Happy Fourth of July!!

When I think back on past July 4th holidays, a couple of favorites come to mind. One was when I was around ten years old, when my family visited my grandparents in Oklahoma. On that warm summer evening, we picnicked beside a big lake and then caught fireflies in glass bottles and lit sparklers and watched fireworks bursting over the water. Ah, the innocent pleasures of childhood.

Another favorite was when I was all grown up listening to the Cincinnati Symphony play in the park… again food, friends and family, fireworks, combined to make some lovely memories.

Here’s hoping you make lots of great memories this holiday for future years to come!

.
Do you have any favorite 4th of July memories that stand out in your mind? And do you have any special wishes for your fellow Goddesses on this Independence Day?

Happy firecrackers, BBQs, days off, summertime joy and Independence Day for those of us stateside!

Favorite memories.. huh… mine usually are of some sort of mischief.. lighting fireworks off my friend’s roof. then running from the police when they came to confiscate em.. then holding a firework show for the neighbors in our cul-de-sac… then hiding bags of the “good” ones and handing over the cheezy ones to the police when they came to confiscate em… then holding more fireworks shows behind my dad’s house on the pond.. then playing innocent when he would find shells all over the lawn for weeks.. teach him to leave town on a national holiday. heh.

*sigh* I will always and forever be a troublemaker

    .•:*¨¨*:•. Happy 4th! .•:*¨¨*:•. (I’ll try to behave this year…maybe…) ;)

    hahaha! Sheridan, don’t go changing!

Happy 4th to my American Goddesses!!!
my aunt married an American- they live in Williamsville, NY. They have two celebrations this week, Canada Day and Independance Day. Party people!
my next door neighbours one house removed have had a big party on Canada Day for as long as I can remember. they shoot off fireworks- probably not a good thing with all of our tall trees around, but they never seem to get into trouble!
    lol
I watch the fireworks in Halifax Harbour from my front porch, then head to my back deck to watch theirs.
One more set for Natal Day August 4th, and I’ve filled my fireworks watching quota for the year.

Have a wonderful, fun-filled 4th of July, Goddesses! We are off later to celebrate with friends, sitting on their front porch sipping Bloody Marys and watching the local parade. Later tonight we’ll be watching the fireworks.

    Everyone be safe!

Happy 4th everyone. I am so grateful to live in this country…even though we are not perfect, we have so very much to be thankful for.

Hi Nicole – I have to say it’s good to be home in time for the 4th!

When I lived in Cincinnati, my first house was just behind the mega-mall, which did the most incredible fireworks display. We could see all but the most low-lying sparklers from the picnic table in our back yard.

I remember our friends coming over for a barbecue, a cold beer and lots of conversation as we waited for the fireworks to start. That’s a nice memory!

    Happy 4th everyone!

My favorite 4th of July memory actually took place on the 5th of July. We are retired Air Force and in 1985 we were living in Germany. On the 5th of July we were in West Berlin. I will never forget standing before the Berlin Wall and there, as far as the eye could see, were stencils of the Statue of Liberty. Some were plain, others a riot of colors. The next day my son and I went into East Berlin. The wall on that side was stark white, the better to see anyone who might try to escape. To me, freedom will always be linked withthat painted wall.

Happy 4th everyone. We would have some great family picnics. Its also my brother and sisters bday so there were presents for them and cake to. They used to say the fireworks were for them. LOL

I watched the fireworks from my living room last night. I live across from the park and can see most of them clearly. Beats being out in the heat and dealing with the crowd. My niece and I used to go to them every year, those are my favorite times.

Happy 4th of July to some of the most INDEPENDENT women I know!! I have to work, but I will be home in time to watch the Boston Pops! Love that 1812 Overture.

I”ve always loved the fireworks on the 4th. I remember being 6 or 7, going to the high school field to see the town fireworks and thinking those sparks were going to fall on me so I wore my mother’s big movie star sunglasses for the whole show.

A few years back, I was in Pittsburgh at a Pirates’ game. Their post game Independence Day fireworks display was incredible because it was over the river, relecting off of Pittsburgh many beautiful shiny glass skyscrapers. It was really stunning.

1996 we celebrated the 4th of July in the Central City, Nebraska area with my dh’s family. We started the day at a parade in town that had my dh’s 2 uncles on a float for their 75th and 80th birthdays. Then we went to one of their farms for a picnic where we ate, rode horses, fished on the river, and I got to get to know my mother in-law’s side of the family. That night we got on a hayrack ride down to an open field for fireworks bought out of state. It was really an old fashioned 4th full of great memories.

Today it is raining, but we will make homemade ice cream and grill out anyway. Happy 4th of July Mt. Oly friends! I’ll give my Air Force dh an extra kiss today, because “Freedom isn’t Free”.

Claudia, you were right, I was wrong. I harassed you about the garbage bag crisis. I just accidentally tossed food trash in my bag-less trash can, I cringed when I realized what I did. The fates got back at me for making fun of you.

Oh, these memories are so lovely!

    Welcome back home, K-Ro!

Happy 4th everyone! We have always spent the 4th at my aunt’s house for a family picnic. Every year it varies to the amount of people that make it, the longest traveler one year was my cousin from Arizona. I’ll be heading there again today, but it doesn’t look to good today weather wise.

Fresh! My heart bleeds, honestly. Trash mess is the *worst* mess. I can’t even gloat.

Welcome home, Karen!! We’re all expecting a full disclosure, with illustrations, concerning your Dream Trip (well, it’s my dream trip).

My daughter gets home tonight after six weeks in France. I think this is going to be my most memorable July 4th ever!

Nicole, your Oklahoma 4th mirrors several of mine spent on Grand Lake just outside Miami, OK. We would go fishing and water skiing, then have a barbecue before the fireworks. It took me a while to master skis but after I did the sensation was wonderful. Of course, my brothers popped right up. Arrgh.

Happy 4th to everyone. I’m looking forward to the fireworks displays on television tonight as it’s raining here with thunderstorms predicted for later on. Louisa, the 1812 Overture is an annual event for me as well.

KarenR, it’s good to have you back on Mt. Oly. Like everyone else, I’m eager to hear about your trip.

    Happy July 4th Goddesses.
Welcome back KarenR! I WANT TO SEE PICTURES!
Congrats, Paula. It’s so nice to hear someone’s good news.

Our July 4th–for the past 9 years—has been spent at the Korean Culture Camp our kids attend in WI. We feast on BBQ beef, cucumber salad, rice, Korean dumplings, watermelon and kimchee. YUM. We get to watch the local fireworks and celebrate being Americans with a different background.

Tomorrow we will grill brats at home and have coleslaw, iced tea and peach cobbler.

When I worked in DC, I could see the fireworks from the hospital where I worked. I worked almost every July 4th night. :-)

My favorite 4th of July was today. We had friends come over for Texas Chicken (thank you Anthony Bourdain), rice, potato salad, veggie tray, watermelon, and strawberries and blueberries in whipped cream. We had a nice visit and then the boys went with one of our friends to the Olympic field trials. And when they came back we joined the rest of the neighborhood down at the dead end for fireworks. It was very lowkey and throughly enjoyable. The best part is it is exactly the way the kids wanted to spend the day.
Happy 4th all you goddesses. I hope you had the kind of day I had.

    >>>Today is a day for celebration my DH was told his job is SAFE. YEAH thank goodness for that.

Whoohoo, Paula, that’s wonderful news! We’re all very glad for you.

Evqln, sound like a perfect holiday. Hope eveyone’s else’s 4th was just as lovely.

We ate way too much but had a great time with good friends… first a neighborhood breakfast, then a party/pot luck at our house where we watched a dozen different fireworks displays over the Salt Lake Valley. And I still managed to get 4 pages written in between, so I’m proud of myself, even if I pigged out when I shouldn’t have. *grin*
