The Dollar Store

I did two things on Black Friday that I’ve never done before. The first was that I went to the mall. My kids needed stuff. That’s my excuse. The second thing I did that I’ve never done before is also the fault of my kids; I discovered iTunes.

This is how it happened. My daughter was sitting at the kitchen island, cruising the internet and listening to wonderful Christmas songs coming out of her computer. She had Frank Sinatra singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Bing Crosby crooning White Christmas, Dean Martin dean_martin_320×240.jpgwarbling Baby It’s Cold Outside. I was intrigued. I was spellbound. I was envious. I wanted my favorite holiday songs from my favorite artists, too!

That’s when my daughter introduced me to iTunes. Our computers side by side, the smell of cranberries and stuffing in the warm kitchen air, she showed me how to access iTunes and how to make purchases. Each only 99 cents!

99_cents.jpg
Each only 99 cents.

You can see the problem. In an initial buying frenzy where I actually bought the same song by the same artist twice (different recordings), my daughter advised me to slow down, take a breath, and step away from the computer. But with just a click of the mouse, I could have Eartha Kitt singing Santa Baby. That’s my favorite holiday song!

No, wait, Judy Garland singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is my favorite song. Hey, I’ve always wanted a copy of Judy singing You Made Me Love You. And while I’m on love songs, I’m going to click back to Frank Sinatra and pick up Come Fly With Me. And what was that song I heard on the radio that was so great?

I’m not even going to tell you how much money I spent at the iTunes dollar store, but I’ll say this: I have three different versions of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

Am I the only one who has an iTunes addiction? Is there anyone else out there who buys in multiples? Who thinks that nothing bought for a dollar can be a bad purchase? Who thinks that owning multiple versions of the same song is completely logical?

I was lucky in that my Mr owns a subscription to Napster, and you can download songs without buying them….however, you don’t “have” them. If Napster loses the licensing to carry the song, you become unable to play it. I discovered this very disturbing phenomena when I went to play my coveted “downloads” of Live Sinead O’Connor, and every Andrew Lloyd Webber song ever made. So I never went on a buying spree, but I bet if I had one of those little Ipod thingies, it would be a whole different ball of wax.
Congrats on your trip to the Mall!!!! I hope you signed your stock at the local bookstore while you were out, nothing like an autographed copy to make a fabu holiday gift :)
    OKOK, I’m off it!

I have yet to find iTunes, but seeing as I have bought my son an MP3 player for Christmas this year, I am sure we will be getting onto the whole tunes from the web shopping thing.

And I just love Santa Baby and Baby It’s Cold Outside!

  3. Lisa H on 26 Nov 2007 at 7:05 am #

I am so tech challenged that I don’t know how to do any of this. Yes we have napster, but I don’t know how to download anything. (Pathetic huh?)

My daughter is getting a new MP3 for Christmas and she said I could have her old one. She also promised to fill it with my favorite songs for me. I will go on itunes and check it out.

I remember being a teenager and laughing at my mom who couldn’t program the VCR. I have turned into her!

Claudia, I think multiples are a very good thing, no matter what kind of multiples we are talking about!

funny, i was playing christmas songs on iTunes yesterday too! i have a tendancy now to just buy CDs and upload them to my computer. also means you can play the songs in more locations.

  5. Michellynn on 26 Nov 2007 at 8:19 am #

I LOVE iTunes. I download TV shows (to occasionally watch during my lunch hour at work), music and audiobooks for my iPod (nothing like getting chores done or commuting to work while listening to a good book!)….I download just about every type of media they have to offer. Hmmmm….definitely sounds like I have an addiction. LOL

As for multiples…I have download multiple versions of my favorite songs… I love Carol of the Bells (have several versions of this). I also love classical music and have several versions of my favorites including Albinoni’s Adagio in G (I have 4 versions of this one including a very modern Pop-like somewhat techno version by Bond).

iTunes makes it way TOO easy for addictive personality types such as myself. LOL

  6. Gannon on 26 Nov 2007 at 8:51 am #

What did we do before iTunes??! It’s amazing. I’m not as addicted as my 15-year-old son, though. Honestly, I think he’d go through withdrawal if something happened to iTunes!

  7. Karen Rose on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:02 am #

Claudia, I have Rhapsody To Go, so I can download my tunes to my MP3 player without buying them, for my monthly subscription price. This way, me and DH can listen on our computer and I can transfer songs to my MP3 and I don’t have to worry about jacking up my $.99/song grand total.

I have to sync once a month, but for me it’s a small price to pay ;-) Otherwise, I’d be up to my ears in dollar store debt, LOL.

  8. Karen Rose on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:11 am #

My favorite Christmas songs are from Nat King Cole, the man’s voice just slides me into the holidays! One of my other favorites (I have hundreds of Christmas “favorites”) is Garth Brooks singing “Belleau Wood” - a song about the Christmas Truce on a WW1 battlefield.

Unfortunately Garth doesn’t license his songs to Rhapsody, so I had to go out and buy his new album (which comes with a DVD with all his music videos! Woot!). I’m a Garth fan :-)

I hear you Lisa H! I am tech challenged to the max. I tell people I write about the Regency because that’s when I was supposed to be born. Horses, I get. Cars, computers, iPods?? EEK! iTunes sounds great. Maybe I will get my nephew to explain it all to me. Like me and books, me and music is a dangerous thing. I have a vinyl collection and CD collection that threatens to tip one end of my house over. I even have a fairly hefty collection of old 78’s of Caruso and other opera greats. I really need to put all of this stuff on CD, but remember I DID say I was technically challenged!

  10. Cookiedough on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:25 am #

I tend to download all my cds to my computor so I can put them willy nilly on my mp3 player. No ipod for me.
I like making a”mixed tape” cd for road trips- all my favs without having to change cds all the time!

  11. Cookiedough on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:27 am #

my Favourite classic Christmas song is Jluia Andrew’s O Come All Ye faithful..
The new generation fav is All I want For Christmas is You- but it has to be the one from Love Acutally! Not Mariah Carey!

  12. Cookiedough on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:27 am #

Love Actually! man I typo alot!

  13. Dot C on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:44 am #

So, I’m really loving the new Josh Grobin Noel cd, but I’m just so darned disappointed that he didn’t include the song he sang in the Polar Express movie on his cd :(
I’m a Perry Como and Andy Williams Christmas favorite fan….thats what we listened to growing up. I think I still have the LP’s around somewhere. I also like the upbeat and contemporary stuff too tho…when you have to listen to christmas music all day long, every day, you need LOTS of variety. I have the Eartha Kitt Santa Baby as my holiday ring tone, but I think I actually like the Madonna version better…it’s sassier!! I know that’s sacriledge…sorry!! The other thing I like, but for concentrated listening, and not casual is Trans Siberian Orchestra. They give me goosies. OHHH, and lastly, I absolutely ADORE my Michael Crawford Christmas album. WOW!

  14. Sherri Erwin on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:49 am #

My daughter loves Songza.com because you don’t have to download (or pay), they just play the songs, and they have a good selection. She loves Italian and Japanese pop(who knows why- I think it has something to do with her manga and anime addiction) and they have that there, too.

Multiples of the same song makes sense to me! Fun to see how different they all are. I buy multiples of my favorite books, because I love to share them and never want to part with my own treasured copies.

  15. Julia London on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:53 am #

I have never–NEVER–bought just one song from Itunes. Its always five or six. And more than once a month. Its an insidious little store, isn’t it?

  16. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 9:58 am #

You guys!!! You’re not supposed to list all the great recording artists and songs out there!!! Now I’m going to have to check out Madonna’s version of Santa Baby and Josh Groban and Andy Williams and Perry Como.

I downloaded I’ll Be Home For Christmas as sung by Tony Bennett and it was jazzy. Not what I wanted for that song. I wanted dreamy and soulful, his voice full of longing to be home. Bad Tony!

  17. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 10:00 am #

I don’t have an iPod or MP3 player, but they’re starting to look very very good to me. But can’t I just burn a disc on my computer for the songs I’ve already purchased?

  18. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 10:03 am #

DotC–I’m ashamed to admit that it didn’t even occur to me to sign books while at the mall on Black Friday. I was so busy looking for deals in store windows and trying to follow my kids in the crowds that nothing else entered my head.

  19. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 10:05 am #

Lisa H, beware iTunes!! You’ll get addicted after just one purchase. The problem is that they make it too easy and the selection is too great. Where’s my resistance supposed to come from?

But to all of us who are tech challenged, Apple products are for us. If I can do it, anyone can. Really.

  20. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 10:08 am #

DotC–thank you for explaining Napster to me. This is the first explanation I’ve understood. It sounds wonderful, but I would die if I lost favorite recordings. Isn’t it amazing how certain songs by certain artists just take us back in space and time? Time machine!

  21. Jingle Ellen on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:27 am #

I always pack my Christmas CDs away with the decorations. It is always such a thrill to open that box to put up the tree, and have all my favorites just sitting there waiting.

The Carpenter’s CD is one of my favorites. Karen’s voice on Ave Maria is incredible. So is her “Ill be home for Christmas.”

Another great find was Jewel’s CD. And Elvis, obviously. And Martina. And Nat.

How bout Barbra Streisand’s “Jingle Bells?” I laugh every time I hear it. Then there’s the barking dogs version.

  22. Jingle Ellen on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:30 am #

MY ABSOLUTE favorite song is “Oh Holy Night.” It was my Mom’s fave too.

  23. Jingle Ellen on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:31 am #

As far as iTunes…I am very happy with the vices I ALREADY have. Not shopping for new ones.

  24. Sabrina Jeffries on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:31 am #

My name is Sabrina Jeffries and I’m an Itunes-aholic. Seriously, the Ipod is the greatest thing ever invented. I not only have multiple versions of songs, but I listen to all of them. I love the feature of being able to hear a part of a cut before deciding to buy it.

My audiophile husband can’t stand music in this format–says he can hear all the stuff that’s cut out in the compressed format (knowing him, he probably can, too), but I have a lovely little group of purchases.

Oh, and Claudia, I know you can put your Itunes purchases on multiple computers, as long as you log in from each of them (I think there’s a limit of three or something). I haven’t tried to burn a CD though. I’d rather just put them on my Ipod.

  25. Caren Crane on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:33 am #

Cookiedough, I want that “Love Actually” version, too! Claudia, you can burn CDs of the tunes you download in iTunes. I have burned lots to play in my car! If you like an entire CD (or even most of one), it can be cheaper to buy the CD or to purchase the entire CD through iTunes than to buy individual songs.

The best thing is being able to buy just one song, not the entire CD. Plus, you can make sure it’s the one you want before you buy it. Plus, iTunes doesn’t have a montly fee! I don’t work for them, I promise. :-)

I bought myself an iPod two years ago, I think. It seems like it has been my friend forever, but it was when the Nano was new. It is my connection with me when I have to be at work. Thank the Lord I have one!

Claudia, we must have a conversation about the dangers of the iPod. It is quite addictive…

  26. zambonigirl on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:38 am #

The nice things about itunes is that if you buy a collection, they often throw in some songs for free. Like, I got a couple of John Denver anthologies, and they threw in different recordings of Matthew, Rocky Mountain High, This Old Guitar, and a few others. I now have a few different recordings of those songs. The artist I’m really bad about is Joni Mitchell. She never records the same thing the same way twice! I have about five different versions of Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now.

Does anyone else listen to their ipod in alphabetical order? It’s interesting sometimes, especially since Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and Tony Bennet all recorded many of the same songs.

  27. Michellynn on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:41 am #

You can indeed burn your iTunes purchases to CD. I do it all the time. I have burned all sorts of custom mixes that I listen to in my Car
s CD player (no iPod plug-in, in my car yet)….or in my CD player at work. It is very easy to do.

I just got an shuffle for my birthday, but haven’t been able to wrangle the computer away from my fantasy football addicted DH or Sesame Street game addicted son to be able to explore the wonderful world of i Tunes yet. A friend of mine recommended another online music site to me, she said it’s much less expensive than iTunes….I’d have to look for the name of it.

    I’m excited to start though!

  30. jessie on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:33 pm #

I love iTunes! So I don’t overspend (credit cards and the Internet: a dangerous mix), I buy iTunes giftcards for myself whenever I want new music and just use the money that comes on those. I think I own two versions of a Johnny Cash song, and two versions of a Postal Service song, but that’s about it. I don’t think it’s illogical, though. People can sing songs so differently that each way produces a new effect, and you just have to have both. Completely reasonable.

On a completely unrelated note, I was checking out Harlequin’s I Heart Presents blog, and I started thinking. Is “Presents” pronounced like “I will present this presentation” or like “Gift and present are synonymous”? I always said the first version, and it just hit me that it could be different. So if any of you goddesses could help me out with that, I’d be very appreciative. Thanks!

  31. Meg on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:35 pm #

I had totally forgot about downloading my favorite Christmas songs to my ipod! What fun I am going to have this evening!! Although, I am another who cannot buy just one, or even five. I’ll have to go through my CDs and put those on first, that way I can spend my money on the ones that I don’t have. And I am all up for multiples. Different Singer=Different Song. :-)

  32. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:46 pm #

Ellen, Karen Carpenter is one of those singers who sounds better with time. I mean, when she was alive and singing I thought she had a nice voice. Now I hear her and am just blown away by the purity of her voice, the particular sound she had, so distinctive! What a loss to the world.

Caren, we are going to need to have a serious discussion about iTunes! It’s looking pretty obvious to me that I need an iPod. Good thing Christmas is coming!!

  33. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:47 pm #

Sabrina, I KNEW you’d be another iTunes addict. Please explain to me how to listen to a cut before buying!! I can’t figure it out and I’ve made two purchases (Tony Bennett, are you listening?) that I wouldn’t have if I’d heard them first.

    This is when technology rocks!

  34. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:49 pm #

I think one of the things I love best about iTunes is that I don’t have to buy the entire album. In the good old days, when buying albums was the only option, I’d adore 3 songs out of 12, like maybe 4 more and the others…pfffftt. Buying only the ones I adore is so much nicer! I just has to be cheaper, right?

  35. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 12:51 pm #

Jessie, I think it’s the first version of Present.

And thanks for the info on how to keep firm hold of the cash flow when buying iTunes. You have no idea how I’m itching to click over there right now and buy some of the great artists mentioned here.

Do we need to start a support group?

  36. Sabrina Jeffries on 26 Nov 2007 at 1:09 pm #

Claudia, to listen to a cut, just put your mouse on the song listed at the bottom in the album list and either double-click or click on the play button up on Itunes on the top far left. Does that make sense? It will play a 30 second or so piece. I love this feature, partly because it allows me to make sure I’m getting the right song.

  37. Sabrina Jeffries on 26 Nov 2007 at 1:10 pm #

Wait, are you going into Itunes from Itunes on your computer or are you doing it from the website by going there on your browser?

  38. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 1:14 pm #

Uh, wow, not sure I understand the question, Sabrina. Let’s see. I’m using the bar at the bottom of my computer screen to access iTunes. Going into the store from there. So, the correct answer would be…going into iTunes from my computer?

Could we do a true/false quiz instead?

  39. Julia London on 26 Nov 2007 at 1:34 pm #

Claudia, I have burned CDs! Tres easy to do and they sound great!

  40. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 1:36 pm #

Julia, that sounds so cool! Making my own albums of only my favorite songs. Power, how I love it. LOL

  41. Suzanne Enoch on 26 Nov 2007 at 2:57 pm #

Yes, I became addicted to iTunes the minute I purchased my iPod earlier this year. It’s great when you don’t want the whole album, but just 1 or 2 songs.

I’ve been balking at putting my Christmas albums onto my iPod, though — I listen to it while I’m writing, and it’s jarring to go from the theme from “Gladiator” to “Frosty the Snowman”. It could damage my brain. *g*

  42. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:03 pm #

Okay, Suzanne, since you’ve outted yourself on being a Frosty fan, who sings your favorite version? Burl Ives?

And can’t you organize the iPod list by type? I have all my iTunes Christmas songs lumped together with a segway tune to the love songs.

  43. Michellynn on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:27 pm #

Claudia, you can organize you iPod list any way you want. You can create named folders (called playlists) in iTunes and put the songs you want in the different folders/playlists..in whatever order you want. From there you can select which folders/playlists are loaded on to your iPod. It sounds complicated, but it really isn’t.

  44. twolilhahas on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:31 pm #

I’ve never bought anything from iTunes, but I have enjoyed listening to their free stuff. I really enjoyed the scottish people teaching spanish lessons. Very cool!

So, while I don’t know about buying tons of music, I do know about spending loads at dollar stores. I’ve banned myself from those places because the last time I went in, I came out $50 poorer. Not good.

  45. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:33 pm #

Michellyn, once you have the songs in folders, how do you transfer the folder to an iPod? I really am thinking of asking for an iPod for Christmas, but only if I think I’d really use it, which means I’d understand how to make it work with my MacBook.

  46. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:35 pm #

Twolilhahas, I LOVE brick and mortar dollar stores. So much so that I haven’t been to one in years. LOL Part of the fun is the hunt and never knowing what they’ll have that day. It’s the best place on earth to buy wrapping paper.

But I’m not going there to look. No way. $50 is getting out cheap!

  47. twolilhahas on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:41 pm #

Aren’t they a blast, Claudia? I truly love the ones where everything really is only $1. I spend so much, but it’s so much fun, and I get to leave with so many things.

  48. Michellynn on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:45 pm #

Claudia, transferring from iTunes to iPod is actually an option built in to iTunes. However, you probably won’t see it in your left hand iTunes menu until you have an iPod and connect it to your computer for the first time. When you connect your iPod to the computer, iTunes “senses” the connection and will then start to walk you through options for setting up how you want to load music on to your iPod (it will probably try to update the software on the iPod the first time as well).

At this point, once you get the connection setup, you will have an additional menu option in your iTunes “interface” (which is what you are accessing when you click on the toolbar to get to iTunes).
In there, you can select which playlists you want to be loaded on to the iPod. You can change and add to these at any time, and everytime you connect your iPod to the computer it will update based on your selections of what you want on the iPod.

  49. Michellynn on 26 Nov 2007 at 3:49 pm #

It sounds more complicated than it is.

You can actually set up playlists even if you don’t have the iPod. In the toolbar across the top of your iTunes interface, click on “File”, then “New Playlist”. You will then see a new playlist on the left hand side menu and you can name it whatever you want. After that…you can click and drag songs in to that playlist (just like clicking and dragging files around in your desktop folders).

  50. Caren Crane on 26 Nov 2007 at 4:17 pm #

Thanks, Cookiedough! I needed that connection like…okay, I didn’t need anything to waste time today. But I wanted it, so there! I am actually 29 pages from the end of my WIP, so I need to get writing. But it’s so much more interesting to talk about iTunes! ;-)

  51. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 5:05 pm #

Thanks, Michellynn. I can imagine what you’re saying and know that it would be easy to figure out because Apple does sort of lead you through the steps. I’m going to have to go to my local Apple store see the iPods up close. Can I resist? From what everyone else is saying, it doesn’t sound like it!

  52. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 5:07 pm #

Caren Crane, way to go on being in the final few on your WIP. Congrats!!!

  53. FreshEChelle on 26 Nov 2007 at 6:43 pm #

Oh iTunes! I resisted their siren’s song for years but I’m now hooked . I bought my video iPod a year ago and we’ve been happy together ever since. It’s eerily easy to launch an iPod my fellow techno-phobes. IPods don’t come with a lot of instructions, their idiot-proof to get started I promise (I’m impatient and love to complain, if it was hard, I’d be sounding off).

I’ve been able to download lots of obscure, indie releases that I had in my 80s vinyl collection. My fav all-time download is a TV show Strangers with Candy - watching it makes time on the treadmill or on flights go by fast. Fav recent downloads - Billy Preston’s Will it Go Round in Circles and Dean Martin’s version of I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face. Claudia, welcome to your new addiction. Time to go download that old Lisa Stansfield song and to find the Eartha version of Santa Baby. Thanks for the tip.

  54. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 6:54 pm #

FreshE, love to hear that iPods are idiot-proof since I’m pretty close to being a techno-idiot. I just wish iPods were cheaper! I also wish iPhones were cheaper since they’re on my Wish List as well.

If you’re going to download Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby (amazing), you might also love the 1958 live concert by Judy Garland where she sings The Man That Got Away. OMG. It gives me chills. So worth 99 cents.

  55. FreshEChelle on 26 Nov 2007 at 6:59 pm #

Ooohh!! Thanks for the suggestions. I’m on iTunes now. May I suggest a little Barbra from Funny Girl “My Man” and Cher’s “The Way of Love” (which is so cheesy it’s great!)?

  56. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 7:03 pm #

Oh, thanks for reminding me! I remember when I first heard My Man and how it was so moving. I’d forgotten all about that song!!

This would be a lot more fun if money wasn’t involved. LOL

  57. Debra on 26 Nov 2007 at 7:11 pm #

I am even worse than you (and my husband will be the first to say my music addiction has gone overboard). My addiction started with I tunes until my husband told me I had to stop downloading so many songs. Now I have moved onto Rhapsody where I pay a flat fee and download to my hearts content (without a per song charge). With over 10,000 songs and two MP3 player I have to concede that I have a problem, but I love being able to pull up whatever song I want and have it at the click of my mouse.

  58. FreshEChelle on 26 Nov 2007 at 7:30 pm #

ARGH!! iTunes Store won’t let me in. Some nonsense about a network connection. No way ‘coz I’m on the freakin’ internet. Judy and Eartha are just going to have to wait till this problem self-corrects ‘coz I sure don’t know how to fix it.

  59. FreshEChelle on 26 Nov 2007 at 7:58 pm #

Whew! Back in iTunes. Oh Claudia, last one I promise. Dusty Springfield’s Breakfast in Bed. Now all you goddesses need to create your own playlists on iTunes that we can download.

  60. Suzanne Enoch on 26 Nov 2007 at 8:31 pm #

Claudia, I love any version of “Frosty”. When I was a kid I always used to feel sorry for him because of the melting thing, but I’ve gotten over it.

  61. Claudia Dain on 26 Nov 2007 at 8:38 pm #

Suzanne, I felt the same way about Frosty. I also felt so sorry for Rudolph and wanted to kick reindeer butt for not letting him play in their reindeer games.

Debra, at 10,000 songs you have got to be the winner on the iTunes/Rhapsody addiction. I can feel the pull—being able to listen to whatever song you want at the touch of a finger. Yes, I can feel it…my precious!

FreshE, we can create our own playlists on iTune for others to download?! How??? Wait, don’t tell me! I don’t need another reason to traipse over to iTunes. LOL

  62. Aspen on 27 Nov 2007 at 12:18 am #

    A bit OFF TOPIC!
Did anyone see Ellen the other day? She spent Black Friday at the 99cent store. It was great. I especially liked the bit when she paid in pennies (Shaken out of a big pink piggy bank)

  63. Sabrina Jeffries on 27 Nov 2007 at 12:18 am #

Claudia, I can see we will need an Itunes tutoring session. :-) And if you want, next time I see you, I’ll bring my Ipod and laptop and show how it works with the computer.

    Just call me Tech Support.
