Facebook Official

Claudia DainOn Writing!
So far life has been kind and my grown kids are able to come home every Sunday for Sunday dinner around the dining room table. We catch up on the details of our week, the victories, the annoyances, but mostly Big D and I sit and listen while the kids compare notes about what’s going on in their world. This is what it sounds like:
Daughter: I saw Sally Supertall at a party on Wednesday.
Son #2: Was she with her boyfriend?
Daughter: No, they broke up.
Son #1: Really? Are you sure?
Daughter: Yeah, it was on her Facebook.
Son #2: It must be true then. It’s Facebook official. I ran into Drew Dreadlocks at the mall. He’s engaged. I checked her out on Facebook. She knows Mandy Mole, that girl we went to summer camp with. I recognized her from her Facebook page.
Son #1: Mandy Mole? She facebooked me last week. She’s cousins with that guy I took driver’s ed with.
Daughter: Really? That cute guy? Wait, I’m going to check his Facebook out right now.
With Facebook, you can know the whole world. And know you know the whole world. But nothing is official, no breakup, no wedding, no graduation, no move, no offer of employment until it appears on your Facebook page. My daughter is in a serious relationship at the moment and it was a Big Deal when she changed her Facebook status from unattached to in a relationship. He was watching over her shoulder as she made the change, and they smiled at each other lovingly when it was completed. They’re not engaged, but they’re Facebook Official.
I am new to the Facebook Universe. My profile is pitiful. Nothing I do will ever be official until my Facebook page pronounces it so.
I am in deep trouble.
Do you Facebook? What does your Facebook page say about you? What do you think about the Facebook phenomenon?

I facebook! Just started and I LOVE it. Was myspacing, but it’s sort of . . . awkward. Facebook, however, is the bomb. Found lots of my high school friends and acquaintances, get to connect with readers and other authors and I just love it.
It’s a watercooler gossip center right here on my laptop!
I loooooove it and it’s amazingly easy to use, even for non-puter peeps like me.

The “kids” -Jeffrey-14, Chelsea-16 and Matthew-19 all set me up for both Facebook and My Space and I have never gone into to it to add all the information they want and need. I’m sort of a private person so I think it’s too much information but the “kids” want the world to know all about them.

I just started, and I confess I find it a bit confusing. An Italian fan sent me a request for something. Facebook put the request part in Italian (it was a “compleanno request”). I don’t read Italian. I clicked on “Maybe” because, well, I don’t read Italian and didn’t know what it was, and then Facebook told me I “ignored the request.” Huh. Since it only gave me a choice of No and Maybe, I don’t know what else I could have done. Since I don’t read Italian and all.
So this is going to be interesting.
BTW, did y’all know that the Goddess Blogs have a Facebook page now? We’re Facebook Official!

I Facebook! I’m gonna check you ladies out! I love it, I love to look at the photo albums people post. If you go on my Facebook, you will see a compilation of Johnny Depp photos! It embarasses my teenage daughter, but I live for that sort of stuff! Mwahaha!

Clearly, I love facebook. However, I’m one of those slightly psychotic people who make themselves unsearchable. If you’re not my friend on FB, then you’re definitely not going to be able to even see that i’m ON facebook at all. I love it because it keeps me up to date on all my friends, or acquaintances lives. plus, it’s a great procrastination tool when i really don’t feel like doing work.
cail on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:13 am #
oops. Margaret… i forgot to send you a suggestion to friend Claudia!!
Ayse on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:13 am #
I facebook…. used to myspace, but had to close it since all my friends seem to prefer fb. I actually like myspace better since you can customize the page to suit you. FB is a bit bland.
I actually tried closing my fb, but reopened it when a friend posted old pics. Argh I hate that people can just post pics online.
My page used to be full of applications, but I got bored and deleted most.
I’ve won books in the book groups and really enjoy them (great help when need to remember a book name) so I don’t think I will delete my account anytime soon

Lately I’ve become more interested in blogs than FB
Karen Hawkins on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:22 am #
I’ve been amazed at how strong the romance community is on fb! I’ve met some really cool people — and connected with some authors whose work I love, but I’ve somehow never met.
It IS scary that people can put up pictures from your high school album. That, I don’t like.
LoriHandeland on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:23 am #
I just started to Facebook too when we got the Goddess Page. I spent a couple of days messing with it and had to scale back. I could play on there A LOT.
Son #2 thought it was hysterical that I was now on Facebook. I fail to see the humor, but with him I usually do.
Susan M on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:24 am #
I facebook. Which reminds me I need to check it today. I don’t have a whole lot of friends but I can keep in touch with some old friends from college and family. I also have myspace and I really like how you can customize your page and add music. I keep both because my brother does not have a facebook page, just a myspace page.
Julia London on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:24 am #
I Facebook. Sort of. I have a facebook page, but I really don’t know who my friends are or who I’ve friended. I am always delighted to see someone I know. I like it a lot. I also have a myspace page, but myspace seems geared towards the really young. Facebook is definitely more my speed.
I Twitter, too. Does anyone twitter?

I’ve been Facebooking for nearly a year. I used to MySpace, but it can get so cluttered that I don’t know what the heck is going on with anyone’s page. Too much visual & audio blasting.
Facebook is fun but I don’t check in on a daily basis. I also Ravelry. That’s a place for knitters/crocheters to display their projects and see what everybody else is doing. Also, there are groups within that umbrella group. Elizabeth Boyle knits, has a knitting blog in addition to her author’s blog and is on Ravelry. The woman knits some fine stuff.
Oh yeah. I also Twitter. I have my cell phone set so I can see when the grandkids write on a FB wall or Twitter. Pointless, but fun.
I also have a long string of web cam sites and blogs to be checked every day. Who has time to clean house anyway? I’m busy.
Deb Marlowe on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:45 am #
I haven’t taken the Facebook plunge yet, but Harlequin Historicals has their own page and I’ve contributed to that. Last month they did the “Who would you invite to a fantasy dinner party” feature and I sent in my fantasy list of a rocking dinner party. That was fun.
One more thing I don’t have time for!
Karen Hawkins on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:50 am #
One computer program I love is SKYPE. My daughter and I skype all of our calls now — it’s so cool to see her expressions, plus, she’ll show me her latest art work and will even play songs that she’s working on for her band. I love it!
Btw, any of you check up on what your kids are REALLY doing using your myspace and facebook? I do it all of the time, but shhhh! Don’t tell them!
Michelle B on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:53 am #
I don’t Facebook. 19 year old DD#2 does and doesn’t want her Mom there. My youngest brother has tried to entice me into it as well. He says DD’s site is nice and nothing to worry about. I’m a scrapbooker so the idea of posting pictures appeals to me, but for now I think I will remain a non-FBer.
Margaret, my 23 year old DD#1 is a knitter and is on Ravelry. I dont’ knit but love to see what she creates and that Ravely site is wonderful.
Freedom Writer on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:56 am #
I have been on Facebook for almost a year. I am friends with most of the goddesses who are on Facebook, but my Facebook page has my real name on it not my Freedom Writer id from the blog so sometimes people get confused and don’t realize who I am. I started out with just my kids and one or two of my kids friends, but I have gained more friends through my friends here on TGB in recent months. I like being able to see what everyone is doing. I have seen several people online, but have not been brave enough to open a Facebook chat with anyone yet. I love Facebook it is a fun time waster.
Claudia Dain on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:00 am #
I’m glad (I think) that Handmaiden Kim FORCED me to Facebook. Everybody’s doing it! I really do hate to miss a good party. I still can’t quite figure out what I’m supposed to be doing there, or how to manage all the boxes. Is it for instant chatting? An email substitute? A public discourse that is forever recorded?
Ayse on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:06 am #
One thing I really hate is that when somebody tags you in a photo in their album anyone from your friend list can see that persons entire album. That’s why I deleted all of my pics.
PJ on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:07 am #
I remember my niece talking about Facebook back when she was in college (it was just open to college students at that time) but I really didn’t “get” it. Now I do! I’ve been on Facebook for several months. You can’t see my profile unless I confirm you as a friend. I’m a bit paranoid about that too. The only part of my page that I open up to everyone is my book reviews since I want everyone to go buy the romance books I review. (I only post reviews of the books I liked)
I found one of my college roommates through FB and it’s been wonderful catching up with one another. I’ve also connected with a lot of terrific authors who don’t blog. Truthfully, I spend way too much time there but it’s just so much fun.
Glad to see The Goddess Blogs on FB. I joined as soon as Kim put it up.
Susan M on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:13 am #

I have just revived my blog, so I haven’t made it to Facebook or Twitter. My kids are too young for Facebook or myspace, so they’re off my radar.
Bronte on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:31 am #
I do facebook but I have to admit I find it hard to give it much attention – it can start requiring a lot of time and energy. Claudia, its very interesting how information starts to spread on facebook. A friend of mine won’t join because his now ex-girlfriend pretty well much announced their breakup by changing her relationship status to single and removing all his photos from her albums. Everyone knew about it from facebook before they even spoke to the people involved. I thinks its slightly scary the amount of information that can be found about a person, and so I’m a little cautious about it.
SheridanLA on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:35 am #
I love, love, love Facebook.. I have gotten back in touch with people I have been trying to hunt down for years.. reacquainted with former colleagues, put together events and get togethers all via FB… I chat with friends and they ask about something that was on my page (in the status).. My friends make me laugh as we get into commenting back and forth on various things.. I was giggling so hard just last night over commentary between some friends and I.
It also is a nice distraction when I am slow at work or just need a break.
Yasmin on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:38 am #
Facebook What? I dont have a facebook page and it took me forever to get my myspace page up and another forever to decorate it (I didnt know how). The only thing I check on a regular basis is TGB and my email.
PJ on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:39 am #
Thank you, Sabrina, Lori and Claudia for adding me to your FB friends!
Claudia Dain on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:42 am #
Sheridan, you make it sound wonderful! I want that! I want to giggle and bond in Facebook Land.
Bronte, I think you’ve nailed what I find scary about it…the lack of control over information output. But, according to my kids (my main source on FB protocol), your friend could have launched his own salvo of information on his facebook page and diluted his ex-girlfriend’s moves. Still, having that much information floating around scares me a little.
Okay, a lot.
Yasmin on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:47 am #
I ditto Judy. I havent even visited facebook.com.
Kay–what is Twitter?
SheridanLA on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:48 am #
Claudia, you are welcome to stalk my profile and the conversation – it had to do with a picture I put up yesterday… it might not be as funny to others, but had me almost in tears. My friends and I trade one-liners quite often – but then most of my friends have as twisted a sense of humor as I do, so it all works.
other then the giggles, it has been an awesome networking tool – both with friendships and with colleagues. I have passed on resumes, connected people traveling in other cities, found out travel info, located crew and recommended talent.. all in one handy dandy place
SheridanLA on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:50 am #
oh.. and twitter is just more then I want to deal with.. and more then I want to hear from people. One of my former co-workers twitters up a storm and shares on her FB status.. it gets a bit old… but i can see where it might be interesting to check out now and then – just not all the time for me.

I Facebook and Twitter! Both are addicting and I spend way too much time with them, but without them I would not have found so many old friends!
Claudia Dain on 29 Jan 2009 at 10:54 am #
KarenR, that’s how I feel. I’m hoping to get my feet underneath me and find my rhythm with Facebook. I LOVE TGB, and it’s the first blog I ever posted on! So I do have hope I can become a Facebook veteran.
To all who ‘talk’ to me on Facebook, if I don’t answer you, it’s because I either A) am not sure how or B) haven’t worked out my Facebook Response Schedule yet.
And mucho kisses to all who have wished me well today! For those of you who Facebook, you know that I’m sick today. For those of you who don’t Facebook, you probably think I’m being very unfriendly today. Sorry! It’s just that I’m not up to my normal energy levels at all.
Janae on 29 Jan 2009 at 11:08 am #
I just started, yesterday, because I received a ton of friend requests in one day. One of my sisters has been telling me to do it forever. So far it’s pretty cool. I’ve found friends that I lost contact with after high school, but have known my whole life. Probably the best find, yet, is this boy (who’s now in his 20s) that I used to babysit. His family was my second family. His parents were my model for a healthy relationship. I lost contact with the family after his mom moved to FL to be near her family after her dh died unexpectedly in his early 40s.
The whole FB thing is interesting. I see people from my hometown listed as friends who wouldn’t even talk to each other in school – elementary, middle, or high school. They’ve finally grown up. It should make for an interesting hs reunion in 2 years.
colinfirthfan on 29 Jan 2009 at 11:13 am #
I facebook. I connected with friends I hadn’t seen or heard from in 15 years. I don’t check my facebook often but it is a great procrastination tool. I have friended tons of family as well so its great to see their pictures.
SheridanLA on 29 Jan 2009 at 11:14 am #
Janae, one cool thing a bunch of my old HS buds are doing is they are planning a reunion not just of our class (since we just had our official one) but of the 4 years or so around us, so we can reunite with friends we had in other classes. There are a lot of people who are planning on going to that that did not hit our official one (which sucked). They have created a group on FB and a website and we are up to date on all the planning and events. Pretty cool.
and there are a few people I was not fond of in HS.. have not accepted the friend request on a few – perhaps if I run into them and see they changed a bit.. or I just might remain shallow and petty and never accept! HA!

Question to Karen Rose: Will you be going to NJRW this year(October 23-24)? Laurie and I attend every year also all the Ladies from the Readers Group(road trip)…this is when we get our stalker action going with all our favorite authors.
Karen Hawkins on 29 Jan 2009 at 11:24 am #
Sheridan, that’s so cool! I signed up for my hs, too, but just the year I graduated in. I’ve heard you should look for the years ahead and behind, too. I’m just too busy lately to do it.
I’m the same way about twitter, which lets you update to a blog or facebook or myspace page from a cellphone … I just don’t need it and it’s overkill. Maybe if I had a more interesting life . . .

Claudia–You’re totally welcome *G*
I LOVE Facebook! Yes, the Goddesses have a group. Join!
Cail–you’re incredibly hard to find on FB. Kathy told me you were on there and I couldn’t find you to save my life. lol.
I have a MySpace but I don’t do as much as I do on FB. Also have a Twitter but I forget about it all the time. Did y’all know you can do an app that feeds your twitter into your FB status bar? Two birds w/one stone.
SuzyQ on 29 Jan 2009 at 11:51 am #

Suzanne Enoch on 29 Jan 2009 at 12:16 pm #
Is that what “friended” is from? I’ve gotten emails saying so and so is waiting to “friend” me, and since I have no idea what being friended entails, I’ve put them all aside for later consideration. Do you have to bring gifts? Do you have to have your own Facebook page? I find it all very confusing. *g*
Connie Hettler on 29 Jan 2009 at 12:18 pm #
Kim or SuzyQ, can you help me, how do I find the Goddess Blogs on FB?
I feel like a technology virgin, I am new to this blog, just started texting on my phone and now it is FB. I signed up because of a request I had from a friend, then I realized I do not have that many friends. =( very sad. It seems work and kids got in the way of friendships, and so I started meeting people online, and one day I realized that some of my best friends are people that I have never really met.
dbrown3400 on 29 Jan 2009 at 12:27 pm #
I enjoy Facebook for catching up with my relatives and friends here at TGB a/w/a various authors. Getting family pics is great; I wouldn’t see them otherwise. The only thing I don’t like is learning certain aspects of both DDs lives. Sometimes they are so sad.
I haven’t mastered most of the applications and don’t like the games my daughters want me to play. Who wants to be a werewolf and get smacked in the face? Guess I’ll just keep checking in a few times a day to see what’s going on. It’s fun “talking” with the people I know.
Lisa W. on 29 Jan 2009 at 12:48 pm #

I think Twitter is a tad on the boring side. From my view, it seems to be all about “me, me, me”. You can do that on FB but so much more. I like finding out what folks are up to.
On another front, I was looking at new gadgets for my Vista sidebar and came across Sirius satellite radio. I don’t have a physical Sirius but I can listen thru the computer for $7.95 a month. I just signed up for a test drive and am currently listening to music from “my” era. The 50’s. Tutti Fruitti makes me want to get my groove on. Same with Great Balls of Fire. I can crank the old ‘puter and get some housework done while I do an old lady’s version of the Bop. :-O

I Facebook and Myspace. I am still getting comfortable with Facebook. I don’t think that I understand its various capabilities yet.

Connie,
In the upper right hand corner of the facebook screen there should be a search box. Just type in The Goddess Blogs and hit enter. It should be the first page that comes up. You’ll see the banner as the picture.
Claudia Dain on 29 Jan 2009 at 1:33 pm #
You guys! This has been the best topic ever! I’m finding out so much, and it sounds like you are, too. It’s so hard (at least for me) to keep track of all the changes in technology and the millions of new ways to be “connected.”
As for high school…do I really want to reconnect with those people? The last high school reunion I went to, not only did I not recognize their faces, I didn’t recognize their names!! I know you guys much, much better. *g*
JudyPatooty on 29 Jan 2009 at 1:44 pm #
Claudia. All of you. How could you? Now you’ve got me hooked on Facebook. Just a couple of hours ago, I was a Facebook virgin and now … I’ve just spent my whole lunch hour friending people I recognized from TGB and setting up my profile and just generally goofing off.
Well, since you’ve “deflowered” me, you must all do the right thing and offer for my hand in marriage.
Ann in IL on 29 Jan 2009 at 1:59 pm #
Oh dear, it sounds like one needs a teenager to be able to understand all these places. I’m proud of my self by being able to post on this blog.
Not on Facebook. Not on MySpace. Not on Twitter. (never even heard of that one) And you can go to these places from your cell phone ???????????? Oooooh my goodness.
I am a non-techno dinosaur.
Anyone remember when all phones were black and attached to the cord in the wall and they had DIALS or operators. ???
Janae on 29 Jan 2009 at 2:01 pm #
Sheridan, I must be shallow, too, because I don’t want to be friends with people from hs just because we’re from the same town. Maybe if I meet up with them, and they’ve changed, I’d consider the friend status. Like you I was not fond of hs. I couldn’t wait to leave. I didn’t go to my 10 year reunion because I knew it’d be bad from the info I was sent. I’m undecided about the 20 year one next year. I haven’t even been back to my hometown in 13 years. Fortunately, all my family in MT has moved to Billings, which makes the visits home tolerable.
I must check out the Goddess Blogs, though.
LoriHandeland on 29 Jan 2009 at 2:04 pm #
I have no idea of all the “stuff” on FB. I spent two days doing the friend stuff and setting up my page and had to put it away or risk being sucked in forever. I will have to go back later and do more once I’ve detoxed a bit.
But halt, stop and whoa!! There’s a werewolf game there? Say it isn’t so!

I definitely remember letters prefixes, LauraG. I’m from Houston TX. My parents business was Valentine 3-something or other. Can’t remember. I hated it when all digits came in. My thinking was who the heck would be able to remember all those numbers. LOL How times have changed. I can instantly recall all sorts of numbers nowadays. The business was in the city but we lived in the country about halfway between Houston & Galveston. Tiny town, large rural community. Hence the central operator and party lines. For a couple of years, we even had crank phones. Ha. Who remembers those?

Usually I lurk here but …. Yessssss … I FaceBook. I didn’t want to. But this friend kept nagging. Unfortunately for me, this friend is a former teacher … so she knows how to motivate procrastinators. She is also a writer. So she knows how to use action words . like centrifugal force & death & dismemberment to create a “mood’.
It was strange. I just suddenly got in the Mood to FaceBook. Don’t know why… But I finally signed up, made A Page and poof … a whole world of personal information was at my finger tips! I know what my nieces are up to before their parents do. I can keep track of my cousins in Europe. And I can keep tabs on my DD. The ease with which I can Spying upon my kids is ASTOUNDING!
* maniacal laughter*
I always know what’s going on with them. With everyone really! Well everyone who is a friend. That’s the best Part about FaceBook. I’m in The Know about people I want to know about. That’s so cool.
Yes, the Romance community is Well represented on FaceBook. Thank you for taking the time to make A Page & post on it. I like knowing what’s going on in your lives. Doesn’t matter if you post about your new book, the frustrations of writing on a deadline, or your cousin’s pet cat’s hair ball.

Sheridan, It was some of the people for me, too. College was infinitely more fun – much bigger town more stuff to do, etc.

Facebook is cyber heroin to me. I’m addicted. Recently reconnected with the boy who taught me to read in kindergarten and moved away in 3rd grade. It’s been surreal especially when he posted our grammar school class pics.
Also FB my bff’s cousin in italy who doesn’t speak english but accepts all friends. He posted a nude picture he took of himself in the shower. I’m enjoy the “why would you do that publicly” element of it.
Oh, even more shocking, someout outed my little cousin last week on FB(not maliciously). I think if she was ready for me to know she’s gay, she’d have preferred to tell me herself.
My french employers who like to make up words, has blocked access to all “sites of participative collaboration”!! The couldn’t just say social networking despite the tons ofarticulate Enlish speakers they employ.
Enough rambling. Excited for tomorrow’s special guest!

One last thing about FaceBook
I find it interesting to see how different & yet how similar people’s lives are.
And
What does my Facebook page say about me?
Umm… I’m crazy … kind of sort of? What can I say? When my writer friend insulted my ‘kewpie doll “ Profile Picture, I Had to fight back. Unfortunately my plan backfired. My friend had nothing Bad to say about my new profile picture. She Liked IT. Jeez. Of course I should have know better than to try & get a romance writer to be shocked or “appalled” at someone my age wearing spandex… Yes, I know …I’m crazy … kind of sort of.
Oh well. Okay, I’ll go back to lurking now ….

Julie, don’t lurk! You’re one of us! I’m with you — it’s addictive. I’ve had to lecture myself all week about getting my work done, but it’s hard . . . must check fb just one . . . more . . . time . . . !!!!

Ok I have a question for you FB veterans. If you get a friend request email, how do you check to see if you know this person before you confirm?
Sabrina Jeffries on 29 Jan 2009 at 8:31 pm #
Hey, any GB’er who wants to friend me will be instantly confirmed. It’s been so cool seeing how many of you are on there!
Judy, I can’t believe you’ve been deflowered! Can we just handfast for a while before we run off to Gretna Green?
The one thing I’m finding I’m not interested in is the gaming. Someone invited me to join a pirate crew, so I went to check out what it was. When I saw gaming, that was it. Not into gaming.
freshechelle on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:10 pm #
But sabrina, have you tried geo challenge? It’s an addictive geography game. I was comitted to beating an old friend’s score after he introduced me to the game. When I finally bested him, he deleted me as a friend which I thought was brilliantly funny. His wife’s score is better than his too. Wonder what kind of cold shoulder she gets.

I want to thank all the TGB who friended me today! I love confirming people I ‘know.’ This has been a fun day. Thanks!
Julie on 29 Jan 2009 at 9:14 pm #
Hey Sabrina Did confirm me right away!
Wow! Thanks Sabrina!
Karen said “Julie, don’t lurk! You’re one of us!”
Karen You wouldn’t say that if you’d ever seen me in spandex!
Actually the three people who “supported” that profile pic were Romance Lit writers. How interesting is that?
A case of Women supporting women in a possitive way!? That is why I read & love the genre!
