Pop Quiz

It’s been exactly one month since The Courtesan’s Daughter was released and to celebrate its one month birthday I thought a mini-questionnaire/contest was in order. This is like one of those dreaded high school quizzes where you have to choose the best answer from those listed, even if none of them seems to be exactly the right answer. The winner will receive an autographed copy of The Courtesan’s Daughter, and will be the one who answers the questions correctly, which is to say, as I would answer them.cover-girl.jpg

Kidding!

The winner will be the one who is the prettiest.

Still kidding.

The winner will be the one who wants it the most.

I can’t help myself. My birthday is this month and I’m going to be partying non-stop from now on. Just answer the questions and someone will get a copy of The Courtesan’s Daughter, no matter what you look like and no matter if you want it or not. How fair is that?

1) Favorite color: red, blue, or yellow

2) Favorite food: salty, sweet, or healthy

3) Favorite top: cotton, wool, or fleece180px-notebook_and_pen.jpg

4) Favorite drink: bitter, sweet, or healthy

5) Favorite movie: drama, comedy, or musical

6) Favorite romance: sweet, sexy, or suspenseful

7) Favorite hair color: blond, brunette, or redhead

8) Favorite jewelry: gold, silver, or pearls

9) Favorite romance setting: historical, contemporary, or futuristic

10) Least favorite activity: Dealing with the mail, driving in traffic, or going to a medical/dental appointment

Final challenge: include all of your personal choices (questions 1-10) in a short paragraph. Spelling counts. Ready? Begin!

Claudia, I have already read the Courtesan’s Daughter. So someone else will have a chance to win a copy. Loved it by the way. So I do want to answer your questionnaire.

My favorite color is red. I love wearing it when I am in the mood for attention and “It’s all about me”. My favorite food is French. Italian is a close second, so I’ll go with salty. I can wear cotton all year round. My favorite drink is water so that’s healthy. Movies I like dramas since you don’t have horror-they are my all time favoites then comedies. Romance has to be sexy all the way. Jewelry: Gold and gems:Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds with a hint of Diamonds. Least favorite activity: any medical appointments.

ElsieH, so glad to hear you enjoyed The Courtesan’s Daughter!

Your answers sound so much like mine, though my salty foods are more likely to be Doritos and Fritos. *G* I can’t say my favorite drink is water, though. I wish I could! It’s so healthy. I’ll work on that.

Now, as to a paragraph, any ideas? How about, “Elsie chose to wear a red cape to her OB/GYN appointment, rubies dripping from her toes, just to give Dr. Demento a cheap thrill when her feet hit those metal stirrups. If he made her appointment bearable, she just might invite him to dinner at Chez Fez and let him buy her champagne, which she would drink to the last drop. Let the dear doctor make do with water, poisoned, natch. She hated those stirrups and what he did with them.”

I like yellow because it is a happy color. I enjoy salty potato chips at the end of the day with my gin and tonic, I’m not sure why. I love to wear my Levi’s and a warm sweatshirt this time of year, which means I like cotton best. My favorite drink is Highlander Grogg with Bailey’s, it’s very warm, soothing and slightly sweet. I like watching romantic comedy’s because they help relieve stress with laughter. I also enjoy reading sexy historical romance with witty banter. I actually like brunette hair with a reddish tint, as the red adds sass and excitement. I mostly wear gold jewelry because my favorites are all gifts from my kids and husband and that is what they get me. I hate going to the doctor and dentist. Doesn’t everybody?

  4. amy1242 on 02 Nov 2007 at 8:15 am #

I’ll work on my story paragraph and get back to you. (I knew I couldn’t fit it all in in one reply. Too many words.)

    1) Favorite color: Blue
    2) Favorite food:sweet

    3) Favorite top: wool

    4) Favorite drink: healthy

    5) Favorite movie: comedy

    6) Favorite romance: sweet,

    7) Favorite hair color: brunette,

    Favorite jewelry: pearls

    9) Favorite romance setting: historical,

    10) Least favorite activity: driving in traffic,

While driving in traffic, the pretty brunette looked up at the blue sky as her mind began to wander. She imagined herself in the arms of a sweet man with a healthy love of comedy. When she arrived home, she put on a beautiful dress, pearls, and made herself a cup of tea. She then curled up with a historical novel under her soft wool blanket and lost herself in a world of humor, dashing sweet men and true love.

    1. Blue

    3. Cotton
    4. Sweet
    5. Comedy
    6. Sexy
    7. Brunette
    8. Gold
    9. Historical
    10. Driving in traffic

Recently, I had a date with my dh. We were going out to dinner and then to see a comedy at the movies. I pulled on my favorite cotton blue jeans and put on a sweet, sexy top. I spent forever fixing my brunette hair since it has a tendency to do whatever it wants. The outfit was finished off with a pair of gold hoop earrings. As I sat and waited for him to come home the phone rings. In a sweet voice he tells me he’s stuck driving in traffic and can we do it another night. Oh well, I grab a historical book and get swept away to another time and place.

I already have a copy of The Courtesan’s Daughter, which is good, because otherwise I would have felt compelled to do this quiz and it probably would have made my head explode. Ew.

Brandy was a haggard mail carrier. She hated dealing with the mail, although it paid well. She kept dreaming about the day one of those sexy, brunette heroes from the super-hot, sexy, historical romances she lived on would sweep her off her feet. She could see it in her mind’s eye. He would wear blue silk to cover his bulging muscles and lavish upon her gifts of the purest gold. She would wear her softest, new cotton dress and go to dinner with him. He’d order for her something salty to eat and sweet to drink because he knew what she loved. Then he would take her to the movies and they would watch a hilarious comedy. After the movie, things would get spicy. Then Brandy woke up and realized that she had no idea if she’d put mail in the right boxes for the last ten, and she hated dealing with mail even more. lol

Claudia - Ever since I saw the lego drama I have been dying to read your book. Here is my entry:

    1. Red
    2. Salty
    3. Cotton
    4. Sweet
    5. Drama
    6. Sexy
    7. Blonde
    8. Gold
    9. Historical
    10. Traffic

The tall blonde pirate swaggered slowly to me. His sexy dark eyes were accented with flecks of gold. The drama of the moment was not lost upon me as he bent slowly to kiss my waiting lips… He tasted like the sea, salty, yet sweet. The blood red sun dipped below the horizon, reavealing the historical ocean vacant from all other traffic. I slipped my hands around his neck, my fingers brushing the rough cotton of his tunic. Still he kissed me, my knees weakened. At last we pulled apart, “I’m yours,” I said. He looked at me like a starving shark and replied, “Damn right.”

    Happy Birthday this month, Claudia!

  11. Claudia Dain on 02 Nov 2007 at 9:49 am #

Oh, Sonja F, please do the quiz. I’m in the exact right mood to enjoy seeing a head explode! LOL

You guys are so funny. Of course we all hate dealing with the mail, driving in traffic, and medical appts—that’s why it’s a tough quiz! No easy answers, my darlings.

I love these little mini-stories! Keep ‘em coming, ladies. Is this a fun way to spend a Friday or what?

Oooh, LisaH, you do like them sexy!

  12. dbrown3400 on 02 Nov 2007 at 12:44 pm #

Not wanting to waste her time making a list, Logan donned her Cerulean blue, fleece sweater and prepared to go to the supermarket hoping to avoid the sweet candy and even sweeter drinks she loved. She knew the food choices would be difficult now as her life was filled with drama, much like her favorite movie, “Mystic River”. The flick was like her life at the moment, suspenseful and fraught with fear, more real to her than any of the romances she read. Always a blond, she now brushed her silver hair that was quite different from the gold jewelry she preferred. Although she preferred historical settings in her novels she knew she must face the current stacks of mail on her dining room table when she returned.

  13. Claudia Dain on 02 Nov 2007 at 1:16 pm #

    Oh, DBrown, brava!!! Such fun!

Twolilhahas, I love your dream sequence!

Looks like we’re almost evenly divided on the least favorite category. I have to say that, if I have a drink with me, good music to entertain me, and comfortable sunglasses, I would mind traffic the least. The thing I hate about med/dental is all the waiting. Ugh. They need to do something about that. My time is worth something, too!

  14. Freshechelle on 02 Nov 2007 at 2:04 pm #

While eating my salad, I am lamenting the absence of salt on these cashews - why can’t I have pasta for lunch everday? My day is already off to a less than stellar start because the wool in my great new red jacket isn’t cotton. I continue to avoid my job when I see that a red-headed goddess (who wears red well according to her pic) wants me to scratch out a paragraph - what am I? Tolstoy. Nervously, I tug on Grandma’s cheap plastic pearls while I contemplate how to write a suspenseful scene infused with comic relief about a contemporary chick who is flawed but lovely. It’s enough to drive me to drink, but then I’d have to pullover and this facial-tick inducing traffic won’t let me budge. I need the juice of a few grapes, maybe a sweet Italian dessert wine will help me focus.

    1) Favorite color: blue

    2) Favorite food: sweet

    4) Favorite drink: sweet

    5) Favorite movie: comedy

    6) Favorite romance: sexy

    7) Favorite hair color: blond

    8) Favorite jewelry: silver

    9) Favorite romance setting: historical

    10) Least favorite activity: going to a medical/dental appointment

I was on my way to a dental appointment because I had eaten too much sweet candy for Halloween. I pulled into the parking lot fifteen minute early and grabbed my blue purse with my favorite historical romance to keep my busy while I waited for my appointment to start. I walked into the waiting room and there was an old comedy playing on the silver television in the corner. I pulled out my book and reading and before I knew it someone startled me by calling my name. I looked up and saw a sexy blond in cotton scrubs smiling at me and he led me to the back room. At that moment I was very thankful I had indulged into too many sweets.

  16. Kasey on 02 Nov 2007 at 2:20 pm #

Claudia - this was a fun contest. I haven’t read The Courtesan’s Daughter yet (too busy with school work lately), but I can’t wait to read it.

Hello Claudia (and the rest)! I just registered because I couldn’t resist longer (I’ve been lurking for a looong time), so this serves as a sort of an introduction as well! :)

    1) blue
    2) sweet
    3) wool
    4) sweet
    5) drama
    6) sweet
    7) blond
    8 ) silver
    9) historical
    10) going to a medical/dental appointment

Everybody’s always telling me what a sweet girl I am. I guess it must be so, because I LOVE everything sweet, I could live on chocolate and hot chocolate only (it’s healthy, sort of!). My life is full of drama though, so I love nothing better than curling up with a good historical under my blue woolen blanket. I don’t drive, nor do I get any mail *cries* so going to the dentist’s is really the most awful thing that could happen to me (if you ignore the drama part). Oh, and my hair is blond and my eyes are silvery blue (like every other girl in Finland (where I’m from)), just in case you wondered!

I was driving down a quaint English road in my red Austin Healey, popping Reese’s Cups like they were M&Ms when I saw a tall, gorgeous Greek god of a man with brunette hair and eyes the color of fresh brewed Earl Gray before you add the cream and sugar that makes it real English tea. I drove by slowly, not a problem as there was no traffic at all on the road, and took a nice long look. He was wearing a tight cotton t-shirt and even tighter jeans. I was almost past him when he winked, a slow sexy I know you are looking wink.I could have just driven on by, but the suspense was killing me. I pulled over and when he trotted up to the car I saw his t-shirt was from Shaun of the Dead, my favorite movie. “Great shirt,” I said. “Great car,” he said. I opened the door and he slid into the seat. “Where are you going?” I asked. He touched the silver framed cameo at my throat. “Wherever you want.” The rest, was historical. No, ladies, not history - HISTORICAL!!!!

  20. Freshechelle on 02 Nov 2007 at 3:41 pm #

Brava, doglady!! I’ll write Claudia’s name in a copy of her book and send it you if you aren’t the victor.

  21. Claudia Dain on 02 Nov 2007 at 3:54 pm #

Oh my gosh, I’m LOL. You ladies are so good at this! Next time I need cover copy…get ready to rumble!

This is going to be tough! I love them all; British guy with Shawn of the Dead shirt (love that movie!), sexy blond in cotton scrubs (if only my dentist looked like that, though I can’t see much beyond his mask), hot chocolate blond from Finland (hello alarwyn! welcome to the party!), Tolstoy in Training…

    Isn’t writing fun? LOL

  22. Karen Hawkins on 02 Nov 2007 at 4:13 pm #

Man oh man, these are AWESOME! Doglady, I want an Austin Healey. Or the guy. One or the oth– Ok, just the guy would do. He sounds delish!

  23. Julia London on 02 Nov 2007 at 4:16 pm #

Actually, I’m feeling a little threatened. These are excellent! Just don’t go writing historicals, people!

  24. Ellen on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:13 pm #

THANK GAWD I was on the road all day. I would have posted ALL day long.

    Ahem….

Ellen saw red as she sat in traffic, late for her doctor’s appointment. She grabbed the half empty bag of Cool Ranch Doritos and momentarily considered the historic proportions of her growing ass. With a shrug, she finished off the bag and secretly wished she had a bottle of Chardonnay to wash away the aftertaste. Traffic was going nowhere so she pulled down the mirror and examined her new Juzie London hairdo…unfortunately; she looked more like a redheaded Cameron Diaz. All of the sudden she smacked her forehead, causing her platinum ring to leave a mark, and yelled, “OMG…the doctor is going to know I’m really a brunette!”

  25. AnnaSwede on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:17 pm #

I feel a bit blue, because my golf round this afternoon didn’t go very well. The golf course took its sweet time, so I’m glad I put on an extra cotton sweater, because it was cold out. Even though some shots were nice and sweet my bunker shots looked like they belonged in a bad comedy. I didn’t see any sexy, blond men on the course either, so the afternoon was a complete waste. I’ll never win a gold medal in golf the way I play! If I ever do it will be a historical day in my life. To top it of I need to get a medical appointment for my sore shoulders. That was my day. I hope yours were better!

    Anna

  26. MsHellion on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:43 pm #

Once upon a time there was a pirate named Hellion who loved the color blue—therefore, oceans and blue-eyed heroes were her favorite things, as well as salty food, to go with her salty mouth. Every night, Hellion would don her favorite cotton pirate pjs, grab her favorite sweet drink, Pepsi, then settle down to watch a movie. (Drama was her favorite, especially North & South. Richard Armitage was hunky.) This movie had all the makings of Hellion’s favorite sort of romance: sexy, sexy, sexy. It would be perfect if the heroine had been a redhead, since clearly, they rule. Afterwards, Hellion would check to make sure the servants had polished all of Hellion’s silver bling-bling. Then she’d go to bed, dreaming of her favorite romantic setting and getaway: a historical Scottish castle. Of course, her sweet dreams were ruined the next morning when she realized she had a medical appointment because she knew she’d have to lie to her doctor again about how she was not eating salty food. The end.

  27. twolilhahas on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:51 pm #

Thanks, Claudia. As a new mail carrier, I just couldn’t resist! LOL

  28. Lisa H on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:55 pm #

Ellen- I say that very thing everytime I see my OBGYN!

I feel like I should buy you the book for just being you!

  29. Sabrina Jeffries on 02 Nov 2007 at 5:58 pm #

Y’all are so creative! I started to write one, then realized I REALLY needed to write on my novella. Darn that day job! :-)

  30. Claudia Dain on 02 Nov 2007 at 6:38 pm #

    Wow!!!

    Wow!

I’m in awe. It just keeps getting better and better. Everyone look the other way—I’m going to copy off your paper. *G*

Ellen, I think “those” doctors meet mostly brunettes. The shock value has *got* to be gone by now for them. LOL I wondered where you were all day since I figured this pop quiz was right up your Skill Alley. And why didn’t I think of platinum?

Anna, you blend your info in like a pro! I completely agree; not seeing any blond sexy men is a complete waste of a day, golf or not.

Hellion, you are SO right. Not only do redheads rule, but so does salty food, particularly of the Frito variety.

Sabrina, admit it, you don’t want to post a paragraph because the company is so intimidating. That’s exactly how I feel! Julia’s right—you all need to stay away from writing historicals.

    Please?

I’d love to have the math skills (and the patience) to break these preferences down.

There seems to be a lot of red lovers and are we equally divided between sweet and salty on the food? FYI, I think of coffee and tea as bitter drinks, in case you were wondering.

Is anyone seeing a pattern among the goddesses?

  33. twolilhahas on 02 Nov 2007 at 7:54 pm #

Crystal sat on a bench snuggled into her favorite fleece top and watched the setting sun turn the evening sky a fiery red. She absentmindedly stroked the Brunette locks of the male seated next to her while munching from a bag of Kettle Corn. She offered a handful to him with another stroke of his hair, an offer which was quietly accepted. Then she opened her bottle of Diet Coke and took a healthy swig, belching softly. Silently, Crystal contemplated the comedy that was her romantic life. Turning to her companion, she tugged on the gold chain around his neck, and looked into his velvet brown eyes, enjoying his companionable silence. Why couldn’t her romances with other men be this sweet, she wondered. She didn’t need macho, she just wanted a man straight out of a historical romance novel. Impossible, she knew, but she couldn’t help wanting it. Sighing, she stood up and tugged on the gold chain again. “C’mon,” she said. “The traffic should be clear enough by now. I hate dealing with those idiots!” Her companion stood as well. Then he wagged his tail, woofed softly, and eagerly followed his human to her car.

Eve’s long RED hair was swept back under the hood of her favorite COTTON sweatshirt. She loved the color of her hair it just was too distinguishable for a stakeout. She had driven an hour through New York TRAFFIC to complete her mission and there was nothing she hated more than driving through traffic. Her SILVER bracelet jangled slightly as she positioned her camera. Her stomach growled. It had been 6 hours since her late lunch of snickers and cola. The camera was set up and now all she had to do was wait. As a kid she used to watch soap operas with her mom. She loved the SUSPENCE and DRAMA of them. That is why she loved her job so much. “Click”

Today I wore a yellow shirt (1) to work and snacked all day on chocolate (2) that I snuck from my children’s Halloween treats. They won’t miss it, trust me. My yellow cotton shirt (3) and comfy cotton jeans were perfect for a Friday dress down day & stayed on while I watched my favorite musical (4) Sound of Music, while I cooked dinner. After we ate, I sat down to a sexy romance (5) while my hubby played with my curly brown tresses (7). I took a short break from reading to hint once again about cameo ring set in a simple gold band (8) that I wanted for Christmas. After rubbing his shoulders while I described the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen, I grabbed up my historical romance (9) settling in on the couch for the evening and ignoring the bills (10) that came in the mail!

I want that book! I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t been to the bookstore in over a month. Well, 2 weeks ago I was at a used bookstore and was able to pick up a few of your other books! This was fun, thanks!

Aspen, I love how you used red in two categories. Way to work it!

I really think that red is the favorite color, at least when competing against blue and yellow, the other primary colors. I never would have guessed. I thought blue was going to be the stand-out.

Twolilhahas, you got me. I hadn’t thought of sweet tea, but it sure isn’t bitter!

I’ll post the winner of the contest Saturday, November 3.

It was a gorgeous sunny, fall day. The sky was a beautiful, cerulean blue with lots of fluffy, white clouds that looked like puffs of cotton. I grabbed my favorite cottonT shirt, my historical romance novel and headed for the beach. I ony had two hours to relax before my annual doctor’s appointment. Upon reaching the beach, I felt my problems drift away on one of the numerous, indigo blue waves. AHHHHHHH!! I settled into my reading. Only to be rudely interupted by a man landing on my lap!! Oh My God!! This athletic man had it all :broad shoulders, dark brown hair, blue, blue! bedroom eyes, a 6 pack of ABS and a killer smile! He was better than chocolate, better than ice cream. I was in heaven! I felt like my fairy godmother had waved her golden wand and blessed me with my fantasy man.
I forgot my paragraph above. I’ll leave the writing to all of you!!

My birthday is also in November, 16th! Isn’t that cool?

Last night I dreamed about a perfect day.
I woke up next to a gorgeous, brown haired, strong and sensual man, who asked me if I wanted to go shopping. Shopping, with that hunk, that would definitly be a YES! I took my favorite blue cotton top and my best jeans and we went. First stop, a bookshop of course! But he wouldn’t let me buy any books. What a nightmare! Just as bad as driving in traffic.
What I didn’t know is that he wanted to buy just the right book for me, a sexy and historical romance. And he found it: The courtesan’s daughter by Claudia Dain. In the afternoon we ate an ice cream, drank something deliciously sweet and went to the movies. A comedy. We laughed and laughed and I thought the day couldn’t get any better… Until we got home. He took a package out of his car and presented it to me with that sexy smile of his. I opened it and found the perfect book for me with a beautiful silver necklace around it…
