How do you express your inner Goddess?

sinatranancy_boots1.jpgMy name is Rachel Gibson and I am a shoe-aholic. It started in the fourth grade with my first pair of white patent leather go-go boots. Once I felt them on my legs, and listened to the sound of the heels as I walked the playground at Longfellow Elementary School, I was hooked. In junior high, while other girls babysat and earned money for things like cars or college tuition, I bought shoes.

Always.

My husband doesn’t understand my obsession, but that’s okay. I don’t understand his obsession with fishing. It’s either cold or hot, depending on the time of year, and smelly. When my husband points to my closet overflowing with pumps and wedgies as reasons why I don’t need another pair of shoes, I open the freezer and point to the frozen schools of fish.

To me, shoes are works of art that make a statement about the person wearing them.  I like my statement to have a little flash. I think boring shoes are a tragedy of cataclysmic proportions. And yes, I know that Crocs are comfy and all that, but I just have to cover my mouth and shake my head.

boop.jpg My mother is also a huge shoe freak, but her true passion is collecting anything Betty Boop. She’s one of those ladies you see walking around in Betty Boop T-shirts, jackets, pants and carrying a Boop purse.  She has an entire room in her house devoted to Betty, which makes buying her gifts easy . . . or at least it used to.  She’s about to turn seventy, and a year ago I took a good look at the Boop room and it hit me like a slap up side the head that I was going to inherit all that Betty crap . . . ah stuff, one of these days.

I think everyone should have a passion, be it shoes, fishing or collecting memorabilia. Something that gets us all excited and brightens our day.

So what’s your passion? What makes a statement about your inner Goddess?

I hope you had some fishnets to go with those go-go boots!

I, too, remember fondly my first pair of white go-go boots. They were a Christmas present. I wore them to school with the coolest dress–and instantly ran into another girl who had on the EXACT. SAME. OUTFIT. down to the go-go boots. I am still reeling.

I have a thing for shoes, too. My husband thinks this is odd, because, like he says, “but you never go anywhere!” Okay, granted, and that’s definitely a topic for another blog–but when I DO go somewhere, the right footwear is crucial.

My passion has, in the last three years, turned to handbags. It started with a trip to Italy, and somehow amid all that hand-tooled leather, my inner purse Goddess was awakened. I am a newbie, just beginning to build The Collections. I don’t have Hermes like Nicole….but I am jonesing for one.

Oh yes, I had fishnet stockings in about every color, and a purple poncho that I absolutely loved.

I don’t go any place to wear my shoes either, but that’s not the point. Yesterday I showed my husband my latest pair of shoes and he got that look on his face. The one that tells me he hates them, but he knows better then to tell me so. He kinda has a rule that he hates all shoes that could cause serious damage to his “manly region” or poke out an eye.

I love shoes as well. Mainly flip-flops. But to tell the truth I’m only passionate about my books and my Disney junk (old books, snowglobes, collector DVDS, etc, etc.). If I had the spare cash you better believe I would have tons and tons of shoes, books, and Disney snowglobes!

  4. Karen Hawkins on 18 Feb 2007 at 6:14 pm #

Rachel, if you’d keep your heels on the floor they wouldn’t damage anyone’s ‘manly parts’ or ‘poke out an eye.’

    I’m just sayin’ . . . .

I looooove shoes! I have over 100 pairs, which means my (new) closet is too small. I have strappy high heels, low slung sling backs, cork wedges with braid, jeweled stillettos, thigh high boots . . . one of every size, every color and yet it’s NOT ENOUGH.

I especially love to find Shoes On Sale. I don’t know why, but if I can find some sexy shoes for HALF OFF, I’m IN HEAVEN. It’s like two prezzies in one!

What kind of shoes do you get, Rachel? Besides those devastating to ‘manly parts?’

  5. Claudia Dain on 18 Feb 2007 at 6:30 pm #

Shoes!! I could talk about shoes all day long. I just bought a pair yesterday, in fact, am wearing them today (test driving them) and am fighting the urge to go back and get them in black (I bought the brown pair). Why fight, you ask? Good question! These are good-looking, comfortable, stylish everyday shoes. Why shouldn’t I get them in every color I can find?

That’s my secret shoe “problem.” Not that I buy shoes. Heavens, no. But that when I find a pair I like, I buy them in mulitiples! I can’t tell you how many duplicate pairs I have in varied colors, but they do add up to my 100+ pairs of shoes.

And purses. I have a serious thing for purses.

And jewelry. Real jewelry. I could become a cat burgler just to keep the jewelry flowing.

It’s all about the Accessories, isn’t it?

  6. Claudia Dain on 18 Feb 2007 at 6:34 pm #

Oh, and I forgot to chime in and add that I remember my first pair of white go-go boots as well. Vividly. I loved those boots, even if they did make running around on the playground a challenge. Cool boots are worth any challenge!

Speaking of boots, I had a pair of blood red boots in high school that were super thick stretchy material and were worn like panty hose! They were high-heeled and hard-soled, but they just went up…and up…and up. Even my high school teachers thought they were cool. Very, very cool boots.

I don’t remember the first thing about high school algebra, but I’ll never forget those red boots.

  7. Rachel Gibson on 18 Feb 2007 at 6:37 pm #

Karen, you do have an evil mind . . . I’m just saying.

Yesterday I got some patent leather calf boots and a pair of patent leather Mary Janes with pointy toes and five inch spike heels. Last week it was a pair of Carlos Santana leopard print pumps with red platform heels. They’re so ho-ish, and I’m in heaven. Although . . . I must say they’re not as ho-ish as thigh-high boots. Being that I’m 5′2, I can’t wear thigh-high anything without looking like an Ompa Lompa.

I’m not hugely into jewelry, but I do own a lot of very nice watches. I don’t know if watches count though.

I am so jealous of you all. I have a bad back and can’t wear high heels. No stillettos, no wedgies, no silly sexy strappy things. Plus I’m like a double D - which is cool if it was a bra, but in a shoe it just sucks. So even if I were tempted to tempt Fate on my back, I can’t fit my feet in the pretty shoes. God, now I’m so depressed.

I have clogs. Black ones and brown ones. And simple flat ugly sandals. Black ones and brown ones. God I am so depressed… I’m about to go shopping for new shoes - as I am headed north to Minnesota tomorrow (talk about tempting Fate…). I need shoes that cover my whole foot. They will be utilitarian and black or brown. I need a hug.

I did have go-go boots once though. I was about seven and they were hand-me-downs from my cousin who was prettier and hipper than me. She was on the homecoming court of her high school. I was on the It’s Academic team. But that’s another blog. Anyway, she gave me her hand-me-down white go-go boots and it was Thanksgiving Day. I’d gone outside to show off my new boots, but everybody was inside because they were eating turkey. So I wnt to the playground and climbed the monkey bars and then … to my horror … the chickens came. We lived in an apt complex across from a farm and the chickens would often cross the road - this day to terrorize me. I tried to climb down from the monkey bars and the chickens pecked me - and my new/old go-go boots. I didn’t care if they pecked me, but hell - they were pecking my vinyl go-go boots and who knew when my cousin would outgrow another pair?! I sat up there on those monkey bars for what seemed like an hour. But was probably more like fifteen minutes - until my mom came out to call me to dinner. Dinner was postponed as she was laughing too hard that I was stranded by the chickens.

I loved those go-go boots. I still cringe at rogue chickens.

Sigh. I would have a shoe fetish . . . .if Christian Louboutin made shoes in 7 EE wide. I have wwwwwwwide platter-like feet and can only wear “sensible” shoes, which sucks.

For girly retail therapy, I like to buy makeup or perfume. I also collect vintage perfume ads as well as vintage movie posters.

I do collect Hermes stuff, especially their scarves and hangbags. I’ve been collecting since I was a freshman in college so its been a life-long obsession. In terms of bling, I collect Victorian watch chains and art deco jewelry. I am also fond of the vintage jewelers Paul Flato and Verdura.

LOL, Rachel! I remember those white go-go boots, and I loved mine, too. But I soon lost interest in fancy boots in favor of riding boots. See, I’m afraid I don’t share your passion for shoes, although I will admit I get soooo turned on by the smell of new leather in a shoe shop. But the leather smell is way better in a tack shop. It just gives me tingles.

As for my passion, I’m a horse nut, could you tell? It all started with the Walter Farley Black Stallion books. My dh tolerates my passion because he loves me, but he is not happy with the barn smell that my riding boots bring home, and he cannot stand the thought of stepping in the you-know-what that horses leave behind. I’ve done it so long, I never notice the smell anymore. And I truly think it’s more pleasant than fish.

Alas, I don’t share Julia’s passion for purses, either. That lovely Hermes handbag belonged to Seton, Julia. She posted the URL for it earlier. I just chimed in to say that I once had the privilege of riding in an Hermes saddle. Talk about jonesing. Now THAT leather was incredible. Wish they could bottle a perfume for it. It definitely would have aphrodisiac properties for me.

Hey, isn’t that a Greek word? Maybe we should blog sometime about aphrodisiacs. It would be cool to hear what our fellow goddesses here on Mount Olly have to say about that.

I love your new blog ladies!
(Thanks for putting the link at RBL Nicole!)

I think I just missed the go-go boots LOL
My inner-Goddess looooves shoes, I have enough to wear a different pair every day for a couple months, allll shapes & styles. but I’m becoming a total handbag freak, anything but pink or pastel in LV, Coach, Prada, Gucci… My hubby doesn’t get it, so I just point to the room in the basement full of his sporting equipment and say “to each their own” LOL

Designer jeans are also becoming hard to resist… *sigh*

  14. Aimee on 18 Feb 2007 at 7:54 pm #

I too have a few pairs of riding boots Nicole,
My hubby has the same amount of horses as I do so he can’t complain about them LOL He hunts, and I show reining. Between the 2 of us we have 6 of them, glad to hear your an equine enthusiast also!

I LOVE shoes!!! Who cares if you don’t go anywhere?! Men will never get that . I also adore purses. My mother-in-law, whom I adored, passed away last year and she was truly a shopaholic, especially when it came to shoes, purses and jewelry. We didn’t wear the same shoe size, but I have all of her purses and jewelry–I did give some to her friends and other family members, too. Share the wealth, so to speak. My husband said I never have to buy another purse as long as I live. Ha!! Foolish man, it just doesn’t work that !

I used to have a thing for shoes, until I ended up with arthritis in my left big toe. I’m too frickin frackin young for arthritis, but it’s either admit to it, or pretend it’s gout. *g* Anyway, flat shoes just don’t make my champagne bubble.

Luckily, arthritis can’t stop my quest for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings” and “X-Men” collectibles. Or for the perfect chocolate dessert. Mmmm, chocolate.

No no diamondlil, you don’t have to have a shoe fetish. I just want to know what excites you. I’m actually into a lot of different things (none as obsessively as shoes) like whipped body mousse from Sephora. It’s really thick lotion and smells yummy. I’m also into purses and lately belts. No, I’m not a shopoholic. I’m a well rounded hedonist.

And I totally get the horse thing. Growing up, I had a Palomino and I used to ride her all over the foothills. One time my friend and I were riding on a trial, and we turned a corner and almost trampled two people . . . ah . . . let’s just say her heels weren’t on the ground.

I am trying to resist the shoe thing, but there’s so many cute shoes out now. I just bought a pair of really cute black heels - and I haven’t worn a dress in some time now. I’m not working so can’t wear them there either. I think I’ve got at least one foot on that slippery slope. What can I say, they were on sale. Oh, well, at least that foot will look good in my new slingback kitten heel.

I didn’t have gogo boots but there’s a special spot in my heart for those navy blue platform heel Mary Janes from ninth grade! I also was the proud owner of wooden platform sandals that contained retractable roller skates in them.

Alas, I’m the only female on the planet Earth who doesn’t have a thing for shoes. I have two pairs of sneakers, and two pairs of the same boots, in two colors. Maybe I never could develop a thing for shoes because my feet are anywhere from 10 to 11. Makes it hard.

Anyway, my thing is books, lots and lots of books. . . my computer and all that I do with that, my Rubber Duckies, of which I got my first, Ernie’s Rubber Duckie some year in college, my bears (teddies and the like), my Star Wars and Star Trek figures, and Donald Duck. Oh, and Ernie stuff too, not just the duckies. :) Oh, and anything Darth Vader, basically (that’s non figure type). . . Oh, and I forgot space shuttle related too.

    Think that’s it. :)

My feet are too big and wide to have many shoes I wear thongs go barefoot have sloppy slippers and a practical pair of black shoes for work flat of course. My thing is books I have to buy books all the time doesn’t matter how many I have that I haven’t read yet I just keep buying books and I collect snow globes and elephant statues.

So, as Sabrina implied, I am not only a Shoe Addict, I encourage others to be Addicts as well. I’m shameless when it comes to shoes. Even women with wide feet or long feet or arthritic feet DESERVE pretty shoes.

Ladies, there is a shoe out there with your name on it…or size on the box, whichever the case may be. Being a Shoe (Purse, Jewelry) Addict is kind of like being a Zombie—you exist merely to “turn” the rest of the population.

    Forewarned is forearmed, ladies.

  22. Sabrina Jeffries on 18 Feb 2007 at 10:08 pm #

I’m coming late to this discussion, because shoes and I have an antagonistic relationship. As in, I can only find a few that are comfortable for my size 11D feet, so I thumb my nose at them. You goddesses with the 100+ shoes scare me. I have seven pair of shoes. Count them, seven. A pair of New Balance black walking shoes, a dressier pair of New Balance black walking shoes, a pair of gold sandals (for conference), a pair of cream pumps (for conference), a pair of black pumps (for conference–are you seeing a pattern here), a pair of purple pumps (to go with last year’s Rita dress at conference), and a pair of black and white sandals (because they look so good with my black and white outfit).

Oh, and until last year (when Claudia and Deb Marlowe and my friend Caren Helms prodded me into it), I had only four pair. Yes, I bought three pair of shoes last year, for the first time in, oh, years.

But if we were talking JEWELRY . . . that would be an entirely different subject. I do like my bling. I own three big jewelry boxes and a jewelry chest. So I AM a girl, I promise.

  23. Julia London on 18 Feb 2007 at 10:21 pm #

Nicole, you are right, that was Seton’s collection of Hermes bags I coooooooooovet.

Sabrina, I do remember your purple shoes. They were a perfect match to your dress!

As for bling, I don’t have near enough. I like earrings, but necklaces and bracelets and rings, I just don’t have enough of. I am a novice in desperate need of guidance in the bling department.

My husband cannot understand a woman’s love of footwear. He is baffled by my closet full of shoes, and gives me a look of disgust whenever I insist that I need another pair. Fortunately, our daughter understands and shares my love of shoes. She walks around the house, in her plastic high-heels, feeling as if she is on-top of the world. Recently, she told my husband how she loves shoes too, just like mama. He rolled his eyes and gave me a look that said, “Did you teach her this?” I gently explained that a love for shoes cannot be faked. It cannot be taught. It simply exists. And, I said with a lump in my throat, it is very special.

I love shoes, mary janes in particular. I don’t know why. It probably dates back to my childhood when my foot was not a daintly little girl foot, more of a square block, almost as wide as it was long. I was apparently dressed in boys shoes for a number of years. I have no recall of wearing them, it must have been my brain’s way of protecting me. I saw a picture of myself as a child some time back. There I sat on the couch, this little girl with pig tails, a purple plaid dress, and these hideous brown oxfords. I turned to my mother and said “Please tell me you didn’t take me anywhere wearing those” to which she replied “They were the only shoes we could find that would fit you and we could afford”. So, as a result, here I sit a 42 year old woman with a mary jane fetish.

Shoe person?? Me?? Nuh uh! Although I do have one daughter (of three) that would fit in with the shoe-aholics here Just Fine!

Me, I’m a collector: Books, rocks, books, CD’s, movies, Books, pendelfin rabbits, books, anime trading cards, books…oh, and books…
Did I mention that I collect books?? I did? Oops, sorry.
    LOL

Anyway, I’m a reader and a collector so that there says plenty; of course I’m going to collect books. I have between 1400 and 1500 little friends…*my* books; that doesn’t count my husband’s (he’s into power tools and home repair stuff mostly), or any of my four childrens’.
And I am always finding new favourite authors, whereby I find new books to collect. But I’m also a reader, and the books that I collect and keep I read and re-read, etc. and so on.

So leave me to my bare feet & sandals in the non-snow seasons and runners and winter boots when there is snow on the ground…but I gotta get books!

  28. BookstoreDeb on 19 Feb 2007 at 11:36 am #

I collect shoes, but not the wearing kind. I have glass, china, resin, wooden, you name it, I have it, even shoes made of chalk. It is a collection my mom started when she was a child and then passed on to me when I was growing up and I’ve added to it over the years.

As far as real shoes, I am hopeless. I am this extremely narrow, flat foot that is very hard to fit. I hate shoe shopping because I can try on 50 pairs and I will be very lucky to find one that even remotely fits. I have bought and bought shoes thinking well, it will be ok, just to get home, try wearing them and be in agony. They either rub in the wrong spot or slip on my heel which drives me nuts. So do I envy you girls with all the shoes, oh yeah. Just wear and enjoy them for me too.

I have another collection that drives my DH crazy, books, books and more books. I work in a bookstore, have traded and bought online, buy books, loan books with friends, you name it, there are books everywhere!!!! They are taking over the house and even though DH isn’t happy with it, I can only look at them and smile.

I love Movies. There was a time when I couldn’t walk by the bin at Wal-Mart without having to pick something out….! Then I had a baby and well, I never have time to watch a movie these days, let alone “browse” the racks at the store for something I might like!! Sigh, 17 more years till college..!!

  30. Jeanette on 19 Feb 2007 at 12:46 pm #

Let me tell you something really scary. I hate shoes. I have about 3 or 4 pairs of shoes and I only buy new ones if the old ones fall apart.
But lets talk about Romance Novels. Now that is an interesting topic.
My house is overflowing with Romance Novels. And when my husband points at my Novels (they have their own room) I point at his CD collection.
My advice: sell your shoes on Ebay and buy Romance Novels.

  31. Sandy M on 19 Feb 2007 at 3:35 pm #

I’m not a shoe person, but do admit to being a purseaholic. I love purses, and if I was rich (which I’m far from being), I’d be like the celebrities paying the price of a small used car for my purses. I just love the different looks and am now starting to make and design my own. I could care less about shoes; I’m a flipflop girl. BUt I do understand that obsession as my sister has over 100 pairs and I have been shopping with her to dozens of stores to find the perfect pair of green shoes (Yuk!) to match a certain new dress she has.
I also collect wallets and books. I have shelves of unread books just waiting for summertime at the pool.

  32. Janice on 19 Feb 2007 at 4:58 pm #

I love Nascar(Dale Jr.) When my grandson moved out to go to college I took over his room. The walls are covered with diecast cars all in their little plastic cases on their little shelves. I have so many I can’t get any more on the walls but they are stacked in piles on every surface availabe. My collection has spread to the den an competes with my romance books. My husband has no interest in Nascar,He fishes which is ok as long as he doesn’t bring anything home.

I love shoes ,espadrils , flip flops , boots , skechers , snickers all of the above , i’m the person that goes on vacation to Portugal and comes back with 7 new pairs of shoes not to include what i already took with me from here , and the funny thing is that my Husband is also is shoe fanatic our closet is just for shoes and the other available space if for my BOOKSSSSS , that is the other little addiction i have , LOL ,
oh! and i like jewlery too :o) .

  34. Karen Sparling on 20 Feb 2007 at 2:03 am #

I, too, saw the Nancy Sinatra cover with the white go-go boots (although I was a smidgen(sp?) older. But what I really liked about her was her song “Some Velvet Morning” done with Lee Hazelwood way back then (you can still download it on Napster).

But I also admit that I like shoes, as well, and well, my addiction to shoes has been put off indefinitely until my husband finds another job (his rotten SOB of a boss laid him off last Sept), so my shoe fetish is on hold. So is the ever-lasting search for the perfect handbag. As well as the perfect tube of watercolor for flesh tones, and the perfect and cheap 300 lb watercolor paper.

Sigh…addictions, can’t live with them, can live without them, but only if necessary.

I love books. I have closets and huge bins full of books. My friends say I take all of the fun out of buying books because I read them so fast…but then I go back and re-read them over and over and over until a new one comes out that captures my attention.

  36. Susan K on 21 Feb 2007 at 4:59 pm #

I don’t have an obsession with shoes. I am obsessed with books. Unfortunately I can only afford to buy my favorite authors (which I am seeing a few of them pop up on here)! So I spend a lot of time at the library.

My other obsession would be Columbus Blue Jackets NHL Hockey! GO CBJ!!!! I don’t know what it is but I love watching men skate around and slam each other into the boards.

  37. MizMacgyver on 03 Mar 2007 at 9:07 pm #

Okay, I am beginning to get the idea I may be one of the older goddesses here. You all had go-go boots at 7-8-9 years old. I had go-go boots and fishnets when I was 16. And I loved them! I love shoes and boots. I don’t have as many as I used to, I ceased to collect every color of the rainbow and every style on the market when I had to start wearing uniforms at work. Now, it is books, instead of trading in my books, I keep them, shelves, bags, heaven help me they are even stacked in corners of my bedroom and dining room. And like some others have said here, I have absolutely no problem with reading them again and again. When one of you fabulous authors comes out with a new book in a series, I go back through the whole series and then read the new one. I am hopeless, I make my sweet son crazy, I make my BF crazy, I made my daughter crazy (I don’t make her crazy at the present moment because she lives out of state now but she did have her turn). I am a speed reader (and yes, I do retain what I read) and so I make the ladies I work with crazy because they look to see everyday what book I have with me. I think they have started taking bets on how long before I change books. I have to say it becoming an expensive habit, much as I would love to have the hardbacks I have confined myself to paperbacks (which means I have to wait a little longer to read the new books) but I am nothing else if not dedicated to my habit. LOL

    Inner Goddess….Hmmm
My IG is 60 lbs thinner, has long red-no-extensions-naturally-curly hair, firm little 22 year old c cup tatas, no post partum stretch marks and is often seen at Starbucks drinking whole fat mochas WITH whip and laughing out loud at Gerard Butler’s quaint little Scottish jokes.
Okay then, My real Goddess LOVES books, shoes, sequins on her shirts, Ipod marathons and a great phone call from her college junior. IG keeps RG in great moods even through menopausal breakdowns and cold weather.
    PS I love your books!
