Name That Book

At the best of times, naming a book is difficult for me. What usually happens is that I give Avon 50 or so titles and they reject all of them and come up with one on their own. The only title I’ve ever kept for any of my books is Tangled Up In You.

Yesterday my editor at Avon emailed me. They’re having a cover conference for my May 2009 book and they need a title. As always, I gave them a bunch and they rejected them all. So, I am appealing to all you goddesses out there to help me name my new book. Here’s a short synopsis:

Heroine Faith Duffy was a stripper turned playboy playmate. For the past five years she has been married to a man fifty-one-years older than she is and living as his trophy wife. The book opens with the death of her old rich husband who leaves her his hockey team. Until the death of her husband, she’d been socializing with the Seattle elite and doing charity work. After her husband dies, she becomes persona non grata in that society and gets kicked out of their clubs. Now she must figure out where she belongs, and what she’s going to with the twenty-two hockey players she suddenly owns.

Hero Ty Savage is captain of the hockey team. His main goal in life is to win the Stanley cup championship. He is not happy that the new owner is a trophy wife who knows nothing about hockey. He thinks she’s a gold digger and a bimbo, and the last thing he needs is to feel an overwhelming attraction for the new owner.

Yeah, I know that the synopsis pretty much sucks. Which why I never write a synopsis anymore. But here’s the deal. If Avon uses one of your titles, I’ll announce it here in the Goddess Blogs and send the winner a copy of my very first hockey book, Simply Irresistible.

Oh my gosh, I am DYING to read this book now! Thanks for the cruel tease. We have to wait how long?

    Titles . . . titles . . . lemme see ….

How about HEART OF GOLD? That sort of goes with the story theme of ‘gold-digger’ but yet ‘worth more.’

Or SHE’S ALL THAT meaning she’s all you see . . . AND more.

Or GOING FOR THE GOLD, which would be Ty going for both the gold AND the gold-digger.

Hmmm . . . I’ll have to think of some more.

The book sounds great Rachel! I’ll have to think some more but here’s the first thing that popped in my head:

I’m with Karen. I’m lusting for NABD and you throw the plot line for a book that’s 12 months away at me. Not fair! Oh well. I guess I have a good reason to live another year.

Your publishers have done well by you on titles so far, Rachel.

The book sounds great. One of my favorite authors off of Mt. Oly says they like aliteration. So how about “The Fortunes of Faith”. I like the name Faith and it lends itself to many a good title name. “Finding Faith”, “Faith Under Fire”

  35. Ellen on 02 May 2008 at 8:35 am #

LMAO Suzy. You know me too well. When I saw “Have a little Faith” my mind tumbled into a free fall of totally uncouth and lurid comments. But even I will use some discretion this early in the day.

It sounds fantastic! I think you do a fine synopsis; it sure had me salivating!

I stink at titles, so no help there. Just from LaurieG alone you should have about 100 to send to Avon.

Puck Bunny, Body Check, Fast Puck are my current favs.

  44. RachelG on 02 May 2008 at 9:10 am #

Wow, I just dragged myself out of bed and you guys have been busy for hours.

I gave Avon some really good titles like Twist Of Faith and Losing Faith. Sounds to religious, they say. I gave them Arm Candy–they said no.

Then I gave them my fave title: Puck Off. They laughed like I was kidding and said no.

  45. Karen Rose on 02 May 2008 at 9:11 am #

Okay, I now have my vacation books picked out ;-) Thanks, Margaret.

Also thank you to Rachel for writing hockey books!

Gannon, I like your Puck Me Baby One More Time! *g*

  49. Margaret Garland on 02 May 2008 at 9:43 am #

I don’t think the suits will go for words that are in other titles of Rachel’s. Like Irresistable and Score(s).

This is interesting. I’m always grumbling & griping about stupid names given to books. But it’s not easy to come up with something. Of course, I’m not getting paid a salary to do so, either. My other pet peeve is synopsis written by somebody who hasn’t read the book in question.
I can’t imagine Avon going for porn-y titles. Even if they are funny as heck.

    SAVAGE FAITH

Rachel, my first thought was “Have Faith” or “How to Have Faith” and my very next thought was, “No, sounds like an inspirational.” So I guess Avon and I are on the same wavelength.

Good luck with the title. I suck at them, too, but Avon is usually also pretty picky. I once sent them 250 titles to choose from for a book (150 from a website contest I’d run). They discarded them all and came up with A Dangerous Love. Huh?

    So good luck!! :-(

  54. Nicole P on 02 May 2008 at 11:12 am #

I am not going to make any suggestions for 2 reasons.
#1 because I suck really bad at coming up with titles for everything.
#2 I already own Simply Irresistable and LOVE THAT BOOK!!!
But I am looking forward to reading this book when it comes out…..so old Virgil finally bites the big one eh???

  61. TrustMe_2_Forget on 02 May 2008 at 11:54 am #

I cheated and looked up some hockey slang…here are some I thought interesting as a title…

    “DUMP AND CHASE”
A style of hockey where a team shoots the puck into one of the corners of the offensive zone and then pursues it. This is opposed to carrying the puck into the zone.

    “SIN BIN”
    Penalty box.

    “ATTACH ZONE”
The other team’s end of the ice, inside the blue line

    “CROSS CHECKING”
A penalty for hitting an offensive player with the stick held horizontally in both hands. This simple act is not a penalty unless accompanied by an arm thrust, the hitter leaving their feet, or intent to injure is apparent.

    “LIT UP”
Scored a large number of goals on the keeper. From the goal lamp behind the goal which the goal judge turns on after a goal is scored

  62. TrustMe_2_Forget on 02 May 2008 at 11:55 am #

    OOPs…ment ATTACK ZONE…

  63. TrustMe_2_Forget on 02 May 2008 at 11:57 am #

    “RIPPLE THE MESH”
The act of scoring a goal

    sorry couldn’t resist

    Faith in the Sin Bin

    heh.

How old is Virgil when he kicks off, anyway? 102? Wasn’t he in his 70’s when he almost married one of my favorite heroine, Georgeanne Howard? How many times was the old coot married? I can’t wait till next May. Whiiiinne!!!!

BTW, Lexie is one of the most fun kids I’ve read about in a romance novel. Love her, love her, love her. Such a girly girl. LOL

  66. RachelG on 02 May 2008 at 12:27 pm #

Virgil is 81 when he kicks the bucket. The heroine is a former playmate of the year, so she’s quite the trophy wife.

Every one of Rachel’s hockey books is on my keeper shelf….love them! “See Jane Score” is thread bare because I have read it so many times.

Great list of possible titles…the only one I can come up with now is PENALTY FOR HOOKING.

Whatever the title, I’ll be in line to buy it the day it is released!

  70. Margaret Garland on 02 May 2008 at 5:37 pm #

I saw several titles with Trophy in them, but not the same as yours, Karen. Anything with Trophy in the title sounds good.

Rachel, after the dusts settles and the book has a definite name, I’d love for you to blog your rejected ones.
