A Few of My Fave Things
Jun 26th 2007
Nicole JordanGoddess Readers Speak Out
You know the song in THE SOUND OF MUSIC that goes, “These are a few of my favorite things?”
“Whiskers on kittens… brown paper packages tied up with string.”
I don’t agree with some of Julie Andrews’s choices. While kittens are adorable, their whiskers are not that appealing to me. Whiskers are not attractive on a show horse either, since it’s a sign of poor grooming. And on men… well, a five-o’clock shadow can be sexy on some guys, but if you have to kiss them, whiskers just feel like sandpaper.
I’m not fond of brown paper either, but I guess I should remember that song was written about a time before glitzy wrapping paper came into vogue. And back then brown paper packages meant presents. I’m okay with presents. I like them usually. But I can list a lot of things that beat out presents for my favorite things.
So fellow goddesses, since quizzes are a great get-to-know-you vehicle, and since I like to learn about the goddesses I hang with, this is another chance to talk about some of our fave things.
What are some of your favorite things and why? Name your favorite:
-LOVE SONG
-ROMANTIC MOVIE
-ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV
-PLACE TO READ
-READING MATERIAL (newspapers, magazines, novels, non-fiction, how-to manuals, on-line sources, etc.)
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE (literary, historicals, mysteries, paranormal, etc.)
-Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than
a) TV and movies
b) chocolate
c) sex
d) as necessary as breathing

I’ll start!
-LOVE SONG is Edwin McCain’s I Could Not Ask for More bc the lyrics are just so romantic. “Lying here with you, listening to the rain… These are the moments I’ll remember all my life… I could not ask for more.” It’s great music, too. I just melt every time I hear that song.
-ROMANTIC MOVIE is A&E version of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, gorgeous costumes and swashbuckling, great romance
-MOVIE STAR is Sandra Bullock, bc she’s beautiful and smart in a girl-next-door kind of way
-PLACE TO READ is my greatroom couch, bc it’s so comfortable when I sprawl out
-READING MATERIAL: daily newspaper and Sunday New York Times, Newsweek, TV Guide, novels, bc I like to keep up with current events but need to escape them in fiction
-FICTION GENRES are thrillers (Child, JKellerman, Connally, Coben) and romances. Fave subgenre: hotter series contemporaries (Harlequin Blaze). Because they all provide great escape from my own work and everyday life.
-READING IS as necessary as breathing for me. I couldn’t imagine my life without it!

LOVE SONG: Brian Adams, Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman
ROMANTIC MOVIE: Right now, Catch and Release. I just watched it tonight.
PLACE TO READ: The bathtub. It’s quiet and the kids don’t bother me!
READING MATERIAL: Romance novels.
GENRE: Romance is all I’ll read. I hate being unhappily surprised and so I take no chances.
If by READING you mean literacy, then it’s as important as breathing. If by READING you mean reading for entertainment, then it’s better than TV and MOVIES. As far as reading vs. chocolate goes, this is an unfair question because I can read AND eat chocolate and never have to choose between them! haha I found a way around that one! lol And I hate to say, I’d probably toss a book rather quickly if given the opportunity to have a little sex!

Romantic song: So many, but I’ll go with “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner
Romantic movie/tv star: Meg Ryan cuz she’s so likeable in those movies, but I also agree with Sandra Bullock
Favorite place to read: all comfy propped up in bed lounging against the pillows
Genre: definitely romance, currently the subgenre of erotic romance
Reading is definitely necessary. I have to do it to live LOL.

-LOVE SONG- I’m torn here, but I think I’m going to have to go with a showtune even though I didn’t want to: If I Can’t Love Her- Beauty and the Beast
-ROMANTIC MOVIE or TV STAR: having trouble with this one… I too love a good Meg Ryan flick, but I think I might have to go with Drew Barrymore… The Wedding Singer and a few of her others are great repeat movies.
-PLACE TO READ: my bed, the train, a plane, a tree
-READING MATERIAL (newspapers, magazines, novels, non-fiction, how-to manuals, on-line sources, etc.): novels/online
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE: Historicals!
-Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than a) TV and movies. - definitely not C and as twolilhahas mentioned… i can eat chocolate AND read at the same time. Technically I think I should chose reading over chocolate for my wardrobe’s sake.

LOVE SONG - To Make you Feel My Love - Garth Brooks (It was in the movie Hope Floats)
ROMANTIC MOVIE or TV STAR - I am also going to go with Drew Barrymore in movies such as Ever After, Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and Music and Lyrics, but I also love Sandra Bullock in Hope Floats, While You Where Sleeping and the Lake House.
PLACE TO READ - Really almost anywhere especially at home in my bed or when traveling and I don’t have to drive.
READING MATERIAL - novels, magazines and on-line sources
FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE - Romance/Historicals, and Young Adult/Fantasy
Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than
d) as necessary as breathing - it is what gets me through the week!

LOVE SONG - My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. I love this song. It touched my heart the first time I heard and still does.
ROMANTIC MOVIE/TV STAR - Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon. I could watch both of these ladies all the time.
PLACE TO READ - Wherever I can. I always have a book in purse just in case.
READING MATERIAL - Novels & magazines
FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE - Regency Romance & Paranormal Romance. Regencies are my all time favorite but I also like the paranormal. Especially Christine Feehan’s Dark series. And I also just finished The Stand by Stephen King. That is one long book! Took me 3 weeks!
Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than
d) as necessary as breathing - I feel lost if I’m not reading anything.
Nicole Jordan on 27 Jun 2007 at 8:38 am #
LadyDF, “Breathe” is also one of my very fave love songs! And the lyrics to “I Want to Know What Love Is” are just so romantic.
Love Drew Barrymore, too!
Oh, I and I just realized the second question was really unclear so I changed it to two questions to include movie AND movie star.
I’d have to say my fave romantic movie is the A&E version of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymore.
As for the sex vs chocolate thing…. TWO, you made me laugh! Very smart answer!

Oh sure! Change the questions as I’m posting - LOL!
OK, romantic movie star - I’d have to go with Drew Barrymore. As stated above by others, I love her movies and Ever After is one of my favs as well as The Wedding Singer.
Susan K on 27 Jun 2007 at 8:50 am #
I have a couple of favorite romantic movies “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Never Been Kissed” & “The Wedding Singer”.
Suzy Q - My mom is a huge Stephen King fan too. I just finished The Stand for the first time. I love the miniseries. I’m mad that they discontinued printing it on DVD. And I just got outbid on Ebay for one. I may just order one off Amazon.
Nicole Jordan on 27 Jun 2007 at 8:55 am #
>>>>Oh sure! Change the questions as I’m posting - LOL!
I didn’t mean to be evil, SuzyQ. lol. I just didn’t realize when I was posting late last night that my first version could be read two ways. I said favorite ROMANTIC MOVIE or TV STAR, but the way I capitilized it made it look like I was asking for movies. So to fair, I added that.
I loved EVER AFTER also. Really fresh twist and acting. And I just saw MUSIC AND LYRICS on cable bc you guys recommended it. Really fun.
Also loved the song “Unforgettable”. In fact my folks still have the vinal record of the orginal Nat King Cole version. Very cool that you got married to it, Suzy. I got married to the music only version of “A Time For Us”, which was the theme song to one of the Romeo & Juliet movies.

This is hard!
Love Song: Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots (but lots of contenders!)
Romantic Movie: Moonstruck (obviously)
Romantic Star: Kate Winslet (because ‘Holiday’ was so fab!), but Drew Barrymore is giving her a run
Place to Read: Bed, because I’m usually undisturbed and sleep will follow
Reading Material: Novels and entertainment mags (otherwise I would know nothing about television!)
Genre/subgenre: Regency romance and contemporary thrillers (Harlen Coben rules!)
To me, reading is as necessary as breathing. If I have nothing in hand to read, I feel completely lost.
Julia London on 27 Jun 2007 at 9:15 am #
song: Melt by Phil Roy
Romantic Movie: Pride and Prejudice (I think I repeat myself)
Romantic Star: Colin Firth. Johnny Depp (Karen Rose, I think we need an intervention)
Place to Read: Bed or the gym. Makes me go longer on the elliptical
Reading materials: This really changes. I like all sorts of stuff. Right now I’m into western literature. Not westerns, but stuff set in the historical west. I also like slutty sleazy magazines.
READING TO ME IS AN NECESSARY AS BREATHING. Ranks up there with writing.
SuzyQ on 27 Jun 2007 at 9:42 am #
Susan K - I think I still have The Stand on VHS somewhere. King writes so much and many people don’t realize that The Shawshank Redemption was based on one of his short stories. He also wrote The Green Mile, which I really enjoyed.
Nicole - I would imagine that the vinyl is a collectors item at this point. That’s very cool they still have the original.
Claudia Dain on 27 Jun 2007 at 9:45 am #
LOVE SONG: This one is so hard, but I’m going to have to go with ‘Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman’ by Brian Adams. I get chills every time I hear it.
ROMANTIC MOVIE: Oh, too many to choose from! ‘That Touch of Mink’ is a real favorite, but so is ‘The Quiet Man’. P&P is in a class by itself.
ROMANTIC STAR: I can’t choose! I just can’t! Hugh Jackman? I wouldn’t throw him out of bed.
PLACE TO READ: The big, cushy couch in my sunroom. Great light and lots of pillows!
READING MATERIAL: I have to admit to having it bad for historical non-fiction.
READING IS AS…necessary as breathing. I can’t imagine a day without reading.
Susan K on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:06 am #
SuzyQ - I love The Green Mile. Both the book and the movie. I haven’t read Shawshank Redemption or seen the movie all the way through. I really like the tv show The Dead Zone, although I know it’s not exactly like the book but it’s still good. The Stand is my all time favorite though.
Nicole Jordan on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:11 am #
>>>Caren Crane Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots
>>>Julia London song: Melt by Phil Roy
Ok, CC and Julia, these are totally unknown to me. What kind of songs are these, and where would I look for them to check them out? If these are your fave love songs, I gotta hear them!
>>>>Kasey: READING MATERIAL - novels, magazines and on-line sources
Kasey, where do you go for your on-line sources? I’d like to know cause all I know about are AOL and Yahoo.
And Stephen King is a bit too scary for me! The closest I get to horror is Dean Koontz, and I while I LOVED his early stuff, I haven’t read him in a while cause of the fright factor.

Bethany Hamilton on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:25 am #
-LOVE SONG - Valentine by Martina McBride or Come What May from Moulin Rouge (the first was the first song hubby and I danced to, and Come What May was our wedding song)

-ROMANTIC MOVIE - OH….this is a tough one…..Kate and Leopold is the one coming to be at the moment. It’s the closest thing to a romance novel come to life I’ve ever seen. Complete with time travel! Though the man isn’t nearly as Alpha as I usually like
-ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV - Meg Ryan - What was she in that WASN’T good??
-PLACE TO READ - curled up in bed with the kitties
-READING MATERIAL (newspapers, magazines, novels, non-fiction, how-to manuals, on-line sources, etc.) - Novels…unless I’m short on time, then it’s comics or the news.
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE Historicals - I like to be swept away to another time and place, I get enough of the here and now in real life.
Bethany Hamilton on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:26 am #
-Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than TV and movies because novels are capable of so much more. You can get transported in a novel the way you can’t in a movie or tv show. Things can be done in novels without the restrictions of time, money, or ratings. Novels are better than tv and movies by FAR!
Julia London on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:28 am #
I don’t think Phil Roy has ever made it very big, but he was in Austin and I heard that song and now I have it on my ipod. Check it out at Itunes.
And Stone Temple Pilots — I love them, but have to go remind myself of the song.
Bethany — I have a friend who loathes Meg Ryan. I always thought she was so cute!
Sabrina Jeffries on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:37 am #
What, Claudia? You had an easy out there with “reading is better than chocolate.”
LOVE SONG: Dougie Maclean’s “High Flying Seagull,” Bad Haggis’s “Water Church,” and Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose” are only a few of many
ROMANTIC MOVIE: the Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow in it, While You Were Sleeping, and P&P, among others
ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV: Jeremy Northam, among others
PLACE TO READ: A comfy chair is my favorite, but I usually end up reading somewhere else (the car, the bathroom, the treadmill)
READING MATERIAL: novels, online stuff, non-fiction
FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE: Historical romance, romantic suspense, erotica, although I do read other genres, too
Complete the following sentence: Since I like the first three choices, too, and might on any day choose them over a book, depending on my mood, I guess I’d have to choose: To me READING IS as necessary as breathing. Because that’s true.
Keri Ford on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:44 am #
-LOVE SONG: I Want You To Need Me by Celine Dion (my wedding song)
-ROMANTIC MOVIE: Pratical Magic with Sandra Bullock and Jullianne Moore (that spelling is questionable)
-ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV: Movies: Matt Damon. Whew. Anybody got a cold rag I could use?? In TV, the character Alex (or is it Alec?) from Grey’s Anatomy. He can be such a horse’s behind, but also a stand up guy sometimes. Course, it helps that he’s easy on the eyes!
-PLACE TO READ: in the sun.
-READING MATERIAL: Romance novels
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE: historical, suspense
-Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS better than TV and Movies. You get so much closer to the characters through a book than a movie
Marva on 27 Jun 2007 at 10:52 am #
Romantic song: Keeper of the Stars by Tracy Byrd ’cause DH and I feel it was no accident we met.
Romantic Movie: Disney’s Fantasia
Star to sigh over: Pierce Brosnan - tall, dark, hunky and Irish just like the DH
Place to read: Anywhere reasonably quiet and uninterrupted.
Reading material: whatever I can find
Favorite genre: Romance, of course, with all of the varied sub-genres.

Nicole - there are only a few of Stephen King’s books I will read or movies I will watch. The Green Mile isn’t scary and The Stand isn’t too bad either. But I will not touch IT. My mom was watching that movie once and the little bit I saw was scary and creepy enough to put me off. The Dead Zone is a tv show based on one of his books and it’s not scary at all. It’s about a guy who wakes up from a coma with psychic visions. Plus Anthony Michael Hall plays the main character and he’s HOT!!!!
Claudia Dain on 27 Jun 2007 at 12:17 pm #
Sabrina, it would have been a waste for me to say “reading is better than chocolate” since almost anything is better than chocolate! LOL
Bethany Hamilton on 27 Jun 2007 at 12:19 pm #
Julia - I love Meg Ryan
Even Anastasia where she was nothing more than a voice. I’m such a dork, lol.
Sabrina - I loved Emma too. Pretty much any movie based on Jane Austen is good for me. LOVED the remake of P&P with Keira Knightly.

LOVE SONG - Arms Wide Open by Crred (makes me think J.R. Wards’ Zsadist and Bella everytime) and Reminiscing by Little river Band
ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV - Colin Firth

PLACE TO READ - bed
READING MATERIAL - fiction nearly exclusively.
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE - romance, sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries

So many possibilities–on a different day, I might make different choices:
LOVE SONG: The final trio from Richard Strauss’s opera “Der Rosenkavalier” (which I’m going to see tonight, very excited!). Possibly the most heart-stoppingly emotional music I’ve ever heard.
-ROMANTIC MOVIE: Shakespeare in Love
-ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES OR TV: David Duchovny
-PLACE TO READ: Anywhere
-READING MATERIAL: Long novels you can escape into, but also research books, newspapers, fashion magazines, blogs and websites…
-FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE: All over the map, but my favorite is anything set in eighteenth/nineteenth century Britain, whether it’s historical fiction, mystery, romance. Mystery and romance combined in an historical setting are my absolute favorite (which is probably why that’s what I write :-).
-Complete the following sentence: To me READING IS as necessary as breathing
Kasey on 27 Jun 2007 at 1:31 pm #
Nicole - I read a lot of stuff online. I read the news on yahoo.com or since I living in MN I read the Star Tribune online. I do research through my college library online for my thesis. Since I am a huge fan of Harry Potter I check out mugglenet.com about once a week. For any movie questions I have, I can usually figure them out by going to imdb.com and wikipedia.org is a great site for looking up almost anything. I have even done the crossword puzzle on the USA Today website. I am getting laid off from work in a motnh so my work load has been slowed down considerably so I have a lot of time to surf for websites and read information that is out there.

Oh, man, everybody had such great faves! Music I need to hear again, movies I need to re-watch. This blog is very distracting! (Yes, I know, you probably think that’s a *good* thing.)
Nicole, Stone Temple Pilots were a 90s grunge band. Now, many would not classify “Interstate Love Song” as a love song at all, mainly because it’s actually an “I’ve been jilted” song. But I love those! I also adore The Barenaked Ladies’ “Break Your Heart”. I consider them love songs because they *are* about love–just the backside of it. *g* What can I say, I don’t care for sap!

This is really fun. I pretty much love all things romantic, but I will try to be specific and narrow down my answers.
LOVE SONG: Melt by Rascal Flatts (pretty much anything by Rascal Flatts is right up there too.)
ROMANTIC MOVIE: Someone Like You (with Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd) and Just Like Heaven (with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo)
ROMANTIC STAR IN MOVIES: Hugh Jackman of course, Johnny Depp and Reese Witherspoon
PLACE TO READ: Anywhere I can
READING MATERIAL: Anything I can get my hands or eyes on.
FICTION GENRE/SUBGENRE: Historical romance, romantic suspense, mysteries (specifically the Stephanie Plum series), pretty much anything romantic or with words.
READING IS: as necessary as breathing. I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t able to read.
Sabrina Jeffries on 27 Jun 2007 at 4:01 pm #
Caren, what you said about love songs cracked me up, because when I went looking I discovered that most of my favorite love songs are tragic. Go figure. It’s such an opposite thing from my reading and movie preferences that I’m scratching my head. Loreena McKennitt’s “The Highwaymen” and Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Polly Von” are two good examples.
colinfirthfan on 27 Jun 2007 at 4:11 pm #

Anyway, as I was saying…. I love the song LOVE HURTS. And I laughed about the anti-love song comment too.
I’m going to have to check out some of those songs I don’t know. And go back and rewatch all those wonderful movies. They bring back some good memories.
And Kasey and Cail, thanks for the info about on-line sources! I’ll have to check those links out.

Before I start can I say that it’s my birthday!! And so far, it’s been a great day
Ok the fav. game:
- Love Song-Man I have so many, but the top one, I’d have to go with “You and Me” by Lifehouse, it’s just a sweet song.

Ooooh, Judy, I have to agree with you on the Hugh Grant thing. I have never liked him, but I’ve seen two movies over the last couple of days with him in it and I’ve just fallen for him. lol He’s good in Music & Lyrics.
My all time favorite actor is Orlando Bloom, but that’s purely lust talking.

You and I - Crystal Gayle / Eddie Rabbit
Love Story (Where Do I Begin) - Andy Williams
I Only Have Eyes For You - Art Garfunkle
At Last - Etta James
Because of You - Tony Bennett / k.d. Lang
Who Needs to Dream - Barry Manilow
Suddenly - Billy Ocean
With You I’m Born Again - Billy Preston / Syreeta
What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life - Dusty Springfield
Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me - Gladys Knight and the Pips
One in a Million You - Larry Graham
Making Memories of Us - Keith Urban

Hey all! Nicole, sorry I was out of town and missed this blog. I looove quizzes!
Lessee …
LOVE SONG - Ok, I have too many to list. But probably Seal’s Kiss of a Rose
ROMANTIC MOVIE - Pride and Prejudice
ROMANTIC STAR - HUGH JACKMAN
PLACE TO READ - under the blanket on my couch, clutching a cuppa hot tea
READING MATERIAL - a good novel. One of my long time faves is Christina Dodd’s A WELL FAVORED GENTLEMAN
GENRE - Fiction, romance and mystery and occasionally, a little fantasy
TO ME, READING IS AS NECESSARY AS BREATHING. Can’t imagine not.

LOL, Aimee. That’s called having your cake and eating it too, I believe.

My sentiments exactly, Karen!
And LadyD, that’s a great list of songs! Brings back a lot of good memories. Although I think one of my fave BarryM songs is “Looks Like We Made It”. And it’s another anti-love song. He’s talking about how he and his former lover moved on to other loves, but then he sees her again after a long while, and the memories come rushing back.
But I know I can’t compete with KarenR for BarryM songs *G*

Yep, Body Heat counts, SG, lol. That was a very cool suspense and so hot.
And I didn’t realize it until you wrote it that way, but for the statement about Reading Is, all of the above can be true!
