Olympian Talent

I just spent my first little vacation in two years in Las wcup.jpgVegas watching the Equestrian World Cup, which featured international, world-class riders competing in dressage and show jumping. The athletes and horses were incredible, exhibiting skills honed over many, many years.

I know those riders toiled and sacrificed to get where they are. But to be that good – to reach Olympic heights – they also need to have an innate talent that most of us can only dream of.dressage.jpg

How I envy their talent, to be physically capable of competing at that level. I have a few hard-won talents myself, but none that can match even a fraction of theirs. And I have so many frustrating limitations. For example, as a kid during cheerleader tryouts, I couldn’t do the splits to save my life, so of course I didn’t make the squad. (I’m sure that experience warped me for years.)

jump.jpgIf I could pick one mortal talent I would love to have, it would be to ride like those competitors in Vegas.

What about you? What talent would you love to have?  Have you ever suffered because you didn’t have the talent or skills you needed to participate or to achieve your goals?

I would love a good singing voice. Not to sing professionally, but good enough for a solo with the choir or not have my flat notes echo off the walls when I’m in the shower.

My mother sang with Tulsa Opera for ten years, sang solos for our church choir and other events around town. I had built-in competition and she wasn’t too encouraging regarding my singing efforts either.

My voice isn’t that bad, just a little off kilter so when we had a talent show at my job about twenty years ago I met the challenge. There is one song I can do okay, Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man from Showboat, flat notes and all. There were going to be five or six of us in this contest, which was a morale thing anyway. I knew I couldn’t do the song straight so I dressed up as a bag lady, big bulky trench coat, dirty teeth and face, scraggly hair, the whole bit. I got the most applause but the contest went to the salesman who needed the biggest morale boost .

I wish I’d stuck with my singing. I was in an all female accapella group in my 20’s but after moving, I let it filter off. I still sing around the house and in the car, but I miss performing. Which is hilarious because I am so shy I practically shook apart before each performance.
I also wish I’d had more talent with my poetry and writing. I’m starting back with that though. I have written several new poems over the past year and I write book reviews (but not professionally).

  3. Stacy ~ on 25 Apr 2007 at 5:34 am #

I’m going to go with singing too. I love how music makes me feel, and I’ve always admired people who have beautiful, strong, powerful voices - Martina McBride, Christina Aguillera, LeAnn Rhimes, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban. I don’t know if I’d want to perform for an audience, but I would love to be able to sing my little heart out.

Secondly, I wish I had more discipline and stuck with writing. When I was younger I used to write stories, but it’s been years. It’s my own fault for not seeing it through. Now I find it way too easy to get distracted by other things.

I wish I had an innate talent for writing. And acting. I would love to act. Mostly, though, I wish I, like Stacy above, had the discipline to stick with something. Or the gumption to just go for it. I think that, more than any talent, would help me out a lot.

In elementary school my best friend and I decided to try out for the school chorus. I thought that I would make it for sure, I loved to sing, my parents loved to hear me sing, no problem. My older sister said that I was horrible and I’d only make a fool of myself, but I thought she was just being my mean older sister. I thought I sang great in the audition, a few days later we were told who made it, and I wasn’t on the list. I asked the music teacher “why”, she asked me what else I like to do besides sing. I told her I loved to play softball and I loved girl scouts. She told me to stick with those two things and that “not everyone has a good singing voice”. I cried my eyes out all afternoon. My sister asked what was wrong and I told her, I expected an “I told you so” but she didn’t say it ahe just asked if I wanted to go outside and play catch. I always sing while listening yo music and tell people they can just get over it if they don’t like my voice, singing makes me happy.

    Ohh! Great blog, Nicole!!!

I’d like to be able to dance like Cinderella, being swooped around the room, all graceful ‘n stuff. I’ve thought about taking lessons but honestly, I never can remember what order to do steps in. I know ’cause I can’t keep up in aerobics class, so …

    :(

Oh well, I make a great audience for people who do dance, and that’s important too!

  7. SuzyQ on 25 Apr 2007 at 7:50 am #

I wish I could play the piano. I took lessons when I was younger, but never stuck with it. Now I regret it. I love music and would love to be able to play.

My son likes the guitar and the drums and my daughter plays with the keyboard. They are young right now, but I really want them to play some sort of instrument. It is also supposed to help them academically.

I love watching figure skating on television and have always wanted to be able to do what the figure skaters do. However, when I strap thin metal blades on my feet, I have all the grace of an elephant on roller skates. It ain’t pretty!!! I am one of the board bunnies, those poor people who cling to the boards to guide themselves around the rink because if they let go, they will end up on their keisters!! Oh, well, a girl can dream . . .

I used to play competitive tennis in a league in Washington, DC. As much as I practiced, I could never seem to get past a certain level. That was one thing I always wanted to do — to be a great tennis player. I had to settle for being a a really great mediocre one, LOL.

  10. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 9:05 am #

Julia … bet I could kick your arse in tennis.

    Just sayin’ ….

Karen H, practicing her lob as she writes

  11. SuzyQ on 25 Apr 2007 at 9:26 am #

Are we invited to watch the match??? Please let us know . . .

  12. KMB25 on 25 Apr 2007 at 9:45 am #

Now that would be one match I would pay to see!

Anyways, I have wished for a long time that I could do Irish step-dancing better than I do…I wish I had started younger (and that my body would go the same way the kids’ bodies do…but my hips just don’t go that way!)

I’ve also for a long time wanted to learn to play tennis. When the hubby and I move to Atlanta, his friend’s wife has already invited me to join their tennis league…even though I’ll pretty much suck! When I hit the ball, it only sometimes goes OVER the net, but usually it goes way up high in the air…I know I’m doing something wrong!! But I’m excited about learning :)

Bring it on, Karen. To make it even, I will play with a frying pan.

I think I would have loved to have been a dancer in any form of a dance.

I had ballet lessons until I was 13. It was when I noticed that ballerina’s were not 5′1″ but waif like and taller. I think I would have loved to have been like a Vegas showgirl because of all the costumes or lack of costumes.

My Mother in the 50’s was a dancing queen. She won a lot of championships in Clubs like Roseland, The Latin Quarter and the Copacabana. I love looking at her pictures with all her trophies. My Uncle Frank was also a wonderful dancer in the 50’s and 60’s that travelled the world. He was the Mambo King. He did it all: Mambo, Samba, Paso Doble etc

  15. Sabrina Jeffries on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:32 am #

I wish I could play the piano. I used to be very active in choruses, choirs, and small bands–I have a fairly decent voice. These days I only use it to sing for my son (he does love having his mommy sing to him). But if I could play the piano, I could accompany myself while I sing. I never even took lessons. I took guitar lessons for a while, but hated practicing (the strings hurt my fingers too much). Also, my fingers are too short to do the bar chords, so I never really progressed. But the little I’ve tried with the piano, I’ve enjoyed. Once in a while, I consider taking lessons as an adult–I just can’t fit it in right now!

Oh, and I wish I could draw or paint or anything artistic like that. I just don’t have the eye for it. I’m so jealous of Ursula! She does such fabulous work, and I couldn’t even begin to do what she does. I can’t even sketch something I have in my head. It comes out looking funny.

  16. gannon on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:50 am #

Kim, ever since I saw Riverdance on TV, I’ve wanted to be able to Irish step-dance. I have since seen Riverdance three times live–amazing!! If I could just dance like that for 5 minutes, I’d be happy. I thought about taking a class–I could always be the comic relief, when I fall on my arse! :)

  17. gannon on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:53 am #

Sabrina, I did the whole chorus gig, too, but I think it would be wonderful to play the piano. Alas, I never took lessons. Maybe someday…..

I envy artists. What an amazing gift! I know I have no natural born talent for that, although my daughter does. She’s 7 and can draw far better than me. I’m more of a stick figure kind of girl!

  18. Julia London on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:57 am #

Ah, piano…was forced to take lessons from first grade through senior year in high school. My sisters are very accomplished. I was awful. All those lessons, all that money….and I could never get past banging the keys like I was playing the gopher pop-up game.

  19. Julia London on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:58 am #

P.S. — I am seeing a trend here with me. Lots of practice = mediocrity in most things, hahahaha

  20. TheNightPoet on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:19 am #

Gannon, I just saw Riverdance for the first time this year!! It was awesome! I took dance classes from the age of 3 all the way through my senior year of high school. When I was in high school, we did Riverdance for a tap production. It was a lot of fun. We took it to competition and won first place!! It was a blast. :)

As for what talent I would love to have….hmmm. Good question. I would love to read minds. I would also love to be able to stand up in front of a crowd and sing to my heart’s content. I can sing, but I get major stage fright. My throat closes up and my voice comes out strained and off-key. I had a choir teacher in high school that I can blame for that. He belittled me and the rest of my class. He had a favorite in the class and according to him, she had a great voice and could do no wrong. It was so aggravating.

    Andrea

  21. SuzyQ on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:22 am #

Oh, Julia! but never mediocre in writing! I am reading PPP now and loving it! :)

  22. ladydawgfan on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:26 am #

Here’s an oddity for you: I can sing pretty good, in fact, I sing first soprano with my church choir, but I can’t read music at all!! I learn the pieces by listening carefully to the choir director and the organist, and then learning the piece by ear. I’ll download professional versions of some of the more difficult pieces to hear the parts, and follow along with my music in hand. I have tried to learn to read the music, but it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

  23. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:29 am #

Hey Julia, bring that frying pan. I’ll use a mop AND I’ll tie one arm behind my back AND wear only one shoe — a high heel. That MIGHT make it even.

Seriously, I’m pretty good at swatting balls. Really good. Like almost pro-fessional. Makes up for all the talent I lack in the singing/dancing/piano/grace/talent departments.

And Andrea, sounds like you had a horrible music teacher! My son had a horrible music teacher. It was all about control. She didn’t teach, but spent all of her energy screaming “LOUDER!”, as if volume would drown out the fact she didn’t know harmony from homily. I still shudder when I think of sitting through those performances. Everyone looked as if they were sitting on tacks, especially the kids.

  24. KMB25 on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:33 am #

ladydawgfan…I bet I could have you reading music in no time! We just have to get you back to the basic building blocks…it’s actually a lot like reading a book.

Gannon, I saw Lord of the Dance when it was here in Nashville a few years ago and I was so disappointed. It was awful! The dancing didn’t sync up with the recorded sound they had and I was so disappointed that we left during Intermission…although I hear the second half wasn’t much better anyways.

I didn’t get a chance to see Riverdance when it was just here as I didn’t really have the $$ to do so. I am actually an adult beginner in the Irish step-dancing classes I’m in…but when I started a few years ago, I competed in a couple of different competitions…(in gaelic the word for dance competition is Feis..pronounced fesh) and I placed in the top 3 for most of my dances. Unfortunately, I hurt my foot after that and had to take a hiatus, which ended up lasting about 2 years! I’m just getting back into it now!

  25. Julia London on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:47 am #

SuzyQ, thank you! I am glad you are enjoying it.

Wait a minute, Karen…you don’t play tennis like you write, do you? As in nekkid? I could beat you otherwise. Easy. 6-love, 6-love, and with enough time over for a free lesson for you.

  26. Kasey on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:57 am #

I think I would have to go with acting/singing becasue I would have loved to been in musicals. I never had time to devote to workng on a play or musical and now I really wish I would have tried to do one. Even if it was just a mall part.

However, that tennis game is sounding kind of intersting. But really, wouldn’t it be kind of uncofortable to run around after a ball nekkid. I think more than the ball would be bouncing around.

  27. Nicole Jordan on 25 Apr 2007 at 12:03 pm #

    >> I cried my eyes out all afternoon. My sister asked what was wrong and I told her, I expected an “I told you so” but she didn’t say it ahe just asked if I wanted to go outside and play catch.

Oh, that is so sweet, Krissyv! Did you ever learn to play softball well? I sure didn’t! I was fairly athletic when I was a kid, but not in softball. I couldn’t throw very far, and my younger sis, who was really good, told me I hit like I was swinging a tennis racket.

I used to love to play tennis, pretended I was Martina or Billy Jean, and was even on the tennis team one year in high school. But I never got very good. And I think it would be great fun to see a match between Julia and KarenH!

As for singing and painting and playing and reading music — I’m a total washout, but I sure do admire people who can do it. And I took dance lessons for years but never had the fab moves to do it really well. That’s why I love to watch So You Think You Can Dance on TV.

  28. Karen Rose on 25 Apr 2007 at 12:04 pm #

You know, I was wondering the same thing about KarenH playing tennis in her birthday suit, LOL.

I would love to be graceful, like swooshing down a snow covered mountain and not being scared I’ll end up in traction. I’ve just started studying karate in the last year, but my kata is studied, not fluid. Maybe I need to stand on a pole on one foot and have Keye Luke teach me to snatch pebbles from his hand…

  29. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 12:21 pm #

Julia, don’t ‘love’ up to me. It won’t work. When we get to Nationals, we’re going head to head. Or frying pan to mop. Wait ‘n see.

Kasey, you’re right about the bouncing thing. Maybe we can convince Julia to bind things up, so no one gets hurt? Just sayin’ …

As for nekkid tennis, you know what they say — fast is one thing, but nekkid and fast is something else. Oh yeahhhhh. Read that in the bathroom at the Wal-Mart so it must be true.

Count me as one who always wanted to be able to draw. I always longed to be able to when I was younger. My mom says my complete inability is because I started out life as a left hander, then had an accident when I was four and almost lost that hand. Mucho damage done, and I’ve had to adjust to life as a rightie.

My kids, on the other hand, wish I could sing. I don’t let a little thing like tone deafness keep me from belting along!

Today, I’m pretty glad that I don’t play tennis. :-) But I’m definitely taking my camera to Nationals. I’m just sayin’…..

  36. Kasey on 25 Apr 2007 at 1:46 pm #

DB, I love the headlines. It will definately be a sold out crowd with advertising like that. Too funny!

  37. susang on 25 Apr 2007 at 1:58 pm #

I have to agree with many of you–I would love to be able to sing in tune. I love to sing in a crowd–church, etc., because then no one can hear me. Second would be dance–I couldn’t even follow along in Jazzercise. Third–that artist gene missed me too!

  38. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 2:09 pm #

db, those are going to be hot tix. Might wanna save a side table for my man, Hugh Jackman. He’s such a fan of mine and I know he won’t want to miss seeing my (ahem!) delicate figure fluttering over the court as I viciously slaughter Julia London.

Btw, Julia, m’dear, did you really call your girls ‘perky?’ Or was I drinking again?

I really gotta lay off the sauce.

Kim, next year I am going to go to the highland games no matter what. If it weren’t for the fact I have to go to stop Suzanne Enoch from watching Star Wars 24/7 while also trying to keep Julia in line, I’d be tempted to go this year. I’m DYING to see Men In Kilts!

I would like to sing again. I could hit high G with no problem and sang solo for many, many weddings……….then in 2000 a goofy surgeon accidently nicked my vocal cord and I was without a voice for 10 MONTHS. I was lucky enough to find a surgeon capable of fixing the cord so that I can talk again, but I will never sing.

Before I die, I want to dance a walz while wearing a gorgeous gown and I want the ballroom to be in Scotland and my partner to be in full regalia - kilt, sporran and all.

And I’d pay BIG money to see this nekkid tennis match. You could retire early if you sold tickets.

  41. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 2:53 pm #

Nicole, front seats will be the best in the house. Are you SURE you don’t want a couple?

And Ann, (gulp!) did you say you didn’t have a voice for TEN MONTHS?

I would die. I really would. I’m so sorry that happened to you. Must have been traumatic. But I must say that your waltz dream is EXACTLY what I want, too. Maybe your Scotsman will have a brother.

We’ll let you come to the nekkid tennis match for free, seeing as how you’ve suffered and all. (Though you might not want to sit too close to the front on Julia’s side … she’s binding her ‘girls’ and if something were to give unexpectedly … SNAP! That could be bad.)

    Still … No voice.

    Ten MONTHS.

    Sheeeeesh!

Ann, how scary not to be able to speak for so long. Of course, my family may consider that a blessing, but only if it was brief. I’m glad you found a surgeon who could repair the damage, but I’m sorry you can’t sing anymore. :(

You deserve that waltz with a handsome Scotsman all decked out in full regalia!

  44. Julia London on 25 Apr 2007 at 3:01 pm #

She’s right, Ann. Were one of these girls to go flying, you might be stunned into permanent speechlessness.

And yes, i did call them perky, Nekkid Tennis Hack. Certain bras do wonderful things.

Nicole, the trick is to get front row seats on the court sides — do NOT, and I repeat, do NOT sit BEHIND Nekkid Tennis Hack. We’d have to wheel you to the funny farm after I finished mopping the court.

  45. Sabrina Jeffries on 25 Apr 2007 at 3:03 pm #

Okay, we have GOT to do this goddess tennis match thing. I don’t know about the nekkid part, but definitely the tennis match part. Since you’re both Pocket authors, we could make Pocket sponsor it. :-)

And the wiinner gets Hugh Jackman! Or at least some guy dressed in a kilt.

  46. Suzanne Enoch on 25 Apr 2007 at 3:46 pm #

Oh, good God. Don’t encourage this, people! *g*

As for me, I was supposed to be an Olympic-caliber gymnast. I don’t know what happened, because I can’t even stand on my head.

And one day I’m going to be a feared swordswoman. Somehow.

  47. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 3:51 pm #

Heyyy, Sabrina! Mitts off Hugh! Mitts off Hugh! He’s mine, I tell you! MINE!!!!

And Julia, HACK? Pshaw. Wait until you see my lob — SMACK! My backhand — KAPOW! My over the head thingee strike — ZAPOWEE!

You’ll be all over the place in ways no wonder bra will ever be able to follow.

    Sticks and Stone
    May Break My Bones
    But Words
Are Just The Way Losers Moan

I think Pocket should sponsor it. Maybe Julia and I can lob it out for the best Beach Read placement or for extra USA Today ads. For that, I’d play using a mop while nekkid and in high heels, my tiny French apron fluttering as my bodacious ta-tas bang out “We Are The Champions!” to the sound of my sterling backhand Kapows!

Whew! The visuals are draining me. I need a nap.

  48. Ann in IL on 25 Apr 2007 at 4:04 pm #

Yes, Karen. It was Oct ‘99 - Aug 2000. I carried a referee’s whistle and trained my family members that if I called them on the phone and all they could hear was a whistle they’d better come running. Work was a challenge, but I made it. The first surgeon said I had to wait at least a year (!), the second wanted to put electric charged needles on the inside of my throat - of course I had to be AWAKE - I passed on that one……..finally a Mayo surgeon was able to fix me up and send me home the next day …BUT I had to promise not to speak more than 10 min a day for six weeks. No problem. I’m just glad I can speak again.

I’ll be looking for twin Scots hunks when I get there for my walz. I’ve always been good at sharing.

  49. Kasey on 25 Apr 2007 at 4:13 pm #

Maybe the tennis match should be held at Wimbledon and then we can go to Scotland to do some men in kilts site seeing. That would be one fun trip. We could end it with a big ball so that Ann and everyone can dance with Scottish hunks.

    ——–Kasey’s day-dreaming again. :)

  50. Karen Rose on 25 Apr 2007 at 4:18 pm #

This is all so very WRONG, ladies. Why are we offering Hugh Jackman as the PRIZE? Methinks we are quite backwards in our approach.

Why are we not fostering/encouraging/um-detaining-until-they-agree a match pitting Jackman versus Gerard Butler or that adorable Toby Stephens? I’m just sayin’.

I agree, the sheer entertainment value and blackmail opportunities of a KarenH/Julia nekkid match would be well worth the price of admission and I would most definitely be on the sidelines wearing protective goggles should one of Julia’s girls go rogue.

Still, I vote Jackman vs. Toby and the winner gets ME. Then I would share with everyone else, ’cause I’m nice that way unlike KarenH who is all like “MINE MINE MINE.”

I think this match should occur after KarenH/Julia duke it out, then KarenH will have no energy left to scrabble with the rest of us over Hugh.

Am I right, or am I right? I think I’m right.

  51. Karen Rose on 25 Apr 2007 at 4:23 pm #

    >>PS - Nicole, this is all your fault.

LOL, KarenR. Does that mean I get a commission on ticket sales? I should hope so. But I would rather have Colin Firth as the prize.

And Ann, that’s awful about your voice, not being able to speak for so long AND losing your beautiful range. That’s almost worse than never being able to sing well at all cause you know what you were once capable of. I’m so sorry. I agree, you should have box VIP seats at the Nekkid Tennis Goddess Match.

Julia, Julia, Julia. Still having those hot toddies at lunch, are we? First, Hugh Jackman is TOO good for you. He’s the Hot-Test, baby and we all know it.

Second, we are playing TENNIS, not VOLLEYBALL. Sheesh! If you can’t even keep the game straight, what’s the point? I mean, where’s the CHALLENGE for ME?

Btw, TinaLouise, I’ve always wanted to ice skate but I seem to be better at running into people than doing graceful leaps and such. Perhaps I should have taken up hockey. That’d be almost as much fun as learning to sword fight.

Speaking of ice skating, anyone here been to see Blades of Glory yet? Whaddya think? Should I go see it? Not see it?

  56. Selfish Addict on 25 Apr 2007 at 8:06 pm #

DB you have to offer tickets here first, before you go public. After all these visuals I’d be almost suicidal if I couldn’t get tickets!

I’d be happy just to carry a tune for my own personal enjoyment and while singing in church.

All you ladies do have a special talent for feeding my addiction and that’s nothing to sneeze at especially considering my extra picky taste in authors(ask Ms NJ),and stories.

  57. Selfish Addict on 25 Apr 2007 at 8:28 pm #

Speaking of writing talents,I know y’all will need to practice for this GAME. However, not too much time should be taken away from writing. I’ll be needing new books soon.LOL

  58. Brandy on 25 Apr 2007 at 9:09 pm #

A for the Tennis Match, ladies. Don’t do what I did. My Hubs tried to teach me to play tennis about 10 years ago. I’ll be honest, I sucked, but it was fun. Until I popped out my pelvic joint playing. I just thought I’d hurt my back. HA! Um, I’ve been too scared to try again.

And since I’m going to the Games and will see Kim and gannon, someone needs to make a dvd of the match! *g*

  59. KMB25 on 25 Apr 2007 at 9:40 pm #

hehe…I’m with Selfish Addict though…I go through books pretty quickly–so don’t take up too much time playing tennis!!!!

It’s going to be a GODDESS party at the games!! WOOHOO!!

I am dying to learn how to fence. Soon I have to find an instructor. It’s been a dream of mine for ages. I would also love to Ball Room Dance.

I would like to reserve my ticket for the Tennis Game of the century, DB. Please put me in the upper rows because if anything lets loose on the court it will hit me. My head is a magnet! Usually it’s balls - any kind of sport ball, but one never knows and I don’t intend to take any chances.

Goodnight Goddesses, thanks for all the laughs tonight!

  61. julia london on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:16 pm #

Hey, I need to clarify — when I call Karen H a Hack, I mean only in terms of tennis. She couldn’t hack up a book if she tried, she’s a fabulous writer, as you all know. But on a tennis court? Puh-leez. The ballboys are better than her. My grandmother is better than her.

I am jealous of all the goddesses going to the highland games! I am jealous of Nicole getting to go the horse show! I am jealous of everyone who can skate, do gymnastics, or sing!

And now, I must write something other than emails and blogs –

  62. ladydawgfan on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:31 pm #

I’m laughing hysterically at the thought of the Nekkid Goddesses Tennis Match, AKA The Woowoo Wimbledon!! Y’all be careful, now!! Were some of us here, myself included, to try something like this nekkid, we’d end up with two black eyes and busted kneecaps!!!

  63. dbrown3400 on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:39 pm #

The Goddesses are first priority on the ticket list, of course. Mssrs. Jackman, Firth, Stephens, et al, have reserved their seats and asked where they should be measured for their kilts. Since George Clooney is MINE MINE MINE, (is that enough MINES KarenH?) I have no vested interest in these gentlemen. I told them I would measure them personally knowing you would not object. Now if only the tape is adequate for the task, hmm. . .

  64. Karen Hawkins on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:41 pm #

Oh Julia, Julia. Playing nice now, are you? I think I see what’s wrong — you’re afraid.

Poor Julia. Run off and hide behind your keyboard and your flat panel computer screen. I know where you are. And when I find you, it’ll be Love-9, Love-9 all over the place.

Oh yeah, I’m a TTB (Tough Tennis Broad). Don’t be messin’ with me.

And ladydawgfan, the black eyes I got, but then I started thinking black eyes WITH busted kneecaps and I laughed myself pink. Thanks for the visual! Teehee!!!

Btw, you guys MUST get together at the Highland Games and send us a pic to post here. We should even have you guys blog about it together and share the experience. Wanna???

  65. Kasey on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:02 pm #

Donna I have no objects but I do need seats for me and Orlando Bloom, because he is MINE! And if there is any measuring to be done on him just let me know I will do it personally. Oh yeah…

  66. julia london on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:47 pm #

Well, yeah, I am being nice. Because I’m a girl — after I beat the crap out of you, I want you to still like me. Just covering all my bases, loser.

  67. gannon on 25 Apr 2007 at 11:48 pm #

    Karen,

I’m up for the blog from the Games if Brandy and Kim are. Although, I’ve never done a blog before–maybe Brandy and Kim have though. We will definitely have to meet up and get a picture so it can be posted here. Goddesses at The Highland Games–yeah, baby!

  68. MJ on 26 Apr 2007 at 9:38 am #

I’ve always wished I could write. Not multi-syllabic academicese, which I do rather too well, or concise, utilitarian businessese, which I also do well. I mean descriptive, elegant, turn-of-phrase, imagery leaping off the page, Fiction. With two fiction writers in my immediate family….both of whom are talented and driven enough to make a decent living at it…..I grew up as the ugly duckling in the flight of swans.

    I can ‘run’ my portion of the world…and can count without even using my fingers and toes, eternally disqualifying me from true literary genius within our family. I’m now reconciled to being the practical support for our creative members …and will devote myself wholly to being a really good reader. (-;

  69. KMB25 on 26 Apr 2007 at 11:44 am #

Karen, I’m also up for the blog—I bet I could get us pics with some really yummy scotsmen too….I know how you’ll drool over the pics!

And Gannon and Brandy…do you think we should have a special sign or something…so we’ll know how to find each other???

    ~Kim

MJ, it sounds as if you’re super talented yourself! And is IS great to be able to earn a living with your talent.

I can’t wait to “see” this tennis match. And to get a blog about the H Games.

Oh, and I remembered, I met my dh on a tennis court… we played mixed doubles and we’ve been together ever since. So while I’m not fab at it, it did have a big impact on my life!

DBrown, put me in section 6 please, that way if anything comes loose I have a shot at not having an eye put out. When is this being scheduled, I might have to take a day or two off from work cos I know I am going to lose my voice.

  73. Brandy on 26 Apr 2007 at 7:52 pm #

    Hmm, what type of sign?

I have a blog, but I’m sure everyone else is a better writer than I am!

  74. KMB25 on 26 Apr 2007 at 11:04 pm #

Brandy…me too…my blog is more of an online diary about my life though..but it’ll be fun to write a blog!

As far as signs go…maybe I should just tell y’all where to find me and we can meet up there…as soon as I find out more details?

Karen, he was a horrible music teacher! I didn’t like him at all. Luckily the next year we got a new choir teacher and she was wonderful. I loved her. She was such a fun, sweet lady. :) It sounds like that teacher your son had wasn’t that great either. There is more to singing than volume. lol

    Andrea

P.S. When does the tennis match begin? I would like a front row seat as well. lol

  76. gannon on 27 Apr 2007 at 12:09 am #

    Kim,

Good call about Brandy and I finding you, since you’ll be performing you should be easier to find. ;) We’ll chat more about it as the Games get closer and arrange a time. Looking forward to meeting you both!

  77. ericaleigh on 27 Apr 2007 at 12:14 am #

OMG! Did someone put something in the coffee yesterday. I have not laughed so hard in a long time. Nekkis tennis, is this going to be a new “X” games sport?

I would like to have the talent of follow through. I take up new interests all the time, but sometimes the follow through is lacking and I leave a trail of unfinished projects in my wake. Seriously though I would love to have the talent of dance, I feel like such an akward retard on the dance floor. When I go dancing with my friends I have to remember to keep my jaw off the floor as I drool over the talented dancers.

  78. ericaleigh on 27 Apr 2007 at 12:14 am #

can I add spelling to the list of talents I would like to have?

  79. Brandy on 27 Apr 2007 at 1:11 am #

Gannon, I agree, it would probably best to Find Kim! Um, someoone better draw me a map. Or at least do directions with “turn left at the fiber demonstration”, because I get lost using street maps. *g*

  80. TheNightPoet on 27 Apr 2007 at 11:00 am #

By they way, I’ll take pictures if you all want me too! hehe I have a very nice digital camera that could get some great shots. :P I’m thinking all of the goddesses are going to end up bringing their own cameras. lol It should be entertaining.
