Which brings us back to . . . DOH!
Ok, so maybe those aren’t QUITE the words, but you get the gist. I’m not good with words, but tunes? Once I get one in my head, it burrows in and sets up house.
My daughter calls these songs ‘tune worms.’ It’s an infestation as it were. And I wish they’d make a pill for it already.
The worst thing about a tune worm is that it doesn’t even have to be — and usually isn’t — a song that you like. Sometimes it’s an ad jingle or a snippet of song that is, simply put, annoying and regrettably simple. I never get a tune worm that might impress people like Mozart’s seventh symphony. Nope! I’m the woman in the back singing The Dr. Pepper Jingle slightly off key and completely incorrectly over and over and over and over and over and … you know how it goes and it ain’t pretty.
My top ten most annoying tune worms:
1. She’s a briiiick house! She’s mighty, mighty, just lettin’ it all hang out!
2. Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper, too?
3. The Double Dutch Bus.
4. I’m Too Sexy For My (fill in blank)
5. Gobble ‘em down and the plate comes back – for Hungry Jack!
6. C is for Cookie
7. Yankee Doodle Dandy
8. And then I saw her face! And now I’m a Believer!
9. Roll Out the Barrel! Roll out the barrel of fun!
10. Should auld acquaintance be forgot aaaaand never lost to mind!
Have you ever had a tune worm? What was the song? How did you get rid of it or is it still humming in your mind right now? And two hours from now, will you be humming “I’M A PEPPER! SHE’S A PEPPER! HE’S A PEPPER! WE’RE A PEPPER! WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO BE A PEPPER, TOO!

I too suffer from the effects of the “tune worm”, some of the ones I ALWAYS get in my head are…
*The Adams Family Song (so along with the singing and humming, people also get to hear my snapping fingers every three seconds)
*Those little chants people sing at baseball and softball games (“we want a triple, just a little triple, t-r…t-r-i…t-r-i-p-l-e…TRIPLE!” lol)
*”Your Guardian Angel” by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (love that song!!)
*”Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel)” by Billy Joel (yet another beloved song)
*And just about every Joss Stone song known to man
Aside from that it’s usually just a certain song or jingle that captures my attention at one point in the day…
Lol it can often times be quite annoying but I tend to enjoy most of the tunes that worm their way into my brain. =)

Karen, there should be a special place in the seventh level of hades for people who deliberately make a tune worm enter an unsuspecting person’s mind. ARG!! I was fine until I read your blog and now I have several worms doing laps in my poor pointy head.
Mine are usually show tunes.

4: Panis Angelicus (Sting’s version)

I have to laugh about the Sesame Street song. I know them all and my children are 33 and 31! Well, and 23 but the little one never did get into Sesame Street. It’s coming in handy singing to the grandbabies. The song I used to get stuck in my head is Big Spender, of course with all the sound effects. Let me get right to the point, bah, bum!

Oh, no, not song worms! Run, RUN!! Even worse is when all you know is the parody of a song, though. My DH has an unfortunate passion for Weird Al songs, so I can sometimes be found to be humming “White and Nerdy”, or “Amish Paradidse”. Sheesh. Oh, and showtunes are impossible to dislodge. I’ll leave you with “Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, silver white winters that melt into Spring, these are a few of my favorite things!”

I listen to music all day long (right now I’m stuck on country) and pretty much like what I listen to. My song worms are songs I like although they tend to be the same song over and over. But you all have done a good job of putting some nasty ones in my head.
Karen H, I’m not familiar with the Double Dutch Bus. Should I just leave it alone? Especially if it’s on your bad list?

I’ve always got songs stuck in my head. My husband will sing or whistle a song, any song, and in a few minutes I’ll be doing the same song and you’ll hear my DH say, “Gotcha!” He loves that game, and I play along sooo well. So I am forever getting caught by the radio, elevator music (when did the songs I loved so well in my teens become elevator music?!), movies, whatever.
Cail – I’ve had Mamma Mia stuck in my head since the trailers for that movie came out and now that I’ve seen it (wonderful movie btw) not only do I sing, but dance as well. When Indiana Jones came out I was whistling that song all the time, drove my kids batty.

I was singing Cookie Monsters song 2wks ago with my girlies at the grands- everytime someone ate a cookie- we belted out the song.lol
Plus I gave Laura a tune worm a few weeks back. I started singing ” It’s hard to be humble” it was too funny!
And during the sleepover at the grands the girls and I kept singing the song “I kissed a girl”
77 yr old Grammie didn’t think it was funny. But then I told her about the song lyrics I used to blissfully sing when I was kid- Lady Marmalade’s french chorus!! not knowing what it meant. and my mother French! MUHhahahahahahahah. the girls just like the beat of kissed anyway. it’s catchy

Judy when my grandmother broke her hip several years ago they did surgery in the evening and then they had her up out of bed the next morning. Keep thinking those good thoughts!

Now, I’m going to be snapping my fingers to The Adams Family theme (thanks, cherie), Baby, It’s Cold Outside (leah, that’s a good one because it will also make me want to dance which I don’t do well, either), Eidelweiss (eviqn, that’s a tricky one because I know only ONE WORD in the whole song), Hey Big Spender (Audrey, that’s a tough one to get out of your head, too), The House of the Rising Sun (Oh yeah, Margaret, trust you to pick one that will make my two note humming voice crack painfully — my roomie will NOT be happy about that!), oh yes, Mama Mia songs (Cail, aren’t they HORRIBLE tune worm songs? So catchy!), My Fovorite Things (Emmiebee, I don’t know why, but that’s the worst one for me from Sound of Music), and MORE!

Thank goodness I don’t know Fresh’s tune worm from Ringo. It sounds particularly pernicious.
Dbrown — Double Dutch Bus is a funky song from oh, the early 80s, I think. Very catchy, though. If you hear it, you will lay awake tonight humming it and trying to do the little rap in the background.

Kari, the Knodike Bar song is a good one! I’m not sure about the commerical, although I can say ‘Corinthian Leather’ EXACTLY the way Mr. Rourke would.

Elsie, noooo! Not ‘We Are Family!’ I’ll never, EVER get rid of that one.
Judy, my friend who was hit with a car had his hip surgery and is doing really well. Said the hard part was being in bed in pain before the surgery. He’s up and walking now. I hope your dad is up and about soon!
Conference Report: Had a great book signing yesterday and got to see all of the goddesses! Julia London looks fabu, all trim and skinny, as does Karen Rose who’d just gone shopping with Claudia D! Claudia, btw, was wearing the most adorable outfit — that woman knows how to dress! Sabrina Jeffries had her assistant with her (We’re all jealous and want assistants now), and Suzanne Enoch was wearing the prettiest silver/gray dress ever. I think we’re all stuffed into Spanx and powdered up for the event, so it was quit glam!
We will DEFINITELY post about our RITA contestants! We’ve all got fingers and toes crossed!

I get the most random song worms at times, thankfully, I learned today, I’m not the only one singing commercials. The main culprits for me are as follows:
1. Zoom, zoom, zoom (stupid car jingle, I don’t even know what kind it is)
2. A specific song from Sesame Street. There used to be a break and it would show a ping pong machine and the song would go a little something like this…1 2 3 4 5, 6 7 8 9 10….11 12. Anybody? Anybody? It might just be me, but it gets in there, and doesn’t let go.
3. Popular, Loathing and Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked.

KarenH, “The House of the Rising Sun” is pretty much a 2 note song, isn’t it? I can only sing the first stanza. I like it even when it gets stuck in my brain.

Yes, goddesses, my little jockette, Olivia, left for 4 days in VA for a huge softball tournament. I took her this morning to meet her ride. Her coach, his helper/friend and 3 other giggly girls. They were already in high gear when I left them. And I don’t mean driving gear. Caoch Jere was still struggling to tied the top thing down on his mini-van when I departed.
Not only could neither her mom nor I go, but she didn’t WANT us to go. Oh the cruelty of children.
And, now, we have KarenH sticking song worms in our heads. Talk about cruel!

I also had Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash in my head on training rides forever. I blame that on one of the other mentors. weasel got it stuck in there for me.
Then, to torture one of our assistants, I merely sing the new Willy Wonka and she has it in her head all day. *evil grin*

Sesame Street has many catchy tunes that later stick in your head forever. For me, it’s “The Elephant Elevator Operator”. I can’t get into an elevator without that song going through my head! Or how about, “Some of these things are not like the others, some of these things are kind of the same”?

I have been properly educated in the art of fine shopping. Claudia is awesome! We did Nordstrom’s in an hour. One hour. My mind was all a-whirly. I told Claudia not to let me leave with blue or black and she took me at my word. I thought for a moment she’d draw blood when I picked out the fifth blue thing, LOL.

You are all making my head go strange with all those songs going round and round, I’m never going to be able to sleep tonight! I have been listening to Amy McDonald so much I seem to have her songs floating around in my head at the moment.
YaYA like Karen H Not the Hey Mickie song it gets so irritating.
I’m off to bed and hope that all those tune worms will keep quiet and let me sleep.( it is 1130 pm here in the Uk)

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. My dad is 83 and was diag with alhzeimer’s about 4 months ago. He is doing well since he is now on meds for it but the doc is worried how it will effect his recovery. The surgery went well so its just wait and see now. I think I am going to bed soon.

I’ll tell you what I had in my head all day long today.
“Honey Honey” and “Mamma Mia” by Abba. I saw Mamma Mia! last night and had those two songs in my head.
Yesterday I had “Dear Maria, Count Me In” by All Time Low. My friend had it in her head and her worm tranfered to my head.
I used to have “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” the Across the Universe movie version, because I just loved that movie and kept watching lol.
And also because I’m a big Fall out Boy fan I’m always singing Sugar, We’re Going Down, I don’t know why I always get stuck on this song but I do.
I don’t watch T.V. much anymore, so I rarely have commercial dittys in my head anymore. Although, it’s easy to get the Elmo’s World song in my head…now that is song worm that never leaves…

I know I’ve gotten song worms, but as of late, there really haven’t been all that many. Is it possible to build up a tolerance to them?
And JudyF, (((HUGS))). I’m glad your dad’s surgery went well. My mom broke her hip several years ago (she was running an errand for me at the time–can I say guilt trip?!), and the first day or so after her surgery, she was pretty groggy, but they did have her up and moving already the next day. I think it’s been about 4 years now. While she has to be careful, she’s moving pretty good, though does run into balance issues every once in a while. I hope his recovery goes well for you!!

3-4 years ago Vonage (a phone company) appeared in the world. They had silly super funny commercials, people doing silly stuff and getting hurt. For some reason I find this hilarious…weird I know. To go with the silly little skits they had a tune, woohoo, woohoo hoo, or some such thing. Well it’s been in my head ever since, we’re talking YEARS…I hum it everyday. Drives my DH NUTS! But I do it un conciously.
It doesn’t bother me, but it does bother anyone around me!
Also, there’s a FRIENDS episode, where Monica is comforting Rachel/Ross’s baby, and she swings the baby back and forth and says (sings) ‘oh baby baby’ in a deep voice…I do this regularly too. Why, I have no idea!
