Who loves you baby?
Mar 13th 2007
RachelGOn Writing!
The discussion the other day about bad boys got me thinking about my favorite all time heroes. The more I thought about them, the more I realized that they all have one thing in common. Unrequited love. I am a huge sucker for a one-woman man who is pissed off because the one woman he wants is the one woman he can’t have. In books and in movies, these heroes suffer so much for the love of their woman, it just makes my heart melt.
And whenever I think of unrequited love, I always think of Matthew McConaugh. I just know that Matthew is suffering unrequited love for me. Really, he is. No I’ve never met Matthew, but I like to delude myself into believing that if he met me, he’d have to have me.
I also think that Colin Farrell would have to have me too, and that would start a big fight between Matthew and Colin. But what can I do?
So tell me, who are your favorite hero suffering from unrequited love, and who harbors an unrequited love for you?

George Clooney, I bet. I’m his if he wants me.
Also, Rachel, wasn’t this your theme in Truly Madly?????
ashefrog on 13 Mar 2007 at 11:37 am #
I would have to say Richard Gere - American Gigolo, An Officer and A Gentleman, Pretty Woman, First Knight, Runaway Bride just to name a few.
He keeps searching for me but alas we a like two ships passing in the night.
Suzanne Enoch on 13 Mar 2007 at 11:44 am #
OMG, I thought I was the only one being stalked by handsome, famous men. Karen Hawkins will deny this, but I think one of the men trying to hunt me down is Hugh Jackman. I KNOW that George Clooney spends his Tuesday nights outside my door, pining — he’s probably got you the rest of the week, Carly.
Oh, and MacGyver — I mean, Richard Dean Anderson. And Gerard Butler & the entire elite of the Spartan army. I wish they would mow my lawn while they’re camped out there, though.
terrio on 13 Mar 2007 at 11:49 am #
I realize he is married with two little ones now but I know deep down that Russell Crowe mourns the distance between us. It’s what keeps him so angry. He has a hard time dealing with it.
Matthew, Matthew, Matthew….I would play his bongos for him.
Keri Ford on 13 Mar 2007 at 11:51 am #
Josh Lucas (Stealth, Sweet Home Alabama) wants me bad, but nuts, I’m already married.
Like Matthew, he’s got that Southern Boy thing going, and I’ve been waiting for Hollywood to put those two in a movie as brothers!
RachelG on 13 Mar 2007 at 11:54 am #
Hey there Carly,
Yeah it was the theme in Truly. And in a book I wrote a few years ago, Daisy’s Back In Town. I’m sure I’ll write it again, too. I just love a suffering tortured hero.
And I loved Gere in Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, but I just don’t care for Julia Roberts. I don’t know why.
ashefrog on 13 Mar 2007 at 12:09 pm #
Rachel,
Julia was just standing in for me. Richard saw me everytime he looked into her eyes.
RachelG on 13 Mar 2007 at 12:09 pm #
So, that’s why Russell is so angry. Makes perfect sense to me. Unrequited love will make a man throw a cell phone and hit people in the head.
Wasn’t Sweet Home Alabama the BEST! I own the movie and watch it all the time.
Re: Matthew and his bongos. What kind of total idiot would call the cops on a naked Matthew? Sheesh. I’d camp out on his lawn.
Ronlyn on 13 Mar 2007 at 12:11 pm #
Brad Pitt. He is mearly settling for Angie with her perfect body and big lips because I was already taken.
Although, (I’m about to get mushy, prepare yourselves) my wonderful husband is really my real life hero. He takes care of me unlike anyone else, gets jealous when he catches another man looking my way and doesn’t complain about rubbing my feet. In fact, just yesterday he told me I was his Princess. *melting heart* I wouldn’t trade him in for anything.
colinfirthfan on 13 Mar 2007 at 12:18 pm #
Definitely George Clooney and Viggo Mortenson (as the scruffy Aragorn - once he cleaned up I didn’t like him as much)
Oh and Orlando Bloom (as Legolas or the role in Pirates of the Caribbean) does it for me too.
Julia London on 13 Mar 2007 at 1:08 pm #
Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility was so perfect in the unrequited love category.
I am certain Colin Firth pines for me. He probably doesn’t know my name, but he knows me. :-).
I wrote a book years ago, Ruthless Charmer, about a young woman who had an unrequited love for a guy — and the woman’s name was Claudia Dane! hahahaha….that was before I knew of THE Claudia Dain. And for those of you keeping track, Claudia Dane got her guy in the end. Natch.
colinfirthfan on 13 Mar 2007 at 1:33 pm #
*gasp* I forgot Colin Firth!!!
*hanging head in shame*

just remember too many men, too little time or is that mind LOL

I can believe that Matthew McHowYouSpellHisName is suffering from unrequited love. But it’s a “love that dare not speak its name” type of love, if you know what I mean
Sorry, too many blind items about him and his use of the public restrooms for other purposes . . . .
Julia London on 13 Mar 2007 at 2:56 pm #
I know, colinfirthfan. I was stoked I got there before you
foreverdelayed on 13 Mar 2007 at 3:35 pm #
Nathan Fillion, George Clooney, Kiefer Sutherland, David Boreanaz, Brent Spiner and Adam Baldwin. They have weekly wrestling matches with each other to prove their love for me.. Poor Brent always gets crushed!
TL Schaefer on 13 Mar 2007 at 3:37 pm #
Ahhh, for me I know, with absolute certainty, that Michael Biehn is wasting away to nothingness with longing for me…
claudia dain on 13 Mar 2007 at 3:56 pm #
Claudia Dane?!? I had no idea! Wow.
And of course “she/me” got the guy. What else?
Viggo M as Aragorn…he adores me. He only married that elf chick for political reasons, as kings must do to protect the kingdom and cement alliances. How he suffers in manly silence, wanting me across time and a few mountain ranges. Ah, Strider…
Michael Corwin in the Underworld movies has it bad for me as well. Sure, he’s part vampire, part werewolf, part immortal, which explains why he’s hanging with Kate the Vampire; she’s teaching him the ropes about the Underworld. But his heart, and his wolfish fangs, are all mine.
Karen Rose on 13 Mar 2007 at 4:28 pm #
a) my husband
Having said that …
b) Patrick Stewart from Star Trek Next Gen; yes I know he’s bald, but he’s still hot
c) Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek Next Gen
(yes, I am a geek)
d) Michael Shanks from Stargate SG-1 - Daniel Jackson is a galactic babe
(especially after the 3rd season when he bulked up. He went from cute to yummy.)
e) Colin Firth, just to get out of Space, but I won’t fight you guys for him. I’ll just post myself outside Julia’s door as he’s pining for you and look at him.
f) Hugh Laurie, ’cause he’s got gorgeous blue eyes and does the scruffy look well
g) Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs because he’s funny and looks good even covered in s#@t, which he is routinely.
Karen Rose on 13 Mar 2007 at 4:31 pm #
On second thought, of course Viggo and Brad and Orlando may also worship at my feet, but Orlando only as Legolas. He was so pretty
colinfirthfan on 13 Mar 2007 at 4:41 pm #
Ashefrog - definitely “Too many men, too little mind”
(The thought of Aragorn and Legolas must’ve done it….)
Next time Julia, I will think of Colin Firth first (unless my brain turns to mush again….)
No no Claudia - Aragorn adores ME. Mine. Min… Oh actually I’ll take Legolas(Orlando).

I think Matthew Perry does unrequited love in Studio 60 amazingly well (I guess it’s not totally unrequited, but still . . .). I really love Studio 60, and it seems destined to be cancelled. Sigh. I LOVE unrequited love. I am at this very second watching the end of Sabrina (the Harrison Ford version), and the part where he thinks he’s sending his brother off with the woman he’s fallen in love with is still so wrenching, I can hardly stand it (and yes, that’s where I got my pseudonym). It’s one of my fave romantic movies of all time, and other than it and the Star Wars trilogy, it’s the only one where I really love Harrison Ford.
But if I had to choose someone secretly pining for me, it would be Matthew MacFadyen (sorry, seton, haven’t heard what you’re talking about, but I still think he’s adorable). Or Jeremy Northam. And what has happened to HIM lately? I haven’t heard anything about him.
MizMacgyver on 13 Mar 2007 at 5:06 pm #
Wait Susan, you can have the rest but McGyver is mine…..
MizMacgyver on 13 Mar 2007 at 5:16 pm #
Gotta agree with Karen, yes he is bald but Patrick Stewart is hot and of course #1 is #1 for me too. Okay, I can see now that Karen and I must truly be sisters in spirit, at least we could watch TV together with no sibling rivalry, I love Daniel, I am not sure he loves me but I can do the one-sided thing if necessary. And of course on Stargate SG-1 (the older ones) we again have Richard Dean Anderson and he is still mine! They don’t call me MizMacgyver for nothing.
Judy F on 13 Mar 2007 at 5:55 pm #
George Clooney, Hugh Jackman. Keifer Sutherland… Yummy all around.
Oh I love Mathew too.
I am sure there are more but the brain is tired.
LucyD on 13 Mar 2007 at 6:26 pm #
Alas and alack! I think not that anyone, be he knight or knave, is pining for me.
But I do love books where the hero has loved the lady forever and has just been waiting for her to grow up, come back to town, get rid of the dweeb, etc. Unrequited is good if it becomes requited later on
lisapbailey on 13 Mar 2007 at 6:39 pm #
I’m going to have to say Tristan (not the real Brad Pitt) from Legends of the Fall has to be my favorite tortured hero on screen. I’m sure if I’d lived in Montana in the early 1900’s I could have made him forget all about Julia Ormond–or at least distracted him–but considering what happened to all the women he loved I probably wouldn’t have lived very long. Bless his poor tortured soul.
Stacy S on 13 Mar 2007 at 6:43 pm #
I think Colin Farrels waiting on me. And I adored Gabriel Byrne.
claudia dain on 13 Mar 2007 at 6:56 pm #
Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs!! How could I have forgotten him!?
He’s soooo cute and funny and purely adorable. I really should give him a go. Maybe after he takes a shower…
Suzanne Enoch on 13 Mar 2007 at 7:04 pm #
Hey, TL Schaefer, I’ll arm wrestle you for Michael Biehn! OMG, he’s been in love with me ever since “The Terminator”. *g*
And foreverdelayed, I KNEW you had to be a “Firefly/Serenity” fan. “Let’s be bad guys.” LOL
Ooo, Claudia, Michael Corwin aka Scott Speedman! How come he got even better looking when he turned gray/blue and became vampuwolfian? He totally wants to marry me. Not Claudia. Nope.
Sabrina Jeffries on 13 Mar 2007 at 7:05 pm #
Ooh, ooh, ooh, LOVE Gabriel Byrne. Where do you think I got the surname for the hero of One Night with a Prince?
Carly Phillips on 13 Mar 2007 at 7:32 pm #
Oh how did I forget? Michael Vartan is hunting me down and Mike Piazza may just leave his wife and baby for me.

I’m glad I got home from work while George Clooney still had a day open in his week. He’s not only HOT, he seems like such a great guy. Carly, I knew I’d have to battle you for Mike. I never quite understood why he left the Mets to catch for San Diego. I thought he would go directly to an AL team as a DH. I guess he just took a detour. He should have enough strength for both of us. Again, another nice guy.

Suzanne Enoch . . . put Hugh Jackman down and walk away slowly. He’s mine. He was never looking for you. It was me, Me, ME he always wanted. You were just his Pity Date. That, and since you and I room together at RWA Nationals, he thought he could get in good with me by being nice to you.
Rachel, this is a GRAND topic! Yes, it’s true that Hugh Jackman loves me, can’t wait to marry me, and has plans of sweeping me off my feet as soon as whazzername, his w-i-f-e, is g-o-n-e, but he’s not the only one. I’m also certain the guy in the new BBC Robin Hood has eyes for me, too.
At least, I think so … every time I look at the tv, he’s looking back. That means something, right?
Right?

Karen Rose on 13 Mar 2007 at 8:22 pm #
Ok, Miz Mcgyver - you can have Jack (aka Richard Dean Anderson) if you promise to keep your mitts off Daniel. I love the episode when he and Samantha are nerds
As for the rest of the men listed here, I must really be out of the loop or watch very different TV and movies, because I’m not even sure who some of these men are. Sigh. Maybe we goddesses can have a TV night with wine and chocolate and you all can introduce me to all these men who have unrequited love for you.
Hugh Jackman I do know because I love X-Men - which also has Patrick Stewart, so I’m good both ways.
Suzanne Enoch on 13 Mar 2007 at 8:38 pm #
Hey, Karen Hawkins Jackman WhazzinameNewHotRobinHood — if you’ve stolen Hugh’s love for me it’s only because he came to the hotel room and you answered the door, and you’d been writing in the NUDE again!

Y’all are so cute.
Kelly Ann on 13 Mar 2007 at 9:17 pm #
The new Robin Hood is sooooooo hot! Have you seen him all dressed up? Oh good lord, the man is delicious. I’m afriad I like him all rugged the best though. Oh to be Maid Marrian! But…. I’m sorry girls, you must be mistaken about Orlando Bloom, we just had lunch again today where he begged and pleaded for my hand. I had to, “sigh” once again turn him down. The man just won’t take no for an answer. I keep telling him I’m married but he says that I will always be his!!!!! What’s a girl to do? (long suffering sigh)
Nicole Jordan on 13 Mar 2007 at 10:46 pm #
Ahem. Sorry, ladies, but I have dibs on Colin Firth. I might possibly concede the claim to CFFan, since her screenname obviously shows her devotion, but I will not let Julia have him without a fight.
Also adore Jeremy Northam and Pierce Brosnan (drool over those suave dark-haired guys with the Brit accents) And especially Richard Dean Anderson. He was the model for my Prince of Pleasure, and in my imagination, he definitely lived up to his title. *S*

Sigh. Suzanne Enoch, there you are once again with “Karen’s nude in the hotel room” thing. Really, we’re gonna have to have a talk. I’m only nude when I’m WRITING, ‘k? And you know I never, EVER work at a conference. Or much at home, either. In fact, lately, I’ve discovered I’m better at procrastinating than I ever thought. It’s gone from Raw Talent straight to Art Form.
Can you get a job procrastinating? While looking at Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth and NewHotRobinHoodFromTheBBC pictures???? Can you?

Matthew McConaugh is one sexy babe!! Please tell me you have seen him in “A Time to Kill”? Man, he is hot in that movie!! lol Orlando Bloom is another man I think is hot and sexy!! Give me Will Turner now!!! lol
Okay, so when all else fails, there is a guy that I like here in my hometown. I believe he has an unrequinted love for me, he just needs someone to hit him upside the head with a hammer to knock it into him! haha Anyone want to volunteer for the job?? lol

Richard Dean Anderson was your model for Prince of Pleasure! How did I not recognize him immediately?? Gotta re-read it, that is all there is to it. >>>I got my DVD of Casino Royale today and watched it to see why everyone says Daniel Craig is the best 007 ever. I’ll still take Brosnan. Craig’s ears stick out.
LOL, Donna! I think a lot of women liked Craig cause he was able to play a SNAG convincingly (sensative new-age guy), as opposed to just the usual macho Bond strut and swagger. I went in with great skepticism, but came out feeling drawn to Craig on more than just a physical level, which made the movie for me. And in fact, I’m using him for the model for my current hero.
And yes, MizMac, in the past I’ve used Richard (Jack from SG-1) any time I needed a blond hero (which isn’t often since I tend to like dark-haired guys). But I feel that I should offer a little variety in hair color to my readers. Plus, with this new book I figured I needed a change in models to spark some new creativity. I’m happy to say that it’s worked!
NicoleJ
dbrown3400 on 14 Mar 2007 at 9:15 pm #
You’re right, Nicole. I just never thought of Bond as super-sensitive. I watched again and get the ‘SNAG’ thing. Craig’s got a great bod and fantastic eyes, if they’re not contacts, but I still have trouble with the ears. Please don’t use that as a physical flaw on one of your heroes! I’ve got a great picture of each of your cast of characters so far — or did I forget a Dumbo somewhere?

Robin Hood on BBC is Jonas Armstrong. I smirk when I see Guy on Robin Hood played by Richard Armitage.
I would have to say Gerard Butler has my heart. I like Sean Bean too. If you can have a historical crush-Attila the Hun has my heart (I’m a history major).
Susan K on 15 Mar 2007 at 12:14 pm #
Nobody probably knows who this is but Brett Hull (former NHL player) has had my heart since I was 12. I saved myself for him for 18 years. I know that he wants me but he must not have been able to find me because he broke my heart and married someone last summer. So I picked up the pieces of my heart and I’ve moved on. But there will always be a piece of my heart that belongs to him. (Which my fiance knows if you can’t tell by the sarcastic way he says Brett’s name. And the nasty look on his face when he says it!)
dbrown3400 on 15 Mar 2007 at 2:19 pm #
Nicole, sorry about the ears. In a few sleepless hours last night it dawned on me that my first favorite actor was David Janssen. He had HUGE ears! That was in 1956 when he was Richard Diamond, Private Detective, not later as The Fugitive. And he was sensitive. ‘Nuff said.
Donna
Nicole Jordan on 15 Mar 2007 at 3:48 pm #
I understand completely about the ears, Donna, lol. Sometimes one feature turns you off, no matter how appealing others find a person, and you can’t get it out of your head.
I never could like Tom Selleck because of his mustache, which was very strange, considering that my dh had a mustache at the time, and I about kicked him out of the house when he shaved it off without discussing his intentions with me first. Took me two days before I would even kiss him again!

I have to admit I seem to be attracted to dark-haired men in real life, and I love all the dark haired heroes, but there is just something that appeals to me about Richard. Of course it could be that he loves me so much I can’t help but love him back………. now if he would just find me and take me away from all of this………..

HAHAHAHA!! This is a GREAT blog! The Karens are cracking me up! Ok… number one for me, (besides my husband… but we have an understanding… we have a list… does anyone else? “I can have… and you can have…”)
number one on my list, is Eddie Vedder. I turn to mush. Then, Brad Pitt…. then in no particular order… Ralph Fiennes, Matthew McYummypants, (best body ever!) Brendon Fraser (delicious in George of the Jungle)…
Hugh Jackman of course… Yes, Viggo as Aragorn, wow. And Orlando ONLY as the elf guy. OH! Duh! Johhny Depp! Captain Jack. Fabulous.
It’s fun to hear who you all use as your hero models! Nicole… I was thinking it was Brad Pitt in The Prince of Pleasure. Hmmm… I’ll have to read it again… though, I don’t know if I can get past Brad.
