Music videos . . .
Nov 20th 2008
Karen HawkinsOn Writing!
When I was a kid, I fell in love with Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. I loved the story with the music; the great, fun dance; but especially the lyrics and great beat.
I’m not here to admit that I used to do the Thriller dance in front of the television set . . . or that I can even do it today. But ah . . . yeah. I could. I can.
And I do.
Last week, my daughter’s band started shooting their own music video and it has been fascinating hearing all of the little tidbits of the filming process. Here, take a look. The song is called JUST SOME GYPSY — the words ‘rough cut’ just refers to the fact that this isn’t the final version of the video.
Oh, and if you’ll take your cursor off the black square when you’re done clicking the ‘on’ button, all of the controls buttons will disappear and you’ll get a better view.
Just Some Gypsy ROUGH CUT from justin on Vimeo.
So . . . can you dance the Thriller dance, too? Were there any music videos you used to (and still) love? Do you like my daughter’s video? And do you have any suggestions for the band, Plainclothes Tracy, for the final cut?

Uh no, can’t do the Thriller dance myself and there are several videos that I used to and still like but they are country. Reba McIntyre is one of my favorites.
Oh, that video was wonderful, I can’t see anything that needs improvement.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:16 am #
MizMacG, I bet you could dance the Thriller dance. I’m not a dancin’ sorto ‘ woman (well, ok, the macarena, but who doesn’t know that one?) but I can remember the steps!
As for country, they have GREAT videos because so many of their songs are stories. I love the video for “I Love This Bar.” It’s reminds me of so many of the honky tonks that I used to see in Tennessee. Oh, and the video for Garth Brooks, The Dance is awesome, too. I can still remember it and I haven’t seen it in years and years.
Uh oh. Now I have a tune worm for The Dance! I’ll be humming that all day.

Karen, I’m on my way out the door so I’ll post to this later but I just wanted to make sure you saw the PEOPLE news on this year’s Sexiest Man! They got it right!!!
cail on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:39 am #
i was never much of a music video person. i didn’t watch much tv growing up, but i love the artistic way this video is done. not to mention i love this style of music. i’d totally grab an album if i saw them at a show. way to go, karen’s daughter!
and they’re all cute too!
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:40 am #
YES! People Magazine rocks! The sexiest man on earth is . . . . (drum roll, please!) HUGH JACKMAN!
Finally. All of those years with Brad Whazziz Face were wasted. Wasted, I tell you!
Btw, I thought of another music video I used to love — the one with the guy who was a black and white cartoon and he pulls the girl into his cartoon world . . . do you guys remember that one? I used to LOVE it. Can’t remember the song, but I can hum it!
Susan M on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:03 am #
Never could do the Thriller dance but I loved the video.
“Btw, I thought of another music video I used to love — the one with the guy who was a black and white cartoon and he pulls the girl into his cartoon world . . . do you guys remember that one? I used to LOVE it. Can’t remember the song, but I can hum it!”
It’s “Take Me On” by A-Ha (I have the song on my Ipod).

Hi Karen H - Your daughter’s music is very unique. I really like the sound and I also enjoyed watching the video. She sure looks a lot like her mama!
I love music videos. I always liked the videos of the songs I loved, and right now I really do love Taylor Swift’s video “Love Story”. I remeber when Thriller came out, I was in Cosmotology school at the time. The boys from Auto Shop invited all of us girls down there for breakfast and to watch the premire of that video. I remember it like it was yesterday.
No, I don’t dance. Not to videos, not ever. I have no dancing genes in my body. But I dream of ballroom dancing lessons with my husband but I don’t think its gonna happen.
Kari on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:44 am #
Awesome video! I likey!
I like the videos that are more natural. Meaning they are the singers/band members as themselves doing normal things vs. computer generated stuff with a buch of special effects. I think you get more of a pesonal feel of the song and the songs message. IMO
This band reminds me of Brandy Carlisle, in a great way.
I love dancing to songs!! I never mastered, or tired for that matter, Thriller. I think I was too young when it came out. I can currently do the Macarena, Electric Slide and the dance for Cotton Eye Joe. Watch out cause there’s not hold ming me back!!
One of my favorite music videos I’ve always loved was Rush Rush by Paula Abdul. I loved how they used Rebel Without A Cause as the inspiration for it. Not to mention Keanu Reeves is HOT in it!! Just a really pretty video.
Ditto the opinion on The Dance. Will always love that video, song and message it sends. Oohhhhhh and The Change. Same feelings. Such a powerful song. Gosh I love Garth!! I need to pull out my GB cd’s!!
Margaret on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:45 am #
OMG, Karen! The video is beautiful. I love how they’ve done the back & forth stuff near the end. It fits perfectly with the music. Your daughter has a fabulous voice. Holy smokes! I don’t know what I expected but she just blew me away. I hope their demo gets seen by somebody who can do something to forward their music career.
BTW, you’ve apparently learned the secret of cloning. DD looks just like you.
Sure, I can do the Thriller dance. Just like I can do Swan Lake & break dance. The secret is to keep it all in my head. I can do anything there. Oh. You meant IRL. Um. Well. I’m afraid the answer would have to be no.
I loved all those young Michael Jackson videos. Too bad MTV went off the tracks by not doing videos anymore.
Kathy/Cookiedough on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:06 am #
I think I already shared the Thriller dance tutorial I did for my sister’s friends one 1984’s New Years eve.
I could not do it now for the life of me!
I do watch all the youtube thriller dances though. have you seen the ones from the Thai prison? impressive, and sadly mandatory exercise for the inmates.
Love the song. The video is good. I like the premise. I would just tweak the order of some of the shots.
I would probably make it a journey through the countryside to get to the place where they play the song. having the instrument cases in the shots would help keep that going.
And not show them playing at all until after the 3min mark. then do the backwards cuts, interspersed with eperformance cuts, bringing them back to the beginning of the trip.
I do videos a lot. watching and editing my own.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:07 am #
Cail, I like it, too! My daughter says it’s a mix of indie, folk, and blues. If you want, you can download some of their music for free from their myspace page. I linked their band name to it.
Susan, that’s IT! I was FASCINATED by that video when I was young. It was just sooooo romantic!
Lisa H, I should have clarified. I don’t dance WELL, I just DANCE. With enthusiasm, and never really with the music. When I do the Thriller dance, I’m always a half a step behind every one else, but I don’t care! It’s just cool.
I have to say, I fell for the Taylor Swift video, too, after Sabrina posted it. SO cool and such a fairy tale setup. What’s not to love?
Kari, I’m going to have to youtube that video and catch it. I didn’t know Kneau Reeves was even in one — he’s a cutie! I’ve always loved Paula Abdul’s dancing, though. She’s just fun to watch. Remember the old video she did with the cartoon cat? That was a fun one!
Kathy/Cookiedough on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:08 am #
And Karen, I’ve said it before, Kym is stunning and looks a lot like her mama!
you must be tickled with pride!
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:11 am #
Margaret, a friend of Kim’s did the video. He lives in Manhattan and does lighting for a number of big names. Kim (or, as her friends call her ‘Kym’ — don’t know why she put a ‘y’ in her name in high school, but she did and it stuck except for me) wrote the song, the lyrics, the melodies and plays lead guitar. Meanwhile, I can’t even clap. But hey, I’m a GREAT audience member and I’ve held up my lighter to many of her tunes.
Ha!
And what’s up with MTV nowadays? Remember when they had NO COMMERCIALS? And played videos all day? With those cute VJs? And now what? Yak, yak, yak. It’s hard to find a video on there.
Kathy, I’ll have to find the one from the Thai prison. It might be mandatory, but perhaps they had fun. I’ll pass your suggestions on to my daughter and her ‘committee of four’! I’m sure they’ll be glad for some ideas. They’re playing with it and it’s different every time I look at it.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:14 am #
And yes, I am proud of her! She has a great apartment and some excellent friends that she’s known since 5th grade, is making great grades (majoring in advertising), keeping her band going — just cut a cd and now the video, and is a wonderful sister to her brother. She’s very family oriented and she’s always checking in with my parents and calling to tell me how they are.
She’s a good one and, now that the angsty teen years are over (HUZZAH!), she’s a pure joy.
Like my mother always said, once they turn 21 and their brains get reconnected, you’re home free.
elsiehogarth on 20 Nov 2008 at 9:55 am #
Karen, your daughter is adorable and so talented. Her band members are so cute. I really like the one that looks like a young Drew Carey.
The vidoes I love the videos and that make me want to dance are:
The Napoleon Dynamite final dance.
Michael Jackson-Remember the Times and Beat It
Jamiroquoi-Virtual Reality I would love to be in that moving room.
Congratulations on Hugh being People’s Sexist Man of the Year.
RachelG on 20 Nov 2008 at 10:03 am #
Wow Karen, your daughter looks just like you. Beautiful girl, wonderful voice and I wish her mucho success.
Gee, wasn’t she just in Jr, high?
Rachel
Karen Rose on 20 Nov 2008 at 10:22 am #
Susan, that cartoon video was Aha’s Take On Me. I still like that song.
I love videos too. I used to have the TV set to CMT while I wrote all night, for the music and sometimes the inspiration. I love country videos because they tend to tell a real story.
My favorite? Hard to pick. Brad Paisley’s The Dad He Didn’t Have To Be and Garth Brooks’s Standing Outside the Fire come to mind. Also like Just Another Day in Paradise, but that singer’s name is escaping me.
SheridanLA on 20 Nov 2008 at 10:29 am #
I dig the music! I am listening to the other tracks on their MySpace page.
I dance with everything..whether or not I am doing the same steps as in the video are irrelevant - what do those choreographers know anyway?
I miss the old MTV.. what a new world that opened when it launched. Wow.
(and has there always been a “percent used” meter below.. or have I just been oblivious? Which is entirely possible, of course.)
Yasmin on 20 Nov 2008 at 10:55 am #
I love the Macarena and Thriller dance steps.Macarena i can do but Thriller i only try.I like quirky music videos like Missy Elliots or with love stories in them like Enrique Igleasias’s. i like Belinda’s Bella Traicion which is in spanish but she plays two sides of herself in that one. I also like Shake it by Metro St, I write sins not tragedies by Panic at the disco, Apologize by timbaland featuring one republic and any madonna and justin Timberlake song since there is always dancing in them
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:05 am #
Elsie, that’s Trey, their bass player, and Kim thinks the world of him — says he’s funny and smart and really enjoys the music. He IS a cutie, isn’t he? And he has that sly smile - makes you grin, too.
Rachel, I’m sure Kim was just in JR. High. Last week, in fact!
Oh, Karen Rose, The Dad He Didn’t Have To Be is SUCH a great song. Makes me weep ever time I hear it which is why I don’t listen to country music when I drive. I’ll have to look up the video — but first I’ll get a box of Kleenex
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:15 am #
Sheridan, the percent meter is new — we’re working on a few things here, some of which are working and some of which aren’t.
For example, if you start a post, notice that the SUBMIT COMMENT buttons stays inactive UNTIL your post hits a certain length and then, all of the sudden, you can post. So this means no short posts until we debug the system and get that out of there.
It’s a work in progress, your lovely Mt! We’re always trying to improve, improve, improve!
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:17 am #
Yasmin, I saw Enrique on a show just yesterday! What a hottie! MMMM! He’s definitely FROS-worthy. We just might have him come and visit us one Saturday.
You’ve got a great list of dance tunes there, too! I secretly love pop and listen to it when my guy’s not around, because his tastes tend to lend themselves more to blues and jazz, which I love, too, but sometimes a girl’s gotta get her groove on!
Karen Rose on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:19 am #
Phil Vassar! He did the “just another day in Paradise” song. I remembered on my own, without Googling him! I am so proud.
Yes, KarenH, the country music industry should put a warning label on their songs, cautioning about driving when weepy.
There is a newish Tim McGraw song about a letter from a deceased soldier in Iraq, If you read this I’m already home. Never have heard the end of that song - I have to turn off the radio every time as I’m weeping. I’ll have to see if there is a video.
SheridanLA on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:19 am #
I was wondering why I could not post a link earlier… guess this will encourage me to babble away till I am verbose enough to trigger the length calculator script and the imps at Mt Olympus decide that I can then - after much ado - post the little tiny thing that I meant to say in the first place…. there we are…
here is a link to the spoof on the A-Ha video.. Close Up Eyes.

Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 11:28 am #
Karen Rose, the song ‘letters from home’ make me cry every time I hear it, too. COPIOUSLY — like ‘get a grip, woman’ sort of tears.
It’s not pretty.
But I do love that song and feel so strongly about our men and women in the field.
Sheridan, we turned off the counter because it went toxic on us, and now we’re trying out a new one. We’ll see what works, but the whole ‘write until the light comes on’ is for the birds. That won’t stand AT ALL!
Thanks for the link, too! I’m off to peek now.
Kim on 20 Nov 2008 at 12:12 pm #
OMG! Karen, Kim looks EXACTLY like you. I bet that’s exactly what you looked like in college. Wow.
The video is great. I love the ending where they do the back and forth bits. And the dog is super cute
I can’t do the Thriller dance but I love that scene in 13 going on 30 when Jennifer Garner does it at that big party.
That Taylor Swift video is super cute too. Its my favorite song right now. Has anyone seen the Carrie Underwood for her new one? Its a tear jerker.
Janae on 20 Nov 2008 at 1:02 pm #
I think I could probably do the Thriller dance. I liked the videos that tell a story - Aha’s Take on Me, Duran Duran’s Hungry Like a Wolf, Smooth Criminal, which will now be in my head all day long, etc. Man, it’s been forever since I’ve seen a video.
Karen, Kym is beautiful and talented. I love the video and the song! I’m going to check out their myspace page because I love their sound.
Yay for Hugh!! My world stopped when I caught the Australia trailer last night.

One video that always makes me tear up is Garth Brooks in concert singing “It Was Your Song” to his mom. OMG! I don’t even have to see the video. His voice starts cracking toward the end as he’s overcome with emotion and trying not to break down. Whew! Gets me every time.
Tim McGraw is another one who kills me. “Live Like You Were Dying” was written about his dad, famous Phillies pitcher Tug. I need the full box of tissues for that one.
I may have to haul those cd out for a listen.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 1:57 pm #
Kim, my guy loooves Jennifer Garner! I bet he’s seen that movie 80 times … maybe more!
Janae, the Australia movie looks good, doesn’t it? That Hugh is something else!
Sheridan, I’m so excited about the walk cam! Thanks for posting it!
Btw, you crack me up! Just keep typing! Keeping typing! Keyboard in Italy are green. Pickles are extra. Am I near 80?
Are you ready to go? All packed? Had a pedicure? Read to roll?

Yasmin, I haven’t heard of Mun2 but will see if I can find it. We just got a new cable system and I don’t know what’s what. Don’t you hate it when they move your favorite channels? Sheesh! I just had the old one figured out!
I’ll have to check out that Disney deal. My kids were born on the same day, so they could go together. Huzzah! Thanks for the heads-up!
Margaret, I didn’t know Tim McGraw’s father was a ball player, although I know the song and have always loved it. Off to youtube it!

I love technology. LOL
Karen, Tug McGraw was a famous Philadelphia Phillies pitcher who pitched the winning game in 1980. He was a popular guy in Philadelphia. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about him & Tim: “Tug had a brief relationship in 1966 with Betty d’Agostino which resulted 1 son, country music superstar Tim McGraw. Tug did not acknowledge Tim as his son until Tim was 18 years old, but the two later developed a close relationship.”
Tug died of a brain tumor a few years ago. Tim planted his ashes on the pitchers mound during Game 3 of the recent World Series. I cried.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 6:50 pm #
Alrighty See if this is working now.
Let’s see . . . Karen is going to post a post of a post to check the post for my lovely posters! And by posters, I’m not talking about posters like those of those Jonas brothers or Miley, but posters like you ‘n me as we sit around the old olympic pond here on the Mt. and chat it up.
Yup! I think I can say that it’s fixed!
Margaret on 20 Nov 2008 at 6:51 pm #

Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 6:52 pm #
Oh, Margaret, thanks for making me weep at my favorite coffee shop.
What a delightful story. You know, you sort of get the impression that Tim M is a deep man and really appreciates the simple things. I never know if that’s just flash and bang for the audience, but for him, it seems very genuine.
Margaret on 20 Nov 2008 at 6:53 pm #
BTW, Goddess Hawkins. When will you get the first sales info on TOTT. I’ve been talking it up and and left reviews all over the Internet. Done my part. Oh yes. I read the book, too.
Margaret on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:00 pm #
Now you can really cry when you hear the song. LOL
Off the music video topic.
I went to the Sonic after dropping off my granddaughter. Came home and there were big fire trucks, ambulances & a police cruiser in my tiny cul-de-sac. I freaked. The fire policeman wasn’t going to let me turn in. I told him I lived down at the circle. He said I wouldn’t be able to get back there. He let me turn and park in front of the first house. I kept creeping toward my house. By then, I knew it wasn’t my place, but the newer one next door. She just had a knee replaced 3 weeks ago and was home alone. Fire was out by the time I got home. I saw that I could drive across a couple of front yards and parking aprons. Next thing, I was in my own driveway. I don’t know what caused it. Someone said it was in the kitchen trash can. Yikes. 2nd house in 3 weeks. One stick-built house burned to the ground a couple of weeks back.
Hope Zeus lets this thru.

I’ve been wanting to comment all day, but for some reason I couldn’t do it when I was at work! Maybe it was an Internet Explorer issue? I don’t know. (Just browsing back up through the comments, I see I wasn’t the only one having problems!)
All I wanted to say was … WOW, Karen! Your daughter and her bandmates are very talented! Even in its rough form their video was beautiful to watch.
You’ve got every right to be very proud!
P.S. The last time I regularly watched MTV was in the 80s - back when it was music videos and only music videos. They lost me when they started all of those extraneous programs that they seem so fixated on now.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:34 pm #
Sheesh! Do you have fire extinguishers nearby? I ALWAYS have three or four at my house. When I was younger, our house caught on fire, though it didn’t burn more than the wall in the front hall, it still scared me to death.
Oh, and as for sales info, I’ll get that next week. And THANK YOU for your kind words, your golden reviews, and much-appreciated assistance! You’re a sweetie to be so supportive — I’ll let you know the sales info the second I get it! I’ve got fingers and toes crossed!
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 7:39 pm #
Judy, it wasn’t your Internet Explorer, but one of our little add on programs that caused the glitch. We just got it worked out, though.
I stopped watching MTV at about the same time you did. I just don’t enjoy The Real Life or whatever they call it. Seemed like the worst parts of high school — fights and gossiping and silliness like that. :-/

I’m back in cyberspace.
wheeeee no, what is the term? W00T! lol
I feel bad now that I went for the changes I would make instead of the fact that i loved the imagery, the birds flying at the precise moment of the guitar and drum flurry.
sigh.
Meg on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:10 pm #
OK. lets try this again. I like the video. And I think she looks just like you too! I have never been great at dancing by myself. However, put me with a partner and I can do pretty good. When my sister and I were young we choreographed an entire dance to In the Mood! Yes, the big band music. That was fun!! And my oldest nephew and I would dance to the music from Titanic just like they did in the movie. That was fun too! I guess you can see that I would rather have a partner to dance. Helps me beat my shyness.
Mary C on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:19 pm #
Great video - cute dog.
I love the video of k.d.lang singing Crying
Kathy Mattea’s Where Have You Been
Bette Midler’s The Rose
Off topic - Talk of the Town was great - funny, sexy, hot and a cast of unforgettable characters. I especially enjoyed the confrontation between Roxie and Robin in front of the Safe-Co.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:53 pm #
Kathy, I can’t read a book without dissecting it in my mind — it’s one of the downsides of being a writer. You had some great ideas and I passed them on to the gang. They’ll discuss and take it from there, but it’s great to throw ideas out there. Thanks for taking the time!!!
Meg, I would LOVE to see something you’d choreographed! I just don’t have move-imagination to make up those things, but I am a deep, ardent appreciator of those who can.
Btw, speaking of having to have a partner, when my daughter was younger, she and her brother would take our video camera and their GI Joes and make them dance. They’d pose ‘em, shoot a second, turn the camera off, and pose them again. It was HYSTERICAL! They were like the Army Version of the Backstreet Boys.
Karen Hawkins on 20 Nov 2008 at 8:57 pm #
Mary C, k.d.Lang has a heck of a voice — just gorgeous. I need to look for that video! The Rose is one of those gets you when you don’t expect it to sort of songs.
And thanks for the comments about TOTT! I’ve got fingers crossed that it’ll do well. Please, please, please!
Btw, I had the BEST time with the bounce - off at the Safeco! I’m eeeevil, but oh, it was fun to write!
