Mt. Oly welcomes Brenda Novak!

Brenda Novak is the national bestselling author of 25 novels. Summer 2008 will see the release of her next three romantic suspense stories—TRUST ME, STOP ME, and WATCH ME. Visit www.brendanovak.com to participate in her annual on-line auction for diabetes research which takes place May 1 – May 31st. So far, together with her generous donors and shoppers, Brenda has raised more than $250,000 to help her son and others like him.

So without further ado, here is the awesome Brenda Novak!
As a writer, I always get asked whether I write from personal experience. In ways, I do, and the new series I’m kicking off this summer is a perfect example of that. TRUST ME (May 27th), STOP ME (June 24th) and WATCH ME (July 29th) are based on a fictional victim’s charity in Sacramento called The Last Stand. The three heroines met at a victim’s support group after each one experienced a different kind of violence. They’re determined to heal, to fight back and to help others do the same, which is why they decide to start The Last Stand.

While my fictional charity is geared toward violent crime because I write romantic suspense and thought it would be fascinating to see these women tackle some very interesting and difficult cases, the concept of using personal passion to motivate came from my own desire to make a difference to those struggling with diabetes.

Six years ago, when my youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1, I felt hurt and wanted to fight back, too. Desperately. I just didn’t know how. I had five kids at home and some very tight book deadlines. But then I attended a silent auction at the local elementary school and realized that I could do a similar event on my Web site, where I could utilize the traffic I’d already established.

In my first three auctions, I managed to raise a combined total of $250,000, and the 2008 auction looks as if it will at least match that amount. A shopper’s paradise, it will have plenty items to fit every budget from a drumhead signed by a whole slew of famous music artists (Michael Jackson, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springstein, and far too many others to list) to a treasure trove of miscellaneous items donated by aspiring author Lauren Hawkeye. And that’s not all. For those who are aspiring to become a novelist or to advance their writing career, there will be AMAZING opportunities. Many of the most powerful agents and editors in the business have donated evaluations—some with the promise of a 24-hour response (which is unheard of in the publishing industry).

How does it all work? Just like E-Bay, except this auction runs at www.brendanovak.com and only through the month of May (May 1 – May 31st). Visit that URL to register. When the bidding is over, you can pay with Paypal, credit card or personal check/money order. In most instances the donor even picks up the shipping. And the person who places the highest number of bids over all, even if that person doesn’t win a single item, will receive a fabulous prize package including a brand new camcorder (worth over $1,000), Your Name in My Next Book, an autographed copy of TRUST ME, and chocolate (lots of chocolate!).

Check out the auction, and while you’re at my Web site, enter to win a spectacular trip to Port Orchard and Bainbridge Island (sponsored by Allison Brennan, Debbie Macomber, Susan Wiggs and myself), and receive a $10 gift certificate you can use toward your auction purchases. Here’s to making a difference!

Have you ever wanted to fight back? How did you do it? Do you have any questions about the auction? What cool items have you won in past charity auctions? Do you prefer on-line shopping to brick & mortar shopping? Do you think this “wave of the future” will eventually overtake traditional fundraising? I’ll be giving away an ARC from TRUST ME to one lucky blogger today!

Welcome Brenda!! Folks, Brenda Novak is one of my all-time favorite people and a definite goddess extraordinaire. I don’t know where she finds hours in the day to be a mom, fabulous author and crusader. I am humbled by her.

But tribute aside :-), Brenda tell us about your new trilogy - TRUST ME, STOP ME and WATCH ME!

  2. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:09 am #

Thanks! I’m glad to be here! Here’s some tidbits about the upcoming books.

In TRUST ME, Skye Kellerman was attacked in her own bed. She managed to fend off her knife-wielding assailant, but now her would-be rapist is getting out of prison. Early. And Skye knows that Dr. Oliver Burke hasn’t forgotten what her testimony cost him.

In STOP ME, widower Romain Fornier lost his reason for living the day his daughter was kidnapped and murdered. When the killer got off on a technicality, he used a gun to mete out his own justice. Now that he’s out of prison and free to return to his Cajun roots, the last thing he wants to learn is that he might’ve killed the wrong man. But that’s exactly what Jasmine Stratford of The Last Stand has come all the way from California to tell him.

  3. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:10 am #

    Cont…

In WATCH ME, Sheridan Kohl was just a teenager parked at the lake with a boy named Jason when a stranger wearing a ski mask shot them both. Sheridan lived, but Jason died—and the stranger was never caught. Twelve years later, Sheridan has learned a thing or two about investigating crime. She returns to her hometown, intent on achieving answers at last. But someone doesn’t want the truth to come out. Someone who is willing to resort to murder. Again.

  4. Margaret on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:00 am #

Welcome, Brenda. Wow! 5 kids and you manage to do other worthwhile things in life? I think I need to go back to bed now. Just the idea has worn me out.

What wonderful thing you do with your auction. It sounds orangized as all get out. I’m definitely checking it out and seeing where I can put a bit of money. I just wish I had more to spend on the project. My doc tells me I’m a “borderline” diabetic. Whatever that means. But the disease has touched a couple of people in my family and I watched them struggle with it way back in the days when it was almost a death certificate.

Congratulations on all that you are doing and for your writing talents.

    Margaret in rainy, cold PA

  5. Karen Hawkins on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:50 am #

Welcome, Brenda! It’s awesome having you here! I can’t wait for TRUST ME to come out!

I am becoming a romantic suspense junkie, thanks to our own Karen Rose, who TOTALLY turned me onto the genre.

I am looking forward to the auction, too. I know you’re teaching your children a lot about public action and personal responsibility as you do the huge amount of work for this auction every year and I applaud you. I’m going to send the link for the auction to my family and encourage them to shop. You’re a true heroine!

I do have a question for you — as a writer with a huge and busy family AND your charity work, how do you find the time to write? Do you block off so many hours a day or write here and there or what? You must be Queen Organizationia!

  6. Ellen on 28 Apr 2008 at 7:28 am #

Wow. I love a great success story. Brenda you Inspire me.

There have been many causes that I have hitched my wagon to…and trust me, Brenda…I have a very sizable wagon! I guess I am most passionate about educational programs for our children. In some school districts, there are hundreds of talented and bright children who are not offered any programs to enhance their learning experience. I raise money for these programs and get the joy of watching these kids thrive.

I could only have one child due to bad gestational diabetes, so I open my heart to the children of others.

I can’t wait to visit your auction. Any FROS on the block?

  7. Ellen on 28 Apr 2008 at 7:34 am #

Goody. Now I don’t have to stand on line at the book store scratching my arm like a junkie waiting for the next tale of murder and suspense from our Miz Rose. If she says your work is good, then you have now entered my “must read” list. I’ll pick up some of your books on May 14th…the day after I pick up “Scream for me,” and stay up all night reading it.

  8. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 7:58 am #

Aw, Ellen - you’re so sweet! I hope you stay up all night and when you finally get to sleep the nightmares are creepy. It’s the least I can do for you!

Brenda’s DEAD RIGHT (last year’s trilogy) was so poignantly written, it has lingered with me ever since. I can’t WAIT for Trust Me! I’m not eligible for the ARC win, (whine).

  9. Kim on 28 Apr 2008 at 8:21 am #

Well, since everyone is whining about the wait for Trust Me, I’ve already read it and its amazing! I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Excellent job, Brenda!

Hi Brenda!! I’m so glad you’re joining us on Mt Oly today! YAY!

Everyone make sure to check out the auction. The Goddesses have donated a lovely basket for you to SPOIL YOUR INNER GODDESS! Its full of signed Goddess books, goodies and gift cards!

AND check out my donation, its a basket of MY FAVORITE THINGS, over 30 of my favorite books all signed by the authors, chocolate and my favorite movie!

    Bid often and Bid HIGH!

  10. Sabrina Jeffries on 28 Apr 2008 at 8:36 am #

Brenda, it’s great to have you here!! I’ve often thought about doing some sort of auction for autism, but I just don’t have the energy for it. That’s why I’m always so happy to participate in YOURS!! Donating stuff takes a lot less energy and time.

Thank God there are people like you willing to donate so generously. I feel like a slug every time I see how much you do!!

And the new books sound great, too. Can’t wait to read them!

  11. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 8:47 am #

You’ve read TRUST ME? Whine. Whine. You taunt me, evil Handmaiden Kim.

Seriously, folks, go to the auction - there are wonderful things to be found. Last year I was outbid on a fab Coach purse. This year …

  12. Kay on 28 Apr 2008 at 8:53 am #

    Welcome, Brenda.

How wonderful of you to do your auction. May is going to be a busy month for me. DH will think I’m writing constantly–but I’ll be checking my bids!

More terrific romance to read. My TBR pile just shot skyward. Like Ellen, if KarenR says to read it, I know I will enjoy it. I also know not to get it at the library, because I’ll want to REREAD it! LOL

Off to the bookstore I go, right after I take my new, adorable sheltie (Brodie a 2 yr old rescued dog) to the vet to get a check up and get chipped.

  13. doglady on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:00 am #

Hello, Brenda! Love your books! You and Karen are the reasons I sleep with a machete by my bed!

Your cause has become near and dear to my heart as my dear CP, Erin McClune, has Type 1 diabetes. I didn’t know much about it until she and I became friends. Now I am a big advocate for research! I will definitely check out the auction. And I believe our Golden Heart class is offering critiques as one of the items.

I too would like to know how you fit writing into all you do. I have trouble fitting it in around my DDJ (dreaded day job) and the work of maintaining five acres of land and a group of rescued dogs.

My effort to take a stand included getting a law passed to make animal cruelty a felony in Alabama. Now we are going after the dog fighters. I got my nickname, doglady, from a judge in a case in which I testified. I work with dogs with “mental” problems and I have testified against a number of dog fighters. I haven’t had to do it in a while and I hope that means we are winning!

  14. Karen Hawkins on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:03 am #

I say we vote Kim off the Mount for Excessive Teasing! How COULD she be so EEEVIL?

  15. Gannon on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:04 am #

    Welcome, Brenda.

I will definitely be checking out your auction. I’m a big advocate of fundraising for any worthy cause. Congratulations on all of your success.

Online shopping is awesome. Although I still sometimes go on the occasional “traditional” shopping trip, I prefer to do my shopping online. No matter where I am, I have access to all sorts of goodies!

  16. Nicole Jordan on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:09 am #

Welcome to Mt. Oly, Brenda! Your efforts are just amazing. I’m in total awe.

And like KarenH, I would LOVE to know how you manage to raise 5 kids, have a wildly successful writing career, and sponsor this fab auction every year.

Oh, and your new trilogy sounds great! Can’t wait to read them!

  17. Nicole Jordan on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:12 am #

    >>>>I say we vote Kim off the Mount for Excessive Teasing! How COULD she be so EEEVIL?

Naw, we would be in a world of hurt if we lost Handmaiden Kim. She’s the one who keeps Mt. Oly in great shape. But some particular form of torture might be in order. *G*

  18. Kay on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:13 am #

Doglady, good for you. The dogs in Alabama are so lucky to have you for and advocate.
Our dog rescue group here has a spring picnic and traditional auction.

I am doing a “traditional” auction in July to benefit a camp for kids adopted from Korea. The camp is held at a scout facility, with all of the regular camp activities, along with Korean language, culture, folktales and food. The kitchen will be co-managed by me and another parent. We feed about 300 people for lunch!

Maybe I’ll find out how to make part of the auction “virtual” for next year.

  19. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:14 am #

KarenH, we’re a bad influence on Kim. I hear she used to be sweet. Now she’s an evil gloater.

Doglady - I’ve wondered where your nickname came from. I assumed it came from your love of rescue animals, but this is better still. What a great story! I’m so proud of you.

Kay, congrats on Brodie! I’ve seen pics and he’s a cutie!

  20. Gannon on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:14 am #

Karen H, Kim has is the queen of excessive teasing! But we still love her! :)

  21. SuzyQ on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:33 am #

Hi Brenda and welcome to Mt. Oly! I applaud you for your charity auction and for finding the time to do it. It must be crazy being a mom of 5 and an author! I will definitely check out the auction after I post here.

As for the online shopping, I did most of my Christmas shopping that way last year. I was so busy and it was just convenient for me to have it delivered to my door - plus I had a lot of online coupons and free shipping!

  22. Julia London on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:47 am #

Hi Brenda, and welcome to Mt. Oly!

I have been in awe of your ability to organize and raise so much money for juvenile diabetes. Its really inspiring–it seems like it could be a full time job in and of itself, so the fact that you do it with a huge family and a busy career is really commendable.

I am also in awe of the fact you’ve had five kids and are so slim!

As for me, I have discovered I am just as good at shopping online as I am bricks and mortar, LOL

  23. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:56 am #

    Hi Margaret–

Like everyone else, I’m just doing what I can, but thanks for the compliment. I wasn’t up to much this past weekend. With prom night on Friday and my oldest daughter traveling to Germany on Sunday (we had to have her at the airport by 4:30 a.m. so we just stayed up all night helping her pack, etc.), I was one tired puppy yesterday. LOL

This is the opening week for the auction, though, so no more naps. I’ve got to kick it in gear. I’m so glad you’re willing to check out the auction. It doesn’t take a lot of money to contribute. It just takes everyone doing something small–telling a friend about it, placing a few bids, donating an item to put up for auction…anything. Together, it makes a huge impact.

Good luck controlling those blood sugars and thanks for joining us!

    Brenda

  24. SuzyQ on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:58 am #

Wow, Brenda you have a lot of nice items up for auction. I think we all know which one LisaH will bid on!

  25. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:01 am #

    Hi Karen–

Thanks so much for your contribution to the auction. Karen donated a fabulous Lap of Luxury basket (go to the auction to check it out later today, after I’ve had a chance to list it).

My kids have been really supportive. The time I spend on the auction is a sacrifice for them, too, but they get as excited as I do when a new donation comes rolling in, or we get more people to register and participate. This year I feel very blessed that Writer’s Digest donated their ad space (a full page!). Publisher’s Weekly did the same. And Woman’s World advertised the giveaway I’m doing with Allison Brennan, Susan Wiggs and Debbie Macomber (something we came up with as a promotional tool).

You asked how I find time to write. That’s not easy. I have four months to write each book, with back to back deadlines, so I have to keep myself going or I’ll fall quickly behind. I wouldn’t say I’m the most organized person in the world…

  26. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:03 am #

…but I am driven (and basically a pleaser–LOL) so I make a concerted effort each day to turn out a few pages. I treat it like a job. I get the kids off to school and hit my office, where I handle the “business” generated by e-mail (which has become a bit of an addiction). Then I turn to writing, with a goal of writing 10 pages a day. I don’t always get that many done (actually, most often I don’t! LOL), but that the goal I push toward each day.

    What’s your writing day like?

    Brenda

  27. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:09 am #

    Hi Ellen–

Thanks for joining us. Sounds like you do wonderful work for the schools. I’m glad to hear it. There are so many worthy causes. :-) Thanks for visiting the auction and adding it to your impressive list. And, I’m sorry, but I don’t know what FROS is??? (It’s probably something very obvious and I’m going to feel like an idiot when I hear it! LOL)

I’m glad you’ll also be checking out my work, Ellen. Karen is a master–I love her books, so we both in good company. I’ll be lining up to get SCREAM FOR ME on May 14th, too. It’ll be my birthday present (my birthday is the following day). LOL

I have $1.00 off coupons for any of the books in my new series (they’re coming out back to back). Just e-mail me your address, and I’ll mail you a few.

    Brenda

  28. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:10 am #

I have writing spurts. I’ll go for weeks at a time, then take down time to relax my carpal tunnel (yikes) and catch up on all the things that piled up while I was in my cave.

I like your way better, Brenda. I wish I could do that!

  29. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:11 am #

    Hi Kay–

The DEAD trilogy is still available (DEAD SILENCE, DEAD GIVEAWAY and DEAD RIGHT). TRUST ME, the new book, won’t be out until May 27th, but then I’ll have two books following right after (STOP ME and WATCH ME). As I told Ellen, if you’d like to save a few bucks, e-mail me your address and I’ll send you a few $1.00 off coupons. The coupon is good for any of the three books (but not the DEAD trilogy, unfortunately).

    Good luck with Brodie!

    Brenda

  30. Claudia Dain on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:12 am #

Brenda, if you can’t say you’re the most organized person in the world, I’ll say if for you: YOU ARE! *G* The four month timeline would drive me over the edge all by itself, never mind everything else.

Treating writing like a job…huh. I wonder if I should try that?

  31. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:12 am #

Brenda, FROS is the Sunday eye candy feature sponsored by Karen H! Every Sunday we wake up to a new charmingly handsome face and if we’re lucky a bit more below the face.

It stands for For Refreshment Only Sunday. LOL. So our lovely goddess blogger is asking if you intend to auction off any hunky guys.

Are you???? :-) You have some pretty amazing stuff on the auction site. Handsome guys may be a bit out of scope, though.

  32. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:14 am #

Thanks, Kim. I’m so glad you enjoyed TRUST ME. :-) That’s wonderful to hear.

Kim has put together a great basket for the auction, as she mentioned. Lots of fabulous, autographed books and other goodies. The Goddesses have also made a terrific donation. I’m very touched (and humbled) by the generosity I’ve encountered. The world is GOOD!!

    Brenda

  33. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:14 am #

Claudia, her house is clean and she’s a great cook. She exercises too. Every day. Grrrr….

If I didn’t love her I would hate her :-)

  34. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:15 am #

There’re are more Coach items, Karen. And some Isabelle Fiore, too! Anna DeStefano really knows her designer handbags. She does a whole category for the auction every year, bless her heart!

    Brenda

  35. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:18 am #

I’m not so sure my way is better, Karen. If you can throw yourself completely into a book and shut out the e-mail and “business” stuff, I applaud you. I’ve been letting myself get WAY too distracted, trying so hard not to fall behind on ANYTHING. LOL

    Brenda

  36. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:20 am #

I’ve tried to talk Ted into auctioning himself off (I think he’s pretty cute–LOL), but he’s too much of a workaholic to take time to pose with his shirt off.

    ;-)

    Brenda

  37. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:20 am #

But now I know to check out the blog on Sunday. Sounds like I’m in for a treat!

  38. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:22 am #

LOL Don’t listen to Karen. She’s being VERY generous. My house is not particularly clean but we did love having her as a house guest. She could go back into the bedroom and turn out 30 pages in a heartbeat. Talk about making me jealous! LOL

  39. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:23 am #

Sabrina, you’re far from a slug. And I think folks would rather keep you writing. That’s a service all in itself.

I’ll make you a deal, though. We find a cure for diabetes, and then I’ll turn the auction sites on autism. :-)

  40. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:27 am #

Wow, Doglady! Sounds like you are doing some terrific work. Good job!

I’m not sure I could write around a regular day job. My hat goes off to you and others who have to juggle the two. The auction has become a real time drain (although it’s a labor of love) but at least I can do it at home while I’m at my computer and turning out a few pages. If I had to give everything to one, and then try to do the other, I’d be too emotionally drained. So give yourself a big pat on the back! (And managing five acres? I’m having trouble with two! LOL)

So glad you’ll be participating in the auction. The 2008 GH class has donated three critiques (each critique will be read by five finalists). I’m excited about the donation and eager to see how they do.

  41. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:28 am #

LOL Claudia. I know four months doesn’t sound very long, but what’s that cliche? You can eat an elephant one bite at a time? I break it down into days–doing a little each day–and am amazed to have a finished book when the time is up.

Speaking of which, I have a book due this week. Yikes! I still have about 50 pages to write….

  42. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:29 am #

    Hi Kay–

I’m happy to donate some autographed books to your July fundraiser if you think they’d be a good item.

  43. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:29 am #

    What does LisaH want, SuzyQ?

  44. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:33 am #

    Gannon–

My daughter is like you. You wouldn’t believe the unique and wonderful items she finds on-line. She likes it better because it enables her to find and wear items that aren’t available in the traditional mall stores. (She wants to be a fashion designer, so she’s got a good eye for that sort of thing.)

I’m a bit resistant to change, which is why I asked the question. I prefer brick-and-mortar shopping and often worry that there are too many people out there with my own prejudice for the auction to continue to be successful. Fortunately, I’m beginning to believe I’m in the minority because I’ve been very impressed with the number of people who seem willing to support an on-line effort.

  45. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:36 am #

    Hi Julia–

Thanks for saying hello. It’s great to be here.

The auction has become a second full-time job. It’s grown so much that I had to hire an assistant for this year. I’ve also had a second helper, who’s donated a lot of time and effort to the cause. I’m eternally grateful to both of them (here’s a shout out to Anna Stewart and Lauren Hawkeye). Not only have they helped organize and load items and pictures, they’ve been donated some amazing items. Anna is creating the coolest miniature bookstore you’ve EVER seen. She’s calling it StarBOOKS. I know if you saw it, you’d all want it. And Lauren put together Lauren’s Treasure Trove, which has over 150 items! These people have been wonderful.

If the auction continues to grow as I hope and expect, I’ll need someone full time from January through June next year. I promote it year-round and gather items year-round, so that will be in addition to my own efforts.

  46. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:39 am #

    Hi Nicole–

Thanks for your note and the wonderful sentiment behind it. I appreciate the boost. And I’m so glad that you’re excited about the new books. I think they’re some of my best work…so we’ll see how my readers like them.

Do you live in Utah, by any chance? I’m pretty sure we did a signing together years ago.

  47. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:41 am #

If you register for the auction, I’ve got a coupon for you, too, SuzyQ! LOL Oh, and we have free shipping on almost every item. Can’t beat that, eh?

  48. SuzyQ on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:45 am #

Brenda - LisaH is a huge Johnny Depp fan, so I guessing she’d love that Pirates photo!

  49. Claudia Dain on 28 Apr 2008 at 10:59 am #

I’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with you, Brenda, on being a bricks and mortar shopper, nearly exclusively. I may be the only person left in the known galaxy who doesn’t shop on Amazon. I have to touch what I’m thinking of buying. Feel the fabric, try it on, walk around in the shoes, flip the pages of the book, etc, etc. Plus, with all the time I spend at home alone, writing, I like to have an excuse to get out of the house and interact with humanity.

  50. Paula on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:00 am #

Hi Brenda I haven’t read any of your books yet but after Karen R’s recommendation I’ll add them to my list. you are an amazing woman, I find it hard enough working part-time raisnig 2 boys and looking after children after school 4 nights a week, so how you do it I don’t know.

  51. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:17 am #

SuzyQ, I’m a huge fan of Johnny Depp, too. I was thrilled when this item came in. I hope LisaH does get this so that I’ll know it’s going to a good home. LOL

  52. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:18 am #

Paula, it sounds like you have your hands every bit as full as I do. Children take a ton of emotional energy (and sometimes physical energy). My children are getting older now (my youngest is 11), so it’s not nearly as hard as it once was. I remember the days of trying to type while nursing a baby. LOL

  53. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:20 am #

Claudia, I’m with you on wanting to touch everything. Plus, I’ve had such terrible luck. Whenever I’ve ordered something on-line, I’ve had to return it. But my daughter never has a problem. And with the items in the auction, you simply can’t go wrong. The authors and others who have contributed have really outdone themselves so I feel comfortable there.

Some folks here might be interested in the autographed quilts that will be up for auction. They’re handmade and signed by many popular authors, including Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Christina Dodd, Suzanne Brockmann, Linda Howard and others. :-)

    Welcome, Brenda!

As I’ve gotten busier, I’ve shifted from being a brick-and-mortar shopper to an on-line gal. How you get all your stuff done, wow! I have no idea. *g*

  55. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:34 am #

I think I’ll eventually be able to make that switch. My daughter thinks I’m crazy not to do more on-line. I’m just one of those people who is resistant to change. LOL

    Thanks for the welcome, Suzanne!

  56. cail on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:36 am #

welcome brenda! can’t really type much at the moment, but just wanted to say hi. i’ll stop back in later.

  57. Sheridan LA on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:39 am #

Congratulations to you on such an awesome endeavor, Brenda. I will definitely check out the auction. I try to pick a cause every year to raise money for - usually through some event (cycling, walking, etc) then we have events like casino night, silent auctions, etc.. it is awesome to see how many people are more then happy to donate items and money for these causes.

Shopping… I am a hybrid :D I shop brick and mortar for clothes, textiles, fitness, cycling, makeup, etc.. you can’t beat the service (I aim for local shops - not chains if it can be helped) but hit the net for unusual things I cannot find (ever notice how so many stores carry the same things?!?!?) and comparison shop for some of the bigger items or things I cannot get here. Books are both from Borders (chain, I know - but hard to find a local owned bookstore near me in LA) and amazon. I did just discover zappos.. which I think I might be half in love with… free shipping both ways..mmm lots-o-shoes!

  58. Kay on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:41 am #

    Brenda,

I’m back from the vet (the vet agrees–Brodie is perfect), and on my way to your website for the coupons. I guess I’ll have to work on another in my TBR pile in the meantime :-)

Thanks for suggesting the books. That will be great for the auction. I’ll give you my snail mail & email on you website.

  59. Paula on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:47 am #

I’m a bricks and mortar shopper but I also do some on-line (especially books). I like to be able to see(in person) what I’m buying but sometimes it is quicker to buy on line, especially if the shops are out of stock with some bits. I have also done my food shopping on line ( it is cheaper) but I don’t like the quality of the fruit and veg the ’shoppers’ pick out for me, so unless pushed for time I like to do that myself.

  60. Sheridan LA on 28 Apr 2008 at 11:48 am #

oh, man… I just looked at the auction items.. my bank account might take some hits. What COOL stuff!!!!!! I want to start bidding!!! :D

  61. Sheridan LA on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:05 pm #

oh.. and I placed a banner for your auction on my myspace page and will also put it on my website when I can tackle it this week.. my dad is a type 2 diabetic, so though not the exact thing, I am all for anything that helps that cause…

  62. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:11 pm #

    Hi Sheridan–

I’m glad you found plenty of items you like. LOL It’s my job to tempt you beyond your ability to refuse. :-)

My daughter has the same complaint about the brick and mortar stores–that they all carry the same thing and a very limited selection. She loves Zappos!

Thanks for posting the banner and for adding the information to your web page. I know Type 2 isn’t the exact same thing, but a cure will help everybody and that’s what we’re after so I’m glad you see it that way, too.

  63. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:12 pm #

    Thanks for the welcome, Cail!

And Kay, I’m glad to help. I’m waiting for new tote bags with The Last Stand logo. When they come in, I’ll sign a few books and send them along.

  64. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:13 pm #

Paula–I’ve never tried food but I should probably check it out because I can’t seem to find the time to go to the grocery store anymore. It’s interesting what on-line video places are doing to the usual brick and mortar outlets. My local Hollywood Videos is going out of business. :-(

Lots of changes going on (can you hear me wailing? LOL).

  65. KariE on 28 Apr 2008 at 12:31 pm #

    Hi Brenda!!
Looks like my TBR pile is going to be getting a few books taller. *happy sigh*

I prefer brick and mortar stores. There is nothing I hate more than getting something that isn’t just right. I like to put my hands on something that I am buying. But there are times that I buy the wrong thing even when I put my hands on it.

I’m on my way to check out the auction.

  66. Kim on 28 Apr 2008 at 1:11 pm #

    >>>>>>KarenH, we’re a bad influence on Kim. I hear she used to be sweet. Now she’s an evil gloater.

Yup, that’s right! The Goddesses have created an evil teasing monster ;)

Did I mention that Trust Me is awesome?

    *ducking and running*

  67. Paula on 28 Apr 2008 at 1:19 pm #

Kim have you heard the expression ‘what goes around comes around’? You are a big tease!

  68. Karen Hawkins on 28 Apr 2008 at 1:19 pm #

*** throwing and chasing **** Kim, how MEAN! (But cute! Always cute!)

Brenda, you have MUCH better concentration than I do. I can write two chapters in one day, but then I’m burnt out for a week. I have to go slow and steady and admire people who can write faster. And yes, Karen Rose sets standards none of us can ever aspire to. However she does it, it’s FANTASTIC.

I like brick and mortar stores sometimes, but they’re a luxury. Any more, it’s online or not at all. I’m just so busy! Still, when I go to the bookstore, it’s a two hour treat and luxuriate — and buy a lot, too. It’s funny, but I also take more chances in a bookstore than I do online. I think it’s because I can browse and physically connect with a book. Online shopping tends to ‘dull’ the package.

  69. Lisa H on 28 Apr 2008 at 1:32 pm #

Welcome Brenda—all you are doing makes me cry tears of joy. God Bless you for the help you are giving others. I am heading to your site. Someone mentioned my name in an earlier post, meaning you must have something featuring my one and only love, Mr. Johnny Depp. I will bid, and bid high, my dear!

I try to “fight back” by working with women in abusive relationships. I work closely with a few at a time offering support, encouragement and tools to escape or resolve the conflict. This is my life work and I love the women I spend time with.

I love our handmaiden Kim, but agree she needs spanking—I say let her choose a FRO’s and we’ll give him a paddle!

  70. Sabrina Jeffries on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:23 pm #

What kind of punishment is that, Lisa H? Hey, I’ll volunteer for THAT punishment.

And kudos to all of you who work with a charity. It’s SO important.

  71. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:26 pm #

Thanks, KariE. I’m so happy you’re going to check out the auction and my books.

One time I bought all of my Christmas presents (for my immediate family) on-line. They all looked great in the magazine–but I ended up having to return everything. LOL I never did get a credit for the watch I returned. That made me a little less likely to become a big Internet or magazine shopper.

  72. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:26 pm #

LOL Punish KIM? Why on earth would we want to do that? As far as I’m concerned, she can say TRUST ME is great as many times as she wants. LOL

  73. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:29 pm #

That’s true, Karen, which makes certain things on the auction bring in much less than they would if folks could see and handle them. Anna’s miniature bookstore is that way. It’s absolutely fantastic–so fantastic that the pictures don’t do it justice. Or the quilt. Last year, I got a great deal on a quilt autographed by over 40 NYTimes Bestselling authors, which I gave to my editor as the perfect birthday present, for much less than it would’ve gone for in any other forum. It’s because people couldn’t tell by the pictures just how beautiful it was. I hope that word has gotten out because we have some amazing quilts for this year–three from Icia and one from Author Anne Stuart.

  74. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:33 pm #

    Hi LisaH–

What a nice note. Thank you. I know about that kind of tears. I was recently embarrased because Stephanie from RT was interviewing me for an article on the auction (it’s out in the June issue along with a prequal I wrote for my new series–has anyone seen it?). Anyway, she asked me a question (can’t even remember what it was) and I broke down in tears. I think that surprised her. It definitely surprised me! It’s just one of those things that’s very dear to my heart so it makes me emotional sometimes.

I’m glad Johnny will be finding himself a great home. I love him, too!!! I’m also excited about the drum head and drum sticks signed by Micheal Jackson, Beyonce, Ringo Starr, Bruce Sprinstein and so many others. It’s amazing the number of autographs on that thing–and of such famous people!

Your work with abused women sounds so rewarding (and vital). Good for you! The heroines in my new series The Last Stand take on a few cases like that.

  75. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 2:41 pm #

I second the chastisement of Kim. But not in a fun way. No FROS for her.

  76. Allison Brennan on 28 Apr 2008 at 5:46 pm #

Wait, wait, stop the presses. The miniature bookstore is mine. Yeah, I know, I plan to pay dearly for it, but it’s mine, all mine . . . oh, sorry, this is a public blog, right?

Brenda’s upcoming trilogy is fantastic. I was lucky enough to read one of books early (hee hee, sorry, Karen) and Brenda really outdid herself. She’s a fabulous storyteller and this trilogy is so, so, so good.

And as both a donor AND buyer of auction items, I spent Saturday night going through and marking the items I plan on bidding on. Including, of course, the bookstore which is going to look FABULOUS in my new office. I already have a place for it . . . .

  77. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 5:51 pm #

I saw another bookstore made by I think the same woman - it is truly incredible. If you’re into miniatures - check it out and give Allison a run for her money! It’s all for a good cause!

Okay, Allison, that was a lame attempt at payback seeing as how you have read one of the trilogy and taunt me a second time. Pffffft.

  78. Lorena on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:05 pm #

Brenda, I don’t care how modest you’re being about your organizational skills … I don’t know how you do it–I only juggle a cat (granted, he’s bigger than many small children, and acts like a three-year-old), a day job, and enough brainless moments to practically ensure I’ll never get a publishable novel actually done. Probably would help if I didn’t rush out day-of to pick up whatever KarenR or Allison is going to keep me awake all night with … the next trilogy sounds amazing. Umm…yours, I mean. Seeing as I’m waiting impatiently for the next in ongoing from the other two …

I read recently that online auctions are becoming a trend — even if there’s an on-the-ground event to go with them, because they’re so successful at reaching people. The power of modern technology, so to speak. I’ll admit, though, to being in the brick-and-mortar crowd for shopping. But I can suck it up for a good cause. LOL

Off to check out auction things ….

  79. Lorena on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:12 pm #

Or not … (pout) … the page isn’t coming up. I’ll try again later.

  80. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:16 pm #

LOL Allison. I told Anna (the creator) that you’ll no doubt win. You’re probably making a lot more per book than I am. LOL (And I do think it would go nice in a brand new office, which is what you’ll have….)

Allison has donated some of her fabulous books to the auction. She’s also participating in a 10-month mentoring package with the other Fog City Divas (a group blog like the Goddesses here). And Karen has donated a critique and two autographed libraries of her books. Have I got good friends or what??? These items are not to be missed.

Every one has been very generous!! THANK YOU!!

    Brenda

  81. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:18 pm #

That’s weird, Lorena. You should have no trouble getting to it. It’s never been down before (that I know of). Let me know if you continue to have trouble, okay?

And thanks for making an on-line exception. I think you’ll be glad you did. A lot of these items you can’t get in any brick and mortar store. :-)

By the way, I love cats, although we’re now considering a dog. There’s a place in Concord that trains dogs to smell when a diabetic is going low. I figured that might help me sleep easier at night. And since Thad has been begging for a dog for some time…this might be the perfect solution! Although I already feel sorry for my poor cat. LOL

  82. Brenda Novak on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:21 pm #

I forgot to mention for those who don’t know that Allison does almost all her writing at Starbucks. So you can see why a miniature bookstore featuring her books and those of her friends called StarBOOKS might be very appropriate. :-)

  83. Sheridan LA on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:36 pm #

must. stop. looking. at. auction. items.

I am going to have to shortlist things so I don’t bid on everything there… impressive job with the items, Brenda… you should make a ton for your campaign this year. Brava!!

  84. Lisa H on 28 Apr 2008 at 6:54 pm #

Brenda, I hope I can win that print…although I will have to take the glass off and run my fingers over his sharpie curve…no that’s not a euphanism!

And I have lovely photos of our Captain Jack…many, many beautiful photos that flash on my computer screen…I’d be happy to send you some!

I love Handmaiden Kim too much to see her paddled by anyone but a FRO’s. Sorry Sabrina!

SuzyQ - Thank you for thinking of me. Who makes your blood run hot?

  85. Kim on 28 Apr 2008 at 7:23 pm #

awww, Lisa, I knew you were a good egg! C’mon over here and have some cookies and brownies *g*

  86. cail on 28 Apr 2008 at 7:28 pm #

ok… back. this auction looks great… i’m excited!

i’m a big fan of ebay, to be honest. nothing quite like buying something you need for cheep when the income isn’t coming in so fast.

also, i hate to admit i haven’t read your books, but will add them to my TBB list!

  87. Lisa H on 28 Apr 2008 at 8:40 pm #

Kim, I’ll eat cookies and brownies with you any day…and then you can tell me all about Brenda’s new book!

  88. Karen Rose on 28 Apr 2008 at 9:16 pm #

Many thanks to Brenda for being our guest today!!

  89. Brenda Novak on 29 Apr 2008 at 1:00 pm #

LOL Sheridan! I don’t think anyone is as hooked on that as I am. I keep going over every item. I’m very excited.

Lisa H–I hope you get that print. :-) Johnny is one fine man. And I’d take up your offer for the screensaver except I have screensavers that mean even more to me than Johnny–my kids. LOL

Cail–Glad you’ll give the auction and my books a try. I hope you really enjoy both!

Karen–Thanks so much for being such an excellent hostess. You’re amazing, my friend!
