So … whatcha readin’?
Apr 3rd 2007
Karen HawkinsOn Writing!
All goddesses are readers first and foremost. So we were wondering what delicious, delightful books were being enjoyed this very moment.
Here’s a peek at what your pert and lively goddess authors are reading!
Karen Hawkins is re-reading one of her favorites, Rachel Gibson’s I’M IN NO MOOD FOR LOVE. “What’s in your kinky sex room, Clare?” he persisted. “Whips, chains, swings, slings, latex body suit?”
Suzanne Enoch is wading through a research book that, as she puts it, is sometimes ‘really icky,’ called SCURVY by Stephen R. Bown. “A warship preparing for sea was a hive of chaotic activity. All hands scuttled about the dock and deck, hauling on rough hemp ropes and hoisting provisions and stores across the crack of water that separated the ship from the provisioning barge.”
Karen Rose has been losing sleep over Brenda Novak’s DEAD GIVEAWAY. “They didn’t mean to kill him. That shouldn’t have mattered.”
Julia London is neck deep in Phillipa Gregory’s THE BOLEYN INHERITANCE. It is no small thing, this, for a woman: freedom.
Claudia Dain is taking copious notes on a research tome entitled CITY OF LAUGHTER: SEX AND SATIRE IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LONDON by the Vic Gatrell. “Likewise, the first print to appear on the Prince of Wales’s secret marriage to Mrs. Fitzherbert sold so well that Fores’s printshop was crowded with the servants of the beau monde, for several days, demanding impressions faster than they could be printed.’”
Nicole Jordan is savoring Carla Kelly’s BEAU CRUSOE. “As he stood there, she had the distinct impression of Trevenen’s capability. He looked like a man who could do anything, say anything, perhaps be anything.”
Rachel Gibson is almost finished reading Laura Lee Guhrke’s AND THEN HE KISSED HER. “Whenever Harrison Robert Marlowe entered a room where women were present, there was always an inordinate amount of feminine fluttering, hair-patting and sighing.”
And Sabrina Jeffries is reading THIRD CULTURE KIDS by David Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken. How can it hurt so much to leave a country that isn’t even mine?
So . . . what are YOU reading? Would you recommend it? What have you enjoyed about this book so far?

I’m reading Suzanne Enoch’s Something Sinful. It’s a GREAT book! I love the way the hero falls for the heroine as soon as he sees her. Here’s a little from the book …
Unable to resist, he brushed a finger along the beading at the shoulder of her gown. He could swear he scented cinnamon in the air around her.
Probably the best Suzanne Enoch has ever written!

I’m reading Seducing the Spy by Celeste Bradley right now and it is excellent - as is almost anything that she writes. She is on m autobuy list for certain. She makes it so easy to slip into another world while curled up on your couch.

I’ve been re-reading Gaelen Foley so that when I got the lastest in the mail (Her Only Desire) and read it yesterday- YEAH! -I’d be up to par on everthing in the Knight series.
“You think I’m going to let some arrogant marquess stand in my way? I promise you, my father raised me better than that.” -Georgiana Knight

That Guhrke book will ruin for others for a while. LOVED IT! I just picked up that Rachel Gibson book last week and now I’m really looking forward to it. I’m reading To Catch An Heiress by Julia Quinn. Here’s a little bit:
He was dressed completely in black from his head to his boots - even his hair was black. He was tall, and his shoulders were broad, and he was quite the most dangerous looking man Caroline had ever seen.
And he had a gun pointed straight at her heart.

Funny you should ask . . . I am currently re-reading Suzie E’s “Lessons in Love” series. Right now, I am in the middle of “London’s Perfect Scoundrel.”
This series is one of my favorites to read, which is why I am re-reading it. I love the humor, the characters, and the witty repartee, all of which seem to be staples of Suzie’s books. HIGHLY recommended, BTW!!
Karen Hawkins on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:58 am #
I’m going to have to start digging through my TBR pile. I haven’t read two of those, but I know I have them.
Maybe I should schedule a few hours of hot bath time and read one of them this evening. I think I might need to do that!
Julia London on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:59 am #
I am also reading Dee Davis’ A Match Made on Madison. She usually writes romantic suspense, but this is a book about a matchmaker in New York. Its great fun — I highly recommend it.

After a dry spell, I managed to read *two* books this week. (Whoo!) Oddly, both were open-ended series vampire paranormals, which isn’t typically what I choose to read (and may be why I procrastinated buying both books.) However, both were good, but for totally different reasons.
I’m not typically a chick lit person, but Undead and Unwed by Mary Janice Davidson turned out to be both fun and funny. If you’re looking for a light, entertaining read, that’s a good choice.
I’d been wanting to read The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason for months and finally got a chance last night. Buffy meets Regency England, as promised, and I fell in love with the “bad” guy from the moment he walked on stage. I love bad boys who like being bad, and I love falling in love with heroes (and anti-heroes!)
After reading this post, though, I’m gonna have to go check out I’m In No Mood For Love. I wanna know what’s in the kinky sex room, too!!!

I’m reading HOW TO SEDUCE A DUKE by Kathryn Caskie. I’m loving this book! Great opening scene that was hilarious. I am already hooked on this series and can’t wait to read more about the Royle sisters.
BTW, I also loved AND THEN HE KISSED HER, which I had finished recently.
KMB25 on 03 Apr 2007 at 10:10 am #
I’ve just started Karen Rose’s HAVE YOU SEEN HER. I love this blog as it’s introduced so many new authors to me! (and the hubby bought the books for me…so I got NOTHING TO FEAR at the same time!) I love date nights that end up in the book store!!
Brenda Novak on 03 Apr 2007 at 10:27 am #
I’m currently reading LAND’S END by Marta Perry, and I’m really enjoying it. I’d never read an inspirational before, so I picked up a few to see what they’re all about. This one is much better than the others I’ve tried. I like it a lot!
By the way, there will be many, many autographed books in my upcoming on-line auction for diabetes research. (Adrienne, Celeste Bradley has donated a fun basket along with some autographed books!)

I am between books at the moment. (Oh, the horror!) I just finished Karen Rose’s DON’T TELL and am looking forward to the rest of those connected books. Next in line is Allison Brennan’s SEE NO EVIL.
Karen Hawkins on 03 Apr 2007 at 10:36 am #
Brenda — thanks for stopping by! We’ll have to check out your auction. That’s a great cause. When does it close? I always bid in the last few minutes. It’s almost like being at the races!
It looks like people are either on a Suzanne Enoch glom or a romantic suspense kick. I’m digging this!
Btw, the next book I’m going to read is a new to me author, Elizabeth Hoyt’s THE RAVEN PRINCE. Anyone read that one?
Karen Rose on 03 Apr 2007 at 10:50 am #
Grins to Jackie and KMB - hope you like the books.
And welcome to Brenda! I was reading her DEAD GIVEAWAY which is preceded by DEAD SILENCE. I highly recommend them both.
KarenH - I also have Raven Prince on my TBR pile. This book has had an amazing debut and Elizabeth is so charming! She’s a fellow Warner author and I got to meet her last summer.
Next up for me - I have to finish my audio of Michael Connelly’s THE LINCOLN LAWYER (which means more hours on the ellipical!), then I have lots of goddess books. I’m flying from FL to CA tomorrow and will take tons of books with me in my carryon, the memory of my last airport experience still fresh in my mind. If I get stuck somewhere, I want a romance to read!
Suzanne Enoch on 03 Apr 2007 at 11:06 am #
Mary D & Ladydawgfan, cool! I’m glad you’re enjoying the books! I can’t read romances while I’m writing one, so my TBR pile is about 3 feet high. This has been a busy year. *g*

I’m reading Danelle Harmon’s de Montefort Brothers series. I recently finished The Wild One and am near the end of The Beloved One. I may switch gears a bit and read some of this month’s new releases before continuing with the series. But I’m really enjoying these two books because I have found the storyline to be very unique (well, at least to me
) In the first book, the heroine has given birth to the hero’s brother’s bastard. In the second book, the hero finds himself falling in love with the heroine, but he is betrothed to another. I love books that have lots of sexual tension, and when the h/h’s minds tell them one thing, but their hearts say another.

I am re-reading Kinley MacGregor’s “Taming the Scotsman.” It’s the third MacAllister novel and her newsletter stated the forth is done and the excerpt is up. WOO HOO!! I’ve been waiting impatiently. LOL.
I just finished re-reading (I’m doing a lot of that lately…hmmm) Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series….only to discover a box of my books is missing from our move. I’m not pleased and am frantically searching. Her latest “Dark Fever” is in that box. prior to that I re-read Pamela Clare’s “Ride the Fire” a personal favorite that I re-read every few months.
I need to go shopping for some new books. LOL
foreverdelayed on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:24 pm #
I am just about to finish “Maggie Needs an Alibi” by Kasey Michaels. I am really enjoying it so far. I have laughed out loud at least a dozen time.
I have such a huge TBR pile that I am not sure what will be next. Working in a used bookstore is dangerous.
Kasey on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:29 pm #
I just finished The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt the other night and now I am half way through The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman.
I loved The Raven Prince and am excited for her Hoyt’s second book The Leopard Prince whcih I think comes out today. I might have to stop by the bookstore on the way home and pick that one up.
The Golden Compass is a fantasy novel and will be a movie this Christams with Nicole Kidman. The books is really good so far with a young girl heroine helping to save kidnapped children.
KMB25 on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:38 pm #
Some books that I absolutely loved that aren’t exactly romances were by Cecelia Ahern–I believe she’s the daughter of Ireland’s Prime Minister. I’ve read two of her books–the first was LOVE, ROSIE and the second one was PS, I LOVE YOU…they were fantastic, but I would recommend having a box of tissues handy..especially with the second book.
I’m also a big fan of Hannah Howell…I love her highland series!!

It was the first weekend in a looong time that I didn’t have to go out of town or have scheduled events. My dh was out of the house before I got up on Saturday, so I dove into my TBR.
I love everything Egyptian, so grabbed Night Life and began with that. It is about an Egyptian pharoah who comes back to life and is settled in Las Vegas, is fabulously wealthy and owns a casino. He meets his dream woman, there are others from the past who try to get in the way of the HEA, and are, of course, vanquished. It was a fun, fast read, but won’t make my DIK list. A little light for me.
Simply Magic was up next–okay but not going to make my DIK list either. Maybe the characters were too nice. That could be it.
Then I read Claiming the Courtesan. WOW. It may be my favorite book this year (so far anyway). Talk about tortured heroes and heroines. These are not generally my favorite, but this author did it right. It will be interesting to hear what others think of this book.
I moved on to And Then He Kissed Her–another fun, fast read, but it didn’t engage my emotions at all. Too much restraint perhaps!
So I pulled out a DIK, and reread a few sections of Slightly Married, a favorite Balogh. I do love this book.
I am now reading Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh and wish I had started it yesterday, since I got hooked right away when I began it this morning at breakfast. Will have to see if it lives up to the first few chapters. Could be another WOW.
dbrown3400 on 03 Apr 2007 at 1:02 pm #
I turned in my reviews for Romantic Times on four books I “had” to read over the weekend and was just informed that one of them will be a Top Pick. This seldom happens on small press books but the book was fantastic. If you are fans of historic fiction, The Rose of York: Fall from Grace by Sandra Worth, the final book in a trilogy about Richard III, is time well-spent.
Personally, I’m getting ready for new releases like many of you and am reading Leslie LaFoy’s The Rogue’s Bride. Both the hero and heroine are irreverant and I like them. I have so many books on one-click pre-order at Amazon that I’ve lost track. That feature is the spawn of the devil.
Karen R - I loved Connelly’s Lawyer and am looking forward to the next Bosch, The Overlook. Suzanne, I had finished Lady Rogue before I started my reviews, hoping to read straight through, when I realized I was missing the two books that cost three million dollars before I could do that.
Luckily I can read about a book a day now that I have all the time I was looking forward to back in the day when I was commuting to Manhattan and working sixteen hour days. Hopefully I can do all my rereading before everyone’s new releases come out.

I haven’t had time to read in the past couple of days, but Night Life by Elizabeth Guest (aka Suzanne Simmons) is next up on my TBR stack (it’s only about 3 books high). Glad to hear that it’s a good read!
KMB25 on 03 Apr 2007 at 1:44 pm #
Susan G—I read Simply Magic and really like it–so much that I bought Simply Love as soon as it was out in paperback and have to admit, while a nice story…I was a bit disappointed. I really like Mary Balogh though and loved the Bedwyn series of books!

I just finished reading CAUSING HAVOC by LORI FOSTER and LISA KLEYPAS’s SUGAR DADDY both were wonderfull. If your looking for some with high emmotions then pick SUGAR DADDY it’s very charged and Lori’s book was a nice and well rounded light hearted read!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Reading,

KMB25, I love Cecelia Ahern’s books. PS I LOVE YOU was wonderful! I have read IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW also by her and it was great too. I usually don’t cry when I read books but I was crying through PS I LOVE YOU. So good. I definetly recommend anything she writes.
Right now I’m reading BEDDING THE HEIRESS by Cathy Maxwell. I am almost done with it and I love it. Next I think I might dig into OH DANNY BOY by Rhys Bowen.

I’ve been reading the two newest Victoria Alexander ones. I wasn’t in love with the first one, A Little Bit Wicked, but I’m looooooving the second one, What a Lady Wants.

I am reading A Taste Of Innocence by Stephanie Laurens wow what a steamy book I have loved all of her books and they are defiently keepers. I finished How to Abduct a Highland Lord a couple of weeks ago and Karen I loved it can’t wait till the next one.
Have Fun

I just read Sabrina Jeffries’ In the Prince’s Bed and To Pleasure a Prince. I read the third book in the trilogy a long time ago. All were excellent, but To Pleasure a Prince was my favorite of the three. The heroine has a learning disability - something that I’ve never before seen in an historical, and I loved watching her learn to overcome it.
I also just read Marianne Stillings’ Arousing Suspicions - very hot and very funny!
And Then He Kissed Her - not my favorite book of hers, but still very enjoyable and beautifully written.
Next up: Sugar Daddy
(I knew I could finish my WIP if I just gave myself the right incentive… A new Lisa Kleypas book worked like a charm!)
Susan K on 03 Apr 2007 at 3:59 pm #
I just finished reading How To Abduct A Highland Lord. Loved it, Karen! Although I sometimes I wish I could have smacked the hero upside the head. Men!
Keri - I’m rereading Gaelen Foley too! I picked up her newest at the bookstore on Sunday and since it’s been so long since I’ve read them all I decided to start at the beginning. I started book one, The Duke, yesterday and am almost finished with it.

I should have said that I’m also reading two romances. One is a romantica called Pink Ice, by Susanna Carr. The guys are hot, and the sexual tension is unbelievable!
Also just started Match Me If You Can (yes, I’m one of those people who has books in every room of the house). I swear, all I have to do is read two lines of any book by SEP, and I’m hooked. She is one of my favorite authors, and once again I am reminded why.
The Third Culture Kids book is very interesting if any of you have ever been raised overseas (whether as a military brat, missionary’s kid, child of someone working overseas for a U.S. corporation) or if any of you have emigrated to another country at a young age, but were still raised in the culture of your parents. It addresses an amazing number of the effects of being raised in another culture (I was raised a missionary’s kid in Thailand). I feel like buying copies for all my siblings and friends raised abroad!

I had just finished re-reading the Mary Balogh “Slightly” series, moved to the “Simplys” and am now trying to gather in some of her back list books, once upon a time I had them all but second husband didn’t like for me to read and well, I don’t know if he gave them away or threw them away but they were all gone when I got home from work one day. I didn’t even attempt to replace them until recently. Now they are coming in slowly and I am reading as I get them. I am reading Irresistible right now. Continued…..

I am waiting on all The Goddesses new releases, semi-patiently….. LOL I loved How to Abduct a Highland Lord Karen, on pins and needles waiting for the next one.

I just finished a couple of books. Close Encounters of the sexy kind by Karen Kelley, lordy its a laugh a minute book and HOT. Also Lucy Monroe’s Satisfaction Guaranteed very sexy, I love her books.
Just finished today, Joann Ross’s No Safe Place. She really can write those hot and sexy Cacun men…. WOW
Karen Hawkins on 03 Apr 2007 at 6:20 pm #
(scribbling madly) I’m going to have to get myself to the bookstore. Poor me!
I sort of rotate between an historical and a contemporary, over and over. Not every time, but a lot of times. Anyone else do that?
Stacy S on 03 Apr 2007 at 6:41 pm #
Just started Target by Stella Cameron. I love her books. Also read Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas, it was very good. Have recently read Victoria Alexander’s A Little Bit Wicked ( didn’t really like this one) and What A Lady Wants was great. And I’m waiting for the new releases from the Julia, Suzanne and Sabrina. Oh, Cathy Maxwell’s Bedding the Heiress was great.
Ronlyn on 03 Apr 2007 at 7:00 pm #
I just started reading contemp. recently. I always avoided them before (I have no idea why) but discovered I really like them. I’ve also recently discovered Romantic Suspense (Pamela Clare’s Extreme Exposure & Hard Evidence.) Couldn’t put them down, so am on the hunt for more of those too.
but, historicals are forever my first love.

I just finished The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell by Samantha James (have plenty of tissue on hand when you read this one!) and I am now reading Bedding the Heiress by Cathy Maxwell. I am waiting for Revenge of the Scot to come out.
MizMacgyver on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:01 pm #
Stacy S, I just got Bedding the Heiress this evening, I was hoping it was going to be good. I was looking for “And Then He Kissed Her” and I couldn’t find it!!
Yes Karen, I do that, not like every other one (especially if I am in a series) but I get satiated with the historicals and switch, then switch back. I am like Ronlyn, I think I will always favor the historicals. And also like Ronlyn I liked Moning’s Highlander series. Time travel, sometimes I think I was born in the wrong time.
KMB25 on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:07 pm #
Sabrina, I think I read the MATCH ME IF YOU CAN–it was hilarious!! I think that’s the second book in a series…I haven’t had a chance to read the first one yet, but the second one rocked!
I actually just finished yesterday Karen Hawkin’s HOW TO ABDUCT A HIGHLAND LORD and it was fabulous!! so much that I’m soooo impatient for the next one to come out!
Filmphan–I haven’t read Cecelia Ahern’s third book yet, but that’s on my list of things to read!
Judy on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:56 pm #
I’ve just finished up Lori Foster’s “Say No To Joe?” which was needless to say sizzling….
Up on my to read list: I need to finish “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” for school, and possibly start with Rachel Gibson’s “See Jane Score”, I’m new to Rachel’s writing, but I’ve heard so many good things of her books, I’ve decided to try it…And then if I have time before my spring break ends, I’ll hopefully start and finish up Christina Dodd’s “A Scandalous Evening”.
For recommendations, “And Then He Kissed Her”, I agree, will probably ruin good historical romance for awhile…I think it’s her best one yet. And of course JR Ward’s “Lover Revealed” if you haven’t read it, I suggest a bookstore visitation at breakneck speed! That’s prettymuch all the recommendations I have…I’ve been trying to catch up to all the backlists of the authors I’ve discovered…soo many books, soo little time…

For approx. 2 weeks I haven’t had time to read @ all. I’m very depressed over it. I have ‘Her Master & Commander” sitting here, beside me this minute, calling to me. I have also been reading 1776 by David McCullough, which is an excellent, very interesting book. Though, I haven’t been able to read it either for the last couple weeks!
The month before my undeserved & unexpected reading drought, I read: Beware A Scots Revenge & The Swanlea Spinster Series (Sabrina Jeffries) and How to Abduct A Highland Lord (KH). I loved them all, definetly re-read books for me that I will enjoy over and over again! I also re-read The Sherbrook Bride Series by Catherine Coulter & the Lavinia Lake Trio and Deception by Amanda Quick. I almost forgot, I read the CS Lewis Narnia Series. I read a lot, so I guess I shouldn’t complain when I have a short time period when I don’t have any time to read.
I don’t have a to be read pile though, I’ve read every book in my house (except the 2 I’m reading), but I have a very long list of to be bought books. Since the Goddess Blogs I’ve been introduced to many other goddess authors and I’m excited about collecting all their books too. I only read Historicals, but who knows, maybe I’ll try something new, eventually.

I am currently reading Hawk’s Prize by Elaine Barbieri. It’s the fourth book in the Hawk series and Elaine is the co-author of the series. Her and Constance O’Banyon wrote two books a piece for the series. Constance wrote the first and third books in the series. Elaine wrote the second and fourth book. It’s a great series. I love it!
I would definitely recommend this book and the series to all of you. It’s great! If any of you are interested, the first book in the series is Hawk’s Pledge by Constance O’Banyon. I love the male lead in this book. I loved the male leads in all the other books in this series, but for some reason, I have taken a strong liking to the male lead in Hawk’s Prize. He’s mine! haha The plot line in this fourth book is even better too. It’s the conclusion of the series, so everything is coming to the climax of the series and I can’t seem to put the book down! Even though I know I should, considering I have two tests next week that I need to study for. hehe I’m so bad.

I just finished INNOCENT IN DEATH by J.D. Robb–la Nora never disappoints and I love this series. Eve and Roarke are wonderful characters!
I have a huge TBR stack of books waiting. I’m really looking forward to reading SUGAR DADDY and it looks like I’ll be adding to my list with some of the books everyone has mentioned.
Judy, I concur about JR Ward’s LOVER REVEALED–it was fabulous. Another great series with some very hot vampires!
Karen Hawkins on 04 Apr 2007 at 8:11 am #
You know, I never used to think of vampires as ‘hot’ but now … my, how perceptions have changed! It’s cool how the romance industry has changed over the last few years and really allowed some hugely creative paranormals lines to grow. I’m diggin’ it, but then I always wanted to be Samantha on Bewitched. Oh, the things I’d wiggle my nose at!
You guys are awesome, eclectic and voracious goddess readers! I now have ELEVEN new books on my To Be Bought list. Can’t wait to go to the bookstore on Saturday!!!

hehe I love vampire books! They are great! The vampires are hot, sexy and mysterious enough to make you crave to have them look your way. I can’t get enough of them.
Gannon, I think I have JRWard’s book on my list of books to buy. lol I’m glad to hear that it’s great. I’ll have to get it sometime soon. Though I have two books I just recently bought that need to be read before I even buy anymore books. lol

I am listening to Remember When by J.D. Robb on Audio in my car - I absolutely love Nora Roberts and this series has been wonderful. Eve and Roarke make my commute!!
I am reading Ain’t She Sweet by SEP. I love her!! Next up is Match Me If You Can from her Chicago Stars series.
Like others, I have books in every room and so I am also reading Can’t Wait to Get to Heave by Fannie Flagg. It’s awesome!
I agree with the others that Cecelia Ahern is great and I look forward to more books from her. I have a huge TBR pile of many, many authors. I love to read! Thanks for the blog that introduces me to even more wonderful authors.

Pamela, I just bought AIN’T SHE SWEET by SEP yesterday! Somehow I missed that one.
As for Fannie Flagg, I loooove her writing! I think one of the best books I ever read was FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE. Excellent book, better even than the movie. She’s just funny and poignant and I’m in awe.
Ah, so many books. So little time. What to do? What to do?
