4:24 pm #
Fun post. Thanks. My answers are below.
A) While listening to music–As much as I love music, as a new grandmother, I find I’m partial to quiet, too! Now, the things I most often do while listening to music are driving and reading.
B) Albums/CDs owned–Hundreds of each
C) Itunes– Nope
D) Special song–No, although my husband and I share the same favorite Beatles song, “In My Life.”
E) Number of music players–Three
F) Live concerts–20 or so (And those of you who don’t think live bands sound as good as recordings never went to a Bruce Springsteen concert in the 1970s.)
G) Life soundtrack–Five? Only five? That’s tough for folks as old as me. (Remember, we own hundreds of vinyl albums!) “In My Life” by the Beatles; “Bell Bottom Blues” by Eric Clapton; “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones; “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, and “Ode to Joy,” by Beethoven.
ladydawgfan on 29 Aug 2009 at 4:49 pm #
Sabrina,
Shareaza is a P2P network much like Napster, with a paid subscription like Napster to keep it legal. You can download the latest music, videos, photos, etc. I have tried new artists this way, and found music that I thought was lost forever. Napster was a pain in the butt, but Shareaza is much faster and trouble free. It’s how I get most of my music, unless the artist is someone I really just HAVE to have now (much like my Goddess books!).

A) Which of the following would you do while listening to music?
All of them! Love some background noise!
B) How many albums/CDs do you own?
Not many as I mainly listen to Hot Cop’s music. HE owns a ton and it’s fun to explore his selections!
C) Do you use Itunes or something like it?
itunes and now, pandora.
D) Do you and your hubby/family/best friend have a “song” that’s just yours?
Lover’s Waltz by A.A. Bondy
E) How many music players (Ipod, stereo, CD player, etc.) do you own, not counting the one in your car?
Four.
F) How many live concerts have you been to in your life?
Around 30. Can’t remember them all.
G) If you had to pick a soundtrack for your life, what five songs would it include?
Sheesh. That’s tough. I’ll have to think that one through and get back to you. I know it would include the them to Braveheart because I looooove that song and it makes me get misty-eyed.
For the record, I’d love to hear Whitney Houston in concert. She has SUCH an incredible voice and I’m glad she’s shed of that loser ex of hers and back on stage where she belongs.
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 6:00 pm #
GSM, the one thing I can’t do well while listening to music is reading. I can’t read over my work if music is playing, although I can write with no problem. Weird, huh?
ladydawgfan, thanks for explaining about Shareaza!
KarenH, I totally agree about Whitney and the loser husband. Such a shame that he influenced her so much.

I’ll do anything to win a free SJ book! I loved your ballads blog yesterday.
A) Relax and cook. Does it count for bathing if I turn on the car stereo while I’m washing the dogs in the driveway?
B) Lots!
C) Ipod. Makes exercising go by quicker!
D) A goofy 1960s French song.
E) Five.
F) A few dozen. Most recently, last summer, Rick Springfield—twice. No kidding. I went to Live Aid way back when, and went all the way up to the front of the stadium for Rick’s set. I was freaking out so badly, an Ozzy Ozbourne fan (a gigantic guy with tattoos and leather) put me on his shoulders and asked my best friend if I was going to be okay. I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for heavy metal lovers ever since!
G) Brahms, Symphony No. 3, third movement; Lick the Tins, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”; “Maria” from West Side Story; Keith Urban, “When God Made Woman”; Yes, “Song for the Harmonic Convergence”
[Janae—Oo oo oo, anything Bryan Adams, he’s my writing soundtrack god, so wonderful! And Bronte, I love your life soundtrack!!]
Louisa Cornell on 29 Aug 2009 at 6:38 pm #
A) All of the above.
B) How many? Pushing 1500 if you include vinyl, cassettes, reel to reel and CDs. But remember I am a classically trained musician with a doctorate in music. That explains a lot of the music I have. We won’t go into the Kid Rock, Patsy Cline or Metallica stuff.
C) I don’t use ITunes or have an IPod. My niece and nephews are HORRIFIED so I will probably get one soon.
D) My late DH and I always called Etta James AT LAST our song. Any time I hear it I still smile.
E) About half a dozen so far. I have some every expensive killer Bose speakers and I tend to hook them up to whichever apparatus I am listening to. When I finally sell a book I want to get one of those turntables that can record your vinyl albums onto CDs. Many of my vinyls are very old and rare and I would love to have them on CD so I can listen to them. I have some Arthur Schnabel recordings of Beethoven Piano Concertos that are considered collector’s items. And an original pressing of Marion Anderson’s first album.
F) I can’t even begin to count them! Between serious music, country music and rock and roll I have been to hundreds of concerts. Some of the most memorable were Aerosmith in 1995,
Louisa Cornell on 29 Aug 2009 at 6:44 pm #
Metallica in 1988 0r 89 in Munich. Pavarotti in Italy. Elly Ameling in Birmingham.
G) Soundtrack for me life. Tough one there!
Der Holle Rache from Die Zauberflote by Mozart. (the money piece of my debut role in opera)
Nessun dorma from Turandot by Puccini (last line always makes me cry “Love will conquer all.”
At Last (Etta James performance only, nobody else comes close)
Fields of Gold by Sting
Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber and Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Patricia Barraclough on 29 Aug 2009 at 9:29 pm #
A. I would listen to music while doing all of them.
B. I probably have about 300 albums.
C. No Itunes, etc.
D. “Our song” goes way back to when we were engaged, Sweet City Woman.
E. I have 6.
F. Have lost count of the number of concerts. We attend at least 8 Celtic concerts every year. Our town has a
concert on Main Street every Friday night May through September and we attend most of them.
We attend many of the local symphony concerts. We catch any other musical event we can. It helps that
volunteer usher at the local venue. Over the years we have seen some great performers: Peter, Paul, and
Mary, Celtic Women, Leahy, the Barra MacNeils, Elton John, and many, many more.
G. My sound track:
1. Don’t Call Me Early by the Barra MacNeils
2. Time In a Bottle
3. Breathless by the Coors
4. I Will Find You (from Last of the Mohicans) by Clannad
5. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 1-4
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Aug 2009 at 10:19 pm #
KWilde, LOL about the Rick Springfield thing! I’ve got “Jesse’s Girl” on my Itunes, but haven’t ever heard any of his others.
Louisa, I KNOW you’re big into music, what with all your performing.
Patricia, I have Leahy, the Barra MacNeils, and Peter, Paul, and Mary on my Itunes. The first two are great to write to. I also love Clannad. Do you listen to Dougie Maclean? He did the soundtrack music for some of Last of the Mohicans, and one of his pieces I listen to a lot, although I really love his vocal music, too.
TinaLouiseF on 29 Aug 2009 at 11:08 pm #
If I can’t count the tape/cd player in the car, can I count both laptops?
I have a 2 tape cassette radio, a walkman, a cassette radio (I think) and a album player that was broke when I got it (I love presents). The last two may still be in the store room at dad’s house.
I rarely play music except in the car. I have about 30 cassettes and 15 cds.
Concerts: Sawyer Brown, Billy Dean, Patty Loveless, (I think) Pam Tillis, and I can never remember the name of the other guy at the Fair concert with Billy Dean.
Jennifer on 30 Aug 2009 at 8:31 am #
Ms. Cornell, we have an MP3 record converter. It works wonderfully well, and we’ve been able to save so many great songs that would be otherwise lost to us (like “Mind Your Mommy”, which my MIL listened to as a child). Songs like that are extremely hard to find on most legal sites. Also, you do capture some of that great vinyl sound. It’s not quite the same, but it’s better than ruining the record. My recommendation is that you should definitely get one, especially with how music-oriented you are. And they’re not even that expensive any more.
Now that you mention it, if I count the 8 tracks and vinyl we haven’t bothered to convert (do we REALLY need digital copies of 5 different “Polka’s Greatest Hits” albums?), we’re probably skipping 100 or so more. I mean, while listening to the 8 tracks is fun for nostalgia’s sake, there are only so many ways you can listen to the long version of American Pie. And who thought to release THAT song on a 45? You have to flip the record halfway through! I don’t, however, have any reel-reel music! That would be fun.
Saw Metallica in ‘92. Weird Al was the best, though, both times I saw him. I adore him, can you tell??
Sabrina Jeffries on 30 Aug 2009 at 8:35 am #
Jennifer, my hubby’s first stereo was a reel to reel. So was my dad’s! So I know reel-to-reel very well. Never had an 8-track player though, just cassette players and record players.
Liz on 30 Aug 2009 at 11:13 am #
A) 1. Surfing the net – Absolutely!
2. Bathing – More of a shower person, actually, but yes!
3. Making love – perhaps I might admit to doing this in the past…
4. Writing – This is a MUST DO.
5. Relaxing – Is there any other way?
6. Cooking – All the time.
B) How many albums/CDs? Several hundred at least.
C) Itunes? I use MediaMonkey – I highly recommend it. Hubby uses iTunes.
D) Do you and your hubby have a “song”? The popular song when we first started dating was Savage Garden’s Truly, Madly, Deeply. It quickly became “ours” and I still get a little teary-eyed when I hear it.
E) How many music players do you own? Two iPods, One Stereo, One CD player + computers
F) How many live concerts have you seen? Dave Matthews Band, Cowboy Mouth, Kid Rock w/ Lit, Beatles Revolution (cover band), dozens of local music festivals and many high school band performances.
G) A soundtrack for my life would include: Truly, Madly, Deeply, Evanescence’s My Immortal, Mika’s Happy Ending, Billy Joel’s And So It Goes, Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, Jars of Clay’s Flood, Jo Dee Messina’s Bring on the Rain, Mr. Mister’s Kyrie, Toto’s Africa, John Mayer’s Say, …. did you say five?

A) Do you listen to music . . .? Everything is better to music!
but still have crates of vinyl, some of which I still play (“Jesus Christ Superstar”, for one).
B) How many albums/CDs? Maybe 100 CD’s, as I only buy my fav artists and unusual or hard-to-find/ rarely heard stuff. Threw out cases of cassettes except for about 20 I couldn’t ditch emotionally
C) Itunes? No iPod *cringes* but I’m starting up w/ Pandora Radio and I do Sirius satelite. I have a Walkman phone but I’m too old to learn how to get music into it . . .
D) Do you . . . have a “song”? Not really, just artists. But if my sister Paula & I hear “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC or “1999″ by Prince, we look at each other an grin as we’re thinking back on our parti-girl days!
E) How many music players do you own? Just one really good stereo setup in my living room (altho my 5′ tall Magnapan speakers are currently covered in cardboard until my kitten, Sookie, gets declawed soon! I also have a CD/clock radio next to my bed so I can fall asleep to my New Age-ey electronica.
F) How many live . . . ? Beginning w/Alice Cooper when I was 12 until I flew to NYC to see Richie Kotzen last month, I’d say several 100’s!
Cindi on 30 Aug 2009 at 2:51 pm #
G) Soundtrack for my life? OMG, this is hard! “Bluest Eyes” by Storyville, Heart’s “Heartbreaker”, any “old” Rod Stewart, “Sweet Soul Sister” by The Cult, Third Day’s “Saved” and “Doin’ What the Devil Says to Do” by Richie Kotzen.

B. 300 cd’s give or take. 15 albums and 30 tapes.
C. Itunes. No way! It’s my Sony Walkman, computer or boom box
D. Do I have a song? No. Too many good ones out there. Besides I sing in a church choir and my parents were professional musicians so I listen to all kinds of music.
E. How many music players do I own? 3, not counting computer
F. No live concerts. However I have seen Phantom of the Opera live twice.
G. Soundtrack for my life? Sorry seems to be the hardest word by Elton John, Alone by Heart, I wish it would rain by Phil Collins.

Ms. Jeffries, I have reel-to-reel movies, but nothing audio. A little before my time, but not too much. How did you skip 8 tracks? I used to have a car with a working 8 track player. They were a lot of fun.
Angela, I love The Phantom of the Opera, in nearly all its incarnations… but I haven’t been able to bring myself to actually see it live, because Michael Crawford won’t be in it.
I’ve seen HIM live, which was wonderful… but to really listen to someone in his role would be very hard. I didn’t mind the movie so much, because it wasn’t the SAME, if you know what I mean.
Patricia Barraclough on 30 Aug 2009 at 8:55 pm #
Sabrina, I have 8 Clannad CDs. If you have never listened to Clann An Drumma you are missing something. Their members have reformed and a new band, Albannach, is performing. They really have to be experienced live. The Glengarry Bhoys are great for traditional as well as celtic rock. There are a lot of regional and canadian bands that perform here. Rathkeltair is pretty good, their piper rocks. Coyote has an awesome female drummer. We have a good number of local groups. Roger Whittaker has done a nice job with some of the old ballads.
Angela on 31 Aug 2009 at 12:46 pm #
Thanks for the tips Sabrina, I’ll keep them in mind.
Jennifer, even though Michael Crawford isn’t there in person he is in my mind.
