Calling Tech Support–Oh wait, that’s me!
Jul 5th 2008
Julia LondonOn Writing!
Working for myself is bliss most of the time. You all know how we goddesses do whatever we want, when we want, from running out first thing in the morning to get trash bags, to sleeping late and then having a coffee before checking in, to blowing off a few days of work to go have fun somewhere. Its great! Its freedom! And we get to do what we love.

BUT…there is always a but. We don’t have that support one gets in an office. No one to make our travel arrangements, no one to file the mounds of paper that seem to build up over time. No legal services, no human resources, no cafeteria where someone else makes your lunch. And the number one kicker for me is no tech support.
I AM the tech support.
This is really startling to me, because I am not usually mechanically minded, but somehow, I have managed to build a wireless network in our home, and keep three computers up and running for various people. I have learned a lot along the way, but I still don’t know nearly enough, and every few years, we will have a big Tech Melt Down.

That happened this week. I have migrated to Apple computers, having added my brand new iMac in May. Yesterday, an operating system update was sent out, which I promptly downloaded. Uh-oh. Something went horribly, horribly awry. Tonight, at 9:30, after three hours on the phone yesterday, and another 6 today, all issues are resolved. Nine hours!
Nothing causes me quite as much stress as technical issues because I know just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to get myself out of real jamb. And when my system is down, I am down. I lost precious hours toward a deadline this week. But I am lucky–the Melt Down could have happened today, and then I would have been stuck until Monday. Living without a computer for that long is my worst nightmare. Just think–this blog wouldn’t be here, and everyone would think I was sleeping off a July 4th hangover!
I always pay for the long-term, heavy duty technical assistance when I buy computers, and its worth it. I don’t use it very often, but when I do, I get every penny out of it.
Who is your tech support? What does computer malfunction do to your life? How tech savvy are you? Can you top 9 hours on the phone with tech support? More important, how was your July 4th holiday??

I too know enough to be dangerous in regards to my computer. As I have mentioned before machines and my ultra talented sister have a mutual hate on. So that leaves me to muddle through any problems. Fortunately we bought the extended warranty with our Dell so I have tech support until March 2011. My longest time with tech support was 7 hours, we had to virtually redo my system after a particularly nasty virus. I had a young man from India helping me. He was fascinated by my screen-saver, it was a picture I took of a snow-laden creek bank near my house. Oddly enough he rarely sees snow.
And my 4th was great! The boys decided they didn’t want to go anywhere this year for the 4th. They wanted to stay home and have a BBQ with a few friends. They spent about 4 hours at the Olympic Field Trials before coming back home to shoot off their fireworks with some of the neighbors. A fun day topped off with the news my granddaughter is finally in big girl panties.

Ummmmmm, I’m my friend’s tech supprt, but I do know enough to know when I can’t fix the problem.
Then I ask my 28 yr old nephew James. the family wizard in all things electronic
I’ve learned how to go in (very carefully, with a manual) to fix the registry keys value when my movie maker program would freeze on me halfway through a project. Or when a virus screwed up my system a couple years ago and highjacked my pc.
I am also smart enough to know when to just unplug and get the professionals to fix. I’m Ms Fix-it for “my girlies” family computor. Set them up on the net, taught their mom how to load and print her pictures…etc
I spent 3hrs yesterday trying to get a nasty bug out…and 5hrs the week before. neither worked, so off to the pc hospital for the cpu. they have major disc tray malfunctions too. The girles are lost without their msn messenger but I tell them to use that ringing phone thing. haha. When the pc wouldn’t even shut down, I unplugged and told them it was time for the docs.

I hate it when I can’t fix the problem myself…but that is true in anything I do.
my great nephew has this trait tooo. to hear a 2yr old say “me dooie” is hilarious.
but especially dangerous when he’s figured out how to start his dad’s(my nephew James) ATV
scary kid!
Karen Hawkins on 05 Jul 2008 at 7:09 am #
Kathy, I’d worry about a 2 yr old who could start an ATV, too! He’ll be one of those 8-yr-olds you read about who take the old family car out for a spin one day while their mom is napping.
My guy is TS (Tech Support) II, but I’m TS I. I always try to fix things, but if I can’t, then he’ll chip in when he’s home. So far, so good!
My problem is that if something goes wrong, and it doesn’t REALLY bother me, I’ll just leave it that way until after my deadline. Like my printer runs on bluetooth and all of the sudden, my puter won’t ‘talk’ to it so I have to hook up with the usual old usb cord. It’s inconvenient, but it’s deadline week so I just leave it.

I know some stuff, but nearly as much as my nephew. He’s in his finally year at Georgia Tech, majoring in computer something or another. He has been co-oping for a few years with a major company in their technical department and they have already offered him a full-time network administrator position when he graduates. He was just in SF a couple weeks ago for some big yearly Apple conference. So, when I have a problem I can’t fix, I just call Chad and tell him his Aunt needs some help
Kathy/Cookie on 05 Jul 2008 at 7:56 am #
Karen, the kid is hilarious though.
He had his toy mower out at his Nana’s. My sister looks after him while his parents work. She runs a small daycare, so he gets lots of friends to play with.
He pulled a few times on the rip cord, threw his hands up and yelled to the sky some unintelligeble words- probably trying to swear like his daddy- and threw himself on the floor wailing “oh man!”
Debbie and I started laughing hysterically at him!
yup, just like James! lol!
James is really a wiz at the ‘putor stuff. he’s built his own, many times. and my first pc was one that he had built.
He’s a power engineer by trade.
Hunter takes after his mom too. a stubborn attitude gets him far.
She has a bum arm that she can’t lift him with, so as an infant he instinctually held on. He helps himself to snacks in the fridge, and rides the dog as a horse. Grizz is a huge dog, so he can handle it.
Can you tell, I wuv my Hunter- a lot!???
lol

Cookie, you’re nephew is a doll! Too cute for words!
I am NOT mechanically “reclined” so thank God for MY nephew AND the Geek Squad when I can’t get to my nephew.
I know just enough to be fatal to my computer! My nephew says I am computer challenged (because his Mom said it isn’t nice to say his aunt is an idiot!)
The worst? My computer DIED, that’s right DIED, dead, not coming back even if I take it to a snake handling service and pray over it. And my whole book was on the computer with NO BACKUP!!!! EEEEEEK! This happened about a year ago. Thank God for the owner of our local bookstore, or rather her husband. He managed to retrieve my book and a number of other things. Needless to say, jump drives are now my friend!

I am pretty good tech support in my house, and I too know enough to know when I need to call professional tech support. I hate it though when you call and they treat you like a blithering idiot, although they probably get their share of those. I too have a Dell and their extended warranty. They replaced my laptop’s hard drive and I needed to spend some time on the phone with a helpful young man in Salt Lake City to get all of the OS (Operating System) and drivers re-installed. It took me just a couple of hours on the phone with him, but it took me two days to finish installing software and update upon update for the software and OS. Fortunately I am a back up nut and had all my writing on a Flash Drive.
My soon to be ex son in law is also a wiz at computers and he used to work for free. But that is the only reason I am sad that he is a soon to be ex because now I will have to pay someone if one of the older machines goes on the fritz.

I used to be a tech support analyst before they moved my job to India
And I’m married to a computer engineer - we have ten computers (or is it eleven) in a house of only four people. But even with all our techno-savvy, it can still take hours or even days to fix some problems - like when my laptop’s operating system decided to crash a while back and we had to reformat everything. I still haven’t loaded everything back on it - but then again that must mean I don’t really need it, doesn’t it?
I’ve often wondered how non-techy people survive without their very own Gizmo Guy handy. Although we’re often called on to provide support because other people just aren’t willing to learn. Good on you, that you have learned how to do a lot of this stuff yourself.
Paula on 05 Jul 2008 at 9:03 am #
I can fix some things but we haver a couple of friends who are my back-up when all else fails. My DH works with computers but pleads ignorance at home when something doesn’t work. I’ve also got a very good friend who helps me out with bits and pieces if I need it.
Julia London on 05 Jul 2008 at 9:15 am #
I have online friends that can help up to a certain extent. At some point when the big MeltDown (MD) happens, someone needs to actually see what I am seeing, I think.
As for the 4th, Jack London and our little ward of state and I attended two parties yesterday. We were thoroughly exhausted–too much sun, too much sangria, and too much food–and none of us made it to fireworks. But it was a grand day!
LisaK on 05 Jul 2008 at 9:19 am #
As for the question what computer malfunctions do to my life - for some reason I couldn’t go online the day before yesterday and I almost went crazy! I’m not addicted to the Internet or my computer or something but it really bothers me when my plans (that means “the reasons why I actually settled down in front of my computer”) are thwarted by that not-working technical pighead. Fortunately, even though I’m not very skilled in all these things (I recognize that especially at the moment - my aunt is visiting us and she claims to know very little about computers but all I can think about when she asks me about mine is “What the hell is she talking about?” - very embarassing!) I managed to repair it all by myself. One of the little things in life that make Lisa proud!

I know enough to get myself out of basic jams on my computer. If its serious or I just don’t know what is wrong I call my nephew. He thought my hottie folders were funny… LOL
At work we have some idiot guy that comes in and helps. 9/10 he makes things worse but we are a small company and so we don’t have an IT dept so they relay on him.
Lisa H on 05 Jul 2008 at 9:27 am #
Oh Julia, I feel your pain…I know very little about technical things, and I would be one of those people on the phone all day. I am trying to learn more, but I think mechanical and technical things fit into the category of “you either get it or you don’t” I don’t!
I do have a lovely lady/friend who does my web page. She knows things like how to put pictures in files, and send them to Mars and stuff like that, but alas it costs to have her come by.
Judy F on 05 Jul 2008 at 9:29 am #
my 4th was very quiet. spent most of the day in my pj’s. Called my sibs to with them a happy bday. Took a nice nap. Watched some of the olympic trials. Read a lot. A very good day.
Spent most of the night calming the cat down with all the fireworks going off.

i’m pretty good with computers. i’ve installed many a hard drive etc to my PC. Last night my mac decided it didn’t feel like turning on. i used my ‘wait and see’ method which involved going to bed, and trying again this morning. it worked! yay.

I am tech support in my house. I work with computers so for me it’s my day job too. I will avoid calling tech support if I can help it, and when I do it is usually elevated to a level 2 or higher. The last time I called ts was when we hooked up our DSL. I could not get into the router to configure it. TS was not much help so I ended up just returning the router and buying another. Voila problem fixed.
Kathy/Cookie on 05 Jul 2008 at 10:41 am #
as for the way I spent the 4th…it’s not a holiday here, but I spent the afternnon with “my girlies”. helping the older two pack for a soccer tournie away with their dad, and staying with the younger two.
it was sooooo hot at their house, and I’m still recovering from survivor sleeplessness, that last night I fell asleep on the couch at 7, woke at 9:30, took a shower and went to bed.
Julia London on 05 Jul 2008 at 11:09 am #
SuzyQ, I read an article about that once. They said these big companies that sell technogizzos want it to be so easy and work right out of the box, because most people do what you do — they buy a brand, it doesn’t work, they take it back and buy another brand instead of replacing that one with one of hte same brand. And further, they likely will not buy that brand again. its because there are so many techno dweebs in the world and we fear what doesn’t work. Interesting, huh?
SheridanLA on 05 Jul 2008 at 11:18 am #
I am the tech support at home, for my dad, for my friends and for work. I am also one of the group that know when to call tech support… course, I usually start with telling them to turn to page 2 of their “troubleshooting guide”.. yes, I restarted.. yes, I checked this.. yes, I did that..
My fave moment was some jerk they sent out to hook up my dad’s cable modem. The guy had never worked on Apples.. ok, I can understand that… but then refused to listen to me when I gave hints on what to do. It would not work and he kept telling me there had to be a hardware install wizard run.. I said.. no, this is not a windoze machine.. it is plug and play.. it goes around and around.. I told him there is something wrong with the hardware or the ethernet cable - not the computer.. would not listen.. so I let him putter for a couple HOURS as he ignored me and continued to do what would not work. Called a friend of mine who did the same type job as this guy and handed him the phone….
SheridanLA on 05 Jul 2008 at 11:26 am #
(cuz you know a man’s voice telling you the same thing is always more reliable *snort*)
ohmygosh.. it was a faulty ethernet cable.. My dad just smiles as I said to him (in front of the misogynist installer moron )MIM)) “wow, a faulty ethernet cable and NOT the computer.. I should have called Chris 3 hours ago to confirm that for me when I figured that was what it was.”
MIM glared at me. He had been griping about how he was missing his next 2 appointments or something. Had he listened to me, he woulda been outta there in about 30 minutes.
punk. heh
Freedom Writer on 05 Jul 2008 at 11:27 am #
Sheridan, don’t you hate it when they don’t listen to you? We had a problem when our DSL went out and the cable company told us it was a problem with our computer not their lines. We had several computers including PC’s & Apples and the DSL would not work on any of them. I spent 2 hours on the line with the guy trying to convince him that his lines were the issue and he never would listen to me. I had to go to work so I hung up with nothing resolved. An hour later my daughter called the cable company to see if she could talk to ts to get the DSL working again and the first thing she got was a recording saying that service was out in our area. Duh, I had told them that several hours earlier. Rant! Rant! Needless to say we no longer do business with the cable company.

Strange that this should be the topic of the day because I’ve lost access to YouTube. It tells me I don’t have the latest Adobe FlashPlayer or access to javascript, both of which I spent all night trying to update. The java stopped mid-install (I took java programming and know how to install it) and Adobe told me it installed successfully umpteen times. I decided at 3AM I don’t need YouTube.
Although I can install hardware and software (normally) I’m not as computer savvy as I was when I was training and installing networks back in the 80s and 90s. I got burned out and didn’t have a pc for years. After I got one again, my learning curve has been slower.
I had a virus that I spent a month off and on with tech support trying to get rid of the aftermath. I still have as background a network interface that I know I need to get into the registry to get rid of but I’m too nervous to do it. Help Kathy/C!

My Fourth was quiet with hot dogs and rounds of programs on three networks with good entertainment and fireworks on each without leaving the comforts of home.
Karen Hawkins on 05 Jul 2008 at 12:42 pm #
Honestly, is there ANYTHING more frustrating than when your computer goes out and you know you’re going to have to talk to an IT person who is, in some way, going hint that it’s your fault?
I hate that but they must get it in their training because they all do it.

Yes, Julia, that is the worst part of being self-employed. I had a friend staying with me this week who is not only techie BUT an expert MAC user, so I had in-house tech support for a week. It was HEAVEN. She got my free printer from MAC to scan (we tried every which way to get it set up properly, including using Mac’s tech support), and she got one of my zip drives formatted for both the Mac and the PC. I just now thought of the other thing I was going to ask her to look at. Doh!
See, guests at MY house work!
I was very grateful.
My 4th was fab (at least until the drive home in pouring rain). I partied with Deb Marlowe, Caren Crane Helms, and Claudia, plus husbands and other assorted guests. It was a blast!
Julia London on 05 Jul 2008 at 1:27 pm #
You guys really do hang out together!
Sabrina, or Sheridan, I wish someone had been here today. My brand new imac, which I absolutely love, is about to be boxed up to go off to the the genius bar. I don’t know what is up with it, but its not working properly still. I’ve decided I’ve wasted enough of my time, its only six weeks old, and they need to get it fixed, by God.
I remembered something else that is a downside of being self-employed. No one brings in cakes or cookies to the office. You have to do it. I could really use some cakes and cookies right now
Kathy/Cookie on 05 Jul 2008 at 2:07 pm #
dbrown3400, go into Norton- symantic and look up the specific worm/virus/ whatever you have.
they have an indepth look at how to change the registry keys. I atcaully ggogled the key words that popped up when my pc was infected, then looked it up at the Norton support site.
You can always use system restore… I’m assuming you are using a pc with Windows. (I don’t do mac) You can go back to a specific date when the youtube would still let you in.
I find my Help and Support teaches me many things.
Go into help, clink on index and type in system retore. there will be many choices, but start out at the beginning with “new with Windows XP”
send me an email, and I can “talk” you though it.

Sheridan don’t you just hate the “There,t here little woman” pat on the head you get from some of these guys? You want to rip their arm off and beat them to death with it.
Before we switched to cable internet, LOVE IT, we had DSL with Qwest and we had a major issue trying to get online. We called Rent-a-nerd for help and one of their women came out to do the work. She spent over an hour trying to fix the problem before she called Qwest tech support to tell them the Ethernet port was defective in my DSL modem. We were on the phone for another hour and a half before the dweeb would even listen to us and that was after we asked for the next monkey up the tree. We found out that qwest will not replace the modem if there is one working port on it, such as the S-port (?). Never mind that the wouldn’t work on my computer. I ended up going to Circiut City buying a new modem and solving the problem myself.
I am much happier since I dumped DSL for cable.

I generally don’t have computer problems I can solve and DH gets a little … intense when he has to fix a computer. My BIL is a network person and very knowledgable, so he’s the first person I always call. (He’s also my go-to guy for anything having to do with computers or spying or remotely operated cameras for my villains - it’s great!)
I also buy the heavy duty warranty with my Dell. I’ve used it several times and Julia is quite right - when you need it, you really need it!
Other than computers and some electrical outlet issues, DH is very handy and this is good as I’m not.
I think one of the worst parts of being self-employed is finding good health insurance. DH is a cancer survivor, so individual policies don’t work for us. We have to do group coverage, which is hard to find outside of a job that offers it. Grrrr.

Both of my sons are computer geniuses but they are always changing things to “make it easier” for me and then I can’t do squat on my computer until I get it changed back. So I rarely ask for their help.
My oldest son has worked as a techie for 12 years now, he spent nearly 7 of it as a trainer for other techs.

Julia, I’d send you a cake if I could bake a decent one. I don’t suppose “cyber-cakes” are of any use…
Are you still doing WW? Did you try their little carrot cakes? They’re pretty good when you want a cake taste. Of course, they suck when you want a C-A-K-E.
We had this cake in England, in the Costwolds, called “Lumpy Bumpy.” True to its name it was both lumpy and bumpy, with nuts and marshmallows and gooey chocolate topping. I only had a taste of DH’s piece, but it was really good. I want that now.
Janae on 05 Jul 2008 at 2:22 pm #
It depends on the problem. Mostly dh handles the tech support. On occasion we have received help from my brother who does IT work for the Navy and my bil who used to repair computers in the Marine Corps.
It appeared that we’d have to be getting a new laptop when the screen died. My bil told my dh what part to buy and replaced it - for less than $50. Other times my brother has fixed software problems that could have meant hours on the phone. Then, there have been times when dh has spent hours on the phone, trying to fix a problem.

evlqn.. I used to work at a store that only sold computers made by a company named for a fruit grown in orchards. heh .. Luckily, most of the time I was in the back, but when i had to go to the front, I was usually fortunate in who I assisted.. but sometimes.. oy.. I got the pervs (looking at the fruit on the front of my shirt.. “oh, did you grow those apples yourself?” - snerk. of course, they are forbidden fruit.) to the clueless who wanted to pretend to have a clue.. If i got one of the “you are woman, you don’t know computers” types, i would tell them what they needed to know, then take them to the genius bar, repeat what I told them to the genius - who would confirm.. most of the time, they would still not get a clue.. but at least I had “genius” confirmation to back up my “told ya so” look.
mmm. brownies..

How fun, Judy!
I’m lucky to have my dh for my techie, but I was really proud of myself… two times recently I helped HIM solve some computer problems.
Julia, I feel for you! But at least you got good service. The last time I had a computer problem that neither I nor my dh could solve, I used the Microsoft Tech support option and paid $50 to have them solve it…. and they screwed up so badly, it took 3 days and countless hours and 6 different technicians — 2 at their very advanced levels — to get my computer back to neutral. At least they didn’t charge me the 50 bucks. That would have been the final straw.

I am terrible with computer laptop fixing. My computer has “coded” on me twice and needed instant transplant for survival, which means bye bye to all memory and vital info. Luckily I am not as relient on my computer for my work or anything. I don’t pour my blood, sweat and soul into the blank page as my fellow goddesses do. I can’t imagine a masterpiece being swallowed by a computer malfunction. It sends chills down my spine just thinking about it. Be kind back up your work ladies!

I am Tech Support as is my DH. I am lucky in that I was the first group of students in High School that had computers in the class room.
For everyone, who has had computer issues….BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP! In Windows you can set up a time for the computer to automatically back up to an external storage devise. With a Mac its as simple as Time Machine plus external storage. If you want easy storage…Drobo is the easiest, non-techie user friendly. It automatically saves your stuff twice in two different places. The hard drives, when they fail (all will fail eventually no matter what system you use) can be slipped in and out by unlatching the clips. Clip in a new one, and Drobo is going again…
http://www.drobo.com/
Also if you use promo code: callie lewis, you can get a discount.
I do not work for Drobo, I am a very satisfied customer! Best regards to all.
