OOOOOH! This is so interesting! So many different answers!
I’ve got to do this! I’m reading Harry Potter right now, but have a grand total of 27 books awaiting their turn when I get done.
1.a) Like it’s been through a way. Gotta bend those spines!
2. c) Contemporaries and historicals.
3.a) mystery, C) fantasy, D) adventure, e) biographies. and g) historical research books
4. b) everywhere. I never travel without a book.
5. c) I can’t hear anything when I read!
6. f) all of it. I love humor, emotional tugs, paranormal, mystery — anything and everything, so long as there’s some romance in there.
7. 5 per month, 3-4 are romances. I read even more in non-deadline months.
8. I’d love to see more HUMOR in the romances I read. I love to laugh!
9. Can’t answer. I likes ‘em the way they are now.
10. I read romance because it makes me smile and lets me escape life for a while. AND, of course, HEAs!!!!

1. B) Like brand new, however I re-read my favorites many times over
2. A) Historicals only
3. C) Mystery
4. B) I read everywhere
5. C) A book and nothing else - I can read anywhere
6. A) Mystery & B) Humor
7. I read anywhere from 10 to 15 books per month
8. I’d love to see more strong female characters in non traditional roles
9. Less what? Nothing
10. I love to read historical/regency romances. Why? I guess because it’s a glimpse into another era - costumes, manorisms and cultures. It’s enjoyable escapism with happy endings.
dbrown3400 on 04 Oct 2007 at 8:20 am #
1} Like it’s brand new. I can reread and they look the same way, although some of the new bindings don’t hold up well.
I’d love to see more humor, originality and action in some of the romances I read now.
2) Both
3) Mystery, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, paranormal
4) Everywhere
5) c
6) f - especially those where you lol when you least expect it. Some mystery keeps a book exciting and uber sensuality is good. I don’t want a sprinkling of paranormal in a book in another category. I want paranormals that are defined as such.
7} I usually read 15 or so books per month. Of these most are romance.
9) I wish there was less of the “same feeling” in the romance novels I read now.
10) The main reason I read romance is for the storyline. I guess the HEA doesn’t hurt either.

Great quiz! Here goes!
1) b - but not because I don’t reread. Books are sacred in my house. Handled
with care!
2) c - Although the majority of the books I read are historicals, I do read some
contemporaries when the authors are really good
3) a,c,d,e,f,g - At one time or another, I read a little of everything!
4) b - I read anywhere and everywhere I get the chance
5) c - I can read through anything! I don’t hear a thing!
6) a,b,c,d,e, - not necessarily all at once, but any of those, if done well!
7) Twenty per month and I would say 18 of those are romance
9) Hmm, nothing I can think of. I am a hedonist. I want more of everything!
10) To relax, escape, recharge my batteries and now that I am writing - for
research. That’s my story and I am sticking to it!
Julia London on 04 Oct 2007 at 9:20 am #

Julia, for me redundancy in sequels means it’s the same storyline and plot with different names on the characters. I think authors that have long running series, like Christine Feehan can fall prey to that repetitiousness of plot. A couple of Laurell K’s were formulaic like that too…and thankfully she came back from it with a WOW. Every book needs to strike a punch, when it is in a series. And involving the characters from the previous books is always a plus, to me. I think it gives the author a real chance to either tie up some loose ends, or explore some more plot where there wasn’t time or energy for it in the last book.
Dot C on 04 Oct 2007 at 10:44 am #
hmm, i forgot to recommend a fantastic series from Stephen Donaldson which makes stellar use of beginning a plot, then depening it, and really expounding on it’s characters to wring every last drop of reality from them.
God I hated the first book, but i stuck with it because i love the author. He’s just amazing, and give it a try. It’s called The Real Story, and it is Sci Fi as opposed to Fantasy. Very gritty, but by the last book, you will be blown away. That is the mark of a great series, even if the series is simply related books. It’s when that next book makes each previous read even that much better, and that last book is a climax all by itself. LOL

Very interesting answers!
And Dot, I’ll look up Stephen Donaldson. Have you tried the Honor Harrington books written by David Weber? I’ve read one and really enjoyed it, but haven’t gotten to the others yet.

1. b) I never crease, fold or bend a book. That’s just me but I lend my books out and I don’t mind or care if they are returned to me creased. Just as long as I have read the book first. Crazy, huh?
2. c) Historicals are and will always be my first love. Contempraries are ok.
3. g) other because after Historicals I love Paranormals. I am riding the wave with it, right now, because 15 years ago you could barely find one. So I’m soaking it up until it dies out.
4. a) In bed before I go to sleep. I can’t read during the day so I read right after the 11:00pm news for about 2 hours.
5. c) a book, the TV on, people around me talking etc it doesn’t matter because when I’m in the zone I don’t hear anything around me.
6. Humor. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that had a lot of humor in it and that made me laugh out loud. Not just fun or funny moments but that had a lot of humor in it.
elsiehogarth on 04 Oct 2007 at 11:25 am #

I think by repitition some of the ladies may mean the “usual” plot
Nobleman falls in love with the governess
Two people are forced into a marraige, they finally fall in love
Handsome rake with plain spinster
Scandal bringing people together
I honestly don’t mind repitition if its well done, but I do love when an author breaks the mold like Laura Kinsale’s “Shadow and the Star” or Connie Brockway’s “All Through the Night” even my favorite, “Shanna” by KEW about a women in the Caribbean.

1–B–Like New!!
2–A–Historicals Only
3–I guess G–Romance is the only genre that I read
4–B–Everywhere. When I buy a new purse/bag it HAS to be big enough to hold a novel.

6–F–Anything as long as it is not boring
7–4 books per month. All 4 are romance
8–Can’t think of anything!
9–Same as #8. Can’t think of anything!

2. I normally read historicals only.
3. I also read Sci-Fi and fantasy.
4. I read everywhere; I am rarely without a book.
5. To read, I need a book and a decent amount of quiet.
6. I love romances that have all of the above (except paranormal).
7. I usually read 2-3 books per month. (A caveat: after my 3rd child was born in May I’ve had very little time to read.)
8. I’d love to see more wounded heroes/heroines in the romances novels I read now. The first novel I read where the hero had a disability (he was blind) simply blew me away.
9. I wish there were less deus ex machina in the romance novels I read now. I will never forgive the author who solved the whole series by bringing in the hero’s long-lost apparently greedy great-aunt in the last 3 chapters.
10. The main reason I read romance is the warm fuzzy feeling you get when it’s all over.

Meg, the strong willed v. annoying heroine factor is a tough line to walk, and your comments are duly noted!
You guys read so many more books per month than I do. I’ve been put to shame!
I’ll compile this and we’ll post it somewhere for you guys to see. VERY interesting quiz! I think what’s surprised me the most is what people want more of and what people want less of. This is especially interesting to me, from a writer’s perspective.
Thank you guy so much for sharing!!!

FreshEChelle on 04 Oct 2007 at 7:34 pm #
1 - a. My books take mass transit, fly on planes, wait on lines, etc. and they show the wear and tear just like their reader.
2 - c. To repeat an earlier post, Rachel Gibson’s books were my first contemporaries thanks to a Pedastal posting on Slake.com. Now I’m prefer contemporaries to historicals.
3 - g. I read “other” i.e., chick lit, bios, whatever books group picks
4 - b. I always have a book with me, which has helped reduce my impatience. I hate to wait for people, flights, busses or to be stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel on the bus. I’ve bought books in airports I already own because I knew I’d enjoy it and therefore be distracted (I do this when the other romance choices at the newstand are iffy).
5 - c. I can read anywhere
6 - f. except for paranormal. I’ll read an Erin MacCarthy books because her vampire books are fast, light and fun but paranormals don’t float my boat.
FreshEChelle on 04 Oct 2007 at 7:45 pm #
7. I usually read 5-7 books per month. Of these, 5 are romance.
8. I’d love to see more lead up to commitment in the romances novels I read now. An “I love you” moment or the confirmed bachelor suddenly imagining the heroine pregnant with his baby that comes too early in the relationship takes me out of the zone.
9. I wish there were less cliche language in the romance novels I read now. Susan Anderson’s current book has a character saying “Can you say privacy?” It’s as bad as “don’t go there” or the sarcastic “Hel-lo”. Also, vocabulary that is in appropriate to the time period. Oh, and traditional romance novel covers. I use a book cover because I’m embarrassed by the shirtless hero and long tressed heroine. Sorry to say that but it’s how I feel.
10. The main reason I read romance is escapism.

2. B) Historicals, I rarely read contemp romance
3. I also like to read books on history, classics, poetry, bio’s, fantasy & adventure.
4. B) I never even travel to the grocery store or work w/o a book, just in case, you never know what is going to happen.
5. C) A book & nothing else, I can block anything, I’m a mother!
6. I love romances that have a little of everything, I’ve even read some with paranormal, but I wouldn’t have to have the paranormal everytime.
7. I usually read 8 to 10 books a month, sometimes more and usually — about 8 are historical (a lot of re-reads too)
8. I love humor in my books, but with the authors I read, I get that.
9. I wish there was less cheating in romances, most of the authors I read don’t include that, like Karen H & Sabrina -thanks!

I am fascinated by the number of Goddesses who can read a book and have it look brand new when they are done. Are you ladies also organized and neat and tidy or is it just the books?

1. d) somewhere inbetween (b) new with no cracking, bending or defacing or (a) might as well throw it out because it was in my apron pocket at work and got wet and then thrown in my purse and got lost in the abyss for a few hours. Anyone think they just don’t make ‘em like they used to? My older romances don’t seem to get as beat up when I put them in my purse as the new ones do when you just take them off the shelf. Anyone!?!?!? Okay, just me then.
