So . . . whatcha been readin’ lately?
Jun 15th 2009
Karen HawkinsOn Writing!
It’s the Book Quiz Time!
I was going to write a post about colloquialisms but I’m going to save that for Thursday. I’ve been consumed by the number of books in my To Be Read pile. See, I’m reorganizing my office and what to do/where to put these books has taken up a great deal of my time.
There are a lot of them.
A lot.
Which made me think of you guys and all of your books!
So, let’s begin . . .
Name that book!
How many books are in your TBR pile:
Are they organized (and if so, how?)
The book you just finished:
The book you’ll read next:
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read:
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most:
Join us for a little game of ‘watcha been readin’ lately?!’

I have over 250 books in my TBR, organized by subgenre (paranormal over here, historical over there, contemporary/YA/RS over there). I just finished Visions in White by Nora and plan to start Pride and Prejudice and Zombies today.

How many books are in your TBR pile: not too much, 17 actually
Are they organized (and if so, how?) : no they’re not, just lay there on the top shelf of my “keeper” bookcase
The book you just finished: Redneck Cinderella by Luann Mclane (needed a nice light contemporary… got exactly what I wanted ith this one)
The book you’ll read next: not sure, hesitating between The conqueror or a Hint Of Wicked
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: This Heart of Mine by SEP
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: can’t think of any, maybe who cousin Michael really is will be a nice surprising one, don’t know…

MJ, I bow before such incredible organization! I have shelves and boxes of books, all sort of stashed here and there. I didn’t know how many until I went to pull them out to organize them and WOWZA, I need to get to readin’!
Btw, let me know about the P & P & Zombies, when you’re done. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I’m intrigued.
Emmanuella, ahhhh! A woman with an in-control TBR pile. I salute you! I love a good, light read — and all of my comfort reads are just that – mainly Georgette Heyer. I’m with you on the cousin Michael mystery! I CAN’T WAIT to find out who it is, either!

How many books are in your TBR pile: generally between 10 and 30 books. Kind of on a drought right now, but I’m rereading The School For Heiresses series in anticipation of the summer.
Are they organized (and if so, how?) same author books are grouped together in series order.
The book you just finished: Beware a Scot’s Revenge
The book you’ll read next: Let Sleeping Rogues Lie
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: A Secret Love by Stephanie Laurens, Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas.
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: that’s an interesting question to pose to Romance Novel enthusiasts. The whole point is that we get what we want in the end, a HEA, so I don’t think I’ve ever been surprised by a RN ending (Gone with the Wind on the other hand was heartbreaking…). Most of the time when bizarre plot twists show up it feels like its just the author trying to make the book longer. often it doesn’t work. drives me a little nuts most of the time.
Mooslady on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:20 am #
Wow my pile is so small! It only has 2 books, This Duchess of Mine and a Commentary of the Rule of Benedict. Still, I am going to the library today so the pile may grow.
.
I just finished, Don’t Bargain with the Devil, and They Also Served, a book of short biographies of people who served in the military but are famous for something else. Even got my husband to read that one and he hasn’t read anything but textbooks and tech manuals for years.
I just started Murder in the Library of Congress, which is one of my choices for the Adult summer reading program at the library. I am hoping for the BN gift card from the prize drawing.
My comfort read has been Rejar, by Dara Joy. I loved her Knight of a Trillian stars series but her writing went way downhill after she got in the battle with her publisher.
Hmmm, plot twists,… not that many in RN as Cail said. I have read mysteries with some doozies although I couldn’t name one right now. ….and the Cousin Michael thing, I still have no clue who it could be. Ones in RN usually seem to contrived.

How many books are in your TBR pile: A lot (more than a hundred)… Some have even been there for a loooong time.
Are they organized (and if so, how?) : Most of them are stacked on the floor next to my bed.
The book you just finished: The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen
The book you’ll read next: For My Lady’s Heart by Laura Kinsale
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: I haven’t reread anything since I was a child, and then, it was Les Vacances by the Comtesse de Ségur
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

My TBR is full of research books! Not organized, sitting in a pile, waiting for me to get through them.
I recently finished Bet Me by Jenny Cruise. Lovely!
Next up in Romance, I’ll be reading CL Wlison’s Lord of the Fading Lands and rereading Sabrina’s Wed Him Before You Bed Him–both for my Romance Book club–where I will FINALLY get to talk about Cousin Michael! Hooray!
Comfort read: Little Women. I love that book. I never get tired of it.
Surprise plot twist–Claudia’s The Courtesan’s Wager. I actually gasped in surprise at the plot twist in that one! We had no idea! Masterfully done!
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:52 am #
I suppose I should clarify what I mean by ’surprise.’ While you know romance novels are going to have an HEA (just like mystery novels will always reveal the killer), I’ve read plot twists, or surprising endings before. It’s in the HOW they get there.
One of my favorite books is from Christina Dodd, A WELL FAVORED MAN and there were several plot twists which surprised me. So while the ending might not be surprising, character developments or plot twists can be. It was also one of the first paranormal romances, as well. Wayyyy before its time.
Cail, so you’re glomming Sabrina’s books in anticipation of her new releases — that’s a great idea. You can ’see’ the whole series at one time, which is so cool. Btw, I applaud your comfort reads! I love both of those books and have them on my Keeper Shelf, too.
Mooslady, does your library mail books to you? Our local system started doing that. You just go online, fill out a form and viola! They mail them to your house. Pretty cool. I haven’t thought of REJAR in years, but I remember reading it. It was so fresh and different at the time, too!

How many books are in your TBR pile: 40…and I’m planning on going to the bookstore and getting some more with some of my birthday money.
Are they organized (and if so, how?) No
The book you just finished: Born in Shame by Nora Roberts
The book you’ll read next: Sea Swept by Nora Roberts (unless I find something else at the bookstore.)
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: There are so many…but right now it’s the Twilight series.
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Zen and the Art of Vampires by Katie MacAlister
LisaK on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:55 am #
I don’t really have a TBR pile. You could consider the list of my pre-orders on Amazon a TBR pile, though. These are (I just looked it up) 14 at the moment.
I finished Master of Surrender by Karin Tabke on Saturday (thanks to our dear Buffie!). Wow, what a goooooood book, I devoured it and absolutely couldn’t stop!
Master of Torment, the sequel to the abovementioned MOS, which should arrive here tomorrow. I won’t be able to read it before Thursday, though, which is a shame. I got absolutely hooked on that series!
Lady Sophia’s Lover by Lisa Kleypas. I absolutely lovelovelove that book and could read it all over again. I love that it is different from the typical romance novel in so many ways (hey, the protagonists actually talk to each other and don’t only assume the worst and listen to what others say!).
Agree with Cail on the ending thing. However, Lisa Kleypas’s Someone To Watch Over Me has an interesting plot twist that I didn’t see coming and that really surprised me.
Freedom Writer on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:58 am #
In my TBR pile I have about 20 current romances. I also have a couple of dozen older romances that were bought at a used book store years ago plus numerous other biographies, history books, writing books and classics.
My current romances are on a special shelf with another shelf for the older romances. The other books fill my other 3 or 4 bookshelves.
I just finished Before the Scandal by Suzanne Enoch and just started the Courtesan’s Wager by Claudia Dain.
I have too many unread books to read books over and over again.
Agatha Christie has managed to fake me out a couple of times, but I can’t think of a book that I’ve read where the end was a complete surprise although I do have several Karen Rose books in my TBR. Could I be in for a surprise ending or two?
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 6:58 am #
Shayanna, I have a stack of four books by my bed, too — the TBRs that I plan on reading next. I’m glad to hear that your TBR piles is similar in size to mine. I need a system so I can read them … and yes, some are older now, too. Should I read those FIRST? Or LAST? It’s a conundrum!
Let us know how you like the Kinsale! She has a very lyrical style.
Deb, we’re ALL dying to find out about Cousin Michael. I. Want. To. Know. Now. PLEASE! (And if any of you DO know, do NOT tell! We want to read it in the book!)
As for your comfort read, I haven’t reread Little Women in years, but oh, how I loved that book. I so wanted to BE Jo and I so HATED Amy, little witch woman that she was. And noooo, Laurie should NEVER have been with Amy. That was just wrong.
Hmm. Maybe that’s why I haven’t reread it.
Ronlyn on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:09 am #
How many books are in your TBR pile: about 10 right now.
Are they organized (and if so, how?): does stacked neatly count as organized?
The book you just finished: I’m almost done with Suzanne Brockmann’s Dark of Night
The book you’ll read next: No idea, really.
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: several. Julie Garwood’s Ransom is prob. a most often re-read
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Emma Holly’s Kissing Midnight.
LoriHandeland on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:27 am #
How many books are in your TBR pile:
About 60
Are they organized (and if so, how?)
They’re neat, but not so much organized. I put the newer releases on top to read first.
The book you just finished:
My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Never read her before and thought I should. Loved it.
The book you’ll read next:
Finger Lickin’ Fifteen–LOVE, love, love Evanovich.
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read:
Lord of Scoundrels
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most:
Lisa Gardner’s The Perfect Husband
dbrown3400 on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:29 am #
There are too many books in my TBR pile too count. I have this OCD habit of buying a book on a recommendation, then purchasing the author’s backlist. I’ll never have enough time to finish them all.
The books are organized by author then by series in most cases.
Just finished Under Fire by Jo Davis.
Will read Wicked Prey by John Sandford and Don’t Bargain w/the Devil next.
I have two comfort reads: Welcome to Temptation by Jenny Crusie and Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey depending on whether I’m in the mood for an historical or a contemporary.
Just finished a book called My Attrition by Alan Shope for review that had an unusual ending based on the buildup of the story. But it was fiction, not romance, so I guess I should have expected it. I’ll agree with Shayanna on Shutter Island. I’ve read it twice and still am not sure about that book.
dbrown3400 on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:30 am #
That should be “to count,” of course.
Lorena on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:57 am #
I don’t really have a TBR pile except for the library books (piled by my bed). I hate to admit it here but these days I’m trying to NOT buy many books. There are a couple of authors on my “absolutely do not miss” list, and I’m limiting puchases to those, and borrowing what I can. Karen Rose is on that list
The pile is organized alphabetically by author, only because it helps me balance fiction and non-fiction reads.
I just finished reading Heather Graham’s Nightwalker, and before that Charles de Lint’s The Mystery of Grace. Both excellent books. I love de Lint–he is definitely one of my comfort reads, and there are several of his books on the “comfort” list. I don’t often read fantasy or urban fantasy (I think that’s how he’s catorized) but I always look forward to his books.
Next up? Not sure. The next books on the stack are a paranormal romance and a sort of witchy-comedy-romance, but I just haven’t picked them up yet.
Unexpected plot twists? Going with another of H. G.’s books–The Dead Room, I think was the name. Not going into it because it was SUCH a twist, I’d ruin the story for anyone who hasn’t read it.
Lorena on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:58 am #
Oh, yeah, I’ve re-read K-Ro’s books a dozen times, but for fun. I’m not sure I’d call them “comfort” reads….
No, not comfortable at all….
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:13 am #
Susan M, what a delightful thing to do with birthday money! I’ve asked for Amazon gift certificates, myself. I just got the Twilight book and can’t wait to read it!
LisaK, I can see the downside of this post . . . my TBR is going to grow. LisaK, I haven’t heard of Karin Tabke, but now I’m off to look her up.
I loooove LADY SOPHIA’S LOVER, btw. It’s on my keeper shelf, too! I love that Lisa Kleypas’s heroines are so mature. Not in age mature, but in emotions. And I didn’t see that coming in SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, too. All of Lisa’s books are on my keeper shelf!
Freedom, Karen Rose will surprise you! I’ve read a bunch of her books and while you know the hero and heroine will eventually get together, the suspense part will keep you guessing!
Ronlyn, yes, neatly stacked counts as ‘organized.’
Btw, don’t you love Garwood’s historicals? I haven’t read one of those in years, but some of them are on my keeper shelf. Hmmm . . . I wonder if my keeper shelf is keeping me from my tbr pile? ACK!

How many books are in your TBR pile:
about 100? maybe more?
Are they organized (and if so, how?)
yes – by format – HC, TPB, MM; then by genre & author’s last name
The book you just finished:
Bruno, Chief of Police on a recommendation
Cara Black’s Murder in the Latin Quarter (a murder-mystery series set in Paris)
The book you’ll read next:
coming up this week – Ghengis: Bones of the Hills by Conn Iggulden, 8th Confession by James Patterson, & The Pleasure Palace: Secrets of the Tudor Court
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read:
Jane Austen (*love* Persuasion!)
Judith McNaught’s Whitney, My Love
Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series
K-Hawk & I’m NOT just saying this!! your 1st trilogy, Julia, Sara (LOVE me some Nick!!) & Belated Bride
Suzanne E’s England’s Perfect Hero
Lynn Kurland’s This Is All I Ask
Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book: Lessons & Teachings from a Lifetime of Golf
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most:
The List by Steve Martini
The Faithful Spy by Alex Berenson
I call it the “WOW” factor. I’ve probably bought about 5-10 copies of each of these to distribute to friends.
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:19 am #
Lori, I’ve read Picoult and, while I enjoyed the books, I didn’t love them. Maybe I haven’t read the right one. I should try Her Sister’s Keeper. I’ve heard good things about them.
As for Evanovich, NOW you’re singing my tune! She’s incredible and suuuuch fun to read. Btw, I saw Lisa Gardner speak at a conference once and thought she was fascinating, so I started buying her books and am thoroughly hooked. She’s awesome and her books are an out-of-control-ride from the first page. I love that!
dbrown, so you have the Backlist Flu, too? I do the same thing — hear about an author, buy their entire backlist, and then never get the chance to read a word of any. Probably why I have so many books on my tbr shelves. It also makes it intimidating to read because if I like one, I’ll want to read the others and do I have time for that? It’s a cruel circle! I have to say you have MUCH more organized shelves than I do. Congratulations! Can you come to my house and fix all of my books?
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:26 am #
Lorena, I’m putting The Dead Room on my tbb (to be bought) list. Sounds like a don’t miss! I see you like mystery and suspense in your books. I’ve been reading more of those lately, too. As for Karen Ro’s books being comfort reads … yes and no. They don’t make you FEEL comfortable, but they ARE comfortable because you’re guaranteed a read you’ll love and an ending that you’re very happy with. That’s a real comfort read even if you’re on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Crp, I’ll have to dig up Morning Glory. I have it, I’ve read it, and I kept it, but I can’t remember it right now. I know I liked it or it wouldn’t still be on my shelves. I can see I HAVE to get My Sister’s Keeper now! I enjoy Jodi and look forward to this one!
Ack! My tbr pile is GROWING as we speak!
Nancyg, awww! That’s so sweet you included my books in your list! They’re republishing The Seduction of Sara in September. I didn’t change a word, but I *did* write a letter about Nick’s illness and where I got the idea for that.
I haven’t read either of your surprised books and now I want them both. Which should I get first?
JudyPatooty on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:27 am #
How many books are in your TBR pile: Just a guess, but I’d say 35 (mostly in paperback, some on my Kindle)
Are they organized (and if so, how?): The paperback TBRs are grouped by author, and in the order I want to read them
The book you just finished: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
The book you’ll read next: probably Fantasy (anthology featuring Goddess Sabrina!)
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Hmmm. I can’t think of any right away. Add me to the list of people just dying to know who Cousin Michael is, though!
nancyg on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:41 am #
K-Hawk:
I’d get The List by Steve Martini – it’s a stand-alone book.
The Faithful Spy is the 1st book out of 3. haven’t read the 3rd (saving it?), but the 2nd wasn’t as impressive to me.
Good news about Sara – readers need to discover Nick! – although I hunted down an extra copy at the UBS since my 1st one was getting a little mangled, lol.
Judy:
How could I forget PILLARS? Loved it – read it about 10-15 years ago, before Oprah “discovered” it a year or two ago. Might have to re-visit it – it’s on the keeper shelf. The sequel? not a huge fan, although I am a big Follett fan!
I’ve been collecting the Janet E. books to take with me on vacation for a week in August. have all of them up to 13 – should keep me busy – EVERYONE I know says I HAVE to read them!!
I’ve been on a mystery/thriller kick the last month or two as well. Want to pick up the new Jason Bourne/Lustbader, Raymond Khoury, & Philip Margolin soon.

The book you just finished: Smart Girls Think Twice
The book you’ll read next: ? dunno
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: anything by the Goddesses
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most:
Kill For Me disturbed me and that surprised me, but I had to finish
Karen Rose on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:43 am #
My TBR pile organized? Ha, I scoff. I have at least 50 books in various piles, plus my audio books TBLT (listened to).
Last book was “The Concrete Blonde” by Michael Connelly on audio. Next book, Sabrina’s Bargain/Devil. Must catch up before Cousin Michael is revealed. Next on audio will be Connelly’s Last Coyote.
Old favorite – any of my Nora collection or my LaVyrle collection. Most recently it was LaVyrle’s The Gamble.
Biggest twist – Connelly’s Lost Light. Audio books keep me from reading the end first, LOL, so twists are “twistier” that way!
Karen Rose on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:45 am #
Lorena and Kathy/Cookie – thank you!
Yeah, so many things in KILL FOR ME surprised me too, especially as it was the end of a trilogy. I’d get caught up and then write something and stare at the screen, stunned. “Well. That explains a lot.”
Karen Rose on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:48 am #
Oops, thanks to KarenH too! It’s fun when you can surprise a fellow author. I’m always guessing how I’d end it if it were me, and sometimes that takes the fun out of reading. That’s why when I read a physical book, I usually read out of my genre.
(Audio books keep me from cheating to see if I’m right and the author ends it like I would. Ha!)
Freshechelle on 15 Jun 2009 at 8:56 am #
My tbr pile is growing in anticipation of a quiet vacation where I hope to do nothing but read and rest. Guess it’s only 10 books big so far but more are in transit. It’s a lot of Lori’s and Madeline’s backlists and the story of Veuve Cliquot – the store of the Champagne-making widow. That’s been lingering for a while, got to read that.
Last book read was Sabrina’s latest. Started Deirdre Martin’s new one but have been too distracted to get through it. Will probably wait for the paperback of the new Janet Evanovich.
I’ll be rereading Rachel’s latest on vacation. And I’ll be picking up the next releases recently updated on the left margin of this site.
Can’t think of any surprise twist ending not because there weren’t any but because my brain is mush.
Shayanna on 15 Jun 2009 at 9:03 am #
I wouldn’t put Karen Rose in the comfort pile… I went to bed after reading the beginning of “Don’t Tell” and had a horrible nightmare afterwards. I guess this means that it is very well written, so the reader identifies with the heroine, and really live with her. “Have You Seen Her” is in my tbr pile (I like to read in order) but I’ll wait to read it during the vacations, in daylight… No Karen Rose alone at midnight for me
I like the way “For My Lady’s Heart” is written. All the old english is very understandable, and it gives the tale a voice which stands out from other books.
Kim on 15 Jun 2009 at 9:19 am #
How many books are in your TBR pile: um, I can’t count that high
Are they organized (and if so, how?) Of course! By genre-author-series-publication date
The book you just finished: I’m in the middle of Julia’s Summer of Two Wishes and its fabulous!
The book you’ll read next: K-Rawk’s I Can See You!
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Jude Deveraux’s Sweet Liar
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Sandra Brown’s one about the twins.
Sabrina Jeffries on 15 Jun 2009 at 9:39 am #
Shayanna, you’re so right about Karen’s books–read them in daylight! Die for Me scared the bejesus out of me, but I LOVED it. I’ve got the others in my TBR.
Right now, all I’m doing is reading books for quotes, and I can’t even fit those in! I’m in the middle of one by Renee Bernard (very good), and just finished one by Monica Burns (also very good). And I’m eagerly anticipating one by Kate Moore (which I KNOW will be good since I’ve read her before).
I also read Liz Carlyle’s Tempt the Devil. Yum!
Comfort reads are Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught and Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey and Hot Shot by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (which no seems to like but me) and … Well, I have a big keeper bookcase. *G*
Plot twists … hmm, I can’t think of any really surprising ones, but I’m hard to fool. I usually see it coming no matter who it is. Oh, oh, but Deb Marlowe had one that totally surprised me! The book’s title is Tall, Dark, and Disreputable, but I think it doesn’t come out until next year. It really surprised me (in a good way), and that almost never happens. I also teared up in that book, which does happen sometimes but not that often.
Claudia Dain on 15 Jun 2009 at 9:40 am #
How many books in TBR? 100? That sounds about right.
They’re organized by topic or setting.
The book I just finished: Liz Carlyle’s Never Romance a Rake. Wonderful book!!
Book I’ll read next: Deb Marlowe’s The Diamonds of Welbourne Manor. I’ve been dying to read it for two months.
Comfort read: you know, I’ve fallen out of that habit. There are so many new books I can’t wait to read.
Plot twist: I can’t think of one! Must be because it happens to me all the time.

Are they organized (and if so, how?) In order of how I think I want to read them.
The book you just finished: Don’t Bargain With The Devil-Sabrina Jeffries
The book you’ll read next: Haven’t really decided yet, its between Highland Scandal-Julia London or Highland Sinner-Hannah Howell probably.
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Pleasure For Pleasure-Eloisa James or Brighter Than The Sun-Julia Quinn or Devil In Winter-Lisa Kleypas
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Can’t really think of a “surprising” ending right now.

What a perfect question for me right now! I am on my 3rd week of recouping from bilateral knee surgery and have completely rearranged, organized and inventoried my books in all my spare time
How many books are in your TBR pile: 152 – I am starting to have anxiety over this! And that number doesn’t include the 40ish I have out from the ‘bary
Are they organized (and if so, how?): All my books are alphabetized. My TBRs are mixed in with a Post It Flag stuck to the spine to identify them as TBR
The book you just finished: Jamie Denton’s The Matchmaker
The book you’ll read next: A reread of Susan Andersen’s Cutting Loose
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: I can’t pick one! LOL! Nora’s Chesapeake Bay Series, Jane Austen’s Emma, Rachel Gibson’s See Jane Score, Linda Howard’s Mr. Perfect and there are so many more! I love rereading books!
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Hmmm…I can’t think of any off the top of my head but I know there are plenty of them! This question is going to drive me nuts the rest of the day! LOL!

How many books are in your TBR pile: 1 (I’ve been whittling them down over the past month. I haven’t touched that last one because its part of a series. Amazon shipped me the 2nd book in the series; but, not the 1st. The 1st one in the series will arrive later in the month….so, hopefully, my TBR stack will be completely taken care of then.)
The book you just finished: The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong and Demons Not Included by Cheyenne McCray
The book you’ll read next: I have several books arriving tomorrow – of those, I’ll read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen next
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: I’ve re-read several books multiple times, depending upon what I’m in the mood for. I’ve probably re-read the In Death series by JD Robb most often. Others include the Julia Quinn Bridgerton series and Suzanne Enoch’s Samantha & Rick series.
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: The one that comes to mind is from a long time ago….Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow.

Primal Fear by William Diehl was one of those that got me at the end. And the movie adaptation with Edward Norton did justice to the book as well.
Derailed by James Siegel was good – much better than the Jennifer Aniston movie.
But then again, aren’t the books ALWAYS better than the movies??

How many books are in your TBR pile:
A LOT. Can’t wait until Lisa Kleypas – Tempt Me at Twilight comes out.
Are they organized (and if so, how?)
Most of my books are ebooks. They are organized in colored folders by author with hearts on my faves and X’s on the ones I didn’t like… just a wee bit anal
The book you just finished:
Jennifer Greene – Blame It on Paris
The book you’ll read next:
I just started Deirdre Martin – With a Twist
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: aww so many… Johanna Lindsey – Gentle Rogue, Lisa Kleypas – Devil in Winter, Judith McNaught – Paradise, SEP – Fancy Pants, JQ – The Viscount Who Loved Me…
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: James Patterson – Hıde and Seek

How many books are in your TBR pile: about 15 to 20 but most are series that I don’t have all of them for yet or at least the beginners
Are they organized (and if so, how?) All of my books are organized alphabetically by author and then within each authors section the books are arranged chronologically by time period with series together. Books that are part of TBR are pulled a little bit forward so they stick out a little that way they already have their spot on the shelf… I’m OCD about book organization, can you tell?
The book you just finished: I am about to finish Always a Scoundrel by Goddess Suzy
The book you’ll read next: The Immortal Hunter by Lynsay Sands
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: The Sherbrooke Bride by Catherine Coutler
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Venus by Jane Feather… I despise this book… I threw it across the room.

Judy P, you know who Cousin Michael is? DON’T TELL ME, but oh gosh, I can’t WAIT for that book. I’ve been wondering and wondering and about the time I thought I knew … well, I’m not sure who it is, but I have my suspicions. I’ll let you know if I was right. Did YOU have him figured out beforehand?
nancyg, I’ll get The List. I can zip onto Amazon and order it for my Kindle, which is actually sort of bad because I’ve bought more books in the last two months since I got it. My Kindle TBR is HUGE!
Btw, you’re going to love the Evanovichs. Stephanie Plumb is hysterical — great beach reads, too.
Kathy, I feel the EXACT same way about Karen Ro’s books. Don’t tell her, but I love them, and yet I have to MAKE myself turn the page sometimes because I’m afraid of what’ll pop out! All of that and she LOOKS so sweet!
Karen Ro (Don’t read the message to Kathy above, btw), I do the same thing you do — read out of my genre when I’m writing. I’ll either edit the poor book to death since I’m in that mode, or lose interest in the writing part because it’s SLOWWWW compared to the reading part, which is deliciously FASSSSST. If I had my way, I’d get paid to read. I could do that!
LisaK on 15 Jun 2009 at 1:10 pm #
Ka-Hawk, those books by Karin Tabke are set in the time of William the Conquerer and as the heroes are knights who have fought all of their lives there are some passages who are rather violent, so if you have a weak stomach you should maybe skip these parts…
Although I have to say Ka-Ro’s “Die For Me” gave me twice the shivers “Master Of Surrender” gave me…
Angela on 15 Jun 2009 at 1:12 pm #
How many in TBR pile? around 30
Organized alphabetically by author then genre
Favorite to read over again? anything by the Goddesses.
No books with surprises. I pretty much figure them out at least 5 chapters in.
What have I just finished? Chicken Soup for the Catlovers Soul
What’s next to read? I haven’t decided yet.
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 1:13 pm #
Fresh, let me know how you like the book about Veuve Cliquot! I read a review of that and was dying to try it, but then couldn’t remember the name and never got around to ordering it. I’ll let you be my Read Barometer and if you like it, I’ll get it.
Shayanna, I love Kinsale’s voice, too. I’m sorry to hear that Karen Ro gave you nightmares, though I completely understand. She really ‘gets’ how bad people think and it totally scares the bejeebers out of us all. Good thing she’s a romantic suspense writer!
Kim, you’re kicked out of the game for gloating about already having Julia’s marvy book, SUMMER OF TWO WISHES. As you’re aware, MOST of us will have to wait until late August to read it. That’s a long, long, LONG time from now, darn it!
Sabrina, I’ll note Deb’s book, although I have her on my alert list and get notices when they come out. Don’t you love being surprised? I know I’m ready to be surprised by Cousin Michael!
Claudia, I just KNEW you’d have an organized tbr pile! Congrats! Looks like you’ve been enjoying some great reads, too!

“Susan M, what a delightful thing to do with birthday money! I’ve asked for Amazon gift certificates, myself. I just got the Twilight book and can’t wait to read it!”
My mom got me a Michael’s gift card so that covered my scrapbooking addiction. I figured my birthday money could support my book addiction. I just got back…I bought 14 more books…all Nora Roberts. (I just discovered her…I know…I’m a little late.) My TBR pile is now up to 54. Karen H, I LOVE the Twilight series!!!!

Too many. Under my coffee table is full, I have a shopping bag full and a grey Goose box full of Hard covers, Trade size and paperback books. They are organized by genre: Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense etc.
I just finished: Tails of Love-Lori Foster, Stella Cameron, Sue Ellen Welfonder etc.
My next book will be: Victoria Thompson’s Murder on Waverly Place
My comfort books are: Remember When-Judith McNaught, Single White Vampire-Lynsay Sands, Knight of a Trillon Stars-Dara Joy, Donovan’s Bed-Debra Mullin, Blue Moon-Lori Handeland, The Buccaneer-Donna Fletcher, Baby Love-Catherine Anderson, In The Prince’s Bed-Sabrina Jeffries, Castle of the Wolf-Sandra Schwab and the Remarkable Miss Frankenstein-Minda Webber.
The book that surprised me the most was J.R Ward’s Lover Unbound (Vishous & Jane). That she made Jane into a Ghost that can materialize.

Karen, you got it on the VC review. I’ll let you know how it is. Since I got the book as a gift from a friend who I got hooked on Veuve, I owe him the read & review. Had he sent a methusaleh of Veuve, I’d have reviewed it right quick.

Calila, you have some divine comfort reads! And yup, I think you can decide your tbr pile isn’t that big after all. In fact, I wish I was as caught up as you!
colinfirth, what’s your favorite Garwood? I love them all, but I think … was it Bewtiched that was about the not-so-good witch? Btw, I want to read a Singh book. Heard great things and just haven’t managed to add it to the tbr pile yet.
Oh great. Here I go, adding MORE books! Aiyiyi!
Anna Swede, as yes, Devereaux! Now I’m going to want to dig her books out, too. She write the BEST sexual tension EVER. Excellent comfort read. Her books will reall sweep you away!
Joy, Suzanne Enoch’s Rick and Sam series is PHENOMENAL. One of my favorite romcom suspense books. They remind me of those terrific 40s movies where the heroines were sparky and tough and the heroes were sparky and tough right back.
nancyg, hear, hear! Yes, the book is always better than the movie! In a movie, you can WATCH what happens, but you don’t FEEL it from inside. I love that about books.
Archer, when’s the Kleypas coming out? I don’t have that on my calendar and canNOT miss it!
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 1:52 pm #
Kimberly W, wowza! You MUST have hated the Feather book to have thrown it! Yikes! I have to say that I’m in awe of your organizational abilities. Can you come to my house and do mine for me? Every time I go to organize them, I find one I really, really want to read RIGHT NOW and then I end up curled up on the couch and my tbr is still a mess.
LisaK, I have a stomach of steel and I absolutely LOVE books about knights! I’m going to see if I can order them for my Kindle this evening. I’ve made a list …
Angela, I just bought Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers’ Soul for a friend of mine who has five (count ‘em – FIVE) cats and is always fostering others. Did you like it? I think she’ll enjoy it just because of the title.
Susan M, one of my non-reading friends (I know — where’s she been?) has just started reading books like a starving woman. The book that started her? Twilight. I’m looking forward to reading it!
elsie, J. R. Ward has surprised me many times. She’s very talented and perfectly matched to her genre. I have books in boxes, on shelves, under beds, in shopping bags — they’re plentiful and stashed everywhere, so I feel your pain!

Are they organized (and if so, how?) by my bed are ones I want or need to read now but there are others in there too. One bookcase is in alpha order and another by author.
The book you just finished: How to Knit a Wild Bikini By Chrisitie Ridgway
The book you’ll read next: Unravel me by Christie Rigeway (friend pimp this series)
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Sweet Liar Jude Deveraux
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: just about each and everyone of that Karen Rose books. Esp Die for me.

I have a nice big pile of TBR books waiting for me at the library.
I’ve had a lot of time on my hands and I’ve gone through so many books!
I devour a new book almost too quickly and go back to reread at a more leisurely pace. I did that with Sabrina’s Don’t Bargain with the Devil – halfway through again.

How many books are in your TBR pile: There are so many I don´t have the energy to count XÖþ

The book you just finished: I recently finished Elizabeth Hoyt´s To Beguile a Beast and loved it. Right now I´m reading Terry Pratchett´s Nation, it´s brilliant and I´ve only read like the first 5 chapters
The book you’ll read next: Probably, Brisingr by C.Paolini
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Tuesdays with Morrie, Unreasonable Summer by Dixie Browning, Trollbunden by Margit Sandemo and Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: HP and the Half Blood Prince knocked me on my a** and the ending of Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind was a bit surprising :Ö)

My TBR pile has been doing very nicely lately. I plowed through a bunch of them in the past weeks.
There are about 20 to 30 books in my TBR pile. That doesn’t count TBB or WILTRIIHTT piles, lol.
There really is no order to them. I have a bunch in my laundry room from the UBS. Another stack next to my bed from a friend. And about 8 on my nightstand.
I just finished One Reckless Summer by Toni Blake. WOW!
I am reading A Little Black Gown by Elizabeth Boyle
My read over and over book: Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, In the Bed of the Duke by Cathy Maxwell. Oh, you said only one. Sorry, there are so many to choose from, lol.
Oh, Karen Rose’s Die for Me – YES!, and Teresa Mederios’ Yours Until Dawn – masterfully done, that one.
I’ve also been remiss in not gushing unabashedly about my goddess books and for that I ask forgiveness. By hook or by crook, I’ve gotten my hands on all of them and am pretty impressed by that and have managed to read just about all of them that have come out this year. I even managed to turn my husband onto Karen Rose’s books. You’ve a new fan. Ladies, I’ll work on him for the rest but I ask your patience in this, lol.

Aly, I love Nora’s Chesapeake Bay Series, especially the one about the artist. I just adore that one! I like your way of marking your tbr books so that they can be shelved with the rest. That may well be the way I should go, too. Thanks for the insight!
Thanks for the date, Archer! I’ve got it on my calendar right now and boy, I’m excited!
Judy F, what did you think of the Ridgway? She has a very bright and fun style and I think of her as the perfect beach read.
Kathy, you do the second pass read slower … I have a friend who does the exact same thing. She rushes through the first time, then sits down and slowly savors it a second.
Solveig, I was shocked the HP and the Half Blood Prince, too! But then those books became more and more surprising, which really increased their draw, at least it did for me. Great books! And Tuesdays With Morrie is one of my all time favorites. It’s not a comfort read, but it’s close.

OK…TBR Pile…I haven’t culled it lately, it’s probably about 5, but it’s looking more like 75 because I’ve been putting the ones I read back on the pile rather than filing them onto my bookshelves or into the box I donate to the cancer ward once a month.
Are they organized…they will be once I go through them. See Above
I just re-read Linda Howard’s To Die For and Drop Dead Gorgeous (this series always makes me laugh)
Book I’m Going to Read Next: *Sigh* Oracle 10g SQL for Oracle (Expert).
Julie Garwood: The Lion’s Lady/ Jo Goodman: One Forbidden Evening/ Kathleen Woodwess: Shanna are two of the many books I go back to over and over.
I’m not really suprised by any endings of books.

TBR pile – hmm, in general I’m a fast reader, so there really isn’t much of a pile. My mom did send me about 10-15 books that I haven’t even really touched. I see the library as my TBR pile.
Generally, it’s in a pile next to my bed or in my nightstand.
I just finished Karen White’s The Memory of Water, which was interesting. The ending was WAY to predictable, so that’s a major flaw. I’ve started reading David Liss’s The Whiskey Rebels. Generally, I stay away from American historical fiction because the plethora of historical errors, annoys me to no end. Hopefully, this one won’t disappoint, but I don’t have high expectations. I think I’m going to re-read Sabrina’s Heiress series, again, before Wed Him Before You Bed Him comes out.
I’ll read anything by JQ, again; Suzanne’s Lessons in Love series; my jewelry books for inspiration; anything by Jane Austen, and I’m sure that there’s more that I can’t think of, right now. Oh – Julie Garwood historicals – love them!
I can’t think of a book that has surprised me. Maybe The Thirteenth Tale, but I knew something was coming.

How many books are in your TBR pile: about 20 and I thought that was a lot until I read what other people had on their TBR list.
Are they organized (and if so, how?) More or less. They are sideways on top of the keeper books.
The book you just finished: What would Jane Austen Do? By Laurie Brown. It was a time travel set in Jane Austen’s time. I really enjoyed it and finished it in about 1 1/2 days!
The book you’ll read next: I am reading Lorraine Heath’s To Marry an Heiress now. Next in line after that is either Madeline Hunter’s “By Design” or Karen Hawkins “The Seduction of Sara”.
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: Romance book I have re-read is “This Rake of Mine” by Elizabeth Boyle. I never get tired of it.
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most: Eloisa James “The Taming of the Duke”. I wanted to love this book so much because I loved the hero and heroine, but was disappointed that they didn’t show themselves to be themselves. Then in the end – they said – I knew it was you. I was like what? Where is the come uppenance of doing that? Is that all the story was? Wasn’t happy about that.

Karen, Morrie saved my life :Ö) Honestly! I used to suffer from panic attacks but after I read his book and realised my life could be so much worse it got so easy to handle them. I realised that what I was suffering from were really just uncomfortable chemical processes in my body that I could handle very easily. I´ve never had one since. And I read it regularly to remind me that everyday life is easy most of the time ;Ö) I also agree with you on HP. I just love the books (I´ve got them both in english and icelandic). I just can´t wait for the 6th movie :Ö)

They are organized according to genre and alphabetically by author’s name so I can find the one I want on my way out the door and throw it in my purse for an emergency read!
Just finished? Don’t Bargain with the Devil LOVED IT !!!
Next on the list? The Devil’s Bargain by Edith Layton. Went on a buying binge of her books I haven’t read when I heard of her passing. Great lady, great books.
Comfort reads? Her Master and Commander by Karen Hawkins
The Marriage Bed by Claudia Dain
Untouched by Anna Campbell
The Mysterious Miss M by Diane Gaston
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase
Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas

Samantha, I love Marian Keyes. Someone gave me one of her books for Christmas and it sat around for about three months, and then I read it, and was hooked. SUCH good, fun reads!
Judy F, I’m glad you found Ridgway. She writes fun, clever books that will make you grin and sigh at the same time! It’s so good when you find the perfect book at the perfect time.
Pesky, I love that you donate your books to the cancer ward. That’s a GREAT idea. I’ve got two boxes of donate-able books. I’ll call the hospital tomorrow and see if I can do that here, too.
As for surprises, it doesn’t have to be the ending that surprises you — but character development or plot twist or whatnot!
Janae, what’s The Thirteenth Tale? I’m curious! I love Garwood’s books, too. AND Sabrina’s. I bet we have a lot of the same ones on our keeper shelves!
Karen Hawkins on 15 Jun 2009 at 7:36 pm #
Jamie, I need to read that Austen time travel. I read one sort of like that and it was actually pretty darn good. I hope you enjoy The Seduction of Sara – it’s one of my favorites. Well, after The Laird Who Loved Me. THAT is my current favorite. And I KNOW you’ll love “By Design.” It’s on my Keeper Shelf and I’ve read it so many times the corners of the pages are curled.
Solveig, I’m so glad you’re ok! Panic attacks are horrible — I had them the year I went through my divorce. I don’t ‘do’ change well. You know, I am DREADING the movie. I simply can’t be as good as the movie and I just know I’ll want it to be. It really is an inspirational book — one of the few that made me smile and weep at the same time. Do you know when it’s coming out? Who will be in it?
Kim, we’ll let you stay if you’ll make us all some chocolate cake. We have a price and it’s pure chocolate!
Louisa, ah the great emergency read! That’s so cool! I was sad to hear about Layton’s passing, too. It’s sweet that you’re reading her backlist. And Louisa, you AREN’T talking about Karen Rose’s not-yet-out-book, are you? You wouldn’t be THAT cruel, would you? WE ALL WANT TO READ IT, TOO!

When I realized I spent more money on books each month than I did on food (couldn’t tell by lookin’ tho), I decided to utilize my public library mostly. Now I go online and find books then order them in; I also occassionally pick up a stack at Half Price Books so usually have about 8-10 waiting plus whatever the library sends me – often another 10+ books. Absolutely no order, just how they come out of my book bag. But what I consider my “real” TBR pile is my Goodreads To-Read & Already Checked Out book lists; there’s over 100 there that I couldn’t afford otherwise! I make it a point to purchase books from my fav authors that I want to support, tho.
Just finished “Cry Mercy” from Mariah Stewart tonite and have Heather Graham’s “Nightwalker” on deck.
My fav comfort read is a little-known book called “God on a Harley” by Joan Black (her only one, I think). Its also my airport waiting &/or flying book. When I’ve gone on trips with my girlfriends, I make them all read it too! Backups are old Mercedes Lackey fantasies; reminds me of what love and honor are supposed to be!
I’ve gotta say K-Rose books (all of them) for the twist(s)! How do you DO that, Goddess?

How many books are in your TBR pile: too many
Are they organized (and if so, how?) hmmm…yes and no, the TBR on the book shelves are organized by author/series/genre, the boxes of books are organized by author…but mixed up beyond that
The book you just finished: DON’T TEMPT ME by Loretta Chase (shhh, I have an ARC for review)
The book you’ll read next: PASSION by Lisa Valdez, I’ve heard so much about this book, I finally found a copy @ the USB I had to scoop up
A book that you’ve read over and over as a comfort read: if only there were just one! LOL I like to reread my Johanna Lindsey, Lisa Kleypas, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sandra Hill, Julie Garwood, etc….books…just depends on my mood, though I usually reach for the “old skool” books, late 80’s-90’s
A book with an ending or plot twist that surprised you the most? I really can’t think of one right now

You mean the one that doesn’t come out until August? The one that I have a personally signed ARC of, that kept me up ALL NIGHT the day after I arrived?? THAT Karen Rose book? The one my 75 year old mother is driving 80 miles to fetch the copy Karen signed for HER because she and her British friends (all in their sixties and seventies) LOVE Karen’s books?? Mom told me she was coming to see me Sunday, but I KNOW she is coming to get the book I haven’t mailed to her yet. I should never have told her how good it is!!
There, is that cruel enough??? I shall slink back into my cave laughing maniacally, stroking my copy of I CAN SEE YOU and muttering “My Precious” now.
What did I do to merit such an honor? Check out the acknowledgments page. Oh wait! You can’t until August!!

Karen – The Thirteenth Tale is a gothic novel by Dianne Sutterfield. It’s about a reclusive writer who has determined to finally tell her life story before she dies. She picks this woman who has written short pieces about siblings. In a way it’s, also, a story about books. I first read it after it came out. I lead the discussion when my book group read it in January. It’s a debut novel, too. Set all sorts of records, etc, when it was released in 2006. Oh – I have to say that The Lady Whistledown anthologies have some of my favorite stories. I love Sophia’s and Max’s story.
Janae on 15 Jun 2009 at 10:28 pm #

Karen, the movie is coming in July and it probably won´t be as good as the book as there is so much material
there won´t be room for but I´ve seen the trailer and it looks promising. I´m so glad they descided to make two movies out of the last book :Ö) Have you seen the Tuesday´s with Morrie movie with Hank Azaria og Jack Lemmon?
