Books!
Jan 5th 2008
Julia LondonOn Writing!
One of my new year’s resolutions is to read more. I don’t know about you goddesses, but when I am in the middle of writing a book, I have a hard time reading more than a couple of books a month—I think because my eyes are tired after a full day in front of the computer and I am just tired of reading after essentially reading all day.
But nothing refills me and rejuvenates my mind more than reading, so this year, I have resolved to read a book a week, no matter what. So far, so good!I am about to finish my first book of 2008: An Arsonist’s Guide to Writer’s Homes in
I noticed, when cleaning out my bookshelves over the holidays, that I don’t read a lot of romance anymore. I still love romance, but I think after writing it all day I am ready for something different, something I can relax with and not over-analyze, as I tend to do romance. I generally read mainstream fiction, books that are character driven as opposed to plot-driven, and I don’t read a lot of thrillers because blood and gore makes me queasy (sorry, Karen Rose!). I also belong to a bookclub, so I have to read that book each month. I have one rule: if I start a book and can’t get into it, I put it down. Life is too short to make myself read a book that doesn’t grab me from the get-go. There are millions of other books just waiting to be read!
- What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile?
- Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory?
- How many books do you read a month
- Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like
- Any suggestions for books for my February reading list?
- Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection?

1. I just read THE GOLDEN COMPASS, after I had seen the movie. I really liked it. Next, I an going to reread CONTACT. I read it for the first time several years ago. A friend brought it up over lunch today, so I went to the library and picked it up. After that, I will read the SUBTLE KNIFE (next book after GC)
2. Life is way too short. If it doesn’t get me in the first 5 pages, I’m done. The only exception is if my kids want me to read it, then I’ll slog through it.
3. It depends on how crazy life is. Anywhere from 2 to 6.
4. I also read SF, some fantasy, mysteries, historical fiction, “literary fiction” and anything YA that my kids liked and want me to read.
5. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. I reread it every year.
6. THE PACT?

TBR?
I just read Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning. I had resisted the urge to get it because so many reviewers were up in arms saying how it was so not what they expected. Karen wrote those fantastically hot Highlander series (Dark Highlander, immortal highlander etc etc).
I got the paperback of Darkfever and fell instantly under its spell. Yes it is not as steamy or whatever as her other books. But it was refreshing in its Notness. The focus is not a romantic relationship. There is sexual tension between the leads but the focus lies elsewhere.
I immediately picked up the sequal Bloodfever and now eagerly await the third Faefever.
I guess that was 1. Here goes 2. I discard books I can’t get through. I may give them a second glance but after that they are outta there. There is no reason wasting my valuable time or space on my shelf for something I will never get into.
3. Depends. I am addicted to reading and read constantly. On trips between classes (during classes). 7+

5. Read Darkfever. You might enjoy it. I did.
6. An Arsonist’s Guide to Writer’s Homes in New England by Brock Clarke You put it at the top of your list.

1. The last book I got done reading was The Rogue by Celeste Bradley. I actually just finished with it about half an hour ago. I liked it alot.
2. I usually read a book all the way through. It is just the way I am even though there have been a few that I put a bookmark in it about halfway through and read something else and came back to it after I finished the other book just so I could get through it.
3. Depends on how many orders I have at the time but I usually average 5 or so a week so… 20 or so? I’m a fast reader, what can I say?
4. Even though I am a total historical romance and paranormal romance geek, I love reading biographies about historical figures, historical tracts, 19th century lit, and anything dealing with historical garments.

5. Uhmm… since I can’t very well tell you to read yourself or any of the other goddesses, whom I am sure you already do read, I would have to recommend The Prospect Before Her: A History of Women in Western Europe 1500-1800 by Olwen Hufton. It is a really good read for starters and it would more than likely give you more research to draw from when you are writing. It also has delightful chapters like Kept Mistresses and Common Strumpets as well as a chapter about female authors from period called Corresponding Gentlewomen, Shameless Scribblers, Drudges of the Pen and the Emergence of the Critic.

6. I’m going to say Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

1.What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile?
A Hunger Like no Other-by Kresley Cole
2.Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory?
hmm yes i think i do feel compelled to finish the book, but admittedly if there are parts i don’t like then i just skim read them.. :S
3.How many books do you read a month
i can never be certain about this, because some books take a much longer time to engage me, and thus a much longer time for me to finish..so i guess about 12-15books a month
4.Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like
i generally read romance, sometimes i read books outside of the genre, like Melina Marchetta’s books, inevitably the books all have some smidgen of romance in them

5.Any suggestions for books for my February reading list?
i would actually recommened Melina Marchetta’s books, there are only 3
-On the Jellicoe Road
-Looking for Alibrandi
-Saving Francesca
they all deal with some really poignant issues that affect australian society, which is why i think her books are really interesting
6.Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection?
The Pact -by Jodi Picoult OR Dakota Home -by Debbie Macomber

1.What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile?
Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas (Its wonderful!)
Up next is The Warrior by Kinley MacGregor
2.Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory?
I’ll put a book down but I will go back and try it again. I get in book “moods”.
3.How many books do you read a month?
On a good month 12-15, on a bad month 1.
4.Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like?
I’m definitely outside! I love mysteries, suspense, thrillers, etc. What I call boy books. And I adore Karen Rose and am impatiently awaiting Scream For Me!
5.Any suggestions for books for my February reading list?
YES! The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy. It funny as all get out. It hits stores Feb. 5.
6.Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection?
I’m going with Eat, Pray, Love.

1. The last book read was “Truly Yours” by Barbara Metzger. I liked it a lot but not as much as some of her others.
2. I’ma Life is Short and Getting Shorter reader. I do give a book till page 25. If I’m not grabbed by then, it’s off to the library donation box. Somebody else may love it.
4. Next is an old friend. “Picture Miss Seeton” by Heron Carvic. I loved this series until it got to be boring while trading on “Miss Seeton’s” popularity. Carvic was long dead by then.
5. More books than I want to count or know about. LOL
. I like words. However, I’m currently heavily into romance. I like mysteries of most sorts. Read all of Agatha Christie. Ngaio Marsh is one of my faves.
5. Sorry. No suggestions come to mind this early.
cail on 05 Jan 2008 at 8:30 am #
1. i’m actually mid book right now: Ladies and Gentlemen: the Bronx is Burning. It’s a history of NYC and Baseball in the late 70’s. Last book i read was Lady Rogue by Suzanne and next up is one of Kathryn Caskies books.
2. Depends on the book and how long it takes to read. I think I put down one in my recent memory. I usually don’t pick up books i think I won’t like.
3. Depends on the kind. Usually about 10 Romance, one history, and one reread of a classic. I usually only get to read on my commute or when the BF decides to play over an hr of video games.
4. i LOVE history books told in a narrative. I’m really partial to baseball books, and stories about (real life) pirates
5. The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty, although i’m sure you won’t read it.
6. Going with Eat Pray Love as well.
Gannon on 05 Jan 2008 at 8:56 am #
1. I just finished Michele Bardsley’s, DON’T TALK BACK TO YOUR VAMPIRE–really fun vampire series. Next up is Joanna Bourne’s, THE SPYMASTER’S LADY, which everyone has been raving about.
2. I prefer to be “grabbed” at the beginning of the story. If I’m not, I’ll put the book down, but I usually try to pick it up again later.
3. How many books do I read a month? Depends on the month. I’ve been on a roll lately– about 5 books in the last week! Usually, about 5-6 per month, but I wish it was more. Unfortunately, things like work, laundry, housework, carpooling, etc. get in the way. *sigh*
4. Although romance is my fave, I’ll read just about anything: mysteries, thrillers, history, children’s books (HP, Narnia, The Golden Compass, etc.), straight fiction, you name it. I’m a true bibliophile!
5. If you never read THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES by Sue Monk Kidd, you should. It’s a wonderful story! Make sure you have tissues at hand.

6. I’ll go with EAT, PRAY, LOVE. That’s in my teetering TBR stack, too!
doglady on 05 Jan 2008 at 9:39 am #
1. I just finished rereading Loretta Chase’s LORD OF SCOUNDRELS - I truly love that book. Next on my stack is ROGUE’S LADY by Julia Justiss. THE SPYMASTER”S LADY is probably next on the list, just to see what the fuss is about.
2. I would prefer to be dragged in by the first 20 or so pages, but I usually slog thru just about anything in the eternal hope that it might redeem itself. Another selfish motive for reading something that doesn’t grab me is the inspiration it gives me. Sometimes a book makes me say “Hey, I can write better than that!” Shallow, I know!
3. I read anywhere from 15 to 20 books a month. I need to cut back on that and write more!
4. Historical romance is forever my favorite, but I also read paranormal, mystery, history, some contemp and terrifying romantic suspense (Karen R for example :))
5. I highly recommend either of Anna Campbell’s books. Fabulous!
6. The Pact sounds like a book club type book
Karen Rose on 05 Jan 2008 at 9:58 am #
Julia - zipping in from deadline to give you a good book for your book club to read. I haven’t laughed so much in a LONG time.
It’s called: How to Tell If Your Boyfriend Is The Antichrist: and if he is, should you break up with him?
It is seriously funny. It is also practical and versatile. For the same price, you also get tips on identifying the Boyfriend who is a zombie, serial killer, in the witness protection program, etc.
I highly recommend it - 5 stars!

Kim - thank you! I’m flying back to the keyboard to finish KILL FOR ME! But I have ARCs for SCREAM FOR ME (taunt, tease, torment). Maybe I should have a contest here on Mt. Oly and give one away. Hmmm?

1. I just finished (last night) Lover Awakened by JR Ward. Read it in 3 days and loved it. 4 days ago, I finished Sabrina’s “To Pleasure a Prince” really loved it, loved the whole dyslexia element and the beauty and beast theme (which I found to be more of a beauty and the hot stud theme)
2. With so many good books out there, I definitely subscribe to the “Life’s Too Short” mentality. I have put several books down after reading way too many supposedly great books that I thought were exercises in depression.
3. I read 4 - 6 books a month, the more I read that means the better they were.
4. I generally do not read outside the romance genre unless it is Stephen King or Dean Koonz but only rarely.
5. I have a million suggestions, but I would say, anything by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, Desperate Dutchesses by Eloisa James and I also love Jacquie D’Allessandro, especially Never a Lady. I love all you goddesses and I also love the squawkers (Lisa Kleypas, Teresa Medieros)

1. I finished JUST THE WAY YOU ARE by Christina Dodd last night/early this morning. I really liked it, but not as much as her historicals. Next I’m reading THE ABSTINENCE TEACHER by Tom Perrota.
2. Yes and no. I will go very far in the book before I put it down. But I don’t necessarily *have* to finish it. I’ve been known to put a book down 50 pages before the end.
3. 5 to 10. I’m trying to read 100 books this year, so I have to keep up a pretty steady pace. I’ve read 3 so far this year.
4. Young adult is my next favorite genre. Then fantasy. Some literary fiction, but not much. And whatever they have me read for school.

5. Hmm. This is hard. My tastes are so finicky and I expect people to like what I like, which is not always the case, so I try not to recommend books. But, let’s see… I’ve recently read Eva Ibbotson’s rereleased books. They’re romance, but set in the early 20th century, so that’s something new. They’re kind of simple, but still enjoyabl
6. I would guess Eat, Pray, Love because that seems to be on everyone’s book club list.
Happy reading!

I read Oprah’s current selection when it came out in the 90’s. Believe me, PILLARS OF THE EARTH is an amazing book………BUT don’t start it unless you have lots of time to read. It’s definitely one that will suck you in and you forget everything. Breathing is about the best you can accomplish while reading this book. My friend didn’t want to put it down long enough to get off the airplane and go sit in the cab to get to their vacation spot. He did NOTHING until he finished it, it’s that good.

OOOH! I good resolution, Julia!
1) Last book: THE LIFE OF BYRON (I’m on a biography kick) followed by Connie Brockway’s SKINNY DIPPING, which I have been waiting for FOREVER.
2) I don’t feel compelled to finish a book. Sometimes I’ll put down a certain book, sure I don’t like it, only to pick it up later and decide I love it, so I don’t toss them.
3) # Book Month: Probably 3-10, depending on my workload.
4) I still read a lot of romances, but I read contemps when writing historicals and, now that I’ve written a contemp, I find myself reading historicals then. But I also read adventure, fantasy, legal thrillers, biographies and self help books like Eat, Pray, Love, which is on my tbr pile right now, too.
5) Suggestions: Connie Brockway’s SKINNY DIPPING. You KNOW you’ll laugh!
6) I’d guest The Pact was your book club’s selection.
And now, I am going to get some paper to write down all of these great suggestions!

1. What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile? - THE PERFECT MATCH by Kimberly Cates. I’m now reading BOWLED OVER by Kasey Michaels. I’m on a contemporary kick.
2. Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory? - I used to finish it no matter what but no more.
3. How many books do you read a month - On average, probably around 12 - 15.
4. Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like - Mysteries, Political thrillers, Non-fiction

What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile?
Aint Myth-Behaving by Katie MacAlister is what I’m currently reading (I’ve finished the first story in it) and I plan on reading Visitors from Oz by Martin Gardner next.
Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory?
It usually depends on the author but generally I’ll put down a book if I can’t get into it. That doesn’t stop me from feeling bad about it though.
How many books do you read a month?
It really varies but I’d like to stay in the 10-15 category whenever possible
Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like?
Anything and everything really. I loved mixed genres though.
Any suggestions for books for my February reading list?
The Burning Times by Jeanne Kalogridis
Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection?
Eat, Pray, Love probably.

5. Any suggestions for books for my February reading list? - I second Gannon’s suggestion. THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES is one of my all-time favorites. I also loved WHEN CRICKETS CRY by Charles Martin (available through Amazon.com). My book club read it last year and it grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go until long after I finished the story.
Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection? - I’ll go with EAT, PRAY, LOVE, which I enjoyed. My second pick would be THE PACT. Picoult’s books are very popular with book clubs. I highly recommend MY SISTER’S KEEPER by her.
claudia dain on 05 Jan 2008 at 10:49 am #
I’m the same way, Julia. I just can’t read much fiction when I’m writing fiction all day, and that includes romance. It’s pretty sad when the genre you love the best is what you read the least!
I’m currently reading Revolutionary Characters, which is about the founding fathers, and Privilege and Scandal, the life of Harriet Spencer, sister of Georgiana, and Gentlemen’s Blood, a history of dueling, and 1759–the Year Britain Became Master of the World, and 1763 (what is it with all the dates as titles?)
I used to be the type that would read to the end, no matter what. Those days are done. Too many books, too little time.
I’m going out today to buy Lori Handeland’s last book in her Nightcreature series, Thunder Moon. I’m also dying to read Scream For Me since I love suspense. Skinny Dipping is on my list and I think Boyfriend/Antichrist sounds hysterical so as long as I’m at the bookstore…

1 - Just finishing WIGFIELD: the Can Do Town that Just May Not by Stephen Colbert & Amy Sedaris and TBR is The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin. It’s TBR ‘coz sludging through 75 pages in 4 weeks doesn’t count as currently reading.
2 - LIfe is Short, I don’t finish if it’s not compelling.
3 - I maybe read 1-2 general fiction books a month. If it’s a good month for new releases in Romance, 4-5.
4 - Mystery, History, Humor and general fiction are “also reads” but not with any dedication or fervor.
5 - February suggestions - For re-reading, Jane Austin’s Persuasion is a great one because of the awful family. Stephen Colbert’s I Am America (And So Can You) is brilliant satire. This one kept my large self on the treadmill (a good reading place) for over an hour.

Fun questions, Julia!
=What is the last book you read and what is next on your TBR pile?
Michael Connolly’s thriller THE LAST COYOTE, next is Susan Mallery’s single title contemp romance, ACCCIDENTLY YOURS.
=Are you the sort that feels compelled to finish a book no matter what, or do you subscribe to the Life Is Short theory?
Definitely LIFE IS TOO SHORT. Although I will usually take 5 minutes to speed skim a book to the end if I’ve invested money in it.
=How many books do you read a month
Lately it’s only been a few per month, but I caught up some over the holidays… read five in 1 week.
=Do you read outside of the romance genre, and if so, what sort of books do you like
Psycological thrillers are my escape. Not so much blood and gore but great suspense.
=Any suggestions for books for my February reading list?
You’re far more eclectic than I am, so I don’t feel I can advise you *GRIN*
Bonus round: Which of the above mentioned books do you think is my book club’s selection?
I would guess EAT, PRAY, LOVE. But it could also be the Piccoult book.

I’m a hundred pages into Eat, Pray, Love and enjoying it. The Pact was one of my favorites as are all of her books. My tbr pile constantly changes. For the moment it’s Wicked because it was a gift but I’m getting a lot of good ideas from the above posts.
Oh I’m the compelled type - just finished 100 Years of Solitude and if felt like it took me a 100 years to read it.
I never read the same amount of books.
Historicals are my favorite but I read almost everything (not erotica).
The Earth Children Series by Jean Auel is a great read.
Definitely The Pact!

What is Eat, Pray, Love about?
KariE on 05 Jan 2008 at 3:30 pm #
-Last book was Someone Like You by Barbara Bretton and just started Sweetgrass by Mary Alice Monroe. I don’t recall reading either of these authors before. Both books are very enjoyable. (Reading new authors was something I’m trying to do this year)
-I always try to finish a book. I once started a Nora Roberts book that just didn’t grab me in the first chapter. I set it down then came back to it about 9 months later. It ended up being a great book. At the time I don’t think I was meant to read that book.
-I think I end up reading about 7-10 in a month. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
-I like romance the most but also enjoy a good mystery.

Lisa H, I think its a woman’s journey–I think a spiritual one–to self-discovery. After a nasty divorce, she eats her way through Italy, prays her way through Indonesia, and then loves her way somewhere.
I started it last night and read about 50 pages, so I don’t really know much.

1. I just finished reading MINE TIL MIDNIGHT by Lisa Kleypas and up next is THE WICKED WAYS OF A DUKE by Laura Lee Guhrke.
2. I usually try to finish a book no matter what but if I really cannot get into it at all then I use the Life is Short theory.
3. It depends but I would say anywhere from 6-12 books a month.
4. I do read outside the romance genre. I like young adult/children’s literature, fantasy, classics, mystery and a good genreal fiction too.
5. I’m not sure what you like to read. But if you did enjoy the Harry Potter series then maybe you would like the Artemis Fowl series or Earagon and Eldest. The Golden Compass series is great too. I read a lot of that stuff because that is kind of the focus of my Master’s.
Bonus round: Eat, Pray, Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert,

NICOLE JORDAN, have you read any books by Michele Martinez? She write fantastic psychological thrillers and carries the same heroine, a NY Federal Prosecutor, throughout the series. So far she’s written MOST WANTED, THE FINISHING SCHOOL, COVER-UP and has a new one, NOTORIOUS, coming out in February. The first one had me looking over my shoulder the entire time I was reading it and I stayed up until 2:45 am to finish it.

1. Ok, this is a bit spooky, since I finished Dangers of Deceiving a Viscount yesterday. Seriously. Oh, and it was seriously wonderful, too, but that wasn’t surprising.
Next up is either KarenR’s Die for Me, which has been calling to me, or Anna Campbell’s Claiming the Courtesan or Johanna Lindsey’s Angel, which has been in my TBR forever (Aspen, TBR is To Be Read pile, not to be confused with TBB, To Be Bought).
2. I almost always finish fiction. Don’t know why. Even if I skim the last half, I have to know how it ends. I can probably count on one hand the books I haven’t finished. Nonfiction is another matter. The half-read corpses of SO many nonfiction books lie on my shelves.
3. Um, like you, I have trouble reading fiction when I’m writing. I read a lot, but probably finish one to two books a month.
4. I read everything, although romances of all kinds are still my favorites. I occasionally dip into sf/f and thrillers and I love erotica. Don’t like mysteries or inspirational.
Sabrina Jeffries on 05 Jan 2008 at 7:50 pm #
5. Suggestions, hmm. Outside of the goddesses, I haven’t read much new lately, so all the books I can suggest are old, but I loved, LOVED Rexanne Becnel’s Blink of an Eye, about Hurricane Katrina.
If you’re looking for mainstream, I can’t recommend highly enough The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Fabulous book.
My brilliant friend, Ursula Vernon, has a great fantasy book out called Black Dogs.
Let me see, what else have I read lately? Mostly, I’ve been reading old British Heritage mags and PWs as I tried to finish my novella.

1) I finished the 2nd book in the spice trilogy by Gaelen Foley. In my TBR pile is The accidental Mistress by Tracy Anne Warren (just started it–pretty good), Once a Knight–Christina Dodd, Confessions at Midnight–Jacquie D’Alessandro, and The Bastion Club novels from Stsphanie Laurens.
2) I am the type of reader that reads from start to finish regardless if it is not interesting enough. I like to give the author the benefit of the doubt the at some point the book might turn interesting.
3) I read a book a day or day and a half. If I run out of new books I re-read some my faves
4) i read absolutely anything. If it has words I’ll read it. I prefer suspense thrillers and real life investigation true crime novels after romance. Fave authors: Ann Rule, Robin Cook, Dean Koontz, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte…….and all romance authors I love them all!!

6) I am going to say : An Arsonist’s Guide to Writer’s Homes in New England by Brock Clarke?

By the way what is considered “Erotica”? I’ve heard about that lately but not exactly sure if I am reading it or if not should I try it?

Julia, I haven’t read the new one by Mark Haddon, sorry.
Yasmin, novels called erotica generally focus more on a woman’s sexual journey than on the romance. That is, they contain LOTS of sex in lots of different scenarios.
