Website Pages - To Be or Not To Be?

In honor of my upcoming Regency trilogy, The Courtship Wars, I decided to totally revamp my website by this fall. So after interviewing over a dozen designers and design firms, I settled on a firm that I thought: 1) would best fit me and my books in terms of the image and tone I want to convey, and 2) could create something a little fresh and unique and not just same-old, same-old.  jordan4b3.jpg

I’m delighted to say they came up with a home page for me that I adore (see image on left).

But we’re still going round and round about the design and content of the secondary pages… what the pages should look like, how they should function, and what they should contain.

Since this will be my third website, I have some very specific ideas about what I think should be on my new inside pages (okay, I’ll also admit to being a control freak :-) ). But I thought I should ask my fellow goddesses for your opinions, since I’m sure you have some good advice I can use!

Let me also add that this firm has done website designs for lots of authors, including some huge names, but they’ve never designed any sites for romance authors. And I’ve had to stress to them that romance readers are very picky in their desires and expectations… and what works for general fiction authors may not be entirely right for romance authors.

For example, they’re big believers in getting all the content for one page to fit on your computer screen so you don’t have to scroll down. But my book excerpts are just getting started with one screen page! I’m not even sure a back cover blurb would fit on one screen.

I’d love to know if you agree, and what you think is important for the websites you frequent. What content for the home page and secondary pages? What works and doesn’t work? Is uniqueness a priority, or do you not care as long as the basics are covered? Should the page content fit on the screen, or do you mind scrolling down a ways?

So please tell me, what do you like to see on a romance author’s website? If you have a website of your own, what do you like best about yours? Any other advice for me when I’m telling the designers what I want and don’t want?

I have no problem scrolling up and down. I have a big problem with having to scroll left or right.

  2. ladydawgfan on 13 Sep 2007 at 11:34 pm #

Don’t forget a printable booklist, back to start button on all pages, a listing on connected books and characters, and a way to compare original and re-released book covers (either clicking or skimming over). And I’m with twolilhahas on the scrolling bit. Scrolling side to side is the quickest way to get me to shut down the site, regardless of why I went to it to begin with. Absolutely at the TOP on my “Grrrrr” list of website No-no’s.

Count me in as hating to scroll side-to-side. You just can’t get the little wheel on the mouse to take that into account.

I like to see interesting things on biographical websites. You know, like the story about Tchaikovsky eating playbills (and other papers) between acts (and once at his civil service job). Interesting (slightly neurotic?) stuff.

I have to agree about scrolling side to side. I don’t mind scrolling up and down. Plus if they tried to get everything on one page wouldn’t the print be really small? Very annoying. I also like to see at least a blurb for every book the author has written. I get really annoyed when I go to a site but only the most recent books have blurbs. How do I figure out what the other books are about, especially if it’s a series? And speaking of a series. I like to see a list of the order the books go in if they are in a series. I have the unfortunate habit of always seeming to start a series in the middle and then I have to figure out which books come before it. It’s nice to have it right there.

I went through a website redesign early in the summer. My new website is very interactive, which I love. Visitors can leave comments on most pages. I can also update it myself, which is *wonderful*. I have a blog I update once a week (more often if I have special news to report–a booksigning, that I’m guest blogging somewhere, etc…) and I also have a section called the Fraser Correspondece that’s letters between my characters (I write a series) which I update once a week as well (it’s a fun way for me to explore the characters and their back story). I also have a photo gallery with both pictures of locations from my books and pictures from booksignigs, etc… Background info that adds to the world of the book is my favorite thing on websties–pictures, deleted scenes, historical notes, character sketches. DVD extra for a book. Good luck–it sounds exciting!

I love an author’s website that has info for other un-published writers.

I believe it’s important for an author to spend the extra money vs. having something like a geocities site with glaring colors and amateur looking visuals. I agree I do like like to scroll side to side, but scrolling down is not a problem. I think the site should be clean-looking (not cluttered) and easy to navigate with clear links to different pages, such as book list, new releases, about the author, coming soon, blog, etc.

I also love when authors have a page that lists connecting books, and if there are new releases, listing if they are re-issues. I love learning about the author, and pictures are fun. Upcoming events, like booksignings. And I think it’s important that the site be updated on a regular basis, at least monthly.

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed my visit to your web site. (http://nicolejordanauthor.com) I especially loved the “Pleasure Palace” and how it showcased your books. I also loved your colors.

I’m actually someone who enjoys all the trailers shown at the movies and enjoy that same format on a web site. I’m a sucker for mood music and also love trailers that feature your newest release. Karen Rose’s site had a great trailer for her newest.

One more thing…your picture is beautiful.

Now that my first post went into computer never-never land, I will try again. I agree with twolilhahas and ladydawgfan, especially the side-to-side scrolling and printable backlist (so I know which books to spend lots of money on).

And you must keep the step-back of John DeSalvo in Master of Temptation. *g*

I like trailers but the ones you start yourself. Although they are more impressive I find the ones that introduce the site with blaring music and a difficult button to enter the site sometimes annoying.

  10. SuzyQ on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:01 am #

Like so many of you, I do not like to scroll side to side - nothing is more annoying – but I have no issues with scrolling up and down. I think a website should be easy to navigate and be pleasing to the eye. No bright colors and flashing text, it gives me a headache. The secondary pages should all be in the same format with the links or buttons in the same place to make navigation easier to the visitor. I hate to have to search for the ‘home’ button on each page I visit.

I don’t mind Flash (that’s the coding, not the flashing text) on a site, but don’t really care for when it is an introduction to the site – I always tend to just hit ‘skip intro’ anyway.

I agree with Susan K and like to see blurbs of past books as well as the order in which they were written. I’ve been there too many times in trying to figure out the order of a series.

I also like to know what’s up and coming with, of course, an excerpt.

  11. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:03 am #

See, I knew you goddesses would have some excellent advice! Romance readers know what they want! This is great stuff.

    >>I like to see interesting things on biographical websites. You know, like the story about Tchaikovsky eating playbills (and other papers) between acts (and once at his civil service job). Interesting (slightly neurotic?) stuff.

LOL! I’ll have to see what I can come up with, Zambi. I doubt I can compete with Tchaikovsky — and I didn’t know about that!

And Tracy, I had half a post written when I went back up to look at your website, and I promptly lost it all cause I got so involved in reading your Fraser correspondence. That is sooo cool. Don’t know how you do it. I’ve done interviews in the past with my heroes, but it’s the very devil, trying to make them sound sexy but not crude or bragging. And I also love your interactive feature. I don’t think I’ve seen that done before. And great book covers and site, btw! Makes me want to go out and buy the books… which I suppose is the main point of having a website. *g*

    To be cont…

  12. SuzyQ on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:04 am #

Oh, and one more thing, I don’t like background music on a site. You tend to get looks from your co-workers and then try to scramble to shut off the sound on your computer.

  13. cail on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:12 am #

    1) no scrolling side to side, but isn’t that a given now?
    2) printable backlist in order of publishing date is a MUST. i carry what ever author’s i’m hooked on at the moment around in my bag with little check marks next to the ones i’ve already purchases. it saves me every time.
    3) no music. takes forever to load, and is often irritating. or at least have an easy option to turn it off.
    4) contests are extremely fun.
    5) link to the blog!!

  14. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:18 am #

I’m with you on the blaring music and flashing lights. And with making video/music access optional.

Donna, that’s interesting you said that about the stepbacks… I don’t think I’d gotten that far in the design process, ie whether or not to include the stepback art work. And I can see why you’d advise me to keep that photo! I’m still drooling.

Critical Ellen, your praise humbles me! I can’t take credit for the author photos — the photographer was just amazing — but I will take credit for the Pleasure Palace *G*. I’m thinking for the new website I won’t keep the PP, and I wasn’t planning on keeping any of the hero interviews, just because there’s so much stuff there to transfer to my new site, but maybe I should as links.

What I was thinking about including instead of the PP was a Character Gallery. Instead of hero interviews, maybe some blog-like comments from each of the characters. Such as how they relate to their own hero/heroine. Maybe the heroine cataloguing what she likes and dislikes about her hero?

Any ideas on that? What I could do with a character gallery? All I have so far is a button on a dropdown menu that can easily be changed. And I can call it something else, or focus entirely on something else.

Oh, and I’m calling that area of my new website the Readers’ Room, which will be a place for me to talk about new news, the Goddess Blogs, and the character stuff.

  15. elsiehogarth on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:33 am #

I just hope this comment goes through because I have been having problems posting and it has been killing me but I’ve loved all the topics.
    So here goes:

I have to say that I also visited the new webiste and I the colors are great and you look fantastic.

-Definitely….Booklist and if the books are companions to others. I agree with everything ladydawgfan said. Also the scrolling. No side to side.

-A Family Tree ( Ilove that Stephanie Laurens has it for her Cynster Family)

-Don’t forget about future booksigning dates so you “fan”atics can plan accordingly.

  16. cookeemama on 14 Sep 2007 at 8:36 am #

I agree with all the comments above and would like to add another pet peeve. I absolute HATE cute little things that follow my cursor around the page. Hearts, stars, kittens, etc. Whatever they are, they totally distracting to me.

An extemely cluttered web page is another turn off. One of my favorite authors has such a messy cluttered site that I no longer go there.

Oh yes. If an author has a web site, it should be updated on a regular basis. I’m thinking of one that doesn’t have the author’s last 2 books. Hasn’t bee updated since 2005, for crying out loud. I say, either update or close it down.

    Opinionated Margaret

What a great blog, Nicole!! I am taking notes even as we speak. I do not have a website yet, but the Godesses have such great ideas!! I like links to other authors AND research site links. I have discovered some of the most amazing research sites through the authors I read. I think a little spot where the author puts up fan mail she has received would be nice. I like to read what other people think of my favorite authors!

  18. Claudia Dain on 14 Sep 2007 at 10:14 am #

I hate to scroll! Side to side is a deal-breaker. Am I alone in not wanting to scroll down on the home page? I don’t mind on subsequent pages, particularly the excerpts, but too much scrolling wears me out. (Wimp!)

Too small fonts…ugh. My eyes start to burn.

Dark background and white text…double ugh. Way too hard on the eyes.

No music…agree with everyone on that.

I love the idea of a Character Gallery! How fun! And the family tree idea is fabulous also. You know, I just updated my website 6 months ago, but this is getting me in the mood to redo again!

  19. Julia London on 14 Sep 2007 at 10:16 am #

I cannot claim to follow my own advice, but here goes.

One thing that bugs me on a home page is too much stuff. I would rather click over and read stuff that I am interested in, but when its all there glaring at me, I tend to get glazed eyes and move on.

Having said that, I never seem to get my stuff down to the very succinct. I bug myself very much.

Pamela, that’s an interesting perspective about the fan mail. I would never think to put that up — I would feel like I was bragging or something.

  20. ladydawgfan on 14 Sep 2007 at 10:25 am #

One thing that I forgot to mention is making your website accessible to ALL browsers, including Mozilla-based Opera, which I used exclusively due to IE’s security holes, Firefox, and others. Not everyone uses IE, and not all sites recognize this, including the site of one of my favorite authors, which I can never get to load in Opera.

  21. SuzyQ on 14 Sep 2007 at 10:43 am #

ladydawgfan - good point about Opera. That’s what the Wii system uses to browse the internet on the TV. Yes, I know, my geekness is showing.

  22. cail on 14 Sep 2007 at 11:38 am #

SuzyQ, I want a Wii so badly!

I completely agree about dark backgrounds and white font. big no no.

    i LOVE character trees!!

  23. Tracy Grant on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:14 pm #

So glad you liked the site and the Fraser Correspondence, Nicole! I have a lot of fun with it. When I launched the site, a writer friend said “Good idea, but I bet you’re going to wish you’d said you’d post a new character letter every month instead of every week”, but I actually find I like doing them and they don’t take that long. And sometimes they give me new ideas for the series. I *love* your character gallery idea. Each character commenting on the heroh/heroine (including the hero/heroine commetning on each other) would be really fun. You could even have little details next to their name, such as “Favorite person, Greatest Fear, Chief Goal in Life, etc… I agree about liking home pages to be clean and not cluttered (I like lots of detail on websites, but I think it’s better on secondary pages). And some people (like me) live in rural areas with no high-speed internet available, so it’s nice if things that take a long time to load (video trailers) are optional.

  24. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:43 pm #

YES, CookeeM!!! I hate images that follow me around. Or menus that drop down the page when I do. I feel like I’m being stalked, lol.

Marie and Pam, I can see how research links and articles on writing would be really helpful. I used to have a link to a fab website for this, but the author took it down because of spam. But I could find all kinds of great info there.

As for fan mail, I can also see how that might be interesting to read. Does a guestbook count? A lot of my readers post on my guestbook, something short and sweet that doesn’t need a reply. And if they want to ask me a specific question, they’ll e-mail me instead. I admit I love hearing from readers!

And character family trees could be very cool. I’m not sure I would be clever enough to figure out a whole tree since I usually kill off my hero and heroine’s parents before they get their story. But I could do a connecting chart for the new series…. Hmmm. That’s an intriguing idea. The trilogy is about 3 sisters and 3 noblemen, but some of their friends are going to get their own books in the future….

  25. colinfirthfan on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:49 pm #

I ma sure this has been mentioned but excerpts are a must. If I can’t read an excerpt of the book then I am less likely to buy it. The more excerpts the better.
    ;-)

Add me to the list of people who are against scrolling from side to side.

I like the character gallery. JR Ward has an interview with the brothers on her website. I have read them a million times.

  26. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:51 pm #

And I soooo agree about small fonts and white on black text, Claudia. And about the home page not being cluttered, Julia. That’s so hard to do cause there’s so much stuff you want readers to see!

ladydawgfan - good point about Opera. That’s what the Wii system uses to browse the internet on the TV. Yes, I know, my geekness is showing.

LOL. My ignorance is showing cause I’ve not heard about these. Want to explain, SQ or LDF? Fortunately this design firm seems to understand the need for a universally accessable site, and that readers use different monitors and resolutions. But I could ask them about Opera.

  27. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:54 pm #

    >>JR Ward has an interview with the brothers on her website. I have read them a million times.

Actually, JR got that idea from me — the hero interviews on my Pleasure Palace *G.* And I got to read her very first Brotherhood manuscript to give a quote.

Colinff, for excerts, do you like first chapters? Or scenes in middle? Do you like more than one excert per book? I’m asking cause I need to decide what excerpts to transfer to the new site from my current one. And I have 3 excerpts up for each of my Ballintine books.

  28. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 12:56 pm #

    >>> You could even have little details next to their name, such as “Favorite person, Greatest Fear, Chief Goal in Life, etc

Whoohoo, Tracy, that is a fab idea! And it would be fairly easy for me to do, since I love making lists.

Thank you! I’m going to put that on my content list. That might also serve to let readers know about background info and the writing process as you suggested.

And Stacy, one great thing about this firm is their Photo Gallery option. I’ll be able to put up thumbnails of photos that will enlarge when clicked. So I can have tons more photos than I currently have. Already have my dh working on it… finding pics of mountain life that he’s taken over the past seven years. He has some spectacular ones of flora and mountains and sunsets.

  29. colinfirthfan on 14 Sep 2007 at 1:06 pm #

Nicole you are so lucky to read JR’s manuscript. :)
I was hesitating about buying her books but after reading the interviews a few times I couldn’t resist.

What I like the most is when authors post an excerpt and then most a second (or third) excerpt a little closer to the release date. Really heightens your anticipation.

About posting an excerpt in the middle of the book - if it gives us a clear idea of where the book is going or the 2 main characters relationship then I am ok with it.
If the excerpt throws you into a confusing part in the middle of the book then it just bugs me!

3 excepts Nicole? I am going there right now.
I confess I haven’t managed to read all the authors on this blog as yet - but I will be getting there soon. ;-)
(I just need to grow another head Zaphod Beeblebrux so I can read faster)

  30. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 1:11 pm #

    >>About posting an excerpt in the middle of the book - if it gives us a clear idea of where the book is going or the 2 main characters relationship then I am ok with it. If the excerpt throws you into a confusing part in the middle of the book then it just bugs me!

That makes great sense, CFF! And I love the idea about posting a second excerpt close to the release date. I try to do that in my newletters.

As for the 3 excerpts, I’ve usually posted a scene somewhere close to the beginning of the book to show the characters and their main issues with each other. And then 2 more that are love scenes… on my Pleasure Palace. But since the new trilogy isn’t going to be as spicey as my previous books, I thought it would be better to show more fun character stuff than love scenes.

  31. Sabrina Jeffries on 14 Sep 2007 at 1:49 pm #

Tell your designers they’re wrong about the excerpts. You can’t get an excerpt in one screen shot that will tell anybody anything.

I won’t repeat what others said, but I do tend to dislike flash unless it’s very creative.

Why don’t you send them to some of the better romance websites so they’ll see what most authors are doing? Then maybe they’ll understand better.

  32. SuzyQ on 14 Sep 2007 at 1:57 pm #

Nicole - Wii is a Nintendo gaming system (btw, tons of fun) which has the capabilty of surfing the web on your TV. Opera is the internet browser the system uses, although Opera can be used on your computer too. I know, surfing the web on your TV? But think about it - what a great way to show your friends and family pictures that you have uploaded to a photo site while gathered around the large screen TV.

  33. twolilhahas on 14 Sep 2007 at 2:03 pm #

Oh cail, the Wiis are great. I got one as a birthday present from my boyfriend (who just so happens to own his own website design company! lol http://www.eyespike.com if anyone is interested! lol). Julia, they are the new Nintendo system out. Very cool! They use bluetooth technology to have wireless remotes that allow you to interact with the games. I love it.

I hear about website customers all the time, of course. Web designers have to think about things that the average internet viewer doesn’t see…like making it fit into all different types of browsers and things. It’s a lot of work to make a website. lol Glad it’s his job and not mine.

I agree with everyone that hates music on a page. I keep my volume muted all the time for that very reason. If I want to listen to a song, I’ll click play. I like a romance website to have all the books that author has written with excerpts. I really liked Karen Marie Moning’s page having pictures of places in Scotland…cont

  34. twolilhahas on 14 Sep 2007 at 2:08 pm #

…she visited that helped inspire some of her stories. I think they mostly inspired the new series that I haven’t been reading, but I still enjoyed the pictures and the little captions. I love history behind the writing of the story. J.R. Ward told how the Black Dagger Brotherhood king, Wrath, was a shadow walking through her mind a couple of days before she got the actual idea. It was great! I love that sort of thing. It makes it personal for me.

And definitely less is more where page design comes in. My absolute favorite romance author has a horrible web page! There’s a huge list of so many different things, the pages are left-aligned (which drives me crazy…I want them in the middle…) and it’s very generic, cheap looking. I’m dedicated enough to her work to visit her page regularly and sift through it, but I always want to email her and say…what if I could get my boyfriend to help a girl out? lol Of course, I would never do that, but the thought is always there.

  35. ladydawgfan on 14 Sep 2007 at 2:24 pm #

Truth be told, I’m grateful that you, and the other goddesses have websites to begin with!! I have several favorite authors who don’t have sites at all!!! Can you imagine?? In this day and age, with everything looked up on the internet, NOT to be able to go to the web page of your favorite author and look up info on her books??? Irritating in the extreme!!!

  36. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 2:28 pm #

Ah, thanks, SQ! I’ve never played Nintendo except once when my nephew was little… but, yes, view photos on a bigscreen TV is way cool.

Sabrina, I was exaggerating a bit about them wanting excerpts to appear on one page… they didn’t exactly say that, just that they thought it best for all the other pages. And I’m trying to figure out the best way to access the excerpts. Right now the link goes to a different screen entirely, and in the case of some, to an entirely different section of my site. But I’ve seen some sites, including my friend Kathryn Smith’s gorgeous new site, that have the experts appear in new windows, so you never actually leave the page. Very cool stuff.

Two, I wish I had known about your boyfriend two months ago! I definitely would have checked him out. And it must be great to have the inside scoop on Internet workings!

  37. Julia London on 14 Sep 2007 at 4:20 pm #

Nicole, I can’t see the screen shot of your website very well, but it looks fabulous! And you look gorgeous!

    I hate you!

  38. Ronlyn on 14 Sep 2007 at 4:31 pm #

    yep….what they said. *G*
I’m wracking my brain for something creative to add, but I can’t think of anything else. LOL

  39. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 4:37 pm #

LOL, Julia! That photo isn’t my fault, it’s the photographer’s. She did makeup and hair and hired a wardrobe artist to bring in some gorgeous clothes for me. Wouldn’t let me wear anything I’d brought to the shoot, including shoes.

And then when we were almost done and had five different shots/poses, she said, “ok, you look too beautiful in all those shots, now we need to make you look realistic.” So I ended up with another casual shot that is much more like the real me. But she also did an incredible shot of me lounging on a Victoria day bed, dressed in a ruffly white gown and pearls. It really is special, even if it’s not me!

And I was going to make the home page image larger, or at least link it so you could click and enlarge it here, but this page may still change a little cause we’re still working on the buttons and dropdown menus, and I didn’t want old pics floating around the Internet. But really, I’m so very pleased with that home page design. Now if we can just figure out a good design for the secondary pages, we can start inputting content.

  40. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 4:39 pm #

Ronlyn, that’s actually encouraging if you agree with all the other goddesses’ advice. I’ve been madly scribbling notes all day — and I REALLY appreciate all the comments and suggestions.

Some of them just validated my own beliefs, but others made me reconsider some plans I’d made for the new site, and still others gave me some excellent ideas!

  41. Ronlyn on 14 Sep 2007 at 5:09 pm #

Oh! What about (forgive me if it’s already been mentioned, I’m a bit sleep deprived today) having scenes that didn’t make it into the final book for whatever reason. I remember reading one (I think again on JR Ward’s site) and it was a fun little extra.
And I remember Celeste Bradley’s site had pictures (drawings) of the characters, which was fun to see.

  42. Nicole Jordan on 14 Sep 2007 at 5:44 pm #

Pics of charater models! That’s a really good idea, Ronlyn. I’ll have to figure out if I can make it work for my Character Gallery.

As for scenes, I think JR had to cut out some in her early books becasue the manuscripts were so long. My publisher doesn’t worry as much about length. And if I cut out scenes, it’s because they are really bad, lol. I don’t think I would want anyone to see those drafts.

On the other hand, my editor is always asking me to cut down on my epilogues, cause I tend to put a lot of stuff in those. She wants epilogues to be short and sweet, with the hero and heroine basking in their happiness, not a lot of details about other characters. So maybe I could post those long versions of epilogues. Do you think readers would be interested in seeing those?

  43. Amanda on 14 Sep 2007 at 5:54 pm #

Hate to scroll horizontally, scrolling vertically is fine.

What a web page really needs is clarity. The links to different pages should be very clear. Its frustrating when you don’t know where to go for what you need!

Wouldn’t that have been nice, Nicole? lol Then you could have gotten him to read one of your romance novels for research purposes and he would finally understand why sometimes reading is more stimulating than conversation! Ha!

    Amanda, I agree totally!

And Two, if you want us to work on your bf so he’ll better understand your passion, just say the word, lol.

Great topic! I’m going through a website design now too. And until it’s done, I have a basic “here I am” placeholder that is driving me crazy. I need to get the new one done and running, and it’s good to know what people don’t want to see. I hate those things that follow the mouse around too, like glitter stars and hearts. So annoying. Or sites that make you sit through a long flash entry scene.

I’m easy to please when it comes to websites. As long as there is no left to right scrolling, them I’m happy.
Oh wait, I hate hate hate music on a website. Unless there is a very clear OFF button for me to click on, then I will leave the site ASAP.

As a fan/reader I think that Sabrina Jeffries has the best website ever.

Aww, thanks, Chantal! I’m glad you like it. I’ll tell the web elves you said so. ;-)

    >>>that is driving me crazy

Sherri, I think this is my biggest problem with having a site redesigned. I’m such a control freak, I want it all done MY way — and done YESTERDAY, lol.

And agree, Chantal — Sabrina’s site is great, esp since she has so much interesting info.

And your name is very beautiful, too, Chantal. I always wanted to be named that!
