Laaaadies and Goddessesssss, it’s the MATCH game!
Apr 29th 2007
Karen HawkinsGoddess Grins
I love games. I love crosswords and sudokus and Rook and Connect Four and Monopoly and oh, anything where one person can BEAT another. I figure some of you might like to play games, too.
So I came up with a game just for us goddesses here at thegoddessblogs.com.
THE RULES: Look at your lovely author goddesses above. Below are some fun facts I’ve collected from them. All YOU have to do is match the Fun Facts with the Author Goddesses.
THE ANSWERS: The correct answers (and the winner) will be announced at ten p.m!
THE PRIZE: The goddess who FIRST posts ALL of the right answers will be lauded as The Goddess Guesser Extraordinaire AND will receive an ADVANCED READING COPY of my August 21st release, TO SCOTLAND WITH LOVE.
Some of these are tricky! And just to make it REALLY hard, I tossed in two extra. I WILL tell you this … there is at least one fun fact per goddess. After that, it’s up to you to figure out who did what or was what or wants what or — oh, you get it.
THE FUN FACTS:
1. In college I worked for a corporate law firm — hence my affection for lawyer jokes in my stories.
![]()
2. I once had a camel named after me by a Bedouin tribe in Oman.
3. I spent my seventeenth birthday in a Guatemalan prison.
4. I waitressed at Shoney’s for two whole years while in college. Did you know the strawberry pie leaves permanent stains? To this day, the palm of my right hand is red.
5. I once had a Top Secret security clearance. (Or was it Just Secret? I don’t remember, but it was one or the other!)
6. In the sixth grade I once jumped into a pool of Jello for the chance to win a diamond ring. No, I didn’t win.
![]()
7. My Pampers production lines made the first elasticized diapers in the world.
8. I’m walking the streets of London right now. Yup. That’s me — a London Street Walker.
9. At the age of eleven, I had to take the entire series of rabies shots–sixteen in the belly (including two boosters) and two in the butt.
10. I skipped my college graduation to attend a Star Trek convention and bid on Spock’s right ear.
Now put on your thinking caps, look at your goddess pictures above, and get to guessing!

And I’m sure we all have some crazy stories…hehe…I can tell you about the two times I DID slide into 1000 gallons of jello…it was for charity…and so much fun!!

Will there be a second prize? Or maybe a prize for getting them all wrong?
Perhaps you can have your readers post their most unusual experience!
Karen Hawkins on 29 Apr 2007 at 2:30 pm #
Hey, I’m not admitting ANYTHING. Could be Shoney’s … could be the camel naming . . . could be the security clearance … I’m not saying!!!
However, if I had to guess these myself, I don’t think I could get them all right, either. Some of them, yes. But not all.
Karen Hawkins on 29 Apr 2007 at 2:38 pm #
Btw, when I asked for the tidbits from our authors, I was astounded, too, so I’d NEVER laugh at your guesses, although … it’s interesting to see who you think is capable of what! Tee hee!!!
Kim, I wanna hear about the jello things for charity. Sounds messy, but Do Tell!
And Kay, yes, hearing all of your unusual experiences would be a totally AWESOME blog. We’re gonna have to do that. And I’ll think about the second prize or a prize for getting them all wrong. Kay, you’re full of great ideas today!

Hmm..ok I’ll dish on the Jello splash (that’s what the even was called!) but what happens if no one gets ALL of them right? Is the winner whoever gets the closest?
Anyways, I did the Jello Splash even twice (once in 8th grade and once in college…) it was for the Leukemia Society of America in Buffalo, NY (we have a great Cancer hospital there.) Anyways, the second time I did the event is such a better story–I raised over $300 for the charity and took part in the costume competition. I went dressed as the french maid that I had been at Halloween…fishnets and all! I made it to the top ten finalists and yes, got hit on by the Dr. Evil Look-alike from the Austin Powers group (they won the contest of course!)
And then when my name was called, I saucily tossed off my high heeled shoes (who can houseclean in those anyways?) and slid into a vat with 1000 gallon of red jello (I think it was cherry or strawberry…it was yummy!) It was such a unique experience!

Hmm . . . could #10s mention of Spock throw some doubts in there? You never know who might be a Trekkie fan. They show up all over the place.
Kim, love the story! You soooo should have won that contest, btw. But tell me, was it cold jello? Or warm jello? Cause I’ve heard it can be either.

This is fun!!! I think there were some sort of trick questions. Now you have me trying to re-guess my guesses! Can’t wait to hear the anwers, and the story behind them!*
Karen Hawkins on 29 Apr 2007 at 10:38 pm #
No one got them all, BUT I’m thinking of giving prizes anyway…. I’ll let you know tomorrow. I loooove giving prizes, so perhaps I shall anyway!
Meanwhile, the answers are:
1. Likes to make lawyer jokes - Suzanne Enoch.
2. Had camel named after her - Julia London (Duh! You had doubts?)
3. Spent 17th birthday in Guatemalan prison - Karen … Rose, of course!
4. Worked at Shoneys - Moi, Karen Hawkins of the Red Palm
5. Had Top Secret or Secret Clearance once - Sabrina Jeffries
6. Jumped in pool of jello to win diamond ring - Rachel Gibson (who else?)
7. Pampers production line produced first elastic diapers - Nicole Jordan
8. London Street Walker - aka sight seeing in London this week - Claudia Dain (who isn’t here to defend herself!)
9. Had series of rabies shots - Sabrina Jeffries (which is why she’s not afraid of the rest of the goddesses!)
and 10. Skipped graduation to bid on Spock’s ear - Suzanne Enoch
Tune in tomorrow to hear all of the stories connected with our Match Game!
gannon on 29 Apr 2007 at 10:44 pm #
Wow, was I off! Can’t wait to hear all the juicy stories tomorrow!
ladydawgfan on 29 Apr 2007 at 11:09 pm #
Kewl!! I got 6 out of 10 correct!!! I thought that #5 was Julia L because her bio mentioned that she worked in the bowels of DC. I figured that someone who worked for the government would need a security clearance.
And #7 was a tricky question to answer since two Goddesses mentioned jobs producing disposable diapers in their bios.
What I really want to know is the story behind #3!!! (Although it’s probably something as innocuous as a tour through the area in which the prison is located.)

Sabrina Jeffries on 30 Apr 2007 at 12:06 am #
I’m not sure how to interpret the fact that NOT A SINGLE PERSON (even my close friend, Deb Marlowe) guessed I could have a security clearance. What, you people think I can’t keep a secret? Huh? Sheesh!
Seriously, though, believe it or not, I worked as a tech. writer for a year or so in the Security Dept. of the O&M contractor (Operations and Maintenance, for you civilians) to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. I edited the classified documents. I kid you not. I am sworn to secrecy on what I read (trust me, it’s not that interesting). In fact, now that I have told you this, I will have to kill you.
Kidding! Well, about the killing you part. The rest is true.
As for the rabies shots, I figured just about everybody would guess that one. It’s hard to grow up in Thailand and NOT be exposed to rabies. Sigh.
dbrown3400 on 30 Apr 2007 at 12:40 am #
This was great fun. At one point I was so confused I had one Goddess as a secret agent working at Shoney’s, knee-deep in Jello while saving for a trip to London.

Karen Rose on 30 Apr 2007 at 12:52 am #
What I think is funny is that nobody guess that Julia had the camel named after her!
Okay - here’s the skinny on the prison: It was July, 1981, and my birthday. Reagan was firing the air traffic controllers, Charles and Di were doin’ the nuptuals at St. Paul’s - and I was in Guatemala on a missionary tour with the teen group from my church. Now WHY anyone would take 40 teenagers, only three of whom spoke much Spanish (I did then) to Guatemala of ALL PLACES in the freaking WORLD is beyond me. Why my MOTHER let me GO is another big question in my mind.
It was, a surreally incredible experience. For you youngsters, Central America was the hotbed of communist upheaval and guerilla warfare in the eighties. And for two weeks - I was there.
We were on TV (a kids’ Bozo The Clown type show). We went to parks, churches, schools, military installations, and two prisons. The men’s prison was a fairly sanitary experience as I recall.
Karen Rose on 30 Apr 2007 at 12:57 am #
We had a big kind of tent meeting in the open air (fences and armed guards everywhere) and I remember hundreds of men sitting cross-legged. I remember bright sunshine.
The women’s prison … Hmm. Different experience. It was night, I think. I know we went inside this big building and I remember getting frisked. Some of the girls in the group got frisked a little more thoroughly than others. I remember a few of them crying. Sober thoughts. I remember the sound of that big door closing and just being scared.
And never being so happy when that door opened and we all walked out. Whew.
The next week we were on our way to a military installation in a big school bus. As we scaled the mountain roads, one of the tires would occasional hit open air, the roads were so narrow. Once we got to where we going, we found out that a bomb had exploded on the road an hour after we’d passed. But bombs were pretty common occurrences and nobody seemed the least bit worried that we’d …
Karen Rose on 30 Apr 2007 at 12:59 am #
been the targets. I did have some fun experiences there too, so don’t think it was all dismal and prisons and bombs - but it was harrowing for sure!!
When we finally got back to Miami - plane layover - and I called my mom to say I was safe - we hadn’t been able to call our folks the whole two weeks, I remember her just sobbing. She didn’t say a word, but sobbed for minutes.
The world is a fascinating place…
KMB25 on 30 Apr 2007 at 1:16 am #
Karen Rose…WOW! I know my mom would NEVER have let me go on a trip like that..and she was a spanish teacher and pretty cool about those kinds of things! What an experience!
I just have to say…I got 7 out of 10 and I’m so excited!!! I had absolutely NO IDEA that Julia would have had a camel named after her…Julia…a CAMEL???? Say it ain’t so!!!
(I can just picture it in my head now…here julia! here julia! As the camel spits on me…hee hee)
~Kim
gannon on 30 Apr 2007 at 1:33 am #
Karen, now that’s quite a story! My mom would have freaked!
I got 5 out of 10, which is better than I expected! I thought for sure Julia had the security clearance since she mentioned working for the govt., but I never thought she would have a camel named after her.
What other secrets are you keeping, Goddesses?
Judy on 30 Apr 2007 at 2:05 am #
HA! Talk about being waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off. Jeez louise. So KarenH, you can totally play Lady Macbeth and do the whole “Out, damn spot! Out, I say!” I’m just saying…
I really want to know about the Jello dive, sounds interesting…
Poor KarenR, at you can’t say your life wasn’t without an adventure lol!
Ashefrog on 30 Apr 2007 at 5:50 am #
I wonder if Julia helped birth that camel and because she saved its infant life they bestowed the honor of naming the camel after her. Sure hope it was a female.
Sabrina - I had you pegged for security clearance but I didn’t know but a couple of others so I didn’t post. I thought it was something much more top secret and to do with science experiments.
Karen R. - my Mom or more my Dad would never have let me go. But what an experience. Thank goodness everyone came home safe.
Can’t wait to hear the rest of the stories.
You ladies sure have led “interesting” lives.
Julia London on 30 Apr 2007 at 8:34 am #
First of all, for those of you who logically chose me as having the secret clearance, it was a good choice - I did have a clearance when working in the bowels of federal government, LOL — but it was not my fun fact.
The camel: About the same time Karen was in Guatemalan prison, I was on an exchanged trip in the Middle East, in the Kindgom of Oman. We did the same thing — traveled all over the country, met their dignitaries, went to a school and watched kids perform and were on a national news broadcast that night (not a lot going on in Oman).
My handler had come from a bedouin tribe, had gone to school and even studied abroad. So he introduced me to his tribe who happened to be near Muscat at the time with lots of camels. One thing led to another–I rode a camel and was apparently such a hit with it that they named one of their baby camels after me. She lumbered off into the desert with my name along with the rest of the herd. Wonder where she is now?
kimber on 30 Apr 2007 at 8:46 am #
Wow, what interesting stories. I was way off. But like I said, they were tricky questions. Can’t wait to hear the rest.
Kasey on 30 Apr 2007 at 8:50 am #
Wow, those were some great stories and I would never have guessed any of those. I am sorry that I missed the contest yesterday but I was out of town over the weekend. It looks like it was fun!
Nicole Jordan on 30 Apr 2007 at 9:06 am #
I would love to have a camel named after me! But not some of the other stuff, for sure.
My Pampers story is sooo tame compared to those, lol. I worked for Procter&Gamble for years as an engineering manager, and my manufacturing lines tested the first experimental E diapers, with elastic waistbands and leg bands. It’s a very complicated process, to glue the elastic on a pad, then turn the pad 90 degrees. So we had tons of scrap and worked really long hours for months. But lot of moms consider the sacrifices we made worth it!
In education and work experience, I’m probably closest to Karen Rose. But I did more management than enjineering. When I left P&G, I had 70+ people working for me… 3- shift operation, 6 days/week. Very high stress! Which is why I was so grateful my dh supported me writing full time. It was heaven not to have to deal with the myriad problems of a production process and just be responsible for my own little self.
NicoleJ
Karen Rose on 30 Apr 2007 at 9:20 am #
As fate would have it, I also would visit Nicole’s Pampers plant from time to time in my P&G days. It is an amazing feat, watching those diapers zip by at what seemed like the speed of light. I’d stand there and watch them for minutes at a time, almost hypnotized. I’m not a “mechanical” engineer - so watching all those gears and widgets make those elasticized diapers was always something of an awe-inspiring thrill! I worked on the plastics and adhesives side as a chemical engineer and always had amazing respect for the minds and hands that could turn those into millions of diapers.
RachelG on 30 Apr 2007 at 9:24 am #
Ahh . . . the Jello jump. A local radio station filled an above ground pool with green Jello. At the bottom of the pool were little smooth stone with numbers painted on them. Everyone had to dive in one at at time and swim around and find a stone. I did get one, but all I won was a “I Jumped For Jello” T-shirt. I was in the seventh grade.
Helen K on 30 Apr 2007 at 10:20 am #
Very Cool stories, Goddesses. Sorry I missed all the fun!
Karen Hawkins on 30 Apr 2007 at 10:27 am #
Ah yes, Judy, I could play Lady MacBeth. Actually, the red has faded now, but for a long time it was REALLY noticeable. Sometimes I still go to Shoney’s for their hot fudge cake. Yummmm!
Btw, though Julia London did have a security clearance, it wasn’t Top Secret, but Secret, and she DOES remember which one it was, so we’re safe saying that #5 applies ONLY to our darling, occasionally forgetful, Sabrina Jeffries.
Ok, I’m off to spend a day with my kids. I’m going to officially announce the winners when I come back, so check in and see. I’ve an idea about how to do this, but I have to have some help from my other goddesses.
Hugs, dahlinks! Back at ten.

Okay, how come EVERYBODY knew I was the Star Trek gal? *g* In my defense, it was the Star Trek 25th anniversary convention, and all the cast members of the original show were there. And because I wasn’t willing to spend $300 for a piece of latex, I didn’t go home with Spock’s ear. And I heard later that my UCI grad ceremony lasted for 3 hours and was 100 degrees, plus those robes. I think I made the right decision.
Oh, and the lawyer thing. See, everybody forgot that I write contemporaries, too, huh? I worked for those lawyers for about four years, before I went on later to work for car salespeople for 11 years. Boy, I can pick ‘em.
gannon on 30 Apr 2007 at 1:04 pm #
Julia, great story about the camel. My husband loves Oman. We lived in Bahrain for 2 years and my dh went to Oman a few times. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go. He wants to go there sometime with me, sans children, and stay at the Al Bustan.

While not a single person who got them all right (ok, ok, perhaps that WAS a Herculean task … but we’re all goddesses here, so … it could happen) we do have a tie for FIRST PLACE:
Two Kims — KMB25 (Kim) and KimW! For making such incredible good guesses (and you did!) on August 1st, I’m going to send each of you an autographed, bound, uncorrected galley proof of TO SCOTLAND WITH LOVE, which is officially released August 21st.

However, I won an ARC of Christina Dodd’s, SCENT OF DARKNESS on Squawk Radio recently, so I shouldn’t be too greedy.
I will say this—it was AWESOME!!!! Everyone should run to the nearest bookstore to buy it in July.

Congrats girls! Great contest, Karen, I meant to say earlier I love games too. Sudoku games are one of my favorites, though I love all games. Scategories, Scramble, even Boggle, which I play with my kids all the time. I even love dice and card games. We have big game nights @ our house a few times a month!

Sudoku is awesome. I play it when I travel and every night before bed. I also do the one online at MSNBC.com … it’s under games.
Of course, I never play it when I should be writing. (innocent look) Ever.
