My Favorite Goddess

carly-author-photo-leopard-300dpi.jpgcrossmyheart_frontcvr.jpgWhen the Goddesses asked me to blog, I was so excited I was sure you could hear me screaming around the block. I mean seriously. Look at these ladies. If their Goddess poses aren’t enough to get excited about, then there’s WHO they are.  Let me see.  There’s Rachel Gibson who I’ve been addicted to since forever, Nicole Jordan who I read and love, Julia London and Karen Rose who were my Levy Bus Tour Buddies, Karen Hawkins whose author photo I have been jealous of since the day I first saw it, Sabrina Jeffries who helped me when I did the WRW Retreat speech, Suzanne Enoch who I’m happy to meet here, and Claudia Dain who dragged me kicking and screaming into the PAN workshop world. Talented ladies, all of them and they want ME to blog. They’re Goddesses and I’m a Plotmonkey (www.plotmonkeys.com) Wow. No pressure or anything. So I decided to go with the blog theme. GODDESSES.

As writers, when asked about the best part of our job, we say rolling out of bed and going to work in pajamas or sweats.  I think we’ve all admitted to that at least once. But not a Goddess.  A Goddess doesn’t roll out of bed and stay in sweats.  A Goddess is perfection personified day in and day out. A Goddess has creamy skin and perfect hair (no frizz) and perky boobs and a small waist.

As romance writers, we don’t write about true Goddesses because part of the way to endear characters to our readers is by making them real and real people are flawed or at least they have insecurities.  And yet when we create our heroines, we envision perfect, beautiful people to go with our gorgeous heroes.

Here are the Goddesses (Hollywood style) that I’d pick as perfect. I’m only going to choose three, so I don’t have to ask the Goddesses to upload too many pictures.  But here we go.

sydneybristow.jpgSydney Bristow -  I’m an Alias fanatic still in withdrawal. Boy do I wish I could be Syd for a day … those expressive eyes, those MOVES!  sydandvaughn.jpg Okay, okay, I admit Michael Vartan as Agent Vaughn is a big part of the reason. <g> But seriously, Jennifer Garner’s my favorite actress in whatever she’s in.

.

izzy.jpg

Izzy Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy– just beautiful and angelic looking.  (Okay, okay, so Denney Duquette has a lot to do with wanting to be HER for a day.  A day when Denny was still alive, mind you <g>) I think that Katherine Heigl is just beauty personified.

carly.jpgCarly Corinthos on General Hospital – Ever see Carly cry? She does it often and she never once looks bad doing it. Add to that, she has her choice of Sonny or Jax. Rough life! And the actress who plays her,  Laura Wright stepped into a role created by one actress and that another one made her own, and dominated it from day one.  Plus that mane of gorgeous hair I’d take any day of the week.

I’m sensing a theme here – the Goddesses I would want to be for a day aren’t real people but TV or movie characters although their alter egos are pretty awesome themselves – and the reasons I chose each of them mostly all come back to the men in said character’s life.

Does that say something purely shallow about me?

So who are your favorite Goddesses – and why?

Hi Carly! It’s such a pleasure to have you on the Mount today!

Well, now I’ve had the privilege of time to consider this question as I’m the Guest Goddess Greeter and get to put up all the guest blogs, which means I get to read them in advance.

I think choosing a fave goddess based on her man is legitimite. I think there are lots of women out there who’d love to be me because of my husband. He’s kind, sweet, supportive and good. He makes me laugh and makes me coffee. He does dishes

  2. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 6:17 am #

and does laundry and he’s a good dad. He completes me.

So my favorite goddess? I guess on the man criteria, it has to be ME, lol.

On the criteria of beauty and poise - Mariska Hargitay. She plays Olivia on Law & Order SVU. She also heads a non-profit org to help victims of violent crime heal. My hat is off to her!

  3. SuzyQ on 30 Mar 2007 at 7:33 am #

Arrr! Since I’d love to be a pirate for a day, I’d have to say my Goddess of choice would be Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Who wouldn’t love to frolic around the seas with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom?

  4. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 7:38 am #

Orlando YES. But as Legolas. He was so PRETTY as Legolas.

How about Julia Ormond in FIRST KNIGHT? She had her choice of Richard Gere and Sean Connery. Or even Ben Cross in his dark, brooding, malevolent-ness.

  5. Kelly Ann on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:24 am #

I would have wanted to be Maureen O’hara (so I could play guns with John Wayne) or Doris Day (so I could pillow talk with Rock Hudson)! Oh my, oh my! I drool at the thought!

I love Karen Rose’s answer on remaining her own goddess self. Of coarse, not all of us have men that will do dishes! I’m so jealous! I did threaten not to do anymore the other day! If one more person sets a dirty dish in my sink, I will not be responsible for my actions!

  6. Kelly Ann on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:25 am #

The water is right there - rinse and stack, rinse and stack!!!!

    I’m a broken record!

  7. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:34 am #

Ooh listen to you, Karen! A good man is hard to find. I have one too (if you don’t count the does laundry and cooks stuff). I thought about Mariska Hargitay AFTER I sent you my blog. I adore her.

Suzy, Kiera Knightley is gorgeous … I can see it.

I have to go check out Julia Ormond. Not sure I know who that is (ducking!)

Kelly Ann, wow. We’re going back … that’s so cool. Good idea!

  8. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:36 am #

I had so many more ideas after I sent in the blog and not just because of the guys women are with. Some women I’d love to have their hair for a day. Just one good hair day, come on, that’s not too much to ask. Face … that’s also a goodie. Gorgeous women. Not a bad thing to be. But I like Karen’s criteria. She looked inside … Mariska’s foundation work. Apparently Karen is less shallow than I am. (haha!)

  9. Keri Ford on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:37 am #

The Scorpion King girl (Kelly Hu). Not only because she is gorgeous and smart, but she transforms the tortured hero (Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson). He’s such a beastly thing until she walks on the scene and we’re gifted with a charming man inside that tough exterior!

    http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0277296/RKCVLG_RK-K122-13.jpg.html

  10. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:39 am #

Ooh Kelly Hu is GORGEOUS. Yes, yes, a true Goddess!

  11. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:42 am #

Hey Carly! Less shallow? Nope. The man brings me coffee when I’m writing and makes me food and buys me CHOCOLATE. In my book, that trumps nearly everything else.

Julia Ormond - think Sabrina and Harrison Ford! She is absolutely gorgeous! And if you haven’t seen First Knight - well there is this scene when Guinevere (sp?) and Lancelot really want each other and gaze longingly across the room, knowing they shouldn’t. Sexual tension is off the scale.

  12. SuzyQ on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:43 am #

Oh, and before Karen H. responds, I’d like to be any Goddess that plays opposite Hugh Jackman! :)

  13. SuzyQ on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:49 am #

OK, now I’m going to have to go out and rent First Knight.

Karen, we both are lucky to be treated like Goddesses from our own husbands. Mine recently was in Switzerland and Germany and brought me back 3 large boxes of chocolates - yummy!!! He not only helps with the dishes but laundry as well! I am sooooo lucky to have him!

  14. Kasey on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:07 am #

Oh I like the idea of being Kiera Knightly with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. Sailing the Seas and looking for treasure. I also liked her in the Pride and Prejudice movie.

However, I would also like to be Drew Barrymore. I loved her and the guys she played opposite of in Ever After, Never Been Kissed, 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer and she was one kick butt girl in the Charlie’s Angels movies. I haven’t seen Music & Lyrics yet but she is playing opposite of Hugh Grant in that one.

  15. KMB25 on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:11 am #

Karen and SuzyQ–Count me in into the lucky husband category! Mine cooks AND cleans (although usually we’re both so busy that gets put off awhile!) The cooking thing though is a blessing, especially after a long day! And then there’s the CHOCOLATE….mmm….

My favorite Goddess?? The woman who plays Dr. Temperence Brennan on Bones….she’s a genius, beautiful, and while she’s got some issues (who doesn’t?) she gets to work with David Boreanaz!!! He’s gorgeous!!

    ~Kim

  16. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:11 am #

Oh, Kasey, since Michael Vartan was in Never Been Kissed, I’m with you there. And I loved loved loved Music and Lyrics. Did a blog on that one over at plotmonkeys. Hugh Grant was wonderful. Don’t miss it! Drew’s a Goddess.

  17. Julia London on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:17 am #

I’m going to go with the Working Class Goddess, as personified in Pam Beesley on The Office (it helps that I watched the marathon last night). But seriously, I love her. She takes everything in stride in her awful job and still manages to have fun. I would not be as easy to get along with if I had her job. Or office mates.

A couple of others come to mind: Mary Tyler Moore back in the day, Rhoda, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl who finally gets the corner office. I wanted to be them.

  18. Julia London on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:17 am #

And Carly, its such a thrill to see you here! Thank you so much for being our Guest Goddess–which of course implies you are goddess all the time. :-)

  19. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:20 am #

Melanie in Working Girl saying with Marilyn breathiness: “I have a head for busines and a bod for sin.” Who wouldn’t want to be her? AND she got a love scene with Harrison Ford. Sighhh. I’m there.

  20. FeyRhi on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:22 am #

My favourite would have to be Laura Croft. She’s smart, tough, gorgeous, saves the world, and never has to worry about bills, laundry or dishes. What could be better then that. *G*

  21. Kasey on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:24 am #

Thanks Carly. I also loved Michael Vartan in Never Been Kissed. Music & Lyrics is definately on my must see list but I don’t make it to the theater much anymore so I will probably just buy it when it comes out on DVD. I have a habit of doing that lately.

  22. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 9:25 am #

Thank you, Julia. I like being an honorary Goddess …

Everyone’s personal Goddess ideas are so much fun.

I have to run out for a bit but I’ll be checking back later!

  23. Leslie Kelly on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:04 am #

Hmm…they’re goddesses. We’re monkeys. THANKS so much for pointing that out, Carly.

I think using Karen’s criteria, I am the goddess extraordinaire, too, based on how wonderful my husband is.

Otherwise…hmm…I’d like to be Catherine Zega Jones–without Michael Douglas–I mean, the body on the woman in that movie with Sean Connery where she was the thief? Oy vei… Or making out with Antonio as Zorro? Oh my. Or singing in a Broadway-musical turned movie? Heaven.

  24. ashefrog on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:13 am #

I would have to say Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, they both played and lived as modern women. They were both beautiful, smart, cheeky and brought women closer to being recognized as equals to men.

Kelly Ann - I had Maureen O’Hara but you beat me to it. I love her. McLintock is an all time fav, I even havea copy of it cause I got tired of waiting for it to come on TV.
She is beautiful, sassy and was the Duke’s match in everyway. Oh and that red hair was to die for.

  25. Emily on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:18 am #

I’m gonna have to go with a cartoon here. Pocahontas in the Disney film. I dont care that it wasnt politically correct. Dang, I WANT a talking tree and a sexy beast named John Smith. Oh and dont get me talking on hurry cute furry friends.

BUT, if were going REAL people (though Pocahontas was real) I’m going with Avangaline Lilly (SP?) LOVE her look. She is very sexy and GREAT HAIR!! Hate mine, love hers. I’d trade bodies for life with her.

  26. Emily on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:19 am #

Opps, meant HER cute furry friends.

  27. SuzyQ on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:19 am #

Oh Leslie, I agree on Catherine Zeta-Jones, especially the Zorro part. Mmmm Antonio! BTW, the movie with Sean Connery was Entrapment.

  28. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:31 am #

I remember being on a plane when Entrapment was shown. I was working and not watching the movie (okay, I’d peek at Sean from time to time). But when that scene came on where Catherine Z-J does that crab-walk slither under the ropes (or lasers?), every man on the plane was riveted to the screen. They were all drooling. It was very unattractive. The drooling men, not Cath Z-J. Why oh why can’t we all have her body?

  29. Karen Rose on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:34 am #

Oh - and hello to Leslie Kelly! You’re a goddess, for sure!

  30. Julia London on 30 Mar 2007 at 11:18 am #

Leslie, I’m with you — ditch Michael Douglas and head straight for Zorro, LOL.

  31. Claudia Dain on 30 Mar 2007 at 11:22 am #

Wow, tough. So many goddesses to choose from. My husband makes me a goddess, no doubt about that, but if I were to try to reach for the next step up…is there a step up from goddess?

Must be. I want better hair than this!

So, I’d pick Maureen O’Hara (and am in good company on that!). One of my favorite movies is The Quiet Man. I just love the way she matches John Wayne jab for jab and still stays so purely feminine.

Plus, the hair. Abundant, lustrous hair. And red! Wow.

  32. anneriailin on 30 Mar 2007 at 11:34 am #

I agree with so many of the Goddesses. Kiera Knightly getting to sail the seas with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and don’t forget Jack Davenport!! Maureen O’Hara dueling it out with John Wayne. The Quiet Man is one of my all time favorite movies also. Mariska Hargitay! I love her in L&O:SVU. I have a secret crush on the Captain…shhh. I’m gonna have to add Ingrid Berman into the mix. I loved her in Casablanca. And in Notorious, she got some good canoodling time with Cary Grant. *sigh*

  33. Karen Hawkins on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:00 pm #

Welcome, Carly! What a great topic! My DH loooves Jennifer Garner, too. I need to watch Alias!

My current Goddess is Hilldegard Ferrea who, at age 99, became the oldest woman to sky dive. I saw her story in a magazine and have become an avid follower; I want to be that intrepid when I’m 99!

And, of course, I love the way Keira Knightley’s character in Pirates has become more and more of a swashbuckler herself. Huzzah and ARGH!

  34. Suzanne Enoch on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:08 pm #

At the moment, I want to be Queen Gorgo in “300″. Before King Leonidas goes off to the Hot Gates. A strong woman among strong men. And the attractive lighting, and the whole being queen thing. And the perky boobs, too.

  35. Karen Hawkins on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:17 pm #

OH, OH, OH! (jumping up and down and waving arms) Suzanne Enoch, MOVE OVER! I forgot about Queen Gorgo in 300 and the awesome lighting and the perky boobs and being with all those thigh-tastic and ab-licious men! I wanna be her, too! I wanna be her, too!

  36. terrio on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:46 pm #

You ladies are too funny. I’ll take Gerard Butler any way I can get him so if I have to be her, then I’m on the bus.

I’d love to have the body of any of those professional dancers on Dancing With The Stars. And to dance like that with Maksime……oh baby!

I think the actress I’d really like to switch with would be Sandra Bullock. She gets the best leading men, dated Matthew McCaughnahey (I never can spell that) and she’s just gorgeous. Her hubby Jesse James ain’t bad either…

  37. Brandy on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:48 pm #

I would want to be Rachel Weiss as Evie, she was smart and brave and she ended up with Brendan Frasier (Rick). Mariksa Hargitay is great, as is the choice of Maureen O’Hara, love her!

  38. Patty L. on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:49 pm #

I would love to be Jennifer Garner on Alias or off, I love Ben Affleck. I would also enjoy being Drew Barrymore, but I do not like Hugh Grant.

  39. Kasey on 30 Mar 2007 at 12:54 pm #

Oh speaking of getting Matthew McConaughey I would love to be Kate Hudsen in How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. I would love the scene where they are playing the card game Bull Shit. Not to mention Kate’s gold dress at the end of the movie is phenomenal. Of course Penelope Cruz was lucky to play in Sahara with him too.

  40. Leslie Kelly on 30 Mar 2007 at 1:49 pm #

Thanks for letting me be a goddess, too, Karen!!!

And oh, yes, I’m another huge The Quiet Man fan. We have it on DVD, and it’s one of those movies that I will *still* stop and watch if I’m flipping channels and stumble across it.

    The kiss in the rain…

    Le swoon.

  41. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 1:58 pm #

What a blast this is! Too fun. Pocahontas. Awesome choice! All of these rock.

  42. SuzyQ on 30 Mar 2007 at 2:08 pm #

Great hair Goddess? I’d have to say Julia Roberts. I wish I had a mane like that! Not to mention she’s played opposite some not-to-shabby guys.

  43. foreverdelayed on 30 Mar 2007 at 2:19 pm #

Gina Torres as Zoe from Firefly! That woman is statuesque, beautiful, strong and she can kill you with her pinky.

    In regards to Carly Corinthos.
Jax or Sonny???? Ya, if only I had those kind of choices to make in my life!

  44. terrio on 30 Mar 2007 at 2:30 pm #

    *waving frantically*

I want Jax! I want Jax!

  45. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 2:56 pm #

    I’ll take SONNY!

  46. foreverdelayed on 30 Mar 2007 at 3:04 pm #

It is a hard choice, but Jax wins by a hair.

  47. Sabrina Jeffries on 30 Mar 2007 at 3:13 pm #

LOVE First Knight and Julia Ormond. I wouldn’t mind being her, although she’s probably a bit older now. I’d really like to be Carly Simon, though (in keeping with the Carly theme). Not only do I love her music and think she looks great, too, but it would be cool to have James Taylor as a husband, even an ex.

If I did choose a young woman, it would have to be Maritska or Reese Witherspoon. Reese seems to have a great sense of humor in her roles, although who knows if she does in person.

  48. Sabrina Jeffries on 30 Mar 2007 at 3:14 pm #

Oh, and WELCOME CARLY!! We’re delighted to have you guesting! And hey, you can masquerade as a monkey all you want, but deep down we all know that you’re really a goddess.

  49. Kelly Ann on 30 Mar 2007 at 4:25 pm #

Ashefrog I own Miclontock too, one of my favorites. I also love The Quiet Man. Yes, that John Wayne was quite a man, I really should have been born back then and married him.

I did forget that I want to be the new maid Marrion (sp) on the BBC Robin Hood, because even dirty from the woods that man does something to me.

I wouldn’t mind being Audry Hepburn, she was beautiful inside and out from what I’ve read and heard.

Thank you for joining us Carly, this is a fun topic!

  50. Nicole Jordan on 30 Mar 2007 at 5:02 pm #

It’s so great to have you here, Carly! You make a great goddess yourself, lol.

And I adore Sidney and Izzy. Love Angelina and CathZ-J, too. And I don’t know if any of you saw Cassonova last winter with Heath Ledger, but the heorine (I forget her name right now, Jude Law’s ex) was wonderful, and I’m using her as my next hrn model.

Carly, I would also love to hear about CROSS MY HEART. When’s it come out? And is this the start of a new series? I know it’ll be delicious!

    Nicol

  51. Claudia Dain on 30 Mar 2007 at 7:23 pm #

    Carly, what a great topic!

But why am I suddenly sick with envy that I’m NOT Maureen O’Hara in The Quiet Man, getting grabbed by John Wayne in his adorable Irish cottage and getting kissed senseless while the wind blows against my skirt and he holds me captive while he steals a torrid kiss, my first, but I am SO a match for him…and then I slap him, but he deflects it with his massive palm…

Excuse me while I catch my breath…

I *am* a goddess, right? I don’t need red hair, right?

  52. Carly Phillips on 30 Mar 2007 at 7:29 pm #

Thanks for the warm Goddess welcome!

Cross My Heart was out in hardcover last year but I consider this year’s mass market, with it’s gorgeous new cover, the start of my new mass market push. Cross My Heart in July and Sealed with a Kiss in October are connected. It’s a woman fakes her death to get away from an abusive uncle when she was young, leaves her first true love behind, then he comes to get her to resurface to stop her uncle from claiming her trust fund ten years later.

  53. dbrown3400 on 30 Mar 2007 at 10:15 pm #

Sorry I almost missed you, Carly. All the goddesses everyone mentioned are great. One who still catches my eye is Rene Russo, especially opposite Pierce Brosnan in The Thomas Crown Affair. I’ve never seen her with a bad hair day. Carly, your new books sound really interesting. With so many goddesses I’m getting in trouble with my pre-ordering on Amazon. Please stagger your publication dates please .

    Donna

  54. Alex Richards on 31 Mar 2007 at 12:17 am #

I am SO with you about Alias. That was one of my fave shows ever and i’m still in withdrawal too! And Dr. Izzy Stevens. She’s friggin’ awesome!
    Good post.

  55. Carly Phillips on 31 Mar 2007 at 6:40 am #

Renee Russo in the Crowne Affair - I WANTED HER HAIR, LOL!!!!!!!

Thanks again for having me. Any of the Goddesses are welcome to be a monkey for the day any time. OK that sounds bad. Any of the Goddesses are welcome to be a Plotmonkey for the day anytime. I love you all.

  56. Maddy on 13 Oct 2007 at 4:06 am #

Katherine Heigl all the way - she is incredible.
