My Top Ten Christmas Movies and TV specials
Dec 11th 2007
Karen RoseMy Life As A Plebe
I have been waiting for Christmas. I love eating the cookies and giving the presents and all the holiday cheer. And I love the special HOLIDAY PRESENTATIONS. Over the next few weeks, I’ll take a break from my deadline every now and again to watch a few with my family and enjoy! Here are my TOP TEN in no particular order.
1 ) A CHRISTMAS STORY - “It was … Soap Poisoning” and “Fudddggge” and “I triple-dog-dare-you!” and the Bumpiss Dogs and “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!”
2 ) HOLIDAY AFFAIR - heartwarming romance with Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh. Don’t miss it!
3 ) A CHRISTMAS CAROL - w/George C. Scott is the best
4 ) CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS - “
And that, Charlie Brown, is what Christmas is all about.”
5 ) A YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS - ”I’m Mr. Heat Miser, I’m Mr. Sun” (You know you want to sing along!)
6 ) WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING - Hey, it happens at Christmas!
7 ) MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS - Garland sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and I choke up every time
8 ) BERNARD AND THE GENIE - Charming!
9 ) MIRACLE ON 34th STREET - The Original, BTW -
“Oh, I do believe, I do believe…”
10) Dr. Seuss’s HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS “He even stole the roast beast.” Ba-who-dorray, Welcome Christmas, Christmas Day!
What are your favorite Holiday Presentations? Do you have a favorite line to quote along?

It’s a Wonderful Life-I wanna live again!
Elle Humbug on 11 Dec 2007 at 7:33 am #
Don’t forget Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer! I remember how “in awe” we were of the terrific animations. Even the Norelco commercials during that presentation were great.
I’d forgotten how important Christmas Presentations were to us as children. We didn’t have iPods, DVDs, VCRs or cable. Just a dozen or so working TV stations (wire hanger enhanced, of course).
The Biggies for us were, The Grinch, Rudolph and Charlie Brown. Nothing said “Ho Ho Ho” like those three.
Elle Humbug on 11 Dec 2007 at 7:38 am #
One of my favorite scenes in the original Miracle on 34th Street:
Santa needs a place to stay for a few days. A rich old executive from Macy’s slips his wife a few extra double martinis so that she will be willing to put Santa up. They show her holding the phone upside down slurring “Of course Santa can stay with us.”
I use that call line with anyone who shows the effects of over indulgence in my presence. It’s a hoot.
Lisa H on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:06 am #
It’s a Wonderful Life - too.
I love, “My brother, George Baily, the richest man in town.”
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:17 am #
I remember planning our schedule around Charlie Brown Christmas when I was a kid. You got one shot and if you missed it … pfft. It was gone. Now, through the magic of DVD, I can watch whenever I choose. Yay!
jessie on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:42 am #
Every year we watch A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott–the only version, as far as I’m concerned.
I also love A Charlie Brown Christmas. On Saturday Night Live, there is the one Saturday TV Funhouse bit where Jesus is walking around town looking in on all these people talking about Christmas–televangelists, etc.–and he’s disgusted. Then he sees a TV with the Charlie Brown Christmas on it and Linus is explaining the meaning of Christmas. The cartoon Jesus has finally found someone who’s got it right! Then he starts doing a Charlie Brown dance. I just love that.
Every year I try to catch How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph, and this cartoon version of Frosty the Snowman. Those are all my favorites.
SuzyQ on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:46 am #
Karen, you named some of my top shows, especially A Year Without A Santa Claus and I did sing along! Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer is always playing in my house, so I know it by heart now. I had to wait once a year and now my kids can watch it whenever they want.
It’s A Wonderful Life is a top favorite in my house too. Another movie I liked but never see much is The Bishop’s Wife.
Cookiedough on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:57 am #
My top five movies are:
Love Actually- “We’ve been given our parts in the nativity play. And I’m the lobster. ”
Muppet Christmas Carol-”Mother always taught me: “Never eat singing food.”
White Christmas-” sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters”
Holiday Inn-”ou sound sweet, but you don’t make sense”
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation -”Is your house on fire, Clark? No, Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights”
cail on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:59 am #
i’m a big fan of While You Were Sleeping.
SuzyQ on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:18 am #
Elf has really grown on me since I’ve seen it, oh 50 times or so. I love the snowball fight scene.
KariE on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:19 am #
A Christmas Story
-”I triple-dog-dare-you!”
We have seen it twice so far this season. I have a feeling they aren’t doing the Christmas day marathon.
Oh, can’t forget Scrooged with Bill Murray “I can’t get the antlers glued onto this little guy.”
- “Try staples.”
ladydawgfan on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:24 am #
I watched “The Bishop’s Wife” on DVD last night, one of my faves.
And I agree whole heartedly RE the George C Scott version of Scrooge. No other can touch it.
Other Christmas faves are:
A Christmas Story (”You’ll shoot your eye out, Kid!”)
Nat’l Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (”Grace? She died 20 years ago!”)
The House Without A Christmas Tree (old Jason Robards TV movie)
The Gathering (Ed Asner, and the late, great Jean Stapleton)
Miracle on 34Th Street (both 1947 and 1994 versions)
Charlie Brown’s Christmas, The Grinch, Frosty, Rudolph, and all of the other Rankin Christmas specials from my childhood.
Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas, which I finally found on DVD.
Any of the Hallmark Hall of Fame Christmas movies recently shown (all have been absolutely wonderful).
Julia London on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:54 am #
A Christmas Story
Love Actually
The Grinch with Jim Carrey (he deserved an Oscar for the Grinch)
The Grinch animated
Charlie Brown
Movies that grate:
Bad Santa
Its a Wonderful Life (probably from being forced to watch it every year at Christmas) Sorry. I know that will not go over well with some of you.
ladydawgfan on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:57 am #
Actually, Julia, I have never in my live seen “It’s a Wonderful Life!” Not even once! I tried, but it just seems so schmaltzy to me.
Cookiedough on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:01 am #
I was talking about It’s a Wonderful Life with a friend a few weeks ago, and we both thought it was too depressing to watch.

Meg on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:08 am #
My favorite is Mickey’s Christmas Carol. And then National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I don’t have it memorized, but I love the line where Chevy Chase rants about his bose after getting his emrollment for the jelly of the monthe club. Hilarious!!!
Meg on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:13 am #
Sorry, I just got up. Chevy Chase is ranting about his BOSS.
ladydawgfan on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:35 am #
For Meg:
“Hey. If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I’d like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d**kless, hopeless, heartless, fat-arse, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey s**t he is. Hallelujah. Holy s**t. Where’s the Tylenol?”
Lisa H on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:13 am #
I also love the line from “A Christmas Story”
“It says F R A G I L E, it must be Italian.”
It’s okay Julia, you don’t have to like “It’s a Wonderful Life”
We are allowed to have our own favorites!!!
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:15 am #
I really liked The Bishop’s Wife - I saw it for the first time last year. It has Cary Grant, how could it be bad? But it got edged out for While You Were Sleeping. I LOVE Lucy and Jack. Ahhhh.
Julia, I’m afraid I have to agree with you on It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ve seen it too many times, I fear. But (and don’t y’all hate me for this!!) I really liked the Saturday Night Live Alternate Ending - with the townspeople killing Mr. Potter. LOL.
Of COURSE I love Rudolph - but the elf who wants to be a dentist was always my favorite.
On DH’s list was A Year Without A Christmas Tree with Jason Robards. I liked it, too.
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:15 am #
And Lisa H, after the lamp “accidentally” breaks - “YOU DID THAT ON PURPOSE!”
There is so much to love about The Christmas Story.
Meg on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:34 am #
Thanks ladydawgfan. That made my day. I think I’ll be watching that movie tonight.
Mia Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:39 am #
Okay, like everyone… A CHRISTMAS STORY has been my favorite since I saw it for the first time in my 7th grade English class. There are entirely too many funny lines in that movie, it’s priceless!
“He looks like a deranged Easter bunny.”
Karie, you made me remember SCROOGED. Bill Murray is hilarious, as usual…
“God, tomorrow’s bad for me, Lou. Matter of fact, the whole rest of the week is a wash out. Ouch, well maybe we can have drinks say, Thursday? You, me the ghost. Trader Vic’s, around four? Something like that?”
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (I love them both)
& White Christmas too… Classics.
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:41 am #
Aw, CookieD, thanks for the Snow Miser/Heat Miser clip! I misquoted (gasp).
I’m Mr. Green Christmas, I’m Mr. Sun!
Okay, now it’s right.
Gannon on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:43 am #
Yay, we love Christmas movies! Some of my faves:
Love Actually –gets me from the beginning, all the people at the airport. *sniff*
Elf –love when he eats the cotton balls
It’s A Wonderful Life — sorry, Julia, but I’m a sap!
Miracle on 34th Street (the original) –how could you NOT believe?!
Year Without A Santa Claus — my fave cartoon. Snow Miser and Heat Miser rock!
The Grinch (both cartoon and Jim Carrey) — somebody’s Fabulous!
Rudolph –love Yukon Cornelius!
Karen Hawkins on 11 Dec 2007 at 11:57 am #
The Grinch! No wait, Love Actually! No, no, wait! It’s a Wonderful Life! No, wait! Miracle on 34th Street! No wait –
Actually, I’ve never met a Christmas movie I didn’t love. I just love Christmas stories, no matter how cheesy, corny, or poorly acted they may be.
Now I’m thinking about all of them and wondering how many my TIVO will hold. Hmmm . . .
Keri Ford on 11 Dec 2007 at 12:21 pm #
As I’m reading through these I’m seeing a common trend with myself. All of the cartoons I smile and think about how much I LOVE that movie. And then I read one of the actual movie titles and my nose starts curling up.
Jumping on the Julia bandwagon, not into Christmas Story. But I did laugh a LOT at Bad Santa-but with lots of guilt because it was such a bad movie (morally bad, not bad as in sucky movie).
anneriailin on 11 Dec 2007 at 12:41 pm #
Cookiedough mentioned about all of my favorite Christmas movies.
No one has mentioned ‘White Christmas’ with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen yet. Funny movie. I just LOVE the part where Bing and Danny do the sister song when the girls have to hightail it outta town!
Favorite line has gotta be when Doris is trying to convince Susan there is no Santa Claus…….
Susan Walker: But when he spoke Dutch to that girl…
Doris Walker: Susan, I speak French, but that doesn’t make me Joan of Arc.

Oh Kasey you named some good ones. I forgot about Home Alone. I laughed so hard the first time I saw that movie when the spider lands on his head and he screams like a woman!
doglady on 11 Dec 2007 at 1:12 pm #
Great topic Karen! Here are my favorites in no particular order.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (Right up your alley, Karen
It’s a Wonderful Life (enroll me in the Sap Club!) “You really had a wonderful life, George” “Each life touches so many others.”
Scrooged (the scene where Bob Goldthwait is trying to kill Bill Murray!)
A Christmas Carol (George C gets my vote as well!)
A Christmas Story (As you would expect I love the scene where the dogs steal Christmas dinner!) I triple dog dare you! EEEEEK!
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Ladydawgfan thank you for posting my favorite quote from that one!
Home Alone (when he prays that he doesn’t want any presents, all he wants for Christmas is his family. Love that!)
The Santa Clause (the first one most of all! I love when he has to put the turkey out with a fire extinguisher. “Are we on a coffee break? I don’t drink coffee. Then I guess the break is over!”
A Charlie Brown Christmas

I can’t believe I forgot about the Santa Clause movies! I have the soundtracks as well …love them!
And Home Alone!
So many!!! I’m like Karen H, I’ve never really met one I haven’t liked.
Even Valerie Bertinelli ’s Finding John Christmas…was filmed here btw.my friend was an extra for a few scenes. She hated having to wear her winter cloths in July for the filming, but she had a blast going back and forth
Julia London on 11 Dec 2007 at 1:38 pm #
Keri, Bad Santa was funny — but I just really questioned myself as a person when laughing because it was repugnant!
Kay on 11 Dec 2007 at 2:17 pm #
Karen, great topic.
Sooooo many good choices.
In our house, the # 1 Christmas movie is A CHRISTMAS STORY. “It’s a major award!” “You’ll shoot your eye out.” “I like Santa Claus.” “It was…soap poisoning.”
I love WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING. It comes in second. *SIGH*
Third is THE MUPPETS CHRISTMAS CAROL. “Light the lamp, not the rat.”
The original GRINCH is next. I HATED the Jim Carey one. Sorry folks, I really thought it was awful.
Rounding out the top five is a tie. ELF and SCROOGED. My DH loves the part about the antlers. LOL
We pace ourselves, watching one a week, and enjoy it so much.
claudia dain on 11 Dec 2007 at 2:33 pm #
I *thought* I loved all of them, but (ouch) some of those mentioned I don’t like. I’m the only woman on the continent who hated Love, Actually. Blech.
Love It’s A Wonderful Life, love the pure emotion of it, but again, have only seen it about 10 times, so no overkill yet for me. Just to see that telephone scene between George and Mary is more than enough reason to love it. Sigh.
I like the old ones (White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Bishop’s Wife, Charlie Brown, Rudolph, Frosty) because watching them is a part of my Christmas tradition now. I’ve watched them my whole life!
I like the new ones (The Santa Clause, Muppets, Elf, Scrooged) because they were so quirky and made me laugh.
The one Christmas movie that hits every right note for me every single time is The Christmas Story. I LOVE that movie. It seems to get better with every viewing.
PJ on 11 Dec 2007 at 2:35 pm #
Gannon, I’m just going to copy your list. You named all my favs!
Love Actually
Elf – love the snowball fight
It’s A Wonderful Life — another sap checking in
Miracle on 34th Street (the original) –I BELIEVE!
Year Without A Santa Claus
The Grinch (original)
Rudolph
…and I’ll add A Christmas Carol (with George C. Scott) - Fabulous!
claudia dain on 11 Dec 2007 at 2:35 pm #
Oops, I meant *A* Christmas Story. The leg lamp, the BB gun, the tongue on the flagpole, the dogs getting the turkey, the winter-dressed kids…what’s not to love?
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 2:39 pm #
Has no one seen HOLIDAY AFFAIR (Robert Mitchum in his prime) or BERNARD AND THE GENIE (featuring Rowan Atkinson)?!? They’re great!
The George C. Scott version of Dickens is always a joy to watch. Scott is the quintessential Scrooge.
I’ve never seen LOVE, ACTUALLY and it’s been years since I saw the MUPPETS.
Kasey on 11 Dec 2007 at 3:07 pm #
SuzyQ - I was in elementary school when that movie came out. I went to see it in the movie theater with some friends and all of us laughed so hard. It is still one of my favorites. My sister and I got it out last week and watched it just because I love Christmas movies.
Lisa H on 11 Dec 2007 at 3:28 pm #
What is Bernard and the Genie? Is it a cartoon? An oldie?
Emmiebee on 11 Dec 2007 at 3:51 pm #
Hi everyone!
I LOOOVVVEEE Christmas movies! Almost every one listed above makes me smile. Or laugh. Or cry. Or all three. But, it is not really Christmas until I have watched Emmit Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. That is just the law. Oh, and a brand-new addition- Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather- a four hour mini-series that rocked my fantasy/holiday world. It was AMAZING, and the speech that Death gives to his Granddaughter Susan at the end made me gasp. It really cut to the meaning of Christmas in a way that no one but Linus has ever been able to do for me! happy watching,
-Emmiebee
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:02 pm #
Oh, I love Emmit Otter, too!
Bernard and the Genie is a movie about this nerdy lovable guy (Bernard) who is royally screwed by his evil boss (Rowan Atkinson). Bernard loses his job, his girl and everything all in one day. Then he finds a Genie in a lamp. Genie has been imprisoned since the time of Jesus. It’s a brilliantly done movie that combines Genie’s amazement with the present day, Bernard’s goodness, with allusions to the time of Bethlehem from Genie’s POV.
If it comes on, watch it! It has Alan Cumming as Bernard and Lenny Harry as the Genie. If you watch British TV, Lenny Harry was on CHEF.
SuzyQ on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:05 pm #
Has anyone mentioned Jingle All The Way? For anyone trying to find that popular toy for your kids, you can relate to this movie.
Sonja Foust on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:05 pm #
I have to put in a vote for It’s a Wonderful Life and Holiday Inn. I love your choices too though.
While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorites. A new favorite is The Holiday.
KariE on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:43 pm #
“But, it is not really Christmas until I have watched Emmit Otter’s Jug Band Christmas.”
My MIL brought this with her on Thanksgiving. I had never even heard of it before. Needless to say, my 4 year old loves it.
The part where they slid down the hill we all yelled “I CAN SEE THE WIRES!!” Was a memorable family moment. I have a feeling I will be stuck watching it in June.
Cookiedough on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:54 pm #
I loved Bernard and the Genie!
Lennie Henry rules!
His love is Dawn French…the Vicar of Dibley, who BTW, looks EXACTLY like my minister sister!
too hilarious!
claudia dain on 11 Dec 2007 at 5:16 pm #
I’ve seen Holiday Affair!! I’ve seen all the old movies, trust me. LOL Robert M. is a favorite actor of mine. I adore him (again with D. Kerr) in that movie where he’s the Marine on the island, she’s the nun…why can’t I remember the title?? What an amazing love story and not a kiss exchanged.
My daughter and I just watched Meet Me in St. Louis a few days ago and I LOVE watching Judy sing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. My favorite line from that movie:
Judy: “I’m going to let John Truitt kiss me tonight.”
Sis: “Esther! A girl doesn’t let a man kiss her before they’re formally engaged. A man doesn’t want the bloom rubbed off.”
Judy (looking at herseif in the mirror): “Personally, I think I have too much bloom.”
cail on 11 Dec 2007 at 5:17 pm #
ok, i’ve never seen Miracle on 34th St, Its a Wonderful Life, or A Christmas Story…
I can’t believe I forgot about Elf!!! That’s not only one of my fav xmas movies, it’s prob in my top 20 movie list. Also, Love Actually is an amazing movie.

Okay…I need to come out of the closet. I have NEVER seen Love, Actually. So technically, I’m lower than Claudia, the only women in America to hate it. Just to be unique, I’m gonna watch it and then try to hate it. That way Claudia and I can start our our club.
So there.

My sister and I always joke around this time of year about our list of “must see” Christmas movies (in no particular order):
1) Die Hard
2) Lethal Weapon
3) Die Hard: Die Harder
4) Nightmare Before Christmas
5) Gremlins
6) About a Boy
7) A Christmas Story
If it’s got Christmas in it, then it’s a Christmas movie. Besides, Alan Rickman’s character in Die Hard is named Hans Gruber (the guy who wrote the lyrics to Silent Night). *g*
Elle Humbug on 11 Dec 2007 at 6:41 pm #
About a Boy is one of my favorite movies EVER. My son will still watch it with me.
zambonigirl on 11 Dec 2007 at 6:45 pm #
oh, why can’t every day be like christmas?
i love a christmas story, scrooged, white christmas, charlie brown, garfield, and the grinch. i grew up watching those. i just found the old animated version of frosty last year and was exstatic. “happy boithday!
i would have formatted, but the arm is still broken. too hard.
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 6:47 pm #
Oh, and the little girl in Frosty is named Karen. I always felt so special when I watched that show. When Frosty “dies” I sobbed as a child. (Of course I sobbed when Fred Flinstone got arrested and Barney brought him a cake with a file in it, too).
Karen Rose on 11 Dec 2007 at 8:57 pm #
Claudia, that Mitchum/Kerr movie is Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison. It was bugging me, so I looked it up.
Sabrina Jeffries on 11 Dec 2007 at 9:09 pm #
What about Bridget Jones’ Diary? With Colin Firth in an assortment of Christmas sweaters? How can you miss?
I also love Love Actually (Claudia and I have debates about it), The Grinch (original, because I haven’t seen the other one yet), and While You Were Sleeping (one of my top romantic movies of all time). Also enjoy any version of Christmas Carol.
For some reason, they often show Sound of Music at Christmas so it’s a fave.
I missed most of the traditional Christmas movies because of growing up in Thailand, so now they seem cheesy or something. I can’t get into most of them, weirdly enough. I haven’t seen most of the new ones, but now will seek out A Christmas Story. And I’ve BEEN wanting to see Elf.
But the one I always try to catch is not a movie, but a show–the SNL Gumbey’s Christmas Special, with Joe Piscopo playing Sinatra singing Silent Night and with the hired Dickens orphans. I LOVE THAT!!
What can I say? Running down my sappy heart is a strong streak of irreverence.
Kelly Ann on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:00 pm #
I just watched Shrek’s Christmas show tonight and loved it, I laughed hysterically! I love all those 1/2 hour Christmas cartoons they play throughout December too. I have a few other favorites and Sabrina, Elf, is one of them. I also love Meet Me in St. Louis & White Christmas. I have too many favorites to mention them all though!
Kasey on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:33 pm #
Okay when Sabrina mentioned SNL I thought of one of my favorite Christmas skits. This one is the one with Alec Baldwin and his Schweaty Balls. It is hilarious.

I like just about any Christmas show/movie. There is one that I didn’t see mentioned though — it starred Marie Osmond many years ago called “The Christmas Gift”. Not only does it have many of the loving aspects of Christmas in it, but it is also a great romantic movie.
I’ve watched probably 85% of the movies listed above and also “Christmas with the Kranks”. It’s okay also. Watching Jamie Lee Curtis racing another woman through the grocery store for the honey ham, then chasing the darn ham rolling through the parking lot and down the street only to be ran over right before her eyes was great. Also seeing Tim Allen immediately after having a Botox injection and trying to eat was funny!!
Dot C on 11 Dec 2007 at 10:59 pm #
I’m late, but here’s mine!
#1 - Nestor the Long Eared Christmas Donkey - I still cry like a fool every time.
#2 - Santa Clause is coming to town - Put one foot in front of the other!
#3 - Beauty & the Beast Enchanted Christmas
#4 - Beauty & the Beast original
#5 - There was a tv animated special. It was about a little girl in victorian era christmas who was very very ill…maybe with small pox, and her father has to go away, but promises to get her a special Christmas present. He isn’t able to find one, and spends time writing her her very own Christmas Poem which he called “A visit from St Nicolas” Her father was Clement C Moore. I don’t know the name of the show, but it was wonderful, and all my powers of internet research haven’t been able to let me find it again. Any help is appreciated. I thought it was called Twas the Night Before Christmas, but the only thing that comes up for that is the 1974 Rankin/Bass Special about the mice who insulted Santa.
#6 - The Snowman
Karen Rose on 12 Dec 2007 at 2:16 am #
I do love Santa Claus is coming to Town as well, Dot! That’s the one that starts out with “Fred Astaire” as the postman, right? Those old Rankin Bass specials were great. And I’d forgotten about Nestor.
Can’t help you on the Victorian story. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it.
SnikWhite on 12 Dec 2007 at 10:40 am #
While there are many already listed that I have quoted on more than one occasion, my favorite movie to watch at the holidays is Better Off Dead. John Cusack is hilarious and while it is not the traditional “Christmas” movie, it is set during the season. Favorite quote is hard to choose, cause there are so many quotable quotes, but “Gee Ricky, sorry I blew up your mom” and “I’ve been going to this school for 71/2 years…I’m no dummy” are by far my favorites.
Great holiday fun for the whole family…well if you’re my family and everything is just slightly screwed up
Georgie Lee on 12 Dec 2007 at 1:31 pm #
“A Christmas in Connecticut” with Barbara Stanwyck is one of my favorite holiday movies. I also love all the old claymation Rudolph specials and of course, Charlie Brown.
Karen Rose on 12 Dec 2007 at 5:23 pm #
Snik White - love Better Off Dead. My favorite scene is the one where Ricky’s mom gets blown up, too. And where the little brother builds a space shuttle out of household items and picks up trashy women, LOL.
Georgie - C in CN was on my DH’s list, too. Barbara Stanwyck is such a classy actress!

I’m tired of all the old movies.
I watch the Santa Clause movies year round.
