Tripping in Time

Sabrina JeffriesGoddess Readers Speak Out
Going through some of my keepers the other day, I came across two of my old favorites: Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, and A Knight in Shining Armor, by Jude Devereaux. It reminded me how much I like time-travel, not only in books, but in movies like Back to the Future, Somewhere in Time, and the TV show Charmed.
Not everyone does, though. Some scoff at the methods of travel (a De Lorean? Really?). Some take issue with the physics (you should see the intense discussion of the physics of time travel at Wikipedia). Some just can’t suspend their disbelief.
What about you? Just for fun, here’s a little time-travel poll:
1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
2) If you enjoy reading time-travel romance, which ones do you prefer:
a. Where a character comes forward from the past to our present.
b. Where a character goes forward from our time to the future.
c. Where a character goes back in time from our time.
d. Any of the above.
3) Does it bother you if the modern person chooses to stay in the past with his/her true love (as in Kate and Leopold)?
4) What was the last time-travel romance you read?

I’ve tried to read them but didn’t enjoy them. My girls and their friends tried to force feed me “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon. They were horrified as only teens can be that I couldn’t finish it. Didn’t hate it. Just felt nothing for the story/characters. I have tried other time-travel romance with varying degrees of success. I guess the author & I just didn’t connect thru no fault of either. I know the Outlander series was wildly popular.
But I loved Teresa Medeiros’s “Breath of Magic” & have read it more than once. And I enjoyed a couple of others whose titles escape me at the moment. Oh yes. H. G. Wells “The Time Machine”. Love both book & movie. So, I guess I’m not a staunch fan of time-travel romances and don’t pick them automatically off the shelf.
I can’t remember the last one I read unless it was “Breath of Magic”. I do like them better than vampire novels. I just can’t get into those at all. Funny what touches us and what doesn’t.

Terrific blog, Sabrina! One of my favorite topics! I love time travel romances. Absolutely adore them.
1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
I’ve read many time travels and I love them. Deveraux’s A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR is my all-time favorite but I’ve enjoyed offerings from many authors. Karen Marie Moning writes fabulous time travels and Janet Chapman’s Highlanders series is my current fav.
2) If you enjoy reading time-travel romance, which ones do you prefer:
A and C
3) Does it bother you if the modern person chooses to stay in the past with his/her true love (as in Kate and Leopold)?
I wouldn’t say it bothers me but I prefer the stories where they stay in modern times.
4) What was the last time-travel romance you read?
Janet Chapman’s SECRETS OF THE HIGHLANDER.

I never liked TT romances, unless they end like AKISA. To me, that ending was perfect.
I have a hard time believing that any contemporary character would accept staying in a past with no indoor plumbing, no TV, no computers, no airplanes, among other things. Even for twue wub.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME is the last TT I read. Reread it a few weeks ago and I had forgotten how especially well-written the ending is.
FreshEChelle on 08 Mar 2008 at 8:17 am #
What a good, unexpected topic. BTW, just finished 2 of your books - your latest and NSAS and will be reading more soon. You don’t right the typical Regency. I really like your background stories along with the main plot. Thanks and keep ‘em coming.
Time Travel - I’ve read soemthing by Robin Schone and Son of the Morning by Linda Howard. I can suspend a lot of reality but not enough to really enjoy time travel stories. Funny, I’m have no trouble believing the story when the h/h have simultaneous orgasms but time travel gets a “yeah, right”. I’m a hypocrite.
MizMacgyver on 08 Mar 2008 at 8:57 am #
I can always suspend my disbelief when reading romance.
I have read several time travel and I like them all. Nora Roberts Time and Again, one stayed in the past (this time period being the past in this case) and one went to the future.
I love Karen Marie Moning’s and Janet Chapman’s time travels. You have to keep in mind both are those delectable Scotsmen and I just can’t get enough of those.

What a fun topic!
I love time travel stories, but not all time travel stories. I was another one who couldn’t find the joy in the Outlander series. There really is no predicting what moves you and what doesn’t.
What was the name of that movie with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves? Time After Time? I LOVE that movie.
Lisa H on 08 Mar 2008 at 9:20 am #
1. Yes, I read Knight in Shining Armor, but I wasn’t overjoyed with the ending. I wanted the actual hero, not one of his decendents. I too was given Outlander but could not get into it after the first few chapters. My policy is life is too short to read books I don’t enjoy.
2. They are not my favorite genre, but if I knew the author, I’d be willing to try one.
3. I don’t care which character changes time, as long as they end up together.
4. The last and only time travel I read was Knight in Shining Armor.
I have no problem letting my imagination go into another world where TT is possible. When I am reading a novel, I am not looking for reality.
It sounds like I might like “Breath of Magic” as I do love Teresa Medieros- thanks for the reccomendation Margaret!

Gave the book vendor hell at Wal-Mart because LSRL was not there! He HATES to see me coming. Called my local bookstore and she is ordering several because I intend to put it on my Pam Says Read List. She has several of us experts in certain genres post a list of what we recommend in her store.
I am not crazy about time travel. I read romance to escape and I get WAY to much reality in our time. I do read them occasionally.
I prefer the ones where the modern person goes back in time, not the other way around. I have problems with today. I don’t read about other people’s problems adapting. I was born in the wrong time!
The modern person HAS to stay back in time for me to enjoy the book. Loved Kate and Leopold.
Breath of Magic is one of my favorites. I recently read ALWAYS MINE by Sophia Johnson. It was quite lovely.
Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Mar 2008 at 9:33 am #
Well, to be fair, Fresh, simultaneous orgasms are not technically impossible. Right now, time travel is.
Glad you enjoyed your first two books by me! Yes, I’ve always thought I didn’t write the typical Regency. Don’t know if that’s bad or good, but it’s who I am!
MizMacGyver, ooh, yes, I liked those two Nora Roberts! I have them on my keeper shelf!
Claudia, that’s Somewhere in Time. There’s actually a website dedicated to it!
Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Mar 2008 at 9:38 am #
Lisa H, plenty of people didn’t like the end of KISA. Like Seton, I was one of the people who thought it ended just fine, but that ending is always controversial with readers.
doglady, thanks for giving the vendor hell! Has ANYONE seen my book in a Wal-mart? They were supposed to show up this week. And thanks for recommending the book! You’re a doll!

1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
I’ve read many but my absolute favorite is Jude Deveraux’s A Knight In Shining Armor.
2) If you enjoy reading time-travel romance, which ones do you prefer:
D, although A is my absolute favorite especially when it’s a male. I find it very amusing to read of a story where the male is afraid of cars and microwaves and such.
3) Does it bother you if the modern person chooses to stay in the past with his/her true love (as in Kate and Leopold)?
No it doesn’t bother me.
4) What was the last time-travel romance you read?
I actually can’t remember the last tiime travel I read. Can anyone recommend a good one?
Claudia Dain on 08 Mar 2008 at 9:51 am #
Thanks for reminding me of the name, Sabrina! That was a fantastic TT story.
I liked A Knight/Armor, though I did have to do a mental adjustment to embrace the ending. I thought it worked.
DebMarlowe on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:09 am #
I do like a good time travel and I really enjoyed the Outlander Books that I have read. Great writing. But I’m not caught up, and don’t know when I will find the time!
I also liked AKISA, but waffled over the ending. My head understood it, but my heart was going NOOOO!
Funny, my dh LOVES TT movies. He’ll watch his favorites over and over. Millennium? Man, I can practically quote that movie.
Paula M on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:28 am #
To answer the question, yes I have read time travel romances and yes I did enjoy it it was the Outlander series form Diana Gabaldon I really enjoyed the series(in England it the Cross stitch series!!). I loved all of her books and it didn’t bother me that Claire chose to stay in the past with Jamie. It did take me a while to get into this series but i did enjoy and I found some of the books a bit hard going in places.
Margaret on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:33 am #
>It sounds like I might like “Breath of Magic” as I do love Teresa Medieros- >thanks for the reccomendation Margaret! - LisaH
LisaH, it’s sort of Bewitched Meets Hunky Geek. LOL The heroine is a Salem era witch who comes forward in time to NYC (I think). “Touch of Enchantment” is about their daughter.
Ooh! How could I forget Nora Roberts? Does she write bad books? My fave series is the Chesapeake quartet. Most satisfying and not a time traveller in the bunch.
Glad to hear I’m not the only one who didn’t finish Outlander. The kids had me thinking there was something wrong with me. LOL I agree with LisaH that life is to short to force myself to read books I’m not enjoying. I recycle them to the library donation box. But my keeper shelf sags anyway.
Lisa H on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:34 am #
Oh Sabrina - your comment to FResh - LOL!
Are you contemplating writing a TT, or just a fan?
My WalMart (Elmira, NY) does not yet have your book- the nerve!
Lisa H on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:38 am #
Oh Margaret - I think Hunky geeks are the best!
elsiehogarth on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:39 am #
A Knight in Shining Armor/Jude Deveraux is a classic. TeresaMedeiros-Breath of Magic is wonderful and the Outlander series/Diana Gabaldon is fantastic. Jamie is, to me, the sexiest hero of all time.
I love Janet Chapman…those are some mighty fine Viking men. So are Sandra Hills. Those are very funny books.
Karen Marie Moning’s are my ultimate favorites. I have re-read that series of books so many times that I have triple copies of them: one for traveling, one in a box as keepers for prosperity and the one to re-read anytime I’m in the mood. I wouldn’t mind staying in past if I could do it like in Karen’s books where you can travel back and get chocolates, fem products, have parents visit etc.
RachelG on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:41 am #
I love to read time travels. If someone comes forward or goes back, I love them both. My favs of all time are Son Of The Morning and A Knight In Shining Armor.
I hated Kate and Leopold. Meg Ryan was so cold in that movie. Also, it turned out that Stuart, Kate’s former boyfriend whom she dated and had sex with for four years, is really her great great grand son. Yuck!
amy1242 on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:50 am #
TT is one of the reasons I got into romance in the first place, well that, and I was recovering from surgery and picked up a random book to take my mind off my woe’s. I don’t remember the first one, but I’ve been reading them ever since. I love the way the authors weave past into present and present into past. I imagine, as an author, you’d have to get your mind set in a whole other way of thinking to make them work. Complicated, fun, interesting and humorous situations can arise at just about every turn of the page. I read all kinds of romance, I’m not stuck on any one type or time setting, but TT holds a special place for me. It’s what got me started reading again and brought me through a dark phase in my life. Sabrina, are you thinking of writing one? I’m excited about the prospect! I’d be the first in line at our local bookseller!
Julia London on 08 Mar 2008 at 10:58 am #
I am not a big fan. I don’t dislike them, but I can read one and that does me for a long, long time. I loved Knight in Shining Armor. I read Time Traveler’s Wife and found it intriguing, but a little creepy in places. I read Outlander to see what all the fuss was about. I loved Jamie!
It seems I have read more of them than I thought.
FreshEChelle on 08 Mar 2008 at 11:07 am #
Sabrina, very funny! I’m still putting them in the same category as time travel despite the biological possibility.
JackieToo on 08 Mar 2008 at 11:09 am #
I’m probably one of the few people on the planet that didn’t like Deveraux’s KISA, but it was because of the ending.
I enjoy time travel romance no matter which time the couple ends up in as long as they end up together (reincarnation doesn’t count!). After all, being together happily ever after is the point of romance, right?
If one of them stays in the past though it does seem like it would change the future. They know about the future and it would be hard not to prepare everyone for what’s coming. Although Kate and Leopold handles that well, I think. But then again - you must admit - Hugh Jackman any time, any where is a GOOD thing!!
Kathy/Cookiedough on 08 Mar 2008 at 11:17 am #
odd, I love time travel in my movies but not in my books.
never thought about that before.
I like straight up modern or regency romance.
or archaeological thrillers.
JackieToo on 08 Mar 2008 at 11:22 am #
RachelG - I didn’t remember about that awful genealogical glitch from K&A. :Þ
I, too, tried the Outlander series but just couldn’t get into it. But I’m also in the minority with Gone with the Wind - couldn’t stand it! (Yes, I know that’s not a TT; just an example of my out-of-sync-with-the-rest-of-the-world likes and dislikes. :D)
Laidybyrd on 08 Mar 2008 at 12:15 pm #
I enjoy time travel stories. Perhaps it’s because I only read sci-fi for so many decades before I discovered romance, but I have no problem suspending my disbelief. All the ones mentioned here were good. The last one I read was Nora Robert’s Time Was, just last week (I got it at the library sale). True, not all time travel stories are good ones, but not all of any genre are good. I really enjoy the learning aspect of the person who is out of their own time.
Aimee on 08 Mar 2008 at 12:28 pm #
Tried to read the Outlander books, but I just couldn’t do it.
MOST time travel is just hard for me to read. If the hero/heroine is going back in time, I can usually read it (even if I don’t love it) but forward? Not gonna happen.
I’ve read Karen Marie Moning, and for some reason the way she writes it was waaaay better than ok, and Robin Schone’s “Awaken My Love” was very good too.
My reading roots are fantasy, but not sci-fi… Guess that’s why I prefer the sword to the spaceship LOL
Fun topic!

I’ve never read a TT, doesn’t really appeal to me, at least not in the written form. I do enjoy TT movies though, it must be a visual thing for me.
I’m a big Back to the Future fan (seen them more times than I can count) And I love the Somewhere in Time movie, It’s ssooooo romantic.
Sabrina, both our Walmarts finally got your book in this past Wednesday. I have it on the top of my TBR pile.
Kasey on 08 Mar 2008 at 1:43 pm #
I’ve read a couple time travel romance novels, but I have a hard time geting into them. Which is weird because I LOVE the Back to the Future series and I heven enjoyed Kate and Leopold. So for some reason time travel makes more sense to me on the big screen than it does in a romance novel. I think it is because science fiction movies appeal to me, but when it shows up in my romance novel I am not as ready to accept the storyline. I’m not sure why…maybe like ct009ct says, it must be a visual thing.
Gannon on 08 Mar 2008 at 1:50 pm #
I’m a huge fan of time travels! The Outlander series is one of my faves–I’ve even convinced my husband to read these. A Knight In Shining Armor is on my keeper shelf, and even though it wasn’t the ending I really wanted, it worked!
PJ recommended Janet Chapman’s Highlanders series, which I bought when we were at CR this weekend. I also love Karen Marie Moning’s MacKeltars. They are very HOT Higlanders!
Kay on 08 Mar 2008 at 3:15 pm #
JackieToo, I just reread GWTW. OMG, how AWFUL. I read it for the story arc of two characters over time and it was hard to complete. I HATE all of the main characters.
I like some time travel romances, and alternative history books, too. If they are done well, they are so exciting.
ladydawgfan on 08 Mar 2008 at 4:23 pm #
I love TT’s. In fact, AKISA was NOT the first that I read. I was introduced to the genre by Constance O’Day Flannery and her book “Timeless Passion.” I was hooked from the get-go!!
BTW, I, too, could not get into the Outlander series, but not because of the books themselves. I couldn’t get past the use of first person perspective. It is one of my biggest pet peeves, and the one thing guaranteed to make me return a book to the shelf, regardless of the author.
Sabrina, if you are thinking of writing a TT, which I think would be a HUGE success like the rest of your books, please, for the love of God and all that is Holy, I beg of you, DON’T use first person narrative!!!!
ladydawgfan on 08 Mar 2008 at 4:25 pm #
Okay, maybe that was a bit selfish of me to say that!! But I reeeeeally can’t stand first person and I would hate like ANYTHING to miss a Sabrina book!!!

Oh,oh, oh! There’s a WONDERFUL time travel/recalled past lives book by Sharon and Tom Curtis. It’s a short story and oh my gosh, did it pack an emotional wallop! I LOVED that story.
I also love Karen Marie Moning’s work. She is SUPERB! I don’t really have a favorite, but they are resonate and have the sexiest Alpha-ish historical Scotsmen EVAH!
Great topic, Sabrina!

Hi
I love tt. Lynn Kurland is a wonderful author for this. I have read all of her stuff. Another fave is Karen Marie Moning. I prefer modern travel back or past travel forward but nothing into the future from now. Just can’t wrap my mind around those.
I prefer that they end up together doesn’t matter which time period to me. Don’t really like the descendant thing either….just feels jipped.
Last one I read was A Garden in the Rain - Lynn Kurland. Stuck in frigid land so I am rereading a lot of books.
Wonderful topic! Thanks for asking.

Funny, but I don’t care for time travel books but I love time travel on TV and in movies! Loved Kate and Leo. Loved the recently extinct Journeyman series, too, even though it got panned by the critics.
And Kate, Lynn Kurland is a friend, so I’ll pass on your praise. I’m sure she’ll be thrilled.

1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
I love Knight in Shining Armor.
2) If you enjoy reading time-travel romance, which ones do you prefer:
a. Where a character comes forward from the past to our present.
c. Where a character goes back in time from our time.
I love history so it has to incorporate history.
3) Does it bother you if the modern person chooses to stay in the past with his/her true love (as in Kate and Leopold)?
Not at all. I would stay in the past if it was my true love. If I’m willing to move to California than I’m willing to move to the past.
4) What was the last time-travel romance you read?
I don’t know. One by Nora Roberts I think.
Karen Rose on 08 Mar 2008 at 6:31 pm #
RachelG - I too, loved SON OF THE MORNING by Linda Howard. It’s my favorite of hers. I like time travel that’s science-based and Black Niall is on the top of my Alpha Hero list! (And that scene in the dungeon, oooh baby.)
My favorite tt is TIMELINE by Crighton. I love the 3-D fax explanation and how Crighton can suck you in and make you believe. I remember reading that book (and me an ex-physics teacher) and thinking, “Wow, that’s so cool. That could work.” Then, “Heeeey. No it can’t.” But it was still cool to be caught in that fantasy for just a little while.
There was also this Lindsay Wagner TV movie back in the 70’s? 80’s? When she’s walking along a road and all of the sudden goes back in time and meets the evil Linda Gray (from Dallas). Anybody else seen that movie?
I like it when they stay in the past, Sabrina. Fun topic!

1) I love time travel books. I especially loved A Knight in Shining Armor and Outlander. They are two of my favorite books.
2) I love most any time travel books, except for those that bring characters from the present into the future.
3) I don’t care where the people end up, just as long as they end up together.
4) The last time travel book that I read was A Knight in Shining Armor. (I’ve read that one a few times actually. It never gets old!) I haven’t really read any new time travel books lately, I think that I’ll have to check out some of the titles that were mentioned earlier.

Sorry, y’all, my chapter meeting was today, and I was the speaker so I had to go.
We tend to do an all-day thing, so I just got home. Ack!
Will comment as soon as I’ve read everything.
As for whether I’m planning to write a TT–I’m always planning to write a variety of things. That’s why I ask questions. Why? Would you read one if I did?
Malady on 08 Mar 2008 at 8:46 pm #
Hi, girls… Great topic.
I couldnt name one book… but theres a great little Australian movie, not really a romance… but a 80’s or early 90’s sydney girl gos back to 1800’s. she falls in love but it cannot be … and ends up with a decendent. Its called “Playing beatie bow”
I love time travel romances… Im fine with futuristic time travel ie. warped ahead in time mainly because I like sci fi a fair bit too. And a man absolutly fascinated by Tv/ebay is great.
I find that I like staying in the past better in movies. as I never want to use a pit toilet again(camping) I dont see why anyone else would too.
As i said couldnt name one…
And I have a Boyfriend and going to TAFE (tech) now so Ive been busy of late
Sabrina Jeffries on 08 Mar 2008 at 8:46 pm #
Well, it seems as if more people have liked them than I realized. Huh. Although I do think it’s partly the books–Karen Marie Moning is vastly popular (though I haven’t read her yet), and AKISA seems to be a big favorite. I do love Jamie, although like Deb Marlowe I haven’t been able to keep up with the series. It’s hard to carve out time for books that are so long!
Claudia and I were talking at the meeting today about a time-travel movie we both liked, Time after Time (she had the right title but not for the movie she was describing). I’d seen that one, too, and loved it–it was about Jack the Ripper coming forward in time in H.G. Wells time machine, to escape capture. Then Wells comes forward, too, to stop Jack the Ripper. I loved it! It came out in ‘79, but I’ve remembered it after all these years.

I’m picky about all of my book choices. I do like some TT books Knight in Shining Armor being a fav. But I think of all my favorite TT authors it would be Sandra Hill, her Viking books are so blasted funny.
I’m okay with them staying past, present, or future as long as it is together.
I couldn’t get into Diana Gabaldon either.
Last one I read was Down and Dirty
Malady on 08 Mar 2008 at 9:46 pm #

1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
Yes I’ve read lots. Karen Marie Moning is a favorite as well as the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
2) If you enjoy reading time-travel romance, which ones do you prefer:
I like d. Any of the above
3) Does it bother you if the modern person chooses to stay in the past with his/her true love (as in Kate and Leopold)?
nope - whatever serves the story
4) What was the last time-travel romance you read?
Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler on audiobook. The reader added to the enjoyment.
I figure that TT is a genre and all that matters to me is whether I enjoy it or not. Unlike Fresh I have a problem accepting all the simultaneous orgasms that seem to be so widespread in what’s written.
Santa on 09 Mar 2008 at 1:38 am #
I’ve tried and tried but I just can’t get into TT books. I’ve tried AKISA, I’ve tried Outlander - nada! And even though I adore Teresa Mederios I’ve never read ‘Touch of Magic’ as a matter of fact I’m pretty sure it’s the only one from her backlist that I haven’t snatched up!
I do love watching movies that involve TT like ‘Somewhere In Time’ and ‘Kate and Leopold’ and for the record if staying back in time included Hugh Jackman I’m pretty sure I’d even forgo indoor plumbing.
Wouldn’t you?
Laurie G on 09 Mar 2008 at 6:42 am #
In addition to the above mentioned authors, I enjoyed Linda Lael Millers’ Here & Then & There & Now going back to the wild, wild west! Also, A Little Bit of Teas by Joan Johnston…a girl from the old west ends up in present day Texas.
It really depends on my mood…although I seem to relate more to going back in history vs forward into outer space.
It really doesn’t bother me if the character for goes the present to go back for love.
The last one I read was Wrapped in Wishes by Olga Bicos.
Dina on 09 Mar 2008 at 12:06 pm #
I love all TT movies and books.
I would stay in the past in if it made me happy, like Kate and Leopold and Timeline.

1) Have you ever read a time-travel romance? Did you like it? If not, why not?
I like the idea of TT romance, but have yet to find one that works for me (bookwise). I’ll have to try TM. I am probably one of the few people in the world that did not like AKISA, at all. I never got past chapter 5.
2) d. Any of the above. - Check
3) Nope, I LOVE the K&L ending… plus the whole past is the future twist was very cool. (I suppose it helps that sometimes I feel like I was born 200 years too late)
4) Uhhh, I don’t remember.
Sabrina- You should write a TT. I have a feeling I would love it!!!

Julia, I too read the Time Traveler’s Wife. I agree - it was a little creepy in parts. But quite interesting otherwise.

2) i’ll really read anything so long as its written well.
3) if thats what it takes to have a HEA then i’m all for it
4) i cant remember but my fav non romance once were Time and Again and From Time to Time by Jack Finney.
Fresh, they are most certainly possible.

I loved them - but they have to sorta realistic… Like dealing with the not so pretty side of being ‘back in time’… I have read & reread the Outlander books… but I’m also a history buff which makes it an interesting read even without the characters interplaying.. The day-to-day living that goes on - dirt floors, unknown fevers, superstitons of the times..
Same way with the ones where the character come forward — dealing with the modern world… What we consider normal - is magic to them & if I tried to explain to someone from the past — I sure couldn’t adequately explain how mobile phones or landlines work, the internet, a car, where the food comes from..
But I certainly do enjoy you all and your body of work!! Keep it up!!!
Thanks!
