Peeps!

I suspect that tomorrow’s FROS blog will feature some lovely Easter hunks. In a preemptive strike, here are a few of MY favorite Easter hunks – of chocolate. And sugar, and marshmallow.ch-bunny-2.jpg

Yes, I believe I’ve mentioned my chocolate addiction. My favorite holidays are therefore Halloween, Easter, and Eat-a-Pound-of-Chocolate Day. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that EaPoCD was discontinued in 1951 due to health concerns and having an unpronounceable acronym. Halloween and Easter, though, seem fairly well entrenched.peeps1.jpg

eas-basket.jpgSo come on, ‘fess up. Do you eat Peeps? Have you made off with your kids’ chocolate bunnies? Do you start with the ears? What about those Jelly-Bellies? And those hard sugar eggs with the little scene of spring inside?

Suzanne, this is just between you and I, right?
I have been known to filtch my kids peeps, only for their own good mind you. All that grainy yellow sugar on gooey marshmallow can’t possibly be good for them. And WHAT was that Bunny thinking, to inflict all that chocolate on those unsuspecting poor children? As a mother that cares it was my duty to save them from the chocolate overdose! Anybody believing that load of felgacarb?? I didn’t think so.
I always ate the feet first, you don’t want them trying to escape half eaten do you?
I am an elitist on the jelly bellies. I want the gourmet flavors more than the regular ones.
The sugar eggs are beyond even my endurance. I do like the little dioramas going on in them.

Personally, I like my Peeps aged like a fine wine. IOW, I buy them on sale after Easter. Sometimes way after. Like Mother’s Day. After intense research on the Internet for about 15-20 minutes, I discovered that the only thing that can kill a Peep is fire. However, it just transmutes into a nice, crunchy looking bit of glop. I imagine it just tastes caramelized at that point. I would never set one of fire. That’s a Dave Barry guy kind of thing to do.

I also found out that nothing will kill their eyes. Which some web guru offers as proof they came from far out in the universe.

I prefer my chocolate of the Ghiradelli/Lady Godiva sort. No to Jellly Bellies. Never tried the eggs.

Gotta have my coffee now. mumble, mumble, mumble

I don’t have children, but I am very mom-like in the grocery store and buy all the candy for me!
The grandparents of the girlies I used to be nanny to always buy a huge basket for each. filled with chocolate of all sorts. Cadbury mini eggs, Caramilk eggs…and ruining me for all other chocolate- Lindt Easter Bunnies. the silky smoothness ..oh my goodness. did I just get drool on the keyboard?
I eat the ears first. I saw the best t shirt at Cafe Press. http://www.cafepress.com/buy/easter+bunny/-/pv_design_details/pg_1/id_18992227/opt_/fpt_fXcq__DB__aCXDa_qz0X_VOD_eah__lS/c_10651/
I got my first migraine over an Easter Creme egg..oh the memories!

  4. Kathy/Cookiedough on 22 Mar 2008 at 6:37 am #

trust me, the tshirt fits the theme of the day!lol
    I don’t like peeps
As for non edible eggs I like Pisanki. the details are gorgeous!
I senior sat the sweetes Estonian lady and a few months before she passed away, she gave me two that she had made. They always sit out in an egg shaped glass dish, along with marble ones from my mom.

  5. Judy F on 22 Mar 2008 at 7:09 am #

Oh I love peeps. But my favorites are the Reese Cup Eggs. Love them frozen. I don’t have any Children so any candy I buy is mine. LOL

I also like marchmellow eggs. Really anything with chocolate is ok fine by me

  6. PJ on 22 Mar 2008 at 7:35 am #

I have vivid memories of the day I discovered that the Easter Bunny had delivered chocolate bunnies, WITH EARS, to my friends. I was shocked! I thought all chocolate bunnies were earless! My mom, you see, had quite a fondness for chocolate bunny ears. (grin)

Nowadays, I made my own Easter chocolates. I give them all away except for the “testers”. I wouldn’t dream of not quality “taste testing” everything that comes from my kitchen. That just wouldn’t be right.

  7. doglady on 22 Mar 2008 at 8:37 am #

ROFLMAO on the t-shirt! Loved it! I am definitely an ears first person on the chocolate bunnies. Everything else follows quickly! I don’t do Peeps. I like my sugar chocolate flavored thank you.

My Mom came last Sunday and brought Easter baskets. Mine was a chocolate cornucopia!! YAY!! GODIVA! She also brought baskets for the dogs and cats. Lots of treats and toys. And they KNOW those baskets on top of the fridge hold goodies galore. Thank God my two boy cats are too overweight to make it to the top of the fridge. My girl cat thinks she’s a dog so she doesn’t leap.

Jelly Bellies were my DH’s favorites. For Easter we used to fill each other’s baskets with books, CDs and for him all he wanted was JELLY BELLIES!!!

    Happy Sugar Comas to All!!

  8. elsiehogarth on 22 Mar 2008 at 8:59 am #

Suzanne, I love Peeps. In all colors, shapes, forms etc. Isn’t it wonderful that, now, you can get them for all holidays: pumpkins for Halloween/Thanksgiving, turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas trees/snowmen for Christmas.

Malt ball eggs a la Whoppers are also another favorite. I’m not really a jellie bean fan but I do like the red ones and the orange ones.

  9. elsiehogarth on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:04 am #

Suzanne, I forgot….On CBS Sunday Morning, tomorrow, Rita Braver will have a feature about PEEPS. Try to watch it.

  10. Karen Hawkins on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:22 am #

I don’t do Peeps. I’m not a big marshmellow gal, to begin with. I like my sweetness to have substance.

That said, my kids LOVE Peeps. So I always make sure they get a good Peeps fix every Easter.

Personally, I’m more interested in the Peeps Microwave War. We’ve got some scheduled for this afternoon, in fact! Our pre-Easter celebration. :)

Now, if we were talking Cadbury eggs here . . . that’s a whole other issue! YUMMMMM!!!

  11. FreshEChelle on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:23 am #

I am, well, over 29 years old, and I don’t recall ever eating chocolate bunny ears. Those belong to my mother/the Bunny. She buys the chocolate, she controls the chocolate.

Peeps must be connected to the religious side of Easter in some way given how much we worship them. Long live the Peep (especially the chocolate covered ones!).

  12. Claudia Dain on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:34 am #

Oh, I don’t know, Suzanne, my mother kept the Eat A Pound Of Chocolate day alive and well. She kept a one pound slab of Hershey’s chocolate in her nightstand and would whack off a chunk (or two or four) while reading in bed. It was a constant source of shame and horror to her that I never did develop a taste for chocolate. Or marshmallow (as her favorite cookie was the famous Mallomar–this was also scandalous).

So, no Peeps for me. No chocolate bunnies. No jelly beans. No Easter? No, no, that can’t be right.

  13. RachelG on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:49 am #

    I hate Peeps.

My kids all hated malted milk ball eggs, and I used to load up thier baskets because I loved them. Oh, and black jelly beans. I love black jelly beans.

  14. Lisa H on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:57 am #

I hate peeps. I only like the Reese’s PB eggs and any snickers bite size candy. I am not tempted by candy, I am tempted by pizza and chicken wings…so for Easter, I should be safe.

  15. jessie e on 22 Mar 2008 at 10:06 am #

I LOVE Peeps! I like them stale, though, so when I get them for Easter, I open the box and try to leave them out for a few days before I eat them. The operative word here is “try,” because the little chicks almost never make it to staleness. They’re too tempting. Oh, and I love the chocolate bunny T-shirt!

  16. Emmiebee on 22 Mar 2008 at 10:16 am #

Love Peeps, love Bunnies, love Jelly Bellies, and worship Cadbury Creme Eggs. I have three in my freezer right now, frozen solid so they will take me a long time to chew upon. I have also seen in a “foodie” catalog (can’t remember which), a Chocolate Easter Bunny with- multiple sets of ears! Brilliant! No explanations to kids/husband/therapists needed! They even had one set with a hat- super cute.
    Yum.
    -Emmiebee, Bunny-lover

  17. DebMarlowe on 22 Mar 2008 at 10:25 am #

I don’t love peeps, but I could eat a pound of those Cadbury mini eggs! Yum! And then they went and made them in a dark chocolate version–how could they do that to me? Just…say….no!

My Dad loves Peeps, though, and I buy them for him every year. Yep, I’m an enabler. :-)

  18. Sabrina Jeffries on 22 Mar 2008 at 10:42 am #

I don’t like Peeps. I don’t like much of the marshmallow type Easter candy, and I can’t stand jelly beans. I do, however, love chocolate. In any form–cheap chocolate, good chocolate, Reese’s (I like nuts and peanut butter, too), chocolate-covered anything (I even had some chocolate-covered edamame beans) And I too like chocolate malted balls, Rachel.

I used to eat some of my son’s candy when he was a boy, since he used to only eat regular chocolate. They always gave him an assortment of stuff at school. Back then he wouldn’t eat the malted-milk balls or Reese’s or Krackle or anything with nuts in it.

Then he started broadening his likes. Sigh. He eats it all now, although I do dole it out to him a little per day. Oh, and he still refuses to eat nuts–he sucks the chocolate off things like peanut M&Ms, so no he doesn’t get those *G*. Have you ever cleaned up nuts after the chocolate’s been sucked off? Ugh.

  19. Margaret on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:16 am #

Sabrina, I live within a 30 minute drive of Hershey, PA. When I go up there sometimes, the smell can drive you crazy. Years ago, people could take tours of the actual factory. It got to be too much of a hazard for tourists and workers. So, they built Chocolate World at the entrance to the HersheyPark theme park. There is a ride within in the building that takes you on a miin-tour of how Hershey’s came to be. Then, you are deposited in Chocolate Town. No escaping all the chocolate, t-shirts and all things Hershey related. It’s the only place I know where y ou can get a 2 lb. Hershey candy bar.

And Peter Paul is nearer to me that that. On a cold rainy day, the smell drifts this way. I find myself needing a chocolate fix and not quite realizing why. PA is home to all sorts of candy makers.

  20. Suzanne Enoch on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:21 am #

Oh, you guys are just putting me into a chocolatie swirl of deliciousness — except for the chocolate-sucked-off-peanuts, Sabrina. *g*

I’m not a big Peep eater, though they do fascinate me. There’s definitely something alien about them. I’m with you on that one, Margaret. I think they came to take over the Earth, but the atmosphere turned their space suits into a sugary coating and they melted into chick-like shapes.

  21. Lois on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:26 am #

No peeps for me, but I sure am enjoying my Cadbury Creme Eggs. Sigh. . . heavenly. :)

    Lois

  22. Margaret on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:33 am #

    PA candy manufacturers:

    Peeps are made in Bethlehem
Hershey has you-know-what sort of candy
Mars PA has Mounds & Peter Paul
Wilburs is popular in this area. They are in Lititz.

I think PA has so many chocolate candy makers because it was settle by the Germans and they are famous candy makers. I’m not sure what others are here. Those are the ones I’m familiar with. Too familiar. LOL

  23. Lisa H on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:55 am #

Karen H - you are going to have a hard time (no pun intended) topping last week’s fros…unless of course you have a picture of Johnny Depp au natural…that would definitely do it. :)

Happy Easter everyone and enjoy your peeps or chocolate or both!

  24. Karen Rose on 22 Mar 2008 at 11:55 am #

Suzanne, I don’t eat peeps, but I scarf the marshmallow bunnies. Just got some at Wal-Mart last night for the kids’ baskets. oops. No problem, they got oodles of other stuff :-)

I saw a really horrid (scandalously funny) photo of a the “ultimate peep show” featuring pink peeps on stage and yellow peeps in teh audience throwing peep-sized dollar bills at them. There was a pole involved. I laughed, so mortified with myself as I did so. So wrong, yet so funny.

  25. Meg on 22 Mar 2008 at 12:01 pm #

Oh I love my some peeps! But I can’t stand to look at them when I eat them. They just look so pittiful with their little heads missing! And when I was a kid, the ears went first. After the ears, I remember them being in the freezer for a long time. I would occasionally nibble on them but I never remember actually finishing one. I have never been a fan of the Cadbury eggs but the Snickers Eggs are marvolous–even better than the candy bar.

  26. Judy F on 22 Mar 2008 at 12:04 pm #

oh black jelly beans. I adore them. I must go get me some LOL

  27. FreshEChelle on 22 Mar 2008 at 12:09 pm #

Can I request an action adventure strip of Will & Jane with a Peeps as the special guest star?

  28. Meg on 22 Mar 2008 at 12:19 pm #

Jelly Beans… Not really a fan. Has anyone tried any of the Harry Potter Jelly Beans? They have some really BAD flavors: Grass, Booger, Sausage, Soap, Vomit, Black Pepper plus a few more. I bought some bags for my niece and nephew and they tricked me into trying the Grass and Soap. And they really do taste like grass and soap! They are good for practical jokes though. :-)

  29. Ladytink_534 on 22 Mar 2008 at 12:43 pm #

I’ve always thought Peeps were gross lol. I guess it’s the sugar on the marshmallow. My favorite Easter fix is Cadbury Cream eggs.

  30. Kay on 22 Mar 2008 at 1:46 pm #

I think peeps are gross. I also have kids, so peeps will be in their baskets tomorrow. Since we have 6> inches of snow, and it’s still coming down, I suspect some of the peeps will drown in mugs of hot chocolate after church. :-)

I hate jelly beans, too. I hold out for chocolate, and always get a bite of each kid’s bunny, with their permission. I call it the “mommy tax” and they believe me. It also keeps me from eating a whole bunny of my own.

We will have to have out “easter egg hunt” inside tomorrw, because of the snow. This is only the second time we’ve had a lot of snow on Easter since we’ve had kids. I can just picture the chaos in th morning.

  31. cail on 22 Mar 2008 at 2:09 pm #

K-Rose, I saw the peep show too! it was hysterical!

i’m a peep and Cadbury Creme Egg girl myself. i was known to eat 3 of those bad boys (creme eggs) before 9am. Easter is not a good time for my waistline. HOWEVER the DH had agreed to give up smoking in exchange for me avoiding the vending machines. This means chocolate only in moderation. We’re both doing pretty well so far.

  32. cail on 22 Mar 2008 at 2:09 pm #

oh, also, my dad would always put a package of peeps under my pillow for easter. what a good peep lover.

  33. Suzanne Enoch on 22 Mar 2008 at 2:30 pm #

Oh, put me in the Cadbury creme egg fan section. They are SO good. I think I start drooling the minute I spot one.

I don’t have kids, but the niece and nephews are coloring Easter eggs at my house tonight. Everybody says it’s because I have the biggest kitchen, but I think it’s because egg dye stains don’t freak me out. As long as they don’t get on any of my action figures. *g*

  34. Margaret on 22 Mar 2008 at 2:33 pm #

Where did you all see the Peep show? On the Internet? If so, how about sharing the URL with us who haven’t seen it? I could use a good un-PC laugh today.

  35. Jane on 22 Mar 2008 at 2:40 pm #

When I was little, Peeps were delicious. Now they taste funky, but I still love to buy them and display them because they’re so cute and they have so many new colors now, like purple and blue. I love the malted, speckled eggs and the Reese’s peanut butter eggs.

  36. Paula M on 22 Mar 2008 at 4:25 pm #

What are Peeps? we don’t have them in the UK.
Cookie and DebMarlowe I am with you on the Cadbury’s mini eggs I love them. My DH loves the Cadbury’s cream eggs and the boys just love the chocolate eggs in any shape or form!!
Today we went to my mums for the day, my sister came over with her 2 boys and mum had done an Easter egg hunt for the 4 boys in her garden which they did in the snow showers(it hasn’t settled) and all had great fun.
Happy Easter to you all for tomorrow.

  37. Suzanne Enoch on 22 Mar 2008 at 5:35 pm #

Nobody’s really sure what Peeps are, Paula. *g* They have marshmallow inside, and a kind of crystalized sugar on the outside, and are usually shaped like chicks (see the blog photo), though now they also come in other holiday shapes.

  38. Aspen on 22 Mar 2008 at 5:41 pm #

Not a fan of the peeps. Could deffinetly jump on the eat a pound of chocolate day thing. When day does that holiday fall under this year?
Someone said something about black jelly beans? Blech! Jellie Bellies are good no black.
Milk chocolate, penut butter leathal combo but oh so delicious.

  39. Kathy/Cookiedough on 22 Mar 2008 at 6:06 pm #

I just got back from a combo Easter/Birthday dinner at my sis’s. She gave all of us our own Easter buckets filled to the brim with treats. She put a chocolate car in her grandson’s bucket. he pulled it out of the box and started driving it around. He’s 2.
It wasn’t until it started to melt in his hands did he realise it was to eat. he bit the driver’s head off.
He and his parents had just gotten back from an egg hunt. he came home with a basket full of 35 full-size Cadbury Easter Creme eggs.

I suggest finding a Fros smothered in chocolate or with photoshopped bunny ears on.

  40. Kathy/Cookiedough on 22 Mar 2008 at 6:08 pm #

    Karen R!
I looked for the peep show pic! hilarious!
    a gaffaw from me!

  41. Suzanne Enoch on 22 Mar 2008 at 7:05 pm #

Well, Cookiedough, I think you’ve given us a good example that we’re doing the kiddies a favor by absconding with some of the candy. I mean, what 2-year-old can eat 35 Cadbury Creme eggs and not get sick? We’re saving them from themselves, I tell you.

  42. Kate on 22 Mar 2008 at 7:36 pm #

Personally not a peeps fan. But the kids like them, so they come in the Easter baskets. I LOVE malted milk balls. They don’t taste quite the same but I still love them. My mom used to buy a bag of all black jelly beans….yuck. But she loved them!
    Happy Easter Everyone!

  43. PJane1031 on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:01 pm #

Speaking of Peeps, I came across a web site many years ago that just showed that ’someone’ has WAAAY too much time on their hands. It doesn’t matter if you like/don’t like the product, but it’s kind of entertaining!

    http://www.peepresearch.org/

    Happy Easter, Everyone!

  44. Kathy/Cookiedough on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:10 pm #

Most of the grown ups stole Hunter’s candy- except me. I hate them; and his mommy was going to throw the rest in the freezer. he’s a chocolate fiend like the rest of us. so now he’s safe! lol!

  45. Kathy/Cookiedough on 22 Mar 2008 at 9:19 pm #

Quintuplet Peep Conjoined Siblngs! Medical Miracle!
Do not watch late at night with neighbours within earshot!

Unfortunately I used to love Peeps — all colors! My fascination with them lasted until I ate wwaayy to many of them in one day!! (enough said) Chocolate bunnies never really held anything for me, probably since I eat enough chocolate anyway…

My #1 true addition is Sweetart brand jelly beans. Oh My Gosh!! They are the most divine jelly bean that there is on the market. They truly beat out JellyBellies, Starburst, etc. And the last day that you’ll find them on the market is on Easter Sunday. They are taken off the shelf at the end of the day on Sunday. My #2 is Sweetart Bunnies and Chicks. They are also really, really good.

  49. PJane1031 on 23 Mar 2008 at 10:24 am #

Kathy–a friend forwarded the link to me several years ago! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  50. BeatriceYoung on 24 Mar 2008 at 11:49 am #

Oh my GOD but do I adore Peeps! They drive me CRAZY! I love Peeps! They are my favorite candy treats (that rhymed)! Well, next to caramel-filled chocolate of course. Right now, I am trying to control myself because my boyfriend forgot to pick up his Easter basket yesterday (we love to celebrate every holiday), and it’s filled with yellow chick Peeps. It’s so hard not to rip the plastic open with my teeth. I am proud of my obsession.

  51. peggy on 24 Mar 2008 at 12:44 pm #

i love peeps.i always get extra pack on easter for myself

  52. Pesky on 27 Mar 2008 at 2:50 pm #

*blush* Well…I make up the adult’s Easter Basket so we don’t steal the kids. It gets the lindt, dove and jelly bellies in it and of course peeps. Our easter bunnies are the stover marshmallow ones and egs are the pastel peanut m&m’s.

My nephews are funny though. Jack must have the same things as Kevin, even though Jack doesn’t like chocolate…he prefers the gummy candies. So my sister has come up with minimal candy and more dvd, golf balls, etc type baskets. They get candy, a mixture of what they both like…and then they steal from the adult’s basket. :D
