Will Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day
Mar 18th 2008
Sabrina JeffriesGoddess Grins
So, did any of you drink green beer yesterday? I have to make a confession. I hate beer, green or otherwise, and you wouldn’t catch me dead with a Murphy’s Stout (even a little one like Will’s). Is it okay to have a green margarita on St. Patrick’s Day instead? Or does that make me some sort of freak?
And am I the only one who hates beer?

I’m not a beer drinker either, so I think a green margarita would be perfectly acceptable!! I think it’s keeping with the spirit of the day. Unfortunately I had to work in the evening, so couldn’t partake of the intoxicating festivities (unlike Will!! He probably had mine, so that’s fine!), not that I’m a big celebrator as it is! Thankfully I didn’t have to deal with too many of the revelers in Will’s state at work! (I know I’m fairly new on here, so for those that are curious, I’m a Public Safety Officer at a private liberal arts college in MN!)

I never could develop a taste for beer.
DebMarlowe on 18 Mar 2008 at 6:30 am #
LOL! I love Will! But I’m telling you, Sabrina, I found that ripped doll this weekend. Jane is going to love him!

I hate beer as well. Yesterday half of my office disappeared down the street to the bar, Flannigan’s, at about 11 am. We didn’t see most of them for the rest of the day. Just so everyone knows. Flannigan’s is an irish bar in Dublin, OH so every year they do it up big. Me, I don’t really drink and I had wedding stuff to do last night so I was good and worked my 8 hours. So I really didn’t do much for St Patrick’s Day. Plus my back was hurting pretty bad.

LOL. What a great comic! I love the new toys!
Actually, I’m a fan of beer. My DH brews his own at home and maybe someday we’ll open a brewery. On the other hand I hate wine.
DebMarlowe on 18 Mar 2008 at 7:04 am #
Forgot to say: I do like beer. Especially beer with flavor, like Guinness. And I do love me a Black and Tan!
Margaret on 18 Mar 2008 at 7:09 am #
I’m not a beer lover either. I like one or two sips of ice cold beer when I have Mexican food. But it gets warm quickly and loses whatever it was that made me drink it. I prefer iced tea. Not green, please.
I love the on-going soap opera of Will and Jane. I see that she is dressed for St. Pat’s day. So, what’s her problem with the stout? And who is Raji? Have we seen him before or did I miss an installement?
Sabrina, if the writing gig doesn’t work out, you have your future made in the world of comic strips.
FreshEChelle on 18 Mar 2008 at 7:15 am #
Raji sure looks wasted. His stuffing can’t hold his liquor.
I’ve never tasted beer because the smell is so repulsive to me. Now, wine and hard liquor, keep ‘em coming.
elsiehogarth on 18 Mar 2008 at 7:44 am #
I have never aquired a taste for beer…the smell…the taste…the foam etc but Grey Goose vodka and white Barcardi rum is a whole other story.
Freedom Writer on 18 Mar 2008 at 7:46 am #
I’m not a big fan of beer, and if I drink too much of it I get an upset stomach. If I had celebrated St. Pat’s day with spirits I would have much preferred a green margarita or perhaps some good Irish Whiskey. Instead we celebrated by dining on Corned Beef and Irish Soda Bread. DH loves to bake bread.
Sandy "Snik" White on 18 Mar 2008 at 8:02 am #
In a past life I was a big fan of the beer. Ice cold was preferred, but to be honest, I would drink pretty much anything at one point. Now, out of my party phase, I have given up drinking completely, and the only thing I really miss is the way I felt after one glass of Merlot. Talk about relaxing…
PJ on 18 Mar 2008 at 8:04 am #
I’m not a beer drinker but I did enjoy some yummy green daiquiries.
Kasey on 18 Mar 2008 at 8:22 am #
LOl, Sabrna. That was cute.
I am a beer drinker, but I didn’t make it out last night. I did, however, make it to McDonald’s for my shamrock shake.
KariE on 18 Mar 2008 at 8:34 am #
I do not discriminate. I like all types of beer. Brown, black, tan or green (although I have never had green, I’m sure I would like it). The only time I do drink beer is when I go out with the girls, and that has been many moons. If at home with guests it is normally wine coolers or Kahlua and cream. Has anyone tried the Jamaican Me Happy wine coolers? Yummy!
Karen Hawkins on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:06 am #
That Will is such a scamp! I love wine, enjoy frosty and fruity drinks, and tolerate beer EXCEPT with pizza. Then I loooove a frosty beverage. Unfortunately, I can’t hold my alcohol so two glasses of wine or one margarita and I’m done. I’m not even a fun drinker — I just get sleepy!
And oh, KariE, I’ve heard such good things about the Jamaican Me Happy coolers! I’ll have to try one as you’re the third person I’ve heard mention those this month.
Claudia Dain on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:36 am #
Can’t stand beer. I’m so glad I’m not alone! Wine is okay, but I could easily live without it. Give me a fruity drink anytime!
Kari, I’m a BIG Kahlua and cream girl. Love it. Kahlua and cream (called a Sombrero back then) was my first bar drink and I can down them one after the other. I think the cream must dull the effect of the alcohol.
Uh, yeah.
ladydawgfan on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:39 am #
Nope, you are definitely not the only one who hates beer!! Actually, I don’t care for any alcoholic drinks, including wine and champagne, so I may be a bit biased.
I’ll let others enjoy imbibing when they want. I’ll stick to my Diet Coke and my water and my “Nada Colada’s” when the mood strikes.
Karen Hawkins on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:42 am #
Back in college, before dirt was invented, I once drank One Too Many White Russians. Now the words ‘cream’ and ‘kahlua’ make me queasy.
anneriailin on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:43 am #
I’m not much of a drinker either. Not a real fan of beer, but I do drink one occasionally. My drink of preference is Capt. Morgan and diet caffeine free coke. I love those Capt. Morgan commercials.

KariE on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:44 am #
KarenH-They are good. I’ve found them hard to fine though. My local Publix doesn’t seem to carry them.
Claudia-Have you tired the French Vanilla Kahlua? Yummy!! I never get the mix right when I make my own so I am noramly buzzed by time I am done with my first drink. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing……..
amy1242 on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:51 am #
I can’t drink like I used to, either, but I love beer, wine, hard alcohol drinks. Nothing’s better after cutting the lawn on a hot day, than downing an ice cold beer. I enjoyed a pint of green beer yesterday and also had an irish coffee. Now I sound like a lush. Lol
doglady on 18 Mar 2008 at 9:53 am #
Love Will and Jane! Too funny! People assume I am a Guinness drinker because I have all sorts of Guinness gear - hats, scarves, t-shirt, sleep pants, boxers -you name it. However, I don’t drink! Nothing! Nada! Too much alcoholism in my parents’ families to risk it.
However, I am a fantastic bartender, or so I have been told. My former students come to visit with ingredients in hand for my famous Mama H’s Tequila Sunrise. I also mix a mean White Russian because one of my favorite former students (works in the state house of representatives, can you tell I am proud?) loves White Russians. Karen H, the whole concept of dairy and licquor makes me queasy. Of course they all know if they drink at my house they have to hand over the keys.
No, ladies, I have to say to me beer smells like someone peed in a can or bottle so I do NOT see the attraction.
Since it has been posted I can now tell you that my novel LOST IN LOVE made the finals in the Marlene!! I am thrilled to pieces!
Claudia Dain on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:02 am #
Doglady, you and I share the same description of beer: looks like someone peed in a bottle. Blech. I wonder if beer is an acquired taste? My parents never drank beer, no one in my entire extended family drank beer, so the first time I was exposed to it was with other teens during hot summer nights. Warm, cheap beer. Maybe that was the wrong introduction?
I’m going to try French Vanilla Kahlua! Sounds dreamy. The attraction for me to Kahlua and cream is that it’s like a milkshake! Anything that even slightly resembles ice cream is going to get a double thumbs up from me. Yum!
Kim on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:10 am #
Congrats Doglady!!
I hate beer. Yuck. I’m defnitely checking out those Jamaican wine coolers. Does anyone else like that Arbor Mist fruity wine? Its like $3.50 a bottle and I love it.
Has anyone ever had Long Island Iced Tea? One time someone gave me one and I swear they were trying to poison me. And what do you call the drink that’s a vanilla milkshake with brandy?
PJ on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:14 am #
I love Kahlua and Cream. It’s really my favorite “at home” drink. Also love a couple variations - Peppermint Patty and KC Slushie. For the Peppermint Patty, just add some Peppermint Schnaaps to the Kahlua and cream. Very yummy. The KC Slushie is my summer drink. I blend Kahlua, half and half, vanilla ice cream and crushed ice.

This comic strip is such a delight, Sabrina! Love it!
And I’m fond of lighter beers sometimes. My dh was in a frat in college, so I had to learn to drink beer just to be able to party with him.
Congrats on finaling with your ms, Doglady!!! That’s so exciting. Sure hope you win!
Sabrina Jeffries on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:23 am #
Congratulations, doglady!! You must be flying!
I’m not a big drinker–partly because I’m always watching my weight (balloon up, that is *G*) so I avoid the empty calories, and partly because I don’t like the feeling of being out of control that comes from drinking. But I do occasionally like a good margarita or a nice fruity drink. I LOVE Kahlua. And I think it was Capt. Morgan’s that I recently tried with diet coke. It’s a spiced rum, right? I LOVED it! Now that’s something I could get addicted to.
But in general I probably have a drink once every month or two.
I NEVER drink beer. Ever. Yuck!
By the way, Raji was given to me by the wonderful Elsie Hogarth. You can’t tell in the pic, but his beaded adornment has the letters of his name in it. I didn’t pose it well enough for you to tell. He sits by my desk on the bed next to it, along with the teddy my agent gave me that says “congratulations” and my pirate Mickey. I’d put Pirate Mickey in a comic, too, if Disney would let me.
LauraR on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:25 am #
Congrats Doglady!
Add me to the no on beer crowd. I don’t like wine either. It reminds me too much of vinegar - even the ‘good’ stuff.
Like Margaret, I prefer iced tea, not green and not fruity. Nothing better on a hot day than a tall glass of freshly brewed iced tea!
zambonigirl on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:26 am #
Nope, not a beer drinker. I did have some Heather Cream, though, after I got back from the gym. I also had a green cupcake.
I love your little comic. It’s really the best.
Kim on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:28 am #
Sabrina–I hear you on empty calories. I used to be addicted to Starbucks, at least one a day, sometimes more. Now I’m mostly water and occasionally diet coke or tea with splenda. I wish I could be as strict with my sweets as I am with my drinks. *sigh*
Kim, who just baked a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies and will be eating some.
PJ on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:38 am #

Kim-I like the Arbor Mist wines as well. And chocolate chips cookies!!!
HelenK on 18 Mar 2008 at 10:55 am #
Ugh, I hate beer. Horrible stuff. People always say I have to get ‘used to’ the taste and I wonder why I would want to.
Now it reminds me of “Ratatouille” when Remy’s brother is telling him if he could just muscle his way paste the gag reflex a whole new culinary world would be opened to him.
No thanks.
People do look at you strangely when you tell them you can’t stand beer, it’s never bothered me, but now I just tell them I have celiac and beer is full of gluten. Another food I’ve always hated, taken off my list of edibles forever.
HelenK on 18 Mar 2008 at 11:01 am #
PS A lot of you are drinking wine coolers. Hopefully, you’re aware they are beers dressed up. They just flavor them to appeal to a different (probably female) audience. But it’s still beer as far as the ingredients and manufacture go.
I guess they used to actually be wine in the cooler, but since the 90s, have been beer/malt beverage.
Claudia Dain on 18 Mar 2008 at 11:08 am #
HelenK, really?! No wine in wine coolers? I’m stunned. Never had a wine cooler, but I’m still stunned. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with additives and sweeteners.
Julia London on 18 Mar 2008 at 11:26 am #
I am not a big beer drinker, although there is nothing better on a hot summer day than an icy cold one. I am a wino by profession.

SuzyQ on 18 Mar 2008 at 12:03 pm #
Julia, I’m right there with ya on a hot summer day. That’s about the only time I drink beer. I do admit I had a glass of green wine last night
Kari - French Vanilla Kahlua? Ohhh, I’m gonna have to try some of that. My favorite Kahlua drink is a Toasted Almond, preferrably frozen.
Doglady - Whoo Hoo! Congrats!!!!
HelenK on 18 Mar 2008 at 12:09 pm #
Claudia, yeah, when I was in the Air Force, wine coolers were just hitting the market in a huge way and everyone was into them including tons of girls who “hated beer”. So I tried a couple and they were OK, but I still didn’t care for them - they had an aftertaste that reminded me of beer (now I know thats because of the celiac in me reacting to the gluten - but then I just didn’t know) so I started reading a bottle and - What do you know - beer.
A little bit of research and you realize what marketing can do for a product. LOL
Now maybe at a local bar, if you get a “wine cooler” it might actually be with wine and sugar made up there, but in the bottles you buy in the stores, it’s dressed up beer.
Sabrina Jeffries on 18 Mar 2008 at 12:24 pm #
Green wine??? I didn’t know there WAS such a thing!
Karen Hawkins on 18 Mar 2008 at 12:34 pm #
They make FRENCH VANILLA KAHLUA? Wow. That’s too good to be true. Maybe I should give it another shot. But just one. ONLY one.

And Sabrina, Captain Morgans is the best. The very best. The bestest of the best. Oh yeah, baby!!!

I really can’t stand beer either, due to an unfortunate game of Caps the first time I ever went drinking. But give me a good paralyzer any day! I suppose they could be dyed green, but I was just at home last night and didn’t celebrate at all.
colinfirthfan on 18 Mar 2008 at 12:56 pm #
Hate beer too! I love fruity margaritas though. I have had strawberry (my fave), watermelon, mango, raspberry and guava margaritas so far!
Not a wine drinker either. I’ll drink a super sweet white wine though!
I love Kahlua and icecream. YUM YUM YUM!
Congratulations Doglady!
SuzyQ on 18 Mar 2008 at 1:07 pm #
Sabrina - just add a little green food coloring to white wine. Yeah, I know, wine enthusiasts are cringing about now. I made the kids green Sprite last night so I thought, what the heck!
Kasey on 18 Mar 2008 at 1:08 pm #
I like beer, but I don’t like wine coolers. They taste okay about for about a third of the bottle and then after that I can stand the stuff. I would rather drink regular beer.
My favorite drinks are daquaris. I had an awesome strawberry banana one in Boston, most places don’t mike the strawberry and banana, but I have had a few places do it for me. Yummm!
KariE on 18 Mar 2008 at 1:11 pm #
Oh yes KarenH!! French Vanilla and even Hazelnut. I’m not a nut lover so I haven’t tried the Haselnut for fear I won’t like it and get stuck with the whole bottle.
For the people that have tried the green beer, does it taste the same just colored? (I honestly have no idea)

I’m not a beer drinker, either. I did indulge with corned beef and potatoes last night. Mom cooked them. I left the cabbage for the rest of the family. Yuck. Raji in the comic looks like he had some cooked cabbage with his beer. *g*

I don’t mind the taste of beer. Especially with pizza. However, if I drink two - and thats maybe once or twice a year - my face goes numb. I’m just not a drinker. A highball at Christmas and maybe 3-4 glasses of wine a year. I prefer to be aware of my surroundings and don’t like the feeling of not being in total control. Weird, huh?
Karen Hawkins on 18 Mar 2008 at 4:29 pm #
Btw, Modern Marvels on the history channel had an episode dedicated to bear making (those lusty monks were apparently the ones who were the real brew masters at first) and then another dedicated to Whiskey (AGAIN those lusty darn monks were involved — again!) and they were both fascinating.

Congrats to Doglady! GO GIRL!!
Sabrina, awesome cartoon
I’ll drink an occasional beer if the food is right and it’s a party. I can tell you from experience though, that “Beer on whiskey, might risky; whiskey on beer, never fear” is TRUE.
Getting the order correct can make the difference between a Very Bad Experience with Black Russians and a No Morning Effect Whatsover Experience. Yep.
evlqn on 18 Mar 2008 at 6:03 pm #
Even when I drank I hated beer, it tastes as nasty as it smells. However it’s great for making brauts, just cook the brauts in beer and then grill them. I don’t like wine either and it really makes me a little sad sometimes. A very dear friend is the head red wine maker at King Estates Winery and she brought out her own wine last year Journey Red. Everyone but me has tried it and loves it. Well I did have some when it was still just grape juice but I think it loses something in the translation.
Everyone stayed home last night and watched Dancing With The Stars, we are all in various stages of sick.

I DO NOT drink beer at all. I’d very happily drink nothing, as opposed to beer. Right before commencement in college, I got to a party late, so there was only beer left. It was funny because at practice that day, I got a little sunburnt, so my face was pinkish. I had nothing to drink - but when I left a lot of people asked me if I was ok to go. [Well, it was really late- and to be fair, they were asking *everyone* - a lot of people stayed there, and most of the people had had a *lot* of alcohol.] I was just amused by all the “Are you ok?” and “Are you *SURE*”’s I got.
I went to dinner last night, and there was karaoke - and the cutest super old guy sang a song - it was the best thing ever.

Ann, I don’t find that weird at all. I don’t like losing control myself. I’m something of a control freak, in fact, and drinking just doesn’t go well with that.
colinfirthfan, I LOVE Kahlua and ice cream. And amaretto and ice cream. And Grand Marnier and ice cream. I think I can safely say I like just about any liqueur and ice cream!
