The Sins of Lord Easterbrook–and sins of indulgence
Jan 27th 2009
Madeline HunterMadeline Hunter & On Writing! & When Goddesses Fall To Earth
The release date of any new book is a big day for the author. Today is especially important to me because The Sins of Lord Easterbrook is officially on sale.
It is the last book in a series, so I say good-bye to characters I love today. Also, Easterbrook is one of those men, the kind readers glom onto when he first appears, so launching his story is both exciting and scary. To learn more about the book, you can visit my website here
Easterbrook has lots of sins both in his past and his present. Some are sins of self-indulgence. That has me thinking about my own sinful indulgences.
There isn’t really anything sinful about mine. I just feel deliciously bad when I enjoy them, like I am breaking some rule or getting away with something. I think that is because some of them involve things that I couldn’t afford when I was younger and was watching every dime. And newer ones involve “wasting” time, which I can’t afford now.
But some of them, like savoring an absolutely fresh, perfectly soft, glazed donut, are simply sinfully wonderful.
Make- up is one indulgence for me. Not my everyday make up. ”Trying out something I saw in a magazine” make up. I experience a moment of daring and excess even if it costs less than ten dollars. Maybe the fact the nuns wouldn’t let us wear make-up in school adds to the sinful thrill I still get.
What are your favorite sinful indulgences? (If you post any comment today I will put your name in a hat for a contest that is just for this blog. There will be three winners, and you can choose any book from my backlist of titles on my website —except the anthology, because I never received the normal number of copies of that, sorry! Winners will be posted late tonight, and also contacted directly.)
Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones?
Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss?
Are your favorite indulgences free?
Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences?
Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual?
Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence?

Ooh, I get to be first! Clearly, there was a reason I woke up at this ungodly hour this morning, despite going to bed past midnight.
Ah, but I digress. My sinful indulgences include jigsaw puzzles (talk about time wasters! But I do love them), TV *G*, and hot bubble baths. I LOVE soaking in a hot bath. It’s so gloriously sensual. I like a number of food indulgences, but I’m trying to get away from those, so I won’t mention them.
Already ordered my copy of Sins of Lord Easterbrook, and I can’t wait until it arrives!

My most sinful indulgence is reading romance novels when I should be reading for school. Right now I am reading THE SOUND AND THE FURY and THINGS FALL APART for my classes, and all I want to do is curl up with some Nora Roberts. But by doing that, I fail to finish my class books, and that is not a good thing.
Little indulgences are the best because you don’t feel too bad when you partake–like I love having a chocolate bar every now and then, and I know it’s not as bad as other things I could be indulging in.
I think the “sinful” term is a woman thing. Men (and I’m generalizing here) think of their indulgences as just stuff that they enjoy…they probably don’t even call it “indulging,” it’s just what they do. This is probably a much better way to look at it, because why should you attach guilt to something that gives you pleasure as long as you exercise self-control and don’t let indulgences take over your life?
Madeline, do you really try the make up stuff you see in magazines? That’s SO cool! I always want to do that, especially the really crazy stuff I see, but never have the courage to do it. Now I just might.

Ooh, ooh, me next!
KFC. Totally sinful indulgence that I do maybe once a year (mumble mumble). Okay, maybe twice.
Glomming onto TV shows. I think of this in the category of “wasting time.” But usually when I’m doing this it’s because I’ve just come out of the writing cave and my brain needs time to rest and recuperate. So I guess this is more a part of my writing process than a guilty pleasure. ha! How is that for rationalization!
Madeline, I love makeup too. I rarely wear it, but when I dress up or go on vacation, I like having my fancy makeup. It’s an indulgence and I always feel a little guilty when I buy it.

Ah, indulgences. Mine usually come in the form of expensive food. I indulged this weekend when I went out with the DH and got far too many oysters. They’re one of my favorite things to indulge in. And then there is my fancy chocolate habit. I won’t eat the cheep stuff. I’d also agree with Jessie. As a grad student I have very little time to read my pleasure books, and this weekend I definitely indulged and read a few romance novels. Sigh. It was a little slice of heaven. I REALLY miss having time to read like I used to.
I think the reason we call them Sinful is cause we feel bad, but its oh so good! Men generally just say, oh, pleasure! And don’t really think too much about the whole i’m-not-supposed-to-do-this part. But then I’m sure there are plenty of men out there who feel guilty for some reason or another.

My sinful indulgences would be spa treatments. Full body massages, facials, and my favorites – pedicures. I like the pedicures because they don’t cost as much as the other treatments and they’re much quicker. In the summer I can go right around the corner for one at lunch time. Sadly, like everyone else we are watching our spending so I don’t know when I’ll have one next, which will make me enjoy it all the more! So for now I’ll just have to indulge in some chocolates. Godiva Pearls are great for this and I can get them at Bed Bath and Beyond with a coupon!!!

Sometimes I’ll buy a bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee just for me. I also love wine and there are two great wines I’ve found–one red, one white–that are fabulous but pricey. I try to keep consumption of them down so I can make the bottles last a while.
I also like shoes. Pretty, sparkly, summer-y shoes. Which is somewhat foolish considering I live with the snow for 9 months (not really but it FEELS like it). My closet is stacked with boxes and boxes. I HAVE been trying to cut down.
I gave up peanut M & M’s. My consumption had gotten out of hand and you know . . . you can’t just eat one of them. So it was cold turkey for me. Now I just have the plain ones in the house. For some reason, I can stop at a few of those.

What are your favorite sinful indulgences? Rich, rich food – the kind that makes you think your arteries are clogging as you eat it; really, really racy and steamy romance novels (oh well, let’s just call it erotica now shall we?)
Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones? Yes, they can. But adding the “sinfulness” factor seems to make them that much more attractive.
Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss? Romance novels (even the not-so-sinful ones).
Are your favorite indulgences free? If I check the books out from the library they are.
Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences? The 7 Deadly Sins, I imagine. It’s any ordinary activity taken to the extreme.
Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual? Not really.
Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence? Oh yes, I think men enjoy a “sinful” indulgence just as much as a woman does, but their choices of indulgences probably are different.
elsiehogarth on 27 Jan 2009 at 9:03 am #
My indulgences always involve some sort of food, especially my comfort foods: rice pudding, molasses cookies, ginger cookies, bread pudding and dark chocolate….does that mean that I have an oral fixation?
Ohhhh , yes on the make up and I agree that it has to do with the 12 years of Catholic schools and nuns/ priests who were anti even lip gloss. I just love all the moisturizers, eye cream, lotions, etc. I can not go by a Bath & Body Works without going into to it to see what’s new.
I had to give up drinking Pepsi….now that I’m 52 it’s not helping my metabolism so I’m drinking lots of tea as a substitute.
“Sinful” indulgences means that we don’t always have them all the time but when we do it just feels so good and it was worth the wait.
My only ritual is during my reading late at night. Since I read for 1 1/2, I can’t have anyone around talking to me, TV or music on. I really like to concentrate on what I am reading.
I think men act out on their indulgences right away…they want a new flat screen TV, sports tickets, computer, phone etc. We women think about it, think when we can indulge, then indulge and really enjoy our indulgence.

Buying makeup has to rank way up there. How many shades of brown eyeshadow does one woman need? Apparently quite a few. *g* But even if I buy my make up at K-Mart (and I do), and even if I buy just two new lipsticks and a mascara and a couple of eye shadows, it still totals up to $33! And I walk out with a teeny tiny bag with five items in it. That feels like an indulgence. Totally worth it, but still, an indulgence.
Freedom Writer on 27 Jan 2009 at 9:47 am #
Cold Stone Creamery Ice Creammmmmm.
One indulgence that I have had to give up since I stopped working is going to Madison to shop every weekend. Of course when I was working that was more of a de-stressing activity than an indulgences. It was sinful because it wasted all of my writing time so then I would feel guilty.
Men are more immune to the guilt that self indulgence creates in women. Men and women work differently and I think that men seem to feel that the good things that they do for themselves are well deserved and women see them as something good, but they don’t deserve it. Women many times feel that they are neglecting others when they indulge themselves, and men do not feel that.
Michelle B on 27 Jan 2009 at 9:50 am #
My indulgences are a glass of wine once in a while, white is my favorite. Chocolate Truffles! Pedicures in Florida were around $20 and my DD #2 and I indulged in them every couple of months. Here in Ohio it is closer to $40 and now I really feel like it is an indulgement so we only go about twice a year.
Cake is one of those indulgences I can’t turn down if offered to me. The sound I make after a bite is “Hmmmmmmmm” with eyes closed.
I think men have sinful indulgences too. They just wouldnt’ admit to them.
Madeline Hunter on 27 Jan 2009 at 9:50 am #
A lot of food indulgences here, lol. I am so pleased to see others have the makeup indulgence. I really think the nuns did a number on me on that one. I don’t succumb to magazine promises of looking years younger, but I have all this stuff like sparkly eyeshadow that I never wear out. Sometimes I play with it. I have stuff I have never worn more than once.
Oh, and spas!!! Although normally a massage feels so healthy, and I feel so much better, that my brain categorizes it as a medical treatment, I think, so I don’t feel very sinful about it. Maybe subconsciously I think that if not for this indulgence, I would be in traction or something. But on those very rare occasions when I have done the facial spa treatments, oh, yes, that felt very indulgent.
Madeline Hunter on 27 Jan 2009 at 9:58 am #
Freedom Writer, I think you are right about the man/woman thing with this. I also think that women are soooo practical, and are always thinking “with this money or this time I should be doing x, y, or z.”
I think that I enjoy my sinful indulgences because I am saying to that guilt trip side of me “Nyah, nyah, nyah!”
Becky on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:12 am #
Oh, indulgences. I am the worst person in the world when it comes to my indulgences. The really big one that I never can seem to fight off is my food cravings. I’m not even pregnant, yet I crave certain foods so strongly at random times that my body literally almost revolts when I don’t give in. Burgers and fries, tacos, cheesecake, brownies, cookies, ice cream, you name it. If it’s bad for you, I’ll crave it. I never have yet managed a craving for a salad… But I indulge myself all the time with food. Very sinful, I am sure. But my little sister, who is a world-class athlete, no joke, told me this: “I can have three cookies…as long as I have three carrots. It balances out.” So there.
Another is books. Oh, gosh, don’t even take me into a book store if I have money to hand. Bad idea. I will spent HOURS in a book store and then I’ll buy the books that I’ve half read. I have a HUGE library of books and I never seem to have enough. And I will lay in bed and read for HOURS. Day or night.
And the last one is Bath and Body Works. My family restrains me from entering, knowing how bad I am. I can’t help it. I like to smell good.
I certainly hope men have indulgences. I aim to BE one!!
Becky on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:13 am #
And Madeline, I’m studying to be a massage therapist. There’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with getting one! If anybody comes to the Cincinnati area, let me know and I’ll hook you up with a great deal and a pretty dang good massage, if I do say so myself. =)

Congrats on your new baby book, Madeline!
Indulgences…definitely tv. The occasional good chocolate. A couple times a year I get a pedi. I love pedis!
Becke/Treethyme on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:34 am #
I’ve got it on preorder so I should be getting it soon!
Ayse on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:39 am #
With chocolate it doesn’t have to be Godiva or some other expensive brand as long as its good I’m happy
My big indulgence would probably be that I get a full body massage and a Turkish bath once a year. Although if I could afford it I’d get the massage every day. I’m also very careful with anything I put on my face. Don’t wear makeup much, but when I do bother I try to use the good stuff.
My evil Dr. won’t let me eat anything fried or chocolate or that pretty much tastes good. GRRR so hating it!
Can’t even drink coffee. The worst part is I can’t drink about how pitiful it all is. I also can’t have coke… It’s one of the things I’ve tried to give up b4, but I always end up missing it. Especially Cherry coke.
I think my food indulgences (yes I’m a bit of a glutton) are sinful because everything that tastes good is bad for you.
My boyfriend’s sinful indulgence is a water pipe every now and then and snowboarding. He also has a total sweet tooth.

Hi Madeline, I can’t wait to read the Sins of Lord Easterbrook!! I had to give up my indulgence for a hot, sweet Mocha Latte
Dairy doesn’t agree with me anymore. But I’m still going to my favorite coffee shop, though now I drink green tea. Healthier, I agree, but SO boring…
amy1242 on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:50 am #
Freedom, I couldn’t agree with you more! Heck, I feel guilty for going to bed early when I’m really tired. It’s funny, everyone in the house thinks I’m sick or something. Then I feel guilty for making them feel bad for me. It’s GOT to be a woman thing.
LauraR on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:55 am #
My indulgences are more comfort related than food. I have a towel warmer in my bathroom. Gotta love warm, dry towels every time I shower. Books are a definite indulgence. I don’t expect to see the bottom of my TBR pile any time soon. And when I turned 50 and had an opportunity to buy a used BMW Z3 with very low mileage at a great price, I just *had* to indulge my inner speed racer. No speeding tickets during the 6 years I’ve had it but usually on I-5 folks are passing me even when I’m speeding. sheesh.
Food indulgences on the lower cost end are Dove Dark Chocolate. On the higher end is fresh alaskan salmon and fresh Dungeness crab. yummm
I think the ’sinful’ part comes from the belief that denying yourself will make you a better person. That doing something just for yourself, ie, taking the time to read for pleasure, is ‘wasteful’ and so is sinful and we should feel guilty about it. Can you tell I reject that notion?
Karen Hawkins on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:58 am #
What are your favorite sinful indulgences?
Food. Food. Food. Books of all kinds. And the internet — hanging on this blog, reading Pioneer Woman, and delving into politico and entertainment sites, everything from Perez Hilton to the Huffington Post.
Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones?
Yes!
Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss?
Sweet things and the internet. I’d jones like an addict.
Are your favorite indulgences free?
Are any?
Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences?
Because we (I) feel guilty because we (I) know I should be doing something more productive, but not as much fun.
Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual? I do have a reading ritual — a great book, a nice hot bath, lovely bath salts, with a cold glass of white wine. ***happy sigh*** It’s just so decadent and all about me, me, me!
Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence? Oh men indulge and yes, definitely ’sinfully.’ I think women tend to feel guiltier, but it’s there for men, too.
Judi Lacanlale on 27 Jan 2009 at 10:58 am #
Ahh! My simple indulgence are reading romance novels. I’m addicted to them! I read 3-4 books a week! This is definitely an indulgence since I’m a busy stay-at-home mom. I don’t know how I’ve been doing it but I have been reading voraciously for the past 6 months. I also indulge on Facebook, I’m addicted in the applications, writing on sites and profiles and becoming fans of things/people/causes, etc. Another indulgence is full-body massage which I try to do at least once a month being a member of a massage spa. But my biggest indulgence is Travel. This is a big one since it’s expensive and my other indulgence are either free or inexpensive. I love visiting other countries and learning about them. I love meeting fellow travelers and people from the country we’re visiting. I love spending time with my hubby and children and enjoying our travels together, learning and loving together. My indulgence may not sound sinful to others but to me if it feels too good, it must be sinful. Thanks literary goddesses for all you do for us fans and keep up the good work! We love you and all your works!

Btw, Madeline, I GOT YOUR BOOK! As soon as I meet my daily goal, I’m hitting the tub until I’m a prune. I CAN’T WAIT!
SheridanLA on 27 Jan 2009 at 11:12 am #
My sinful indulgences… rarely do it, but sometimes just lying in bed with the cat reading all day…or skip work and go see a matinee movie. I have not really had to give up anything in particular and there are other indulgences that are free, spontaneous and just as lovely.
I think we like to call then “sinful” because sin is “bad” and we feel a little rebellious.. a little naughty..by doing them. I think men and women both have them, though men might not really call them the same thing – or they do and just don’t share as much.
Women seem to really obsess over things that might be construed as being “bad”… (eavesdrop on conversations at restaurants, at least one table near you will talk about the calories they just ate, how they had too much, how they shouldn’t have, etc.)
Julie on 27 Jan 2009 at 11:26 am #
Oh yes… the little indulgences definitely are as pleasurable as the big ones. Give me a slice of good cheese, a glass of nice wine, or inexpensive earrings from some far off place. I love to spend the day reading. Even a quiet walk through some beautiful scenery feels sinfully indulgent to me.
Alas I have given up buying expensive, exotic Scandinavian Sweaters. Although maybe that’s not a bad thing . Since exotic Scandinavian Sweaters probably look kind of funny on a short, dark eyed, Non Scandinavian looking brunette like me.
My favorite Indulgence is free. It’s hugging my husband in public. I swear, public displays of affection makes the man so nervous he gets hives. But every now and then I need a little indulgence. So I lean into the poor man … then I wrap my arms around him … and hug him until he hugs me back. The poor thing always gives in. he can’t help it.
I think they are called “sinful” indulgences because something that feels, tastes, smells, sounds, or looks That Good must be very, Very Bad.
IMO, men don’t feel guilty about their sinful indulgences. That would be as silly to them … as showing displays of affection in public !
Rachel Gibson on 27 Jan 2009 at 11:27 am #
My favorite indulgence is Tiffany. Not the singer. The jeweler.
And if I could, (I know this is going to be very unpopular) I’d love to occasionally have one cig with a glass of wine. I gave up cigs over 15 years ago, but once in a while I’d love to just have one. But I can’t. Kind of like Skittles. I can never have just one.

What are your favorite sinful indulgences?
Also chocolate, of course, especially hot fudge sundaes.
*Spa treatments are right up there at the top of the list but I’ve stopped viewing them as sinful indulgences. They are medical necessities. Yep, that’s right. Stress is bad for our health and spa treatments are wonderful for de-stressing hence…medical necessity.
Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones?
*Definitely!
Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss?
*The garlic knots at the local Italian restaurant. I caved and ate three of them Saturday night…and paid for it all night long and half of Sunday.
Are your favorite indulgences free?
*ROFL!
Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences?
*I think that goes way back to our Puritanical roots where anything that gave you pleasure was considered sinful.
Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual?
*Not really.
Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence?
*I think women are more likely to view it as “sinful” than men. We do it to ourselves.

My biggest indulgence is reading when other work needs to be done. Like this morning, I spent the 2 1/2 hours of free time I get while my son goes to preschool re-reading “By Possession” in order to get into my Madeline Hunter reading mode. Actually, putting aside daily housework to do anything personal, like reading or scrapbooking, is an indulgence I allow myself on a regular basis. That, and a piece of chocolate every night after the kids are in bed

A new novel, a nice warm cup of Earl Grey and silence… That is my sinful indulgence

I indulge in hair product that I get shipped across the country to CA from a NYC salon that specializes in curly hair. I did agree with my dh last week when I got my haircut (I donated 13″ to Locks of Love), to try a product line I could buy locally. Since I went to an Aveda salon on the recommendation of a curly-haired friend, I’m trying Aveda products. While I like the way it works, I cannot stand the way it smells. I’m probably going to go back to Hair Rules products.
I like make up, too. One cannot have too much lipstick, lipgloss, or eye shadow.
Last year I gave up French fries. I did miss it for the first couple of months and was so tempted to eat them. But now, they have no appeal.
I’ll never give up caramel, but I only indulge myself at Christmas when I make it.
A long time ago I decided that I wasn’t going to be like my mom, which means that I have no problem indulging myself. I’m not going to be a martyr.
Noelle/Barbra E Noel on 27 Jan 2009 at 11:42 am #
Whenever I think of indulgences I think about a historical romance I read probably 15 years ago. The heroine was very poor but after a hard day indulged in buying good tea and real butter then sat by a small fire heartily enjoying her tea with butter toast. The writer made the whole scene seem so indulgent and relaxing I’ve never forgotten it.
Makeup is one for me too. I have a background advertising and I love love love all the fabulous packing of makeup at Sephora.
And books are an indulgenece I would never ever give up. They are my refuge. If I’m stressed I can just walk through a bookstore and instantly feel calm.
Having a day job and a writing career I really miss the just for fun continuing ed classes I loved to take like yoga or fencing or food and travel related classes.

*What are your favorite sinful indulgences? Taking a hot bubble bath with a good book, Soduko – I’m totally addicted to these puzzles. I even have an electronic one that I started carrying in my purse. Ice cream and Diet Pepsi Max.
*Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones? Oh yes.
*Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss? Due to now being 7 weeks pregnant I had to give up my Diet Pepsi Max and also hot baths. With caffiene being bad for the baby I gave it up. Okay I admit I had one on Sunday but that’s all. I also have to take warm baths now instead of hot so I don’t hurt the baby.
*Are your favorite indulgences free? My baths are and my Soduko since I have an electronic game that has tons of puzzles on it. Occasionally though I like to buy the variety Soduko puzzle books.
*Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences? I have no idea. I just enjoy them.
*Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual? Nope, not really. Just me and my recliner…unless it’s the bath.

Hi Madeline,
You’re new release sounds divine. I can’t wait to read it. As to your cover model, what a hunk of…hunk!
Re my “sinful indulgences,” I think of them more as guilty pleasures. I always start my day by reading my online horoscopes–as in more than one. I doubt that’s “sinful” but it does gobble up some time. Then again, I made that a characteristic of one of my fictional heroines, so ever since I’ve decided that all “guilyt pleasures” are really research in disguise.

Madeline, my cute UPS guy delivered your book this morning. YAY!
1. My favorite sinful indulgences are books and travel.
2. Any indulgence is fun.
3. I’ve had to give up beef, pork, cheese and other assorted food items for medical reasons. I would kill for a big, juicy hamburger or steak.
4. Are your favorite indulgences free? Only if you consider breathing in and out an indulgence.
5. Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences? Because they usually involve a great deal of pleasure.
6. Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual? No
7. Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence? Oh, yes, and they usually keep them a secret.

Speaking of Sephora—-oh, my. They opened one near me. I have to resist walking in there. I found something interesting, though. They have some products by companies like Dior there that are not sold at the Dior counter of the department store here. Is the dept store just not as well stocked?
Travel—definitely a wonderful indulgence. I am totally hooked and avoid noticing how much I have “invested” in it. Only I have all kinds of ways to rationalize it so it doesn’t feel sinful. Family time, research time, etc. There is that Puritanical streak coming out, lol. Oh, this is okay because I can move it into a category that sounds *productive* or *necessary*.
Just the thought of a massage has me moaning in virtual pleasure. I wonder if you have to be the achey type to enjoy them so much. Although I bought an Aeron chair in Dec and cannot believe what it has done for me.

Thank you for the good words about that cover. I was happy with it. I had not been happy with my covers for a while and for this book my publisher did try harder.
That face up there is not the cover model. He is the creation of the artist who worked on my video (which will be up today or tomorrow). I am really picky about the faces, and could not find one I liked, so she used Photoshop to make one I did like. It was a bit like working with a police artist must be, only the face was in my imagination not on a criminal I had seen. “No, the eyes have to be more intense so find other ones. How about this nose, and that mouth, and this chin, and . . . ..”

Special Congrats Madeline! What is the first book one should read in the “Easterbrook Series” I like to start at the beginning.
Now for the questions:
I have a few sinful indulgences which is making feel like a prima donna right now,
#1 Coke baby. Every morning I wake up to an icy can of Coca Cola. I have another in the afternoon when I am writing. I savor it as if it were liquid gold. If not for calories, I’d drink 10 per day!
#2 Romance Novels – Every night before I go to bed I read for anywhere between 20 min to 1 1/2 hours. I should be writing but I luxuriate in laying in a cozy bed with a goddess book.
#3 Lunch with my girlfriends. At least twice a month.
#4 Going to a movie. Sadly I only go about three or four times a year because I don’t like many that come out, but when I have a favorite, I go over and over.
#5 Mocha Light Frappacino from Starbucks with whipped cream. Heavenly!
#6 Buying jeans that make me look slimmer than I am. (Doesn’t happen too often)
#7 Laying around in the afternoon.

The first book in the series is Rules of Seduction, then Lessons of Desire, then Secrets of Surrender, then this one. They really can be read out of order, but I know a lot of readers don’t like to do that.
I have found black jeans with boot cut legs do wonders in the “looking slimmer” area

I ran to the bookstore (actually Target) this morning and picked up a copy of The Sins of Lord Easterbrook, among other titles. I read an advanced one, but wanted to support what I think will be a great first day of sales! I also posted the cover on my blog at http://www.sarahtormey.com. Congrats!!!!
My favorite indulgences? Books and cupcakes (vegan cupcakes that is!)
Happy Reading Everyone!

My favorite indulges are: taking a verrrrrry long hot bath, eating as much chocolate as I can, reading romance novels whenever my work is all done a bit early and just lying on the sofa, with a glass of wine, some music and a good book and last but not least bying books.
I feel so euphoric when I finnd a bunch of books I don’t have yet for a cheap price. Then putting them on my list, putting them on my shelf and rearranging my other books… It’s just so great!

Thank you, Sarah, for the post on your own blog! That was so nice of you.

Oh, I can’t wait to read your new book, Madeline! It looks delicious. My dh is gonna pick up my copy and B&N today.
As for sinful indulgences, chocolate is my downfall. I can resist most others, but I can’t resist chocolate.

My favorite sinful indulgences:
Chocolate truffles. Sooo good!
Bubble baths. I can’t wait to move in to our new house, it has a HUGE bathtub!

I have to agree that one of my biggest indulgences is reading when I know I should be doing anything else…LOL I see that I am not alone in that!!! Food is a big indulgence, and I don’t just mean sweets. My biggest indulgence has got to be having coffee with my sissy on the week-ends. You see, I live in Nebraska and she lives in Minn., and so with calls be free on the week-ends, we get up early with the little ones and have coffee. Sometimes we talk to long or don’t pay attention or don’t get breakfast started or laugh to loud if everyone else is still sleeping, but we never miss our coffee on the week-ends!!!!! So that has got to be my biggest indulgence. Well, that and spending WAY to much on BOOKS!!!!!!!!

My indulgences include junk food(chips, soda, cheesecake, fried foods,) watching stupid comedies(Old School, Porky’s, Wedding Crashers.) Some of my indulgences cost me extra pounds that I do not need. I enjoy small and big indulgences the same.

I did notice how many had reading as one of their indulgences. I was going to get into that in my post but the story was too long. So I’ll add it here.
I began reading romances at a time when DH and I were in a very tight financial situation. No money at all for indulgences. So buying a new book, even a paperback, was a big splurge for me.I would treat myself with one every now and then anyway. I developed a ritual for it. I mean, I really dragged it out, lol.
I would browse forever, savoring my audacity. I held the books, read the back copy of each, did a little dipping in. I would set aside stack and hone it down. The final book was still an impulse buy. I wasn’t going by author’s name or anything. I found some favorite reads that way, writers I still glom.
Then I had a whole ritual for reading it too. I had young children so it was late night reading for me. Not because I couldn’t grab ten minutes here or there but because I wanted to have a good long stretch to get lost in the book.
I still duplicate this at times. I’ll deliberately buy on impulse, just like then, making a ritual out of it. I still feel some of that sinful indulgence when I buy books now.

My favorite indulgence is Hot Cocoa!! Every time I go to the bookstore I get one. It’s really yummy; especially in the winter.
I think the little ones are better than the big ones because they tend to be more personal.
We probably call them sinful becasue they are either some high calorie yummy-ness or they take out time in which we should be doing something on our already-to-long to do list.
In my opinion, little indulgences are a MUST! Without them the stress of our everyday lives would probably drive us crazy!!

“sleeping as late as I want”
Wow, how could I have forgotten this one?! I call it “sleeping until I fall awake.” It is best on a slightly cool spring morning with the windows open.
Meg on 27 Jan 2009 at 6:08 pm #
OH!! I forgot about the Ghirahdeli store!!!!!!!!!! Who cares if it is spelled right; walking into that place is like walking into heaven. While on vacation I visit one at least three times. (that’s in one week) Now we sale the bags of a few kinds of their chocolates in the store that I work in, but it’s not the same as going to the store. Smelling that smell…staring at ALL those goodies and drooling… *sigh*

My most sinful indulgence years ago was reading romance novels- everyone expected you to read great works of literature, and couldn’t admit that you loved a great love story.
Now, my indulgence is getting nice dark chocolate and hiding it from the kids. It’s the one thing I do not feel guilty sharing. Little indulgences are a must. It’s a little treat that keeps you sane.

Okay, this is gonna sound weird… but SOFT WATER. I grew up in a town that had really really hard water. For example, water heaters didn’t last more than 3 years because of the mineral buildup! It always made your skin feel gookie. Yes, that’s the technical term. Gookie.
You’d be amazed at how desperate I get when my soft water is missing.
Told ya it was weird. LOL

Novels and chocolate covered pretzels are my indulgences. Ohh My local starbucks started serving a molten chocolate center mini chocolate bundt cake. So decadent. I’ve been stopping there quite often. I am loving Lord E. I cant wait to see what happens and see more of his past

My favorite indulgences are reading, reading, and more reading. Music, especially Ethnic ( Native Amer., Celtic, Pacific Islander); Show Tunes; and Holiday year round.
Big or small I enjoy them all.
I had to give up going out since I fell and hurt my back. Yesterday doesn’t count because I just went to the doctor. I miss just getting in the car and going.
I don’t feel guilty it would ruin all my pleasure in it.
If I don’t read for at least 15-30 minutes before bed and when I first wake up my day is off half a tick ALL day long! So maybe that isn’t an indulgence as much as a necessity.
The male of the species is one long indulgence! And they never feel guilty because they were endowed with the entitlement gene.

Thanks for all of your inspiring indulgences. You guys reminded me of some I have neglected for a while.
The winners of the contest are Becky (post at 10:12), Julie (post at 11:26) and Jane (post at 5:14). It turns out there is no way to contact you through this blog, so if you would email me at acherm2003 AT comcast.net, with your pick of book and your snail mail address, I’ll arrange to get them out.

What are your favorite sinful indulgences?
Is buying a new romance novel….
Do little indulgences give you as much delicious fun as big ones?
More if I find it a week early.
Is there an indulgence that you have had to give up, and really miss?
yes… after today i need to cut back or stop… all together….. I will miss that freedom, enjoy… that release of everyday stress.
Are your favorite indulgences free?
yes… Avon’s Love Gives Back Promotion has been posting free reads
Why do you think we call them “sinful” indulgences?
its that sinful guilt…. we get when its one in the morning…. know you have to get up early for work…. but you have to know how it ends.
Does enjoying your sinful indulgence involve some kind of ritual?
No.
Do men have sinful indulgences, or is “sinful” a guilt trip women stick on their own moments of self-indulgence?
I ask my bf….he said,”Yes, its sports like the Superbowl. Remember the woman who had her wedding during the Superbowl and half of her guests declined to her wedding.”

Sinful Indulgence- buying books and chocolate…. because I have to sneak them in the house. Can you ever have too much of a good thing?? My husband thinks so!
I think so. Big indulgences to me would be a trip or a new car. Things that happen rarely for me. So I savor the small stuff I can enjoy on a daily basis.
I really haven’t given up anything.
No, but I do try to purchase the chocolates when they are on sale.
Sinful- In my case means sneaking it in without my husband discovering it. But, still enjoying it!
Ritual- Not in my case
Men sinful- yes they sneak their magazines, buy stuff for their cars or trucks, watch their sporting events, sneak in their golf games, card games etc

Now I know that many of you have probably already said this, but MY most sinful indulgence has been in fantasizing about all those “sinful” parts of the romance books I read. I put myself in the girls place and as I read on it really gives me a little “shiver” to think that I could be doing what they are doing. I wish I was really doing all of that is real life. It makes me, a homebound wife, happy at any rate. Sick or sinful? I can’t and won’t stop. I mean, what harm am I doing to anyone? What’s a little (ok a lot of) fantasizing going to do except make me feel ooh so good the rest of the day and night?

Like so many of you, my passion, addiction, and indulgence is reading … now almost exclusively women authors’ romance novels -historical and contemporary. Those male writers just don’t always follow the rules with intriguing plots, emotional relationships, and satisfactory heartwarming conclusions. For 22 years I taught high school English and I had to forego all but very occasional reading splurges because of interminable 10th grade compositions, term papers, and occasional sparks of thrilling incipient brilliance. So after I left teaching to begin my own business, I indulge myself more than I should and the business gets put on hold – which is the sinful part! The only ritual is keeping a book with me where ever I go – just in case I have a chance to read. I never worry about having to wait somewhere. I also carry my current read into the bathroom where I spend more time that I really need sneaking in those few extra pages!
My husband has his own indulgence which is fishing! When he gets time off and the weather is cooperative, he is out on the boat. If he can’t go, then we watch fishing on the television. Which is great because he can never complain about my reading!

Like so many others I love dark chocolate and rich red wine. I also appreciate having time to indulge in my favorite hobby-reading. Now that my kids are grown and out on their own-I can indulge even more.

I have to admit its no Biggy. Everybody who knows me, knows of it, even my kids have clued into this indulgence. Its
reading, but not just any book, but a hot, really hot romance book. And what goes hand in hand with hot romance books
well chocolate of coarse. The smooth creamy milk chocolate kind, that simply melts in your mouth as your sucking on it,
before you turn your page with a sigh. I’m relaxed in my bed with my reading lamp on, rolled up in my blankets and
wearing my favourite pj’s, and its only six o’clock. Everyones home and the city is shut down as a blizzard blasts through my small little town named Snowball Corner. Not one of my four kids is going to interrupt me to take them anywhere. My
husband is lying next to me with the remote control in his hand, and a smile on his face, knowing I’m not going to ask him once to stop changing the channels and leave it in one spot, nor will I be up set he’s decided to watch both the antique road show and the hockey game. But the best part of it all is that he won’t bother me until my book is done, my lamp has been turned off, and i’ve now turned towards him. it is then we both know the routine and indulge in each other.
