I’ve always wanted to ______

I’verockstanding.jpg done lots of cool things in my life and have seen lots of cool places.  But every now and then I think, I wish I could drive a race car really fast or ride a horse through a meadow with the wind in my face.   I’ve always wanted to stand at the top of one of those rocks out West that only crazy people climb, and see forever.   I’ve always wanted to swim with dolphins.swimwithdolphins.jpg

Some things I want to do require special skills I was not born with, like - I’ve always wanted to be able to sing Ave Maria - it’s a hard song, you know?  I’ve always wanted to be able to learn a language snap, like that.  Or play the piano or violin.  Or paint.  Not sure any of those things will ever happen, at least not well!  Or in any form that I’ll let you all see.  Ha!

DH has always wanted to parasail or hang glide.  If he ever does those things, he’ll do them alone - I get motion sick watching the IMAX, LOL.  He also wanted to swim with the fishes and recently got SCUBA certified, so he’s achieved that dream.  (But he has not “swum with the fishes” in a mafiosa context, so have no fear.)

Some of the things I’ve wanted to do, I’ve achieved.  But I still have a lot of dreams, things “I’ve always wanted to do.”  A lot of times, I’ll let a character in one of my books do the thing I’ve always wanted to do - and that’s almost as good.  It’s nice to have fantasies sometimes.

So what are some of the things you’ve always wanted to do?  Are they something you can do now?  Something you need to train for?  Do you think you’ll ever do them, or is it okay to just keep them a dream?  If you’re a writer, do you let your characters fulfill your dreams?

Funny you should mention this… I’ve always wanted to live in another country (specifically in Europe) and it’s been on my mind a lot lately. I’ve been spreading the word at my job as a colleague has just been transferred to the UK. I’ve always wanted to have that experience and if this itch lasts more than a month, I’m going to pursue this. We’ll see.

Okay, don’t laugh. I always wanted to be the first female, major league baseball pitcher…in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, two down.

I always wanted to be able to sing the national anthem at the World Series.

  3. Ellen on 26 Mar 2008 at 7:40 am #

What would NY do without you FreshE?

Sevillia (Seville) would be an incredible place to live!

  4. Ellen on 26 Mar 2008 at 7:44 am #

Karen…you live in Florida. That is where ALL the great dolphin swimming events are. I MUST swim with them just once in my life.

  5. Kim on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:05 am #

In the too big for my britches column: play the piano and sing really well. Alas, I am just not musically inclined at all so instead I worble loudly and badly when I’m alone. ;)

One day I want to see Versailles. Its taken me about 15 years to convince my husband to travel abroad. He’s currently at the “when we have time/money to travel I’ll take you”. Yay!

I’d also love to go dancing with my husband. Some day!

This is really silly but I always wanted to bake NY cheesecake but I was completely intimidated by it. I didn’t want to try it, fail and beat myself up over it. Then one day at work, this woman whom I seriously disliked brought one to a potluck. That was it. If she could do it so could I. LOL. By the next week I’d made one and it was perfect. Now bring on the springform pans and oodles of cheesecake! I’m still working on them not cracking but I can make them without hesitation now.

Oh, and I’ve always wanted to sing karaoke. I’m hoping to do it in San Fran this July.

  6. Lisa H on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:10 am #

    Kim - Can I have a piece…pleeeeease?

    Ellen - You go girl!

Me? I have always wanted to play piano—I am so not musically inclined. Also, I wish I could tango. I mean really great tango with a red dress and a rose between my teeth. Say with a really hot tango partner like, oh I don’t know, Johnny Depp?

My other dream is to live in Europe…maybe Italy. I hope when we retire we can at least travel there, maybe somehow we can find a way to stay for a month or two.

I do sometimes make the characters in my books live the dreams I have. Its fun and fulfilling.

  7. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:22 am #

Ellen - I’d never laugh at a dream. I bet lots of people wish they were the ones to pull out the game in the ninth!

Kim, if you karaoke at National, I’ll buy your beer, LOL.

Lisa, I’ve always wanted to live in an Italian villa for a while, too. How romantic!

  8. KariE on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:32 am #

I’ve always wanted to travel out of the US and Canada.
I’ve always wanted to travel across the US in an RV and see all the sights, God made and man made.
I’ve always wanted to sing well. Maybe make money with my singing. And I’m not talking about William Hung style of singing to make money.
I’ve always wanted to ride in a helicopter.
I’ve always wanted to snow ski, and do it well. (I’ve never tried it.)

  9. KariE on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:38 am #

I’m sure one day I will do a couple of them but I doubt all of them. I think it is okay to keep them as a dream. There are things in life that, as a kid, I imagined would be great and grand, but in reality, they were just okay. I think it would be worse to expierence something and have it suck, than to just dream it and have it wonderful in my head. Make sense?

Oh, I’ve also always wanted to me a trophy wife. You know, the beautiful, bug busted, small waisted wife that every woman wishes she was. I don’t know why.

  10. doglady on 26 Mar 2008 at 8:42 am #

I would love to swim with the dolphins. One small problem. I can’t swim. So I guess that would be part of my dream too - to learn how to swim and THEN swim with the dolphins.

I have done the hang-gliding thing and the mountain climbing in the Alps thing. I would love to live in Wales for about a year. My Dad’s family is from Wales and I would love to live in a little village in a little cottage and WRITE!!!

Of course I lived one of my dreams when I sang in Europe. Its one of those treasures you lock up in your heart to get you through the tough times.

Now, I am ready to live my next big dream and become a published romance author. Tell me Goddesses, is that sometimes as scary as hang gliding?

After my divorce, I kinda felt like “is this all there is?” determined to not cave to it, I made a list of things I wanted to do before I die. Some of them border on ridiculous (ie eating tacos in a restaurant that doesn’t serve them, throwing a teabag in Boston Harbor while dressed as an Indian) to the actual dreams. In the two years since making the list, I have been able to knock a couple of them off and I am still working on it. I think our dreams give us a place to go when reality gets too much. Gives us something to look forward to, even if we only ever talk about doing it. The thing is though, I’m having so much fun knocking things off the list, and amazingly enough…the list keeps growing.
    Some big ones are:
Have one of my songs sung on stage (this one is in process & I am STOKED!)
Live in Italy for a while
    See Ireland
Take a road trip from Lost to Found
Follow Rte 66 from beginning to end

  12. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:00 am #

Like, yeah, Doglady :-) Totally terrifying sometimes.

But you’re on your way - have you gone to RWA page to see your name in lights? Or at least on a list, LOL. Congratulations on your GH final! We’re so proud of you.

I’d like to live in Wales, too. I’m going there for the weekend next month - after I’m finished at the London Book Fair. I have friends who live near Caerphilly Castle and I’m going to see them then!

  13. DebMarlowe on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:00 am #

I’m with Kim, I always wanted to be musical. but never learned. My kids take music lessons, so I’m living vicariously thru them! :-)

I would love to travel more. Fresh, I’ve had the living abroad dream as well. I always picture myself in a little cottage in the English countryside and ignore all the myriad real life difficulties that such a move would actually entail!

Karen, friends of ours rave about the Discovery Cove dolphin experience!

  14. Claudia Dain on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:12 am #

My biggest dream was to go to Britain. I’ve wanted to go all my life, waiting and dreaming. Going there was the dream that stayed with me, not fading away like other dreams.

Two and a half years ago my DH and I climbed on the plane on the eve of my birthday and when we landed in England the next morning, he whispered, “Happy Birthday.” It was one of the most special moments of my life.

  15. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:17 am #

Aw, Claudia, your DH is a keeper! How sweet!

DebM - I’ve heard great things about it too. It’s on my list of Very Possible things to do. As for music, I used to sing with a choir, but I was more of a crooner and never fit it. Now, I’m more of a croaker, so sad. I do sing in the shower when nobody’s home, ha.

I remember this episode of TAXI years ago when Rev Jim sat down at the piano at a party and miraculously started playing. The look on his face was priceless, although the look on his face usually was priceless…

  16. Susan K (soon to be Susan M) on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:32 am #

Well one of my dreams is about to be realized. I’m getting married in 2 1/2 weeks!

I also want to have children (I don’t think that dream is too far off…God willing).

I want to become a published author.

I would like to travel more and see the sights in the US.

I’d also like to travel to Europe (specifically Scotland, England, Ireland and Italy) and visit a castle.

I’ve always wanted to sing well (not going to happen).
And also play the piano. (I am not musically inclined.)

  17. Emmiebee on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:36 am #

I dream about playing with the big cats. I get to love and squeeze and examine the little guys every day, but every time I have a chance, I go and soul-gaze at the Big Guys. The ones that could eat me. My DH has to drag me away from the tigers (well, and those cool flying fox bats) at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom. Oh, to feel a lion’s mane, and touch a tiger’s toes, and run my hands over a cheetah’s lean, glorious shoulders- I can literally feel my heart yearning just thinking about it! Got to get there someday. Got to start looking at how today- thanks for the reminder, guys!

  18. Gannon on 26 Mar 2008 at 9:51 am #

    Claudia, what a wonderful memory!

I’ve been blessed in the travel category and have been to many countries and lived in two foreign countries (Bahrain and Italy). Lisa and Karen R, you should travel to Italy if you can and stay in a Tuscan villa–magical!

The one country I’m dying to see and have not is Ireland. I’m determined to get there in the not too distant future. To live in an Irish cottage for awhile would be divine.

I’ve also had this fantasy to learn Irish step dancing, since the first time I saw Riverdance–I’ve seen it 3 times! Somehow, I have a feeling I would spend more time on the floor than on my feet. ;) That’s why it’s a fantasy.

  19. freshechelle on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:07 am #

Aw shucks Ellen, you’re sweet to say that but NY won’t even notice I’m gone. Someone will fill the vacuum created if my chronic whining about NY ends.

  20. Claudia Dain on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:08 am #

Emmiebee, your fantasy made me think of Jay Leno–he clearly has the same dream. Every time he has the big cats on The Tonight Show you can see how he adores the cats, just plays with them constantly. If only you could be a guest on The Tonight Show when he has the big cats on! How hard could that be?

  21. RachelG on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:30 am #

I’ve always (well not my entire life) dreamed of playing hockey with Mark Messier. I have a whole fantasy about him and his stick handling.

  22. Lisa H on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:45 am #

Nice Rachel G. I hope your dream comes true.

Snicky - That’s great about your song. Let us know!
Some of my girlfriends and I were talking about dreams and hope yesterday. They are so intertwined. One should always have dreams and hope that one day they will come to pass. But one should always work hard to achieve those dreams no matter how elusive. I like that you made a list and are going about crossing things off. I’m willing to bet a tango with Johnny that you will have everything crossed off one day.

Claudia - no wonder you write such magical romances, your husband sounds like the real thing.

  23. Lisa H on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:45 am #

Dog lady - I’m so happy for you. What a wonderful time in your life!

  24. Susan K (soon to be Susan M) on 26 Mar 2008 at 10:56 am #

Rachel G - When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional hockey player. And my stunning skating and puck handling abilities (which I don’t possess at all) would draw the attention of Brett Hull and he would fall madly in love with me and we would marry and have lots of little hockey players. Of course my dreams of this ever happening were dashed when he remarried a couple of years ago…then he retired….and now I’m getting married.

  25. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:25 am #

I always wanted to be an ice skater ever since I saw Dorothy Hamill in the Olympics. Since I couldn’t skate 10 feet without falling on my butt, I knew that would be a book-character kind of dream!

Susan K/M - congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Rachel, LOL, Stick-handling indeed. Glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I read your post.

Gannon - I hope you get to Ireland. It’s a beautiful place. The time I went, I was so disappointed not to see Brianna Concannon’s B&B listed, even though I knew it was only fantasy (from Born in Ice, by Nora Roberts - great trilogy!). I had a mental picture of her place and a taste for her desserts.

  26. Julia London on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:25 am #

Fresh, it is so funny you say that, because in the last year or so, I’ve been thinking the same thing. I wish I would have taken my lap top and gone and lived in different parts of the world, known different men (slut) and done various jobs.

now, its a little too late — altho Jack London and I talk about it. Maybe one of these days…

  27. KariE on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:26 am #

I can’t believe I will admit this, but when I was a wee lad, I REALLY wanted to be on KIDS Inc. The Mickey Mouse Club was a close second, but ONLY if I was able to wear the mouse hats like in the day of Annette Funicello. Those hats were COOL!!!!

  28. Nicole Jordan on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:29 am #

Yep, these days I mostly let my characters fulfill my dreams of travel and romance! I have little time for anything myself. Oh, and I do dream about my new young mare being a champion hunter one day. But that’s a long way off right now. I’d be happy just to find time to ride!

Hope all your happy dreams come true, Goddesses!

  29. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:29 am #

DH and I talk about that too, Julia (minus the different men). It’s fun to dream.

I met a man in an airport last summer who a few years earlier had sold his built-from-the-ground-up business to some really rich guys. He made a mint. Then asked his wife what she wanted to do. She said she’d always wanted to live in NYC and study art. So they closed up their house in Arkansas, rented an apt in Greenwich Village and she studied art for a year. He did some painting and they both enjoyed their dream. At the end of the year, they went back home to Arkansas and took up their lives there. He now works for a small literary magazine.

I thought, wow, what a way to enjoy the fruits of your labor while you’re still able!

  30. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:32 am #

Emmiebee - my DH also wants to socialize with big cats. I think I’d be too terrified they’d eat me.

  31. anneriailin on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:43 am #

I have had the same dream for many many years. I yearn to go to Britain. And I don’t mean for just a vacation. I would love to live there and be able to wander and roam all over that enchanted island. I’d love to have a little cottage on the coastline of Wales. Walk in the footsteps of my ancestors. And I would really love to trace my Welsh family ancestors. I’d love to stand where Keira Knightly stood in P&P on that overlook and let the wind whip in my hair. There’s so much history in Britain and I’d love to see where it was made and experience it. That’s not asking too much, is it?? LOL

  32. SuzyQ on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:46 am #

Most of the things I want to do are travel related. On the top of my list is to see the Pyramids in Egypt. I want to see England/Ireland/Scotland. I want to go to Greece. I want to travel to Australia (and while I’m over there also see the islands in the South Pacific).

Another cool thing I would want to do is to take one of those planes up to the very outer atmosphere and see the Earth below. I think this would be easier to handle than the g-force of the shuttle. At the very least I would want to experience what zero gravity felt like. Don’t they have something like that in Florida at the Space Center?

  33. amy1242 on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:49 am #

Travel. I want to travel and then return to my cozy cabin in the WI northwoods by a lake, where a big day for me would be to drive to the city for the day to visit with friends, go out to lunch and shop for everyday items. Then as winter approaches, plan my next travel adventure. Oh, and meet Jeff Corwin. The guy makes me laugh! Hey, maybe we can plan a Goddess Swim With The Dolphin’s Weekend Getaway! I’m IN!

  34. Sheridan LA on 26 Mar 2008 at 11:57 am #

After my divorce I made a list like this and have to add 2 on for every 1 I knock off. It has been amazing. I have gone overseas, certified for SCUBA, ridden elephants in Thailand, climbed Machu Picchu, etc. I forego a lot of things to save money for these trips and adventures every year. It has made a huge difference in my life - things went from “maybe someday” to “that is this year, next is…” I create websites when I come back and some of my friends either join me on my next trip or follow some of my trips on their own

So, this year looks like China and India, then for my 40th birthday in a couple years, I am going to climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari in the Serengeti.

I also found that when I don’t look at my list for a long time, I open it up and see that there are a few things I can mark off of it. I sometimes don’t even realize they are things still on the list (it is kinda long)

  35. Sheridan LA on 26 Mar 2008 at 12:05 pm #

oops.. guess I babbled too long..

I don’t realize that they are things still on the list - I forget what all is on there sometimes. Makes it even more fun to see things I cross off subconsciously.

  36. PJane1031 on 26 Mar 2008 at 12:26 pm #

Two years ago I achieved one of my dreams, and became a first-time homeowner. While exciting, and I’m enjoying every minute (usually!) of the experience, it was also bittersweet, because in my ‘dreams’ I had imagined that I would be taking that step when I was married, and not when I was still single. My ‘Prince Charming’ is still in my dreams as well. Hopefully we’ll meet someday! I also want to go horseback riding in Australia with my sister. Her husband has a major dislike of flying, etc., so we can leave him to take care of her business (she runs an equine reproduction center), and she and I can go. I would also love to compete in a dance competition. I know I have other dreams as well, some professional, some just for fun, but the ones I listed are just what came to me off the top of my head!

“The greatest achievements were at first and for a time dreams. The oak sleeps in the acorn.”
    -James Allen

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
    -Eleanor Roosevelt

I sing first soprano in my church choir. For my mother’s birthday, I want to surprise her with Ave Maria, if my choir director will allow it and it is liturgically correct for the Mass.

I would love to travel to England and Scotland and see the castles and large houses at my leisure.

I have “Travel to Australia and NZ” my bucket list. Also there are skydiving, hang gliding, riding in a hot air balloon, and walking along the Great Wall of China.

I would love to eventually finish my WIP (work in pieces) and have it published (Gooo, Doglady!!)

I want to see one of my architectural designs published in Arch Digest.

    Ahhh, dreams . . .

  38. Julia London on 26 Mar 2008 at 12:40 pm #

to clarify, K-RO — I don’t want the different men now. I have the perfect one for me.

  39. Kay on 26 Mar 2008 at 1:54 pm #

KareR, Congrats to you on the RITA noimnation!! Great topic. My kids and I were discussing this in the car the other day. Both of them want to scuba dive, swim with dolphins and travel lots.

    1) I have always wanted to go to Italy. Dh and I were going to do it for our 20th anniversary (next June), but it may have to wait.

    2) I want to be published. That may help achieve # 1. LOL

    3) want to take my kids to Korea, where they were born. That will happen before # 1. They’ll be grown before I know it.

    4) I would like to take my kids to swim with the dolphins.

    5) The most unrealistic thing I want to do is travel into outer space—-tot he moon would be great, but just in oribt *SIGH* would do it for me.

  40. Sandy "Snik" White on 26 Mar 2008 at 2:20 pm #

LisaH- I think a tango with Johnny just got added to the list ;) As for my song, the lyrics are written and I am working with the musicians now to put the music together. The experience is so exciting and while I don’t know yet where this song is going to go or who is going to sing it…I just have to believe it will happen.

I also thought of another one ladies…I want to meet you guys. The goddesses that I have come to know and appreciate for their humor and their compassion. You ladies inspire me, and I wish to share a meal with you!

  41. Kim on 26 Mar 2008 at 2:58 pm #

    Lisa–Of course!

KarenR–You’re on. Make it wine or something strong and fruity. Beer is icky.

RachelG–*Snork* You never fail to make me LOL

    Claudia–awww. How incredibly romantic.

Julia–uh, thanks for clarifying that. Cuz if you were planning on letting your characters live vicariously you’d have to switch to Avon Red or Ellora’s Cave *g*

You know, so many of us have mentioned traveling. I think we need to plan a Goddess get-away. We can all travel across Europe together. Wouldn’t that be a blast?

  42. Karen Rose on 26 Mar 2008 at 2:58 pm #

Julia, I’m sorry, I was teasing you and it didn’t come out that way! Ack!

    Congrats on the song, Sandy.

Kay, you will have your dreams someday - and maybe EVEN outer space. I’ve always wanted to do that, too.

wow. i can barely think of things i would like to do, mostly because thats what i’m trying to figure out right now. in the meantime, i’ll be backpacking in the rainforest with the DH and then relaxing on the sunny beaches of Puerto Rico. I can’t wait!

i would love to swim with dolphins, go to Australia and NZ and travel around the globe in a schooner. off the top of my head thats about it.

  45. Paula M on 26 Mar 2008 at 4:31 pm #

I have fulfilled a few of the dreams that my DH and I have before we had children.
We have been skiing, moved house, been on safari(when my big bro got married in Kenya!).
Some of the dreams that are left are to return to the seychelles(in the Indian Ocean) for our 25th Anniversary( only 8 years to go) - we went on our honeymoon there. I would love to visit America, Australia and New Zealand.

  46. Claudia Dain on 26 Mar 2008 at 4:54 pm #

We have so many well-traveled goddesses! What fun.

My parents were young marrieds when the Alaskan Highway was built, which was pretty much like being able to drive to the moon! They wanted so much to drive up that highway and see Alaska, and they did, when their kids were gone and they were in their 60s. They drove up that famous road, giggling like kids the whole time, I’m sure. It was such a dream, a long delayed dream for them.

It just is so encouraging to me that dreams can be achieved at any age, as long as you still want it. The joy of achieving it doesn’t ever get old.

  47. Ann in IL on 26 Mar 2008 at 5:33 pm #

    1. I want a “to die for” elegant ballgown.
    2. I want to dance a walz in a glorious ballroom.
    3. I want my partner to be dressed in full Scottish regalia.

Then I want to go home and stay home.
I never aspired to a “career”.
I hate working for money. There is so much more reward to cooking a home made meal and keeping a house than any other “job” out there.

    I know, I’m weird.

I really wish I could paint or draw, and I’d love to be able to play any instrument. Just not badly enough to practice or learn. :-)

Those two things are the biggest.

Rock climbing. Terrified of heights but am some how enthralled by the idea of rock climbing
I love to scuba! Not certified yet.
    Med school :)
The whole jumping off a rock formation into murky alternating shallow/deep waters. (Again the afraid of heights thing)
I have many more but need to get back to theological paper…(can my procrastination be a symptom of fear) :)

Hello, ladies. Back from the salt mines.

Claudia, that is such a sweet memory.

Karen Rose, you lucky thing you!! Even a weekend in Wales sounds wonderful!

I haven’t gone over to RWA yet, but I will!

Yes, Lisa H, this is an amazing time in my life. So glad to share it here on Mt. Olympus!

Sheridan, I love your list idea. My voice teacher called it a Life List. I started one when I was studying with her - places to see, things to do and experience. It keeps you going when times get tough.

I would love to sing in tune, not gonna happen. I got an A in music for NOT singing in my senior year. A mis-guided guidance counselor signed me up for the class.
I want to be able to complete the trip to Ireland and Scotland we planned before we got the grandsons.
I want to have a showing of my photographs.
Claudia, you have such a great DH!

    - Ballroom Dance
    - Travel to New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland
    - Dress up as a clown and go entertain at children’s hospitals
    - Write children’s books with songs and activities to go with each one (I kinda did that when I worked at day care but the day care kept it all :Þ)

When I look at it, none of those seem out of the realm of possibility. I could even do the travel part if I made enough with the books. :D

I’m still in highschool so most of my dreams are small things like getting married in a beautiful church…. with a swan ice sculpture…. i jsut can’t see it with out. LOL. But I desperately want a library in my house. Filled with romances and classics that i will work my way through until i’m an old lady. Then my grandkids will ask if i had read all of them, and proudly i’m going to say, “most but i’m still working on it.” LOL
