When Wearing Wears on Me
Jun 13th 2007
Suzanne EnochWhen Goddesses Fall To Earth
This morning I realized that the national Romance Writers conference (RWA) is about a month away. While my height hasn’t changed, I seem to be a bit…rounder than I was at this same time last year. And that means – yes, you’ve guessed it – clothes shopping.
Now, I still remember how I looked when I was thin, and for some reason whenever I go clothes shopping I start out hunting for the same styles I used to be able to wear. A BIG mistake. So then I go for option two: the tea-length dresses with long shirts, jackets, or diaphanous drapey things disguising my waist. That usually goes pretty well, except that after two or three dresses of that style it a) takes up WAY too much room in a suitcase, and b) makes me look like a refugee from one of the TV shows where the lead actress is pregnant and they don’t want anybody to know.
The worst part is that the stupid manikins look better in the clothes than I do. Why do they put a size one dummy into a dress made for a…more substantial gal?
Sure, we’ll be fooled for a minute and go try them on, but there’s no way anybody outside the dressing room EVER gets to see me wearing svelte-girl clothes. I mean look at this photo. It’s from a site offering clothes between sizes 14-32. What size do you think she is?
Given that my daily work clothes consist of T-Shirts that say things like “Sold Out to the Dark Side” or “The Person Wearing this T-Shirt Is an Author”, plus a pair of shorts, getting decked out is a big deal. And I see those clothes on the hangar and think “I’m gonna look good”, but alas, I never seem to live up to my own expectations.
Does your preferred style of clothing look good on you? Or do you have to compromise due to limitations of space and gravity? Has anybody found a line of clothes that actually look good on more substantial persons of the feminine persuasion?

I have seen some women my size or larger that can look great in clothes, it just never happens for me. Unfortunately I remember what I looked like too and I can go into a major depression shopping for clothes. My BF just keeps saying what’s wrong with it? Ugh!!!! Everything I say.
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 6:19 am #
Suzanne, I feel your frustration. I too have grown rounder over the years though not in all places. From the waist down I’m a size 8 or 10 while above the waist I’m a gravity-challenged 12 or 14. Add to that the fact that I’m a shortie and it can make clothes shopping a real adventure. When I was young, firm and a size 7, I could do just about any style proud. Of course, in my mind I’m still that size and naturally gravitate to those styles. Good thing they have mirrors in those places! lol
Two years ago I was planning a trip to Italy and looking for clothes that don’t take up much space in a suitcase. I visited Chicos to check out their travelers collection. Much to my surprise I found that many of their beautiful clothes were very flattering to my figure. I’ve purchased several pieces since then and always get a lot of compliments when I wear them. Their clothes are pricey but very well made and long lasting and they have terrific sales/coupons.

Oh, Suzy, you’ve hit my sore nail on the head. I HATE clothes shopping. It makes me annoyed, because I know I’m going to be frustrated. I, too, must shop for RWA. I’m about the same size as last year, having gone through identical rotations of diet and exercise between a book, only to have the pounds magically reappear during next deadline.
My problem is, I only buy enough clothes for a few days because I say to my poor gullible, optimistic self, “You’ll be less round next year, so why spend lots of money on clothes you’ll never wear?” So I buy only a few things and by this time of year, they’re all worn out. So I torture myself by having to go through the whole shopping thing again.
I’ve tried Chicos - they don’t have much for short women, which is another pet peeve of mine. Who says short women who want to look sophisticated stop at a freakin’ size 14? I mean, who made that store policy? I want to know. Eyes narrowing…. I really want to know.

I LOVE clothing shopping. It is right behind reading and book shopping for favorite hobbies. I do suffer from the same problem. I am no size zero and many things I want to look good on me do not. (That whole twenties flapper sort of dress cut that was “in” last year looks MUCH cuter on a hanger than on me, so that is where I left it) The benefit of enjoying shopping is that I can keep trying on things until I find something I do like on me. Of course, I still occassionaly buy something that I only wish looked good on me or that I hope after a month of dieting I will shrink three sizes to look good in. So far no luck turing into the incredible shrinking woman. Rats!

Suzanne and Karen, we need to start our own clothing company. Period.
A year ago, this really lovely boutique type store for large women opened in our area (in a horrible location, but I digress). I loved it, except:
a) The owner, who was large, bought clothes that looked good on HER. Since she and I were shaped differently, they didn’t always look good on ME.
b) She had a rather limited inventory of her fabulous clothes.
Apparently, these objections and the location were enough to tank her business, because despite the fact that I spent a ton of money there (and bought some gorgeous outfits), she folded. And I mourned the loss for weeks. Am STILL mourning the loss.
Karen Rose on 13 Jun 2007 at 9:28 am #
I mourn with you, Sabrina. But I have to tell you, if you’re ever in Sacremento, go to the Dillard’s downtown. They have the largest (no pun) selection of evening gowns in the hard-to-find sizes that I’ve ever seen! I got my new dress for the RITA gala there and it’s my favorite color and actually makes me look svelte. Svelte-ish anyway. I do have to get it hemmed, of course. Grrr.
For those of you lurking and don’t know about RITA galas and RWA - the annual national convention for Romance Writers of America is due to commence mid-July. This year, I’m presenting on of the golden RITA statues, so of course I HAD to have a new dress! The RITA and Golden Heart awards ceremony is the last night of the convention and it is the one opportunity most of us have to glam ourselves up.
Because, like Suzanne, my daily writing outfits are way less than glam. Not even casual. They make my almost-13-year-old cringe in embarrassment, which is a huge check in the right column for me!
terrio on 13 Jun 2007 at 9:54 am #
I’m so in this boat. I’m not going to make RWA this year but I’m shooting for NJ in Oct. so at least I can buy clothes for cooler weather which means sleeves! I have the flabbiest arms on the planet. Drives me crazy. I’m a size 12 but not these arms. I have to buy a 16 to fit the arms (and sometimes the girls) but then the top is huge everywhere else. I really need to find a good seamstress.
There is a store here called Catos. I know they are in other regions of the country but not sure how widely spread. (no pun intended) I can shop on their regular size side but I actually like the styles on the plus side better. Very stylish and modern without looking like they are meant for a 16 year old.
Claudia Dain on 13 Jun 2007 at 9:59 am #
Yes!! Aren’t we all suffering from the same problem?
The mirror just CAN’T be right! I don’t look like…THAT? Do I?
I *know* what looks good on me. The same stuff I was buying and wearing (adorably) in high school. What is WRONG with these mirrors? Why do I look like an overstuffed sausage?
Chico’s…I keep hearing how great it is and I’ve even gone in and shopped around, but I can’t, just can’t, spend that kind of money on a single item. I’m a TJMaxx kind of girl.
I haven’t gone shopping for a Rita outfit because I’m not going on stage (with the stars) so no one will either see or care what I’m wearing. It’s a relief, truly. I may wear a pretty bathrobe, just to see if I can get away with it.
Julia London on 13 Jun 2007 at 10:09 am #
Suzanne, you have hit on the thing that drives me to DRINK. I have no style anymore and it is all the clothing manufacturers fault! I am a size larger than I was when I started writing, but that is not my problem. My problem is finding something for a woman in her 40s that doesn’t look like Mother of the Bride or like a 40-something trying to squeeze into a 20-something dress.
Where are all the hip clothes for us?? I demand an answer! Chico’s is great — altho if you are tall, their stuff runs a little short. But in Austin, every woman in my age and weight boat shops at Chico’s, so I go to these events and everyone is in Chico’s. The SAME Chico’s.
My favorite store is way too pricey and I can hardy justify going there very often. But they have clothes for tall women in their 40s: Nordstroms!!
Suzanne Enoch on 13 Jun 2007 at 10:24 am #
I am so with you guys. I haven’t tried Chicos - yet. I tend to catalog shop, but that’s even worse. Roaman’s and Woman Within are specifically for rounder women, but most of the models must have rows of safety pins on the back side for the extra yards of cloth they’re not using.
For you svelte girls, can you still wear the same STYLE of clothes, or do you have the same problem regarding the age in your head versus the one in the mirror? *g*
anneriailin on 13 Jun 2007 at 10:53 am #
I am so with the ’rounder’ woman crowd. And I too remember when I was younger and svelter, but those days are long gone! Ah well, we’ll always have Paris. My pet peeve when I go shopping is…..WHAT WERE THESE DESIGNERS THINKING?? What makes them think I want to look like my grandmothers couch? Why do they think that heavier women have to look like dowdy frumps?? They stick flowers and stuff all over the clothing. You see a blouse that would have normally been cute, and then they stick all of these flowers and butterflies all over it! URGH. Hips. Women have hips, people. Not every woman can fit into a straight skirt or dress. These are my problems when I go shopping and it is very frustrating. I end up wearing slacks and blouses alot.

Oh, ladies, clothes shopping it is NOT just a horror for the curvier crowd. I’m 5′5′ (pretty average, no?) and a size 4/6 (depending on which designer woke up and slapped a label on it that day) and it still leaves me in tears. I have wide shoulders an a non-existant rear end, so dresses are a nightmare. I must have tried on over a hundred dresses to find- One Little Black Dress. And just because the size number is low does not mean that the flesh is as firm as it used to be. Those cute tops look awfully lumpy on this mid-thirties couch potato!
One store that we have here in the northeast is called Coldwater Creek, and it has great quality clothing for moderate prices, and some larger sizes, too. Is it found elsewhere? They have some wonderful structured jackets ala “Stacey and Clinton” from What Not To Wear!
All clothes shopping trips should end with ice cream. At least, I’ll be smiling.

I’ll ignore the fact that I have a 8 1/2 month baby belly to deal with at the moment and speak of my general style.
(although, now that the belly sticks out further than the boobs I’m feeling a bit more proportional.)
My issue is more my height. As in, I don’t have any. I have broad shoulders to support breasts that women pay thousands of dollars to their surgeons to duplicate, a rib cage that sits pretty much right on my hips…which are also broad enough to make me look rather…square.
In my mind, I’m at least 5′10 (which is my baby sister’s height) with all my same measurments…just stretched out over that extra 10 inches. Wouldn’t that be nice?? *rolling my eyes*
I have discovered that the style that looks great on me: the 1950s Donna Reed style dresses. Know which ones I mean? The boat neck, cinched in at the waist and the flared skirt which makes your waist look smaller. And, don’t forget the pumps to make your legs look thinner. *rolling my eyes….again*

Suzie, I hear ya! Chico’s is too expensive for me, I find their sizing ‘iffy’. Now, for inexpensive casual gear, I like Fashion Bug. They often have great sales and I can buy skorts there, so I love them. For dressier styles I’ve had great luck in the ‘plus’ section of Lord and Taylor — again I head for the sale racks. And if you’re into shopping on line, I love alight.com — lots of really cute things in a variety of styles.
Good luck, Suzie! And I’m sure all the goddesses will look simply smashing in Dallas!

My weight fluctuates and I gain and lose the same five pounds all year. This year though, I gained 10 pounds, which means only my sweats fit. So, I have to diet to fit into my biz clothes for RWA. I have been dieting for two months and lost 3 pounds. THREE FREAKING POUNDS. Some of this weight better start dropping off soon or I’m falling face first into a pound bag of Skittles and I’m not kidding.
As for clothes, I am a stress shopper. And since I am always stressed about something, I tend to shop a lot. For classic pieces, I tend to buy Jones NY or Ann Taylor. For more casual, I shop at Ann Taylor Loft and Banana Republic. And I’ll second Dillard’s. Sometimes they really have some good stuff. The key is try on a lot of clothes. I always figure if I’m going to bother to get undressed, I’m trying on a heap of stuff.

I’m taking notes, and seeing another shopping excursion in my near future. Of course if I order from a catalog, I don’t actually have to go anywhere — and NOBODY gets to see how awful the clothes look on me except for me.
I’m thinking maybe everybody should be required to wear mumus. *g* I’d definitely feel better, then.

Another 5 footer chiming in! It is sooo hard to find anything stylish for those of us who are “petite” in height but not in other ways. :-O
And don’t get me started on trying to find something that looks right for a woman over 40. I don’t want to dress like a teenager, and most of the stores seem to cater to that “style.”
Anneriailin—- Elastic is my new best friend, along with solid colors or simple patterns. I agree with you about the huge flowers. They are even less attractive on those of us who are short. I haven’t bought a dress in a long time. I have to buy skirts and tops, to get something to fit. I does have wardrobe-expanding potential, though.
I have news for all of you: the designers make clothes that look good on HANGERS, not normal people. That’s why the starved models are shaped like hangers. LOL You really have to look to find something designed for a female body.
DebMarlowe on 13 Jun 2007 at 12:50 pm #
How timely! I had a doctor’s appointment today, right near the mall, and I knew that today was the first day of Coldwater Creek’s 60 percent off sale. So I went, along with a whole lotta ladies!
And now I am depressed. Sigh.
Short and round do not go with shopping. I’m not sure what it goes with, either, which is why I need to get my behind to the gym more often.
I did go into Chicos and discover that they have that underwear that everyone is talking about–Spanx–for holding it all in!
Now I’m gonna check out all these links you ladies are sharing. Thanks!
Nicole Jordan on 13 Jun 2007 at 12:57 pm #
Ditto everything Julia said!! Sounds like we share the same problems. And I absolutely HATEHATEHATE to shop. I really really need to get some new underwear since mine are in rags, and I’m dreading even trying.
What I want to know is, why do clothes always look so great on the catalogue models (Chico’s is a perfect example) and they look so awful on me?

Lane Bryant is a good store if you are tying to look hip.. I don’t know how much evening wear.
I used to shop at a store when I lived in Canada that had two section, one for the young hip plus sized clothing, another for the more tame everyday kind of look. I loved that store and I miss it.
I bought a few thing from Romans online, that might even be where you got your image, but I hate that they use skinny models to show us plus sized clothing.
I admit that I look much better in skirts than I do in dresses. I have to wear a jacket or a shawl if I wear a dress, so I can hide the tummy.

Suzie, you have touched a raw nerve in us all. I moaned about this to my karate teacher this afternoon as we were exercising (because I am betwen books, of course) and she agreed. She can’t wear clothes off the rack because she is too small now. (She lost mucho sizes doing karate which is why I’m taking her classes now! But it doesn’t work via osmosis. I actually have to sweat. Dang.)
Anyway, she said years ago she was modeling and this size 8 girl said she was a “Plus Size” model, because the normal clothes in the show didn’t fit her. I growled menacingly at this indignity. My teacher then said, “We should start our own clothing design company.” I said, “Who will design the clothes? I have no taste or talent.” She said she did, and now she’s noodling it. Hmmm. We could be on to something here.
Brandy on 13 Jun 2007 at 1:18 pm #
Oooh, I love Coldwater Creek, and I too recieved a postcard about the 60% sale! Another ‘designer’ that makes nice clothes for rounder women is Liz Claiborne, her upper sizes are manufactured under the Elisabeth(sp) name, can be found at Dilliards and Macy’s. I recently bought a wrap dress from IGIG and I don’t look stupid in it, so I vote you check them out. (igigi.com) They have nice dresses.
As for everyday style, if you were to look in my closet all you would see is shorts and t-shirts(for summer), long sleeve t-shirts and sweats(for winter)(I have one pair of jeans) and dressier clothing for Church. There doesn’t seem to be any in-between clothes. But, considering I’m a SAHM I guess I can’t complain.
Good luck with the shopping ladies!
Karen Rose on 13 Jun 2007 at 1:22 pm #
Oh, one other thing. Macy’s in NYC has a nice selection of cocktail dresses in women’s sizes. I bought a little black dress that is tres chic. Shows off the cleavage I’ve been trying to hide for years, but I said, hey - if you got ‘em, flaunt ‘em. Within reason of course. I found this gorrrrrgeous dress in royal blue, sequins and such and I looked good in it, but it was $200 and I couldn’t make myself do it. Sigh. I wish I had now, but temptation is squarely out of reach as I’m home in FL now. But Macy’s NY is a great store! It’s an entire city block with TWO FLOORS of just shoes. I was amazed.
Cail on 13 Jun 2007 at 1:28 pm #
Rachel, you shop in the exact same places I do!
my biggest issue is that most pants are cut wrong for me. Recently however, a bunch of stores have come out with the ‘curvy’ style (Gap, J Crew etc) and it’s been my lifesaver!
My biggest problem is finding undergarments that fit correctly. Apparently stores like Victoria Secret don’t realize that people can have small rib cages and large boobs. thanks a lot victoria.
SuzyQ on 13 Jun 2007 at 2:26 pm #
OK, I’m right there with ya! My problem is I’m bigger up top than on the bottom, so I have to shop for separates. I have some outfits from Chico’s (which I love) but HSN and QVC offer their own versions of Chico’s material called Slinky and Citiknits, which are cheaper - especially if they are a today’s special. These cloths are comfortable to wear and they travel and wash well.
I also fell in love with the modern tee shirts and bras from Lane Bryant, but like foreverdelayed mentioned they don’t have much evening wear.
For dressy outfits, I’ve always had luck in Lord & Taylor.
Kay on 13 Jun 2007 at 2:30 pm #
Cail–try Victoria’s Secret online. They have a bigger selection than the stores.
Dockers has some slacks that fit short, curvy women! I just had good luck at J.Jill on skirts with elastic waists & they were on sale.
Keri Ford on 13 Jun 2007 at 3:11 pm #
For those of you made with hips and nothing else north of the hip bones, I’ve found venus.com and ambercrombie and Fitch jeans work the best on me. Also, Frederick’s Of Hollywoods bra’s are sized different than everybody else. So I feel bustier when their ‘c’ cup fits my victoria’s secret and everywhere else ‘b’s.
i’m going to do the probably not too smart thing and wait to do my RWA shopping in hopes I’ll drop enough pounds to fit my business clothes.
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 3:47 pm #
I love Coldwater Creek though not everything I find in there will fit my weird body. They have a new CC Outlet website with great prices.
I attend a black tie charity ball every winter and have had good luck finding stylish, age-flattering gowns at Dillards, Belks and even JC Penney. I don’t want to look like an old lady but neither do I want to look like I’m channeling my former 20-something self.
My biggest complaint for years was not being able to find a bra that fit. I have a small back and shoulders but big boobs. (Thanks, Grandma!) Two years ago, thanks to Oprah, I discovered the best bra store in the world (for me). The clothes aren’t as big a deal anymore. I have bras that fit, my poor beleaguered girls look perky (ok, somewhat perky) again and I am one happy camper!
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 3:49 pm #
Kay, thanks for the Dockers rec. I have slim hips but the waist doesn’t follow along. If I find jeans that fit the hips I don’t have a prayer of ever getting them zipped. Same goes with jeans that fit my waist. They look like I could fit a couple more people in the hips.
zambonigirl on 13 Jun 2007 at 3:58 pm #
Oh, man. I hear you about clothes! It’s why I spend so much money on purses and shoes.
According to Stacy and Clinton, my style gurus from What Not To Wear, the best thing that anyone can do is find themselves a good structured jacket. Big breasts? Get a blazer with several buttons, but stay away from double-breasted styles. Small breasts? Go with a single button. Just personally, I think that most women kill in a great black suit. For your occasion, you could totally go with a longer straight skirt with a kick-pleat in the back, paired with a blazer that will flatter your particular figure, and then get a kicky pair of spiky red heels. Add some red beads or a red cuff bracelet to tie in the shoes. Rawr! *claw gestures with hands*
You’re a beautiful woman with great hair, and you can work your body no matter what size it is.
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 4:02 pm #
Zambonigirl, I LOVE your style!
Kay on 13 Jun 2007 at 4:04 pm #
Brandy–I just checked out igigi. WOW. The models don’t look like they’ve been starved since puberty. They look like REAL, ATTRACTIVE, WOMEN. They remind me of the mom in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. What a beautiful woman, and not skinny, either.
Thanks so much for the site. I have a black tie thing in September, and this will be a lifesaver.

Kay, glad you like Igigi! I LOVE my wrap dress from them and am wanting another dress from their site. And you’re right. The models are gorgeous and don’t look like a good breeze would knock them over.
PJ, yes please spill on the bra store! I am having the hardest time finding a bra! (I have a large rib cage and then not so large boobs! So finding comfortable bras are hard!)

OOOOOHHHH!
I remembered another hint! The store New York and Company has cami-style tank tops that have REAL BRAS in them- not those useless “shelf bra” things that flatter no-one over 12 years old. They have underwire, good coverage, and adjustable straps. They come in 4-5 basic colors and are a great little layering item!
I have three!

PJ - don’t mean to step on your toes, but is the store Intimacy the one you are referring to on Oprah? If they are as good as you say, it may be worth the trip to the city.
I love the look of Victoria’s Secret but I just can’t wear their bras. I also can’t wear any of the molded cups, because I big enough to begin with. I found that the cotton bras from Lane Bryant are really comfortable and shape well.
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 8:01 pm #
Sorry I went MIA. The dogs were demanding mommy’s attention.
Yes, SuzyQ, the store is Intimacy. I go to the one in Atlanta. They also have stores in NYC and Chicago. The bras are expensive but worth every penny, imo.
Most of their bras are made in Europe. The ones I have are two years old and haven’t even begun to stretch out. The best way to buy from them is to visit one of their stores for a “professional fitting”. Once they determine your best size you’re put into their computer and all future bras can then be purchased from their website if you don’t live close by. Also, they told me if the back strap on my bra wears out but the cups are still in good condition I can mail the bra to them and they will replace the back band/strap at no charge.
to be continued…..
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 8:12 pm #
I had been buying 36DD bras. The size was too large to give me the support I needed but I had to go to that size to find cups that I didn’t overflow. If any of you have bought that size you know they mostly come in plain styles of black, beige and white. That’s it. Also, I was having a lot of back aches and I didn’t realize just how bad I looked until I returned from a trip and saw the pictures that had been taken of me. OMG! I was horrified!
It’s amazing how good the sales reps at Intimacy are. They don’t measure you. They size you by sight and my fitter was excellent. She sized me at a 32GG (who knew there was such a size? lol) and the bras she brought for me to try on fit perfectly. They were gorgeous bras in deep burguncy, midnight blue with beautiful silver threading, blacks, greens, so many beautiful colors and styles.
to be continued…
PJ on 13 Jun 2007 at 8:41 pm #
With the new bra I looked like I had lost 10 pounds. There were no bulges around the band and the girls were higher than they had been in years! I’ve since bought six bras in different styles and colors from them and love them all. I’ve sent friends there and they’ve all been ecstatic over their new bras. One friend was set for breast reduction surgery and has now been wearing her new bras for two years with no more back problems and didn’t have to undergo the surgery. I know I sound like I’m on their payroll but I just can’t say enough about how much getting bras that FIT has done for me. Oh, and not all of my friends are big breasted. One had been wearing a sagging A cup and always wore baggy tops and hunched her shoulders. They put her into a lightly padded C with a different size back. The change in her posture and self esteem was amazing. She even wore a snug top home on the plane to surprise her husband. I hear it was a very good night!
Julia London on 13 Jun 2007 at 8:52 pm #
PJ, that is an incredible difference, isn’t it? From a 36 to a 32 and bigger cups? No wonder your back hurt–your must not have gotten any support.
I think I will go to New York just to buy a bra!
P.S. - I have the same problem you do with pants. if it fits the waist, the hips are huge. If it fits the hips, the waist is tiiiiiiiight.
zambonigirl on 13 Jun 2007 at 10:56 pm #
Wow, PJ! I am going to check that store out. I still can’t figure out what size I am. Sometimes I’m a G cup, sometimes a DDD. The band is always changing with the cup size…
You know, women think that having large breasts will be nice, but there’s a huge difference between silicone implants and actual heavy breast tissue.
Brandy on 14 Jun 2007 at 12:30 am #
Thanks PJ! Now I just need to get up the nerve to travel that far, for a bra! *G*

Who was the nitwit that thought of putting darts in blouses from under the arm pit to the middle of the shirt? Some of us that have a chest do not need the fact pointed out to the world.
I buy most of my work clothes at JC Penney or Herbergers. Even though I’m only 5′2″, I have to buy regular instead of petite so the waist isn’t to tight and the hem doesn’t ride up to high.
I bought a dress back in 02 from Dillard’s for special occasions. Would you believe it fit last month when I tried it on, even though it is a size smaller than I currently wear?

Time to exit stage left until I jump in on a discussion where I have something useful to contribute. ::blush::
