Dreaming of Colin Firth. Again.

Recently, I’ve had two dreams of Colin Firth.  In one dream, he was the A-list movie star and told me that my ward of state was playing with the other kids (what other kids??).  In the other dream, he was Colin Firth, but he was dressed as Mr. Darcy, and he was standing beside, and smiling at a friend of mine (now I hate her).

Why do I dream of Colin Firth?  Why not George Clooney?  Or Johnny Depp in his pirate clothes?  Is my subconcious delivering a message that only Colin can relay?

But then I had a dream about Jonathan Hull.  His parents and my parents were good friends, and when we were very little, he and I and my brother and another friend, Royal, all played together.  When we went to school, we were always friendly, but we didn’t hang out, and that was true all the way through high school.  I haven’t seen Jonathan in thirty years, although I have heard about him from time to time.  The thing is, I have dreamed about Jonathan several times in my adult life.  Not Royal.  Not even my brother.  Just Jonathan.  But Jonathan was never anything more than a friend, so why have I been dreaming about him for thirty years?

I’m starting to get concerned that Big Tex will reappear in my dreams.  He was my recurring dream when I was a kid.  A five-story tall Cowboy, chasing me down the highway.  He stood outside the Cowboy Cafe in my hometown and scared the crap out of me until I was ten or so. Freddy Kreuger has nothing on Big Tex.

Do you dream about celebrities? Do you ever dream about someone in your past? Do you ever have recurring dreams?

Julia, Firth is hot and I had a link to one of his fan pages on my website, but I switch it for a better fansite when the woman who ran the first one wrote me saying he was gay, to which I replied, “Hey. Don’t tell me things like that. And how is it that you’re running his fansite AND writing people with Bad News? Shouldn’t you be writing to tell me that Colin Ferrel is gay? Isn’t that what the Prez of a Fan Club does? Spread rumors about OTHER stars while protecting her own?”

    She never wrote me back.

Btw, he is NOT gay. Has a wife ‘n all. I think that ‘fansite’ woman hated him and so opened her supposed ‘fansite’ to lure in unsuspecting Firthites and crush their spirits with evil rumors.

Hm. Maybe she really was the pres of the Colin Ferrell fan club.

Either way, I thought she was evil.

I dream about Hugh Jackman (natch!) and also Gregory Counts, who kissed me on the cheek in the Kindergarten. I refer to him as ‘The Young Lothario.’

I don’t know why I dream about GC as I haven’t seen him since Kindergarten, but I sometimes do. Never anything specific, but he’ll just be hanging out there, in my dream, and saying such deep things as, “Giraffes melt the green paper.” and stuff like that.

I have weird dreams. Too much pizza at midnight.

You mean there’s more than 1 Big Tex? I am shocked and saddened. It just doesn’t seem right that the one at the Texas State Fair has a brother down the road. How many tacky 5-story cowboys can the world hold? Now, I’ll be dreaming of the 2 of them. And not in a Colin Firth sort of way, either.
Of course, I haven’t seen the State Fair one in over 30 years, so he may be termite fodder by now.

I once square danced at the Fair, BTW. Just FYI. I don’t dream about celebrities, that I can recall. I used to be able to remember what I dreamed but not these days. I used to dream about being chased and trying to reach a beautiful white house on a hill. I ran endlessly but never got there. Nor did whatever was chasing me, catch me. Haven’t had that dream in many years. I don’t have the white house either.

Three nights in a row, I’ve had violent dreams that resulted in harm to others. What’s a girl have to do to have CF dreams?

  5. Margaret Garland on 18 Jul 2008 at 6:06 am #

I couldn’t leave well enough alone, could I? I just had to go to the State Fair of Texas web site to see if their Big Tex still exists. Yup. He does and he’s just as ugly and scary as ever. Worse, he speaks and it’s enough to make you have insomnia. Go take a listen. If you dare. Bwah-hah-hah! Then, try to sleep tonight. He’s on the left side of the page.

i definitely didn’t dream last night. barely slept. that’s the problem with visiting people and sleeping on a terrible mattress.

the only celeb i really ever have dreams about are Derek Jeter and the Yankees. Rarely do movie stars enter my head. Also rarely do random friends from my childhood enter them either.

  7. Lisa H on 18 Jul 2008 at 7:24 am #

    Julia, yes, yes and yes!

I have dreamed of Johnny Depp. I dreamed he came to my house to pick me up for a date. My husband let him and as we were leaving, Johnny started caressing my deriere. I woke up (darn!) and found it was my husband doing the caressing!

I dream of old boyfriends sometimes. The good ones, the bad ones and the ugly ones. Like Karen H said, they are like giraffes melting green paper. Just weird senarios.

I used to have reoccuring dreams of being chased by a wild Bugs Bunny type rabbit with a knife. I had to untangle all these knots before I could go down the path, where as the bunny could just slice through them. (This was even before I read Claudia’s post the other day about the Bunny Triangle of Death) This was a horrible nightmare for me at the time.

  8. Gannon on 18 Jul 2008 at 7:49 am #

Julia, Colin Firth is excellent dream material! I’ve had dreams about Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, Sean Connery, etc. Hmmmm, I sense a trend here. :)

I’m always perplexed when I dream about someone that I haven’t seen in years! What’s that about?

My other weird recurring dream (sort of) is when I dream of people who are really good friends of mine (in my dream), but in actuality I have no idea who these people are. Have I seen them somewhere before? Walking down the street maybe or in the grocery store? The weirdest theory I ever heard for this situation is that we “astral project” in our sleep, so we really do know these people, but on another plane. *cue Twilight Zone music*

  9. Gannon on 18 Jul 2008 at 7:53 am #

Oh, I forgot a dream I had once. Years ago, I worked out regularly at my local gym (I should be doing this now!) and the owner was very good looking. Tall, dark and handsome and super nice. And married like me! Anyhoo, one night I had a very hot dream where we were alone in the gym, and let’s just say we found some interesting uses for some of the machines! *blushing* I swear I could barely look him the eye after that!

  10. Freedom Writer on 18 Jul 2008 at 7:56 am #

Yes to all three. Just last night Heath Ledger made an appearance in my dreams. I did watch a bio of him on TV last night so that made sense to me. I have had dreams about other celebrities as well as people I knew as a child, and have not kept in touch with. One of my celebrity dreams about Johnny Depp inspired a story idea that I have worked on developing further over the last few years.

I have had recurring dreams about being in college and having a final exam and not remembering where the classroom is because I hadn’t attended class all semester, one about an old house where evil lives on the third floor plus others that are not exact copies of previous dreams, but have similar themes.

As for Big Tex dreams, I remember a dream from my childhood where I was being chased by the Incredible Hulk.

  11. Karen Hawkins on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:00 am #

Big Tex is one scary dude. I can see why Julia and others have nightmares about him.

There’s a bar-b-que place in Kingsport, TN where I grew up that has a huge, badly done Indian. He’s only about two stories, but the funny things is that he looks surprised. His expression is this “WOW! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?” sort of look, which gets really funny when every year, the seniors of one or another of the local high schools, cut off his little loin clothe and you find out that Mr. Indian Man is . . .well, not quite a man.

Of course, HE is as surprised as YOU are.

Lisa H, that bunny dream is eerie. I wonder if Claudia’s cat has similar dreams now?

Btw, one of my dogs has nightmares. He’ll sleep and then start to twitch and then growl, then jump to his feet, shaking. Don’t know what’s chasing him, or fighting him, but he’s ALL out of breath and scared to death.

  12. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:02 am #

I never dream about movie stars. How sad. Had to chuckle at Big Tex though.

When I was little, five or six maybe, my parents took me to one of those traveling carnivals. We rarely did anything like that as we didn’t have a lot of money, but for some reason that night they did. I walked around, eyes huge, and saw the House of Horrors. The front had people being tortured and I remember one woman (very busty woman now that I think about it), being stretched on a rack that looked like a humongous hamster wheel.

I had nightmares for weeks. I still get the creeps thinking about it, although now I understand it was just a ploy to have the big busted woman posed in a way to show off her attributes.

I wish I could dream about Colin Firth. I saw part of the A&E P&P again recently and all I can say is ahhhh…. Mr. Darcy….

  13. Claudia Dain on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:09 am #

I had a dream last night that someone opened a closet in my house that hadn’t been opened in years and gigantic black cockroaches swarmed out. Shudder! I woke up with a start, with a headache, and in a cranky mood.

I used to have a recurring nightmare that my teeth would just tumble out of my mouth, one at a time. I talked to my dentist about it, just as a joke, and he told me I have the longest roots in the world and that my teeth will never fall out. I never had that nightmare again! Which is weird since teeth falling out in a dream is supposed to be a metaphor for something else. Guess not!

  14. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:10 am #

I did use to have nightmares featuring the Partridge Family. Scary, I know. But they were on my side and we were running from vampire zombies with blood dripping from their mouths - on roller skates. Keith Partridge and I were on roller skates, not the zombies. I couldn’t have been more than seven at the time.

Here’s a statue that used to give me pause in Cincinnati - the Frisch’s Big Boy. Always thought he had an evil Chucky gleam in his eye. http://joeorman.shutterace.com/Bizarre/Bizarre_Bigboy.html

Of course the modern day Big Tex is the Burger King head. Millions of children will grow up to have terrifying nightmares in the future and and will sue BK for therapy damages.

  15. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:12 am #

Ew, Claudia, I hate bugs in dreams. I feel like they’re crawling all over me. You poor thing. But you keep a tidy house, so I am sure no cockroach would even dream of toying with you in real life.

  16. Louisa Cornell on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:42 am #

I am not surprised that Karen R has bad dreams. Have you read her books? S_C_A_R_Y! Hey, if you have to have a celebrity in your dream CF isn’t bad. Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Viggo Mortenstern, Orlando Bloom, Roger Howarth, Gerrard Butler, and Clive Owen have all appeared in my dreams. And some of them were …. quite good! My favorite recurring dream features my late DH and we are always folding laundry and talking about inconsequential things.

I have had the big event where I was either not prepared or naked dream! EEEEK!

  17. RachelG on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:46 am #

I never dream of celebs. I wish I did. I’d love to use and abuse Colin Firth.

My reoccurring dreams are always nightmares. I dream of plane crashes and being stuck in elevators.

I just realized what time it was and have to scoot…work and all that nonsense… but I will take a moment to say.. I forget how UGLY Big Tex is… why on earth someone thought that heinous statue was a GOOD idea is beyond me. bleh.

I had reoccuring dreams more as a kid then I do now.. they were mostly nightmares and one helped plant my irrational hatred of spiders. Stoopid dream.

ok more in a bit when i get to work.

  19. Julia London on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:43 am #

I should clarify that while the picture of Big Tex above is heinous, it is not THE Big Tex of my dreams. I think he is long gone, and the Cowboy Cafe has been replaced by a Luby’s or something like it.

But my Big Tex was just as hideous as that one. Margaret, there are like a dozen Big Tex’s in Texas.

  20. Suzanne Enoch on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:44 am #

I’m scared of Big Tex now.

I had a very nice Hugh Jackman dream a couple of weeks ago. *g* Usually, though, I’m trying to remember my high school locker combination or my college class schedule, or I’ve gone back to work full time for Mr. Cranky Pants and my book is overdue.

  21. Julia London on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:45 am #

Hey, did anyone notice Colin Firth’s date up there? These thumbnail posts just don’t justice to my photoshop skills.

  22. Kay on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:46 am #

Never dream about celebs–but daydreaming is different. I HAVE to daydream about them to “see” my hero, right? I even went 30 min early to get my haircut so I w ould have more time to look at the gossip mags. This is RESEARCH, people. At least, that’s my story & I’m sticking with it.

Like SheridanLa, I have nightmares about spiders. And small crabs. DH has a 55 gal fish tank, and thinks that wee crabs with enormous claws are cute. I see them as armed, wet spiders. Sometimes they escape from the tank and it’s up to my wonderful cats to save me from them, LOL.

I have had more nightmares about those stupid crabs than anything else in years!

Now th kids want hermit crabs, yeck.

  23. dbrown3400 on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:53 am #

I have dreams about celebrities that are spy great adventures, especially involving George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan. Sometimes they will play out over several nights like a novel. But my favorite dreams are of my favorite late aunt and grandmother. I find them comforting as they aren’t scary but everyday activities. It’s almost like being with them again.

I saw Big Tex at the Texas State Fair several times but don’t have any haunting memories of him.

Karen H >>>> Btw, one of my dogs has nightmares. He’ll sleep and then start to twitch and then growl, then jump to his feet, shaking. Don’t know what’s chasing him, or fighting him, but he’s ALL out of breath and scared to death.

I don’t know if I twitch and growl, but sometimes I do wake up out of breath and shaking. I don’t remember a nightmare, but my doctor is testing me for sleep apnea. Do dogs have that?

  24. Paula on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:02 am #

I did see who Colin’s date was Julia, you look good together!
I don’t dream about celebraties and very rarely remember what I was dreaming about.

  25. Sheridan LA on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:12 am #

*sigh* I just realized I don’t have dreams with hunky male celebrities in them… what is WRONG with me?!?! The one area where I could have full access to those darlings and I don’t take advantage of it…

  26. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:20 am #

Julia, I took immediate note of Colin’s date. You look mahvelous dahling.

Man, I wish I could do that photoshop thing. I had some photos taken in the UK by a photographer my publisher hired. He said “Not to worry. I was a retoucher in my previous life.” And he WAS. Wow. I look thin and young. I want him to follow me around in real life. His name was Angus, but he wasn’t Scottish.

Julia, you don’t need an Angus to follow you around. You got it down pat yourself.

Kay, just say NO to crabs.

  27. freshechelle on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:28 am #

My childhood recurring nightmare wasbeing caught in the middle of a shoot out at wild West City while being attacked by a German Shepherd. There was a wooden tollbooth I’d run to for protection in the middle of the dusty road.

  28. Lisa H on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:47 am #

Yes, Julia…I just thought being a famous writer, you had many an opportunity to rub elbows and other body parts with handsome men.

Can you make one with me standing next to Captatin Jack?

  29. Julia London on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:49 am #

Kay and Sheridan, when I was in the second or third grade or so, a friend of mine had to go to a series of doctors because her nightmares about spiders were so bad. I’ve often thought about her, wondering what happened to her.

K-Ro, thanks ;-). If anyone ever feels the need to look thin and young, please do email me, LOL. I can hook you up!

  30. Julia London on 18 Jul 2008 at 12:13 pm #

BTW, these dreams make me laugh! The Partridge Family, hahahaaa! A shoot-out at Wild West City!

But Gannon and Lisa H and Suz get my undivided attention. My celebrities tell me important things like giraffes melt the green paper (K-Ha, we’re having the same dream!), but they never actually TOUCH me — now that’s the kind of Colin Firth dream I want to have!

Poor Colin Firth. If only he knew how many middle-aged women dream about him then photoshop their heads over his lovely wife. On second thought, anh–she’s not that lovely.

  31. Margaret Garland on 18 Jul 2008 at 2:44 pm #

Now I see why so many of you are writers. You dream all that stuff up! hee hee I’ve never dreamed of any celebrity. Not even back in the day when I knew what to do with one if I caught him. I used to lust after Randolph Scott and Joel McRae. But only in a wholesome way & I never had them featured in a dream.

KarenH, after the story about Mr. Indian Man, I’m wondering about Big Tex. There may be a reason why he looks and sounds so strange. Every year, at fair time, the newspapers used to tell how much fabric went into the making of his shirt and jeans. No mention of his naughty parts. That would be pretty darned naughty. Talk about being scared! Maybe your dreams were right on, Julia.

And I did see Colin’s sexy date. 6 in the god awful am is no time for me to be witty. You make a charming couple. I want Mr. Darcy. He looks just like Colin, doesn’t he?

  32. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 3:11 pm #

I wonder just how many women photoshop their heads over Colin’s lovely wife. Must be thousands. Or maybe at least hundreds. Okay, maybe just one. And we got her, right here on Mt. Oly.

  33. Kim on 18 Jul 2008 at 3:22 pm #

Memories of my awesome dream with George Clooney still keep me going *g* Once I had a dream about Lenny Kravitz that was just too horrifying for words. *shudders*

    Julia–that Big Tex is SCARY.

  34. Nicole Jordan on 18 Jul 2008 at 4:44 pm #

I wish I would dream about CF, Julia! I envy you, lol.

I can’t remerber dreaming of any big stars, but the last few nights I’ve woken up in the middle of the night with the refrains of certain songs playing over and over again in my head. Last night is was Coldplay’s Viva la Vida. Wonder what that says about me?

  35. Sherri Erwin on 18 Jul 2008 at 4:52 pm #

Tell me he was staring at ME! Am I the friend you hate? I might be able to deal with it, considering CF was standing with you but smiling at me. Oh, no, no man is worth losing a friend. Not even Colin Firth. (wait, I’m rethinking… um, no, not worth it).

  36. Marley Delarose on 18 Jul 2008 at 4:59 pm #

I dreamed of the guy that used to play on TOUR OF DUTY. Talk about an old TV show! Out of the blue. I was left with this impression that he wanted a hot romance with me and I resisted until I woke up because he was so much younger. God, am I a drag!

  37. Kathy/Cookie on 18 Jul 2008 at 5:34 pm #

  38. Kathy/Cookie on 18 Jul 2008 at 5:52 pm #

As someone who suffers from night terrors, you don’t wanna know of the dreams I have!
I once woke my neighbour up in the wee hrs of the am because I was screaming “get off me, get off me” in my sleep.
When I was a child I had the same dream of a Ferdinand type bull happliy munching on grass in a paddock then turning furious and chasing me down.
It was recuring until I hit my 20s.
and I wish I had celeb dreams. I tend to have sexy exboyfriend dreams, I suppose that it good enough.
It’s a wonder All of us didn’t have horrible dreams last night after 10yr old Julia’s blood and gutsy tales using her little sister’s as props and always starring me. Kathy’s kitchen work had “me” pulling out intenstines and cookking them up. and Surgeon Kathy had “me” putting hearts and brains switching places.
the kid was scary gross! lol

  39. evlqn on 18 Jul 2008 at 6:34 pm #

I don’t dream of celebrities that I remember anyway. I usually have soon to be forgotten garden variety dreams. But sometimes I go dream walking into other peoples dreams. I know when I do this because I don’t know anyone or anything in the dream. Very disconcerting to say the least.

  40. Karen Rose on 18 Jul 2008 at 6:40 pm #

    Who is coldplay?

Julia, will you photoshop other people’s heads on Colin Firth’s wife’s body? I like CF, but I want her arms! I could pump iron until I’m 65 and not achieve arm tone like that.

  41. Kathy/Cookie on 18 Jul 2008 at 7:10 pm #

Coldplay is a British band. pretty good music. Chris Martin, the lead singer is married to Gwyneth Paltrow

Julia, what foods do you suggest to induce hot celeb dreams?

  44. Sabrina Jeffries on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:31 pm #

I NEVER dream about celebrities. I rarely even dream sexually about men, and if I do, they’re usually giving me a kiss, and that’s all. And I always feel guilty in the dream, too, telling myself, “Wait, I’m married, aren’t I?”

Deb Marlowe once dreamed I had sex with Brad Pitt (no, she didn’t dream the sex–just that I had some). How I wish I could have had that dream. Sigh. I think it’s unfair that I get laid in my FRIEND’s dreams, but never in my own.

  45. Margaret Garland on 18 Jul 2008 at 8:56 pm #

Totally unfair, Sabrina. Did you punish her? The nerve of some people. Of course, you could have just had twins and lost your figure completely. Look on the bright side.
