What’s Your Stomping Ground?
Apr 1st 2008
Nicole JordanMy Life As A Plebe
As an Army Brat, I lived a lot of places when I was growing up – six states plus two different cities in
Europe.
And as an adult I lived in five more states (and several locations in two of those.)
People sometimes pity me for having moved so much, but truthfully, I enjoyed it since I got to make new life-long friends and see great places and get a fresh start every so often. Although I confess, now that I am (ahem) a bit older and more staid in my ways, I’m glad to be settled (hopefully!) in one place for a while.
My fave places to live? I loved Atlanta because of the greenery and humidity (yes, I relish humidity because of what it does for my skin) and because many of my best friends are there. I also loved living in Cincinnati because
it had four seasons, great equestrian options, and fun cultural stuff. And San Francisco for the great weather and fab sights to see.
As for visiting places, I’ve played tourist a lot in the U.S. But I haven’t seen even a fraction of what I’d like to see.. And I want to know what I’ve missed by having lived and visited so few places in my life *grin*. So please tell me, Goddesses:
- Where do you live now?
- Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else?
- Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant?
- What’s the best thing about your location? The worst?
- What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground?
- And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? (Be careful what you answer ’cause you never know who might show up on your doorstep when you least expect it!)

Hi Nic,
What two European cities did you live in? I have some cousins that live in Germany and Holland and I’ve always thought it would have been cool to live in Europe.
1. NYC
2. Yes. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
3. Born and bred. Never lived anywhere else.
4. There’s always something to do and there’s something for everyone. The worst thing is the crowdiness and loudness.
5. There are many great museums and Broadway shows to see. Also, the shopping is amazing in NY.
6. I live in a very small apartment, so the goddesses are going to have to visit me one or two at a time and might have to sleep on the floor or couch.

Hi Nicole,
In my younger days I was very fiddle-footed. My sister and I would joke that we only lived in a town long enough to exhaust the local library, then we’d move on.
1. Eugene, Oregon
2. I am now but I sometimes miss Los Angeles
3. I’ve been here 16 years. I came to visit my family and stayed.
4. The scenery is incredible, I can take pictures of the skies and rivers all day long.
5. We are less than a hour from the coast and 2 hours from Portland. The cultural aspects are expanding all the time. We have The Bach Festival every year and the Asian Festival. Fairy World is at one of the local vinyards. And we have great Goodwills, no apology, I LOVE Goodwill.
6. Bring it Goddesses! We can have a giant sleepover! We always have room for more at our table.

1. Lancaster Country, PA
2. I love it here. 4 seasons so a new one comes along when I’m tired of the old.
3. I’m a transplant from TX but have lived here 32 years. Almost as long as I lived in TX.
4. The history. Gettysburg is not far away. You can actually feel that awful battle when you stand quietly in the field. Lancaster is over 250+ years old. I love history.
5. Seeing the Amish, I suppose. Shopping at the outlets. Visiting The Cloisters which was an off-beat group of religious. We’d probably call it a cull these days.
6. I would love any/all of you as houseguests. Unfotunately, I live in a 2 BR mobile home. 1 BR is a sewing/craft room. I have a Full sized mattress. I don’t even own a couch. Can you sleep in a Lazy Boy? Claudia can come clean. I’d like that a lot!

1. El Dorado, Arkansas (that’s a long ‘a’ in El Dorado, please. Do not confuse us with the city of gold…unless you’re looking for black gold, then you’re in the right place)
2. I would never move unless for whatever reason my family packs up and leaves. Husband and I both are from here.
3. Been here for about 23 years now, I think.
4. It’s not too crowded, large cities are within a couple of hours. But, it’s an industrail area, so within 10 minutes from my home there’s an oil refinery (and no our gas is not cheaper) and a chemical plant. all their gas emmissions make for bad air but pretty sunsets!
5. I would say not too much, but visitors to our area always comment on the trees/scenery and our town square. *shruggs* most of our trees are pine, so it’s not like they turn all pretty in the fall. They spent enough money on our square, I suppose it should look good.
6. Come on in. But be aware, I live in a single-wide! We’ll be throwing pallets down on the floor!

Heck, evlqn, there is absolutely nothing wrong with shopping at Goodwill or the Salvation Army. One of my granddaughters was wearing a fabulous skirt yesterday to work that she picked up for $5 at the SA. We also have The Water Streeet Rescue Mission where you can find some neat household items on occasion. And books at all 3 places.
My oldest grandson hardly shops anywhere else. Altho now he is married and has a son of his own, he may shop a bit more upscale. Not much. They are throw backs to the hippie era.
Do any of you belong to FreeCycle? It’s absolutely amazing what people want to give away. I got rid of my queen-sized bed frame in just a day. And I had 3 people wanting it! It’s part of my fun reading every day.

I live in FL and really love it here. I’m a recent transplant - you rarely meet someone who was born here and they are usually quite proud of themselves. “I am a native Floridian,” they’ll say.
I suppose I miss the seasons, but I have a lovely scene of a lake with autumn trees for my computer screen, so I’m good. When I look out my back yard, it’s even lovelier - like a jungle.
If you came to see me, you’d find me on the computer, alas. I do get to the beach occasionally, but not this time of year. Spring break, shudder. Too many people, too many cars.

1. Ashville, OH (30 min south of Columbus)
2. I would rather be living closer to work. I have to drive 45 min to work everyday.
3. I’ve only been living in Ashville for 8 months but I’ve lived in the Columbus area for 22 years.
4. The best part of where I live is that the rent is cheap. The worst is that it’s so far away from everything.
5. Nothing in Ashville…but there’s lots of fun things to do in Columbus.
6. I’d love to have any of the Goddesses visit me! No one ever visits.

1. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
2. I like it here, but sometimes dream of living else where. Maybe Idaho or Wyoming.
3. Yes. I was born and raised here, and then spent some time away in other towns in Wisconsin. Then I came home about 5 years ago.
4.The Dells is a small town tourist destination so we have all the amenities of a big city, but the feel of small town living. The worst part is that in the summer we have big city traffic and small town roads.
5.Waterparks, Amusement Parks, tours on the river, spas, shopping, bar hopping and karioke.
6. Y’all come. I have a big house and currently all the bedrooms are filled, but I have plenty of floor space, and with your stay you receive free as much dog hair as your clothes can carry, along with a demonstration of how well a Dyson picks up what you leave behind. Also while you enjoy your stay on my floor you may also receive a free snuggle partner in either the form of a dog or cat. All this and my company as well. What a deal!

Where do you live now? Winnipeg Manitoba Canada
Are you glad? I adore this city and wouldn’t live anywhere else.
Are you a long-time resident? Yes
What’s the best thing about your location? The worst? The best are the summers and the people - very friendly. The worst are the winters - bitterly cold.
What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? My province is diverse. Up north we can go on a Tundra tour and watch the Polar Bears. As well, you can swim with beluga whales. In the central part there is a provincial park that actually has a desert. Summer & winter festivals all over.
And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? I’d love some goddess house guests! In summer, we can laze by the pool or enjoy the hot tub. We could watch a movie under the stars. Have a spa day or any of the above mentioned activities.

1. Sayreville, New Jersey. Central Jersey, Home of Jon BonJovi, 40 minutes away from downtown NYC.
2. I had lived in Marbella, Spain for almost 12 years and I still had to travel back home at least 2 times a year because I missed it.
3. I have lived here since I was 11 years old. My Dad was an Engineer for Sunshine Biscuits Co. when the factory moved from New York to Sayreville.
4. The best thing is that it close to New York City ( 30 mins. in the train)and Philadelphia (1 hour driving).
5. We have great shopping. Lots of Malls.
6. Yahoo! Pajama Party time with the Goddesses. Inflate the beds.

# Where do you live now? Minnesota
# Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? The winter is REALLY LONG! But I love the sunshine. Even though spring and fall are supposed to be short I need the four seasons. Lived in SC for a few years and really missed fall.
# Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? I am a recent transplant. Born and raised in Michigan. We moved here in October 07
# What’s the best thing about your location? The worst?I love the sunshine and the openess. I am on the east side of the plains. I would say the worst is that everything is at least 30 minutes away.
# What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? I could drive you into Minneapolis to the Mall of America. Which I must say is very impressive. If you didn’t want the long drive our animals could be offered as entertainment. We have sheep, goats, and chickens. We will be acquiring some pigs in about a month.
Kate on 02 Apr 2008 at 7:57 am #
Any Goddess would be more than welcome to come stay. Of course you could run the risk of being put to work on the farm. We have a sleeper sofa so no floor sleeping for about 3 of you. I have an extra couch too. Drop by anytime…know that coming here can’t be an accident though cuz it’s just too far off any beaten track. LOL
Take care and thanks for the opportunity to share!

North Port, Florida
I really like it here. My house is not in town but it is close enought to everything I need. We have woods that surround us and every once in a while you might see a bobcat trot across the street. We ave a resident wild rabbit that my son has named Karen. There is also an alligator that has been known to bask in the sun next to WalMart.
I have lived in Florida for 10 years this September. I lived in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, then bought a house up here 8 years ago. Interesting point, my dh bought our house exactly 2 years to the day that I moved to Florida (before I had met my dh). I had lived in Michigan for the first 19 years of my life. I, too, miss the change of seasons.
I am not far from the beaches but not so close that I am effected to much by the spring breakers. The worst is that we have to drive at least an hour to get to a theme park.
KariE on 02 Apr 2008 at 8:24 am #
My house is always a mess (to my standards), but any of my goddess friends would be welcome in my home. I would love to have a conversation with a person that shares the same love of reading as I do. That and I would love to have the company of someone other than a male and/or a 4 year old.

Air Force brat here, Nicole! Like you I loved the travel, but I am happy to be settled now that I am a “mature” woman.
1. I live in the little town of Wetumpka, AL on the Coosa River. Movies like Big Fish and The Grass Harp have been filmed here.
2. I love it here. I have 5 acres in the middle of nowhere. They know my name at the post office and the bank. The UPS man brings parcels to the bakery because he knows that’s where I am during the day. Very “Mayberry” town.
3. I have owned this property since 93 but I have only lived here since 05.
4. Best thing - that small town atmosphere. We still have parades for every holiday. Close enough to Montgomery and Birmingham for entertainment, but far enough away to avoid the crime, the noise, the closed in feeling of suburbia. Worst thing - where I live there is no cable and no DSL internet!
5. Jasmine Hill Gardens is a huge formal garden complete with Greek statues and temples and amazing flowers. All of the Civil Rights sites in
doglady on 02 Apr 2008 at 8:34 am #
Montgomery. The church barbecues and camp stew sales. Christmas on the Coosa with the annual boat parade and Santa coming in on water skis at the end. The annual Rodeo pilgrimage with horses, riders, and carriages of all kinds coming down Hwy 231. The Hank Williams Museum. Tuskegee Institute is not far away - lots of history there.
6. Y’all come! I too live in a single wide, but I happen to know with couches, futons and floorspace approximately a dozen or so teenagers can sleep here so you ladies should have no problems at all.

Where do you live now? South Burlington, VT
Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? It’s OK but I would love to move back to Mississippi where some dear friends live.
Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? We moved here in ‘87.
What’s the best thing about your location? The worst? It’s very beautiful here, but the winters are too long.
What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? Skiiing, hiking, Lake Champlain, Ben and Jerrys Factory tours.
And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? Absolutely!! Just give me a little warning so I can have the house in order for you.
Lisa H on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:05 am #
I’ll answer the last question first:
I’d love all you goddesses to come visit me. I have a big house and whenever I have guests, we move furniture around to make room for them. I will feed you well, and we will laugh and laugh and laugh. You ladies all seem like family to me, and we have alot of discussing to do about FROs books and writing!
I extend this invitation to everyone, but know it won’t be a party unless Ellen shows up!
Sandy "Snik" White on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:09 am #
1. Lehigh Acres Fl is where I call home these days
2. There are many places that I would rather be than Florida, simply because of climate, economy however, I love my house, humble though it may be, its mine (well in 31 years anyway) and I am happy to raise my daughter in it.
3. I was born in MI, moved to FL for the first time when I was 7, then moved to GA when I was 12, MI when I was 13, FL when I was 18, IL when I was 20 and back to FL at 24 and here I am still.
4. The best thing about my location is how frequently people come to Florida for vacation…I get to see a lot of family that way. The worst thing? Hurricanes and tourists, not necessarily in that order.
5. The beaches and the museums.
6. TOTALLY! Any Goddess who finds herself in my neck of the woods is totally welcome. I think a family reunion is needed cause some of you are like long lost sisters!!

I just love hearing about where everyone lives! This is better than a hotline to a travel agency!
Nicole Jordan on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:25 am #
Wow, you goddesses rock! It’s so great to hear where everyone lives… and the warm invitations to come visit. I agree with Claudia, it’s better than a hotline to a travel agency. Plus it makes me understand y’all a little better, lol.
Jane, I spent 1-3rd grade in Augsburg near Munich, then again my junior year in high school. And my senior year I was in Wurtzburg. Wb had a high school reuinion in Vegas 7 years ago, and although I was too swamped to attend, I got to hear about a lot of friends and talk to some on the phone.
Doglady, I knew we were kindred spirits! The only thing is, the Air Force has way cooler bases than the Army does.
Julia London on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:27 am #
I know, this is fun! I had no idea we were so far-flung. I sort of picture everyone sitting in a living room somewhere.
1. I live in Texas! Austin, to be exact. I lived for 8 or 9 years in Washington, DC when I was a fed, but always wanted to come back.
2. I am glad because all of my family is in Texas. But around August, I start dreaming of other places to live.
3. I am a fourth-generation Texan. I was born and raised on a ranch in West Texas, but came to central texas for college and can’t imagine living up there now. Its harsh living there.
4. The best thing is that the weather is great for most of the year, so you can do anything. The worst thing is there are three unbearably hot months — July, August, and September.
5. Girlfriend, there is some night life in Austin! It touts itself as being the live music capital of the world. There are also the highland lakes for year round water sports, and some fabulous, uniquely-Austin shopping (keep Austin wierd)
Julia London on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:28 am #
6. Any goddess can come see me at any time. But if I had to pick and choose, I’d say Hawkins, as she always seems to be carrying a bottle around Mt. Oly. I like shiny, full bottles!
Nicole Jordan on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:30 am #
MarthaH, polar bears and whales?? What a cool sight that must be. Although I admit I’m so cold natured that I’d love to visit all these northern places in the summer, not winter.
My folks lived in Montgomery and Miami after I left home. I remember sitting by the pool in Miami on NY’s day in 70 degree weather. It was heaven.
Nicole Jordan on 02 Apr 2008 at 9:35 am #
Kari F, my dh is from SW Missouri and he loves the Ozarks.
And Julia, my sis was born in San Marcus. And I set a book in Austin so I had to read up on your stomping ground.
Elsie, what took you to Marbella, Spain?
I know the world is HUGE but still, it’s very small.

2. Yes, I like here and my whole family is here too.
3. Born and bred
4. Best thing is we have a little of everything. Close to NYC, the beaches, and the mountains. The worst - taxes!!!!
5. Oh we have malls galore!!! Plenty of shopping and I have to mention there is no tax on clothes or shoes!!!! (that’s about the only thing that isn’t taxed!)
6. The goddesses are always welcome at my house!! I love to entertain and there would be plenty of wine and chocolates for all!!!!!

1. I live in Montana
2. I’m thinking of moving 40 miles north where they actually have a Wal Mart.
3. I’m a bounce. I lived here, moved away, moved back.
4. Best: hiking. Worst: Forest Fire Season.
5. Camping.
6. I’d be glad to let any of you sleep on my floor, but it could take me a while to get the shotgun out of my husbands hands, so you might want to call ahead first.

Another Army Brat here - I took it one step further and became an Army Wife.
Spent most of my life back and forth between the Midwest and Germany. My freshman and sophmore year I went to Wuerzburg HS. 1969-1971, that’s way before you were there, I’m sure!!
Back to the fun:
1. We ended up living in Oklahoma (our last duty station).
2. I didn’t like it at first, but it has grown on me. We always wanted to retire in Puerto Rico (my husband is from there), but life had other plans. LOL
3. Transplant, thou we were stationed here when I was in grade school.
4. the best: the weather - the worst: the weather. The saying around here is: If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute! (I’m still not used to it.)
5. Sure! I’d love to meet any and/or all of you. You seem like really wonderful women.

Now: North Carolina
Glad: Love it
Native: No, long time transplant. DH and I actually chose to leave LA so we could raise our kids in a better, different environment. It was a great move and my kids had a wonderful childhood here.
Best/Worst: It’s gorgeous, just amazingly beautiful. Mild four season climate. Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, Outer Banks to the east, gently rolling hills in the middle. Pines, oaks, dogwoods everywhere. The worst would have to be the bugs. Big, fat, I-own-the-planet bugs.
Sights: Seeing the Biltmore estate in Asheville would be a must. It’s beyond description.
Guests: Of course! The only problem (for you, not for me) is that I don’t have a coffee pot. If you can get your caffeine fix from diet Snapple, we’re good to go.
Kay on 02 Apr 2008 at 10:58 am #
1. Minneapolis, MN!
2. WE LOVE IT HERE. DH has the job of his dreams & our kids enjoy the 4 seasons. There is always something fun to do, & often there are free family events. That said, I think DH & I will retire in Taos. We both love the mountains.
3. We moved here in ‘93.
4. Same answer–the 4 seasons. LOL I love snow, but snow on 3/31, well, it was getting old by then. It’s supposed to all melt today, & my early tulips are poking up in the south garden:-) I’ll get to play in dirt soon.
5. Depends on the time of year. We have a world class & free art institute, wonderful theaters, fantastic opera, a zoo w/ an indoor rain forest (great when winter gets to be too much) & more shopping than you can shake a VISA at. The MOA has a 5 acre amusement park & we are headed there w/ the kids this afternoon to take on the 2 new roller coasters!
6. Any of you, any time–really. We have had friends of friends stuck here at the airport due to weather (imagine that) –give us a call.

Where do you live now? Goshen, IN
Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? NO! I hate it here and plan on relocating when the kiddo graduates.
Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? *sigh* Life long.
What’s the best thing about your location? The worst? Best thing: both our families are here. Worst thing: both our families are here. *g*
What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? If you like football, I’m about 45 min away from Notre Dame and we have the Football Hall of Fame. There’s also lots of Amish shopping. Most importantly you’d enjoy ME! I’m loads of fun
And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? (Be careful what you answer ’cause you never know who might show up on your doorstep when you least expect it!) Wow, did I pick a great day to tear myself away from work and check out the Mt. or what… it’s so fun to see how spread out we all are!
1. Cold Springs, NV (20 minutes above Reno)
2. I am very much NOT glad. I moved from lush backwoods of CA… enough said.
3. Recent Transplant, we moved here about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Before this I have lived in the Sacramento area of CA, Way-Northern CA, & Bandon, OR.
4. Hmm, I guess the best would be the way the desert looks covered in snow. The Worst would have to be a combination of Wind and Desert (bad combo). Besides the fact that we have sagebrush instead of trees.
5. Drinking? Gambling? Skiing? Looking like a moviestar compared to the locals? Okay, seriously we have the Rib Cook-Off, Hot August Nights, Hot-Air Balloon Races, Air Races, Street Vibrations, Burning Man, etc. Lots of fun.
6. I would like anyone & everyone as a houseguest! I LOVE having visitors and we don’t nearly get enough… I always have wine on hand if that helps entice.

I currently live in Seattle, WA. I love it here. I moved here after I graduated from college. It’s far enough away from my parents that they can’t just pop by, but close enough for a visit. *G*
There is a ton to do here, it all depends on what you’re interested in. Pro Sports, horse racing, boating, hiking, shopping. The tulip festival just started, and that’s always fun. And, just for you Nicole, there are tons of equestrian events in the outlying areas. (my cousin’s daughter is a competitor). The worst would probably be the rain. It does rain. sometimes a lot. LOL
And I’d love for anyone to visit! I love showing people around and visiting places that I take for granted.

Bay Area - N. California
2. Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else?
I like it here but would prefer to live in San Diego. Love the beaches there.
3. Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant?
Lived here for 10 years now. Was in Arizona before that for a few years.
4. What’s the best thing about your location? The worst?

Worst thing - Too cold! It’s California. The water in the ocean is FREEEEEZING cold.
5. What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground?
Its the Bay Area - what isn’t there to do?

Ex-military wife here. Lived lots of different places in my day.
1. Where do you live now? Albany, NY area.
2. Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? The area is nice and it reminds me of KY somewhat. I dream of living by the coast of ME but I don’t see that happening anytime in this lifetime.
3. Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? Moved here in ‘91. It’s the longest I have ever lived anywhere.
4. What’s the best thing about your location? The worst? Albany is centrally located. I can reach NYC or Boston in a matter of hours. Worst is the winter weather.
5.What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? We could go to the Adirondacks or the Catskills. Lake George. Howes Caverns.
6. And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? YES!! I would love to meet any or all of the Goddesses!!

1. Where do you live now?
Chico, CA - 90 miles north of Sacramento
2. Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else?
I like it here. Came for college and stayed. Would love to live at the beach during July and August. Any temps over 105 are a drag. But it’s spring now and *everything* is blooming. Just ask my allergist!
3. Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant?
Lived here since Aug ‘80. Was in Central Calif before that. Grew up in the SF Bay area.
4. What’s the best thing about your location? The worst?
Chico State qualifies for both. It’s a beautiful campus and adds a lot to the community but then there are the students. Love ‘em and hate ‘em. ah well.
5. What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground?
Visit Chico State of course! Also Bidwell Park was used for some exterior filming of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Way before my time, but the big oaks are still standing. Sacramento is only 90 minutes away. Camping and hikin

1. Where do you live now? Culver City (Los Angeles) CA
2. Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? I actually love it here - shocking as I found that! Right now, i will stay - but you never know what lies down the road!
3. Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? Moved here 3.5 years ago. formerly from Texas, Colorado and Missouri.
4. What’s the best thing? The worst? Best thing is the diversity - pick an ethnicity and you can find food and shopping for it! Worst - no seasons. I miss seasons. (Traffic sucks everywhere)
5. What would we enjoy doing? Venice Beach for the oddballs, Chinatown for the shopping and food, Big Bear for mountain fun, the H-wood Bowl (one of the best and cheapest things to do in LA), Catalina Isl.
6. goddesses as house guests? Goddesses are welcome. I have a small apartment with a futon/ couch and can get an air mattress or something. Course, I would have to straighten up a bit…

1) North Carolina
2) Glad to live here but I also miss New Orleans. And I would KILL to live in Manhattan. Too bad I can’t afford it. *G*
3) I’ve lived here nearly 11 years.
4) I agree with what Claudia said above about what’s good. And the big bugs don’t bother me, since they bear NO comparison to the roaches and other assorted creatures that lived in my previous two locales.
5) Well, we have the beach on one end of the state and the mountains on the other. Take your pick. *G*
6) I would be delighted to have any of the goddesses as house guests. Y’all are a fun bunch! Plus, I love house guests.

1. I’m currently living on the Mississippi gulf coast near Biloxi.
2. I would much rather go back home to Georgia (near Atlanta) where the rest of my family is but most of my husband’s family lives here.
3. I’ve lived in MS for about 3 years now.
4. Um the best thing here would have to be how near I am to the Biloxi casinos. If I travel a bit, the Mobile shopping centers in Alabama, the Destin Florida beaches, New Orleans are all about an hour away too. I just wish there was more things to do right around where I live lol.
5. Oh there is so much to do in Georgia! There are bookstores I love, shopping centers close by (including a mall), and Atlanta itself of course!
6. Hey, the more the merrier! We’re all supposed to go to the casinos next weekend, wanna come?

Kim. Poop? LOL Were they wanting it or offering it? Lancaster Co. PA is farm country and there is defiinitely lots of poop here. Of the cow variety. I hope that’s what was being offered on your Freecycle. Believe it or not, it makes sense to me. Farmer has manure, doesn’t farm. Another farmer or organic minded home owner has no cows but does grow things. Needs manure. A match made in heaven. We have lots of corn around here. Drool I can hardly wait. Tomato/cucumber sandwiches. Excuse me while I find a towel to wipe my chin.
Sandy, gotcha on the tourists. I live in tourist mecca also. From Easter thru Columbus Day, I avoid eastern Lancaster Co. Lots of Amish and outlets thataway. Isn’t it funny, tho, that we avoid tourists in our area but we go on vacation and become……..ta da! Tourists! Got your baggy shorts, flip flops and fanny pack ready to go? hee hee

Kari E, I’m from Punta Gorda! Yeah! Wish I was there right now. I want to move back so badly. I’ve also lived in Port Charlotte and Cape Coral and my best friend lives in North Port!
*I live in Centreville, Al
*I am not glad to live here, I really miss Cape Coral, Fl where I moved from. Though I’m not a true Floridian I was 4 when we moved there!
*I’ve lived in Centreville for almost 2 years, which is too long, I really miss my friends and family.
*The best thing is the scenery, unless it’s Winter!
*In Florida I can name a 1000 things, but they have a lot of nature things to do around here, it isn’t too bad and wouldn’t be too difficult for us to get in trouble!
*Of coarse, any goddess is welcome in my home, I would enjoy it completely. We could BBQ, go 4-wheeling, nature walks to the pond, sit around the fire pit and chat about romance novels etc. Bring the kids, they can play with my 9 (girl) & 10 (boy) year old.

What’s been interesting to me today is the fact that so many of us are happy to be living where we are. I think a lot of that has to do with the happiness/contentment in our daily lives. Altho I might like living somewhere else, I can imagine doing it far from my large extended family of children, step-children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Even when I don’t see them for some time, I like knowing they are nearby. That I can go to see them or hang out with them and not involve a plane ticket.
Somebody said they would love to live on the coast of Maine. I wanted to do that when I was young. Didn’t happen, but that’s OK. I can go visit. I wanted to live in the PNW also. That’s not going to happen either. 3000 miles from family? I don’t think so. So, I read a lot and visit places, people and times that I wouldn’t otherwise.
Thank you Writer Goddesses.

Where do you live now? Upstate South Carolina
I live in a great neighborhood on a beautiful lake in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains but I’m planning to downsize and move closer to family in North Carolina when my house sells. I’ve lived here 12 years which, in this area, means I’m a newcomer.
BEST: Some of the lowest gas prices in the country, small town but 10 miles from a major university. Gorgeous scenery, crystal clear lakes, award winning golf courses.
WORST: An hour from the closest mall. Two and a half hours from a decent airport. Only one small indy bookstore that carries very little romance.
KariE on 02 Apr 2008 at 1:17 pm #
Too bad you don’t still live here Kelly Ann. I would have someone to trade books with!! I’ve ever you come back to visit, send me a message. I would be happy to meet a fellow Goddess!
I went down to PG yesterday for the fist time in months (other than on 75), and was surprised by the changes that are still going on from ‘04. Can’t believe it will be 4 years since Charlie. Anyway…….the weather is great!!
PJ on 02 Apr 2008 at 1:21 pm #
WHAT TO DO: Depending on the season…visit state botanical gardens, boating and water sports on the lake, hiking in the mountains, shopping and great restaurants in Highlands and Cashiers, visit Biltmore House in Asheville, drive Blue Ridge Parkway, ride the Smokey Mountain Railroad, gamble in Cherokee, go to any one of numerous craft fairs, sporting events, concerts or plays at the university, two hour drive into Atlanta for fabu shopping. If you come in August we could go to Spitoono.
http://www.spittoono.com/
I love house guests and I love to cook so y’all come on down! I have a big house and if we run out of room inside you can enjoy an “outdoor adventure” on my long front porch.

Ronlyn, I love Seattle! My dh spent several years consulting there part-time so I got to visist several times. Oh, and my bro was born in Tacoma.
Ladytink, I love Destin. I think it’s one of my fave places to visit in Fla.
And the Blue Ridge Mts are to die for. Asheville has a great show circuit, too.
And who said she wanted to retire in Taos? I read that earlier and can’t find it now. Anyway, dh and I spent our honeymoon in Taos skiing. That should have warned me what our life was gonna be like years down the road!

Dartmouth, Nova Scoita!
SO glad to be living here.
I was away for 17 yrs. so I’m happy to be back in my hometown; I’ve lived in other parts of this province, plus Trinidad, PEI, Toronto, it’s nice to be home and surrounded by siblings and their families.
Dartmouth is lovely-called the city of lakes.
There are many places close by to see. Peggy’s Cove; Halifax is right across the harbour; drive 5 hrs and you can see the beautiful Cabot Trail of Cape Breton.
And final answer… I live in a tiny apt; be sure to bring an air mattress.
I’ll whip us up some Chocolate Carrot Cake and we can chat all night!
Kim on 02 Apr 2008 at 2:23 pm #
Margaret–yes, it was horse manure but still, it was POOP!! Geez.
I’m going to visit Kathy to eat chocolate carrot cake and then to PJ’s for chex mix.

I live in the Fox Valley area, near Appleton, Wisconsin.
I absolutely love it! I enjoy traveling to other places, but I love where I live.
I’ve been in WI all my life. Grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, only a 50 minute drive from where I am today.
The best is, we are close to everything you could ever want to do, big cities, northwoods, Packer games, Brewer games, Performing Arts Center, shopping, fishing, hiking, I could go on and on.
The worst is, the long winters. I love winter but honestly, enough already!
You are all invited, anytime! We also have a cabin in the northwoods on a beautiful lake. You can pick the location, or we can split it up, half of your stay near the city, half in the wilderness. We also have 3 horses for riding and 2 burro’s who love attention (they are like big dogs). Come visit!!
amy1242 on 02 Apr 2008 at 2:53 pm #

I can see I need to build some more vacation time into my schedule, which has ah, NONE for the next year. *sigh*
Here goes!
1) Orlando, FL
2) Love it! But I like other places, too.
3) Recent sorta. Moved here a year and a half ago.
4) I live in a really cool, trendy part of the city so there are a ton of things to do. Plus, within an hour’s drive there’s the beach, lots of kayaking, and it’s always warm enough to take a walk! The worst part — traffic. Ugh!
5) Some terrific cafes and restaurants, a great kayak tour to see gators and local fish ‘n fowl, and a nice refreshing day on the beach.
6) Com’n on down! So long as you do your own laundry, you’re welcome to stay any weekend you choose!
Gannon on 02 Apr 2008 at 3:27 pm #
1) I live in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina on 3 acres with a lovely view.
2) It’s beautiful here and laid back, but sometimes I miss being near a big city.
3) We moved here last summer–after 21 years traveling the globe thanks to my dh’s military career–so we are definitely newbees.
4) The best thing about living here is the scenery. It’s gorgeous all year round. The worst is that we are at least an hour or more from a decent mall. My kids definitely think that’s the worst!
5) Around here, there is no lack of outdoor activities: hiking, rafting, skiing (in the winter), shopping at local craft centers and old general stores. Asheville and the Biltmore House is less than 2 hours away. And of course, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games every July!
6) All Goddesses are always welcome at my house–kick back, relax, and Julia, I always have plenty of wine!

Hi, everyone you all sound spread out in the us, I must get my map out and look up where you are all from.
Where do you live? I live in Hampshire, England (the south of)
Are you glad? Yes I’ve lived here for almost 40 years but given the ultimate choice would like to go back to west Sussex where I’m from originally. Also it is a good distance from the MIL!!
Are you a long time resident? Yes 40 years this september. We moved from West Sussex when I was 9 months old as my parents bought a farm in Hampshire, so it is all I’ve really known and if I did go back to Sussex aopart from family I would have to start all over again.
What’s the best thing. We are about 45 mins by train from London and about 1hr by car from the coast and the new forest.
What would you enjoy doing. Well Nicole would like the New Forest with all the horses and ponies that roam free amd wild. There are the bright lights of London and a short hop across the channel to france. Also some good shops
Paula M on 02 Apr 2008 at 3:59 pm #
There are also some historical place s to go and see. By car we are about 7-8 hrs from Scotland and about 5hrs form the Welsh border.
Would I want any goddesses to visit. I’m up for it if any of you are, as long as you don’t mind putting up with the DH and the boys!! Got a spare bed and a sofa bed. You might have to muck in about the house but we are fairly easy to live with (I think)!!

PaulaM!!!! I’m so envious. Absolutely I would love the New Forest. Oh, and my CW trilogy heroines all hail from Hampshire originally.

Where do you live now? Cincinnati, Ohio
Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? Yes I like it here a lot.
Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? all my life…
What’s the best thing about your location? The worst? Best would be the change in seasons and my favorite foods. The worst the snow.
What would we enjoy doing if we came to visit your stomping ground? Go see a Reds game, the zoo, Newport on the levee. long list.
And finally… would you want any of us goddesses as house guests? Why or why not? (Be careful what you answer ’cause you never know who might show up on your doorstep when you least expect it!)
Sure come on over. We can go to graeters and pig out.

2. Grew up in New England but have lived here many years. I love it here. We get just enough snow and not too much heat.
3. Best part of living here is the friendly people and beautiful scenery. 2 hours to the mountains or the coast. Plus we have awesome wineries.
4. I had a cousin show up 10 years ago before Google maps-don’t know how he found us-out on a gravel road. If you can find us you can stay. Course you might have to bring books to read & chocolate.

I’m with you all the way, Claudia!
See, I told you ladies in my blog to be careful what you say, lol.
Paula, right this minute I can’t remember the exact place in Hampshire I chose for my sisters’ childhood home. I think I picked out a village/town, but I never had to use it since except for background info. And it had to be close enough to London for my Bk 3 hero to get there fairly easily, since in Bk2 he goes of searching for the youngest sister there — and can’t find her.

1. Northfield, MN–the City of Cows, Colleges and Contentment (yep–it’s actually written on our welcome to the city signs!)
2. I enjoy it. If I wasn’t living/loving MN, Washington DC would be my next choice, but I’m happy with where I’m at.
3. I’ve lived in MN my entire life, but only about eleven years where I’m at now.
4. Best: It’s a smaller town, but you’re only about 45 minutes away from the ‘big city’ and all it has to offer. Kate and Kay already extolled many of the good (& bad things about the state). Oh! MN is also the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’! Worst: The snow. I love the change of seasons, and don’t mind winter, but I’m SOOOOO ready for the snow to be gone!
5. Well, I’d recommend a visit the weekend after Labor Day. That’s the weekend of the annual town celebration–The Defeat of Jesse James days. It’s an absolutely wonderfully/fun weekend, with bank raid re-enactments, rodeos (mmmmm, cowboys!), and lots of other fun activities. Granted, at any other time of

I live in a little town called Andrews, SC - about 1 hour south of Myrtle Beach.
Am I gald? I guess so. I mean, my house and my land are completely paid for, but this is a small town with not much to do. Being closer to a big city would be great.
I am a long-time resident of South Carolina (never lived in any other state), but I have only lived in Andrews since September 2001.
The best thing that I can think of is that I am only two minutes from work. We do have a good Chinese restaurant. The worst thing is that this is a train stop town. If you are ever unlucky enough to get caught in town between two trains, you are stuck with no way to go around them.
Well, Myrtle Beach has lots of options. Restaurants, shopping, shows… And it’s not that long of a drive. I do it all the time.
I would LOVE to entertain any of the goddesses!! I have one guest bedroom, a comfy couch, and lots of floor space. I think we could have lots of fun!

Nicole, sorry but I had computer problems….I had been going to Spain since I was 16 to visit relatives. That summer my Aunt and Uncle took me to the Costa del Sol and I just fell in love with Marbella. Little did I know that I would end up living there. Oh, that sounds so lovely, Elsie! I love the Costa del Sol. One of my fave memories of all time was horseback riding up in the mountains there, eating roast chicken and drinking wine…. and since I was just in high school, wine was a big treat for me then.
And I’m sorry about your computer problems! I hate it when I can’t get on-line. I suffer very painful withdrawal symptoms.

1. Where do you live now? NYC
2. Are you glad? Or would you rather live somewhere else? I like it, but it looks like I might be moving soon, we’ll see.
3. Are you a long-time resident, or are you a recent transplant? I’ve lived in NYC proper for about 8 years, and the NYC Metro area for my entire life
