You can watch the show, I’m just here for the ads!

Karen HawkinsMy Life As A Plebe
I love funny ads. I love them more than most shows.
I’m one of those people who watch the Superbowl for the funny ads, like this one. (Of course, if the Packers ever make it to the SB again, I’ll actually stay in the room for the game parts, too, but that’s another blog for another day.)
Today, I’m all about ads. Like this one for beer. This one, for a fairly common product you see in every checkout lane in America. And this one, where not a single word is spoken, but we all get the message.
I love ads because they often represent some part of our fantasy life, or an exaggeration of our real life. And sometimes they just make a very smile-worthy point. The time it takes to watch an ad? Thirty seconds. The Value? Priceless.
I inherited my love of ads from my dad. I can’t count the number of times he’d swoop into the house and screech like an old woman, “Where’s the BEEF?”, which would make us all laugh hysterically. And don’t even get me started on how well he could do the Taco Bell chihuahua.
What about you? Do you like funny ads? Which ones tickle you the most? Have you ever bought a product because the commercial made you laugh?

The BEST beer ad is this one - it’s from Down Under, so you probably missed it.

lillipilli i agree
i’m from Australia so i find it hilarious when you realise the similarities of australian men regarding their relationship with beer…
this is a bit stupid…but my favourite ads are the “Huggies” ones…with the little babies running across the screen doing something funny… ehehehe cracks me up everytime.
SuzyQ on 12 Oct 2007 at 7:29 am #
Karen, I’m like you – I love the Superbowl ads. In fact, I spend time in the kitchen getting food while the game is on so I won’t miss the commercials.
One of my favorites was the Terry Tate ads where he is the office linebacker tackling anyone who is goofy off.
Keri Ford on 12 Oct 2007 at 7:41 am #
funny ads are great! I love them. My BIL reminds me and DH of the not so smart guy in the Sonic ads. (the one with the two guys). He looks just like him, sounds like, and on occasion, acts like him.
but my faves are the Budwiser commercials where they have the horses and the dalmations. Those are too cute to not fall all over
MarthaH on 12 Oct 2007 at 7:42 am #
lillipilli, I have to agree tha add was great. Ads these days are really creative, but I have to say that one of the funniest commercials I’ve seen is called “woman driver”

Always makes me LOL

Fun blog topic, KarenH!!
I first saw this group of ads when Kay showed them to me - The Trunk Monkey series. They’re hilarious. Here’s my favorite - any parent with a daughter old enough to date should have one of these:

The one with the woman trying to bribe the cop into not giving her a ticket is a hoot, too.

Ellen on Ads
Very interesting topic. You see, I’m an evolved beast when it comes to ads because of the decade I was born to. The children of the sixties were forced to watch ads for one undisputable reason: There were NO REMOTE CONTROLS! (I just shuddered)
Now, I know half the goddesses in this room are going to picture me riding to school on the back of a brontosaurus, but it really wasn’t that long ago that the ONLY black and white TV in my home did not have a remote. As a matter of fact, the youngest sibling of seven was usually forced to sit next to the television with a tin foil wrapped wire hanger to ensure a better picture. (Age had its privileges) To this day, she still gets punchy during electrical storms…go figure.
So, the moment an ad comes on, I switch over to another channel. I love my remote control more than….chocolate carrot cake!
doglady on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:17 am #
As the proud owner of a chihuahua, who thinks he is a Rottweiler, the Taco Bell commercials are a big hit at my house. I too love the Budweiser ads with the Dalmations, especially the one where to puppy that didn’t get picked for the fire house and ended up on the Budweiser wagon and sticks his tongue out at his brother. I don’t know if everyone has them, but we have one where California cows are playing Marco Polo. There is a whole series with these cows and they just make me laugh. Anything with animals gets me. My Mom loves the Geico gecko and the Aflac duck. And, by the way, Ellen, I remember the days of black and white tv, no remote and the foil wrapped coat hanger as well. My youngest brother was the antenna. He now has cable, satellite and an actual antenna attached to the house that most tv stations would envy. Go figure!

Funny ads are the only ads worth watching. I’m always amazed to by weak commercials that make me scratch my head saying “someone was paid to write that garbage” i.e., the Empire floors jingle, the Newsday (LI newspaper) jingle, that horrid “free credit report dot com” song - really? Someone is putting their kid through college on that junk? They didn’t event try to make a quality product.
I searched through my e-mail for the link to a brilliant Spanish (?) Coca Cola spot with a beatiful girl on spotting an Adonis coming out of the surf. He approaches her with his amazing body and gorgeous face while she’s enjoying her Coke. I’m not going to spoil the end in case a fellow blogger has the link.

FreshEChelle on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:29 am #
Karen, that’s what makes it so good. It makes you feel “caught doing something bad”.
Cookiedough on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:46 am #
oh my the tabs I have open just trying to watch all the ads!
I like ads so much that even fast forwarding through my show, if something flashes, I’ll go back and watch the ad. Here in Canada, we have these great ads that run. no youtube link, but here is the company’s ad site..use the tv remote
http://www.bicks.ca/en/media.aspx
It’s my favourite
Gannon on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:51 am #
OMG, Fresh! That was hilarious, even though, like Karen, I was waiting for the lightning to strike!
SuzyQ, my whole family loves Terry Tate. We quote him all the time—”you kill the joe, you make some mo’!”
My younger son even calls himself the “pain train” when he’s playing football!
I still love the part when Terry’s blessing that guy out he knocked on the floor, and when the woman says hi, Terry says, “Hey Janice” in that sweet voice and then turns back to the guy and starts back on him! So funny!

Doglady…how funny is it that we both identified a practical use for those pesky younger siblings!
Karen Hawkins on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:52 am #
BWHAHAHAHAHAHA! Lillipilli, that’s hysterical!!! I’m going to email it to my DH. He’s a guy and he’ll love it.
pri, I have an Aussie friend and he told me that “Beer is life’s lubricant. I can live without it, but I’d be chaffed.” He’s quite a colorful guy and every time I run into him, I leave giggling.
SuzyQ — I LOOKED for that ad and couldn’t find a good copy. Some of the youtubes are very blurry. I love that one and my dad always laughed SO hard at it.
Keri, I love the Budweiser Christmas ads where the Clydesdales are trotting through the snowy forest. I should have mentioned cuddly ads, too! My bad.
Martha H, how FUNNY! I wonder what they’re advertising, though? Not that it matters — the ad’s priceless!
Karen Rose, I loooove the trunk monkey! Isn’t that hysterical?
Ellen and doglady? Tin foil on a coat hanger? I don’t know WHAT you’re talk— Ok, ok. I, too, had to stand beside the TV and hold a coat hanger over my head. But I loved commercials even back then.
FreshEChelle on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:55 am #
Cookie - those ads are brilliant.
Cookiedough on 12 Oct 2007 at 8:59 am #
yes, we youngest of many (7) siblings are the antennas of the world. I have the most electronics among my siblings now too and have to go in to program everyone’s equipment.
Now admit it Karen, you just posted this topic as a way to see everyone else’s fav ads, didn’t you?
I’m finding myself on youtube now looking for ads to share. my friend from England and I spent two hrs instant messaging each other ads from our respteive countries acouple of weeks ago.

Oh my gosh, FreshEchelle, that’s the essence of Guilty Pleasure, isn’t it? Lol! I did NOT see that coming! But yes, DEFINITELY a good FROS. Wonder if we should do a Sexy Men of the Cloth one week? Hmmm.
cookiedough, how clever! Online ads are getting to be so much more popular, too. It’s neat how many things they had on that one screen. “Brilliant!” as they say in the Guinness ad.
Ok, Suzyq, you found a great, clear copy of the Terry Tate ads! THANK YOU I looked at about five and they were all blurry, so I decided to go with another example. I’m so glad you posted that! The announcer/CEO makes that work — he seems so civilized!

Let’s play a quick game of “Who remembers.”
-Mutual of Omaha: “Like the mother bear protecting her cub, so should you protect your family. Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance.”
-“More Park Sausages Mom! PLEASE?”
-“Chick Chick Chickerina Soup. It has meatballs so delicious. And the soup is so nutritious. Chick Chick Chickerina Soup!” (I had a crush on the boy singing into his transistor radio)
-“I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.”
-“Momma Mia that’s a speecy meatball.”
OR MY FAVORITE….The Drake Cup Cake Commercial. I cannot remember any of the dialog; just the image. They show a chocolate cup cake filled with fluffy white whipped cream, dipped into a river (I swear!) of dark chocolate.

OK, here’s one for you Ellen - how about the Dr. Pepper man? He was the same guy who played in An American Werewolf in London.
Karen, did you see the one where Terry is on vacation? Sooo funny.

Karen H., just might need to run, don’t walk, to the confessional whether or not you’re Catholic!
Ellen - Love your game I remember all but the Chicker soup. I just got home from Venice, IT and all the laundry hanging from the windows made me think of Wednesday is Prince Spaghetti day - “Anthony!” Drake’s makes cupcakes too , their Yankee Doodles. Dad was a driver for them. No, we rarely had them in the house and yet, still I have thighs only Devil Dogs can give a girl.

I love the local ads - the ones so bad they make you wince, years later. I did a take-off on local ads in DIE FOR ME - one of the victims was in an ad that every local person remembered - because it was so bad.
When I lived in Cinci, we had the Buy-Rite Kid - and his band. Jug band… He sold furniture for the low, low price of 19.99. And I recall his wife was semi-abusive, only making him a frozen cookie for dinner.
I grew up in the MD burbs of DC and there was an add for a local martial arts studio. At the end, he has these CUTE kids (his grandkids maybe?) saying “Nobody bothers me.” and “Nobody bothers me, either.” Then one of the kids winks. SO CUTE! Me and DH can still sing that song in its entirety - and we do so when we want to annoy our children. Works every time.
And there was the Marlo Showroom ad “Ten million cubic feet of furniture, accessories and so much more!!!” I’m singing it as I type.
FUN
Cookiedough on 12 Oct 2007 at 9:15 am #
Now I’m remembering the “we’re having beef- a-roni!” ads that ran on Saturday morning cartoon time.
We also tended to watch a lot of US tv growing up ,so we got all the ads. Oh how I wanted a Little Debbie anything.
I’ve been watching the mac uk ads on youtube…not going to get any work done today!
Karen Rose on 12 Oct 2007 at 9:17 am #

Heh heh! Good one, cookiedough! And yes, I was hoping you all would entertain me today with luscious links to hysterical commercials! My evil plan has been discovered! Muhahahahahaha!
Ellen, I remember all of those except the chicken soup and cupcake commercial, though I’m dying to see the cupcake commercial now. A RIVER of chocolate? Yes, PLEASE!
SusyQ, I loved the Dr. Pepper man! I’m a pepper, she’s a pepper, he’s a pepper, wouldn’t you like to be a pepper too! I also loved the 7-Up Yours man. Teehee! I’ll have to go can check out Terry on vacation and see if I remember that one. Those are awesome!

KH - I’m not C. either which maybe why I get such a rush from that ad. Venice is incredible. Get away from Piazza San Marco crowds and walk to and around the old Jewish Quarter area - it’s cool, quieter and feels more “local”. The water taxis are expensive but worth it. Where are you staying? Our hotel, the San Clementi was on a separate island. It’s a former monastery, then a former asylum for hysterical women - hah!
Sorry to go off topic folks but you know the most recent converts (to Italy in this case) are the most zealous.

Karen Rose, that is a horrible commercial! We have a guy here in Orlando who runs a place called Appliance Direct who is horrible, too, but you can’t help but watch . . . and grin. I love the way he says WHITE PORCELAIN as if he’s invented it. Cracks me up every time.
And Fresh, the best looking guy I’ve ever seen was in Florence in 96. He was walking down the street and I was escorting a group of college students who all stopped dead in their tracks. He was wearing an perfectly fitted Italian suit and dark gray overcoat and the wind was blowing like in a commercial. Wow. He was smoking hot — all dark hair and eyes and WHAT a smile. After he walked past, one of the girls looked at me and said in a fervent tone, “Ms. Hawkins, THANK YOU for broadening my horizons.” Lol!

Okay–I’m joining in late, but who remembers the commercial for Diet Coke when the ladies are all standing by their office window watching the hot construction worker take off his shirt and drink a Diet Coke ( I think he kindof looked like James Denton from Desperate Housewives)
I also love the old Coke commericial they played at Christmas time in the 70’s “I’d like to teach the world to sing…in perfect harmony” Brings back so many happy memories of Christmas time as a little girl when Grandma and Grandpa were still alive…okay I am going now…..sniff sniff

Kay on 12 Oct 2007 at 2:30 pm #
Ads have little impact on me, otherwise the Trunk Monkey would have me buying a very different kind of car. LOL
Same thing for pet food. Some of those commercials are TOO CUTE, but my pets have to have special food–one dog needs geriatric, one dog eats a special grain-free blend, the cat got used to a special wet food that our old, sick cat needed before she died. I think they eat better than I do.
I remember a story my mom told me to justify NEVER buying what I whined for after seeing it on TV. Back in the day, her family had favorite RADIO programs. Hers was sponsored by Ovaltine. She was a chocolate addict at a young age, and harassed her poor mother, who was running a farm and raising 8 kids, that my mom could not live without Ovaltine. Money was tight, but her mom bought it. My mom hated it! She had to drink it every day until it was gone. I never got new stuff I begged for.

Cookie…..I had tears in my eyes, and I don’t even know your family. What a great gift.
Please tell us all how to do this. My DH will be 50 in a couple of years. I would love to do this for him!

I am in there by the way. I’m the little girl in the ugly yellow striped housecoat at Xmas, and in the shot with four of us, with two whacked out sisters, I’m in the back grinning.

Cookiedough, that was a beautiful tribute to your brother. I loved the part of him holding the new baby and kissing her head. Very sweet!

Make sure you post it tomorrow so that all the G’s who have signed off get to see it. We can make you Director of Goddess Marketing.
“All in favor say Hey!”
“Hey,” yelled Lisa H
“Say Hey!” yelled Ellen.
You are hereby Director of Goddess Marketing (unless otherwise impeached for behavior unbecoming a Goddess…however…with the Blogs I’ve seen, I can’t image what could be considered unbecoming at this point!)

Wow, Cookie! Loved both of your videos! I’m lucky if I manage to convince my photos to travel down the little wire from my camera into my computer, let alone DO something cool like that!

Great job, Cookiedough! This was just the kind of relaxation I needed after a long day working in the bakery with an all female crew. EEEEEK! Okay, the Catholic diet Coke commercial was SO WRONG on so many levels and brother, I mean, Father, was he cute or what???? Glad I’m not Catholic or I would be saying Hail Marys til Judgement. Oh, and the relaxing bath?? I would snatch that beer bottle and beat him brutally about the head and shoulders with it! Ladies, he would have to be REALLY GOOD in bed before I let him get away with a stunt like that. Hey, I’m a widow! I have standards . . . I’m pretty sure . . . there around here . . . somewhere.
